Grant, Derrick. "Becoming a primary school principal in Ireland : deputy-principalship as preparation." Thesis, University of Lincoln, 2013. http://eprints.lincoln.ac.uk/12703/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigated influences on primary school deputy-principals’ motivations to apply for principalship in the early twenty-first century in the Irish Republic. This required the exploration of both principals’ and deputy-principals’ roles in management and leadership to discover how better to prepare deputies to continue to the principalship. The research approach sat firmly within the qualitative paradigm, using semi-structured interviews with twelve primary deputy-principals exploring their construction of deputyship and principalship from their professional socialisation experiences. Findings revealed the complex relationship which exists between both roles and the extent to which the pervading school culture determines how much meaningful leadership opportunity is distributed beyond the principal. A major outcome of the study is a constructed knowledge of the nature and culture of Irish primary deputyship. Three new typologies of deputy-principalship provide a new perspective on the deputyship role, concluding that the gap in experiences and knowledge between deputyship and principalship is so great that energy should flow into the formation of formal, planned and structured preparation for a deputyship transition into principalship.

Abstract:
Twenty first century Lutheran secondary schools operate in a complex and demanding social, historical and theological environment. Leadership needs to be conceptualized in a manner which is appropriate for a fluid, dynamic learning community. Contemporary thinking about school leadership explores concepts such as teacher leadership, shared and distributed leadership. Successful school leadership is also perceived to impact positively on student educational outcomes. The leadership of the deputy principal in many school sectors has traditionally been structured on the basis of a bureaucratic, hierarchical model. Such models are increasingly perceived as unhelpful in the school context, yet in response, little has changed for deputy principals. The purpose of the current study was to consider the situation in Lutheran secondary schools. It explored the understandings about leadership embedded in the current role of the deputy principals. This was achieved by comparison of the participants’ perceptions with historical leadership narratives. The key finding of this research is that in Lutheran schools, the leadership role of the deputy is often not as fully developed as would be appropriate in the existing climate, where schools and principals are expected to provide ever expanding services and fulfil multiple purposes. In many schools, the leadership role of the deputy does not provide sufficient training for succession to the principalship. Deputy principals are seen to focus on activity which supports educational leadership, but leaves them on the fringe of it. Deputies are often not involved in major teaching and learning strategic planning, vision and change management. This hinders their preparation for a future role as principal, but also deprives the school of a potentially significant source of leadership activity. Deputy principals are seen to model the Christian ethos of the school through the way they interact with staff and students and their involvement in the devotional life of the school. However, in-depth involvement in ongoing dialogue about Lutheran identity and the church in the school is usually dependent on the interest and passion of the individual deputies, not inherently demanded by the role. There is also a limited understanding of servant leadership influencing the practice of deputy principals in the schools. In order to maximise the effectiveness of the leadership role of the deputy principals in Lutheran secondary schools, it would be timely to draw together key doctrinal statements, leadership theory and Luther’s reflections on vocation, into a cohesive and practical understanding of leadership. This could form the basis for further development of distributed leadership in Lutheran secondary schools and help to ensure that they continue to successfully meet the needs of their communities.

Abstract:
Thesis (Phd. (Psychology of education )) - Central University of Technology, Free State, 2013
This purpose of this study was to investigate the role of the deputy principals in managing conflict among secondary school teachers in the Lejweleputswa Education District, in the Free State Province. Two questionnaires, one for the deputy principals and one for teachers, were developed. The questionnaires were administered on six deputy principals and twelve teachers from six secondary schools in Monyakeng, Nyakallong and Kutloanong townships. The qualitative approach was mainly used for the collection and analysis of data. The study revealed that conflict was common in the surveyed township secondary schools. The study found thatthe causes of conflict for the township secondary school teachers included poor communication, shortage of resources and facilities, work overload, gossiping, high rates of absenteeism and poor performance of teachers. The study further revealed that the role of the deputy principals was crucial in the handling of conflict in schools. The conflict resolution strategies commonly applied by the deputy principals included negotiations, accommodating, collaborating and compromise. However, avoiding, arbitration and competing strategies were avoided by the deputy principals. The role of the deputy principals in resolving conflict was found to focus more on building relationships and collegiality among teachers in the township secondary schools. It was recommended that schools are provided with adequate resources and facilities, as well as adequate teachers; that counseling sessions to be introduced for teachers, and that training in stress and conflict management is also introduced for township secondary school teachers. A conflict resolution model appropriate for the township secondary schools was also developed.

Chalmers, Ronald F. "An evaluation of the deputy principals' leadership development program." Thesis, Edith Cowan University, Research Online, Perth, Western Australia, 1992. https://ro.ecu.edu.au/theses/1133.

Abstract:
The Deputy Principals' Leadership Development Program (DPLDP) was researched and developed by the Calgary Board of Education from 1983 to 1987. It was conducted for the first time in Western Australia when deputy principals from schools in the Narrogin Education District participated in the program during the period 1989-91. This study is an evaluation of the DPLDP. It was designed to determine whether there is justification for the continued use of the program as a means of enhancing the instructional leadership capacities of deputy principals in the Narrogin Education District. This research is located within the naturalistic paradigm. It can best be described as a qualitative case study based mainly upon ethnographic methods of data collection. The organisation and analysis of the data, however, was structured largely by utilising Stufflebeam's CIPP (context, input, process, product) framework of program evaluation and a typology of instructional leadership developed from a review of the literature. This typology presents instructional leadership as a process based on three components: vision, information and action. The data for this evaluation was collected during a twenty two month period between April 1989 and November 1990. A variety of data gathering techniques was used. In depth, semi-structured interviews and participant observations generated most of the data. Document analysis and unstructured, informal interactions provided supplementary material. Data validation formed an integral component of the research design. A thorough and wide-ranging validation process involving the participants was utilized to check the accuracy and relevance of the research findings. The major conclusions of the study, that emerged within the CIPP framework of program evaluation and the typology of instructional leadership, were: 1. Participation in the DPLDP leads deputy principals to examine their role in schools, and builds a commitment to their role as instructional leaders. 2. The DPLDP has the potential, more than other available programs examined, to meet the professional development needs of deputy principals in key areas associated with instructional leadership. 3. Collegial support is the single most important element of the DPLDP for the development of deputy principals as instructional leaders. 4. The DPLDP can be implemented successfully in the Narrogin Education without significant modifications. Based on these results, and other subsidiary findings of the study, it was concluded that, on balance, there is justification for the continuation of the DPLDP in the Narrogin Education District.

Bezzina, Christopher George. "The Maltese primary school principalship : perceptions, roles and responsibilities." Thesis, Brunel University, 1995. http://bura.brunel.ac.uk/handle/2438/5149.

Full text
Abstract:
The main aim of this research was to investigate the conditions that influence and shape the occupational perceptions of principals; systematically observe primary school principals in the islands of Malta, and to contrast these findings with the perceptions of a group of deputy principals. To achieve this aim three studies were conducted. The first study employed a self-administered questionnaire survey method employed with all principals in primary schools (i. e. state, church and private). 'Discussions with parents', 'discussions with staff' and 'desk work' have been highlighted as the major job functions taking up most of the principals' time. Half of the respondents rated 'desk work' as their majorjob function. The Maltese principal tended to perceive his/her role as falling within the chief executive model. The principal's duties related largely to the division and allocation of work, the co-ordination and control of organisational activities, communication with parents and staff, maintaining discipline and order, and maintaining the level of resources and plant upkeep. This survey, however, shows that principals wanted to take on functions within the leading professional model. In the second study, an observational study was conducted with the aim of checking out some of the perceptions principals held towards their role and to add another dimension to the overall picture by identifying what principals actually did in their daily life at work. The study explored the work patterns of eight primary school principals in the state sector. The observational study attested to the multi-varied nature of the principal's role. The principal's day was generally hectic in pace, varied in its composition, discontinuous and superficial in any pursuit of tasks, with the unexpected always as one of the few certainties of thejob. The principal's energy was observed as being devoted to keeping the school ticking over in the short run with hardly any time being devoted to discuss matters of direct relevance to the teaching-learning process, such as classroom practice, curriculum review and update. The dominant model was that of the transactional leader who is fixing things, managing and coping in order to maintain the smooth operation of the organisation. As highlighted in the questionnaire survey principals devoted their time to administration, pastoral care and communication with parents. Little to no time was stated as being devoted to high value tasks such as strategic planning and curriculum review. The portrayal of Maltese primary school principals is that they are not so much reflective or transformational leaders, rather they are chronically busy, reactive as against proactive, and caught up in, and tied down by the unceasing demands of others for their attention. The present research seems to have identified the transactional nature of leadership as the main medium of interaction that the primary school principals opted for. Bearing in mind the present period of changes and development of school management practices in Malta, it was felt appropriate to seek feedback from deputy principals whose own role was undergoing change. A small group of twenty newly-appointed deputy principals were approached to view how they perceived the role of the principal. At the same time it sought to identify their perceptions of their own role, and get an indication of how they viewed tomorrow's principalship. This, it was felt, would provide data as to how Maltese administrators in general viewed their role. Deputy principals presented similar feedback to that presented by principals. The major difference being in the way deputy principals perceived tomorrow's principalship – one which went beyond the transactional model of principal as administrator to the transformational model of principal as leading professional. However, nothing conclusive can be drawn out. There is a strong indication that principals and deputy principals desire this move but some responses express a certain degree of inconsistency which shows that the implications behind the transformational model are not well and truly understood by the participants of this survey. The implications of the findings for today's and tomorrow's principalship were discussed.

Abstract:
A new group of primary school deputy heads has emerged as the new rank, SPSM, has been created for deputy heads of primary schools in Hong Kong with effect from 1 September 2008. On becoming teacher leaders, these deputy heads are serving significant roles in primary schools. The literature reviews that there are few local studies in this area. This study has recognized the research need to understand the needs of novice deputy heads. 489 invitation letters were sent to all SPSMs in ordinary aided and government primary schools in Hong Kong in March 2011 and five SPSMs participated in this study. A qualitative approach was adopted, including focus group interviews, individual interviews, shadowing, and analyses of relevant documents. Results of the study indicate that underlying the needs that they have voiced out (such as the need for more time and ‘space’, collegial support, appropriate professional development and training) are two fundamental issues, namely, their readiness for leadership responsibilities and their capacity for the multiple roles of a deputy head. This study also indicates that their needs are varied and personal. Their needs are affected by their major roles and responsibilities, different situations in schools, the decision and attitude of their principals, relationship with fellow staff, personal background, experience, mindset, and values, and situations in the local context. Implications on the ways in which their needs could be met indicate that besides issues related to other parties and provisions from external sources, more fundamental is the transformation from within, that is, a switch of mindset from being a teacher, a manager, to a leader.

Abstract:
Although there has been progress in the area of Multivariate Statistical Process Control (MSPC), there are numerous limitations as well as unanswered questions with the current techniques. MSPC charts plotting Hotelling's T2 require the normality assumption for the joint distribution among the process variables, which is not feasible in many industrial settings, hence the motivation to investigate nonparametric techniques for multivariate data in quality control. In this research, the goal will be to create a systematic distribution-free approach by extending current developments and focusing on the dimensionality reduction using Principal Component Analysis. The proposed technique is different from current approaches given that it creates a nonparametric control chart using robust simplicial depth ranks of the first and last set of principal components to improve signal detection in multivariate quality control with no distributional assumptions. The proposed technique has the advantages of ease of use and robustness in MSPC for monitoring variability and correlation shifts. By making the approach simple to use in an industrial setting, the probability of adoption is enhanced. Improved MSPC can result in a cost savings and improved quality.

Smit, Shelley. "Job stress in management personnel in secondary schools : an educational-psychological investigation / Shelley Smit." Thesis, Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/8793.

Full text
Abstract:
The aims of this study were to determine: • The nature of job stress. • Factors causing job stress in management personnel. • The perceived severity or intensity of job stress in management personnel in secondary schools. • The frequency of occurrence of job stress in management personnel in secondary schools. In order to achieve these aims a literature study and empirical investigation were undertaken. The data was investigated and evaluated and certain conclusions were made. Appropriate primary and secondary sources were used in the literature study. A DIALOG search was conducted using the following key words: job stress, occupational stress, career stress, work stress, management and education. The nature of job stress and factors causing job stress in management personnel were discussed. Spielberger's Job Stress Survey (JSS) was used for the empirical investigation. This questionnaire was designed to determine the amount of stress associated with a particular event and the frequency of its occurrence. The population consisted of the management teams (principals, deputy principals and heads of department) of 180 randomly selected secondary schools throughout South Africa. The management teams of 102 secondary schools throughout South Africa constituted the sample. The data obtained in the empirical investigation was statistically analysed and interpreted. In conclusion the study was summarised, findings were reported and specific recommendations were made for implementation in practice and for further research.

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the Tibetan issue in its various aspects: geographic, economic, strategic and political. We examine the evolution of attitudes and differences of opinion according to their polarization ranging from conservatism to progressivism. We assess their influences in recent history and we project the likely developments in the near future.- This thesis aims at showing that Tibet remains an important matter at stake for China. Hence the Qinghai-Tibet rail link embodies the Chinese national policy as well as the Chinese solution vis-à-vis Tibet.- This thesis aims at demonstrating that the Dalai Lama is still regarded by Tibetans as the key to the resolution of Tibetan problems despite the many crises the spiritual leader has had to face.- Finally this thesis aims at pointing out that the Chinese society is evolving towards a more progressive attitude. On this issue Chinese intellectuals have acquired more influence than before and this influence could develop even further in the future. This work belongs to an inter-disciplinary field of study and covers most of the 20th century and present times. It focuses especially on the post 1980’s period when the Tibetan issue became more international

Abstract:
In the field of controlled release technology for new drugs, models that can predict its delivery during application are important for device design. The main objective of this work is to develop a predictive model able to describe the drug delivery from highly concentrated water-in-oil emulsions. These systems consist of deformed droplets dispersed in a continuous film. Their structure’s characteristics make them favourable for their use as releasing devices. A combination of different transfer mechanisms has been implemented in a mathematical model in order to simulate release experiments under different operating conditions (volume fraction, oil/surfactant ratio). A sensitivity analysis has been performed to point out the most relevant parameters affecting the drug’s release: drug partition and diffusion coefficients. Partition coefficient of the drug for different surfactant concentrations has been obtained through a predictive thermodynamic model UNIFAC, and the diffusion coefficient using Chang and Wilke equations in addition to the Stefan- Maxwell development. An original and simple technique has been used to determine indirectly the mean droplet size of the concentrated emulsions, through measurements of continuous phase’s thickness by analysis of incoherent polarized steady light transport through emulsion samples. In a general view, the diffusion model proposed for small drug diffusion in concentrated emulsions, which was first proposed for diluted emulsions, predicts successfully the evolution of mandelic acid concentrations during release experiments undertaken in perfect sink conditions

Abstract:
Contemporary Tibetan-medium fiction literature appeared on the Tibetan cultural scene (in the PCR) in the early 1980s. To date, about twenty novels and more than three thousand short stories have been published. This PhD dissertation begins with a panorama of the main traditional (i. E. , pre-1950) 'fiction' texts which paved the way to modern fiction writing. The second chapter is dedicated to a survey of the world of books, newspaper and translations in pre-1950 Tibet. The third chapter begins with a review of the intellectual and, more specifically, publishing and media circles in Tibet since 1950, followed by an introduction to the main fictional currents today : tale, realism, magical realism, historical fiction and heroic fantasy. Last, the fourth part scrutinises the functions of this fiction in today's Tibetan society : it shows that writers play an ambiguous role since they are often considered, and consider themselves, as messengers of modernity, reform and rejection of traditions, while at the same time conveying a message of resistance to Chinese domination and valorising through their works crucial elements of Tibetan identity. Their writings develop a certain idea of territorial consciousness, of language and ethnic awareness, of their perception of history and of religion. We hope to show that writers and fiction literature today take part to the construction of a Tibetan identity awareness today

Abstract:
Members of the school community should work collaboratively in the educating of students. Teachers and principals must understand that their traditional roles have changed and improved organizational teamwork will be fostered by all members of the learning community assuming decision making roles. Toward this end, the purpose of this correlational study was to explore the relationship between teachers' perceptions of the leadership behaviors of Duval County secondary school principals and their perceptions of the level of shared decision making practiced in their schools. This study provides insight into principal behaviors which nurture participation. Leadership behavior was operationalized by the responses to each of the five practices on the Leadership Practices Inventory [LPI] (Kouzes & Posner, (1997). These behaviors were (a) challenging the process, (b) inspiring a shared vision, (c) enabling others to act, (d) modeling the way, and (e) encouraging the heart. The level of shared decision making was measured by responses to the Shared Educational Decisions Survey-Revised (Ferrara, 1994) in the areas of (a) planning, (b) policy development, (c) curriculum and instruction, (d) student achievement, (e) pupil personnel services, (f) staff development, and (g) budget management. The population for the study was a sample selected from all secondary schools in the Duval County Public School System. Schools with principals who had served in their schools two or more years were selected for the study. The sample consisted of 646 participants from 26 schools. Pearson product-moment correlations were generated for each of seven questions. A total of 34 significant relationships between the leadership behaviors of the principal and the level of shared decision making were identified. The significant correlations ranged between .096 and .191. These weak correlations demonstrate that the principals' leadership practices only explained between one percent and four percent of the variance in the level of shared decision making. Therefore, there was very little relationship between the leadership behaviors of the principal and the level of shared decision making in schools. A possible explanation of the weak relationships discovered for each of the seven research questions may relate to the construct of the principals' leadership behaviors used in the study. From a more speculative perspective, individual leadership behaviors of school principals may have less influence on the decision making culture than the organizational structure and culture of the schools and school district. The findings of this study provide implications for the leadership of school principals as they implement shared decision making in their schools. Principal training programs must provide prospective principals with experiences which will nurture the skills necessary to promote dynamic learning communities. Furthermore, in order to encourage their involvement, teachers must also be trained in this area. Tomorrow's principals must develop collaborative, professional cultures characterized by shared governance. Educational leaders should continue to construct deeper understandings of these professional learning communities.

Abstract:
The upper part of a probability distribution (or right tail) control the extent and the frequency of occurrence of extreme events. Studying the tail behaviour of extreme rainfall events has become an important task in the estimation of these events. The main goal of this research is to characterize the regime of severe rainfall events, and to identify the morphological and climatic variables that influence the most these events. The study is based on data coming from 1206 rain gauges across Germany that recorded daily rainfall depth for the amazing period of 110 years, which allowed a fair assessment of the upper tail behaviour. The upper tail behaviour is evaluated through six estimated parameters used as tail indicators. The information provided by these descriptors were analysed by two multivariate techniques, namely the principal component analysis and the cluster analysis that ultimately returned a grouping of stations based on their upper tail behaviour.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The aim of this work was to develop a new parenteral in situ forming depot (ISFD) system for the controlled delivery of drugs. Chitosan (CS)-based systems that undergo sol / gel transition upon heating at physiological temperature were selected among the different categories of ISFDs due to their well-known biocompatibility and biodegradability. After an overall review of the recent progresses on standard CS-based ISFD systems, the synergistic mechanisms underlying the temperature-induced gelation of the CS / gelling agent systems were investigated through comprehensive rheological studies completed by 31P-NMR measurements. These investigations emphasized the key role of the polyol part of the gelling agent. The next step consisted in developing a new system combining CS and glucose-1-phosphate (G1-P). The physico-chemical characteristics and storage stability of this system were investigated. The results highlighted a sol / gel transition under physiological conditions and improved storage stability compared to the standard CS / glycerophosphate system. Local tolerability studies of the hydrogels in rats showed that the system was reasonably well tolerated. Finally, the last chapter, dedicated to the study of the in vitro release behavior of several model compounds, emphasized the ability of the polymeric CS / G1-P network to sustain the release of the incorporated substances

Abstract:
Time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) is a powerful technique for the analysis of organic surfaces and interfaces for many innovative technologies. However, despite recent developments, there are still many issues and challenges hindering the robust, validated use of ToF-SIMS for quantitative measurement. These include: the lack of metrology and fundamental understanding for the use of novel cluster primary ion beams such as C60n+ and Ar2000+; the need for validated and robust measurement protocols for difficult samples, such as those with significant micron scale surface topography; the lack of guidance on novel data analysis methods including multivariate analysis which have the potential to simplify many time-consuming and intensive analyses in industry; and the need to establish best practice to improve the accuracy of measurements. This thesis describes research undertaken to address the above challenges. Sample topography and field effects were evaluated experimentally using model conducting and insulating fibres and compared with computer simulations to provide recommendation to diagnose and reduce the effects. Two popular multivariate methods, principal component analysis (PCA) and multivariate curve resolution (MCR), were explored using mixed organic systems consisting of a simple polymer blend and complex hair fibres treated with a multi-component formulation to evaluate different multivariate and data preprocessing methods for the optimal identification, localisation and quantification of the chemical components. Finally, cluster ion beams C60n+ and Ar500-2500+ were evaluated on an inorganic surface and an organic delta layer reference material respectively to elucidate the fundamental metrology of cluster ion sputtering and pave the way for their use in organic depth profiling. These studies provide the essential metrological foundation to address frontier issues in surface and nanoanalysis and extend the measurement capabilities of ToF-SIMS.

Abstract:
In order to prepare for the prospective need for heritage 3D recording, the main objective of this research was to investigate a new depth measuring method that can reduce identified limitations of current point-to-point measuring approaches. The limitations were time-money consumption, intrusiveness, accuracy assumption and efficiency. In many disciplines other than heritage recording, optical moir?? interferometry techniques (OMIT) are well developed as a measuring method and are considered fast, non-intrusive, accurate, and efficient. Based on these considerations, this research hypothesized that OMIT, as a measuring method, is feasible with respect to time-consumption and accuracy in acquiring depth measurement for fine-grain surface relief for historic recording. To test this hypothesis, a feasibility investigation was carried in which OMIT was used for surface relief topographic recording. This goal was approached by performing a comparison study between the OMIT measuring method as the investigated method and the hand measuring method as the control method. For each method, the comparison required performing eight experimental samplings of relief recording for a pre-designed physical model surface. The data collected from the hand measuring samples were the depth measurements of predefined points on the model surface and the timeconsumption for both measuring and data preparing processes. The data collected from the OMIT measuring samples were moir?? dark fringes generated on the model surface and the time-consumption for both moir?? generating and data preparing processes. For measurement accuracy evaluation, the collected depth data were prepared in the form of topographic contour drawings. For the OMIT feasibility evaluation, a comparison was carried out to examine the resulting topographic contour drawings for depth measurement accuracy level and measuring process time-consumption. In conclusion, the OMIT method showed higher depth measurement accuracy levels and lower process time-consumption than the hand method. The OMIT method also demonstrated less intrusiveness and more efficiency. This superiority validates the feasibility of using fine-grain surface relief for heritage recording purposes. Finally, the observed advantages of the OMIT method were presented to establish potentials for future developments and investigations. The observed limitations of the method were also pointed out to establish trends for recommendations and further studies.

Abstract:
Performance measures have been used throughout the business sector as a means to assess productivity, allocate resources, and increase profitability. More recently, they have been utilized to answer increasing calls for accountability in public education. Legislation has been passed in both the United Kingdom and the United States that implements performance measures as a means to measure student achievement and assess school performance. This study, conducted both in the United States and the United Kingdom, examined the perceptions of 15 primary and 15 elementary school leaders with regard to the transnational issue of school performance measures. Q methodology was used to examine the opinions and perceptions of these leaders for the purpose of providing insight for stakeholders and identifying future areas of research. The data from the participants revealed patterns of opinion within the head teacher group, the principal group, and the participants as a whole. Common opinions included the balanced use of performance measures, the political nature of school performance measures, the appropriate use of standardized test scores, and the consideration of economic and social factors. This study also demonstrated the use of Q methodology in qualitative educational research by both obtaining and analyzing rich and insightful participant data.

Abstract:
There are been a significant increase in French translations of Israeli literature in recent decades. This phenomenon fits into the general framework of increased international literary exchange, but also due to political, commercial or cultural reasons. Our study identifies the works of prose fiction of Israeli literature translated into French between 2000 and 2012, and provides statistical data on the number of translations to Hebrew, on the most translated authors and on the publishers and translators involved in the import into France. It clarifies the role of the main actors involved in such export / import: Israeli and French governmental institutions, literary agents, editors and translators, and it analyses for each of them the importance of political, cultural and commercial issues.Lastly, our study attempts to understand how these works were accepted into France by the media and by the general public. Our conclusions are based on the one hand on a broad corpus of Israeli literary works and press articles and on the other hand on interviews or written responses of writers, literary agents, editors, translators, library directors and readers. They highlight not only a quantitative change in the acceptance of Israeli literature in France, but also a change in terms of choice of translation that reflect evolution of Israeli literature itself and the individual will of a few people much involved in such export / import. If the approach of the French media remains today, although to a lesser extent, politically oriented, the public of readers is primarily sensitive to its literary qualities

Mbedla, Hloniphile. "A qualitative inquiry into the role of the principal and deputy principal in decision making processes in three rural schools in KwaZulu-Natal." Thesis, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10413/5030.

Full text
Abstract:
Decision making is a key function of leadership. During Apartheid rule in South Africa, decision making in schools was determined at the national level. A principal’s role was to implement those decisions. Post 1994, decision making has been decentralised and more participation and involvement of teachers, heads of department, deputy principals, principals and parents is encouraged in schools. The purpose of this study was to find out more about the role that the principal and deputy principal of a school play in decision making in a school, particularly rural schools, in this, the democratic era in which we all now live. To achieve this aim, this research was conducted in the Umzimkulu district in KwaZulu-Natal in three schools, all in deep rural areas but selected for their accessibility to the school at which I work which is also situated in a remote rural area. From each school three participants were selected i.e. the principal, deputy principal and one Post Level one educator. This study was conducted within the interpretive paradigm and was qualitative in nature. Thus, to collect data, semi-structured interviews were the primary source. However, observations of one staff meeting per school were also conducted, and document analysis of minute books from previous staff meetings was undertaken to ensure an important level of trustworthiness of the data. No attempt has been made to generalise the findings as the participants were very few, but as under-resourced schools in remote areas constitute the majority of schools in this country, I believe that the study is warranted and that the findings have relevance for more schools than those in which the research was conducted. The theoretical framework for this study is that of distributed leadership which considers the expertise of all stakeholders i.e. teachers, heads of department, deputy principals, principals, parents and learners, within a school, irrespective of the formal position or role they hold. This theory is characterised as a form of collective leadership in which all the stakeholders work together and learn from one another. This ensures participation of all the stakeholders in decision making. The key findings of the study are that: a) there is variation in the degree to which principals and deputy principals share decision making; b) that educators are given greater opportunities to make autonomous decisions in extra mural activities and mundane aspects of school life, than they are around key policy areas; c) that hierarchical structures are still noticeable in all 3 schools in the study; and d) that the three most significant barriers to distributed leadership, v at least in the schools in this study, are: (i) the traditional belief that says the principal is ‘the boss’ of the school; (ii) the lack of trust by a principal in her/his staff to make and carry out decisions responsibly; and (iii) the sense of accountability a principal holds in terms of constructing her/himself as the only one who will be cross-questioned by the departmental officials if something goes wrong in the school.

The education reform in every country has concentrated on the promotion of school-based management since 1980s. The school plays an important role in the promotion of education reform and the junior high school deputy principals are significant in the movement. However, the studies of educational reform only focus on teachers and principals. Deputy principals are seldom mentioned in the literature. Moreover, there is little study about how administrative staff collects information and how their core belief influences behavior from the cognitive point of view. Hence, this thesis used qualitative case study as the research approach, through in-depth interview, think-aloud method and document analysis to collect data. The research cases involved four deputy principals recommended by scholars and experts, from different school and different years of experience. The research analyzed the background and schema which form their mental model of decision making in administration as well as the performance of their mental model when making decisions. It concretized the mental model of decision making in administration for every deputy principal and drew out the cognitive differences between senior deputy principals and the junior ones. Based on the results, the research proposes the conclusion as follows: 1. The deputy principal’s mental model of decision making in administration are formed by their life experience. 2. The formation and performance of the deputy principal’s mental model of decision making in administration are influenced and restricted by the organization culture. 3. The realization of the deputy principal’s core belief is based on the varied contents of the schema. 4. The core belief directs the performance of the mental model of decision making in administration 5. Junior deputy principals emphasizes communication and need advice from others while senior deputy principals analyze problems according to their experiences. Some suggestions for the education authority and future studies, according to the findings of this research are raised.

Abstract A saying goes within the education circle, “an excellent principal will be transferred to another school; an outstanding principal will stay; while a clever principal will retire!” If the saying indeed reflects the truth, the principals who have opted not to retire as early as they can might have suffered more loss than those who have left. Since 2012, school administrators have been facing a variety of new issues as the promotion of “12-Year Compulsory Education System”, (“the 12YCES” hereinafter) has been in full force. As a result, the 12YCES triggers a so-called “principals retirement boom”. Among these retired principals, quite a few are 50-60 years of age, being right at the peak of his career. The training of a competent principal might take at least 20 years, and those who choose to devote themselves as principals often demonstrate great visions and enthusiasm about their jobs. Considering these facts, therefore, the most significant impact of principal retirement boom is the waste of human resources. The research essay provides analyses of how the 12YCES has affected principals in making their retirement decisions through the life history of interviewee, retired principal Mr. Sun, who made such choice at the peak of his career. Furthermore, the essay also offers a prediction for those potential challenges a school leader might face in near future with relevant advice.According to relevant research and talk with the interviewee, Mr. Sun, during the first wave of Taiwan’s educational reformation starting in 1996, he had been highly motivated and inspired to put his education ideals into practice. However, the new wave of another educational reformation, the 12YCES, only prompted him to retire at the height of his career. His motivation for retiring was his concern for health, family life, life plan and hostilities of the whole educational sphere. The unpredictable and ever-changing 12YCES policy was exactly the last straw for Mr. Sun to file for retirement. Abstract:
Natural human motion is highly demanded and widely used in a variety of applications such as video games and virtual realities. However, acquisition of full-body motion remains challenging because the system must be capable of accurately capturing a wide variety of human actions and does not require a considerable amount of time and skill to assemble. For instance, commercial optical motion capture systems such as Vicon can capture human motion with high accuracy and resolution while they often require post-processing by experts, which is time-consuming and costly. Microsoft Kinect, despite its high popularity and wide applications, does not provide accurate reconstruction of complex movements when significant occlusions occur. This dissertation explores two different approaches that accurately reconstruct full-body human motion from noisy and ambiguous input data captured by commercial motion capture devices. The first approach automatically generates high-quality human motion from noisy data obtained from commercial optical motion capture systems, eliminating the need for post-processing. The second approach accurately captures a wide variety of human motion even under significant occlusions by using color/depth data captured by a single Kinect camera. The common theme that underlies two approaches is the use of prior knowledge embedded in pre-recorded motion capture database to reduce the reconstruction ambiguity caused by noisy and ambiguous input and constrain the solution to lie in the natural motion space. More specifically, the first approach constructs a series of spatial-temporal filter bases from pre-captured human motion data and employs them along with robust statistics techniques to filter noisy motion data corrupted by noise/outliers. The second approach formulates the problem in a Maximum a Posterior (MAP) framework and generates the most likely pose which explains the observations as well as consistent with the patterns embedded in the pre-recorded motion capture database. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approaches through extensive numerical evaluations on synthetic data and comparisons against results created by commercial motion capture systems. The first approach can effectively denoise a wide variety of noisy motion data, including walking, running, jumping and swimming while the second approach is shown to be capable of accurately reconstructing a wider range of motions compared with Microsoft Kinect.

Abstract:
Inversion and Depth Range of Dipole Electromagnetic Induction Measurements in Geophysics Fernando César Moura de Andrade Institute of Hydrogeology, Engineering Geology and Applied Geophysics Faculty of Science, Charles University Electromagnetic induction geophysical methods are, basically, composed by a transmitter which produces a magnetic field and a set of receivers which measure the primary magnetic field, from the transmitter, superimposed by secondary magnetic fields inducted in the subsurface. Equipment operating at, relatively, low frequencies and with short distances between the transmitter and the receivers are usually called conductivity meters and operate at low inductions numbers. The depth of investigation, in such kind of equipment, depends mainly on the transmitter-receiver distance, on the orientations of the magnetic dipoles and the height of the instrument from the ground, in order that a depth sounding can be done changing these parameters in a single measurement location. Making a series of these multi-configuration measurements, two-dimensional, or even three-dimensional surveys, can be performed and, subsequently, inverted in order to produce an image of the subsurface of the earth. Forward modelling and inversion of multi-configuration electromagnetic induction data can be made...

Abstract:
Dissertation
This study explores the role of the principal in the management of parent involvement in secondary schools in Northern Province. A literature study investigated existing theories and models of parent involvement; parent involvement in the South African context and the provision of education in South Africa in historical perspective. It also investigated the managerial role of the principal in parent involvement. A qualitative investigation in three secondary schools in Northern Province was done. Data were gathered by means of participant observation in-depth interviews with principals and focus-group interviews with teachers and three parents on the school governing bodies. Analysed data revealed the following findings: principals lack knowledge on parent involvement and schools lack policies and organisational structures dealing with parent involvement as well as home-school relations. As a result of these findings, there is a need to equip principals with ways in which they can involve parents in their schools.

Abstract:
The integration of knowledge and skills across subjects and terrains of practice is crucial for achieving applied competence as defined in the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) (Department of Education 2003:3).). Physical science underperformance has plagued out Further Education Training (FET) schools sector for some time and therefore this study which is directed at the possible causes of poor performance and to device strategies that could assist physical science teachers to teach more effectively addresses a crucial gap in the performance of the country’s education provision. Emanating from the above, this study focused on the impact of National Curriculum Statement principle in the teaching of physical science in Grades 10 to 12 around Sekhukhune district. The study looked at integration as a principle endorsed in the National Curriculum Statement and how this is implemented by teachers in the teaching of physical science in grades 10-12.A literature study on the impact of National Curriculum Statement principle in the teaching of physical science was undertaken. A qualitative approach was used to obtain data from Grades 10-12 teacher in FET around Sekhukhune district. Data were collected in the form of participant observation, semi-structured and focus group interviews. The results indicate that teaches had no clear idea of integrating the relevant concepts in the subjects they were teaching (physical science). It was also found that teachers did not receive adequate in-service training specifically targeting the principle of integration. The study recommends the professional development of physical science teachers. The study indicated that the continuum model of integration is suitable for the implementation of concepts integration. It is believed that if the continuum model of integration could be used and followed by teacher as a guiding principle in the integration process, the challenges experienced by teachers in this regard will be minimized.
