Abstract:
This book brings together studies produced during the implementation of the MIUR-PRIN 2005/2007 inter-university project on 'The individual in domestic and community legislation: new models for protection and management of environmental and genotoxic risks'. The managers of the working groups organised itinerant study days in Messina, Florence and Rome, also with a view to in-the-field verification of different experiences and realities. Within the framework of interdisciplinary liaison, the important contributions made by eminent scholars have enabled the in-depth study at legal and medical level of the most appropriate tools for guaranteeing preventive and restrictive mechanisms in relation to protection from the damage of potentially genotoxic environmental, occupational or individual factors. This is the most recent approach to the new code of the environment, utilising the principle of precaution which is intended to induce the jurist and the medical scientist to discern profiles of continuity and discontinuity in the promotion and protection of individual values.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on Terry Moe’s 1984 paper “The New Economics of Organization”, which offers an in-depth analysis of Congressional and presidential influence on the bureaucracy and suggests that these institutions, as well as their officeholders, have the incentive to influence bureaucratic policy. Moe urges scholars of public bureaucracy to emulate economists who study why firms exist in the marketplace. This chapter examines Moe’s main ideas on topics ranging from principal-agent theory to agency losses, the ability of political principals to effectively employ contract design to specify sanctions for bureaucratic agents, and how Congress and the Presidency go about trying to take advantage of bureaucratic manpower and expertise in order to meet their goals.

Swift, Ellen, Jo Stoner, and April Pudsey. A Social Archaeology of Roman and Late Antique Egypt. Oxford University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198867340.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
The first in-depth study of the society and culture of Roman and late antique Egypt that uses everyday artefacts as its principal source of evidence, this book transforms our understanding of many aspects of its society and culture. It represents a fundamental reference work for scholars, with much new and essential information on a wide range of artefacts, many of which are found not only in Egypt, but also in the wider Roman and late antique world. It also sets out a new interpretation of everyday life and aspects of social relations in Egypt in the period under study. By taking a social archaeology approach, it contributes substantial insights into everyday practices and their social meanings in the past. Artefacts from UCL’s Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology are the principal source of evidence. Most of these objects have not been the subject of any previous research. The book integrates the close study of artefact features with other sources of evidence, including papyri and visual material. There are two principal parts to the book, Part I: ‘Exploring the Social Functions of Dress Objects’, and Part II: ‘The Domestic Realm and Everyday Experience’. An important theme is the life course, and how both dress-related artefacts and ordinary functional objects construct age and gender-related status, and facilitate appropriate social relations and activities. There is also a particular focus on wider social experience in the domestic context. Other topics covered include economic and social changes across the period studied.

Abstract:
Decision making is central to all human behavior, including criminal conduct. Virtually every discussion about crime or law enforcement is guided by beliefs about how people make decisions in one way or another. This interdisciplinary handbook integrates insights about the role of human decision making as it relates to crime. It contains reviews of the main theories of offender decision making and also reviews of empirical evidence on topics as diverse as desistance, crime locations, co-offending, victimization, and criminal methods and tools. It further includes in-depth treatments of the principal research methods for studying offender decision making and a series of chapters on specific types of crime.

Furst, Eric M., and Todd M. Squires. Passive microrheology. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199655205.003.0003.

Full text
Abstract:
The underlying theory of passive microrheology is introduced as an in-depth examination of the Generalized Stokes-Einstein Relation (GSER) from the starting point of the Langevin equation. The chapter includes a careful treatment of the assumptions that must be made for the technique to work, and what happens when these assumptions are violated. Methods of interpreting passive microrheology experiments and the general limits of operation are highlighted. The Generalized Stokes-Einstein Relation (GSER) is the principal defining equation of passive microrheology. It is a physical relation between the thermal motion of probe particles and the material rheology. Specifically, it relates the observable displacement of the probe particles to the surrounding material’s rheological response.

Full text
Abstract:
The equivalence principle is an important thinking tool to bootstrap our thinking from the inertial coordinate systems of special relativity to the more complex coordinate systems that must be used in the presence of gravity (general relativity). The equivalence principle posits that at a given event gravity accelerates everything equally, so gravity is equivalent to an accelerating coordinate system. This conjecture is well supported by precise experiments, so we explore the consequences in depth: gravity curves the trajectory of light as it does other projectiles; the effects of gravity disappear in a freely falling laboratory; and gravitymakes time runmore slowly in the basement than in the attic—a gravitational form of time dilation. We show how this is observable via gravitational redshift. Subsequent chapters will build on this to show how the spacetime metric varies with location.

Full text
Abstract:
Stereokinetic phenomena are visual illusions of three-dimensional objects produced by various drawings stuck on a platform rotating on the frontal plane. They are of theoretical interest because the phenomena cannot be explained by a “rigidity assumption” like other structures from motion, but they can be explained by a Gestalt general principle that minimizes speed differences. Other unique factors included (a) they do not appear to rotate but describe a circular translation (a movement analogous to that of a hand drawing a circle with the thumb oriented to the left and all its points moving at the same speed); (b) they appear to be three-dimensional and solid; and (c) they appear of a well-defined length in depth. This chapter discusses stereokinetic phenomena, including the related principles regarding the rigidity assumption, speed minimum difference, minimum principle, rotating figures, three-dimensional illusions, rotating circles, rotating ellipses, and rotating bar.

Abstract:
This chapter turns from the making of The Dual State to its theoretical significance. Fraenkel’s principal argument had three parts. The first part comprised several counterintuitive propositions about the nature of the institutional design of the Nazi political order. Fraenkel argued that this structure consisted of two interacting states: a prerogative and a normative state. The second part of his argument revolved around the institutional effects of this bifurcated state. Fraenkel claimed that it facilitated not only violent domination but also allowed for an orderly transition to and consolidation of authoritarian rule. The third part of Fraenkel’s argument concerned the institutional origins of the dual state. I elaborate and critically evaluate each of these arguments in turn. Through an in-depth engagement with the strengths—and weaknesses—of The Dual State, I prepare the ground for the remainder of the analysis.

Wallach, Daniel L. The “Shifting Line” of Sports Betting Legalization. Edited by Michael A. McCann. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780190465957.013.17.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter examines the growing and transformative body of law governing sports betting, with a special emphasis on the Interstate Wire Act of 1961 and the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992, the two principal federal laws addressing sports betting. The provisions of PASPA, in particular, will serve as a launch point to a discussion of the true driver behind current efforts to legalize sports betting in the United States: the recent litigation pitting the State of New Jersey against the four major U.S. professional sports leagues and the National Collegiate Athletic Association. This chapter features an in-depth examination of the New Jersey case and explains how court rulings have opened a variety of pathways for states to legalize sports betting and, at a minimum, have compressed the time frame for federal action to repeal or amend PASPA.

Abstract:
This is not a book about praising Finnish school education. After a brief introduction to Finnish education and culture, the book delves into details about the new curricula changes, the workings of schools, and the thoughts and educational approaches of Finnish educators. Given the curricula changes effective as of August 2016, the book includes 14 school cases to exemplify the way schools are implementing policy changes and the way principals and teachers see the future of education and learning in Finland. The book also includes one in-depth analysis of curriculum changes for preservice teacher education and three more preservice teaching education programs at four universities in Finland. In this way, the book presents the views of changes in schools and universities not only from teachers and principals but also from professors, researchers, and lecturers. The book is unique because is based on ad hoc field research, comprising schools across all levels of education. The book shows in slow motion how the concepts of schools, teaching, and learning are fine-tuned in Finland. The title of the book, The Future of Schools and Teacher Education: How Far Ahead is Finland? summarizes the direction Finnish educators see teaching and learning toward the third decade of the twenty-first century.
