Full textPredicting the PDC bit performance during drilling operation is important for the cost effectiveness of the operation. The majority of PDC bits are assessed based on their performance that are relative to offset wells. Determination of mechanical specific energy (MSE) in real time and compare it with the known MSE for a sharp bit to assess the bit life has been utilized by several operators in the past. However, MSE still cannot be used to predict the bit performance in exploration wells and also it cannot assess the bit efficiency in the inner and outer cones. A more precise approach needs to be devised and applied to improve the prediction of bit life and the decision when to pull the bit out of the hole. Effective mechanical specific energy (EMSE) developed in this work is a new wear and performance predictive model that is to measure the cutting efficiency based on number of cutters, which contact the rock as a function of weight on bit (WOB), rotary speed (RPM), torque, and depth of cut (DOC). This model modifies the previous MSE model by incorporating such parameters and including detailed design of the bit, number of blades, cutter density, cutter size, and cutting angle. Using this approach together with the analysis of rock hardness, a level of understanding of how the drilling variables influence the bit performance in the inner and outer cone is improved, and a convenient comparison of the bit condition in the frame of the standard bit record is achieved. This work presents a new simple model to predict the PDC cutters wear using actual data from three sections drilled in three oil wells in Libya. It is found that the obtained results are in well agreement with the actual dull grading shown in the bit record.

Full textThe research goal of this thesis is to examine various aramid fabrics with regard to their stabbing behaviour and to find influencing factors to this. An attack can only be inhibited, but an injury cannot be completely prevented. The goal is always to absorb as much energy as possible, so that the penetration is thus reduced and the risk of injury decreases. The stab mechanism is a complex and variable process. The review showed the demand on research in this area, because the most solutions involve hard body armour parts in combination with fibrous materials. This material combinations show many disadvantages with regards to the high weight and the missing flexibility. Other researchers also recommend textile solutions, because they are flexible and in the field of ballistic panels they are already used. The investigations carried out within this thesis are done to contribute to the development of pure textile stab-resistant panels. Therefore the interdependencies between the physical properties of the material but also the mechanism during a stab attack have to be recognized, to developed higher protection levels. It was shown, that the multitude of factors causes the problem to define a level of protection. General investigations were done to analyse the test parameters, which are defined in the test standard but also this one, which are missing

In scientific research, data visualization is important for better understanding data. Modern experiments and simulations are expanding rapidly in scale, and there will come a day when rendering the entire 3D geometry becomes impossible resource-wise. Cinema was proposed as an image-Based solution to this problem, where the model was represented by an interpolated series of images. However, using flat images cannot fully express the 3D characteristics of a data. Therefore, in this work, we try to improve the depth portrayal of the images by protruding the pixels and applying shading. We show the results of a user study conducted with 60 participants on the effect of pixel protrusion, shading, and varying the number of images representing the object. Results show that this method would be useful for 3D scientific visualizations. The resulting object almost accurately resembles the 3D object.

Full textThe focus of digital cameras plays a fundamental role in both the quality of the acquired images and the perception of the imaged scene. This thesis studies the focus cue in conventional cameras with focus control, such as cellphone cameras, photography cameras, webcams and the like. A deep review of the theoretical concepts behind focus in conventional cameras reveals that, despite its usefulness, the widely known thin lens model has several limitations for solving different focus-related problems in computer vision. In order to overcome these limitations, the focus profile model is introduced as an alternative to classic concepts, such as the near and far limits of the depth-of-field. The new concepts introduced in this dissertation are exploited for solving diverse focus-related problems, such as efficient image capture, depth estimation, visual cue integration and image fusion. The results obtained through an exhaustive experimental validation demonstrate the applicability of the proposed models.

Full textFor many years the major cause of infant mortality in NSW has been the result of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Statistics show the area defined as 'Western Sydney' is no exception, and in 2002, a report prepared by the Epidemiology, Indicators, Evaluation and Research Unit (EIRE) in Western Sydney presented data indicating SIDS rates in the area were higher than the state average. In particular, two Local Government Areas (LGAs) had clusters of SIDS deaths. Previous Australian research identified a higher risk of SIDS and other causes of infant mortality in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander populations. The areas of Western Sydney where SIDS rates were higher than expected were home to Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and Pacific Island residents. The number of SIDS deaths in Aboriginal infants did not explain the higher than expected rate of SIDS in the areas under investigation. Studies undertaken in New Zealand and the Pacific Islands have identified higher than expected risk of SIDS in Maori and Pacific Island communities in those countries, although this has never been studied in Pacific Island residents living in Australia. The reasons for these communities exhibiting a higher than normal SIDS rate is not completely understood, but can be partially explained by behavioural practices which are known to impact adversely on the risk of SIDS. This study sought to investigate the level of knowledge concerning the prevention of sudden and unexpected death in infants (SUDI) in three key groups of infant caregivers: general practitioners, nurses and parents living or working in the area geographically defined by Sydney West Area Health Service (WSAHS). In addition, the study sought to identify any variation in knowledge of SIDS reduction strategies in the three groups under study, and to investigate factors influencing knowledge and practice in these participants. The study findings were then used as a basis on which to develop strategies and recommendations to enhance the delivery of safe sleeping messages through the health care system. Using a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods, this cross-sectional study highlights a number of issues around infant care practices and the major influences on new parents living in a multicultural community. Results of the study showed there is a large variation in knowledge around safe sleeping practices (including SIDS reduction strategies) in all the groups studied. Although educational campaigns are conducted regularly, many general practitioners and parents are confused about the key SIDS reduction messages and still place infants in sleeping positions considered unsafe. While nurses and midwives were aware of the SIDS reduction strategies, they still occasionally used infant sleeping positions considered unsafe. General practitioners born overseas in a country where English is not the first language were less likely to be familiar with safe sleeping messages, including SIDS reduction strategies. Families from a Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) background were less likely to have seen SIDS information in their own language than families who spoke English, and as a result were more likely to use traditional methods of infant care, including co-sleeping with siblings and parents and side or tummy sleeping. CALD parents were more likely to rely on herbal remedies and friends and family for assistance, than English speaking parents who accessed health professionals as the first point of call when infants were unwell. The study identified a relatively recent practice, which until reported in this study, has not been documented in the literature. The practice of draping infant prams with blankets originated from the Cancer Council of Australia guidelines which recommend covering a pram with a light muslin wrap to protect infants’ skin from the sun. It appears parents have misinterpreted this message and are covering infant prams with blankets to encourage sleep, even when sun exposure is not an issue. Research suggests that poor air quality around the head of an infant may affect an infant’s arousal response. While no research has been conducted on the air quality around an infants head when covered by a heavy blanket in a pram, it is possible based on research into air quality around infants, that that this practice may increase the risk of sudden and unexpected death in an infant. In conclusion, this study found that multiple changes to the SIDS reduction messages since the initial ‘Reduce the Risks’ Campaign have led to confusion about ways of preventing SIDS in GPs, nurses and parents in Western Sydney. The study makes seven recommendations aimed at improving knowledge of safe sleeping practices in these groups, and optimizing health outcomes for infants using a collaborative approach to service delivery and future initiatives.

Full textThis study explores the complex relations between metaphor, taboos, and X phemisms. More specifically, it focuses on the representation of the taboos of disease, death, and sex through metaphors in a corpus constituted of five American TV series, House, M.D., Grey’s Anatomy, Six Feet Under, How I Met your Mother et Sex and the City. It is divided into three chapters. The first two chapters aim to define the theoretical framework. The study starts with a definition of the concept of “taboo” and its social and historical origins. It leads us to a definition of X phemisms – which are favored to mention taboo topics – and the different word-formation processes that are used for their creation. The second chapter is devoted to the definition of the word-formation process that is central in this study: metaphor. The approach is mainly cognitivist and the aim of the chapter is to define the Conceptual Metaphor Theory. Finally, the last chapter consists in an analysis of the metaphors of the corpus. The aim is to study the influence of the source domains on the creation of metaphorical X phemisms and the different functions that those metaphors may fulfil. One of the main objectives is to explain why metaphors are favored to create metaphors related to taboo topics and to shed light on the particular status of metaphors in TV series

Full textIn this work, the influence of both the microstructure and the load-bearing capacity of nitrided layers, formed on top of AISI D2 and AISI H13 tool steels, on adhesion and wear resistance of PVD-TiN coatings was studied. The threshold nitriding potential curves for the above mentioned steels and the optimum conditions of the pre-treatments which increased the adhesion as well as the wear resistance of the PVD-TiN were determined experimentally. By using longer nitriding times (about 11 h) and lower nitrogen contents in the gas mixture (about N2-5%vol.), it was possible to minimize the pile-up degree of the TiN/H13 nitrided substrates and, consequently, the occurrence of coatings chipping. This flaw persists when the nitrided layer is thin, due to an abrupt transition of mechanical properties at the TiN coating / steel core interface. Shorter nitriding times (about 42 min.) and lower nitrogen contents (about N2-5%vol.), on the other hand, are sufficient to guarantee a better adhesion of TiN coatings on AISI D2 tool steel, as the core of such steel possesses relatively better load-bearing capacity than the AISI H13 tool steel. The presence of a black layer at the TiN/nitrided layer interface was observed in all coatings deposited over nitrided layers produced above the threshold nitriding potential curves. This layer affects adversely the wear resistance and the adhesion of the TiN coatings. When higher loads are applied on the coated surface, egg shell type flaws easily occur.

Full textThe estimation of Polycrystalline Diamond Compact (PDC) cutters wear has been an area of concern for the drilling industry for years now. The cutter's wear has been measured practically by pulling the bit out for evaluation at the surface. It is important to find the right time for tripping out as this helps to avoid the fishing job and reduces the operational cost significantly. The prediction of the drilling performance is based on the interaction of cutter and rock. Several authors focused on the cutter-rock interface but only a few researchers tried to model the wear of the PDC bit cutters. The aim of this research is to understand the relationships between the rate of penetration (ROP) and the drilling variables per each foot, and then determine the overall bit efficiency for the whole drilling operation. A new mathematical model is derived to predict the PDC bit performance by considering the factors that were already not taken into account. These factors include rock strength, bit design, and bit hydraulic. The model investigates the effect of these parameters to estimate the abrasive cutters wear on the inner and the outer bit cones by deriving modified equations to calculate the mechanical specific energy (MSE), torque, and depth of cut (DOC) as a function of effective blades (EB). The model is used to forecast the bit cutters wear conditions in four wells in the oil fields located in Libya, which were drilled with three different PDC's sizes. The model enables the results to be compared to the actual bit cutters wear measured for inner and outer cones. The results are found that are well in agreement with the actual field data obtained in bit records.

The objectives of this study were to examine the meaning of life and attitudes toward death for firefighters- in Kaohsiung County and City. A further investigation on their possible relationships between the demographic variables (age, working years, education level, marital status, religion) of firefighters, environmental variables (work-related injuries, work-related life-threatening events, colleagues’ work-related death, loss of family members experiences) and their views of meaning of life and attitudes toward death were performed. The research instruments were: 1. structured questionnaires surveys: “The Meaning of Life” questionnaires and “Death Attitude Profile-Revised, DAP-R”; 2. face-in-face interview in depth with 10 selected firefighters. The samples were using the firefighters from Kaohsiung County and City. 500 questionnaires were distributed and 443 effective questionnaires were received. SPSS 10.0 for Windows with the function of descriptive statistics, compare Means with T-test, one-way ANOVA ( Scheff´e test) and Canonical Correlations analysis were performed to analyse the collected data. The results were as follows: 1. In the aspect of meaning of life. a. Firefighters viewed life mainly on “Life control”. b. 51 to 60 years age group scored “Life control” subscale significantly higher than 31 to 40 years age group. c. With 21 to 30 working years firefighters scored “Life control”, “Sorrow and sufferings acceptance”, “Life purpose” and “Will to meaning” significantly higher than the 6 to 10 working years. d. Divorced and widow scored higher than the single in “Sorrow and sufferings acceptance” and “Life purpose” subscales. e. Buddhist scored significantly higher than the non-religion in “Life purpose” subscale. 2. In the aspect of attitudes toward death. a. Firefighters’ attitudes were mainly toward “death avoidance”. b. 41 to 50 years old firefighters scored significantly higher on “escape acceptance” and “death acceptance” than 20 to 40 years old. c. Firefighters who work for 21 to 30 years scored significantly higher in “approach acceptance”, “death avoidance” and “fear of death” than with 6 to 10 years. In subscale “death avoidance”, 11 to 20 working years scored significantly higher than the 6 to 10 years working years. 21 to 30 working years scored significantly higher in “escape acceptance” than less than 5 working years. d. Christian scored significantly higher in “approach acceptance” than Taoism and non-religion firefighters. The Buddhist scored significantly higher than non-religion firefighters. e. Without any experiences lost of family members scored significantly higher in “fear of death” and “death avoidance” than the one who had experienced the death of family members. 3. The views of meaning of life (life control, sorrow and sufferings acceptance, life purpose and will to meaning) were strongly associated with the attitudes towards death (approach acceptance, fear of death, escape acceptance, death avoidance). The suggestions to the authority and administrative department for future implications practice include: 1. emphasizing on the life-saving equipments, facilities and training; 2. participating the “Life Education “curriculum; 3. choose an own religion; 4. establishing the social life within the firefighters’ family members.
