Abstract:

Respiratory pumping in Aplysia is a well-characterized behaviour controlled by identified neurones, but its function is unknown. To gain insight into the function of this behaviour, respiratory pumping and oxygen consumption were examined under identical conditions, in Aplysia fasciata Poiret and in A. depilans Gmelin. A. fasciata is found in less turbulent environments than is A. depilans, suggesting that control of respiratory pumping may differ in the two species. Rates of respiratory pumping and oxygen consumption were poorly correlated. The basal rate of respiratory pumping was similar in both species and was not significantly dependent on animal mass, but the resting rate of oxygen consumption was higher in A. depilans than in A. fasciata and was an inverse function of animal mass in both species. Brief, moderate hypercapnia led to an increase in oxygen consumption in both Aplysia species. In A. fasciata, the increase was much greater. Increase in oxygen consumed was not accompanied by changes in the rate of respiratory pumping. Longer, more severe periods of hypercapnia led to decreases in oxygen consumption in both Aplysia species, and an increase in the rate of respiratory pumping. Decreased oxygen consumption was more gradual in A. fasciata. Severe hypoxia produced a decrease in the rate of oxygen consumed, and an increase in the rate of respiratory pumping.

Abstract:

Aplysia gonad lectin, isolated from the mollusc Aplysia depilans, was successfully conjugated to colloidal gold and used for ultrastructural detection of galacturonic acids in some pathogenic fungi. These sugar residues were found to occur in the fibrillar sheath surrounding hyphal cells of Ascocalyx abietina and in intravacuolar dense inclusions of this fungus spores. In hyphae and spores of Ophiostoma ulmi, galacturonic acids were detected mainly in the outermost wall layers. In contrast, these saccharides appeared associated with the innermost wall layers and especially the plasma membrane of Verticillium albo-atrum cells. Galacturonic acids were found to be absent in cells of Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. radicis-lycopersici and Candida albicans. These cytochemical data indicate therefore that a heterogeneity in wall composition exists between ascomycete fungi. The significance of the presence of galacturonic acids in the cell walls of certain fungi is still open to question.Key words: galacturonic acid, fungi, gold labeling, Aplysia depilans gonad lectin.

Abstract:

Les AVP sont le principal pourvoyeur d’ESPT (Kupchik et al., 2007), dont la prévalence fluctue de 6 à 45 % entre les études (Heron-Delaney et al., 2013). En l’absence de repérage clinique, l’ESPT peut se chroniciser (Kessler et al., 1995). Les outils actuels permettent son diagnostic (Jackson et al., 2011), mais pas de dépister précocement les sujets à risque de développer un ESPT post-AVP en aigu (8 semaines) comme en chronique (6 mois) ou en tardif (1 an). Nous présentons une étude longitudinale réalisée sur 274 patients répartis sur 6 centres de traumatologie ayant pour objectif principal de valider un outil infirmier de dépistage précoce d’ESPT après un AVP (DEPITAC). Dix questions ont été soumises à tout patient hospitalisé dans les 15 jours après un AVP, ainsi qu’une PDI et un MINI DSM-IV. La PCL-S (cut-off à 44) a permis le diagnostic à 8 semaines, 6 mois et 1 an. L’analyse statistique a été réalisée avec le logiciel SAS Institute 9.4. Le score total DEPITAC était significativement associé au diagnostic d’ESPT à 1 an (OR : 1,43 ; IC95 % : 1,14–1,79) avec un pouvoir discriminant de 0,64 (IC95 % : 0,56–0,72). DEPITAC était corrélé à l’échelle PDI (p < 0,0001) avec un faible coefficient de corrélation (r = 0,32) montrant une faible redondance. Seules 3 questions après analyses bivariées s’avèrent significatives : « présence d’autres blessés ou décédés lors de l’AVP », « présence d’une dissociation post-AVP » et « s’être vu mourir lors de l’AVP » avec un pouvoir discriminant de 0,65 (IC95 % : 0,57–0,73). Aucun effet centre n’a été mis en évidence (p = 0,90). Nos résultats semblent montrer qu’à l’aide de seulement 3 questions de dépistage, les équipes infirmières pourraient repérer les patients à risque de développer un ESPT aigu ou tardif, leur permettant ainsi d’alerter précocement les équipes psychiatriques de liaison ou de pschotraumatologie.

Boala Gaucher este cea mai frecventă maladie lizozomală, cu transmitere autosomal recesivă. Boala se datorează deficitului enzimei glucocerebrozidază, rezultând în acumularea de glucocerebrozide în toate organele. Diagnosticul se stabileşte prin măsurarea activităţii enzimei. Dintre formele clinice, tipul 2 este cel mai rar şi are prognosticul cel mai sumbru. Prezentăm cazul unui sugar depistat la vârsta de 5 luni cu simptome neurologice şi evoluţia lui ulterioară cu hepatosplenomegalie masivă, fiind diagnosticat cu tipul 2 de boală Gaucher.

Abstract:

The first occurrence of the alien gastropod Melibe fimbriata in the Taranto marine coastal area is reported. This mollusc was observed on muddy bottoms covered with dense algal beds mainly composed of Chaetomorpha linum, Gracilaria spp. and the invasive chlorophyta Caulerpa racemosa. Occasionally, M. fimbriata specimens were found in proximity to mussel farms. Most specimens of M. fimbriata were observed during diurnal foraging activity and associated with anaspideans species, like native Aplysia depilans and the lessepsian immigrant Bursatella leachii. Melibe fimbriata can be considered a definitively resident species in the opistobranch fauna of the Taranto seas.

Introducerea terapiei antiretrovirale a îmbunătăţit semnificativ prognosticul şi durata de viaţă a pacienţilor seropozitivi. În paralel s-a schimbat şi profilul afecţiunilor maligne asociate infecţiei HIV. Dintre acestea, limfoamele, având o incidenţa mai mare decât în populaţia generală, reprezintă o importantă cauză de morbiditate şi mortalitate în rândul acestor pacienţi. Prezentăm două cazuri de infecţie HIV asociată cu limfom. În prima situaţie, pacientul, nou depistat cu infecţie HIV şi având un status immunologic bun, a fost diagnosticat cu limfom non-Hodgkinian tip Burkitt, evoluţia fiind fulminantă către deces. În al doilea caz, pacientul cunoscut de peste două decenii cu infecţie HIV şi prezentând răspuns imunologico-virusologic discordant la terapia antiretrovirală, a fost diagnosticat cu limfom Hodgkin, cu o evoluţie favorabilă sub tratament chimioterapic. Ambii pacienţi au necesitat investigaţii exhaustive şi o susţinută colaborare interdisciplinară pe întreg parcursul demersurilor diagnostice şi terapeutice.

Abstract:

James Stirling and James Gowan's Preston housing scheme (1957-61) has been largely neglected by architectural historians. The Preston housing demonstrates that Victorianism had an earlier and far stronger role in Stirling's movement toward a skeptical engagement with modernism and a more reconciliatory approach to architectures of the past. This article casts new light on the scheme through a close examination of the buildings themselves, the architects' statements, and Stirling's photographs. The architects brought two new resources to the work on these buildings: an interest in the regional aspects of the "functional tradition" and a willingness to use elements of the then-depised Victorian city, especially the typology of its bylaw streets. Critical response centred on the scheme's alleged "nostalgia," but the architects anticipated this reaction by adopting a positive understanding of nostalgia that enabled them to reconsider the possibilities of a retrospective and place-specific architecture in postwar Britain.

Abstract:

We report the development of a cytochemical affinity technique for detection of galacturonic acids at the ultrastructural level. The highly purified gonad lectin from Aplysia depilans (AGL) was tagged with colloidal gold particles and used for labeling carbohydrates in resin-embedded sections of various plant and fungal tissues. Patterns of AGL binding sites were compared to those obtained with a D-galactose-specific lectin, Ricinus communis agglutinin I. Differences in labeling patterns were noted, indicating that the lectins exhibited differential carbohydrate binding. In addition, the considerable loss of labeling over isolated wheat coleoptile walls treated for removal of pectin, after incubation with the AGL-gold complex, strongly suggested an affinity of AGL for pectic substances. A series of cytochemical controls, including sugar inhibition tests, has proven the specificity of the technique and the high affinity of AGL towards galacturonic acids. The potential value of this new lectin for ultrastructural studies on cell wall pectic substances in plant biology and pathology is demonstrated.

Al inicio del siglo XXI, México sigue siendo un país de contraste. Por ejemplo, los resultadosdel Programe for International Students Assessment o PISA (evaluación trianual diseñadaentre 1997 y 1999 y aplicada a partir del 2000, en países de la OCDE más algunos otros)muestran que mientras en algunas zonas del país hay una educación pública con resultadosfavorables al aprendizaje de habilidades básicas, en otros sitios las condiciones no sonsatisfactorias, no obstante la larga historia educación pública obligatoria, laica y gratuita enMéxico, en especial después de la revolución de 1910. Si se hace un acercamiento a lasdiferencias regionales, los resultados de las pruebas PISA en el Distrito Federal son más altosque el promedio nacional, en comparación con las cifras muy por debajo de ese mismopromedio que se presentan en estados como Chiapas. Se trata de una entidad del sur del paíscon altos índices de pobreza, que se acentúan especialmente en el tercio de la poblaciónindígena, donde las estrategias de cobertura de educación básica se enfrentan con problemasde formación de profesores, equipamiento educativo, asistencia escolar, e incluso dedificultades en el manejo de lenguas indígenas. Un acercamiento a la estructura de laeducación pública en Chiapas (basado en datos de la Secretaría de Educación y del InstitutoNacional de Estadística y Geografía de México, además de información de mi experienciaantropológica en Chiapas) permitirá analizar algunos de los aspectos que influyen en los bajosresultados en del desarrollo de las “aptitudes básicas para el mañana” (en el lenguaje dePISA).

Sea hares of Aplysia genus are recognized as a source of a diverse range of metabolites. 5α,8α-Endoperoxides belong to a group of oxidized sterols commonly found in marine organisms and display several bioactivities, including antimicrobial, anti-tumor, and immunomodulatory properties. Herein we report the isolation of 5α,8α-epidioxycholest-6-en-3β-ol (EnP(5,8)) from Aplysia depilans Gmelin, based on bioguided fractionation and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analysis, as well as the first disclosure of its anti-inflammatory properties. EnP(5,8) revealed capacity to decrease cellular nitric oxide (NO) levels in RAW 264.7 macrophages treated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) by downregulation of the Nos2 (inducible nitric oxide synthase, iNOS) gene. Moreover, EnP(5,8) also inhibited the LPS-induced expression of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), interleukin 6 (IL-6), and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) at the mRNA and protein levels. Mild selective inhibition of COX-2 enzyme activity was also evidenced. Our findings provide evidence of EnP(5,8) as a potential lead drug molecule for the development of new anti-inflammatory agents.

Abstract:

Although Aplysia depilans is a widely known European species and the type species of the genus, the distinctions that separate it from other related congeners are not entirely clear. Aimed at improving this scenario, a detailed morphological description is performed herein, showing some unprecedented and useful features. Based on our anatomical examination, this study has found the opaline gland to be dark in colour, as well as a metapodium with an indistinctly delimited pedal sucker, a crop divided into two equal chambers of similar volume by a circular muscle, gizzard plates arranged in groups, and a peculiar penial sheath structure. All of these characters appear to be significantly different from the other species, based on a review of the anatomical literature and several examined samples of ongoing studies. Our central objective is to provide new data on the anatomy of the type species of Aplysiidae; and, based on topological evidence, to propose a new terminology and possible homologies to some important characters, such as parapodia lobation, cephalic tentacles, crop, penial sheath, gizzard plates and visceral ganglion in anaspideans, for future phylogenetic analysis. The subgenus Subaplysia Medina, Collins & Walsh, 2005 is regarded as a junior synonym of subgenus Aplysia Linnaeus, 1767.

Ultrastructural localization of abscisic acid in tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. cv. Vedettos) seedling roots is determined with the indirect protein A–gold approach. Polyclonal antibodies recognizing specifically the free (+)cis, trans form of abscisic acid are used as the first step in the immunolocalization procedure. Evidence is presented that its distribution varies within the different tissues of the tomato root. In the root cap cells, free abscisic acid accumulates mainly in the apoplast, in the cytoplasmic vesicles, and in the amyloplasts, around starch grains. In columella and meristematic cells, it accumulates mainly at the junction area with root cap cells, in the wall, and in the mucigel layer outside the root. Abscisic acid accumulation in the wall, the middle lamella, and the mucigel layer of the root cap cells may play a role in the root response to environmental stimuli. The cytochemical labeling of polygalacturonic acids, as recognized by the Aplysia depilans gonad lectin complexed to colloidal gold, follows closely the immunolocalization of abscisic acid. The secretory process of the root mucilage and the translocation of abscisic acid may be related. The significance of the apparent relationship between abscisic acid accumulation and the secretion of polygalacturonic acids is not yet understood. A role for apoplastic abscisic acid in a root-to-shoot communication system is discussed. Key words: abscisic acid, root physiology, immunolocalization, tomato.

Abstract:

Tetrodotoxin (TTX) is a potent alkaloid typically from tropical ecosystems, but in the last decade its presence has been more pronounced in the temperate waters of the Atlantic. In its last scientific opinion, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) stressed the need for data regarding TTX prevalence in European waters. To address EFSA’s concerns, benthic organisms such as mollusks, crustaceans, echinoderms and fish with different feeding habits were collected along the Portuguese continental coast, islands (São Miguel, Azores, and Madeira) and the northwestern Moroccan coast. A total of 165 samples were analyzed by ultra high performance liquid chromatography high resolution mass spectrometry (UHPLC-HRMS) and ultra high performance chromatography mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS). Geographical tendencies were detected as follows, by descending order: S. Miguel Island (Azores), Moroccan coast, Madeira Island and Portuguese continental coast. The toxin amounts detected were significant, above the Dutch limit value established in 2017, showing the importance and the need for continuity of these studies to gain more knowledge about the prevalence of these toxins, unraveling new vectors, in order to better assess human health risk. This work represents a general overview of new TTX bearers (7) most of them in gastropods (Patella depressa, Nucella lapillus, Onchidella celtica and Aplysia depilans), followed by echinoderms (Echinus esculentus and Ophidiaster ophidianus) and puffer fish Sphoeroides marmoratus.

Abstract:

O ácido tioglicólico é um ativo utilizado em cremes cosméticos capilares com a função de alisar, ondular e depilar. A Resolução RDC 7/2015 da Anvisa, classifica os produtos em grau de risco I e II. Os de grau I não requerem informações detalhadas quanto ao modo e restrição de uso e os de grau II necessitam indicações específicas e suas características exigem comprovação de segurança e/ou eficácia. A RDC 3/2012 aprova a lista de substâncias permitidas em cosméticos e estabelece os limites máximos permitidos. Os produtos contendo ácido tioglicólico são classificadoscomo risco II e seu teor é permitido na concentração máxima de 8,0% (p/p) para uso geral, 11,0% (p/p) profissional e 5% (p/p) em depilatórios. O setor de cosméticos registrou um crescente aumento no uso de alisantes, sendo o controle do ativo importante para garantir a segurança de seu uso. O objetivo deste estudo foi otimizar e validar o método para determinação do teor de ácido tioglicólico em alternativa ao publicado no Guia de Controle de Qualidade de Produtos Cosméticos – Anvisa. Os métodos foram comparados e foi feita a validação do método em estudo. O método foi validado utilizando amostra fortificada em três concentrações (4,0%, 7,0% e 10,0%). Para a avaliação dos resultados foram empregadas as ferramentas estatísticas utilizando os testes t-Student e F para a comparação e a validação do método em estudo. Os resultados obtidos dmostraram que o método validado é adequado para determinação do teorde ácido tioglicólico.

Abstract:

El objetivo fue determinar la cantidad de la mosca del establo en el rastrojo de piña en derriba en seco. El estudio se realizó en la Finca Babilonia-Siquirres, Costa Rica de agosto a diciembre del año 2012, en una hectárea de rastrojo depiña. El tamaño de la muestra se obtuvo por medio de la Ley de Taylor. Para la captura de adultos, se colocaron cuatro trampas blancas con pegamento al borde de las parcelas de 50x40 m. Para el conteo de larvas se ocuparon las mismas cinco parcelas, se lanzó seis veces al azar un marco de 0,0625 m2, se tomó la planta de piña y el suelo a 20 cm de profundidad. En el tallo de piña en descomposición y en trampas blancas se encontró una alta población de mosca del establo, doméstica y Euxesta sp. La mosca del establo exhibió un patrón de distribución agregada en el cultivo. Se determinó, que el tamaño de muestra representativa por hectárea para larvas, fue de seis puntos de muestreo y para adultos una trampa. La fluctuación poblacional de la mosca del establo a través del tiempo en rastrojo de piña fue en aumento, después de la quema con fuego la población bajo en un 50 % y al incorporar el rastrojo al suelo, la población disminuyó en un 80 %. Se pudo comprobar que hay salida de mosca después de incorporado al suelo el rastrojo.

Background: Preterm delivery is a major cause of neonatal mortality and morbidity. Various modalities have been used to prediction of patient at risk of preterm labor. But due to multi-factorial etiology these predictors are not always useful. Tocolysis has a major role in arresting preterm labor. The purpose of this study was to compare the safety and efficacy of oral nifedipine with transdermal nitroglycerine in the inhibition of preterm labour.Methods: This single blinded randomized control trial was conducted in the labour room of department of Obstetrics and Gynecology from January 2011 to June 2012. One hundred women with singleton pregnancy between 28 weeks to 34 weeks preterm labour and no contraindication for tocolysis were enrolled in the study. After taking the informed consent subjects were randomized into two groups. Randomization was done by random number table. Fifty-one subjects in nifedipine group received oral nifedipine (Tab Depin 10mg). Forty-nine subjects receiving transdermal nitroglycerine patch (Nitroderm Patch 10) were included in NTG group. The variables analysed were delay in delivery for 48 hours, 7 days or more than 7 days, period of gestation at delivery and side effect profile of drugs.Results: The percentage of women delivering after 48hours of administration of nifedipine group (52.9%) and nitroglycerine group (53.1%). Failure of tocolysis, defined as delivery within 48 hours, with nitroglycerine group (32.7 %) was comparable to nifedipine (33.3 %). Headache was significantly higher in nitroglycerine group as compared to nifedipine group (p≤0.001). Maternal tachycardia was more common in nifedipine group compared to NTG group (p=0.001).Conclusions: Oral nifedipine and transdermal nitroglycerine have similar efficacy as tocolytic agent in patients with preterm labour.
