Fritz, Anna Sabine. "Depersonalization in structured groups." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1987. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/26815.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examined a topic from the field of intergroup relations, namely the consequences of the process of depersonalization. According to Turner, depersonalization is that process whereby people come to perceive themselves and others more as interchangeable exemplars of a social category than as unique personalities defined by their differences from others. Based on research involving simple or unstructured groups, he formulated the consequences of depersonalization in his Assimilation-Contrast Model as the enhancement of intragroup similarities (assimilation) and intergroup differences (contrast) with a pro-ingroup bias. The generality of the Assimilation-Contrast Model has recently been challenged by Smith's Person-Situation Model of depersonalization, on the grounds that the assimilation-contrast effect may not be observed in complex or structured groups. The present work derived and tested the validity of three sets of predictions on the behavior of structured and unstructured groups under depersonalized conditions based on the Assimilation-Contrast and Person-Situation Models. To this end, structured and unstructured groups were studied under two levels of depersonalization, one level of non-explicit outgroup comparison and a second level of explicit outgroup comparison. This resulted in four experimental conditions. A fifth condition of non-categorized individuals functioned as a control group. Fifty-eight college aged males participated in the experiment which consisted of a game-like procedure (brainstorming task). Subjects participated in a group (experimental conditions) or alone (control condition). The assimilation-contrast effect was assessed in three ways. Subjects were asked about their overall impressions regarding the group and the individual ingroup members ('global questionnaire items'), they were asked to rate other ingroup members on a number of personal attributes ('personal attribute ratings'), and thirdly, they were asked to rate the products of the ingroup as well as those of the outgroup ('product ratings'). There were four major Findings: (a) in unstructured groups, ingroup assimilation was more pronounced under higher levels of depersonalization than under lower levels. This was in line with previous research findings involving the Assimilation-Contrast Model (b) In structured groups, ingroup assimilation was less under higher levels of depersonalization than it was under lower levels. This was predicted by the Person-Situation Model (c) Structured groups expressed more assimilation-contrast behavior than unstructured groups. This finding was not predicted by either model, (d) In structured as well as unstructured groups, more outgroup contrast was observed under high levels of depersonalization than under low levels. This was in line with the predictions of the Assimilation-Contrast Model. The findings showed that all three sets of predictions were found to be useful in describing a certain component of the behavior of the groups under study. It was concluded that the assimilation-contrast effect may constitute less monolithic a phenomenon than originally suggested by Turner.

Abstract:
Background: Based on the assumptions that depersonalization symptoms are relevant for test anxiety maintenance, we examined their frequency, psychological predictors, association with anxiety symptoms, and association with test performance. Sampling and Methods: In Study 1, 203 students rated their test anxiety severity and depersonalization in their last oral examination. In Study 2, we assessed test anxiety 1 week before an oral examination, depersonalization, safety behaviors, self-focused attention, and negative appraisals of depersonalization directly after the examination, and post-event processing 1 week later among 67 students. Results: In Study 1, 47.3% reported at least one moderate depersonalization symptom. In Study 2, test anxiety and negative appraisals of depersonalization significantly predicted depersonalization. Depersonalization was linked to a higher intensity of safety behaviors and post-event processing but not to self-focused attention. It was not related to performance. Conclusion: Results are limited by the non-random sampling and the small sample size of Study 2. However, by showing that depersonalization contributes to the processes the maintenance of test anxiety, the findings confirm that depersonalization – normally understood as an adaptive mechanism to cope with stressful events – can become maladaptive.

Zhang, Yachen. "Social Identity and Depersonalization in Dark Tourist Experience." Thesis, Griffith University, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/10072/404459.

Full text
Abstract:
Social identity is part of an individual’s self-concept. A sense of social identity helps meet the demand of people for seeking social identification, alleviate ontological insecurity amongst general public and bring about positive attitudinal and behavioural changes in favour of the corresponding social group. Dark tourism, defined as activities of traveling to places associated with death and tragedy, is a burgeoning and fertile ground to ponder social identities. However, a comprehensive and systemic analysis of how social identities permeate tourist experience is missing. Moreover, empirical research with appropriate theoretical foundations to identify factors contributing to salient social identities is yet to be explored. Drawing upon Multifaceted model of the visitor experience and Self-categorization theory, the current research adopts a socio-psychological approach and aims to address those gaps. This thesis employs three studies reported in three chapters to address three main research questions. In Study 1, the thesis addresses the first research question, i.e., Does social identity exist in the tourist experience at post natural disaster sites? and examines the existence of different social identities in post natural disaster dark tourism context. Study 2 of this thesis approaches the second research question, i.e., How are social identities manifested in the tourist experience at post natural disaster sites? and unpacks visitors’ multi-layered experiences at post natural disaster sites, thereby laying a foundation for exploring the manifestation of social identities. Study 3 expands our understanding of what factors underpin the salience of social identities, answering the third research question, i.e., What triggers the salience of social identities at post natural disaster sites? Data were obtained from four post-disaster sites and semi-structured interviews were conducted in situ, with approximately 200 visitors (n=42 participants in the Beichuan Earthquake Ruins of Sichuan Province, China, n=69 participants in the Quake City (museum) of Christchurch, New Zealand, n=44 participants in Pompeii Excavations of Naples, Italy and n=41 participants in Tangshan Earthquake Memorial Park of Tangshan, China). Thematic and network analysis were performed using NVivo 12 and Gephi 0.9.2 software to depict the category, interaction and direction of themes. This thesis has four major contributions. First, this research verified the existence of social identity and a full spectrum of salient social identity in post natural disaster dark tourism context, moving from a personal, to an intermediate and a superordinate level of social identity. Second, this research outlined social identities, including human identity, national identity and family identity, interweaving with cognitive, emotional, introspective, sensory and relational experience aspects. Third, this research identified various triggers of multilevel social identity, with cognition of identity attributes and external stimuli as fundamental triggers shared by all three social identities. Finally, a framework, synthesizing all above findings, has been proposed for understanding salient multi-levelled social identities in the post natural disaster dark tourism context. This thesis therefore offers an empirical, timely and pragmatic guideline that can be applied by academics and/or practitioners to further deepen our understanding of social identity phenomenon and enhance the meaning-making work at post natural disaster dark tourism settings.

Duffy, Colleen. "Prevalence of Undiagnosed Dissociative Disorders in an Inpatient Setting." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2000. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc2578/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examined the prevalence of undiagnosed dissociative disorders in a sample of 201 adult patients admitted to a private psychiatric hospital in a major metropolitan city in the south-central United States, over an eight-month period. A screening measure, two blind structured interviews, and a blind clinical interview were employed. The lifetime prevalence of dissociate disorders among the interviewed subjects was 40.8%. More specifically, 7.5% were diagnosed with dissociative identity disorder, 15.4% with dissociative disorder not otherwise specified, 13.4% with dissociative amnesia, and 4.5% with depersonalization disorder. Dissociative fugue was not found in this sample. Cohen's kappa reliability coefficients were computed between the three interview measures, resulting in significant findings for the presence of dissociative identity disorder and dissociative disorder not otherwise specified versus no dissociative disorder. The Cohen's kappa reliability coefficients were as follows: DDIS-DES-T = 0.81; SCID-D-DES-T = 0.76; Clinician-DES-T = 0.74, DDIS-SCID-D = 0.74; DDIS-Clinician = 0.71, and SCID-D-Clinician = 0.56. A meeting was conducted at the end of all subject interviews to discuss discrepant findings between measures. Four additional sub-analyses were performed between dissociative and non-dissociative subjects on DSM-IV variables. Patients diagnosed with a dissociative disorder had higher rates of comorbid major depressive disorder, borderline personality disorder, somatization disorder, and childhood history of physical and/or sexual abuse. Theoretical and methodological issues were discussed as they relate to these findings.

Paul, Semasaka Sengoma Jean. "Predictors of burnout amongst nurses in paediatric and maternity wards of district hospitals of Kigali City, Rwanda." University of the Western Cape, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/11394/4626.

Abstract:
Magister Public Health - MPH
Burnout is a condition of emotional exhaustion (EE), depersonalization (DP), and a reduced sense of personal accomplishment (PA) that can occur among individuals who work with people in some capacity. Burnout is more prevalent in the helping professions, and high levels of burnout have been documented in all categories of nurses. A descriptive and analytical quantitative cross-sectional study was conducted to measure the level of burnout and its possible associated factors among nurses of two district hospitals in Kigali City. All 126 nurses working in the maternity and paediatric sections of Muhima and Kibagabaga District Hospitals were included in the study. A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect socio-demographic and workplace information as well as responses to 22 questions in the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), which assesses burnout along its three dimensions of emotional exhaustion, depersonalisation and reduced personal accomplishment. Descriptive statistics such as percentage, mean score, and standard deviation were computed for each burnout category and Chi-square test statistic was performed to test the relationship between burnout (dependent variable) and personal factors, workplace demands, and access to resources (independent variables); and between burnout and hospital and service (paediatric or maternity). Of the 126 questionnaires distributed, 102 (81%) were returned and useable for analysis. The average age of respondents was 29.7 years and female nurses represented the majority (88.2%) of our sample. Just over half (52.9%) were married and 53.9% had at least on child. The average years of experience as a nurse was 5.6 years, while the average years of experience in the hospital was 4 years. High burnout was found with high levels of EE in 43.1% of respondents, high levels of DP in 48.0%, and low level of PA in 34.3%. Burnout was associated with being young and inexperienced, having less training, having at least one child, working longer hours, experiencing workloads as demanding, poor perceived control of the work, perceived staff shortages and workplace conflicts. However, good communication, job satisfaction and trust in colleagues and in hospital management, appeared to be protective for all three dimensions of burnout. In conclusion, burnout was found to be associated with personal, workplace demands and environmental factors. Improvement of nursing work conditions, conflict prevention and improved communication between hospital managers and staff would be expected to prevent burnout among nurses working in paediatric and maternity wards of Muhima and Kibagabaga District Hospitals.

Lamanna, John. "The Effects of Attachment Relationships on the Development of Effects of Empathy or Depersonalization in Adolescence." TopSCHOLAR®, 2007. http://digitalcommons.wku.edu/theses/26.

Full text
Abstract:
Research on attachment theory supports the notion that our early attachment relationships are integral to empathic development, and that early negative attachment relationships can promote depersonalization rather than empathy. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effects of separations from one’s primary caregiver(s) on the development of empathy or depersonalization in adolescence. Adolescents who have been separated from their biological parent(s) due to abuse and/or neglect were expected to differ on self-reported levels of empathy, dissociation, hostility, and depression when compared to adolescents who have not had such involuntary separations in their life. After performing descriptive, correlational, and inferential analyses, results indicated that there was not a significant difference between the groups on self-reported levels of empathy, dissociation, hostility, or depressive symptomatology. It is important to note, though, that more than half of the youth who were involuntarily separated from their biological parent(s) continued to view at least one of their parents as a positive attachment figure, and there was not a significant difference between groups on the number of positive attachments reported. The findings in this study were interpreted as supportive of the applications of attachment theory to past empathy research, since differences on the dependent variables were not expected if there were not differences in attachment between the two groups. The results also supported the seminal work of John Bowlby by affirming the role of perception and the cognitive appraisal of attachment figures on attachment security. Furthermore, the results validated the use of the Social Networks Questionnaire (SNQ) and supported its use, in conjunction with the Social Support Questionnaire-Short Form (SSQ6), to assess attachment relationships.

Abstract:
Background: Burnout and physician wellness are becoming increasingly topical. While some surveys have been performed with South African anaesthesiologists, these have been conducted in limited samples. While Burnout is often measured, there is a paucity of research on contributory risk and protective factors. Method: A contextual, prospective, cross-sectional study was conducted. The Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey (MBI-HSS) and the Areas of Work-Life Survey (AWS) were used to assess Burnout and contributory organizational risk factors amongst state-employed anaesthesiologists working at Groote Schuur Hospital. Results: Out of a possible 127 members of staff (Medical officers, Registrars and Consultants), 81 responded with 75 completing the full survey (59% response rate). Only 4% of respondents were classified as “burnt out”, defined as scoring 8 high in all three domains of Burnout: High Emotional Exhaustion and Depersonalization and Low Personal Accomplishment. However, 67% of respondents scored high for at least one of the components of Burnout, indicating the majority of the respondents are at risk for developing clinically significant Burnout. The Areas of Work-Life survey showed that respondents found their workload inappropriate. However, responses for the categories of Control, Reward, Community, Fairness and Values were all in the acceptable range. Conclusion: While the overall rate of Burnout was low, the majority of respondents were at risk of developing Burnout. High perceived workload appeared to be a particular contributory factor. Protection against Burnout in this group may be provided by a combination of few organisational risk factors together with feelings of personal accomplishment.

Kasper, Rafael Lembert. "What does it mean to be a pariah? : assimilation, depersonalization and uniqueness in the thought of Hannah Arendt." reponame:Biblioteca Digital de Teses e Dissertações da UFRGS, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10183/182974.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation questions the meaning of the pariah in Hannah Arendt’s work, aiming at its comprehension within the broader context of Arendt’s political thought. The research departed from articles published in the anthology The Jewish Writings, in which Arendt approached the pariah relying on experiences of European Jews, mainly between the 19th and the 20th centuries; dealt with The Origins of Totalitarianism, text in which she defined the exclusion and destruction of European pariahs, specially Jews, as the “catalytic agent” of Europe’s broader collapse; arrived at texts such as The Human Condition (1958), in which Arendt presented plurality and uniqueness as new principles required by the reestablishment of human dignity in a post-totalitarian world. Developed in non-monistic lines, this text deals with topics of Arendt’s work, as assimilation, the attempt of absorption of Jews and other pariahs by the “social”; depersonalization, the radical movement of dissolution of personality and alienation of the ego towards historical forces; and uniqueness, as a basic condition of plural and irreplaceable human beings. It holds, in broad terms, that the pariah’s experience, its exclusion, disappearance and attempt of reappearance, is a fundamental example for acting and thinking politically in the present world.

Abstract:
Burnout is a topic that is drawing an increasing amount of attention in the social work field. The compassion and emotional energy that is used daily by these service providers can cause them to experience emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal accomplishment. The effects of burnout are detrimental on several levels. Staff will experience decreased interest and efficiency in their work and may even leave their place of employment. Clients will not receive the help that they require and agencies will suffer from staff turnover and lowered productivity. Utilizing a survey including a burnout inventory and spirituality inventory, data was gathered regarding burnout and the spiritual attitudes and practices of 133 service providers. Results show that there is a negative significant relationship between depersonalization and spirituality. There was a positive significant relationship between personal accomplishment and spirituality. The correlation showed that personal accomplishment was negatively related to emotional exhaustion as well as depersonalization. These results are consistent with the literature in the way that it demonstrates that the use of spiritual beliefs and practices can reduce the effects of burnout on social workers.

Full text
Abstract:
A significant amount of previous research has addressed burnout among mental health professionals who work with individuals with severe and persistent mental disorders. Multiple issues can contribute to burnout including organizational factors, severity of client diagnosis, and low quality supervision (Lasalvia et al., 2009, Ballenger-Browning et al., 2011, Kozlawska, Nunn, & Cousens, 1997). The purpose of this study is to identify the most critical elements of burnout among public mental health professionals. This study is a systematic review, using 10 key articles, of existing literature on elements of burnout and contributing factors to developing burnout in public mental health professionals. The search yielded three major categories of dynamics: client specific characteristics, individual worker characteristics, and organizational/environmental characteristics. Identifying the red flag contributors to burnout in this segment of social work will be essential informing clinician’s practice in public mental health. Additionally, the findings from this study may be effective in macro practice in informing large-scale trainings for social workers as well as policy and legislation.

Fourie, Elizabeth. "The representation of materialist consumerism in film." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/954.

Full text
Abstract:
People are constantly bombarded with the latest technology, the latest fashion, the latest ‘must have’ item. We are encouraged to buy things that promise to change our lives and give us satisfaction or even create happiness. Interestingly we often succumb to the temptation of these material things, which is not always a negative reaction; however it does become negative when our lives are controlled by material possessions and we give up certain aspects of who we are to enable us to obtain these possessions. Further more it becomes problematic when we start to rely on material possessions to define us in terms of our identity or to help us fit into particular groups within society. With the media playing such a large role in societies at present it is almost inevitable that the phenomenon of materialist consumerism will make its way into the media. The media however holds control, to an extent, over whether or not materialist consumerism is viewed in a negative or affirmative light. An analysis of the representation of materialist consumerism in selected instances of mainstream cinema will be the aim of my proposed study. The study will look at the representation of materialist consumerism in so far as it offers viewers a place to ‘fit’ into a particular group within society. The group I am referring to can be categorised as the upper-middle class of contemporary western society. I have thus selected films that represent this group specifically. For the purpose of the treatise ‘materialist consumerism’ is understood as a way of life, or alternatively, an ideology, which assumes that the accumulation of material wealth through consumption imparts meaning to human lives. The treatise will analyse both sides of the coin, or in other words films that support or promote materialist consumerism and those that either revolt against or criticise this form of consumerism. The study will explore different aspects of consumerism in so far as these are represented in the films, with an identifiable axiological bias.

Abstract:
The thought of Emmanuel Mounier had developed as a synthesis between the metaphysical exigency of the constitution of the concept of person and the existencial requirements of its own unpredictability and paradox which generally mark the personal life. These concerns of conceptual order, from which Mounier will develop his anthropology, add up to the concerns of material order, that is, Mounier will always try to think the person placed into his social context and realize how the influences of this sphere interfere on personal lifeâs development. Therefore, we can say the thought of Mounier is better understood when we try to perceive the interconnections between the anthropological and political concerns presented in his philosophy. To Mounier, the person canât be defined, for it is not an object. However, it possesses personal dimensions that are like traces to penetrate into the personal universe. These are the dimensions (incarnation, communication, and vocation) which become reference to the properly human exist, and such exist (that Mounier calls personal life) becomes the reference to the personalist community understanding. To Mounier the notion of person is only completed with the notion of community, in fact they are complemented ideas, former of a binomial opposed both to individualism and coletivism. To Mounier, the personalist community itâs an ideal, a model that do not perform an achievable realization in this world, but must be anyway a model to our actions in search for a sociability compatible with human dignity. It is precisely in view of the personalist community model and the capacity that each political organization has to make the personal life that Mounier shall distinguish the political and economic systems in personalizers and depersonalizers. Hence emerges his critics to the various totalitarianism and the capitalism, as well as his proposal of a sociability compatible with the personal dignity

The study entitled The esthetics of silence in A Paixão segundo G.H. aims to analyze the esthetic meaning of silence and its forms of representation. The study takes into account the fictional expedients of silence that unfold by means of otherness, temporal plan of work and the extinction of the subject matter. The passion of G. H. is permeated by the process of depersonalization, denouncing the experiment of the author with the language. The dramatic struggle between speech and language is spread by the difficulty of the report and its experience markedly epiphanic transgresses what is really meant to say. On her work, the image built of an assumed reader, makes him a partner of the instability of the narrator, mistrusting her own narrative. This procedure makes the word evil and sadistic because it destabilizes who has participated in the trajectory of GH, experiencing her passion

Abstract:
The burnout syndrome is defined as a high level of physical and emotional exhaustion that is characterized by the presence of three dimensions: emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and personal accomplishment. Professionals who suffer from burnout exhibit high levels of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization and low personal accomplishment, and the presence of this syndrome results in a consistent and progressive decrease in work ability, interest and increase the difficulty level and professional relationship personnel. The main objective of this work was to characterize the Burnout Syndrome (its three dimensions) in pharmaceuticals. A cross-sectional observational typology was performed by applying a survey consisting of a socio-demographic part and professional context and another by the designated scale of the Maslach Burnout Inventory and Jackson (Maslach & Jackson, 1986, adapted by Cross & Melo 1996), to a group of pharmaceuticals. The results showed that in the sample (consisting of 53 pharmacists, mean age 37.4 ± 13.1 years, 86.8 % women, 60.4 % were married, 20.8 % with administrative duties, 84.9 % to be self-employed, 54.7 % with permanent contracts, engaged in this profession for 12.6 ± 11.9 years and work on average 8.2 ± 0.8 hours/day) no pharmacist had both high levels Emotional Exhaustion, Depersonalization, and low Personal Accomplishment, so none suffer from burnout. Two (3.8 %) showed high level of emotional exhaustion, one (1.9 %) high level of depersonalization and 9 (17 %) low level of personal accomplishment. Emotional Exhaustion differs significantly by number of children (p = 0.002). The Depersonalization differs significantly with having children (p = 0.049) and the type of contract (p = 0.006) of the pharmacist. Have a Personal Fulfillment differs by gender (p = 0.007), marital status (p = 0.006), having children (p = 0.033) , and number of children (p = 0.005) , type of contract (p = 0.024) , and work at the weekend and / or holiday (p = 0.049) . In this context, although the results have not been expressive, but let us draw attention to the need to consider the pharmacy professionals in studies on burnout.

The thought of Emmanuel Mounier had developed as a synthesis between the metaphysical exigency of the constitution of the concept of person and the existencial requirements of its own unpredictability and paradox which generally mark the personal life. These concerns of conceptual order, from which Mounier will develop his anthropology, add up to the concerns of material order, that is, Mounier will always try to think the person placed into his social context and realize how the influences of this sphere interfere on personal life’s development. Therefore, we can say the thought of Mounier is better understood when we try to perceive the interconnections between the anthropological and political concerns presented in his philosophy. To Mounier, the person can’t be defined, for it is not an object. To Mounier, the personalist community it’s an ideal, a model that do not perform an achievable realization in this world, but must be anyway a model to our actions in search for a sociability compatible with human dignity. It is precisely in view of the personalist community model and the capacity that each political organization has to make the personal life that Mounier shall distinguish the political and economic systems in personalizers and depersonalizers. Hence emerges his critics to the various totalitarianism and the capitalism, as well as his proposal of a sociability compatible with the personal dignity.

Abstract:
The concept of the “burnout” syndrome is comparatively new. The concept “burnout” was assimilated from the English language. The “burnout” syndrome, as a scientific concept, was used for the first time by the American psychoanalyst of the German origin H.Freudenber in the year 1974. The theme was chosen non-accidentally. This sphere is usually not emphasized in pedagogy; attention is drawn more towards the objective knowledge and towards the methods of its conveyance to pupils. The novelty of this thesis lies in the fact that not many scientific literature and articles on this topic are written in Lithuania. Thus, this theme has been insufficiently investigated; this fact provides a lot of possibilities for investigation of the theme of the present thesis.

Abstract:
Awareness due to increase crime has highlighted the occurrence of immense personal and social problems. Problems resulting from disorders such as Schizophrenia, Alzheimer's and Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) are less common but have a profound impact on all of us. Research has shown that 97% of people with severe abuse and life trauma before the age of nine, develop DID. The objective of this study was to investigate (from the perspectives of therapists) the experience of people diagnosed with Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) in the workplace. A qualitative research design was used to capture the essence of the individual's experience thereby enabling the researcher to develop an understanding from the participant's point of view. In this study seven therapists were interviewed and each completed a questionnaire. This was the basis used to demonstrate the typical behaviour of DID in the workplace. The results indicated that DIDs cope to a certain extent but tend to switch (switching) personalities when exposed to trauma, stress or events that triggers past life trauma. Defense mechanisms and switching can have a negative influence on the organisation and its employees, but most of all on the DID. If professional treatment is available, the condition can be fully cured. Most patients treated were female, averaged 29 years of age, were single, and had experienced some kind of abuse. Patients experienced problems directly related to DID, such as lack of concentration, attention deficiency and memory loss, depression, migraine and constant headaches. Their behaviour is inconsistent and unpredictable, and they experience relationship problems. Results show that DIDs can hold relatively senior positions but tend to change jobs on a regular basis. Although this condition can be differentiated from other Psychological conditions, most DIDs have previously been misdiagnosed. A Psychological-based paradigm is mostly used to diagnose the condition. Recommendations to the organisation (especially to the HR department) and recommendations for future research were made.

Judd, Tanya. "THE EFFECT OF NATIONAL BOARD CERTIFICATION ON BURNOUT LEVELS IN EDUCATORS." Doctoral diss., University of Central Florida, 2007. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETD/id/3669.

Abstract:
Teacher attrition and retention has become a major issue facing education policymakers and practioners as our nation's school age population continues to grow, but the teaching workforce does not. This study seeks to examine the impact of certification by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) on burnout levels in educators. The potential benefits to teachers who pursue NBPTS certification include a sense of professional pride, new leadership roles and responsibilities for teachers, recognition of outstanding teaching practice, and higher salaries (Shapiro, 1995). Some of these potential rewards seem to address a number of the factors that are related to the onset burnout, and therefore may reduce teacher attrition. The study utilized the Maslach-Leiter conceptual framework to examine burnout, which breaks the burnout construct into three separate dimensions; emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal accomplishment. The research questions sought to determine if there was a difference between National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs) and their non-certified peers in each of these dimensions of burnout. The research sample consisted of the NBCTs and a comparable random sample of their non-certified peers from a large urban school district in the Central Florida area. The Maslach Burnout Inventory Educators Survey was used a basis of comparison of the burnout levels. The two groups were compared utilizing an independent samples t-test. The instrument utilized in this study also included demographic questions, as well as questions that were designed to measure the various elements of the Maslach-Leiter theoretical model of burnout. These questions and the independent variable NBPTS certification were included in a multiple regression analysis in order to determine if the differences noted between the groups using the independent samples t-tests were in fact a result of NBPTS certification, and not the theoretical model itself. The instruments were mailed in the fall of 2006, and were returned to the researcher anonymously. A total of 476 surveys were returned, for a response rate of 52%. The independent samples t-tests revealed significant differences between NBCTs and their non-certified peers on all three dimensions of burnout. An examination of the individual scores for each group revealed that in each of the dimensions showed that the NBCTs demonstrated lower levels of experienced burnout in each dimension. The multiple regression analyses that were conducted to confirm that NBPTS certification was in fact a significant factor in the development of each burnout dimension revealed mixed results. Emotional exhaustion and reduced personal accomplishment were both found to have a significant negative relationship with NBPTS certification, which indicates that the NBCTs are significantly less burned out then their non-certified peers. Despite the initial finding of significance in the independent samples t-test, NBPTS certification was not found to be a significant factor in the onset of the depersonalization dimension of burnout. This relationship needs further exploration in future studies. The significant difference between the research and control groups in this study suggests that NBPTS certification may reduce burnout levels in at least two dimensions. Legislators and policymakers at the state and federal levels have provided millions of dollars to support NBPTS certification. These findings seem to indicate that this financial support has impacted burnout levels in educators, and may therefore warrant examination as a strategy to address the issue of teacher attrition.

Abstract:
Burnout in the social work field is becoming increasingly common due to the emotional intensity of the client-social worker relationship and job demands. Research has shown that burnout has detrimental effects not only on the social worker themselves but on clients and agencies as well. Limited research exists examining which professional setting of social work experiences the highest level of burnout. This study used secondary data collected by, Dr. Lizano in 2016 from the 4thAnnual California State University, San Bernardino BASW and MSW Field Instructor Training. A quantitative method was used to analyze which setting of social work (child welfare, mental health, medical, and educational) has the highest level of burnout. Findings from this study suggest there is a relationship between mental health social workers experiencing burnout compared to the other fields of social work. Specifically, depersonalization was the only dimension of job burnout that had significant findings among mental health social workers. This study has implications on both the micro and macro level of social work. Being able to identity which setting of social work is suffering the most from burnout is crucial to develop preventative measures for social worker well-being.

Abstract:
The cyber trader is distinguished from traditional shop trader through thedematerialization of his activities due to the use of Internet. Thus, the dematerialization of thecyber trader’s activities, despite the benefits, raises two sets of problems due to ubiquity anddepersonalization. Ubiquity is manifested by the fact that the website of the cyber trader isavailable in almost all States. Depersonalization creates risks due, on the one hand, to the lackof physical presence of the contracting parties and the other hand, to the use of electronicsupport to conclude the contract. The objective is to destroy the harmful effects of ubiquityand depersonalization in order to secure the environment of the e-commerce professional. Thesolution is to apply general rules to the cyber trader and reject special rules. Ultimately, thisstudy on the cyber trader allows confronting the new to the old concepts in order to discorverthat the Internet affecting the trader’s activity through dematerialization, helps to revitalizetraditional concepts by making us aware of the dangers of new solutions requiring thedevelopment of special rules. In this sense, the digital revolution invites more to a rereadingof the law than a revolution of the law

Abstract:
This aim of this study was to answer the research question: "What is the Life Pattern of the Person with Spinal Cord Injury?" The unitary appreciative inquiry design, which has conceptualized through Rogers' (1986) science of unitary human beings, provided an approach for understanding the phenomenon in the context of human wholeness. The data, obtained through the methodology of unitary appreciative inquiry, led to the development of individual synopses for each of the participants. Once the synopses were completed, a composite pattern profile was constructed by the researcher that was indicative of the life pattern of people with spinal cord injury. The participants in the study validated the synopsis and pattern profile as accurate representations of their experience with spinal cord injury. This qualitative study, which was comprised of eight people who had undergone a spinal cord injury more than two years prior to the study, discovered three shared pattern manifestations: depersonalization; loss; and hopelessness. Although each person within this inquiry had a very good physical outcome concerning their spinal cord injury, the participants were not pleased with their current state of being. The pattern of despair, which was validated by the participants, was manifested through the profound sense of depersonalization, loss, and hopelessness.

This work intends to make a critical analysis of the works of literary art, Hotel Atlantico and Lorde, by João Gilberto Noll. The aspects related to deterritorialization and depersonalization of the central character of the novels will be addressed. Our objective is to propose a study, based on the works cited, taking contemporary critical theories as a critical analysis approach, considering the changes in aesthetic practice and the consequent rupture with the notion of art as a representation of reality. It is proposed as a methodological foundation, the bibliographical research with a view to approaching the cartographic tracings that contemplate the procedural events during the research. Thus, we will use the ideas of Deleuze and Guattari and Michel Maffesoli, with reference in deterritorialization and nomadism. Still from this perspective, other contributions like those of Walter Bejamin on the "loss of the aura"; Jean Baudrillard, in Simulacros and Simulation; Guy Debord, Scocius of the Spectacle; Jean-François Lyotard, The Postmodern Condition; Zigmund Bauman, the notion of Net Modernity, among others.

Abstract:
Nowadays, the concept of Employability has been increasingly debated in the sense that there are fewer long-term contractual links compared to a few years ago. In this sense, it has become important to study the perception Employees have regarding Employability in their organization (Internal Employability) and in the current labor market (External Employability). Another concept addressed throughout this dissertation is Burnout since it was considered pertinent to understand if there is an effect of Employability Perception (Internal or External) on Burnout and its three dimensions: Exhaustion, Personal Achievement and Depersonalization. It has become important to study this concept as employability has become an ambiguous situation and it is proven that uncertainty generates stress. Results indicate that Employability Perception has a significant association in Burnout; There is a negative relationship between Employability Perception and Exhaustion levels; There is a positive relationship between Employability Perception and Personal Achievement levels; There is a negative relationship between Employability Perception and Depersonalization levels. As such, if Human Resources Management intends to act on the concept of Burnout, it is important to understand which of its dimensions are being affected.

Chahbar, Taoufik. Thesis, Paris 10, 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018PA100097.

Full text
Abstract:
The e-commerce business is usually embodied in a traditional legal tool made available to economic actors by the law: the contract. This one is usually signed from afar. Thus it is dematerialized. In addition, there is the possibility of depersonalization and internationalization thanks to the ability of computer networks to break free of borders. These characteristics of the e-commerce contract have disrupted the legal framework. The latter being essentially aimed at regulating a contractual relationship in which the parties involved are human beings by using tangible elements. In such a situation, an adjustment process due to the new parameters of the electronic commerce contract is required for the law to avoid a historical setback. French and Moroccan laws have proved to be reactive insofar as contract law here and there already witnesses a process of adaptation to the new parameters of the electronic commerce contract. The analysis of such a process reveals; the advent of rules specific to such a contract; certain rules have been declared inapplicable; some institutions have been rethought taking into account these new parameters and definitions of existing concepts have been introduced as part of such a process. The comparison between French contract law and Moroccan contract law in the field of electronic commerce contracts allowed us to observe the shortcomings. Thus, we noted, but not exhaustively, that: the capacity-rule in the current state of French or Moroccan positive law is detrimental to the signing of the contract by "electronic agents"; the application of the reasonable time limit to the offer by electronic means under French law is incompatible with the need for competitive intelligence which is felt in the virtual market (cyberspace) more than elsewhere; the Moroccan legislator has been quite firm in recognizing the quality of the offer through electronic means by ignoring certain advertising techniques which allow immediate sale; etc. Any initiative likely to fill such gaps must be entrusted to the case law, since the case-law is not mandatory, it is likely to be rejected or modified at any time when a new case is examined. This turnaround possibility makes it possible to work alongside the evolving nature of the e-commerce contract. The legislator's intervention in the field of electronic commerce contracts, insofar as it is necessary, must be limited to adopting existing legal frameworks in order to remove the real obstacles resulting from a legal constraint

Caudill, Helene L. (Helene Litowsky). "An Empirical Investigation of Personality and Situational Predictors of Job Burnout." Thesis, University of North Texas, 1996. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc278937/.

Full text
Abstract:
Empirical research exploring the complex phenomenon of job burnout is still considered to be in its infancy stage. One clearly established stream of research, though, has focused on the antecedents of the three job burnout components: emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment. In particular, situational characteristics have received a great deal of attention to date. Four situational factors: (1) role ambiguity, (2) role conflict, (3) quantitative role overload, and (4) organizational support were included in this analysis to test their significance as predictors of job burnout. Another set of antecedents that has received far less attention in job burnout research is personal dispositions. Individual differences, most notably personality traits, may help us understand why some employees experience burnout whereas others do not, even within the same work environment. Four personality characteristics: (1) self-esteem, (2) locus of control, (3) communal orientation, and (4) negative affectivity were included to test their significance as predictors of job burnout. An on-site, self-report survey instrument was used. A sample of 149 human service professionals employed at a large government social services department voluntarily participated in this research. The main data analysis techniques used to test the research hypotheses were canonical correlation analysis and hierarchical analysis of sets. While role ambiguity showed no significant associations with any of the three job burnout components, the remaining situational factors had at least one significant association. Among all the situational characteristics, quantitative role overload was the strongest situational predictor of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization, while organizational support was the strongest situational predictor of personal accomplishment. The personality predictor set as a whole showed a significant relationship with each of the job burnout components, providing strong proof that dispositional effects are important in predicting job burnout. Among all the personality characteristics, negative affectivity was the strongest personality predictor of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization, while communal orientation was the strongest personality predictor of personal accomplishment. Comparisons between the personality and situational predictor sets revealed that personality characteristics were the stronger predictor for all three of the job burnout components. No interactions among the situational and personality predictors proved significant.

Abstract:
This dissertation studies the outcomes that higher education courses and seminars in stress management have on the stress levels of pastors. It identifies stress level differences between a sample of pastors who have and who have not been trained in stress management. The instrument that was used to assess the levels of stress was the Maslach Burnout Inventory. The Inventory is a twenty-two item dual-rating instrument that measures the frequency and intensity of three aspects of the burnout syndrome: emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and a lack of personal accomplishment. Demographic questions were used to determine the respondents' sex, age, education, and experience in the clergy. These questions were asked for descriptive purposes only. In addition, questions were asked that would determine whether or not the pastors had had stress management training.

Abstract:
Magister Artium - MA
This study aims to explore the family environment of non-admitting sex offenders in order to gain insight into the family characteristics that could be contributing factors towards the behaviour of denial. However, the focus will not be on the families of the sex offenders, but rather on the non-admitting sex offenders’ views of their family environment. The theoretical framework used is the Social Learning Theory, because it supports the fact that most behaviour is learned through modelling the behaviour of others. The researcher used a qualitative approach and the aim of the study was to generate information that would describe the family environment of non-admitting sex offenders. The population of this study was incarcerated, sentenced sex offenders with specific focus on the non-admitting sex offender as the unit of analysis. Ten (10) participants were purposively selected for the study and semi-structured interviews were conducted with each one in order to generate the needed information for the study

The concept of poetic impersonality was widely spread in literature starting at the beginning of the twentieth century. Considering that meaning and aesthetical intention of the impersonal poetry can vary, according to theoretical guidance adopted, in this work we have used the concepts of Impersonality and Depersonalization as theorized and practiced by Thomas Stearns Eliot (1888-1968), recognized English language author, whose work met great and immediate repercussion and influenced his generation and subsequent artists and by Fernando Pessoa (1888-1935), poet of great importance to the Portuguese language literature, who, as shown by previous researches, presents aesthetical work similar to the English language author s. In this work, we have listed the main points in which these authors concepts of poetic making distancing between personality and poetic voice are similar. Through this research, we have attempted to demonstrate that (1) the author Ana Cristina Cesar shared the aesthetic concepts of Eliot s and Pessoa s, presenting similar ideas to the ones listed and fundamental to the authors we have chosen; and (2) Cesar s poetic work presents similar characteristics of poetic depersonalization found in Pessoa s and Eliot s work, characterizing it as impersonal. Thus, our object is not only to investigate this important poet of Brazilian literature, but mainly demonstrated how she continues the aesthetic project of impersonallity developed and theorized by the authors cited, and, in a general manner, distancing between the author s personality and the poetic voice.

Abstract:

This study examined three schools
namely a Public, Ex model C, and a Youth juvenile rehabilitation school. A non-experimental survey design was used for this study. The sample consisted of 47 educators across the three types of schools. Data was collected by means of two instruments: a demographic questionnaire, and the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) consisting of three subscales namely
Emotional Exhaustion, Depersonalization, and Diminished Personal Accomplishment. It was hypothesised that due to the stressful nature of work in disadvantaged and resource lacking schools, as well as the unstable and unsafe environment in certain schools, burnout among educators in Public and Youth juvenile rehabilitation schools will have a higher prevalence rate than educators in Ex model C schools. The study also aimed to identify which various educator demographic variables correlate with high burnout levels. Correlational results of the study found no significant relationships between the three subscales of the MBI and certain educator demographic variables across the three types of schools. The results of an Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) test revealed a borderline non-significant difference in the Emotional Exhaustion subscale between the Youth juvenile rehabilitation school and Public schools. Post Hoc comparison tests suggested Public school educators in the sample had the highest levels of burnout in terms of Emotional Exhaustion across the three types of schools, while educators in the Youth juvenile rehabilitation schools showed the lowest levels of burnout in terms of Emotional exhaustion. The results of the present study were discussed from the perspective of the Conservation of Resources theory, suggesting resource depletion as a central facet to burnout and how prolonged stress leads to burnout. Future qualitative studies exploring the etiology of burnout was thus recommended.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to determine if there was a relationship between occupational burnout and the behavioral well-being of social workers. Burnout is a multidimensional syndrome where workers experience feelings of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal accomplishment as a consequence of work related stress and overwhelming job demands. Burnout can negatively affect organizational functioning, work performance, and pose significant health risks to workers. There are a limited number of studies focusing on the impact of occupational burnout on the behavioral well-being of workers. The findings of this study indicated that there was a significant relationship between burnout and behavioral well-being. Emotional exhaustion was found to negatively impact exercise frequency, which was consistent with previous study findings. Depersonalization was positively correlated to the number of hours of sleep and the frequency of self-care activities participants engaged in. The effects of depersonalization on sleep and self-care activities suggest that workers may engage in these activities as a way to cope with feelings of depersonalization on the job.

Abstract:
In the last stage of development of capitalism, transfers of businesses are frequent. For this purpose, legal systems have regulated procedures to protect creditors and shareholders. In Peruvian legal system, the General Law of Corporations regulates these kinds of transfers through mergers, divisions and reorganizations. However, those operations influence in employment relationships because of the translation of its productive organizations. Even though, there is no regulation to determine the consequences of transfer in these kinds of relations in an organizational way, this legal gap is tend to be solved through the application of the principle of continuity developed by Peruvian jurisprudence. In this short paper, it defines the concept, elements, and the effects of the transfer of an undertaking from the perspective of labor law, giving special attention to the analysis of what the author calls “collateral “ or unwanted effects transfer , as aspects that go beyond the principle of continuity to safeguard labor rights.

Foloppe, Virginie. "Dépersonnalisations : du traumatisme à la création." Thesis, Paris 3, 2011. http://www.theses.fr/2011PA030131.

Full text
Abstract:
Does creation as something to do with the "exercise of severe depersonalization" claimed by Gilles Deleuze in the invention of a personal identity? What methods, directors Alfred Hitchcock, Thomas Vinterberg and Kim Ki-duk they invented to represent women and men subject to the conditions so intolerable that depersonalize them ? Finally, what links can be made between a depersonalization that is a survival strategy to trauma, and another that reflects the tremendous power of the creative act ? My thinking is at the intersection part of two forms of depersonalization in which the psychoanalyst Michel M'Uzan said the radically different fates. Each, he says, is accompanied by distinct affect. Also from these essential differences in the quality of the emotion and the destiny, I analyze in my thesis, the manner in which the creator is able to show us how to deflect the destructive violence of one to for the creative power of the other. Throughout my demonstration, the frequent passages between the narration and the poïesis allowed me, as a result of the proposed Gilles Deleuze and the notion of creativity Donald Woods Winnicott, to consider also creation in terms of identity

Winther, Alexander. "The Social Dimension of the Self: Self-formation as Revealed by Depersonalization." Thesis, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10012/5556.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis I investigate the social and cultural dimensions of the self through an examination of the psychiatric disorder of depersonalization. Specifically, I apply Thagard's Multilevel Interacting Mechanisms framework to depersonalization, which reveals the complex interaction between the phenomenal nature of the illness, and the (culturally construed) conception of the self. I argue that in addition to being a factor for this particular mental illness, the Western independent conception of the self is descriptively incomplete. These conclusions have both bioethical implications for the optimal treatment of depersonalization, and conceptual implications as to our understanding of the self. In the former case, I advocate for greater recognition of the social and cultural contributions to depersonalization, and a more pro-active response to potentially unhealthy self-concepts. With respect to the self, I argue that despite the lack of a 'single monolithic self-concept', the self can be understood as unified both phenomenally, and more broadly by taking a multilevel approach. Depersonalization has been chosen for this project as it is challenging (and ultimately revealing) on two fronts; first it is an incredibly subtle yet disturbing phenomenal experience that affects approximately 2.5 percent of the Canadian population, making it an ideal subject for fostering an understanding of the phenomenal subtleties of selfhood. Secondly, the rates of depersonalization vary dramatically across cultures, and I shall argue that this is largely a result of divergent conceptions of the self. An integrative multilevel account of depersonalization will help explain how these phenomenal and social components operate within the larger phenomena of selfhood.

Role identity is very important to every professional in any field. It helps employees to understand their duty and also help to improve efficiency of the organization as a whole. Although there should not be any negative emotion which would influence the performance of employees, it has become more relevant that these negative emotions would affect the performance of the organization. For example, a tired employee is more probably to decrease his or her efficiency, which can further influence the entire organization. In other occasions, it also causes higher employee turnover rate, negative attitudes toward their duty, and decreasing performance. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship among Role Identity (RI), Emotional Labor (EL) and Depersonalization (DEP) about first-line employees. The study is based on an anonymous survey done by 326 first-line employees, and 91.41% of the questionnaires is valid. The shown results are as follows: 1. This study found that role identification was negatively related to surface acting and depersonalization, but positively related to deep acting. 2. Surface acting influenced depersonalization positively, but deep acting influenced depersonalization negatively. 3. Above results was run by path analysis revealed the intervening variable (surface acting and deep acting) had obvious impact on role identity and depersonalization. The authors discussed the implications for theory and practices, and suggestions for the further study.

Abstract:
Introduction: Burnout is a three-dimensional syndrome characterized by emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and decreased professional satisfaction, due to a chronic response to excessive occupational stress. It affects, particularly, the medical staff and is problematic at the individual and organizational level, compromising the quality of care provided. The main aim of the present study was to review the burnout syndrome, specifically in the medical staff, to alert to the need for an urgent change and also to evaluate the national panorama. Methods: For the review I used scientific and review articles, researched in databases of Pubmed, Cochrane Library and Clinical Key, restricting the research to articles in Portuguese or English, published in the last 5 years. Also, I accessed the digital portal of the Portuguese Medical Order to include national studies on the subject. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied in two phases, selecting the most pertinent articles for the purpose of the study. Results: Applied the eligibility criteria, I selected 27 articles and 2 reports. Burnout is widespread in the medical class, and an increase has been observed over the years. It has a multifactorial origin, with several triggers, both at personal level, as in the workplace or inherent to the clinical practice. At all levels of the professional's life, several consequences are recorded, verifying a reduction in the quality of medical services. To combat this syndrome, a holistic approach is needed, with a commitment to change, in all areas of the professional.Discussion: The results obtained in Portugal were mostly compatible with the ones in the international literature. However, the national prevalence was higher than the United States and the male gender indicated greater depersonalization. Regarding the specialties, the studies weren’t concordant and didn’t allow valid conclusions. Conclusion: Burnout is underrated and has an aberrant impact on the medical class and on those in their care. Thus, further investigation is necessary to understand this syndrome and changes have to be carried out in the national health system to combat it.

Abstract:
Latitudinaria* explores and critiques the ambivalence between current technological progress and the consequently depersonalised social structures and systems. I am using the development from mechanical Automata to mass production juxtaposed to Charlie Chaplin??s film and Jean Tinguelys kinetic art, as examples for the change of the social condition from the industrialisation to the current post-industrial era. The change of social condition I refer to as the ??depersonalisation?? or ??dehumanisation?? effect supported by my working experiences in the health system. The ??medicalisation of the life span?? and the discrepancy of creating a sustainable future less profit orientated are two indicators of how far we have been removed from our bodies. These observations are supported by the writing of Ivan Illich??s Medical Nemesis and Frank Schirrmachers?? analysis of the change of the social structure using the family configuration as an example. These conceptual ideas are visualised by a selection of kinetic art works and video installations. In the heart of this body of work is the process-orientated documentation of Zero AGL project. The project documents the journey of a discarded airplane that was re-assembled and reanimated by myself and a group of volunteers supported by local businesses. The struggle of the group of people stands as a metaphor for the current dilemma of the restricted usage of public space. Further it reflects on my own limitations dealing with the Australian outback culture and the transition of my own sculptural practice from small scale art works into the arena of life size public Art. Those experiences shaped the process and the direction of the project. The motivation for the creation of the body of kinetic sculptures and video installation is to highlight the absurdity of social constructed categories and controlling systems in a post-industrial society. The subject matter focuses on the social construction of the categories of the ??Norm?? and the limitations of failure. Latitudinaria gives the audience a lateral view on how human betterment is not always essentially connected to technological progress but on transforming ideas and enhancing it from a different point of view. * freedom from normal restraints, limitations and regulations.

EN : The work is presented on 82 pages, 6 figures, 6 tables. The list of references includes 72 sources. The object of research is professional deformations in the system of professions "man-man". The new Ukrainian school, the humanization of education, a thorough restructuring of approaches to teaching and education highlight the central problem of improving the efficiency of the educational process, the human factor as a major in the system of social relations. It is this factor that directs, regulates and controls the system of human relationships, as well as the cognitive and emotional components of the interaction between student and teacher. But, usually, the center of the problem is the child's personality ("child-centeredness"), on which all participants in the educational process are concentrated, and only then the personality of the teacher who works directly with children is mentioned. But now it is the educator who is under pressure from such negative phenomena as life instability, uncertainty about the future, the coronavirus epidemic, and so on. Therefore, as a result, problems in the emotional sphere of the teacher continue to worsen, which affects the quality of his professional activity and contributes to the emergence of emotional burnout. Emotional burnout is a syndrome that develops under the influence of chronic stress and constant stress, which leads to depletion of emotional, energy and personal resources. Emotional burnout occurs as a result of the accumulation of negative emotions without the ability to prevent the pressure of negative factors and the inability (based on ignorance) of ways to prevent this phenomenon. Scientific novelty systematizes the factors of emotional burnout among teachers of various types of industrial cities; identified ways to activate the factors of emotional burnout; the author's program of prevention of emotional burnout among pedagogical workers is developed and tested.

Abstract:
This thesis will deal with social support perceived by intensive care unit nurses (from colleagues, family, friends and superiors) and its impact on job satisfaction, depersonalization and subjectively experienced health condition. Foreign research suggests that social support has crucial effect on amount of perceived stress, coping and quality of provided health care. Lack of support can also contribute to the development of psychosomatic diseases like headache, back pain and others. Main attention will be paid to the influence of social support on depersonalization (emotional hardness, apathy towards the patient), job satisfaction and intensive care nurses subjectively experienced health condition. Basic concepts, terms, constructs and variables will be defined in the theoretical part of this thesis.
