Abstract:
Aim: Present study attempts to assess the correlation between co-dependency and quality of marital life among wives of alcohol dependence clients. Materials and Methods: Descriptivecorrelational design with a non-probability purposive sampling method was used. The sample of this study comprised of 50 wives of clients with alcohol dependence admitted to the Deaddiction center. Data was collected using the Socio-demographic proforma, co-dependency scale, and marital quality scale to assess the correlation between the level of co-dependency and quality of marital life. Results: In this study, the result shows that the sample's co-dependency scale indicates that 8% of respondents were moderately co-dependent and 92% were highly co-dependent, and none of them were completely independent. The quality of marital life scale shows that 78% were moderately affected, 20% have severely affected, and the remaining 2% were mildly affected by marital quality. The computed value of Karl Pearson’s correlation coefficient was + 0.627. So this shows there exists a positive correlation between co-dependency and the Quality of Marital life. Analysis of socio-demographic variables with co-dependency level shows no significance, and quality of marital life showed a significant association between husbands' educations, duration of husband’s alcoholism, duration of stay in the de-addiction center, number of children. Thus the study result revealed a positive correlation between the level of Co-dependency and quality of marital life. Conclusion: The study's findings revealed a positive correlation between the level of co-dependency and quality of marital life among wives of clients with alcohol dependence. Key words: Co-dependency, Quality of marital life, Alcohol dependence.

Full text
Abstract:
Traffic prediction is the key for Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) to achieve traffic control and traffic guidance, and the key challenge is that traffic flow has complex spatial-temporal dependence and nonlinear dynamics. Aiming at the lack of the ability to model complex and dynamic spatial-temporal dependencies in current research, this paper proposes a traffic flow prediction model Attention based Graph Convolution Network (GCN) and Transformer (AGCN-T) to model spatial-temporal network dynamics of traffic flow, which can extract dynamic spatial dependence and long-distance temporal dependence to improve the accuracy of multistep traffic prediction. AGCN-T consists of three modules. In the spatial dependency extraction module, according to the similarity of historical traffic flow sequences of different loop detectors, an adjacency matrix for the road network is constructed based on a sequence similarity calculation method, Predictive Power Score (PPS), to express latent spatial dependency; and then GCN is used on the adjacency matrix to capture the global spatial correlation and Transformer is used to capture dynamic spatial dependency from the most recently flow sequences. And then, the dynamic spatial dependency is merged with the global spatial correlation to obtain the overall spatial dependency pattern. In the temporal dependency extraction module, the temporal dependency pattern of each traffic flow sequence is learned by the temporal Transformer. The prediction module integrates both patterns to form spatial-temporal dependency patterns and performs multistep traffic flow prediction. Four sets of experiments are performed on three actual traffic datasets to show that AGCN-T can effectively capture the dynamic spatial-temporal dependency of the traffic network, and its prediction performance and efficiency are better than existing baselines. AGCN-T can effectively capture the dynamics in traffic flow. In addition to traffic flow prediction, it can also be applied to other spatial-temporal prediction tasks, such as passenger demand prediction and crowd flow prediction.

Abstract:
Chi-squared test is a standard statistical test to ascertain independence between categorical variables. So, it is recommended to do the test for the attributes in the datasets, and remove any redundant attributes before we supply the datasets to machine learning algorithms. But, if we have many attributes that are common in real-world datasets, it is not easy to choose two attributes to do the independence test. On the other hand, several automated algorithms to find functional dependencies based on data have been suggested. Because functional dependencies show many-to-one relationships between values of attributes, we could conjecture that there might be statistical dependence in the found functional dependencies. For us to overcome the problem of choosing appropriate attributes for statistical dependency tests, we may use some algorithms for automated functional dependency finding. We want to confirm that the found functional dependencies can show statistical dependence between attributes in real-world datasets. Experiments were performed for three different real-world datasets using SPSS to confirm the statistical dependence of functional dependencies that are found by an open-source tool called FDtool, where we can use FDtool for automated functional dependency discovery. The experiments confirmed that there exists statistical dependence in the found functional dependencies and showed improvements in decision trees after removing dependent attributes.

Abstract:
Oral health contributes to personal wellbeing and quality of life. Use of tobacco in smoke or smokeless form is one of the driving reasons for global mortality. Also, it plays a major role in causing morbidity of major non- communicable diseases, including tooth morbidity in the form of periodontitis and tooth mortality. Therefore, the aim of the study is to find out the prevalence and association of nicotine dependence and tooth loss. A retrospective study was done using the case records of outpatients attending a private Dental College and Hospital. One month case records with a total of 100 case sheets of current smoker males were retrieved. Case sheets which recorded nicotine dependence using the Fagerstrom Test for Nicotine Dependence (FTND) and the number of tooth loss were used for data analysis. Descriptive and chi-square association were the statistical tests done. Patients of age more than 45 (27%) have a lesser dependency for the tobacco of 22.2% when compared to 15 to 30 years (39%) have tobacco dependency of 50%. In between lies the age group of 30-35 years (34%) had tobacco dependency of (27.7%), and there was no statistically significant association between level of nicotine dependency and tooth loss (P>0.05). Patients with high nicotine dependency of age 15-30 years had minimum tooth loss than patients of age more than 45years with a low level of nicotine dependency.

Abstract:
Background. Khat chewing is highly prevalent in Africa, Yemen and Jazan region, southwest of Saudi Arabia. Most of Jazani Khat chewers consider khat session as a social activity and do not consider khat dependency. The aim of this study was to explore khat dependency and its relationship with the psychophysical symptoms among chewers.Methods. Cross-sectional study on seventy Saudi male khat chewers living in Jazan area. Psychological dependence to khat chewing was evaluated using the Severity of Dependency Scale (SDS). The participants filled in a self-administrated assisted structured questionnaire designed to collect data about their medical history, neurological symptoms, and their chewing behavior.Results. Half (52.2%) of khat chewers showed psychological dependency. Those having longer khat sessions (≥6 hours) were more liable for dependency. Physical and psychological symptoms were more prevalent among khat dependent chewers.Conclusions. khat has a psychological dependence effect that can be measured by the SDS, even in low doses and with irregular use. SDS scale is a useful tool to expect the burden of either physical or psychological symptoms on khat chewers.

Cardó, Carles 1975. "Algebraic dependency grammar." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/463326.

Full text
Abstract:
We propose a mathematical formalism called Algebraic Dependency Grammar with applications to formal linguistics and to formal language theory. Regarding formal linguistics we aim to address the problem of grammaticality with special attention to cross-linguistic cases. In the field of formal language theory this formalism provides a new perspective allowing an algebraic classification of languages. Notably our approach suggests the existence of so-called anti-classes of languages associated to certain classes of languages. Our notion of a dependency grammar is as of a definition of a set of well-constructed dependency trees (we call this algebraic governance) and a relation which associates word-orders to dependency trees (we call this algebraic linearization). In relation to algebraic governance, we define a manifold which is a set of dependency trees satisfying an agreement condition throughout a pattern, which is the algebraic form of a collection of syntactic addresses over the dependency tree. A boolean condition on the words formalizes the notion of agreement. In relation to algebraic linearization, first we observe that the notion of projectivity is quintessentially that certain substructures of a dependency tree always form an interval in its linearization. So we have to establish well what is a substructure; we see again that patterns proportion the key, generalizing the notion of projectivity with recursive linearization procedures. Combining the above modules we have the formalism: an algebraic dependency grammar is a manifold together with a linearization. Notice that patterns sustain both manifolds and linearizations. We study their interrelation in terms of a new algebraic classification of classes of languages. We highlight the main contributions of the thesis. Regarding mathematical linguistics, algebraic dependency grammar considers trees and word-order different modules in the architecture, which allows description of languages with varied word-order. Ellipses are permitted; this issue is usually avoided because it makes some formalisms non-decidable. We differentiate linguistic phenomena structurally by their algebraic description. Algebraic dependency grammar permits observance of affinity between linguistic constructions which seem superficially different. Regarding formal language theory, a new system for understanding a very large family of languages is presented which permits observation of languages in broader contexts. We identify a new class named anti-context-free languages containing constructions structurally symmetric to context-free languages. Informally we could say that context-free languages are well-parenthesized, while anti-context-free languages are cross-serial-parenthesized. For example copy languages and respectively languages are anti-context-free.

Abstract:
This research considers social networks in informal insurance and mechanism design issues related to consumption externalities. Chapter 2 examines informal insurance networks. Defining an income-sharing arrangement as a link, I show that pairwise stable networks are regular and the degree depends on the relative value of income. Although the complete network is efficient, either high risk or high risk aversion weakens the incentive to add a link so that full risk sharing is less likely to be pairwise stable at the high level of risk. However, if the group size is large enough, the complete network is always pairwise stable regardless of the income-risk ratio. Additionally, asymmetric network structures may arise for heterogeneous agents. Chapter 3 and 4 consider consumption externalities. In Chapter 3, I develop an efficient allocation mechanism when there are consumption externalities. To implement an efficient outcome, the payment function of an incentive compatible mechanism separately reflects individual agents' valuation as well as the externalities. A seller's perspective leads Chapter 4 by comparing two prevalent selling mechanisms - English auction and posted-price selling. An English auction, of which the price is determined through buyers' competition, yields higher expected revenue under low externalities, whereas a posted-price selling, of which the price is set by the seller, is better for the seller at the high level of externalities.

Abstract:
It is common for modern engineering systems to feature dependency relationships between its components. The existence of these dependencies render the fault tree analysis (FTA) and its efficient implementation, the Binary Decision Diagram (BDD) approach, inappropriate in predicting the system failure probability. Whilst the Markov method provides an alternative means of analysis of systems of this nature, it is susceptible to state space explosion problems for large, or even moderate sized systems. Within this thesis, a process is proposed to improve the applicability of the Markov analysis. With this process, the smallest independent sections (modules) which contain each dependency type are identified in a fault tree and analysed by the most efficient method. Thus, BDD and the Markov analysis are applied in a combined way to improve the analysis efficiency. The BDD method is applied to modules which contain no dependency, and the Markov analysis applied to modules in which dependencies exist. Different types of dependency which can arise in an engineering system assessment are identified. Algorithms for establishing a Markov model have also been developed for each type of dependency. Three types of system are investigated in this thesis in the context of dependency modelling: the continuously-operating system, the active-on-demand system and the phased-mission system. Different quantification techniques have been developed for each type of system to obtain the system failure probability and other useful predictive measures. Investigation is also carried out into the use of BDD in assessing non-repairable systems involving dependencies. General processes have been established to enable the quantification.

Abstract:
In this thesis, we investigate dependency parsing for commercial application, namely for future integration in a dialogue system. To do this, we conduct several experiments on dialogue data to assess parser performance on this domain, and to improve this performance over a baseline. This work makes the following contributions: first, the creation and manual annotation of a gold-standard data set for dialogue data; second, a thorough error analysis of the data set, comparing neural network parsing to traditional parsing methods on this domain; and finally, various domain adaptation experiments show how parsing on this data set can be improved over a baseline.  We further show that dialogue data is characterized by questions in particular, and suggest a method for improving overall parsing on these constructions.

Abstract:
AbstractOver twenty years ago, Abadi et al. established the Dependency Core Calculus (DCC) as a general purpose framework for analyzing dependency in typed programming languages. Since then, dependency analysis has shown many practical benefits to language design: its results can help users and compilers enforce security constraints, eliminate dead code, among other applications. In this work, we present a Dependent Dependency Calculus (DDC), which extends this general idea to the setting of a dependently-typed language. We use this calculus to track both run-time and compile-time irrelevance, enabling faster type-checking and program execution.

Abstract:
Using daily retail prices gathered through web scraping in Mexico, we analyze if price changes can be characterized by time-dependent features, like the duration of the price spell, and/or by variables associated with the state of the economy. Through the lens of a duration model, we find evidence of both time- and state-dependency behavior. Favoring time-dependency, on the one hand, estimates indicate that price spells exhibit greater risk of ending every seven days relative to other days in between. Advocating for state-dependency, the probability of price changes seems to be affected by variations in the USD/MXN exchange rate, variations in real point of sales expenditures and the COVID-19 pandemic. Finally, leveraging data gathered via direct visits to brick-and-mortar stores, we also find time-dependency and state-dependency in the duration of price spells.
