Abstract:
The aim of this study, carried out following qualitative research techniques –semi-structured interviews to dependant people, trained and un-trained caregivers, and public, private and third-sector employees in Castilla y León– is to analyse the similarities and differences that exist among the several discursive stances regarding how care services are provided to elderly dependants in terms of their place of residence. The results show that the lack or inadequacy of formal means in rural regions give place to situations that highlight the importance of caregiving by family members to dependant elderly people. Likewise, the traditional informal system of caregiving is considered to be debilitated in rural areas due to the ageing process, migration from rural to urban areas, as well as social, family and cultural transformations that have been taking place since the latter part of the 20th century.

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to characterize dependent elderly people and their main family caregivers and the association between functional capacity of the elderly and the burden of caregivers. This cross-sectional study was conducted with 112 elderly people and caregivers connected to a primary care service in Porto Alegre, Brazil. The applied instruments related to care and socioeconomic variables were Physical and Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (PADL and IADL) and the Burden Interview. The Spearman correlation coefficient was also used. Average age of the elderly individuals in this study was 81.41 years, while the average score for PADL was 10.36 and 6.25 for IADL. Of the 112 elderly individuals, 71.4% had severe dependence. Among caregivers, 75% were women, 61.6% were the sons or daughters with an average age of 57.98 and an average burden of 29.53, which is equivalent to moderate burden. Results revealed a significant correlation between functional capacity of the elderly and caregiver burden. It was verified that the higher the dependence of elderly people, the greater the burden of caregivers.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT‘Caring’ and ‘carers’ are words in frequent use in social policy, but their meaning is often vague and undefined, encompassing a wide range of activities and relationships. This paper discusses the meaning of caring and focuses particular attention on older carers. Secondary analysis of the 1985 Office of Population, Censuses and Surveys (OPCS) Informal Carers Survey data shows that of the estimated six million informal carers in Britain, the largest contribution is made by women in their early 60s, and that elderly men are more likely than younger men to be carers. The bulk of informal caring work, in terms of total time spent, is provided by co-resident carers, most of whom are a spouse or parent of the dependant. However, the largest number of those receiving help live in separate households, and these are mainly parents or parents-in-law of their carers. The emphasis on elderly people as a ‘social burden’ neglects their contribution as providers of informal care. Over a third of informal care to people over 65 is provided by elderly people. Elderly men and women provide equal amounts of co-resident care, reflecting gender equality in the care of elderly spouses. But among younger people marked gender differences are apparent in co-resident care, and in the provision of informal care to elderly people living in separate households.

Abstract:
This article emphasizes the importance of remittances on Moldovan income and economic growth. As a result of the increase in the flow of migrants, remittances have become an important factor in the country‘s GDP (in 2017, 20.6% of GDP). According to the Household Budget Survey the income from remittances directly affects the welfare of Moldovan households. In this study, the dependency of marginalized categories of the population (families with many children, elderly people and rural population) on the remittances of Moldovan migrants is analyzed. In rural areas, remittances account for more than 20% of the average disposable income.

Abstract:
In this paper, the authors propose software architecture to monitor elderly or dependent people in their own house. Many studies have been done on hardware aspects resulting in operational products, but there is a lack of adaptive algorithms to handle all the data generated by these products due to data being distributed and heterogeneous in a large scale environment. The authors propose a multi-agent classification method to collect and to aggregate data about activity, movements, and physiological information of the monitored people. Data generated at this local level are communicated and adjusted between agents to obtain a set of patterns. This data is dynamic; the system has to store the built patterns and has to create new patterns when new data is available. Therefore, the system is adaptive and can be spread on a large scale. Generated data is used at a local level, for example to raise an alert, but also to evaluate global risks. This paper presents specification choices and the massively multi-agent architecture that was developed; an example with a sample of ten dependant people gives an illustration.

Abstract:
AbstractObjectiveto profile the trajectory of, and risk factors for, functional decline in older patients in the 30 days following Emergency Department (ED) discharge.Methodsprospective cohort study of community-dwelling patients aged ≥65 years, discharged home from a metropolitan Melbourne ED, 31 July 2012 to 30 November 2013. The primary outcome was functional decline, comprising either increased dependency in personal activities of daily living (ADL) or in skills required for living independently instrumental ADL (IADL), deterioration in cognitive function, nursing home admission or death. Univariate analyses were used to select risk factors and logistic regression models constructed to predict functional decline.Resultsat 30 days, 34.4% experienced functional decline; with 16.7% becoming more dependent in personal ADL, 17.5% more dependant in IADL and 18.4% suffering deterioration in cognitive function. Factors independently associated with decline were functional impairment prior to the visit in personal ADL (Odds Ratio [OR] 3.21, 95% confidence interval [CI] 2.26–4.53) or in IADL (OR 6.69, 95% CI 4.31–10.38). The relative odds were less for patients with moderately impaired cognition relative to those with normal cognition (OR 0.38, 95% CI 0.19–0.75). There was a 68% decline in the relative odds of functional decline for those with any impairment in IADL who used an aid for mobility (OR 0.32, 95% CI 0.14–0.7).Conclusionolder people with pre-existing ADL impairment were at high risk of functional decline in the 30 days following ED presentation. This effect was largely mitigated for those who used a mobility aid. Early intervention with functional assessments and appropriate implementation of support services and mobility aids could reduce functional decline after discharge.

Abstract:
Drug induced liver injury is one of the main factor of liver failure and acute liver damage world wide with high incidence in western countries. Liver injury can be intrinsic (dose dependant) or idiosyncratic (dose independent). However idiosyncratic type is considered to be mainly responsible for drug induced liver damage. Binding of reactive metabolites of drugs to tissue proteins and oxidative stress is the possible cellular mechanism involved in this process. Moreover, some antibiotics, anti-epileptics, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs etc are more likely to induce liver damage in high risks groups that includes females, elderly and obese people. HLA halotype and variation in protein expression also plays an important role in this context. Various studies are available regarding clinical features, histopathological features, diagnosis and management related to antibiotics and acetaminophen induced liver damage. N acetylcysteine is commonly available antidote for drug induced hepatic damage. Role of other pharmacological agents as an antidote requires further studies. However, liver transplantation should be considered with drug induced lethal liver failure

Abstract:
Population aging is a global phenomenon which has important and far-reaching implications for many facets of human life. Although it is an achievement of public health policies and socioeconomic development; it is generally greeted with alarm as it is assumed that elderly will be ill and dependant due to age-related chronic diseases which will require long term care. Despite the fact that many older adults continue to work and contribute to the society, they are seen as a burden and a drain on resources, rather than as a resource in themselves. Ageism and discrimination towards elderly is prevalent at individual and institutional levels that affect their physical and mental health, putting them at risk of depression and social isolation. According to the World Health Organization’s (WHO) combatting ageism has great potential for achieving healthy ageing for all people as they age. Individual health and longevity is influenced by biological, environmental, and psychosocial factors, however modifiable risk factors are especially relevant as they are amenable to intervention. There is enough evidence that religiosity and spirituality (R/S) are among such factors which allow older adults to age in a more positive way. Further R/S activities are prevalent globally and elderly tend to have high rates of involvement in religious activities. Health benefits that may stem from R/S involvement could be important for the future of global health which suggests that they could be incorporated into the idea of positive ageing. Islamic perspective on old age is deeply rooted in the very texts of revelation and as such is divinely based. This review article intends to create awareness of the elderly on the ageing process, their status in the contemporary society and how by adopting positive attitude toward ageing they can enjoy better functional health, self-esteem and satisfaction in life.International Journal of Human and Health Sciences Vol. 03 No. 02 April’19. Abstract:
Acoustic event detection and analysis has been widely developed in the last few years for its valuable application in monitoring elderly or dependant people, for surveillance issues, for multimedia retrieval, or even for biodiversity metrics in natural environments. For this purpose, sound source identification is a key issue to give a smart technological answer to all the aforementioned applications. Diverse types of sounds and variate environments, together with a number of challenges in terms of application, widen the choice of artificial intelligence algorithm proposal. This paper presents a comparative study on combining several feature extraction algorithms (Mel Frequency Cepstrum Coefficients (MFCC), Gammatone Cepstrum Coefficients (GTCC), and Narrow Band (NB)) with a group of machine learning algorithms (k-Nearest Neighbor (kNN), Neural Networks (NN), and Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM)), tested over five different acoustic environments. This work has the goal of detailing a best practice method and evaluate the reliability of this general-purpose algorithm for all the classes. Preliminary results show that most of the combinations of feature extraction and machine learning present acceptable results in most of the described corpora. Nevertheless, there is a combination that outperforms the others: the use of GTCC together with kNN, and its results are further analyzed for all the corpora.

Abstract:
AbstractIn elderly people, anemia occurs with increasing frequency with each advancing decade and can be a harbinger of very serious health conditions, including gastrointestinal bleeding, gastric and duodenal ulcers, and cancer. Therefore, age-dependant changes in hematological parameters deserve special attention. Nonetheless, very few longitudinal studies of aging have focused on possible associations between basic anthropometric characteristics and hematological parameters in older people. Here, we present some evidence that body size can be associated with red blood cell count as well as some other selected hematological parameters in adults aged 45 to 70 years. Longitudinal data on anthropometric and hematological parameters have been obtained from physically healthy residents at the Regional Psychiatric Hospital for People with Mental Disorders in Cibórz, Lubuskie Province, Poland (142 individuals, including 68 men and 74 women). The residents who took psychoactive drugs were excluded from the study. To evaluate the studied relationships, three anthropometric traits were used and three dichotomous divisions of the study sample were made. The medians of body height, body weight, and body mass index at the age of 45 years were used to divide the sample into: shorter and taller, lighter and heavier, and slimmer and stouter individuals, respectively. Student’s t-test, Pearson’s correlation, and regression analysis were employed. The results of the present study suggest that the relationship between body size and red blood cell count is slightly more pronounced in men and its strength depends on age. However, the correlations between body size and red blood cell count proved to be weak in both sexes. With aging, the strength of the relation decreased gradually, which might have been caused by the aging-associated changes in the hematopoietic system, anemia, or was an artifact. Further studies are needed to elucidate the unclear association between body size and hematological parameters in older adults.

Abstract:
There are 901 million people aged 60 years or over, comprising 12% of the world's population (Department of Economic and Social Affairs, 2015). The Morbidity rate in the elderly in 2015 was 28.62%, which means that for every 100 elderly people, 28 people are sick (Kemenkes RI, 2017). The utilization of health services in the elderly Posyandu is still far from the expected target. (Aprilia, 2019): out of 105 elderly, 65.7% do not regularly go to Posyandu in Pekanbaru. The data on elderly visits to the Banjar WangayaKaja elderly posyandu in the last three months were 41 elderly (29.31%). This study aims to analyze the obedience factor of the elderly in the utilization of posyandu services for the elderly.A cross-sectional study was conducted in Banjar WangayaKaja, Denpasar Utara in October-November 2019. The sample was 99 elderly with non-probability sampling technique, namely purposive sampling. Elderly who changed residence, were sick / hospitalized and totally dependent were not sampled. Demographic data, the distance from the elderly's house to the elderly posyandu and the knowledge of the elderly were obtained by distributing questionnaires, the attendance of the elderly was obtained based on attendance in the past one year. Multivariate analysis with logistic regression was carried out to obtain POR.There was a relationship between POR age = 0.17 (95% CI: 0.03-0.94), education POR = 2.71 (95% CI: 1.23-6.01) and the role of cadres POR = 59 , 64 (95% CI: 9,18-387,41) with elderly compliance in the utilization of posyandu services for the elderly. Factors that were not statistically found to be associated were gender (p-value: 0.552), occupation (p-value: 0.490), location distance to elderly posyandu (p-value: 0.009) and knowledge (p-value: 0.894). Cadres further enhance their roles, such as conducting home visits, as motivators as an effort to improve posyandu services for the elderly.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The proportion of elderly people is growing faster than any other age group. Amongst them, the group of oldest old is indeed the segment of the elderly population with the fastest growth rate. The increase in the proportion of elderly in the Angolan population makes research on this area badly needed. Within the theoretical framework of successful aging, the study aims to test for sociodemographic group differences in perceived health, life satisfaction, and social relations in Angolan elderly. The dependent variables are three of the components of what has been called successful aging. Data came from a cross-sectional survey of elderly people living in Luanda. 1003 Angolan elderly were surveyed on sociodemographic information, perceived health, life satisfaction, and social support. MANOVAs were calculated to test for mean differences in the dependent variables. Results permit to conclude that the factors associated with the largest differences on the Angolan elderly’s quality of life and social relations were age (becoming oldest old) and institutionalization. The interactions of several factors with age pointed out that the oldest old were clearly a group in which the decreased quality of life due to becoming oldest old could not be compensated by other factors, as it was the case in the group of young old.

Abstract:
As people grow older, their functional losses become more and more evident. The elderly will progressively stop performing basic activities of life, thereby decreasing his/her functional capacity - measured in terms of his/her independence and ability to perform certain daily activities. Objective: To assess the functional capacity of elderly people attending the Family Health Program (“Programa Saúde da Família”) in the neighborhood of Viveiros, Feira de Santana, Bahia. Method: This study is a cross-sectional research with a quantitative approach. The sample consisted of 34 male and female patients, aged 75. We conducted home visits to each of these elderly persons in order to apply three types of test: the Barthel Index, the Lawton Index and the Mini Mental State Examination. Results: The results show that 54.5% of these elders were found to be independent according to the Barthel Index, 51.5% were totally dependent according to the Lowton Index and 87.9% have some type of cognitive impairment according to the Mini Mental State Examination. Conclusion: Professionals working in the Family Health Program have to pay attention to the health status of the elderly, developing their care plan in accordance with the elderly’s actual needs. We hope that the interest of other researchers about the proposed topic will be raised, in order to increase the availability of research (currently scarce) in this area of knowledge, so that the elderly will receive more adequate attention and counseling, by expanding the range of services and programs available to them.

Abstract:
Austrian society is an ageing society. Old age does not always mean dependence. However, the risk of disability and dependence increases with age. In addition, older people often experience multi-disease. High-quality long-term care services can help frail and dependent elderly on maintaining greater autonomy and participation in society, regardless of their condition. The aim of the article is to analyze legal, institutional and practical solutions in the field of long-term care system functioning in Austria. It should be emphasized that Austria is striving to develop services based on a social model and an independent life paradigm. Analysis of legal solutions indicates that the long-term care system in Austria is very complex. Institutional solutions are divided between the federal level and nine federal states. On the one hand, this results in decentralization and more effective help for the elderly, but on the other hand, it causes the diffusion and heterogeneity of standards.

Abstract:
Objective : We aim to explore the impact of social participation activities on the relationship between depression and age perception in the elderly. Methods : This study used data from the 2020 Survey on the Status of the Elderly, and a total of 10,097 people responded to the survey by sampling the survey districts and the number of households. The dependent variable was the perception of the elderly's age, the independent variable was the depression score, and the control variable was social participation. Statistical analysis was performed through regression analysis. Considering that the independent variable in this study was a continuous variable and the control variable was a categorical variable, an interaction term was entered into the regression equation for analysis. Results : As a result of the analysis, social activity participation and depression were statistically significant (F(3, 10093)=1308.39, p<.001), and the explanatory power of the model was approximately 28% (adjusted R²=0.28). When the interaction term was added, the explanatory power increased by 0.5%, and the increase in explanatory power was statistically significant (F(2,10094)=1914.99, p<.001). In addition, the effect of participation in social activities lowers the perception of the elderly's age. The more depressed one is, the higher the perception of the elderly's age, but participation in social activities has a positive effect on lowering the perception of the elderly's age (b=-0.14). Conclusion : Participation in social activities plays an important role in lowering depression and age awareness among the elderly and strengthening the positive social self of the elderly. Based on the research results, this study needs to emphasize the importance of policies and programs that encourage and support participation in social activities in old age, and support positive age perception among older people at the personal and social levels. It is expected that these results can be used as basic data to emphasize the importance of social activity participation projects for the elderly and to change the age standards for the elderly.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTThe paper focuses on the provision of instrumental support provided to dependent elderly people in France, presenting information collected in social surveys conducted in three regions of the country. This information is considered in the light of the results of studies from other countries on instrumental social support to the dependent elderly which are reviewed. The data analysed included measures of the potential social network of the respondent based on household composition, marital status, number of living children and frequency of visits by family, friends and neighbours. Measures of instrumental support received were based on reported need for help for specific tasks, and the main source of help provided. The results reported here suggest that not all members of the dependent elderly person's social network were equally involved in providing instrumental help and supports a hierarchical model of the informal care structure with family members as the predominant source of help. The results also demonstrate the comparatively small role played by the formal caring services compared with the informal sector. The context of care for dependent elderly people in France is discussed and the implications of these results for social policy are considered.

Abstract:
Physical activity is one of the most important efforts to maintain and improve health. In achieving the needs of daily activities, every elderly can do exercise habits. Someone with low physical activity habits (sedentary) has a higher risk of experiencing health problems. The purpose of this study was to describe the level of exercise habits and intensity of exercise in the elderly. The research method uses a quantitative approach with a survey type that aims to investigate whether there is a relationship between the independent variable and the dependent variable. The population of the research sample is the elderly at Panti Wredha Rindang Asih, a sample of 28 people with purposive sampling technique consisting of 16 men and 12 women. Data were collected by filling out questionnaires and measuring resting pulse in the morning and measuring exercise pulse after participating in physical training (gymnastics). The results of the study of exercise habits showed 19 elderly people (67.87%) were in the good category. The results of the measurement of resting pulse showed that 28 elderly people (100%) were in the normal category (60-100x/minute). The results of the exercise pulse measurement showed that 21 people (75%) were in the normal category, there was an increase in the elderly's pulse rate of 24% with an average pulse rate (98.6x/minute). The conclusion of this study is that the level of exercise habits in the elderly is in the good category, while the intensity level of exercise in the elderly is in the medium category. There is no relationship between exercise habits and exercise rate in the elderly at Panti Wredha Rindang Asih. Suggestions for the elderly to always maintain exercise habits by getting used to a healthy life and regular exercise.

Abstract:
Based on a sample of 487 rural elderly people from five counties (cities and districts) in Chengdu City, this paper investigates the main demand drivers affecting rural home-based elderly care service consumption willingness based on structural equation modelling. The results of the study show that (1) the overall satisfaction level of the demand for rural home-based elderly care services in Chengdu is 40%, with insufficient service relevance and low cost-effectiveness; at the same time, the service functions of the basic facilities for the elderly are not sufficiently fulfilled, and the resources are not effectively utilised. (2) The willingness to participate in home care services in rural Chengdu is mainly driven by spiritual and cultural, medical and health care and other demand factors. (3) Life care has a positive effect on rural elderly's participation in home care to a certain extent, but it is not significant. Safety and security indirectly affect rural elderly's willingness to age in place by influencing medical and health care. Therefore, the government, enterprises, communities, and families should work together in an orderly and coordinated manner to form a family-centred, community-based, and professional service-dependent socialised service for the rural elderly living at home, with the main content of solving daily life difficulties, and supplemented by spiritual and cultural services, in order to guard the rural elderly in their later years of happiness.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Nostalgia and sentimentality are very typical for the old age. There are some characteristics that are perceived as typical for the elderly people in the different cultures, such as being dependent, and needing long-term care. There are also some similarities between the population tendencies in Bulgaria and Romania. The simultaneously acceptance in European Union of both countries also suggests the existence of some similar attitudes towards the past among elderly minority people in both countries. The hypothesis of the study was that together with some similarities, the elderly people from both ethnic minorities in the two countries would differ cross-culturally in their sentimentality and nostalgia related to the past. Sentimentality and nostalgia in elderly minority people (26 Roma people in Bulgaria and 21 Hungarians in Romania) were measured by means of a questionnaire created by Gergov & Stoyanova (2013). The results indicated that the Hungarian minority in Romania was more sentimental and nostalgic than the Roma minority in Bulgaria. More thoughts about the past reported the minority young elders than the minority oldest old. The females from the minority groups were more sentimental than the males from the minority groups. Higher sentimentality and nostalgia among elderly Hungarians could be explained by their higher conservatism and more satisfaction with the hystorical past than Roma people. Roma people living in institutions felt a sense of stability in their present and they shared some positive expectations for the future.

Abstract:
IntroductionAssessing and quantifying the experience of pain in elderly with cognitive impairment is particularly challenging and important.ObjectivesTo describe the overall profile and to identify the prevalence and characteristics of pain among demented elderly.MethodsA descriptive study including 60 institutionalised elderly aged 65 and older in the retirement home, Sfax, Tunisia. Data collection was conducted using questionnaire exploring socio-demographic and medical data. Mini-mental state examination (MMSE) and Katz index of independence in activities of daily living (ADL) were used to assess respectively mental status and dependence for ADL. Verbal Descriptor Scale (VDS) and elderly behavioural scale (ECPA) were used to evaluate pain. Thirty-two elderly were included and the inclusion criteria were: Age ≥ 65 and MMSE score ≤ 20.ResultsThe average age of cognitively impaired residents was 74.2 years with a slight male predominance (57%). They were mostly illiterate (83%) and 56.3% of subjects were single. Almost two-thirds were admitted voluntarily and the average length of stay was 4.8 days. The ADL scale has shown that 65.6% were dependent. According to the VDS, the majority of demented subjects (93.8%) did not feel and express pain, 3% of residents with dementia had mild pain, 2.2% had moderate pain and 1.1% had severe pain. Whereas, the hetero evaluation (ECPA) concluded that 72% of demented elderly actually had pain with severe pain in 18.8% of cases.ConclusionPain in elderly persons with dementia is a significant problem. This underlines high needs of research as well as excellent implementation concepts for assessment and treatment of pain.Disclosure of interest. The authors have not supplied their declaration of competing interest.

Abstract:
The situation of elderly people is an increasingly pressing global concern. This issue is especially challenging for developing countries, where, traditionally, the majority of the elderly people have lived with their family and have been dependent on family support. Nowadays, however, appropriate family support is no longer guaranteed. An assessment tool for measuring active family support would be useful for describing the real living situation of the elderly. The purpose of this study was to develop an active family support scale for elderly people in Bangladesh. This study’s participants were 20 elderly people (aged from 65 to 75 years) who were asked about the support they perceived that they receive from their families. The proposed instrument was found to be a reliable family support scale for Bangladeshi elderly with an internal consistency reliability level of 0.94 (Cronbach’s Alpha Coefficient). The study’s findings are considered transferable to other developing countries. The scale can be used to assess elderly people’s perceived family support in Bangladesh and other developing countries and can support initiatives to improve family support.

Abstract:
We present a study of the negative aspects of the emotional sphere in elderly man: depression and loneliness. Empirical research was carried out in Moscow and Grozny involving elderly people living in families and in geriatric centers (201 subjects), as well as with middle-aged people (132 subjects). We used the following methods: Zung differential diagnosis of depressive states inventory in adaptation by T.I. Balachova and D. Russell and M. Ferguson Loneliness scale (UKL) in adaptation by N.E. Vodopyanova. It is shown that at the present stage of development of society, middle-aged people already have quite high level of depression and pronounced sense of loneliness. We confirmed the hypothesis that the preservation of the negative aspects of the emotional sphere in elderly people is less dependent on the conditions of life at the micro level (family or gerontology center) and more dependent from the living conditions at the macro level (socio-economic situation in the region). In Grozny, a city of more complex socio-economic situation, negative emotional states are more pronounced than in Moscow.

Abstract:
Increases in the population's average age require government services to offer high-efficiency, low-cost services aimed at the elderly. An extended technology acceptance model (ETAM) embedded in a contextualized perspective is proposed to analyze elderly users' mobile government behavioral intentions. In this study, a questionnaire survey was conducted on 800 participants aged 60 and over to identify crucial influencing factors. One dependent variable, three independent variables, four intervening variables, and four control variables were used for the questionnaire design. The proposed model was tested based on structural equation modeling (SEM) under eight constructs. The empirical results showed that elderly users' attitudes, perceived external support, orientation level, and perceived ease-of-use have a significant positive impact on elderly users' acceptance of mobile government, while perceived risk has a relatively negative impact. Among these factors, both users' attitudes and perceived external support exhibit the strongest effect on behavioral intention.

Abstract:
Background: Understanding the experiences of general practice (GP) residents caring for dependent elderly people during the first lockdown as part of the countries COVID-19 pandemic strategy. The aim was to explore themes that could explain the gap between the missions and values at the heart of GP practice during this period of strict isolation. Method: Qualitative study using an iterative approach. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 13 GP residents using a pre-established interview guide. Audio recordings were transcribed verbatim. Data were analyzed according to a coding grid, developed using Nvivo software (NVivo Qualitative Data Analysis Software; QSR International Pty Ltd. Version Release 1.5.1 (940) 2021), to identify emerging themes. Results: Three themes emerged from this qualitative research: cognitive dissonance, psychosocial risks, and fear. General practice residents have lived in the paradox between care and deprivation of liberty of dependent elderly people. Conclusion: The results suggest that the GP residents experienced a form of work-related suffering in this situation of deprivation of liberty of dependent elderly people. The present research serves as a pilot study to explore how GP residents experienced their care of locked-up dependent elderly people.

Abstract:
The level of functional dependency of elderly is increasing day by day. The old care homes have been markedly increased in recent years in Bangladesh. The purpose of the study was to identify the level of functional dependency and independency among activities of daily living for the elderly people of old care homes in Bangladesh. A cross sectional study was conducted with a structured and close ended interviewer administered questionnaire to collect information from 144 elderly people of five old care homes through convenient sampling technique. The results showed that, 38 participants were fully functional (score 6), 56 participants had score 4 and they had moderate impairment, 40 participants score was 2 or less which indicated severe functional impairment and 10 participants were totally dependent (score 0). The study also revealed that 58% of the elderly people in the age group 60-65 years were independent and 70% of the elderly people belonging to age group >70 were totally dependent. However, it has been evident that percentage of independency decreases with the increase of age. It was also found that respondents‘ at the age of 65 years and above were functionally dependent. This study also recommends for occupational therapy service in old care home.Bang J Psychiatry Dec 2014; 28(2): 62-66

Abstract:
Descriptive study aiming to understand the family dynamics of elderly people aged 80 years or older, receiving family care at home. Caregivers and elderly, registered at the family health unit of Greater Porto, comprised a sample of 107 pairs. Data were collected between 09/2009 and 03/2010. The following instruments were applied: family APGAR, quality of life and lifestyle scale. The results that stand out are: increase in male partners serving as caregivers for dependent partners; substantial inclusion in the list of family caregivers: grandchildren, nieces, nephews, siblings. The caregiver lifestyle was considered regular, as well as the caregiver and elderly’s quality of life, although the family dynamics showed to work well. Limitations prevent further generalizations, but offer relevant support for the development of the family health and family nursing program.

Abstract:
Proprioceptive input may greatly affect postural stability. However, the proprioceptive postural strategy in elderly, middle-aged, and young people has not been investigated sufficiently. Hence, in this study, we aimed to investigate differences in proprioceptive postural strategies of elderly, middle-aged, and young people. The center of pressure displacement was determined in 23 elderly, 23 middle-aged, and 23 young people during upright stance on a balance board with their eyes closed. Vibratory stimulations at 30, 60, and 240 Hz were applied to the lumbar multifidus (LM) and gastrocnemius (GS) muscles to evaluate the contributions of different proprioceptive signals used in balance control. Compared with middle-aged and young people, elderly people showed a high dependence on postural control of the GS at 30 Hz (p-values: Young and elderly: 0.033; middle-aged and elderly: 0.001). Moreover, compared with young people, elderly people were more dependent on postural control of the LM at 240 Hz (p = 0.016). There were no significant differences with respect to the GS at 60 and 240 Hz, and with respect to the LM at 30 and 60 Hz between the elderly, young, and middle-aged people. Thus, the postural control strategy of elderly people depends on the GS at 30 Hz.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTUsing data from the 1980 General Household Survey, differences in the provision of statutory domiciliary services to disabled elderly people are explored. Domiciliary services vary in their degree of ‘substitutability’, that is, in the extent to which the care may be performed either by state services or by other members of the elderly person's household. Domestic support services are substitutable by any available carer; personal health and hygiene services are partially substitutable depending on the relationship between the carer and the cared for; and medical services are not substitutable by informal carers. The paper shows that discrimination by statutory services against women carers is dependent primarily on the household composition of the elderly person rather than on gender per se. Taking into account the level of disability of the elderly person, younger ‘single’ women carers receive no less support than ‘single’ men carers, but carers who are married women under 65 obtain the least domestic and personal health care support. Carers who are elderly receive more support than carers under 65. Among disabled elderly people who live alone, men receive somewhat more domestic and personal health services than women.

Abstract:
The physical environment has a great potential for supporting resident's residual way-finding abilities. Until now little systematic research has been carried out to identify supportive architectural characteristics. The architectural structure of the buildings and the impact of the different architectural characteristics was also analyzed. Results show that people with advancing dementia are increasingly dependent on a compensating environment. Our experience in design of contemporary homes and its environment for elderly persons is an example how the young generation can remain an integral part of the elderly peoples lives. Any Cooperation between Serbia and Germany is to be in accordance with European Standards and Norms.

Abstract:
Introduction: Population ageing is a worldwide reality that requires attention, and a concern for healthy and functional ageing is increasingly the focus of government policies and programmes. Objective: To identify the prevalence of homebound elderly people, and the influence of sociodemographic and economic characteristics on their functional dependency. Methods: Cross-sectional study with 178 homebound elderly people assisted by a family healthcare unit in Vitória, ES, Brazil. Functional independence was measured by the Functional Independence Measure (FIM) and the sociodemographic and economic variables were collected by a questionnaire developed by the authors. Binary logistic regression was used to determine the influence of the sociodemographic and economic characteristics on the risk of being functionally dependent. Results: Forty-eight percent of the participants were functional dependents, 80% were female, 72% belonged to the fourth age, 74% were white, 63% were widowed, 78% had retired, 90% had children, 83% had a caregiver, 52% had low education and 40% had low income. Logistic regression indicated that having a caregiver increased by 40 times the chance of being functionally dependent (OR = 40.2; 95%CI 4.8–355.4) and having between one to eight years of education decreased the chance of functional dependency (OR = 0.2; 95%CI 0.04-0.9).Conclusions: The prevalence of functional dependency was very high in this sample, and since the presence of a caregiver was the strongest and significant predictor of functional dependency, we suggest that guidance and support should be offered to caregivers, followed by a family healthcare strategy, to make consistent efforts with the objective of improving functional recovery and independence of homebound elderly.

Abstract:
Background: Globally, more than 300 million people of all ages suffer from depression. With an ageing population, depression among the elderly is likely to increase in the coming years, with higher prevalence among the elderly people than that in the general adult population. This study was intended to know the prevalence of depression and factors associated with depression among elderly people. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in the urban field practice area of Navodaya Medical College, Raichur. A pre-designed and pre-tested questionnaire was used to interview the elderly person, after taking verbal consent. Depression was assessed using geriatric depression scale (short version). The study duration was from 1st September 2018 – 31st December, 2018 with 360 sample size. Results: Out of 360 elderly people, the prevalence of depression was found to be 31.4 %. The prevalence of depression was more in females 31.9% (63 out of 197). Significant association of depression was noted with age, socio-economic status, marital status, type of family, education and occupation with p<0.05.Conclusions: Around 1/3rd of the study participants were found to be suffering from depression. Depression was significantly associated with age, illiteracy, nuclear family, dependent on family members. Family support to the elderly population may prevent depression.

Abstract:
Kata Kunci : kemandirian, lansia &activities daily living ABSTRACTThe increase in people’s life expectancy may result to the rise in elderly people population from year to year. The rise number in elderly people will lead to various health problems such as the increase of degenerative diseases and cancer that affect the decline in elderly people’s productivity. The decrease in elderly people’s productivity is caused by the reduction in function so that it will lead to the decrease in elderly people’s independence level in following daily activities. The purpose of this research is to identify elderly people’s independence level in fulfilling activities of daily living. The current research employed descriptive quantitative, which also applied total sampling as the technique to collect data. The samples were 21 elderly people (aged 60 – 69 years old) in Senjarawi Social Residential. Barthel index was utilized as the research instrument, while frequency distribution was also employed to analyze the research data. The research result on elderly people’s independence level (aged 60–69 years old) in fulfilling activities daily living revealed that most of elderly people, 15 persons (72%), were considered to be partially dependent, 3 persons (14 %) were categorized as independent, while the other 3 persons (14%) were considered as fully dependent. Based on the findings. That most of elderly people in Senjarawi Social Residential are considered as partially dependent. Suggests that healthcare programs for elderly people should be developed in order to improve elderly people’s independence. Keywords: independence, elderly people & activities daily living
