Meyer, Irvine Alfred Caleb. "The life and cost of inkjet prints compared with traditional photographic processes." Thesis, Peninsula Technikon, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.11838/1318.

Abstract:
A DISSERTATION PRESENTED TO THE HIGHER DEGREES COMMITTEE OF PENINSULA TECHNIKON IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE MASTER OF TECHNOLOGY: GRAPHIC DESIGN, 2004
Inkjet printers have evolved in recent years to the extent that many are capable of making prints of a quality closely approximating traditional colour photographs. These printers cost a fraction of the capital outlay needed to equip a traditional colour darkroom and have brought high quality colour printing within the reach of a broad spectrum of users. As they are capable of printing on a wide range of materials and print surfaces prints from inkjet printers are also in demand by fine artists and art collectors. Commercial printmakers, artists, photographers, and amateurs printing in their homes or offices use these printers. The convenience, ease, and quality of inkjet printing have made it a popular additional and alternative photographic printing technique. However, manufacturers seldom publish data regarding the expected life of the printer output. With traditional colour photographs end users expect some fading to take place with time and can normally have another print made from the original negative. Digital images rely on storage on compact disk or computer hard drive with potential long-term retrieval problems, and it is vital that important images be output in print form on the most stable materials. This study arose from the author’s concern about the archival qualities of photographs in general. In order to enable end users to make more informed choices about the most suitable printing medium, this study explored two aspects concerning traditional photographs and inkjet prints, namely cost and image permanence. The comparative costs were found by means of a questionnaire survey conducted among a representative sample of printmakers. The limits of image permanence were determined by subjecting sample prints to a high-intensity light source to accelerate the process of image fading over time to the point where the print becomes unacceptable. The investigation showed that inkjet prints are more expensive than traditional photographs, and that inkjet prints made with pigment inks can last twice as long as traditional photographs. Different inkjet papers were found to have no significant effect on the life of the print during the period of this test. Inkjet prints made with dyes were shown to have a short life before fading unacceptably. The study led to the recommendation that for the longest print life a print to be displayed should be printed on an inkjet paper with pigment inks.

Sayer, James R. "The perception of moderate and large color differences in photographic prints: an evaluation of five color-difference equations." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/45336.

Full text
Abstract:
The task of determining which of many available color-difference formulae is appropriate for any give application can be arduous. Researchers and practitioners alike are faced with the selection of one formula which best describes perceived color differences under conditions in which the equation is to be employed. The idea that one equation can be formulated which takes into consideration all factors affecting perceived color difference has yet to be realized, and perhaps never will. As a result, an “every man for himself” approach has developed. Yet, color-difference equations are continually being applied to conditions without empirical evidence to support their use. While the 1976 CIELAB Color Difference Equation has been applied for some time in the photographic industry, its use in describing the perceived magnitude of large color differences in photographic prints has not been validated. Furthermore, a good deal of research has suggested that the CIELAB equation is not applicable under numerous conditions of color-difference assessment. Nonetheless, the results of the study reported here support the use of CIELAB over four other formulae (CIELUV, CMC (1:1), Richter, and Yu’v’) for describing perceived color differences in photographic prints. CIELAB produced moderate correlations for both experienced and non-experienced color judges over the range of color space examined. The results of this work support the use of the 1976 CIELAB Color Difference Equation for describing the perceived magnitude of moderate and large color differences in photographic prints.

Abstract:
We have introduced a geometry which is invariant to certain forms of burning and dodging photographic prints. We then used this geometry to create invariant measurements which represent information which would not change given different photographic printing processes.
The presented algorithm used properties of best-fit planes to represent a photograph. There are many other possibilities for measurements which would fit this framework. Further, the representation of photographs presented in this thesis could be combined with existing computer vision algorithms for such tasks as object recognition within photographs for which we do not know the development process.

Allan, Christopher. "An analysis of digital photojournalistic practices: a study of the Sowetan's photographic department." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1003071.

Abstract:
Photojournalism in South Africa is in the process of undergoing a shift from an analogue past to a fully digital future. This shift to digital has already been completed by many of the newspapers in the United States of America and Europe, and the new technology is seen to have made fundamental differences in the way that journalists do their job. This thesis attempts to explore the differences brought about, as well as the problems experienced by the photographic department at the Sowetan newspaper as a result of the shift to digital. How the development of technology has affected the photojournalist throughout is focused upon in a brief history of photojournalism and examples of how technology has shaped different aspects of journalism in both a positive and negative manner is considered. Exactly what digital photography is, how it has been integrated into American Photographic departments and the changes that the new technology has prompted are also explained. The manipulation of images in the past as well as the relative ease of digital manipulation are covered and concerns are raised about the future implications of digital manipulation. By conductlng participant observation and holding interviews, research data was compiled which allowed conclusions to be drawn about the impact that the shift to digital had had on the Sowetan photographic department. Intentional and unintentional consequences were expected and revealed in the research. The job of the photojournalist and photographic editor was found to have changed but perhaps not as dramatically as expected. Third world factors such as crime, poverty and lack of education were discovered to have resulted in problems that differed noticeably from those experienced by American and European photographic departments. Some expected difficulties were not experienced at all, while other major obstacles, specifically the repairs that must constantly be made to the digital cameras, continue to hamper the operations of the new digital department. Some understanding of the problems that might be encountered by future photojournalism departments that are considering making the shift to digital are arrived at, in the hope that they may be foreseen and overcome.

Abstract:
In 1940 the Museum of Modern Art, New York, (MoMA) became the first major American art museum to establish a curatorial department dedicated exclusively to photography. From the perspective of the photographers, curators, and critics who had sought institutional legitimacy for the medium, the founding of the Department of Photographs was a watershed event, marking the moment when photography finally came to be recognized as a museum subject equal to painting and sculpture. Although the department has since had a pervasive influence on the field and the history of photography, surprisingly little scholarship has addressed its contentious formation. This dissertation seeks to fill this significant gap in the literature by examining the department's inception and the six years Beaumont Newhall served as its curator.Of particular concern are the ideological battles waged over how photography would be presented at MoMA by Newhall, his wife Nancy--who served as acting curator when her husband enlisted in the army during World War II--and the department's co-founder and key advisor, Ansel Adams. As acolytes of the photographer and gallerist Alfred Stieglitz, who himself had long fought for the recognition of photography as a medium of art, the Newhalls and Adams took aesthetic quality as their guiding metric, asserting that in order to raise the profile of photographers, educate the public, and improve standards of taste, the museum should show only the very best work ever created--the "heavy cream" of photographic production. Their vision for photography at the museum was counterbalanced by that of the photographer Edward Steichen and many prominent writers and critics, who argued that MoMA should treat photography as a broad-ranging cultural phenomenon and means of communication, rather than merely as a medium of self expression. The debate between these two camps illustrates the considerable philosophical, interpretive, and museological challenges raised by photography's introduction into the museum, issues that remain as contentious as ever.

Abstract:
The number of patients with the disease diabetes expects to increase, which means that even a larger number of patients will need to be screened to detect diabetic retinopathy. The purpose of this study was to describe the experiences of screening for diabetes retinopathy at an ophtalmology department. The pilotstudy was developed by a qualitative inductive approach and data were collected through semi-structured interviews. The material was processed by qualitative content analysis. The main categories that emerged were: security, the importance of information, the importance of accessibility, concerns about the result and its consequences and uncomfortable and time-consuming. The result showed that screening for diabetes retinopathy was important for the informants. It was a security to check their eyes to detect complications in time. It was revealed that they felt a concern for complications due to diabetic retinopathy and what effect this would have on their lives. The informants wanted to get a clearer result of the examination and that the availability would improve. Further nursing research about information, knowledge and increased availability in screening for diabetes retinopathy is needed. Such research would be helpful to improve care patients with diabetes, and to find strategies for reaching out to those who fail to attend screening for diabetes retinopathy.

Abstract:
This thesis is an enquiry into the conditions in which various understandings of the newly introduced but vaguely grasped Western notion of ‘art’ emerged and sustained themselves in the name of cultural reproduction in early twentieth-century China. This Western concept of art was translated into Chinese as ‘meishu’, a neologism originally coined in Japanese kanji, and regarded as the embodiment of the ‘national essence’. Through a close examination of five art-related publishing events—the publication of the nationalistic journal Guocui xuebao; the launch of the art periodical Shenzhou guoguangji; the endeavours to compile a book collection on art, Meishu congshu; the making of the text Zhonguo yishujia zhenglüe which claimed to be a history book of Chinese ‘meishu’; and an example of image appropriation from Stephen Bushell’s Chinese Art—this thesis explores the ways in which different ‘neologistic imaginations’ of the term ‘meishu’ were constructed through publishing practices attempting to preserve and reproduce the ‘national essence’, by creating from the existent tradition a category of ‘art’ equivalent to that in the European West. Unlike previous scholarship, which deems any understanding of ‘meishu’ that deviated from the ‘authentic’ European model a ‘misconception’, this thesis sees these disparate understandings of ‘meishu’ as equally valid statements competing for dominance in the discursive field of art. This thesis thus argues that there existed at least three modes of utterances regarding the notion of ‘meishu’ in early twentieth-century China, and that the success of any such given utterance depended upon the acceptance of the authentic quality argued in its strategy of cultural reproduction. This thesis hence not only offers a detailed analysis of each publishing event, but also provides an interpretative framework within which the recognition of these utterances can be analysed by their strategic approaches to claiming cultural authenticity.

Abstract:
The ONE Exhibition explores an era in American history marked by intense government sponsored anti-gay persecution and the genesis of the LGBT equality movement. The study begins during World War II, continues through the McCarthy era and the founding of the nation’s first gay magazine, and ends in 1958 with the first gay Supreme Court case in U.S. history. Central to the story is ONE The Homosexual Magazine, and its founders, as they embarked on a quest for LGBT equality by establishing the first ongoing nationwide forum for gay people in the U.S., and challenged the government’s right to engage in and encourage hateful and discriminatory practices against the LGBT community. Then, when the magazine was banned by the Post Office, the editors and staff took the federal government to court. As such, ONE, Incorporated v. Olesen became the first Supreme Court case in U.S. history that featured the taboo subject of homosexuality, and secured the 1st Amendment right to freedom of speech for the gay press. Thus, ONE magazine and its founders were an integral part of a small group of activists who established the foundations of the modern LGBT equality movement.

The small traditional printing companies are now facing the turning point of transformation due to a number of factors such as the rising of co- printing business, maturity of electronic broadcasting carriers, trends of e-printing in publishing business and the opening-up of printing business as part of the Cross-Strait Agreement on Trade in Services. For business owners, it is inevitable to establish a digital printing department by introducing small-volume production of a wide range of different items as the mainstream of production for traditional printing. A questionnaire survey was conducted for this study to identify the current needs and business status of local printing businesses that have introduced digital printing. 4 dimensions, “industrial environment,” “internal corporate organization,” “innovative perception and characteristics” and “mentality of management level,” were selected for sample data analysis, thus identifying the factors of decision making and establishing the prototypical structure for innovative business model. The following four conclusions were reached: 1. The business status and difficulties of running business were identified for traditional small printing businesses that have introduced digital printing process, and from here the business status of small businesses in Taiwan was learned; 2. For the business running needs and niche factors of digital printing department, the internal and external conditions required for business running were answered here after the introduction of digital printing department; 3. A prototypical structure of innovative model was identified for the application in digital printing business model. The innovative business structure developed in this study is an third-party, independent platform that is made available for all local printing businesses in Taiwan as the exclusive digital communication platform between business owners and consumers; and 4. For the applications of this innovative model of digital printing, consumers can search for the service that they need and is provided by local printing companies through cell phones or Internet, and local businesses can use the resourced provided by this interface to improve the weak spots in providing their service. In addition, this model can be used to make local printing businesses the “last mile” in the printing business channel. By helping traditional printing businesses face the changes in internal and external environments using local service, the effective establishment of digital printing department can be used to run a better business and deal with upcoming challenges. It is possible to point out where the transformation is going and where possible opportunities may be. Hopefully the results are helpful for business owners and the government agencies involved for implementation and improvement of their competitiveness. The research is a case study of United Daily News Printing Department, using mainly participant-observant, depth interview, and questionnaire methodologies. According to the findings, CIP-3 printing production process has been adopted internationally; this will make news printing process more computerized. And this change is not limited to the pre-printing operation, through the flow of digitalized information, production changes occur. Computerized production promotes both effects and effectiveness, and at the same time diminishes the boundaries between departments. In the process, people are still the key variable. Employee management becomes a very important issue. Cross-department convergence is the trend for printing department, and will help form new enterprise culture. It is undoubtedly that, in a modern society where digital cameras are widely used, photography has penetrated into people’s daily lives. Photography skills have also been applied in all walks of life, such as media, printing industry, advertising design and art creation. However, there is no photography department established to foster professional photographers in Taiwan. For those who want to devote themselves to Fine-art photography or photography industry in Taiwan can only rely on scattered resources. On the contrary, in the neighboring countries like China, Korea and Japan, they all have photography department or photography professional schools. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the feasibility of establishing photography department in Taiwan, and it could serve as a reference for future domestic photography education. This study adopted the methods of questionnaire survey and in-depth interviews. The subject of questionnaire survey targeted at vocational school students as well as photography industry in Taiwan. Meanwhile, via interviewing experts specializing in photography on the subject of establishing photography department and reviewing the status of Taiwan’s labor market in recruiting photographers, this study explored if photography department should start its prosperity in Taiwan. In conclusion, the results of the study indicated that three experts specializing in photography took a sanguine view of establishing photography department; vocational school students had strong intentions to major in photography, yet the job vacancy rates of photographers of Taiwan’s labor market appeared to be quite low. Hence, establishing photography department is regarded as infeasible in Taiwan.

McLeay, Kate Jane. "A randomised controlled trial pilot study assessing use of clinical digital photography for specialist referral process: can its use reduce length of stay of patients with minor burns within an Emergency Department." Thesis, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2440/110385.

Abstract:
Emergency departments around Australia are facing increasing demands. Significant contributing factors for growing emergency department (ED) attendances are an aging population, increased occurrence of chronic disease and insufficient hospital, aged care and rehabilitation beds. Other factors include a lack of access to community services and low socio-economic conditions. The increasing demand on ED resources primarily because of increasing presentations increases patient length of stay and leads to overcrowding, this has a negative effect on patient outcomes and decrease in the quality of care. Despite a national focus on improving all Australian EDs, there continues to be limited interventional research that highlights successful strategies to reduce length of stay and thereby reduce overcrowding. There is a wealth of literature on the positive outcomes resulting from clinical photography being utilised within healthcare settings and in remote specialist referrals. Limited research exists on referral practices of ED practitioners and the use of clinical photography within an ED setting. By identifying the research gaps, reviewing findings and analysing current health care demands, the aim of this study was to trial an alternative referral method - clinical photography. The study was conducted by an emergency nurse practitioner candidate, who used clinical photographs of bum injuries as part of the referral process to the bums specialist. This study hoped to assist with decreasing length of stay in ED and therefore adds a plausible way to reduce overcrowding. Additionally, it piloted a study in preparation for a randomised control trial. To the researcher's knowledge, there has been no study to date trialling the effectiveness of this intervention.

Abstract:
Grow: Experiencing Nature in the Fifth Dimension, is an interdisciplinary practice-led research project traversing the realms of art, science and technology through the exploration of germinating seeds. Through my investigation of the aesthetic possibilities of the computational extension of vision with time-resolved (4D) micro-X-ray Computed Tomography, I have tested the potential for visualising virtual germinating seeds in an immersive stereoscopic installation. Using this technology I have set out to create a work of art where an audience can experience seed growth from a very different perspective. However, the rationale to propagate seeds in this way began not just to test the limitations and possibilities of this technology. As an artistic inquiry, my premise for focusing on plant life also began as a way to examine this work from an ecological perspective. By considering the third and fourth dimensional elements in this project I am proposing that an individual’s experience of nature in my work can be considered as an additional ‘fifth dimension’. My research is placed within a range of disciplines from contemporary art and new media practices to scientific technological research and the natural sciences. The works of art developed through this research have been viewed in relation to ideas of the fourth dimension in modern art, to microscopy in both historical and contemporary art practice, to contemporary installation practices, and in relation to ideas of time and wonder. My experience of meeting the Seed Morphologist Dr Wolfgang Stuppy and staying at the Millennium Seed Bank, Royal Botanic Gardens, West Sussex in the UK has also been a point of reflection. The seed becomes a visual analogy for ideas of time, growth and renewal in the context of issues of creating art in the time of the Anthropocene. This exegesis explores the multi-dimensional properties of my research in the wider context of art, science and philosophy.
