Jain, Rahul. "Community colleges as labor market intermediaries: a comparative case study of departmental activities in reducing labor market gaps." Thesis, Georgia Institute of Technology, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/37240.

Full text
Abstract:
Labor market intermediaries (LMIs) have taken on a greater role in regional labor markets as flexibility of work has increased over the past thirty years. These shifting roles necessitate a greater look at institutions that act as LMIs and the services they perform for workers and employers. Community colleges have recently been highlighted as one of the institutions serving workers that offer market molding activities, going beyond more traditional LMI market matching activities. This study compared four LMI placement and career activities - project based learning, internships and cooperative education, specialized accreditation, and industry advisement through councils - for five similar programs of study at community colleges in the City University of New York (CUNY) system to analyze the effects of these activities on employment placement. Greater utilization of these activities by community college departments was found in most cases to be beneficial for students as it regards employment placement in career fields related to the field of study. Activities that were successful in encouraging students to take part in forms of assessment of job-readiness, either through existing standardized testing of job skills or actual work experience, were found to be particularly valuable. These outcomes suggest that mature industries and occupations with established forms of assessment are more likely to provide a smooth transition from degree attainment to employment. Implications for community college administrators and funders are discussed.

Anderson, Valerie Margaret. "Assessment and optimisation of MRI measures of atrophy as potential markers of disease progression in multiple sclerosis." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2008. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/5300/.

Full text
Abstract:
There is a need for sensitive measures of disease progression in multiple sclerosis (MS) to monitor treatment effects and understand disease evolution. MRI measures of brain atrophy have been proposed for this purpose. This thesis investigates a number of measurement techniques to assess their relative ability to monitor disease progression in clinically isolated syndromes (CIS) and early relapsing remitting MS (RRMS). Presented, is work demonstrating that measurement techniques and MR acquisitions can be optimised to give small but significant improvements in measurement sensitivity and precision, which provided greater statistical power. Direct comparison of numerous techniques demonstrated significant differences between them. Atrophy measurements from SIENA and the BBSI (registration-based techniques) were significantly more precise than segmentation and subtraction of brain volumes, although larger percentage losses were observed in grey matter fraction. Ventricular enlargement (VE) gave similar statistical power and these techniques were robust and reliable; scan-rescan measurement error was <0.01% of brain volume for BBSI and SIENA and <0.04ml for VE. Annual atrophy rates (using SIENA) were -0.78% in RRMS and -0.52% in CIS patients who progressed to MS, which were significantly greater than the rate observed in controls (-0.07%). Sample size calculations for future trials of disease-modifying treatments in RRMS, using brain atrophy as an outcome measure, are described. For SIENA, the BBSI and VE respectively, an estimated 123, 157 and 140 patients per treatment arm respectively would be required to show a 30% slowing of atrophy rate over two years. In CIS subjects brain atrophy rate was a significant prognostic factor, independent of T2 MRI lesions at baseline, for development of MS by five year follow-up. It was also the most significant MR predictor of disability in RRMS subjects. Cognitive assessment of RRMS patients at five year follow-up is described, and brain atrophy rate was a significant predictor of overall cognitive performance, and more specifically, of performance in tests of memory. The work in this thesis has identified methods for sensitively measuring progressive brain atrophy in MS. It has shown that brain atrophy changes in early MS are related to early clinical evolution, providing complementary information to clinical assessment that could be utilised to monitor disease progression.

Mntuyedwa, Ntandokazi Miranda. "Evaluating the Public Employment Services, administered by the Department of Labour in Mthatha." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/d1011638.

Full text
Abstract:
The Public Employment Service of South Africa (PES-SA) registers unemployed work seekers and placement opportunities to enable the Department of Labour (DoL) to place as many of these work seekers as possible in work. The aim of the present study is to identify challenges in the implementation of PES-SA, and to identify and make recommendations on areas for improvement and strengthening. The study is restricted to two of the six main PES-SA service offerings: (a) Registration Services and (b) Recruitment and Selection Services. The study was partially a process evaluation and partially an impact evaluation. The process evaluation assessed the quality of PES-SA‟s systems, structures, capacity, management and strategic focus. The purpose of the impact evaluation was to understand the challenges and gaps in delivery and implementation, the reasons behind the low matching success, and the extent of uptake by users. The evaluation therefore had a technical data-evaluation component and a component which assessed the reasons behind statistical and other quantitative data patterns. The study was conducted in Mthatha Department of Labour, Eastern Cape. The sample of the study was drawn from workseekers that are in the database and the Researcher drawn 40 respondents and the use of quantitative method was done. A questionnaire was developed and issued out to respondents. The Public Employment Service staff in Mthatha, Department of Labour was also interviewed. All five Employment Service Practitioners and a Career Counsellor were interviewed. A qualitative study was used for these respondents. In the responses of both teams it was deduced that the intention of the service is good but up to this far it has not proven any impact on the reduction of unemployment. Reasons behind the failure of the service were outlined to be the reluctance of the employers to utilise the service and the IT systems that is failing. The staff also mentioned that they were never trained on the service and therefore finds it difficult to render some of the services. Another challenge that was picked up from staff members is that the service is not yet legislated.

Breitbach, Verena. "Analysis of current segmentation procedures within the 3M Industry and Transportation Department and recommendations for future segmentation approaches." Master's thesis, Vysoká škola ekonomická v Praze, 2012. http://www.nusl.cz/ntk/nusl-114438.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract: The present Master thesis broaches the issue of market segmentation and its importance for the Industry and Transportation department of 3M Česko. Market segmentation has been recognized to be a very important tool for strategic marketing planning but currently, its implementation at 3M in the Czech Republic is in an early stage and therefore rather unorganized and not yet framed by precise guidelines. The hypothesis is that linking together need-based and descriptive customer behavior characteristics would lead to more effective market segmentation within the 3M Industry and Transportation department. Therefore, the goal of this paper is to first of all test if the hypothesis is right and if so develop a segmentation method that combines descriptive as well as need-based segmentation criteria. It is to be shown that such an approach could improve segmentation efforts at 3M Česko and lead to more reliable results. The question that arises is whether 3M has understood the benefits market segmentation can bring for the company. And what has to be done in order to improve clustering of customers and to increase 3M's sales volume? Can segmentation take place on one level or is a multi-layer approach the better option? The present study tries to answer these questions by comparing theoretical findings from an extensive literature review with results obtained from semistructured interviews with 3M sales and marketing managers. Above all, one of the main points for improvement in the future is the collection of more market data and the combination of primary data with secondary information already available. The interviews have shown that even though managers are aware of the difficulty to understand 3M's complex and broad market, the feeling predominates that not enough effort is put into gathering additional information. Furthermore, it is recommended to perform descriptive segmentation through the usage of industry coding on a division-wide level, whereas need-based segmentation will be subject of each division individually. Moreover, keeping track of customer data in a standardized database is the key to success. The given recommendations are divided into actions that can be undertaken in the short, medium and long run in order to reach a department-wide effective and efficient use of the multi-layer segmentation in an organized and timely manner.

MBA Professional Report
The purpose of our professional project is to research the possible effects of the Department of Defense's (DoD) participation as a buyer in the commercial futures market for derivatives. The idea that DoD should participate in derivatives trading has been proposed and published by others in the past; however, the recommendations we reviewed failed to provide empirical evidence to highlight likely outcomes if their recommendations were put into practice. With this project, we research the likely effects that DoD purchases of oil on the commercial futures market would have on the market price. Additionally, we research to determine how substantial DoD savings or losses could be from practicing a hedging program. We take a mostly quantitative approach to investigate our questions, then integrate qualitative analysis to support our final conclusions and recommendations. The goal of this project is to achieve federal government recognition and consideration of our findings. We believe that hedging against the rising costs of fossil fuels in the commercial futures market is a terrific, low-risk action that DoD could practice in fuel procurement.

Bezuidenhout, Lizet Nicolene. "Emerging female consumers’ use of diagnostic cues in evaluating apparel assortment of South African department stores." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/41105.

Full text
Abstract:
Emerging markets have generated a lot of interest during the last couple of years; one reason for this is the economic growth potential of emerging markets and the opening up of new, interesting and potentially very lucrative groups of consumers. South Africa has a rich and diverse culture and shows signs of major socio-economic inequalities that are symptomatic of emerging economies. In South-Africa, department stores are significant to the emerging market female consumer market as they provide an extensive assortment of products and services. Department stores also offer a number of product categories and each provide an opportunity for indepth analysis. Work apparel is one such product category where more research is required in order to understand how these consumers evaluate product assortments. The purpose of this study was to explore and describe how the emerging market female consumer market (EFC) evaluates work wear product assortments in major South African department stores. The study makes a contribution to the field of retail, marketing and consumer behaviour in terms of a better understanding of the emerging market. It is also valuable in providing insight in consumers’ decision making processes towards work wear and preferences towards product assortment. The theoretical approach to the study included a literature review on the emerging market female consumer in South Africa, the South African retail environment and department stores, product assortment and product attributes. The cue diagnostic framework was used as a theoretical perspective for the study. This consumer-based approach was considered particularly appropriate for this study, in terms of the prioritization by a female consumer in an emerging market of product attributes when she is shopping for work wear and evaluating retailers’ product assortments. Combined with the literature review the cue diagnostic framework offered a theoretical basis for the study and provided an overall perspective on the specific phenomenon to be studied. An exploratory survey research design was employed together with a conjoint analysis method to provide insights into attribute ranking and level of influence of specific attributes. The sample consisted of 120 (n=120) female consumers living and working in Gauteng between the ages of 20 and 60, currently working with some sort of training, diploma or degree. Non-probability sampling methods were used, including purposive and snowball sampling. Respondents completed an online selfadministered questionnaire. To ensure an appropriate sample, the online questionnaire was also distributed in paper-based format.. The results of the study indicated that the emerging market female consumer market has set ideas and preferences which appeal to them when purchasing work wear from department stores in South Africa. Certain product attributes were found to be more important than others while some were used in conjunction with other attributes. This combining of attributes helped to strengthen the importance of these attributes in the decision making process. The study adds value, knowledge and insight to the existing literature on consumer preferences in emerging markets and the apparel attributes that inform these preferences. This research will be useful for researchers as well as marketers who are interested in marketing campaigns, product assortment planning and retail settings.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates how to create an environment for organizational change within the Market Research Department at the Gangler Company (a US-based consumer products company). I explore what is influencing the current cultural environment and which of those influencers can be shifted to encourage organizational change toward the “ideal” culture that the organization has identified. Using new institutionalism as the theoretical approach, I discuss the significance of institutional forces (such as the economy and the rise in technology) on the cultural elements (i.e. behaviors, ideas, material artifacts and social structures) in the Market Research Department. Lastly, I show that by understanding those institutional influences, I can better assess what cultural elements can be shifted and which cannot. Of the cultural elements that are able to be shifted, I recommend three interventions that the organization should employ: 1) from a contrive culture to a culture of candor, 2) from a culture of division to a culture of cohesion, and 3) from a culture of knowing to a culture of learning.

Abstract:
This paper addresses long waiting times in Swedish emergency units by examining if appropriate theories are applied to the healthcare sector. This is examined with a case study of the healthcare sector in Västra Götaland County where we have conducted semi-structured interviews with five members of the staff responsible for providing the county’s politicians with information for healthcare decisions as well as supporting the politicians in managing the healthcare sector. It is a qualitative study with an abductive approach. The findings from our empirical research indicate that one major reason for the emergency units’ long waiting times is that they have an influx of patients with relatively mild illnesses that could have been handled in the primary care. Explanations for that are that clients often are ill-informed and often expect to get better care at emergency units than in the primary care. Many of the emergency units’ misplaced patients are elderly and chronically ill. This study indicates that inappropriate theories have been applied to the healthcare sector in Västra Götaland County. The inspiration for the healthcare sector seems to be from traditional economics to a large extent. We conclude, however, that traditional economics is inappropriate on the healthcare sector in Västra Götaland County because of the lacking supply, lacking competition, irrational clients and risk for disadvantages. Instead, we suggest a higher focus on sociological market theories. This study is limited by the relatively low amount of interview subjects. We have, however, found indications in our empirical material for a connection between disadvantaged clients in the primary care and the increased influx to the emergency units. We hope that this could provide ideas for future and more elaborate studies. This paper is written in Swedish.

Abstract:

How information can be transferred efficiently within a large organization has been researched for a long time but has probably never been as important as it is in today´s global corporate world, where knowledge is an important key to success. To be able to successfully gather, analyze and transfer information throughout an organization is one of a Market Intelligence department´s main purposes. Decision makers throughout an organization are highly dependent on the quality of the Market Intelligence department´s findings and its communication and interaction activities.

The purpose of this thesis is therefore to investigate which critical factors that needs to be taken into consideration when a Market Intelligence department communicates its findings in order to facilitate knowledge transfer for their internal clients.

A theoretical background regarding communication and knowledge transfer is provided in order to understand the context of the thesis. The theoretical framework for this study is mainly based on Szulanski´s four critical dimensions of knowledge transfer; characteristics of the knowledge transferred, of the source, of the recipient and of the context in which the transfer takes place. In order to gather relevant empirical data for this study, Volvo Cars Corporation and its Market Intelligence department was contacted. The authors collected the primary data on site at Volvo Cars Corporation´s headquarter in Gothenburg, Sweden, during November 2009.

The study showed that there are several critical factors, some more important than others, that needs to be taken into consideration in order for a Market Intelligence department to communicate its findings in order to facilitate knowledge transfer for their internal clients.

An MI department needs to:

  • Consider the type of information and knowledge they intend to communicate and adjust its communication approach accordingly.
  • Be involved in their internal clients’ projects.
  • Be aware that today’s performance affects tomorrow’s credibility.
  • Understand its internal clients’ absorptive skills.
  • Schedule enough time for interaction and an oral presentation in the cases where it is needed.
  • Focus on building a relationship with its internal clients.
