Market is a meeting place for sellers and buyers to exchange goods and services. Besides that, the market can also be interpreted as a set of actual and potential buyers of a product. The market consists of all potential customers who have the same specific needs and desires where every customer is willing and able to carry out exchanges to satisfy their needs and desires. The market consists of two types, namely the modern market and traditional markets, while according to the type of activity, the market is divided into real markets and abstract markets. odern markets are markets that are managed by modern management, generally in urban areas as providers of goods and services with good quality and service to consumers (generally middle to upper class members of society). The modern market consists of malls, supermarkets, tstore departments, shopping centers, franchises, self-service mini shops and department stores. Goods sold in this market have various types. In addition to providing local goods, the modern market also provides imported goods, goods sold have relatively more guaranteed quality because of the strict prior selection so that goods that do not meet the requirements will be rejected in quantity. Modern markets generally have a measured inventory in the warehouse, in terms of price, the modern market has a definite price tag (the price listed before and after tax is imposed). Abstract:
The aim of the analysis was to identify the features and development trends of the warehouse market in Lublin against the background of regional and domestic markets in Poland, and, subsequently, to assess the market’s development prospects and its role in strengthening the economic development of the City of Lublin. Valuable data on the supply and demand side of the warehouse market in Lublin has been collected for the purpose of the article. The analysis of the data on warehouse market development, in Lublin as well as and in regional and domestic markets in Poland in 2015 and 2016, confirmed the market’s solid growth. The prospects of the warehouse market in Lublin are very promising, owing to such factors as: supply of a highly qualified labor force, relatively low labor costs, the improvement of transport infrastructure, the development of the Special Economic Zone Euro-Park Mielec Lublin Subzone, and, last but not least, the effective strategy of attracting investors pursued by the Department of Strategy and Investor Relations of the City Office in Lublin.

Abstract:
This paper examines several facets of gender integration within academic sociology: total segregation, as in all-male faculties; appointments of women in token or solo positions; variations in the departmental faculty sex ratio; and the “ghettoization” of women in lower academic ranks and positions with heavy committee assignments. These outcomes are analyzed at the organizational level as the product of the operation of internal and external labor markets in academia. Drawing on a representative 1984 national survey of sociology departments (N = 230), multivariate analyses indicate that a large proportion of the variation in gender integration from one department to the next can be predicted from the organizational context. Several organizational factors appear to militate against total segregation (all-male faculties) while promoting balance in the faculty sex ratio and in the distribution of academic rank. These include demand for labor in the form of job opportunities, especially those created through turnover; women in the institutional power structure, including a separate women's studies program; and a state legislative climate favoring women's legal and political rights.

Abstract The existence of a negative variance risk premium on agricultural futures contracts suggests that market participants pay to hedge unexpected increases in the volatility of these contracts. In this paper, we decompose the variance risk premium in corn and soybeans markets into jump and diffusive components using options and futures data from 2009 to 2021. We find that market participants on average only pay to hedge unexpected increases in jump volatility but not those in diffusive volatility. Furthermore, growing season uncertainty and the arrival of United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) announcements play important roles in driving the market’s fear of unexpectedly large price jumps.

AbstractObjectiveLimited acceptance of government food assistance programmes such as the US Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is a barrier that produces unequal access to market products for SNAP beneficiaries. There is a dearth of published evidence to explain the limited SNAP acceptance at farmers’ markets. The current project aimed to fill this gap; to identify and describe the barriers to markets’ acceptance of SNAP.DesignCross-sectional, semi-structured interviews were conducted.SettingAll interviews were conducted via telephone.SubjectsTwelve East Tennessee area market managers, vendors and other key stakeholders.ResultsMultiple barriers exist for SNAP implementation at markets including administrative and time limitations, prejudice from market vendors against SNAP beneficiaries, and resistance to invasive and burdensome requirements of the USDA SNAP application required for farmers’ markets.ConclusionsSNAP acceptance at farmers’ markets is a complex issue, especially for small, rural markets. If farmers’ markets are to serve as sustainable resources to increase food access, these issues must be addressed so that SNAP can be accepted. Successful implementation of SNAP at rural markets requires increased administrative support and vendor education about SNAP and its beneficiaries. A revised USDA SNAP application process for farmers’ markets should also be considered.

Abstract:
Traditional markets are places of interaction between sellers and buyers which are characterized by direct transactions and frequent bargaining processes. The existence of traditional markets makes people happy because traditional markets provide many basic daily needs and necessities and of course the prices are much cheaper than in supermarkets. Because of this, the development of traditional markets really needs to be improved, so that public interest increases, changes to traditional markets are needed. The development of traditional markets in Blitar can be seen, among other things, by physical renovations, activities to clean the environment around the market, arrangement of places and grouping of types of merchandise, orderly administration, order and security. Supporting factors include traditional market traders who always follow the advice and directions of market managers, the presence of cleaning staff, and good support from the Trade Department. However, there are also factors that hinder the development of traditional markets in increasing public interest, including: lack of public awareness about not throwing away rubbish, packaging of goods for sale that does not attract public interest, water drains that are often clogged with rubbish. The approach we take is a qualitative approach, such as going directly to traditional markets to see firsthand a clear picture and accurate facts.

Abstract:
This study delves into China’s carbon emissions trading markets, investigating the interplay between carbon price liquidity and stock liquidity. Focusing on 338 companies listed in the national and eight pilot markets of the carbon emissions trading system from August 2013 to October 2023, the empirical finding reveals a positive impact of carbon price liquidity on stock liquidity. Notably, this positive association manifests more robustly in industries characterized by low carbon intensity compared to those with high carbon intensity, is more prominent during the COVID-19 period than in preceding times, and is particularly accentuated in the Hubei Province and Chongqing, as opposed to the remaining seven regions. Intriguingly, both carbon price liquidity and stock liquidity display positive autocorrelations in vector autoregression analysis. The endogeneity concern is alleviated by the two-stage least squares regressions, using lagged carbon price liquidity as instrumental variables. This study contributes to an enhanced comprehension of the dynamic interaction between carbon price liquidity and stock liquidity contextualized within China’s evolving carbon market landscape. The insights garnered herein hold substantial value for investors and government stakeholders seeking to navigate this evolving financial terrain. Jain, Rahul. "Community colleges as labor market intermediaries: a comparative case study of departmental activities in reducing labor market gaps." Thesis, Georgia Institute of Technology, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/37240.

Full text
Abstract:
Labor market intermediaries (LMIs) have taken on a greater role in regional labor markets as flexibility of work has increased over the past thirty years. These shifting roles necessitate a greater look at institutions that act as LMIs and the services they perform for workers and employers. Community colleges have recently been highlighted as one of the institutions serving workers that offer market molding activities, going beyond more traditional LMI market matching activities. This study compared four LMI placement and career activities - project based learning, internships and cooperative education, specialized accreditation, and industry advisement through councils - for five similar programs of study at community colleges in the City University of New York (CUNY) system to analyze the effects of these activities on employment placement. Greater utilization of these activities by community college departments was found in most cases to be beneficial for students as it regards employment placement in career fields related to the field of study. Activities that were successful in encouraging students to take part in forms of assessment of job-readiness, either through existing standardized testing of job skills or actual work experience, were found to be particularly valuable. These outcomes suggest that mature industries and occupations with established forms of assessment are more likely to provide a smooth transition from degree attainment to employment. Implications for community college administrators and funders are discussed.

Anderson, Valerie Margaret. "Assessment and optimisation of MRI measures of atrophy as potential markers of disease progression in multiple sclerosis." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2008. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/5300/.

Full text
Abstract:
There is a need for sensitive measures of disease progression in multiple sclerosis (MS) to monitor treatment effects and understand disease evolution. MRI measures of brain atrophy have been proposed for this purpose. This thesis investigates a number of measurement techniques to assess their relative ability to monitor disease progression in clinically isolated syndromes (CIS) and early relapsing remitting MS (RRMS). Presented, is work demonstrating that measurement techniques and MR acquisitions can be optimised to give small but significant improvements in measurement sensitivity and precision, which provided greater statistical power. Direct comparison of numerous techniques demonstrated significant differences between them. Atrophy measurements from SIENA and the BBSI (registration-based techniques) were significantly more precise than segmentation and subtraction of brain volumes, although larger percentage losses were observed in grey matter fraction. Ventricular enlargement (VE) gave similar statistical power and these techniques were robust and reliable; scan-rescan measurement error was <0.01% of brain volume for BBSI and SIENA and <0.04ml for VE. Annual atrophy rates (using SIENA) were -0.78% in RRMS and -0.52% in CIS patients who progressed to MS, which were significantly greater than the rate observed in controls (-0.07%). Sample size calculations for future trials of disease-modifying treatments in RRMS, using brain atrophy as an outcome measure, are described. For SIENA, the BBSI and VE respectively, an estimated 123, 157 and 140 patients per treatment arm respectively would be required to show a 30% slowing of atrophy rate over two years. In CIS subjects brain atrophy rate was a significant prognostic factor, independent of T2 MRI lesions at baseline, for development of MS by five year follow-up. It was also the most significant MR predictor of disability in RRMS subjects. Cognitive assessment of RRMS patients at five year follow-up is described, and brain atrophy rate was a significant predictor of overall cognitive performance, and more specifically, of performance in tests of memory. The work in this thesis has identified methods for sensitively measuring progressive brain atrophy in MS. It has shown that brain atrophy changes in early MS are related to early clinical evolution, providing complementary information to clinical assessment that could be utilised to monitor disease progression.

Abstract:
AbstractIn 2013, the United Kingdom Department for International Development and the Department of Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy published a business case for the Carbon Market Finance Programme (CMFP). The core mandate: to build capacity and develop aids for least developed countries in sub-Saharan Africa to access finance via the carbon market. The chosen strategy involved signing emission reduction purchase agreements with private sector enterprises, using the United Nations Framework Convention for Climate Change’s Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) to verify generation of tradeable certified emissions reductions. The World Bank’s Carbon Initiative for Development (Ci-Dev) would implement the 12-year program. The team for the 2019 midterm evaluation found that program uncertainty—from sociopolitical challenges in pilot markets to global indecision on the future of Article 6 and carbon markets—would complicate assessing progress toward business case objectives. The collapse and failed recovery of the carbon market impacted underlying assumptions of the CMFP’s theory of change, and uncertainty about CDM’s future complicated evaluation of program sustainability. This chapter presents a practical approach to using realist evaluation to overcome the contextual uncertainties of the carbon market landscape, providing strengths and weaknesses of the approach applied and recommending a revised approach for future evaluations.

Abstract:
With the recent trend of reducing U.S. military expenditures, it has become desirable to develop dual use of certain Department of Defense facilities. These efforts have a commercial purpose, while still retaining a military benefit. The goals of these efforts are to make U.S. business more competitive in world markets, to develop the technology to solve pressing national problems, and to maintain intact the necessary talent pool and equipment for possible military needs. In a recent initiative described in this paper, test cell equipment at the Arnold Engineering Development Center, Arnold AFB, Tennessee, was modified and expanded to allow development by the Westinghouse Electric Corporation of low-emission combustors for heavy-duty gas turbines for commercial power generation.

Abstract:
In this age of digitalization and technological advancement, the labor market of translation has witnessed significant turns in response to market needs. Translation departments in Iraq, unfortunately, have neither updated their educational system nor their curricula to meet these needs. This paper aims to present a design of a supplementary course newly introduced in the Department of Translation, College of Languages, University of Duhok. The course title is Machine-Aided Translation and Post-Editing. Following the Bologna process which aims to improve the quality of higher education, this course has been added recently to the department’s curriculum and taught to fourth-year students of the academic year (2022-2023) as part of the requirements of their graduation project, viz., translation project, which is their main course. Having completed the course, a close-ended questionnaire was distributed to seventy-five students to evaluate the course. Following the quantitative approach in this study research design, the course mostly achieved ‘very good’ results regarding question themes pertinent to the instructor, the course, and the student’s self-evaluation. This study has significant implications for the educational process in that it stresses the need for continuous updating of the curriculum of the department and consequently students’ competences to meet evolving market needs

Abstract:
Volatile markets, tough customer expectations, and short product life cycles are just some of the challenges the automotive industry has to deal with. In this context, important quality features are expressed as key product characteristics (KPC). The process of defining and reviewing such KPCs concerns each department of an automobile company. This paper presents a method for an intersubjective problem understanding of inter-divisional working groups and a common product KPC’s definition. The scientific contribution lies in the field of quality assessment for the premium-segment automotive industry, while the novelty can be found in providing the opportunity to take quality decisions based on variation simulations and on high-end-visualizations. The proposed method aims to realize and implement a higher premium quality standard and, at the same time, to reduce the number of physical prototypes, to shorten development times and to facilitate an intersubjective problem understanding. In relation to the developed method, an industrial application and its results are presented.

Abstract:
As imbedded as it is in technology, the history of flight is also chock full of people stories. The history of the helicopter, one of the most versatile flying machines ever designed, abounds in such stories. This text looks at the development of Intercity Airlines Company's SG Mark VI by a unique team based for a time in Montreal, Quebec. Bernard W. Sznycer and Selma G. Gottlieb conceived one of the most advanced and innovative helicopter of its day. Designed to minimize vibrations and facilitate production, the SG Mark VI first flew in July 1947. Canada's Department of Transport awarded a Certificate of Airworthiness to a second prototype, in April 1951. The SG Mark VI was the first helicopter designed within the British Commonwealth of Nations to be so honored. Sadly, by then, American helicopters all but dominated the civilian and military markets. The SG Mark VI was abandoned during the winter of 1953-54 and both Sznycer and Gottlieb returned to the United States.

Abstract:
Companies in the developed world operates easily in the global market because the factors that influence globalization of logistics management have been studied and the elements influencing globalization have made the process flexible and accommodating. But little is known about the factors that influence globalization of logistics management in Nigeria. Therefore, this study set out to determine the various factors that could influence globalization of logistics management in Nigeria. The study adopted a quantitative approach through the use of a questionnaire survey carried out among selected professionals and consultants in operations, logistics and supply chain department of companies within Lagos, Nigeria. Data gathered were analysed using percentages, mean item score and factor analysis. The research instrument reliability was verified using Cronbach alpha test while the factorability of the data collected was tested using the Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin measure of sampling adequacy and Bartlett's Test of Sphericity. The result revealed that the three cluster factors that influence globalization of logistics management in Nigeria are political, cultural, and economic which were ranked highest. The findings also revealed that all respondents have similar views on the factors that influence globalization in Nigeria. Lastly, since the respondents have agreed that the factors listed influence globalization of logistics management, it is therefore necessary for the Nigerian government and stakeholders in logistics management to look into these factors as a way of closely integrating markets, economies, societies, and ensuring more products are available to consumers universally.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract A proposed molten carbonate fuel cell power plant design, intended for commercial production by the end of the 1990’s and developed under the auspices of the U.S. Department of Energy and the Gas Research Institute, has been analyzed with exergy analysis. The commercial production units, targeted for dispersed power generation markets, are based on an existing demonstration molten carbonate fuel cell power plant design which entered the start-up phase in early 1996. Exergy analysis of the commercial plant design shows the overall, second-law system efficiency to be 53 percent. The principal inefficiency, 17 percent of the total, lies in the catalytic combustor. Another major inefficiency is the stack loss, 14 percent. Heat transfer accounts for approximately 6% of the loss. System reconfigurations, incorporating a steam cycle with reheat (System I) and a gas turbine cycle (System II), both with revised heat exchanger networks, for significant improvement are proposed and evaluated. The second-law system efficiency is raised to 66% in System I and to 70% for System II.

Abstract:
Conversion of small tutbomachinery advanced technology from USA Department of Defense to commercial markets of opportunity is discussed in the light of recent development of the T-100 Multipurpose Small Power Unit (MPSPU) for the U.S. Army. For the power class from 50 SHP to 75 SHP (37 KW to 56 KW), the small T-100 MPSPU Gas Turbine represents a milestone in achieved simple-cycle non-heat-exchanged thermal efficiency. Application of this turbomachinery technology, and in combination with heat recovery to compact turboalternator systems, is a prime candidate for conversion from airborne/defense use only to defense/commercial and airborne/ground implementation. The T-100 MPSPU Test Program achievements are summarized in this paper. Also, preliminary design/off-design studies are presented for a turboalternator based on T-100 MPSPU components, and a scaled derivative that would achieve 60 KWe at modest turbine inlet temperature is presented. The turboalternator design objective is to provide a reliable compact source of electric power for military and commercial use in stationary, vehicular and aircraft applications that will run on most fuels, with low initial and operating costs, runs quietly, has low emissions and provides good to excellent specific fuel consumption.

Full text
Abstract:
The overarching goals for the UK in relation to global water security are to; tackle and reverse growing water insecurity and its consequences caused by depletion and degradation of natural water sources; and address poor water management and increasing demand. To do this, the UK has a well-developed water ‘offer’ that together can help reach the goal of global water security. This note details some of that water offer: UK water leadership: The UK developed the concept of modern sanitation and water supply, with an early example being the Victorian Bazalgette London sewer; Ownership and regulation: The UK has four models of ownership: government department in Northern Ireland, GoCo in Scotland, Mutual in Wales, and private companies in England. But the common thread is strong and clear, regulation to deliver the right outcomes for society; Competition and markets: The UK set up the world’s first water retail markets for business customers, delivering savings and environmental benefits. Similar market mechanisms are being developed for sewage sludge, which will help drive circular economy solutions; Innovation: The UK has a huge number of water tech start-ups and most water companies have labs and pilot schemes to support these fledgling companies. At the same time, the English regulator, Ofwat, has established a huge innovation fund, which along with the Scottish Hydro Nation initiative has made the UK the best place in the world for water innovation and tech.

Full text
Abstract:
This report presents OVE's independent validation of the Expanded Project Supervision Reports fourth exercise (XPSRs), prepared by the Structured and Corporate Finance Department (SCF). The Evaluation Cooperation Group (ECG)'s guidelines require the preparation of the XPSR in the same year they reached Early Operating Maturity (EOM). SCF is still in noncompliance with this requirement since the current exercise validated the XPSRs of projects that reached EOM in 2010. These 15 projects represent US$1.37 billion among Loans and Guarantees, supporting total project costs of about US$4.65 billion. Most of the self-evaluated projects (67%) are from nonfinancial markets. Five self-evaluated projects are from financial markets. Four projects were prepaid. Each project is evaluated on four dimensions: Development Outcome, Profitability, Additionality and Work Quality. The Development Outcome dimension assesses project performance in four areas: Business Performance, Economic Development, Environmental and Social Effects and Private Sector Development. The Profitability dimension measures the project's gross profit contribution to IDB. The Additionality dimension assesses whether the project adds value regarding financial, Environmental, corporate governance and regulatory issues. Finally, the Work Quality dimension assesses the Bank's work performance in three areas: Screening, Appraisal and Structuring; Monitoring and Supervision Quality and Role and Contribution to IDB. This report presents the main findings and conclusions from the evaluation exercise. Some specific financial, business or proprietary information has been edited, in compliance with the Bank's Access to Information Policy.

Zamenian, Hamed, and Dulcy M. Abraham. Installation and Maintenance of Raised Pavement Markers at State Transportation Agencies: Synthesis of Current Practices. Purdue University, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.5703/1288284317135.

Full text
Abstract:
Although raised pavement markers (RPMs) have been widely applied by the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT), there have been multiple cases where snowplowing activities have damaged pavements as well as the raised pavement markers on INDOT’s roadway assets. Dislodged raised pavement markers could reduce the design life of pavements because they leave openings for water and debris to infiltrate through pavement section. Interviews with INDOT personnel indicated that the proper installation of the markers and careful attention to the tooling of the center line of the concrete pavements could alleviate this problem. To explore issues related to the proper installation of RPMs, this study (INDOT/JTRP SPR 4318) was launched by the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT)/Joint Transportation Program (JTRP) to develop a synthesis of current practices on installation and maintenance of raised pavement markers at State Transportation Agencies (STAs) in the U.S. The study was conducted using a qualitative exploratory approach focusing on the review of current practices in installation and maintenance of raised pavement markers among STAs. Survey analysis and focused interviews with personnel from STAs, along with reviews of documents provided by STAs were the avenues used for data collection in this project.

Abstract:
Between 2014 and 2020 over 1.8 million refugees fled from Venezuela to Colombia as a result of a humanitarian crisis, many of them without a regular migratory status. We study the short- to medium-term labor market impacts in Colombia of the Permiso Temporal de Permanencia program, the largest migratory amnesty program offered to undocumented migrants in a developing country in modern history. The program granted regular migratory status and work permits to nearly half a million undocumented Venezuelan migrants in Colombia in August 2018. To identify the effects of the program, we match confidential administrative data on the location of undocumented migrants with department-monthly data from household surveys and compare labor outcomes in departments that were granted different average time windows to register for the amnesty online, before and after the program roll-out. We are only able to distinguish negative albeit negligible effects of the program on the formal employment of Colombian workers. These effects are predominantly concentrated in highly educated and in female workers.

Full text
Abstract:
The Government of Uganda has a vision for a digitally empowered society, which is set out in a wide range of government documents. Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) have their own digital strategies cascading down the central vision, but the government’s tax strategy seems disconnected from it. Tax policy has focused less on the societal and economic benefits of digitalisation, and more on the attractiveness of digital services and their providers as a potential source of tax revenue. Tax policymakers have a responsibility to ensure that the design of the tax system is properly aligned with broader government policies and priorities. In many cases tax policy has come to be seen as a barrier rather than an enabler of progress on other policy issues. This is not always the fault of the Tax Policy Department. Being properly joined up is a shared responsibility, and MDAs have to reach out and connect with tax policymakers to strengthen their own strategies. This short Policy Brief explores the need for a Tax Strategy for a Digital Uganda. It asks what more tax policy in Uganda can do to tackle market failure, and support the roll-out of the government’s ambitions for use of digital services.
