Abstract:
Purpose: Department heads play a pivotal role in the functioning of departments in secondary schools. However, quantitative research about the role of departmental leadership for the development of professional learning communities (PLCs) in subject departments in secondary schools remains scarce. As PLCs are seen as promising contexts for teachers’ continuous professional development, it is highly relevant to study how department heads can facilitate PLC characteristics in their department. Research methodology: This study examines how two dimensions of departmental leadership (group- and development-oriented) relate to interpersonal PLC characteristics in departments. Survey data were collected from 248 experienced mathematics and French teachers in 62 departments in secondary schools in Flanders (Belgium). Two multilevel regression analyses were conducted with collective responsibility and reflective dialogue as dependent interpersonal PLC characteristics. We controlled for several demographic teacher variables and structural departmental variables. Findings: Our results nurture optimism about the potential of departmental leadership for interpersonal PLC characteristics. More specifically, teachers who perceive high group-oriented departmental leadership experience more collective responsibility in their department. Furthermore, teachers’ perceptions of both group-oriented and development-oriented departmental leadership are significantly related to the reported frequency of teachers’ reflective dialogues. Implications: This study suggests that department heads play a critical role in facilitating interpersonal PLC characteristics in departments. As a result, department heads need to be carefully selected and adequately supported. As this article is one of the first to offer a quantitative perspective on this matter, it offers an instrument for future studies and informs policy about departmental leadership practices.

Abstract:
The purpose of this paper is to evaluate information literacy (IL) education in library schools in Nigeria, to establish whether they are in line with international and national library and information science (LIS) standards (“library schools” here indicates departments offering LIS qualifications within higher education institutions). The study used document analysis and qualitative methods. First, departmental documents from heads of department and students’ handbooks containing the LIS curriculum were collected from thirty (30) library schools in Nigeria and analyzed. Secondly, lecturers in the department of LIS from the thirteen (13) library schools offering an IL course were engaged in an interview. The study revealed a significant improvement compared to previous studies as 13 out of the 30 Nigerian universities surveyed offered the course “information literacy” as a stand-alone course in the department of LIS. Unfortunately, the study found that majority of the LIS departments do not have IL laboratories for students to acquire practical skills. These findings will provide useful data for stakeholders in the university system such as supervising bodies, university management, heads of department, and library associations and regulatory bodies, assisting them in the creation of policies related to the integration of IL courses into the school system and in enforcing the implementation of these policies.

Abstract:
The scientific and reasonable departmental collaboration is the key to effective energy conservation work carried out by local governments. This study collects energy-saving policy texts and energy efficiency data of 121 local governments, uses data mining, social network analysis, and related analysis methods to analyze the departmental collaborations in local government energy-saving, and reveals the main problems in departmental collaborations. The results show that: from the structural law, the collaborations with the Department of Water Resources should be strengthened, and the collaborations with Department of Culture and Tourism and Department of Education should be reduced, which can improve energy efficiency. The main problem of current departmental collaborations is that Department of Water Resources is facing obvious lack of collaborations, and the collaborations between relevant departments and Department of Water Resources should be strengthened.

Abstract:
Heads of agricultural economics and agribusiness departments across the United States are surveyed to develop an inventory of distance education (DE) offerings by their departments. Perceived challenges, strategies for use, and future plans for DE are assessed. While the majority of the responding departments offer DE, the department heads believed that faculty time costs to develop/deliver DE are high relative to traditional delivery and that both strategic plans for implementing DE and financial incentives for faculty to adopt DE are lacking. The department heads did, however, have positive views about the technological ability of students to use distance courses.

Abstract:
Background/Context Although academic departments have more tools to advance faculty diversity than ever before, many still downplay their own responsibility throughout the hiring process. This results in a cycle of apathy that activates once searches are already under way, and structural change is out of reach. Yet few studies empirically outline what structural change entails so that departments can play a more active role in improving search processes before hiring begins. Purpose/Objective/Research Question/Focus of Study This study materializes the underlying mechanics of academic hiring by describing the process of departmental hiring priorities, and identifies how adjusting them can create the optimal conditions for supporting faculty diversity. Population/Participants/Subjects Participants were 23 academic personnel spanning four academic departments, including deans, department chairs, equity administrators, and faculty search committee members. Research Design This qualitative study uses a blend of multiple case study and grounded theory designs. The multiple case study method guided the site, case, participant selection, and data collection procedures. Grounded theory was employed primarily in the data coding and analysis phases. Data Collection and Analysis Data were collected from an institutional site fictitiously named Northfield University, a research-intensive four-year university located in the western region of the United States. Four departments were selected as case studies based on convenience sampling from four broader divisions: social sciences, life sciences, humanities, and physical sciences. Twenty-three participants spanning multiple positions and departments participated in a total of 31 semistructured interviews. These data were initially coded and analyzed using the constant comparative method and then further analyzed using cross-case analysis. Findings/Results Findings reveal the primary determinants of departmental hiring priorities that bred subfield conservatism, or the hesitancy to expand the department in new and different hiring directions based on resource constraint and subfield reproduction. This was a realistic yet troubling organizational response that inhibited opportunities for diversity before searches even began. Results also document the steps that departments took to thwart subfield conservatism in order to more aptly attract and elevate racially minoritized candidates. Conclusions/Recommendations This study highlights the untapped potential that hiring priorities hold for advancing faculty diversity. Department chairs and deans are uniquely positioned to implement initiatives that rearrange the structural conditions of faculty hiring that empower faculty to create equity-oriented positions beyond traditional departmental boundaries.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the history of development and formation of the Departmentof Physical Education of the Altai State University. The process of development of the departmentis inextricably linked with the process of becoming a university, the first classical university inthe Altai Territory. On January 31, 1973, the bureau of the regional committee of the CPSU, theexecutive committee of the regional Council of Workers' Deputies, adopted a joint resolution «Onthe organization of the Altai State University», which fixed the fundamental provisions related to thecreation of the university. The creation of the university, as well as the creation of the department ofphysical education, was complicated by the fact that ASU was created on an independent basis, i. e.the creation of the material base was to take place as the young university grew. The development ofthe sports base of the department, as well as the material base of the university, began almost fromscratch. For the organization of the university, an unprecedented time for the post-war history ofhigher education was allotted — only three months. At the end of May, a rector was appointed, andin September it was already necessary to start classes. The Department of Physical Education was created among the first departments, which built theeducational process with students, on sports facilities provided at the disposal of the Department onlease terms. The process of creating the sports base of the university began in 1975 and until 1995,the department of physical education, first under the leadership of Dmitry Yakovlevich Zvyagin, and since 1977, headed by the head of the department Petr Yakovlevich Dugnist, with their ownhands, with the help of teachers of the department and students of the university built a ski base, arecreation center “Lake Krasilovo”, a sports hall in the annex building on Socialist Avenue, a sportsand recreation complex. In parallel with the construction, the department solved the issues of theformation of the discipline “physical education”, developed its personnel potential. Much attentionwas paid to the development of sports at the university. Since 1976, and this in the complete absenceof their own sports facilities, students, staff and teachers of the university have actively participatedin city, regional and regional competitions, literally gnawing prizes and championship titles. The article analyzes the stages of development of the department, considers the main directionsof its activities, presents the results of many years of experience of the department. The study usedmaterials on the creation of the university by the first rector of ASU V.I. Neverov, articles andpublications of newspapers: “For Science”, “Altaiskaya Pravda”, “Altai sport”, materials from thearchive of the Altai State University, memoirs of teachers of the department, who have been workingpractically since the foundation of the department.

Abstract:
This study aims to align the outputs of the Department of Physical Education (PE) and Sports Science with the needs of the Omani labor market for specialists in sports management in light of Oman vision 2040 (in the areas of education and economics), by identifying the extent to which the labor market needs to create programs specialized in sports management in the Department of Physical Education and Sports Sciences. The study used the descriptive approach using a questionnaire. The size of the research sample was 211 respondents from institutions related to the field of physical education and sports science, and who are benefiting from the outcomes of sports management. The results of the study indicated that: there is an urgent need to introduce the Sports Management major to be offered in the Department of Physical Education and Sports Science; administrative tasks in sports institutions reflect the need to have specialists in sports management. The research team recommended that the Department of PE and Sports Science should be informed on the experiences of similar departments at other higher education institutions that have introduced such programs. Furthermore, the study recommended the formation of a joint committee between the Department and the concerned institutions to discuss the needs of the labor market, to review the Department's policies towards introducing the specialty of sports management, and to consider the possibility of adapting the study plan for partnership with colleges related to sports management to offer majors serving students specializing in sports management.

Abstract:
This study investigates the ways in which heads of academic department use student evaluation of instruction (SEI) to make decisions about individual faculty members and/or whole academic departments. The study utilized a convenience sample of 57 heads of department, who completed an online questionnaire with two main constructs, which were assessed at the interval level of measurement. The results of the study revealed significant differences between heads of department who tend to trust SEI results compared to those who tend not to trust SEI results. The findings suggest there is a significant association between how heads of department perceive SEI and how they use it to make decisions about individual faculty members and their academic departments. In addition, analysis of the respondents as per two groups, according to their attitudes of trust or distrust toward SEI, showed that disparities within these groups were greater with respect to issues or decisions that affect individuals as opposed to whole departments. Therefore, the study concludes that decisions should not be made based solely on the results of SEI; rather, multiple sources of evaluation should be utilized to make proper decisions. The author strongly recommends that academic leaders should use SEI across multiple years or courses in order to obtain more reliable information. Future research may include qualitative studies on the topic and discipline-specific studies within certain academic departments or college clusters.

Abstract:
This article examines how tribal education department leaders perceive the process of educational policy problem recognition and definition in their governments. This piece presents the perspectives of two education department directors working in two different federally recognized tribal governments located in Northern California. The data presented in this article was gathered through multiple interviews with the education department directors. The interviews were recorded, then transcribed and analyzed for themes sentence-by-sentence with the use of open coding methodology. The study argues that policy problem recognition and definition processes are, in part, shaped by (1) the expertise and ideologies of the department leadership within tribal governments; (2) the hands-on work of department leadership in the community; and (3) the flow of policy problem indicators from departments to council.

The objectives of this research were to compare the happiness and thinking styles of undergraduate students in the Physical Education and Sports Teaching Department and different departments, and to examine the relations between the students’ happiness levels and their thinking styles. Using the correlational study design 661, undergraduate students were determined by a convenience sampling method. Participants were selected in terms of being easily accessible from Gazi University, which is located in the Ankara province, Turkey. The analysis indicated that the Department of Physical Education and Sports Teaching students' average level of happiness was significantly higher than in some other departments. However, the Department of Physical Education and Sports Teaching students' need for cognition was not significantly different from the students from other departments. Physical Education and Sports Teaching students' faith in intuition was significantly higher than the Department of Guidance and Psychological Counseling students’. Besides, the happiness levels and thinking styles did not differ significantly by gender. There was a positive correlation between their faith in intuition and happiness. However, there was no significant relation between their happiness levels and need for cognition, nor need for cognition and their faith in intuition.

Abstract:
Curriculum is the heart of teaching and learning program. Through a curriculum, teachers formulate the designated learning objectives and their outcomes and transform all those formulated goals to students. This paper has an attempt to elaborate significant information and models on curriculum that could be developed at the English Education Department (PBI – Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris) of Ar-Raniry State Islamic University (UIN Ar-Raniry) Darussalam, Banda Aceh as an Islamic higher education institution. The paper reviews various literatures on language learning curriculum, teaching English as a foreign language curriculum, and professional learning curriculum. The paper also analyses the 2016/2017 UIN Ar-Raniry manual/handbook, and the 2015 annual report of the PBI department curriculum monitoring and evaluation (Monev). The findings elucidate that the PBI department curriculum has met a standardized curriculum quality. Yet, some weaknesses that could decelerate the language acquisition process are still found in such the PBI department curriculum.
