Abstract:
Ethical problems are receiving a great deal of attention recently in medical community. In the school of dental community, it has been concerned with these things. This survey was conducted to find out of the school of dentisty Korean students' perceptions toward the ethical problems. Data was collected by using questionnare. We received 128 cases that senior was 61 and freshman was 67. This collected data showed that school of dentistry students regard bribery as the most common ethical problem. Other frequently mentioned problems are treatment equality, refusal and unkindness of patient. Also, they agreed to artificial abortion in 65.6%, euthanasia in 88.8%, brain death in 90.2%, in vitro fertilization in 95.2%, and homosexuality in 56.8%. But, They disagreed to human duplication in 80.0%. School of dentistry students' perceptions was not statistically by grade. It means that school of dentistry education is far from ethics education. Therefore, school of dentistry curriculum ought to occupy a greater portion of the ethical curriculum for students. Also, Many researchers should carry out that these issues needs to be done in a more comprehensive way.

Abstract:

Pierre Fauchard, considered the father of dentistry, contributed to the development of different fields of dentistry that we know today. However, the contribution of this important individual to the fields of oral medicine and oral and maxillofacial pathology is unknown. This study aimed to identify Pierre Fauchard’s contribution to these areas of dentistry. We focused on “Le Chirurgien Dentiste, or Traité des Dents” in both French and English, looking for information about the oral diseases diagnosed and treated by Fauchard. Information on patient history, disease description, treatment applied, and clinical follow-up was collected. A contemporary analysis of the diseases was performed, and the collected data were systematized, reported, and analyzed descriptively, according to the current literature on the addressed topics. Information on conditions such as scurvy, parulides, epulides, oral ulcers, entoalveolar abscesses, dental alterations, and post-exodontia incidents were elucidated. Findings indicated that Pierre Fauchard described, diagnosed, and treated different soft and hard tissue diseases of great interest to the fields of oral medicine and oral and maxillofacial pathology.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Pierre Fauchard (1678–1761) is considered the father of modern dentistry. His seminal book, Le Chirurgien Dentiste, ou Traité des Dents (1728), is the discipline’s first complete work. During the five years preceding its publication (1723–1728), Pierre Fauchard sought the opinions, contributions, and “ approbation” (approval) of 19 of his colleagues: six physicians, 12 surgeons, and one dentist. The first and most important contributor to the manuscript was Jean Devaux, surgeon and mentor to Fauchard. The next six reviewers were illustrious physicians and scientists of the time: Philippe Hecquet, Jean-Claude Adrien Helvetius, Jean Baptiste Silva, Antoine DeJussieu, Raymond Jacob Finot, and Antoine Benignus Winslow. The subsequent 12 reviewers were all sworn-surgeons (certified by St. Côme), including a lone dentist, Laudumiey, surgeon-dentist to His Majesty, Philip V, King of Spain. Fauchard knew that for dentistry to be regarded as a learned profession, and perhaps for Fauchard to be recognized as its leader, he needed the support and approval of the establishment before publishing his book. This is an account of how he attained this endorsement.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This literature considers Pierre Fauchard's exploits under historical context of the enlightenment movement and development of the surgery during 18th century in France. Le Chirurgien Dentiste, ou Traite des dents>, a vast collection of the former and contemporary dental knowledge, technologies, and skills, established Modern Dentistry. To emphasize the professionality of dental treatment and actions involving it, Fauchard replaces the title 'dental expert' with 'stomatologist, or Le Chirurgien Dentiste' As professionalism tried to contribute to the public interest by sharing dental knowledge and technolgies, it had become a model for the dentists. Moreover, the professionalism has been accepted as an important value throughout the manufacture crafts era and the modern capitalist industrial society. Also the principles of liberty, equality, and tolerance founded during enlightenment movement, which is based on empirical positivism and rational reason, has become the legal basis of modern nations. In order to resolve the contradiction or conflict between 'liberty and equality' by 'tolerance for the public benefit', Korean dentists need develop professionalism.
