For more than three decades, social scientists have struggled with the statistical consequences of aggregation. Ever since Robinson (1950) first shocked a whole generation of social scientists with his demonstration of the “ecological fallacy,” much has been written about alleged fallacies, biases, pitfalls, and hazards of one kind or another lurking behind aggregate data and about strategies for circumventing them (Goodman, 1953, 1959; Blalock 1964; Scheuch 1966; Alker 1969; Shively 1969, 1974; Hannan 1971; Hammond 1973; Meckstroth 1974; Hanushek, Jackson, and Kain 1974; Hannan and Burstein 1974; Irwin and Lichtman 1976; Smith 1977; Langbein and Lichtman 1978). Intrigued—or alarmed—by the recurrent observation that correlations and regressions based on aggregate data (group means) often differ dramatically from those based on individual data, researchers have sought to answer the traditional question of ecological analysis: under what conditions can inferences to individual-level (micro) relationships be made from group-level (macro) data?

Abstract From 1972 to 1977 the West German artist Marianne Wex (1937-2020) undertook an extensive photographic research project that eventually was published as a book: Let's Take Back Our Space: “Female” and “Male” Body Language as a Result of Patriarchal Structures (1979). Both visual analysis and homeopathic demonstration of the patriarchal state's performative effect on somatic physical expression, the book is as much a work of renegade feminist sociology as it is a work of photo-conceptualism. This essay performs an archaeology of Let's Take Back Our Space, reading it in the context of contemporaneous aestheticopolitical discourses, including feminist autodidacticism.

Abstract:
Abstract The Netherlands and Denmark housed Europe’s first two postwar homophile organizations, and by the 1960s, activists were already debating anti-homosexual laws in national media (in the Netherlands) demonstrating publicly; thus Stonewall was not the origin of activism in either of these countries. Yet the events in New York City 1969 had two lasting influences in these countries: first, Stonewall catalyzed a transnational ‘consciousness’ (or solidarity) among gay and lesbian activists during a period of radicalization; and second, the Christopher Street Liberation Day 1970 inspired the visible demonstrations known today as ‘Pride’ celebrations. From 1971, Denmark’s national organization planned Christopher Street Day demonstrations every June; and that same year, a radical Gay Liberation Front split off from the association. From 1977, the Netherlands planned its own late-June demonstrations, often with transnational themes (e.g. Anita Bryant in 1977, the Iranian Revolution in 1979). In the following decades, these demonstrations of gay/lesbian visibility moved to August, and Denmark (and Belgium) dropped Christopher Street from event names. Yet scholars, activists, and the general public still evoke the memory of the first Liberation Day when referring to a ‘post-Stonewall’ era in the Netherlands and Denmark.

Abstract:
Occupational therapists who wish to see services expand in community settings must be prepared to take an active role in program development. The article examines 12 program development strategies which are illustrated using the experience of developing a rural program in a social service system. Community occupational therapy services in Prince Edward Island were initially developed, from 1977 to 1979, by a small group of occupational therapists. The group obtained Federal Welfare Demonstration Grant funding for a pilot project which was administered by the provincial Department of Social Services. In 1979, the Prince Edward Island Provincial Government approved ongoing funding for an Island-wide community occupational therapy service.

Abstract:
This article compares the effects of two different pay-for-performance systems implemented as a result of the Civil Service Reform Act of 1978. Analyses are based on responses to five annual attitude surveys administered between 1979 and 1984 to civilian employees at four Navy R&D laboratories. Two of the labs, located in California, implemented pay for performance for all their white collar employees under a CSRA demonstration project testing an integrated approach to pay performance appraisal and position classification. The other two labs, located on the East coast, served as a comparison group for the federal-wide merit pay system covering supervisors and managers. Overall results were found to be more positive for the two demonstration labs in California.

Abstract:
In the century since Franz Boas began his field work on the Northwest Coast, the Kwakwaka'wakw1 potlatch has proved irresistible to the anthropological imagination. It has been variously interpreted as an interest-bearing investment of property (Boas 1897), as a demonstration of a paranoid, megalomaniacal personality (Benedict 1934), as a substitution for warfare (Codere 1950), as a means of distributing food (Piddcocke 1965; Vayda 1961), as a phenomenon of social morphology (Levi-Strauss 1969; Rosman and Rubel 1971), and as a religious event (Goldman 1975; Walens 1981). Indeed, an intellectual history of anthropology can now be written simply by examining how the Kwakwaka'wakw potlatch has served the various theoretical schools (see Michaelson 1979). If anything unites such disparate accounts, however, I suggest it is an underestimation of the impact of European colonization on Kwakwaka'wakw society.2 Our understanding of the nineteenth-century potlatch has been limited by a tendency to exclude Kwakwaka'wakw cosmology from the colonial power dynamic. This study contributes, then, to the longrunning, and at times vociferous, scholarly discourse on the potlatch by focusing directly on the cultural repercussions of the colonial experience. Consequently, it is not an analysis simply of the funding or logistics of exchange: This essay attempts to situate the cosmologies behind the gift in their changing historical context in order to assess the socio-cultural impact of the colonial encounter on native systems of belief.

The Visually Impaired Program, Division of Special Education of the Oakland County (Michigan) Intermediate School District, obtained Federal Act 94-142 funding in 1979. The purpose of this funding was to encourage establishment of programs that facilitated special education in the least restrictive educational environment. The Visually Impaired Program utilized these funds to establish the Educational Low Vision Aids Screening Clinic and to provide comprehensive low vision evaluations by certified low vision specialists. * This paper describes clinic rationales, procedural implementation of services from 1979 to 1982, and resultant findings. The study served as a model for the establishment of a statewide program funded in October, 1985, by the Michigan Legislature and administered by the Michigan Commission for the Blind in cooperation with the Michigan Department of Education. * A Demonstration Project funded through 94-142 federal funds, 1979-1982.

As recently as 1975, Cyrille Vogel, in his Introduction aux sources du Moyen Age, was obliged to forego a demonstration of the transmission of the antiphoner, “given the complexity of research still in progress”.[1] Since then, with the completion in 1979 of the six-volume Corpus Antiphonalium Officii (= CAO) of René-Jean Hesbert, the foundations have been laid for all future historical research on the origins of the Roman office hours. Twelve selected sources are edited, first text-incipits of the sources in their original form, and then each complete text separately; more than this, in the two concluding volumes Hesbert undertook the task of classifying 800 sources of the office by means of statistical methods, in order thereby to facilitate the reconstruction of an archetype.[2]

This article reports the results of a 5-year follow-up study of training and certification of special education administrators. Responses to a postcard questionnaire were received from certification offices in the 50 states and Washington, DC. The data indicate that the greatest change since 1979 was in the number of state offices requiring special education coursework or demonstration of competency in special education as part of the general administration credential.

Abstract:
The study entitled “Speech Act Expressions in the Advertisements on Television: A Case Study of Three Advertisements Both Food & Health Products and Cell-phone Provider” seeks to illuminate the types of speech acts based on Searle (1979) and the approaches of advertisements proposed by Book and Schick (1996). This study mainly uses a qualitative method to analyze the collected data in this research. The data sources are in the form of verbal texts, namely, statements of the speaker’s dialogue and narration both Food & Health Product and cell-phone provider advertisements. These advertisements were taken from several private TV stations aired during 1st March – 30th April 2010. The three advertisements were selected and categorized into four styles, namely, dramatizations, demonstrations, presentations, and testimonials. These commercials were classified into three tones, namely, factual, emotional, and humorous. Furthermore, the research was conducted to investigate the types of speech acts expressed in these different styles and tones of advertisements, namely representatives, directives, commissives, expressive, and declaratives. The study has discovered three tones within testimonial, demonstration, and presentation styles. Furthermore, it has exposed one emotional tone within presentation style. And two factual tones within testimonial and demonstration styles. This research has obtained linguistic notion and comprehension for students who are engaged in learning speech act expression in several utterances, mainly advertisements. Abstract:
An Integrated Cotton Management (ICM) Demonstration project was conducted on the Demonstration Farm at the Maricopa Agricultural Center in 1999 for the second year. In this project, all current guidelines and recommendations disseminated by the University of Arizona were integrated in a systems approach for cotton production. The Extension Specialists in agronomy, entomology, irrigation management, weed sciences, and plant pathology following the University recommendations made the management decisions. On a 52.7 acre field, 78% Bt and 22% non-Bt cotton was planted into moisture on April 9, 1999. Because of problems with cool temperatures and deep seeding, a stand of only 25,000 plants/acre was established. Weed control was achieved with one preplant application and two cultivations. The field was sprayed three times for lygus and two times for whitefly control. Approximately 38.6 acre-inches of irrigation water was applied. An average of 3005 lb/acre of seed cotton were harvested. After harvesting, a field budget was established. The variable costs per acre were $594.96 and the total cost was $957.96/acre. Average micronaire was 4.45, strength was 28.41 gm/Tex, length was 1.10 (1/100 in.) and grade color was 21. The price received for the cotton was 74.82¢/lb, including LPD and hail damage payments, just over 3¢/lb below the break-even price. An additional $139/acre in PFC payments was received but not calculated into the budget. This project demonstrates the utility and compatibility of current recommendations and the potential for integration of all disciplinary guidelines in one system.

Abstract:
Short- staple variety trials were grown in two locations in Graham County in 1989. Exceptional weather conditions, coupled with good management practices, provided record cotton yields in the Safford valley. Delta Pine 77 was the highest yielding variety in the Thatcher location with a yield of 1740 pounds of lint per acre. An experimental acala from New Mexico came in second in this triad ahead of Delta Pine 90. Delta Pine 90 was the highest yielding variety in the Eden area with a yield of 1196 pounds per acre. Data on percent first pick plant height and plant populations are presented for each variety in each location. Graphs of heat units received each day throughout the growing season at the AZMET station on the Safford Agricultural Center are presented for 1988 and 1989.

Two wheat varieties were grown in Graham county as a follow -up to a previous field demonstration. AC79-97, a red wheat developed by the University of Arizona for the Safford area, yielded 6719 pounds per acre, compared with 6359 pounds per acre for Super-X. The protein differential made the crop values even more important than the yield comparison. AC79-97 produced $454 per acre, compared to $423 for Super-X. Using two year's data, AC79-97 produced 85 more pounds of protein per acre than Super-X, with a protein supplement replacement value of $28 per acre.

Short staple variety demonstrations were conducted in Pinal County in 1989 at the Prechel and Benedict Farms near Coolidge Az. Twelve varieties were included in the demonstration at Prechel Farms. Results from the analysis showed significant differences among varieties. Seedcotton yields in this test ranged from 4826 to 2844 lbs. acre⁻¹ for STV BR-110 and S-55 respectively. Seven varieties were included in the demonstration at Benedict Farms. Results from the analysis showed significant differences among varieties. Seedcotton yields in this test ranged from 4127 to 3530 lbs. acre⁻¹ for STV BR-110 and DP-50 respectively.

Yields by cutting are given for 22 varieties of alfalfa grown at the Safford Agricultural Center. Yields were good in 1989 with 9 of the varieties yielding over 10 tons per acre in 7 cuttings and the top variety yielding 12 tons per acre. Graphs are shown comparing yields by cutting between sister varieties of differing fall dormancy classes.

These yields coupled with bean values above 30 cents per pound have created considerable interest in growing dry beans in Cochise and parts of Graham county.

Abstract:
Short staple variety trials have been conducted for three years on the demonstration farm, at the Maricopa Agricultural Center. Twenty varieties, received from various seed companies, were entered into the test in 1989, 19 varieties in 1990, and 10 varieties in 1991. Yields ranged from 3353 to 4679 lbs. seedcotton/acre in 1989, 829 to 1428 lbs. lint/acre in 1990 and 1099 to 1246 lbs. lint/acre in 1991. Results form the statistical analysis showed significant differences among varieties for all three years. Differences among varieties in 1989 showed no clear trends with respect to maturity types. In 1990, those varieties that were medium to early season maturity types yielded higher than full season maturity types. The results in 1991 showed medium maturity types yielding in the highest ranking of the test without exception, while the performance of the full season maturity types was mixed. An additional test with narrow row spacing (30 inches) was included in 1991 with 5 varieties. Yields ranged from 947 to 1117 lbs. lint/acre. No significant differences were detected among varieties.

AbstractSelection of stem cell source is an important consideration for any physician planning an allogeneic haematopoietic cell transplant (HCT) and has evolved considerably since bone marrow (BM) was used as the stem cell source in the first successful allogeneic HCT in 1968 (Gatti et al. 1968). BM remained the only source of stem cells for the two decades that followed until experimental work demonstrating that peripheral blood (PB) stem cells can be enriched by pre-treatment with certain chemotherapy agents and haematopoietic growth factors (Richman et al. 1976; Socinski et al. 1988; Duhrsen et al. 1988) resulted in the first peripheral blood stem cell transplant in 1986 (Korbling and Freireich 2011). Alongside this, the recognition of cord blood (CB) as a rich source of stem cells (Prindull et al. 1978) led to the successful use of cord blood as a third stem cell source in allogeneic HCT in the late 80s (Gluckman et al. 1989).

Abstract:
We reported the first digital all-optical circuits using steady-state continuous-mode optically bistable devices which can be optically biased and held close to switchpoint and which give an incremental change of output sufficient to switch succeeding elements.1,2 These circuits have been demonstrated using cascadable elements constructed, respectively, from InSb (using electronic nonlinearities) and ZnSe refractive interferometric devices. This approach derives from the original (1979) observations of steady-state optical bistability3 and gain in an optical transphasor.4 Cascadability, fan-out, and fan-in are essential elements of an all-optical digital parallel computer in which, in the first instance, the opportunity provided for massive parallelism through the simplicity of optical interconnects is seen as one of the prime routes to be investigated toward realizing very high logic rates. With the requirement for restoring logic that there be gain in addition to regions of valid logic-0 and valid logic-1, we show that for digital optics this can be readily achieved by the technique of hold-and-switch. The use of off-axis address for the holding (or optical bias) and signal beams allows digital circuits to be constructed with the required features of restoring logic which can be infinitely extensible given sufficient supply of separately holding beams which can be construed as the power supplies of ensuing circuit elements.5

AlliedSignal Engines is addressing the critical concerns that are slowing commercialization of structural ceramics in gas turbines. The 331-200[CT] auxiliary power unit (APU) test bed features ceramic first-stage nozzles and blades. Fabrication of ceramic components provides manufacturing process demonstration scale-up to the minimum levels needed for commercial viability. On-site endurance tests are demonstrating component reliability, and additional field testing in APUs onboard commercial aircraft and stationary industrial engines is planned. Manufacturing scale-up activities showed significant progress during 1998. Subcontractors AlliedSignal Ceramic Components (Torrance, CA) and Kyocera Industrial Ceramics Corporation (Vancouver, WA) transitioned process refinements to full demonstration. Both suppliers achieved demonstration capability of ceramic nozzle production at the rate of 100 pieces/month. These suppliers are also developing fixed processes to fabricate ceramic integrally-bladed turbine rotor disks (“blisks”). Ceramic design technology advanced, and 776 hours engine operational testing of a ceramic blisk were successfully completed. Ceramic turbine nozzles were readied for planned field demonstrations, with 2.213 hours of engine endurance testing completed. High-temperature ceramic material tests in the cyclic oxidation test rigs were initiated, to establish functional operating temperature limits for current silicon nitride materials in gas turbine environments. This work was funded as part of the Turbine Engine Technologies Program by the U.S. Dept. of Energy Office of Transportation Technologies under Contract No. DE-AC02-96EE50454.

We present a system demonstration of a sequential deadlock recovery-based scheme [1] employing a circulating token to guarantee mutual exclusive access to deadlock buffers. This system allows us to evaluate the design and implementation of a multiprocessor network router using free-space optical interconnects. The system is designed based on our CMOS-SEED chip—OMNI [2] and GaAs-based chip—WARRP [3]. These two chips are employed to implement asynchronous optical token-based resource arbitration and deadlock recovery via channel preemption, respectively. With an external node controller, this experimental system is capable of demonstrating a high-performance bandwidth-efficient deadlock recovery-based multiprocessor network router.

The extraction of features of two or more consecutive scans from pictures is of great interest in today’s world. The technique of high order correlation to track dim targets has been developed at Colorado State University to accomplish this task.1 We have designed and had fabricated an optoelectronic chip (OEIC) though the MIT OPTOCHIP program as a first demonstration of this neural network. The chips have the ability to perform hard limit thresholding, store the outputs, and broadcast the outputs to the next stage. This paper will discuss the high order correlation neural network, and the optoelectronic chips designed as a demonstrator for the network.

As of June 1997, many interstate transmission pipelines are deciding whether or not to submit letters of intent, formally indicating they wish to participate in DOT’s Risk Management Demonstration. A joint industry regulatory quality action team developed the five documents for the demonstration: the Program Framework, the Risk Management Demonstration Standard, the Guidance on Performance Measures, the Communications Plan, and the Review Protocols and Criteria. By the August 1st 1997, twelve companies had applied to be accepted into the Risk Management Demonstration program and partner with DOT to show Congress that risk management is a safer and more efficient means of regulating the transportation of natural gas and liquids. Each company has submitted a unique range of RM activities. This paper summarizes the projects, discusses the common Program Wide and unique Project Specific performance measures that evolved from the consultative processes, and attempts to assess the initial success of the program.

The Office of Research and Development of the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) is sponsoring a project to develop and demonstrate an on-board condition monitoring system for freight trains. The objective of the system is to improve railroad safety and efficiency through continuous monitoring of mechanical components in order to detect defects before they cause breakdowns and accidents. The project, which commenced in June 1999, is part of the Rolling Stock Program Element in FRA’s Five-Year Strategic Plan for Railroad Research, Development and Demonstrations [1]. Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) and Wilcoxon Research (WR) designed and developed a prototype system in 2000. The prototype system was tested during the period Nov. 2000–Nov. 2001 on a vehicle provided by the Research and Tests Department at Norfolk Southern Corporation. A Revenue Service Demonstration is scheduled to commence in October 2003. The monitoring system will be installed on five coal hopper cars and tested in revenue service. Southern Company Service is providing the test cars. The train will operate on a Norfolk Southern line between a coalmine near Berry, AL and an electric power plant, located 35 miles southeast of Birmingham. The demonstration is scheduled to run for six months. The demonstration will showcase some of the latest technologies in wireless communications and railroad bearings. A tri-mode cell telephone will be used for data telemetry between the on-board monitoring system and a web-accessible database. The Timken Company has developed two innovative systems that will be deployed in the demonstration — a permanent magnet generator mounted inside a Class F railroad bearing and bearing health monitoring system featuring temperature and vibration sensors, a tachometer, a micro-controller and an RF transmitter mounted inside a Class F bearing.

Abstract:
From 1966 to1972, under an Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) license, Nuclear Fuel Services (NFS) reprocessed 640 metric tons of spent fuel at its West Valley, New York, facility, the only commercial spent fuel reprocessing plant in the U.S. The facility shut down in 1972, for modifications to increase its seismic stability and to expand its capacity. In 1976, without restarting the operation, NFS withdrew from the reprocessing business and returned control of the facilities to the site owner, the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA). The reprocessing activities resulted in about 2.3 million liters (600,000 gallons) of liquid high-level waste (HLW) stored below ground in tanks, other radioactive wastes, and residual radioactive contamination. The West Valley site was licensed by AEC, and then the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), until 1981, when the license was suspended to execute the 1980 West Valley Demonstration Project (WVDP) Act. The WVDP Act outlines the responsibilities of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), NRC, and NYSERDA at the site, including the NRC’s responsibility to develop decommissioning criteria for the site. The Commission published the final policy statement on decommissioning criteria for the WVDP at the West Valley site after considering comments from interested stakeholders. In that regard, the Commission prescribed the License Termination Rule (LTR) criteria for the WVDP at the West Valley site, reflecting the fact that the applicable decommissioning goal for the entire NRC-licensed site is compliance with the requirements of the LTR. This paper will describe the history of the site, provide an update of the status of the decommissioning of the site and an overview of the technical and policy issues facing Federal and State regulators and other stakeholders as they strive to complete the remediation of the site.
