Kamalak, Ihsan. "Continuity And Change In European Social Democracy: Reasserting Its Viability Within The Context Of Globalization." Phd thesis, METU, 2006. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/3/12607126/index.pdf.

Abstract:
The arguments concerning the unviability of Social Democracy at the beginning of new century within the context of globalization, and the accusations for its shift towards the New Right/Neo-Liberalism in the case of the Third Way has been criticized in a historico-critical way in this thesis. It is claimed that the insufficiency of these arguments arises from their analysis of Social Democracy merely through policies, or party politics, which have displayed great variety in the evolution of Social Democracy. Their shortage also stems from misunderstandings concerning Social Democracy before 1980, such as that it was against the market economy, that it was a working class ideology, and that it neglected the individual. Against the arguments of unviability and the accusations directed to Social Democracy, the thesis will assert that the theorization of Social Democracy should be based on its principles, such as democracy, progressiveness (movement) and social justice. By focusing on social democratic conception of social justice, this thesis defends that there is continuity within the tradition of Social Democracy, even in the face of globalization and in its encounters with the developments after 1980.

Abstract:
Based on preschool teachers experiences of democratic working methods in teaching of the youngest children this study aims to investigate the democracy mission. The study focuses on the possibilities and limitations teachers provide for children’s influence. The purpose of this study is to contribute with further understanding about democratic working methods in preschool. The Swedish preschool curriculum describes every preschool teacher’s obligation to create opportunities for all children to have influence over their everyday life andeducation. Semi-structured interviews were used in this qualitative study to answer the research questions. Four preschool teachers who are working in different preschools where interviewed. The collected empirical data was analyzed with support of a phenomenographic method approach, and from a socio-cultural perspective with focus on three central concepts, mediated artifacts, the proximal development zone and scaffolding. Results of the study show two categories that affect how preschool teachers can enable the youngest children’s influence, these are physical and social conditions. The preschool teacher’s way of being present, responsive and curious was found important for a democratic way of working within the social conditions. The physical conditions which deal with different aspects such as group size and the availability of materials are of great importance for giving children possibility to influence their everyday education. The preschool teachers express an understanding in their pedagogical approach, which is crucial for whether a democratic way of working is possible.

Abstract:
The real estate industry is facing a major change. The activity based working is promoted heavily by real estate companies, brokers and consultants as the future workplace. Knowledge and information is however limited. Many concepts have a tendency to get mixed up when companies on the market choose to formulate their own concepts. The research is neglected, and more focused on health and design. This thesis focuses on describing how the market may evolve the knowledge and how to implement the activity based working in the workplaces. Purpose The thesis aims to conduct a study to clarify the question of what activity based working means. The focus will be to examining the current work that is proceeding on the market but also explore if it would be possible to facilitate the implementation of the activity based working by using explorative factor analysis. Primary questions • How to define activity based working? • Which theories support the discussion and definition of activity based working? • Which concepts are available on the market today and how are these promoted? • Can the implementation of the activity based working be facilitated by using an activity based scale that measures needs and reactions in different workplace environments? Method The thesis consists of both a qualitative and a quantitative study. The qualitative study is based on interviews and a survey of how the market perceive the activity based working and with which keywords associated with the concept. In total, seven interviews were conducted. The quantitative survey consised of approximately 1000 surveys. Conclusions • Importance of a common definition and market approach for activity based working • Manage the self interest in the market to ensure a good development of activity based working • Activity based working is not just about design and floorlayouts. • Knowledge sharing should be prioritized • Organization, Technology and Premises are all very influencing aspects • The implementation requires a lot of time and effort • Through exploratory factor analysis, is it possible to define the driving forxes within the organization. • The workplace is no longer a specific place. It is an activity that can be performed in multiple places. Future research Future research should focus to continuing efforts on create an overall overview of the activity based working, but also develop clear and efficient processes for the implementation of the activity based working. Other interesting aspects are the international dimension of the work. The development with activity based working will in the future not only be applied on offices. To therefore explore how various industries work with the concepts and if there are any specific needs to develop in the future. Definition In the analysis chapter the author presents a comprehensive definition of activity based working which is developed with the support by the qualitative and quantitative research: “Based on the activities that occur in the workplace, teadership, facilities, and technology are customized to effectively and in a structured way maximize the benefits and value of the work that the individuals performs”

Abstract:
This study examines the intersections of class, social exclusion and education policy during New Labour’s time in office, with the bulk of its focus falling upon secondary schooling. Working against wider political, academic and popular effacements and recodifications of class, and with a particular focus upon its marginalisation within both political and academic discourses of social exclusion, both concepts are mapped out in ways which allow them to be understood in tandem and as rooted within the structures, processes and relations of society and its constitutive institutions. Qualitative in approach, and set within the ebb and flow of long running educational struggles heavily imbued with issues of class, the study uses semistructured interviews with 21 education professionals to explore the impact of the current market-based education policy regime upon the institutional structures, processes and professional practices which confront working class pupils on a daily basis. In turn, it examines the ways in which working class pupils and the shaping of their educational experiences are understood by those trained and charged to teach in an education system intimately bound to the re/production of class inequalities and social exclusion. Parallel to this, the project uses biographically orientated interviews with 17 working class young people in order to explore the variegated ways in which class and social exclusion intersect within their schooling careers as they are shaped along shifting axes through, within, and against the kinds of contexts and conditions mapped out by education professionals. The study provides key insights into the contemporary circulation of class within schools: invoked through crosscutting narratives of ‘ability’, ‘deficiency’ and ‘social constructivism’ by education professionals caught within systemic pressures to perform, and a ubiquitous facet of working class educational experience which is continually stirring, settling, straining to be re/made, and wrought through shifting layers and dimensions of in/exclusion.

McCafferty, Patricia. "Working the 'third way' : New Labour, employment relations and Scottish devolution." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2004. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/1537/.

Abstract:
Labour’s election victory in 1997 was heralded as a new era, the dawn of a Third Way, a novel attempt to chart a unique political course overcoming the perceived limitations of both New Right and Old Labour. In this thesis, I explore that era of New Labour generally and, in particular, the impact of the Third Way on working lives. Key to my analysis is New Labour’s attempt to synthesise oppositional interests, in particular those of capital and labour. This involves a crucial rhetoric of flexibility, competitiveness and partnership. My research explores the rhetoric of New Labour in relation to the reality of this new force in power. It does this by: drawing out key features in the development of New Labour, especially its relation to Old Labour; examining central elements of New Labour ideology; arguing that Scotland should be seen as central to the transition from Old to New Labour; utilising a case study of industrial relations developments in a major electronics factory in the West of Scotland and, to a lesser extent, key developments in public sector employment. My main finding is that where New Labour’s ideology promises positive benefits, the form of its implication has negative impacts for workers. Since I take New Labour as a process, my thesis concludes with a more speculative exploration of possible future developments, both in relations to New Labour’s role in them, and their possible impact on the New Labour project.

Brinks, Hanne, and Prince Johnson. "The agile way of working within the manufacturing industry : An exploratory study investigating how to lead the adoption of the “Agile way of working” within the manufacturing industry." Thesis, Högskolan i Jönköping, Internationella Handelshögskolan, 2019. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hj:diva-43912.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Based upon two important phenomena within the manufacturing industry an upcoming agile era is being proposed within this thesis, those phenomena have shown a shift in the focus of attention for companies within the manufacturing industry in the past. The first phenomenon is being referred to as “physical product development saturation” and the second phenomenon is “lean saturation”, which are introduced in order to give importance to the aspiration for a new emphasis to remain competitiveness and create more value within the manufacturing industry. Where in the past the focus was on physical product development, this in order to enhance and or invent new products. This was followed by the need for a more efficient way of working by eliminating wastes (Lean), although both phenomena are about to reach their limits with respect to the extra value they (can) create. The forthcoming agile era allows for a new way of value creation, this by adaptivity. This introduces the potential of a new way to create value, this being done by the agile way of working. Purpose: The research in this thesis aimed to find an answer to the question of how companies within the manufacturing industry could adopt an agile way of working in order to allow for a new way of value creation. Method: This research was approached by conducting a qualitative study. Eleven semi-structured interviews were conducted, with companies from the manufacturing, IT and consultancy industries. The collected data was then sorted and analysed systematically to generate knowledge and draw upon conclusions to answer the proposed research questions. Conclusion: In order to successfully adopt the agile way of working, within an organization in the manufacturing industry, the challenge is to create awareness and an understanding of the value and benefits an agile way of working could create, especially for the middle-management. This could be done by explaining an agile way of working as an extension to Lean. Furthermore, the tools & processes of the agile way of working could be experimented with in order to start “doing agile”, this finally resulting in creating an understanding of the potential power of an agile way of working. Whereas, an agile way of working is being characterized by an encouraging, transparent culture led by a servant leadership style by making use of empowerment to stimulate value creation. Ultimately, resulting in adopting an agile way of working and achieving “becoming agile”.

Abstract:
A challenge for all organizations is to establish and encourage the business's continuous development, and its products and services. To create an innovative environment where co-workers, customers, and other people's insights can be collected, engagement and transparency are needed. Polestar wanted to create a business and service design process that supported courage, learning, and fast development. The objective of this thesis is to evaluate and analyze the Design Sprint process and implement it into Polestar's way of working. A Design Sprint is a four-day process for answering critical business questions through design, prototyping, and testing ideas on users. By working together in a team and in a structured way, you can eliminate endless discussions and meetings and compress months of work into a period of 4 days. A prototype was created in Miro, an online collaborative whiteboard tool, that worked as a step-by-step guide for running a Design Sprints. The prototype was tested by running two separate Design Sprints on two different projects. The sprints were done remotely, and both sprints resulted in prototypes that we tested on test users. The Design Sprint process proved to be a highly effective process for developing a prototype to test on real users. The Design process was well-received by Polestar and the employees that were involved in the testing of Design Sprints.

The analysis of the ballast and dimension of the Judiciary while democratic instance and of how the opening of its access and the revision of its role can contribute to the exercise of democracy were the nodal points of the work evolved, which consolidates its theoretical basis on the theory of communicative action of Habermas, seeking to demonstrate, in a first attempt to experiment its categories to the praxis which results from the inter action of the Special Judiciaries with the Consumer´s Defense Code (Law 9099/95 and Law 8078/90), how they can perform as instruments of democracy in judicial public sphere. In the development of the subject we pose the process in such a manner as to reproduce the enormous differences and conflicts found out in social environment, and as a conductor of necessities and social expectations, also finding a peculiar form of society´s political participation through the Judiciary, argumentative stage for the reaching of agreements, which may express a result of a deliberative but not decisive nature. Also it was sought to demonstrate how process can be put into action so as to permit, within the scope of that institutionalized sphere, a greater effectiveness of fundamental rights, the equalization of syntonies which would permit a reduction of judicial inequalities inherent in social reality, operating the transformation of legal equality to material one, at the procedural level, and how, reflexively, this can reach concrete pan- prosecutional results. It was also noticed by the dynamics of the two micro-systems and their results the potential capacity of propitiating the affectiveness of alterity sentiment, albeit tenuous, of those auto-referential subsystems referred to by Habermas, which oppose society as supreme forces of domination in present days. It was also sought to unveil a new interaction among the Judiciary, democracy and social participation, mainly as collectivized individualities, which might potentialize the resistances and create short cuts to the accomplishment of the values which permeate the contexture of their longing for equality and dignity. In a disbelieving world crowded with complexities and multiple problems, which, more and more, globally affect the destinies and the remotest realities, any path leading to reflection and criticism, even through the re-reading of a Power of State, creates, itself, a finality, by putting on the stage a public discussion of the legitimate expectations of society.

Abstract:

This study in sociology is the result of a MFS-project, sponsored by SIDA. The ideal in Argentina, at least for the upper classes, has for a long time been the man as bread-winner, the one who supports the family and the woman as the home-maker, the one who stays at home, taking care of house and children. Working-class women have always been working even though it has not been shown in the statistics. This feminist study in sociology is about what influence Argentinean women in their way towards emancipation but also about patriarchy as their biggest obstacle. The study is based on theories based on that in the world there is a world-order controlled by men. Another important theory is that it is easier for working women to reach emancipation in comparison with house-wives, because working women develop themselves in an economic as well as on a personal level. Additionally I went to the field in the Buenos-Aires area in Argentina during October until November 2000 where I did eleven interviews with Argentinean working mothers. I want to emphasize that as the interviews are eight years old, I have chosen not to integrate them very much through the essay, but instead showing them in a special chapter. I have, therefore, not given the interviews a central role in the essay. Instead, I emphasize the theories in the essay. The method I am using is qualitative method, with deep-interviews, the hermeneutic method and of course comparing theories from other authors. The conclusions I have come up with mean that the post-modern feminism is an important tool to understand the diversity of women and womens´ different conditions around the world. By realising these differences it would become easier to challenge the widespread patriarchy in Argentina. Argentinean women could reach emancipation by labour work and education that contribute to development on an economic and on a personal level. Even doing a voluntary work would contribute to this self-esteem and consciousness that are crucial for women on their way towards emancipation.

Lamons, Brent. "Habit, Education, and the Democratic Way of Life: The Vital Role of Habit in John Dewey's Philosophy of Education." Scholar Commons, 2012. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/4118.

Full text
Abstract:
Some have claimed that John Dewey was one of few thinkers that developed an educational theory that is comparable to Plato.1 Dewey did something that William James and Charles Sanders Peirce did not do; he applied Pragmatism and the Pragmatic method to the study of education. The main tasks of this dissertation are as follows: (1) Argues that habit is the most important and unifying element in John Dewey's philosophy of education, (2) Critically investigates habit's fundamental role in his democratic project of reconstructing culture toward establishing and sustaining the democratic way of life. In addition to the latter points, this project shows how and why the critique of habits and cultural values is central to Dewey's philosophy of education and reveals how important the process of unlearning is to the continual development of human possibilities. The latter tasks will be carried out by first reviewing the historical influences on Dewey's thinking with regard to habit and surveying secondary literature that has dealt with his position on habit. Second, the Deweyan conception of the nature of habit and the formation of habit in immediate experience will be explored. Third, Dewey's educational philosophy will be examined. Education, which Dewey asserts to be Democracy's midwife, should produce growth that is characterized by perpetual reconstruction of habits of thought and practical conduct. Fourth, in investigating habit, individuality, and community, a close reading of Dewey's position on habit highlights that the political enterprise of education and the transactional process of learning are cultural projects that demand ongoing re-evaluation and refinement community values. The conclusion will argue how important the ongoing improvement of a cultural instrumentalism, through schooling, is to sustaining a steady path of cultural self-correction. For Dewey, schooling, in cultivating the requisite habits, serves the crucial social function of developing and recasting new forms of the Democratic way of life toward creating a "Great Community." Dewey had a persistent concern for the ethos of the Democratic way of life but feared that the stultification of an individual's plasticity of habit will inevitably bring on the "social arterial sclerosis" of the public. Like his pragmatism, experimentalism, and instrumentalism, the Democratic way of life, for Dewey, is an attitude. This attitude, like any attitude, is shaped and channeled by a force as powerful as gravity, habit.

The discussion about (in) equality appears in the social aspect of the States, specially those wich implemented a democratic proposal. Equality is a presupposition of democracy and also projects itself in the criminal process. Despite affirming the equality between the parts, it is identified that the material inequalities are not compesated inthe public process, mainly in the Latin American societies. The reality is aggravated in the context Latin America when, both Criminal Law ans the Criminal Process, have as its main function Mass Control, of a Patronage system, oriented to contain the possible unsatisfactions of great number of excluded individuals. The main objective of this paper is to understand the participation of the accused individual in the Criminal Process inserted in the predominantly accusatory model, trying to cope with the guarantee of formal equality and the material inequality, so that it effectively reassure the guarantee of access to the Criminal Law to all citizens. The research is based on Teoria do Garantismo Penal ( Criminal Guaranteeing Theory) by Luigi Ferrajoli, that situates the contradictory and the ample defense with jurisdictional technics normatively accepted, assuring the accused, above all the excluded from the neoliberal projects, equality in participation int the formation of the truth to be enclosed by the final provision.

The Disney International College Program (ICP) is an internship program sponsored by The Walt Disney Company, in which foreign university and college students travel to the United States, to spend their summer vocation working on the Walt Disney World Resort on Florida. The ICP has become very popular among Brazilian university students. Every year, almost thirty thousands of them apply for this program, though only about eight hundred manage to become a cast member. While on the program these youngsters develop a Disney Identity that is joined to their self. This research's goal is to explore the ICP role on the participants` life, showing its effects on these youngsters self-construction. In addition, we have aimed to investigate how ICP Alumni (people who took part of the ICP) manage to sustain their Disney identity, even after leaving the program. In order to meet our goal we have developed a qualitative case study, in which the case studied was the ICP alumni identity. Moreover, through our literature review we have acknowledged that someone’s self lays in the capacity to keep a particular narrative going on. Hence, our data was collected and analyzed through a narrative inquire method. Athwart our study, we have found out that the Walt Disney Company does an efficient job in convincing these youngsters that their mission and values are very important and thus, the ICP alumni become to praise the Disney Company and brand. We have also observed the existence of an actual Disney alumni community bonded by principles, ideas and consumption.

Abstract:

The title of this essay is deliberately provocative. It aims at drawing attention on the reality of Christian churches full everyday – not only on sundays – with people who everyday die from hunger. In the Congo-Zaire. Behind the image of crowded churches, I see the complex reality of Christianity, and behind the image of empty stomachs, I have in view the complex reality of poverty, oppression, violence and death. It is paradoxical that those two realities grow together. This essay explores the sources of that paradox, going back to the first encounter of the people of the old Kongo Kingdom, and later on Congo-Zaire, with Christianity. It analyzes the relationships between Christianity and the poor throughout the history of the Congo-Zaire. It examines the message of salvation brought by Christianity and how it is related to the people’s conditions of life. The conclusion is tough, but unavoidable. First, Christianity during colonial times – which I call missionary Christianity – in the Congo-Zaire did not side with the poor. It served the interests of the powerful, to safeguard its own interests. It despised the way of life of the autochthonous and destroyed their identity. Second, Christianity today in the Congo-Zaire – which I call postindependence Christianity – struggles with the heritage of the colonial past, but it basically continues to function following the same model. We still live in the colonial settings. Therefore, this for me is the key to resolving the paradox. Following the insights of postcolonial theories, turn the page of colonial Christianity, move towards what I call a “postcolonial Christianity.” That postcolonial Christianity should be informed by the African way of life (hence re-appropriating the values of the autochthonous) and rooted in the preferential option for the poor, which is the main principle at the heart of liberation theology. There lies a great challenge: how to actualize that postcolonial Christianity in the Congo-Zaire?

Abstract:
The purpose of this review is to find out in which ways aesthetically learning could affect on children with dyslexia. The study had also a cause to search for the different ways for pedagogues to work with dyslexia-children and find out how they throughout aesthetically learning could foster these children. I was very interested in seeing if this method could help these dyslectic children. I have used former research, literature and even interviews with 3 pedagogues out on the schools to get wider knowledge from this particular topic.

Abstract:
This paper investigates advantages and disadvantages of working agile in an innovation process. Both agile and innovation are two words that can be seen as buzzwords. However, they are two words that in one way or another can make a company successful. The research question was tackled from three different angles; academic theory, expert interviews within the topic, and interviews with employees of a market research and marketing consultancy company that helps their clients with different kinds of innovation processes. The market research and marketing consultancy company in question was also where the practical part of the paper took place. The paper deals with theories from various academic articles that all center around agile, innovation or both. However, additional insights from books, blogs and websites are used. The method used includes semi-structured online interviews. The paper concludes with several advantages and disadvantages of agile working in an innovation project and also puts forward three recommendations: “Continue to recommend the agile way of working in innovation projects”, “Make sure the clients involve and prioritize their customers in their innovation process” and “The digital B2C service companies’ management should provide and prioritize its designated team a clear guideline”. The recommendations are meant for the company where the practical part took place. However, the recommendations are written and analysed to be valuable for digital B2C Service companies in general as well. This is since recommendations are based on academic theories and expert interviews, which both deal with the research question from a general point of view

Abstract:
This study deals with play and the importance of meaning of play in the learning process. The aim is to look in to and analyze four preschool teacher´s beliefs and views about the importance of play for children´s learning and development. The study looks at two different preschools, one based on Reggio Emilia- and the other on Montessori- pedagogy, and the aim is to compare the different views and ways of working that the preschool educators have. The theoretical basis for this study is both rooted in a socio-cultural and constructivist perspective, and deals with the relationships between theoretical concepts mean as play, learning, way of working and pedagogy. The study is based on qualitative research methods that consist of interviews and participant observations. The person’s participants in the study consisted of four active preschool educators, who work in two different preschools. The results of the investigation show that the educators have similar views on the importance of play for the children´s learning process, and this also applies to their way of working. In the interviews, they emphasize the importance of observing the child, and to start from the child´s own interests and the free play, when working with the children. But the implementation of their work differed in the sense that the Reggio Emilia- preschool educators work with theme works that extended over longer periods while the Montessori- preschool educators worked with free play.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to gain an understanding of an agile way of working at an IT organization in a context of a surrounding and otherwise manufacturing industrial organization, when it comes to software development projects. Thus the study aims to answer whether to what extent agile methodologies are manifested at an IT organization, what is demanded of the IT organization in order to follow agile values and principles, and whether it is possible to develop software according to agile values and principles in an IT organization in the above mentioned context. The study has been carried out as a case study at a case company where an IT organization, within a larger organization, was investigated. The study consisted of a pre-study, a literature review and an empirical study followed by analysis of the gathered data. The pre-study aimed to give the authors relevant insights into the case company as well as to the available academic literature. During the pre-study eight initial interviews were conducted, at the case company, among project managers, methodology experts and group managers. The pre-study was used in order to define and refine the scope of this study. From this the authors investigated literature relevant to their findings in the pre-study and to the scope. The literature review was used to formulate the theoretical framework of this study. The theoretical framework is mainly based on academic journals complemented by various publications and books. The empirical study was conducted by investigations of four software development projects, at the case company. Here nine interviews were conducted among the project managers, customers of the projects, and with managers of the IT organization. The empirical study have then been analyzed using the theoretical framework in order to form the conclusions of this report. The theory presents benefits, drawbacks and demands when it comes to agile methodologies in software development. The importance of support from the IT department, and from the customer, to a project is especially highlighted in literature. The empirical study presents findings of both agile and non-agile projects operating in the above mentioned organization. Several advantages and drawbacks have been identified regarding agile projects in the organization. Also hinders for an agile way of working, in the form or organizational demands, extensive processes, limited support and customer commitment have also been seen. While benefits regarding agile projects can be identified, in the context of an IT organization functioning within a larger industrial manufacturing organization, several drawbacks and hinders are also prominent. The analysis show agile values and principles manifested in the IT organization agile practices are harder to identify. It is also seen that an organization should strive for agility on several organizational levels in order to support an agile way of working. Regarding the surrounding organization an agile way of working is seen to be possible. Furthermore several benefits are identified, for a customer, when it comes to agile projects. However agile methodologies are also seen to be demanding when it comes to time, commitment and external support. Putting this in the context of an IT organization developing business support systems for a surrounding organization the benefits, while still prominent, can be further discussed.

Abstract:
This essay is about the change of the Swedish party Socialdemokraterna (S). It is a very current subject, since many political newspapers write about that the party moves into the political middle. Apparently the party is not what it used to be and that is what this essay will explore and analyze. My purpose is to explore what ideal type answers best to the Social democrats change. The chosen ideal types are neo-liberalism, reformist socialism and the third way. And the materials I use are political programs from 1990, 2001 and 2013. To achieve my purpose I’ve chosen two different methods: 1. Content analysis 2. Idea analysis. Each of them has been very useful and to combine them has proved efficient. The results of the content analysis show that the party in 2001 and 2013 is using a different vocabulary than in 1990. The results of the idea analysis are that the political program from 2013 show that some of the ideas are divergent. For example, a traditional social democratic value is that the working hours should be shorter. But in 2013, the party doesn’t suggest shorter working days and weeks.

Grant, Stephen David. "A qualitative study of the way in which male carers of spouses with a working age dementia experience and perceive their role." Thesis, University of Leicester, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/4143.

Full text
Abstract:
Purpose: The number of people with dementia in the UK is known to be increasing. A minority of this group will develop a working age dementia where onset will be prior to 65 years of age. It is suggested that many people with a dementia will be cared for on an informal basis by family or friends. This informal caring role has been shown to be psychologically and physically harmful. If people are to continue to offer the current level of input it is essential that their needs are understood and that they receive the appropriate support from services. Method: A systematic literature search was carried out to determine what was known about caring for those with a dementia. Whilst there was some reference to gender differences in terms of coping styles little of the research had looked at how male carers needs might differ from female carers. To address this gap in the knowledge base a qualitative study was carried out using interpretive phenomenological analysis. The aim of the study was to explore how seven men whose wives developed a working age dementia experienced and perceived their caring role. Results: Five themes emerged from the data: facing up to dementia, challenges to male gander stereotypes, issues of control, using psychological defences and loss. The most significant of these in terms of coping seemed to be perceived control. Whilst the one which appeared to have the most direct impact on the participants was that of loss and the grief process that this brought about. Many of the research findings mapped onto the model of caregiver stress developed by Pearlin et al. (1990) Conclusion: This study helped to expand the current level of understanding about the specific needs of male carers whose wives developed a working age dementia. Furthermore, it highlighted the importance of perceived control over the way in which these men experienced their carer role.

"Peace and conflict resolution activities in support of strengthening civil society's democratic capacity in South Korea : case studies on three civil society organisations working on peace and conflict resolution in South Korea." Thesis, University of Bradford, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10454/5488.

Full text
Abstract:
In the last fifteen years, conflict resolution, a collaborative, problem-solving approach to social conflicts, was introduced to new democracies in an attempt to develop civil society's capacity for conflict management (Mayer, 2000). Conflict resolution provides people with an opportunity to advocate effectively for their own interests in a non-violent, constructive manner through systematic educational efforts, skills trainings, dialogue initiatives, and mediation practices (Mayer, 2000). It empowers people to address, manage, and transform difficulties and antagonism into a source of positive social change and, thus, change people's negative psychological responses to conflicts (Bush & Folger, 1994). In this view, conflict resolution in new democracies' civil society provides citizens as well NGO practitioners with the skills and opportunities to practice how to express and resolve differences in a safe and constructive environment (Shonholtz, 1997). In an effort to provide additional information about civil society's conflict resolution practices and their affect in new democracies, this dissertation examines the existing efforts of South Korean civil society organisations to promote conflict resolution methodologies. Specifically, three organisations are examined to understand better South Korean civil society's response to PCR issues. Furthermore, by closely examining these three civil society organisations, this dissertation aims to explore what affect increased awareness and engagement in conflict resolution methodologies have on the democratic quality of civil society.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis presents the development, implementation and evaluation of a methodological framework for a narrative based approach to practice development and person-centred care in residential aged care settings. The study is underpinned by practice development, person-centred care and narrative methodologies. Narrative focuses on a way of being, paying attention to past present and future, and also as a way of doing, as the means through which action is understood and made meaningful. Carried out between 2010 and 2014 and underpinned by theories of narrative inquiry, person-centred care, practice development and action research, this study is guided by the philosophical perspectives of Heidegger (1962). Forty six interviews, collected as part of a national research programme, (Person-Centred Care Practice Development Programme 2007-2010), were analysed for key themes by myself, four focus groups of 12 clinical nurse managers and two independent experts. Themes were also derived from a focus group of eight residents who explored person-centredness and narrative. Combined, this analyses led to a single set of themes that were used to develop a Framework of Narrative Practice. This framework consists of four pillars, prerequisites, care processes, care environment and narrative aspects of care. The framework further includes three narrative operational elements, narrative knowing, narrative being and narrative doing. Working with the four foundational pillars and the three narrative elements enabled staff to ‘work in a storied way’ and provide person-centred outcomes and a narrative informed philosophy of care for older adults. Using an action research approach with work-based learning groups, the framework was implemented in two residential care settings that were comprised of 37 residents and 38 staff. Three action cycles (1) narrative practice and culture identification, (2) developing narrative practice and (3) working in a storied way emerged during the implementation. Using these action cycles, staff developed action plans to address areas where changes could improve practice and quality of life for the residents. These plans included communication/intercommunication, homely environment, having more going on with and for the residents and meals and mealtimes. By taking account of their biography, the framework confirmed the identity of older people. Three key areas emerged, however, that warranted further conceptualisation. These were, how staff and residents responded to change (narrative being), development of shared understandings (narrative knowing) and intentional action (narrative doing).

Abstract:
Background The Clinical Research Nurse (CRN) workforce has developed alongside a growing National Health Service (NHS) research infrastructure. However, evidence suggests this workforce is isolated with minimal awareness in acute trusts of the work of CRNs. There is a lack of evidence concerning how best to structure CRN teams within acute trusts. Aim The overall aim of the study was to explore how the CRN workforce is currently organised within NHS Acute trusts, to explore the experience of CRNs working within acute NHS Trusts and determine the most effective way to structure this workforce. Methods A sequential mixed methods design was used. Phase 1 comprised a national online survey sent to Lead CRNs in acute NHS trusts and a statistical analysis of National Institute of Health Research study recruitment data over the period 2010-2016. The survey response rate was 77% (111/144). Survey analysis used descriptive statistics and thematic analysis. Phase 2 comprised four purposively sampled organisational case studies which included 14 semistructured interviews and 4 focus groups. Qualitative data were thematically analysed using NVIVO 10. Findings Over the last fifteen years the CRN workforce has evolved in a reactive and inconsistent manner, shaped by local and external influences. The effect of reviewing CRN workforce structures was found to have a statistically significant effect on recruitment into interventional studies. Lead CRNs have an important role in providing leadership and direction for the workforce and a link to clinical nursing colleagues. The current NHS climate means research delivery can be difficult and often overlooked as it is not perceived as a priority. The level of support and understanding from clinical nursing colleagues impacts CRN experience. Recommendations - Organisations should ensure the CRN workforce is well led with the establishment of a Lead CRN post. - A CRN workforce model is proposed to provide a suggested framework. - Work should be undertaken to address the lack of understanding of research and the CRN role. - R&D Departments should consider the timing of a full review of their CRN workforce. - Work is needed to understand the role of the emerging non nursing workforce within research. Conclusion Development of well-structured CRN teams supported by a local leader with formal links into internal stakeholders is key. Improving integration of the CRN workforce into existing organisational structures and processes will raise the profile of research and may facilitate a longer term shift in attitudes.

Millward, Melanie. "Addiction beliefs : do staff working in substance misuse and mental health services view clients with co-existing mental health and substance use problems in the same way?" Thesis, University of Leicester, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/8590.

Full text
Abstract:
Previous research has indicated addiction beliefs differ in staff working in Mental Health and Substance Misuse Services, but limited attention has been paid to this in the UK. Given the reported prevalence of clients who present to both types of service with co-existing mental health and substance misuse problems, and recent government guidance on the management of these clients within existing NHS services, the current study was developed. The aim was to explore whether any differences in beliefs about addiction existed between staff working in NHS Mental Health and Substance Misuse services in the UK, and identify any barriers/levers to joint-working between services to support these clients. Staff working in Mental Health, Substance Misuse and Dual Diagnosis services across five NHS Trusts were recruited to participate in a survey study. Participants completed questionnaires designed to identify their beliefs about addiction to three substances (alcohol, cannabis and heroin) and were also asked to report their opinions about current/potential barriers/levers to these services working jointly to support clients with co-existing mental health and substance use problems. A significant difference between Mental Health and Substance Misuse staff ratings on the ‘Addiction Belief Inventory’ was observed; staff in each type of service held different views about addiction on the following subscales: ‘chronic disease’, ‘responsibility for actions’, ‘responsibility for recovery’ and ‘genetic basis’. Interaction effects between service type and demographic information were also explored. The hypothesis that staff would report significantly different beliefs about different substances was also supported. Staff comments about barriers and levers to joint-work were analysed thematically. Given that the current study suggested that addiction beliefs differ on a number of elements across services, and substances; the implications for intervention and joint-working are discussed in light of previous research and suggestions by clinicians. A full critical appraisal of the study was included.

Purpose - The purpose of this study is to investigate and understand which significantparameters affect OTD within an ATO company, and furthermore develop a model which wouldenhance proactive work in order to achieve a higher OTD.Design/methodology/approach - The data is primarily of qualitative nature, employing semistructuredinterviews and workshop, with backup from quantitative production data. Anabductive approach was applied by iterating and aligning findings with relevant literature andtheory. These mixed methodologies created a triangulation of data, which through our analysishelp with the validation of our conclusions.Findings - Through our findings we can conclude that significant parameters which lowers OTDfor an ATO company can be found all through the supply chain. For this thesis and its model, parameters were chosen based on their ability to be quantified. For ABB GA Products, we found36 significant parameters as well as a systematic approach for an ATO company to iteratively gothrough them to investigate which orders are affected by which flags. Through this approach anATO company should be able to work more proactively towards higher OTD.Research limitations/implications - This thesis is conducted through a case study at ABB GAProducts only, which should be considered when using the results for further research.Practical implications - Specifies a logical scheme to classify risk of delayed orders.Originality/value - Advances theory in production and operations management regardingperformance measurement, towards a more proactive approach of measuring reactive KPI’s

Abstract:
After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the process of creating new Eastern European states coincided with their democratic development. This study highlights how Moldova is trying to present itself as a substantive democratic state, while it is still in fact acting as a formal one, which influences its credibility on the international arena. The process of democratization in Eastern Europe is different than in the rest of the world due to its lack of prior experience with democratic governance. Taking into consideration this fact, it will be first conducted a brief analysis of the implementation of the democratic system in Eastern European states, such as Ukraine, Belarus, and Moldova. Afterwards, as Moldova is placed between two attractors: Russia and the EU, it will be assessed how the relations with these actors influence the type of democracy present in Moldova. It will be also taken into consideration the fact that by having a weak democracy, Moldova is a source of insecurity in the region, diminishing its international credibility. The main finding of this thesis is that the formal democracy in Moldova makes it a less reliable actor in the international community, especially concerning the EU, with negative effects on the state’s aspirations for future European accession. This research aims to create a better understanding of the process of democratization in Moldova.

Abstract:
This study deepens within the topic boundaryless work and the aim is to visualize the experiences of, and the attitudes towards, that way of working. This is relevant since boundaryless work is becoming more and more common due to the technology that implements in to our daily work. Through a qualitative case study and nine interviews with employees at the case company, empirical data was gathered on their experiences and attitudes towards the way of working. The respondents were divided in to three subgroups based on their role at the company. As it turned out there were connections between how the respondents from the different subgroups experienced the way of working and there were vital differences between the roles. The attitudes on the other hand were similar regardless of the work roles, though the respondents that noticed flexible work the least were more critical to it. Positive attitudes do not mean that underlying issues or difficulties should be overlooked, since these can become more critical later on.

This work aims at studying the Popular Democratic Strategy, understood as the main strategic discussion built by the working class in Brazil after the bourgeois counterrevolution. Besides, the project is still one of the most important collective tools used by them nowadays. It emerged from the popular syndical worker movement -- which Chasin (2000) calls the mass democratic movement in the context of the exhaustion of the dictatorship established in 1964. Considering that there are just a few works on this theme and its present relevance under neoliberal regimes, this study will present a theoretical research on the Popular Democratic Strategy cited above. We take the work of Florestan Fernandes as a main reference, because of his contributions on the formulation of the program (from the first half of 1970 until 1990). After all, his works deal with the construction of a revolution inside and outside the order, with democratic centrality. This work is divided in two sessions. The first one consists of a study on the foundations of Brazils social formation, the constitution of social classes and the pattern of capitalist transformation that prevailed here. The second one analyzes the program of a national grassroots revolution, from its programmatic genesis in 1970 to the governmental consolidation through the democracy of cooptation in 2000.

Abstract:
Today organizations need different strategies and models that can help them to lead and being led to success. Throughout the years there have been discussions about what leadership should be enforced within organizations to increase efficiency. People have different views about what an efficient leadership should look like and who it should be conducted by. Perceptions about who should lead has contributed to that men gained support in achieving leader positions, but has on the other hand led to difficulties for women to reach leader positions. Today it can be perceived strange and unfamiliar for both men and women to see a woman in a leading position. This study takes a qualitative approach. We have interviewed eight leaders in the security business and have thereby been able to apprehend which abilities, practice and style of leadership the study participants are applying in their leading. The analysis of the interviews has shown both similarities and differences in between the male and the female participants. We can also conclude that women face greater resistance in their leadership, while men don’t experience the resistance, which aggravates women to climb higher in leading positions.

Abstract:
Image-building includes the art forms sculpture, painting, drawing and graphics. One argument for the importance of image-building is the development of visual “readingand writing skills”. In this study we’re going to illuminate image-building within the early childhood perspective. The purpose of our study is to find out how two preschool teachers work with image-building and how they link this to the preschool curriculum. The preschool curriculum writes about the different forms of expression; art, singing and music, dance and movement as a tool to create and communicate. We have used qualitative approach with observation and interviews. The result shows the study’s participants answers in the final interviews and in the discussion we draw parallels between the answers and the curriculum.

Abstract:
Sexual abuse is a global issue that can result in psychosocial consequences for the on that has been abused. Statistics show that girls and boys in high school age are among the group that are most vulnerable to sexual abuse and studies shows that high school counselors have or should have resources that can help students that has been abused. The purpose of this study is, through interviews study the work of high school counselors regarding students that have been sexually abused but also how they work to prevent sexual abuse. We also wanted to investigate if there are any differences in the mode of work depending on gender. Our study is based on interviews of six high school counselors that we interviewed in person at their work place. To analyze our data, we took help from previous research on the subject but also theories about action space, sexuality and gender. Our result shows that the high school counselors work in different ways to help students that have been sexually abused but there are no specific guidelines on how the high school counselors are supposed to work to prevent sexual abuse and deal with students that have been abused. Their main job is to be a support system for the student if she or he need to talk to somebody and guide the student through the process of pressing chargers or contacting different authorities. It became evident in our study that prevention and the way of dealing with sexual abuse needs to improve in the high school counselors’ work, which most of the school counselors said themselves. None of the counselors said that they work differently based on the student´s gender but half of them used the word boy when describing the perpetrator and girl when describing the victim. With the help of our theory we could see that there is a perception in society where the male gender is often seen as the perpetrator and that this perception affects how high school counselors see and talk about sexual abuse. This perception makes it also more difficult for boys to talk about sexual abuse and also realize when they have been victims of sexual abuse.

The purpose of the study was to investigate what strategies experienced teachers use and how they work for integration into classroom teaching for newly arrived students. The study is qualitative and based on six semistructured interviews with experienced teachers in a municipality in northern Sweden and all teachers have worked with at least five newly arrived students in their careers. The results showed that the teachers received their strategies to teach new arrivals through experience and experience that they did not receive enough education. Teachers advocate the use of strategies such as image support, ICT, modella and social interaction. The result is in line with the research on how teachers' work for integration will be addressed. The conclusion was that successful strategies and integration work correlate with each other.

Abstract:
The 1st of July 2018 the consent law was implemented in Sweden, which among other things meant a revision in the Rape Act. From requirements of violence, threat, constraint or exploitation of a particularly vulnerable situation for criminal liability to today's necessary prerequisite lack of free will. The debate on consent regulation has been on for a long time in Sweden, with the main reason for not being introduced earlier is because of the risk that focus on the plaintiff in investigations and trials would be too big. The purpose of this report is hence to investigate how the way of working among the criminal investigators has been altered since the change in the law, and what difficulties and possibilities they experience in their work. This have been studied through five semi-structured interviews with investigators employed by the Swedish police authority with the requirement that they should have been investigating rape cases both before and after the change in the law. Five main themes arose through the study's results; Evidence, Legal certainty, Education, The role of the plaintiff’s counsel and Frozen fright. In short, the investigators considered that their way of working was generally unchanged, but with other types of questions in questioning of the plaintiff and suspect. They perceived the new prerequisite as easy to interpret, however, the implementation could have come with more education. According to the informants, a plaintiff’s counsel plays a major role in the investigation and can be of great help in their work. Frozen fright is according to the investigators a common condition among people exposed to rape, in current jurisdiction, it is classified as rape if someone exploits a person who is in this vulnerable situation, therefore why this is studied. The expectation is that the report’s conclusions can be used in the implementation of laws and contribute with knowledge in the continued criminal investigation and in the judiciary.

Abstract:
The tube feeding constitutes an alternative way for patients with a clinic situation that the oral way is hindered. It is known that these patients require particular methods in the drug utilization process, even in the selection of the pharmaceutical form of the medicine as in the preparation and administration of these drugs. To understand the patient characteristics using enteral tube feeding (ETF) in the Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre as well as the drugs prescribed by ETF way, the medical records of 315 interned patients were analyzed in the first stage of the research. The majority of patients was adults (51%) of male gender (59%) with cancer (32%) or neurological disease (21%) diagnostic. The ETF using average was 15 days. Ninety five per cent of the analyzed patients used some kind of drug in the solid pharmaceutical form, mainly tablets (72%), capsule (12%) and coated tablet (9%). The ETF using average was 15 days. Ninety five per cent of the analyzed patients used some kind of drug in the solid pharmaceutical form, mainly tablets (72%), capsule (12%) and coated tablet (9%). The average of ETF changing was 32%. In the second stage of this research, nurse assistants were observed in their routine of working in the hospital to analyze the process of preparation and administration of the drugs to patients with ETF. It was observed that the nurses assistant neither use proper techniques in the moment of the drugs preparation nor in the administration of these drugs to patients with ETF. The high incidence of using solid pharmaceutical forms; the number of drugs prescribed, the using days of ETF and the diversity of working methods used in the derivation, dilution and administration moment by the nurse assistants showed that despite good amount of information in the literature about the administration of drugs in patients using ETF, the clinical practice is being carried out in a way that is inconsistent with the data available, causing difficulties for the patient treatment.
