Abstract:
INTRODUCTIONThe laboratory at Plymouth was notified of the capture of five dolphins in a commercial trawl on 9 December 1982, three of the specimens were living and therefore immediately released. The remaining two were brought to the laboratory, identified as Delphinus delphis Linnaeus, 1758, their size and sex were recorded and the stomachs removed for examination of their contents. The exact location of capture was not recorded, but is known to be within 40 miles of Plymouth.Reports of strandings of D. delphis collected by the British Museum (Natural History), (Harmer, 1914–27; Fraser, 1934, 1946, 1953, 1974) and more recent recorded sightings (Evans, 1980) show that the common dolphin is clearly not rare in British waters. Although the species has been recorded off all British coasts, sightings and strandings are concentrated off the south and south-west coasts of Britain and Ireland. The variation in their numbers and distribution both during this century and on a seasonal basis each year has been accounted for mainly by the fluctuation and movement of their food supply (Evans, 1980; Sheldrick, 1976).

Abstract:
Three women who survived bombings as children during the Algerian War (1954-1956) published autobiographies of their recovery between 2012 and 2016. Danielle Michel-Chich had a leg amputated when she was five after a bombing in Algiers, Nicole Simon’s legs were burned and scarred from a bombing in Mostaganem when she was fifteen and Delphine Renard was blinded and disfigured at the age of four when a bomb exploded in her Parisian home. Each woman recounts the pain and guilt of survival and grapples with how to reciprocate the care they received. Using a social justice framework, this essay examines how narratives of care build connections between people. As the child survivors of terrorist attacks cope with medical and personal care after bodily trauma, writing becomes a major part of self-care in the recovery process.

Abstract:
The ancient deme of Aixone coincides with the area of the modern Athenian suburb of Glyphada. An extensive, comprehensive study on this deme was published in 1990 by Eleni Konsolaki-Giannopoulou. Since then, new excavation data have come to light which support the conclusions of this study and provide us with even greater insights into the life of the deme. Another monograph on Aixone will be published by Delphine Ackermann in 2017, entitled Une microhistoire d’Athènes. Le dème d’Aixônè dans l’Antiquité.Aixone, along with neighbouring Halai Aixonidai, belonged to the Kekropis tribe. In Classical and Hellenistic times the settlement extended from the west of Pirnari to the east of modern Leoforos Dimarchou Aggelou Metaxa, thus coinciding for the large part with the area of modern Glyphada. The deme centre lay near the Church of Agios Nikolaos, west of modern Vouliagmenis Avenue (Eliot 1962: 21). To the east of the settlement lay the deme's agricultural lands and to the west the port, salt lake and the salt pits.

Abstract:
The rise of submarine shipbuilding in Russia of 1900–1915 was influenced by the shortage of financial, technical and personnel resources. And yet the fleet received, along with American and German, boats of domestic design. Their design was concentrated in the hands of the outstanding theorist and engineer I.G. Bubnov, who announced the development of a special "Russian type" of a submarine that embodied the theoretical installations professed by him. The ships created according to Bubnov's designs are often regarded by fleet historians as unsurpassed in the world naval technology. Such a view contradicts the concrete data accumulated in historical research and needs critical consideration. For this purpose it is used classical methods of source studies and analysis of historiographical practice. The actual data indicate the harm brought to the fleet by the monopolization of scientific and technical activities. Submariners have developed a critical attitude towards the imposed type with its inherent number of persistent shortcomings. Bubnov refused to correct the shape of the hull which caused excessive water resistance. At the same time, in an effort to achieve the set speed of the boat, the designer envisaged in his projects such a powerful power plant that it exceeded the real capabilities of mechanical engineering and was also heavy and cumbersome. The boat commanders and engineers pointed out the need to reduce the submerging time of the boats, increase their survivability, add watertight bulkheads, abandon the low-impact mine vehicles of Dzhevetsky system, make the hull shape more streamlined, but the maritime administration preferred to save time and money and dismissed claims, sacrificing the comfort and safety of the crews. The experience of the First World War and familiarization with the most successful American and British designs nevertheless prompted I.G. Bubnov in 1915-1916. to revise the design principles concerning the shape of the hull, the internal structure of boats, the nature of engines, weapons, but the more advanced projects prepared by him could not be realized.

Abstract:
In this article, on the basis of documents stored in the funds of the State Archive of the Russian Federation, the Russian State Archive of Socio-Political History and the United State Archive of the Chelyabinsk Region, the regulation of the penitentiary justice authorities is considered. The aim of the paper is to identify the characteristic features of the regulation of the activities of the penitentiary justice bodies. The number of those convicted by the penitentiary courts for the period of their existence (1946–1956) is revealed. The characteristic features of the regulation of the activities of the penitentiary justice bodies are highlighted. These include the following. Firstly, the delphic language resulting in the lack of clearly defined competence for the penitentiary courts; their functions expanded and narrowed. Secondly, the inconsistency of the regulatory framework manifested in the fact that by-laws passed by the Ministry of Justice contradicted the legislation and limited the rights of the accused and defendants. The practice of the Judicial Collegium for Penitentiary Courts of the USSR Supreme Court was not consistent. The author distinguishes two stages in the development of the competence of prison camp courts. The first one that lasted until the early 1950s was the period of expansion. The second stage was reduction of competence. At the same time, initially the reduction of competence was not common. But, after the death of I. Stalin, this process became widespread.

Valla, Kameni Kwente Danielle. "L'écriture de l'intimité dans les romans de Ken Bugul et de Delphine de Vigan." Electronic Thesis or Diss., Université de Lorraine, 2021. http://www.theses.fr/2021LORR0333.

Full text
Abstract:
The writing of intimacy in Ken Bugul and Delphine de Vigan is an expression of pain related to childhood and particularly to the relationship with the mother. This study aims to analyse the fictionalisation of the writers' experiences in the corpus and to identify the symbolism at the poetic and thematic level. It appears that the two authors, although belonging to two cultural and geographical areas, write their intimacy to repair the suffering they have undergone since childhood on the one hand, and that through their discourses they manage to heal the world in a form of empathy with the reader on the other hand. This work is based on sociology and theories of autobiography which allow us to grasp the imaginary of the authors from their original environment that is the family, by tracing their biographical, social, and literary trajectory. This itinerary shows that the uneasiness of the authors can be read in their writings through a series of disruptions of social and aesthetic codes at the sexual, linguistic, and generic levels. Any form of strict classification is rejected. From the biographical elements present and reinvested from one text to another, this work attempts to propose intimacy to redefine a certain register of the contemporary extreme genre so called "biofictional". This work is divided into three parts of two chapters each. The first part entitled “Scenography of intimacy: chronotope and characters” consists in examining the spatio-temporal considerations and the conscious or unconscious embedding elements which legitimize the literary cartography of the poetics of intimacy and allow us to read the postures of Ken Bugul and Delphine de Vigan in the corpus. Subsequently, the second part “Poetics of intimacy” proposes to see how, through the writing of intimacy, the authors manage to decompartmentalize the codes within the novel itself, on the one hand, and to show that a dynamic of aesthetic recognition runs through t he texts of Ken Bugul and Delphine de Vigan. In the end, the third part entitled "The themes and symbolism of intimacy in Ken Bugul and Delphine de Vigan" brings out the figurations and postulates of the writing of intimacy at the personal, socio-cultural and political level of on the one hand, and the new aesthetics that emerge on the other hand. Keywords: Intimacy, writing, family, autobiography, poetics, sociology

Roper, Jerry L. "A Heuristic Approach to Creating Technological Fair Use Guidelines in Higher Education." NSUWorks, 2017. http://nsuworks.nova.edu/gscis_etd/1016.

Full text
Abstract:
Higher education has experienced challenges defining and implementing copyright compliance. Confusion among faculty and staff appears to be common regarding copyright and fair use. The original copyright doctrine was drafted over 200 years ago, which predates practically all technological advances that have and will continue to occur. Change is slow and onerous with most legislation; there is not much possibility the small amendments made to the law will be able to keep pace with the continual technological evolution. Further, judges are citing precedents in court rulings of copyright disputes that were made using the best interpretation of the law, even though those earlier adjudicators had nothing concrete upon which to base decisions. The cycle of loose interpretations further exacerbates the copyright and fair use problem involving technology. Moreover, this concern has been magnified due to the digital nature of lesson delivery most learning institutions are adopting today. The rapid, widespread move toward online learning methods creates an entire set of copyright and fair use circumstances that extend beyond the traditional, face-to-face pedagogical issues. Invariably, schools will be left to attempt to decide what will be considered legal and safe, often by trial and error, until clearer, universally accepted guidelines can be created. A group consensus for best practice was achieved over three rounds of surveying with the help of a Delphi panel highly experienced in copyright laws. Opinions converged early during the process, where proper fair use assessment was one of the major themes appearing during the first round. Respondents also agreed future educators will undoubtedly continue to struggle with fully understanding the intricacies of fair use. An overall consensus reached for many questions was sufficient for answering the proposed research questions and drafting a list of recommendations for technological fair use. The outcome should add to the existing knowledge base, given the limited number of studies that have been conducted regarding the complexities of copyright topics in distance and online education. Recommendations for further investigations encourages researchers to continue where this effort ends to remain current and compliant with the ubiquitous changes in technologies.

Dfouni, Marc. "Knowledge leaders' critical issues : an international Delphi study." Thesis, 2002. http://spectrum.library.concordia.ca/1966/1/MQ77669.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
Nowadays, an increasing number of organizations hire knowledge leaders to create and maintain a knowledge management environment. However, the critical issues these individuals face are very poorly defined in today's academic literature. Using a web-based Delphi method, this study is the first to reach a worldwide consensus on knowledge leaders' critical issues. These issues include knowledge leaders' roles, skills, perceived knowledge management benefits and obstacles, as well as the technologies and tools they use for implementing knowledge management initiatives. A stable level of agreement among 100 knowledge leaders has been reached on these issues. The results indicate that their most important role is to foster a knowledge sharing culture in their organization in order to overcome the most important obstacle: organizational culture. They also suggest that the key abilities a knowledge leader should possess are those of strong interpersonal and leadership skills. In addition, portals and information retrieval engines are found to be the most widely used technologies and tools to develop and/or implement knowledge management initiatives. Finally, an increase in internal knowledge sharing was judged to be the most significant of all perceived knowledge management benefits.

The Commission for the Year 2000, created in 1964 in the American Academy of Arts and Science under the chairmanship of Daniel Bell was a key site for the domestication of the predictive technologies developed at RAND, in particular Delphi and the scenario method. Bell moved, in the years of the 1960s, from his notes on the end of ideology at the beginning of the decade to his conclusion that post-industrial society was a society prone to new forms of social conflict and in need of a new mechanism of coordination. Bell thought that he had found this mechanism in the area of forecasting and futures research—activities which might substitute a planning mechanism in American society and provide a new set of “decision tools” for American politics.

Abstract:
This highly successful episode of the Doinel saga was shot during the 1968 political riots. This may account for the formidable energy and freedom of the narrative. Following a Bildungsroman pattern, it shows a young man learning about social codes and passion. In this comedy, Delphine Seyrig plays the role of one of Truffaut’s most magical woman. The analysis details how inner drives are inscribed iconographically in the visuals of the film. Shot-by-shot analysis: When having coffee with his love object, Doinel calls her “Monsieur”. In Truffaut’s films, disorders of passion go hand in hand with disorders of language.

Abstract:
The Syrian marine water is one of the least studied areas for cetaceans in the Mediterranean Sea. Lack of basic knowledge, such as species composition and habitat, makes it impossible to develop effective conservation measures. The survey carried out along the Syrian coast by monitoring the stranding individuals on the shore since 2002 showed that there were 11 species of marine mammals living in/or visiting the Syrian marine waters at present of which 10 species belonging to the cetacean order and on belonging to pinnipeds order. The following species have been recorded: Pseudorca crassidens, Megaptera novaeangliae, Physeter macrocephalus, Tursiops truncatus, Stenella coeruleoalba, Delphinus delphis, Ziphius cavirostris, Grampus griseus, Balaenoptera physalus, Balaenoptera acutorostrata, and Manchus manchus. On the other hand, there are four species whose presence in the Syrian marine waters was mentioned a century ago by the researcher Gruvel and his team during three missions (1929–1931), but neither alive nor dead have been seen in this area during the surveys that were carried out since 1996 until the present, these species are: Phocoena phocoena, Globicephalus melas, Phocoena communis, Hyperoodon rostratus, Balaenoptera musculus. These observations reflect the vulnerability of marine mammals to anthropogenic activities, such as fishing operations, shipping, seismic activities, and climate change.

Abstract:
In One Crazy Summer and its sequels P.S. Be Eleven, and Gone Crazy in Alabama, Rita Williams-Garcia tracks the movement of African-American diasporas, generationally and geographically, through changes in food preparation and consumption. This chapter examines the third novel in the series first, showing how Delphine, the protagonist, becomes aware that her family’s identity is grounded in the deep roots of southern country foodways, dependent on personally raised or locally produced foods (especially milk and eggs) that are usually slow-cooked. The middle novel demonstrates the popularity of post-war convenience foods, cooked quickly and simply to match the faster tempo of urban life common to the generation that had made the Great Migration. The first novel, set in urban Oakland in the revolutionary year of 1968, shows the revolutionary power of food, most overtly through the Black Panthers’ breakfast program, which sought to better life for urban families by improving poor nutrition as well as to empower them politically. The novel also presents the deconstruction of the traditional kitchen: Cecile, the mother of Delphine and her sisters, rejects and revises the “yoke” of women’s service to men and family by making her kitchen into an art studio, redefining it as a new space that is both maternal and professional.

Abstract:
Today there is a new emphasis on a discipline related to knowledge engineering (KE): knowledge management (KM). The chapter shows that a Delphi methodology, developed and used with real success from 1986 through 2003, can be revised and up-dated to take a place in the spectrum of KE/KM. This new model combines elements of a Pareto technique at the front end of an small group Delphi paradigm/estimate-talk-estimate (SGDP/ETE) process to initially identify and sharpen the criticality of problems and their solutions. The final stage of the model uses real time Delphi (RTD) techniques. As a result, the final paradigm uses today's technology to achieve extremely accurate decision making and indicate what can be successful courses of action across many venues. Examples will be given of how this new model could be applied to current, real-life problems in three very different arenas.

Abstract Involvement in the Persian War is the first securely dated attestation of the Phokians in Greek history (Hdt. 7.203.1). There can be no doubt that the Phokian koinon (IG ix.1 101 (C3l)) antedated the Persian War, but neither Phokian participation in the Delphic Amphiktyony nor the war between Phokis and Thessalia can be securely dated (Larsen (1968) 43–44; Giovannini (1971) 50–51; Sanchez (2001) 37–44; Ellinger (1993) 17–22).

Abstract:
Most people have no idea that French film actress Delphine Seyrig was equal parts feminist activist and militant filmmaker. Distinctive for her beauty, singular voice, and roles in modernist films such as Last Year at Marienbad, Seyrig turned to filmmaking when she devoted her body, mind, and soul to the feminist movement in France during the mid-1970s. The works she completed, both individually and as a member of film collectives, belong to an entire history of feminist film and video art that emerged in the wake of 1968 and which Seyrig herself helped archive when she co-founded the Centre audiovisuel de Simone de Beauvoir with filmmaker Carole Roussopoulos in 1982. This includes Sois belle et tais-toi, a 1981 documentary Seyrig made with Roussopoulos on the treatment of actresses by the film industry, and Maso et miso vonten bateau (1975), which, humorously addressed misogyny and hypocrisy. Seyrig’s interventions in debates on gender politics and her shift from intellectual actress to cinéastemilitante, or from one mode of cinema to another, raise important questions regarding the conditions and implications of the work assumed by feminist cultural workers.

Abstract:
I must have been one of Barry’s first research students in Oxford when he took over supervision of my doctoral thesis in 1973. Central Gaul and its coinage in the late Iron Age were still frontier areas for research for a British student and I had come to them from Classics and Roman history, with a special interest in coinage but with no experience whatever of archaeology. I am eternally grateful to Barry for his kindly and enthusiastic guidance as I completed my thesis on time and for his encouragement to continue afterwards with research into Iron Age economy and society. He invited me to give my first public paper at the landmark Oppida conference at Rewley House in 1975 (Nash 1976) and we jointly supervised a number of research students while I was at the Ashmolean Museum as Assistant Keeper first of Roman, then of Greek coins in the Heberden Coin Room, which I left in 1986 to pursue another career as a Child Psychotherapist. I doubt I would have had the energy or self-discipline to return to part-time, freelance study of Iron Age Italy in its wider European setting a few years ago had Barry not greeted a draft of something I had written on French prehistory with, ‘Don’t stop now!’ and sponsored my application for an Honorary Research Associateship at the Institute of Archaeology at Oxford. With this chapter based on work in progress I would like to thank him for all his support over the years, and celebrate a long association. Re-reading some of Barry’s recent books with this paper in mind I found I kept wanting to engage him in conversation in the many places where, with an enviable narrative freedom that it is difficult to imagine in the academic archaeology of thirty years ago, he evokes the reality of people’s lives in the past, whether it be Pytheas’ journey to the frozen north (Cunliffe 2002) or the Celtic raiding mentality (Cunliffe 1997: 88–9) or wondering whether old fighters living in the Fayum oasis in the mid-third century BC told ‘their incredulous children stories of the fertile Danube plain or the pine-clad slopes of Mount Parnassos remembered from the time when they had camped in its shadow waiting to pillage Delphi’ (Cunliffe 1997: 182).
