Radio transmission channel influences greatly the quality of transmitted voice and data signal in terms of data rate and robustness. This degradation is as a result of many factors, notable amongst them are having multiple replica of the transmitted signal at the receiver (multipath), changes of frequency as a result of the movement of the aircraft (Doppler shift) and noise. This paper characterizes the scattered components of the aeronautical channel in terms of delay spread. Geometric representation is used to derive expressions for the maximum delay spread using the 2-ray model and the three dimensional model of the scattered path. Furthermore, the delay and Doppler frequencies are described as a function of the horizontal distance to the specular reflection point between a ground station and a test article. The simulated results are compared to measured data of related articles and the value of the maximum delay spread is compared with the proposed intersymbol guard band for Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) in the Integrated Network Enhanced Telemetry (iNET) program to see if this proposition can be adapted to the aeronautical channel.

Abstract:
Ultrawideband (UWB) is one of the most promising communication technologies in recent times with the promise of high data rates and spectral reuse. This work analyses the outdoor and outdoor-to-indoor propagating characteristics of the UWB pulse, which can be of the order of a few gigahertz in bandwidth. The aim of the thesis is to provide the parameters needed in order to develop a channel model for such cases. The channel model would then play an important role in determining physical layer (PHY) solutions to optimally exploit these characteristics. The measurements carried out on the Virginia Tech campus are used to compute parameters such as path loss, penetration loss and delay statistics. These are carried out in multiple frequency bands and the results are compared across frequency bands to determine effect of different frequency levels on the parameters. Finally the results are analyzed with respect to similar parameters obtained in other measurement campaigns in an attempt to evaluate the performance of Ultrawideband vis-à-vis narrowband systems.

This work presents a study of signal variability, coherence bandwidth and delay spread of a WiMAX signal transmitted through a mobile radio propagation environment. The statistical analysis of the received signal is compared with theoretical distributions. The transmitted WiMAX signal has its physical layer based on OFDM-256 and 3.4 GHz as central frequency. Based on the signal received during the measurements campaign some analysis are done: signal variability; level crossing rate; average fade duration; coherence bandwidth; and delay spread calculation, based on theoretical formulas, in LOS and NLOS environment. The received signal amplitude is plotted as a function of the cumulative probability and compared to the theoretical Rayleigh and m-Nakagami cumulative distributions. It’s possible to notice a good characterization of the measured data based on those two distributions. Some graphs show the level crossing rate and average fade duration of a specific subcarrier of the received signal. In the same graphs are also plotted the theoretical values of Nakagami-m and Rayleigh distributions for those two parameters and we are able to see the good agreement. The correlation between subcarriers is also calculated in order to find out the correlation bandwidth for a correlation of 0.5. Once that the correlation bandwidth is known, the delay spread is calculated based on theoretical formulas.

A parallel multi-channel receiver for binary phase shift keyed (BPSK) direct-sequence (DS) spread-spectrum (SS) is introduced in this paper. It adopts a Costas carrier frequency-tracking loop which maintains frequency lock rather than phase lock, and the delay-lock error can be noncoherently obtained to track the PN code. For airborne applications, this method will extend effectively the receiver’s tracking dynamics range for the carrier Doppler shift. A erasable programmable logic device (EPLD) is applied to get the advantage of smaller size and higher flexibility. A high speed microprocessor (TMS320C30) which acts as the processing unit of the receiver is used for acquiring and tracking of the carrier and PN code by digital signal processing algorithms. This receiver is more flexible and is easily improved by reconfiguring the EPLD and modifying the software algorithms. Its fundamental principle is described in the paper.

Abstract:
The radio wave propagation prediction is one of the key elements for designing an efficient radio network system. WRAP International has developed a software for spectrum management and radio network planning. This software includes some wave propagation models which are used to predict path loss. Current propagation models in WRAP perform the calculation in a vertical 2D plane, the plane between the transmitter and the receiver. The goal of this thesis is to investigate and implement a 3D wave propagation model, in a way that reflections and diffractions from the sides are taken into account. The implemented 3D wave propagation model should be both fast and accurate. A full 3D model which uses high resolution geographical data may be accurate, but it is inefficient in terms of memory usage and computational time. Based on the fact that in urban areas the strongest path between the receiver and the transmitter exists with no joint between vertical and horizontal diffractions [10], the radio wave propagation can be divided into two parts, the vertical and horizontal part. Calculations along the horizontal and vertical parts are performed independently, and after that, the results are combined. This approach leads to less computational complexity, faster calculation time, less memory usage, and still maintaining a good accuracy. The proposed model is implemented in C++ and speeded up using parallel programming techniques. Using the provided Stockholm high resolution geographical data, simulations are performed and results are compared with real measurements and other wave propagation models. In addition to the path loss calculation, the proposed model can also be used to estimate the channel power delay profile and the delay spread.

At present, multiple mobile targets will be remote controlled in many remote control and telemetry system, in which multiple access technology will be applied. This paper proposes a communication scheme to remote control multiple mobile targets using Coded-Division Multiple Access(CDMA) technique. It's feasibility, advantage and shortcoming are analyzed. Moreover, the key techniques of Direct-Sequence Spread Spectrum(DS/SS) system, i.e. the correlation detection and delay lock-on techniques, are studied and stimulated on the experimental model. The results of theoretical analysis show that the CDMA system has the peculiar advantage over the conventional multiple access system, such as FDMA and TDMA.

Abstract:
This thesis presents ambient energy data obtained from a measurement campaign carried out at an automobile plant. At the automobile plant, ambient light, ambient temperature and ambient radio frequency were measured during the day time over two days. The measurement results showed that ambient light generated the highest DC power. For plant and operation managers at the automobile plant, the measurement data can be used in system design considerations for future energy harvesting wireless sensor nodes at the plant. In addition, wideband measurements obtained from a machine workshop are presented in this thesis. The power delay profile of the wireless channel was obtained by using a frequency domain channel sounding technique. The measurements were compared with an equivalent ray tracing model in order to validate the suitability of the commercial propagation software used in this work. Furthermore, a novel technique for mathematically recreating the time dispersion created by factory inventory in a radio frequency channel is discussed. As a wireless receiver design parameter, delay spread characterizes the amplitude and phase response of the radio channel. In wireless sensor devices, this becomes paramount, as it determines the complexity of the receiver. In reality, it is sometimes difficult to obtain full detail floor plans of factories for deterministic modelling or carry out spot measurements during building construction. As a result, radio provision may be suboptimal. The method presented in this thesis is based on 3-D fractal geometry. By employing the fractal overlaying algorithm presented, metallic objects can be placed on a floor plan so as to obtain similar radio frequency channel effects. The environment created using the fractal approach was used to estimate the amount of energy a harvesting device can accumulate in a University machine workshop space.

Abstract:
Abstract The present dissertation deals with initial synchronization in Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) networks. In the first part of this thesis an extensive and up-to-date review of the literature is presented. The basic theory of code acquisition as well as different techniques and structures used to achieve the initial synchronization are discussed. A survey of the most common theoretical approaches allowing performance characterization of the acquisition process is included. The effect of noise, interference, carrier Doppler, multipath propagation, fading and data modulation on system performance are reviewed. Advanced code acquisition approaches exploiting interference suppression techniques and multiple antennas are also described. A summary of the results obtained within the area of code acquisition in CDMA networks is also embraced by this thesis. The distinctive assumption is to consider the actual variable effect of multiple access interference on the delay-domain search process, instead of the usual constant approximation. Three directions of research are followed. Models for code acquisition in quasi-synchronous and asynchronous CDMA networks are first developed and analysed. Closed-form expressions for the main performance figures of the acquisition process are derived and analysed. Results show a strong dependence of the mean acquisition time with the nature of the multiple access interference. In the second area of research the previous results are extended to consider code acquisition with a multi-branch (Rake) receiver in a multipath channel. A generic model for Rake receiver code acquisition is considered and developed, in which the synchronization takes place in two phases. The first detected path is allocated to the first finger during the initial synchronization phase, whereas the remaining fingers are successively allocated to other available paths in the postinitial synchronization phase. Performance measures for this acquisition process are also derived and analysed. Finally, based on the use of an antenna array and beamforming techniques, conventional delay-domain code acquisition is extended to the angular domain, resulting in a two-dimensional (delay-angle) search. This technique is found to be feasible, outperforming the synchronization approach exploiting a single-antenna. It is found that there exists an optimal number of antennas that minimises the mean acquisition time. Two-dimensional code acquisition is studied in a variety of scenarios, including single and multipath channels, fixed and fading channels, and with uniform and nonuniform spatial distributions of interference. Different two-dimensional search strategies are studied. A clear dependence of acquisition performance with the search strategy and the particular distribution of interference is pointed out. The performance of two-dimensional code acquisition is found to be seriously deteriorated by the presence of spatially nonuniform interference. Schemes based on search strategy and adaptive detector structures are considered and analysed to combat the performance degradation in the mentioned case. A comparative study of code acquisition exploiting multiple antennas is also presented.

Abstract:
The goal of this thesis was to implement a DVB-T receiver on Coresonic’s DSP-processor and attempt to evaluate how to design a receiver that is robust against very strong echoes with a long delay. Long delayed echoes is very common in Single Frequency Networks (SFN) which is why focus was put on finding algorithms that work well in SFN.The thesis involved analyzing different algorithms involved in making a DVB-T receiver where the focus was to find a good channel estimation algorithm. The thesis also included programming the DSP-processor and making some smaller modifications to their hardware solution to integrate their error correction hardware. After finding relevant articles with promising algorithms a small transmitter, channel and receiver was modeled in Matlab in order to try the different algorithms. After testing the different algorithms some of the simpler ones were first implemented to quickly get a working receiver. The implementation was however time consuming and all of the most appropriate algorithms to better avert the effects of long and strong echoes where not implemented. This means some algorithms where only analyzed and discussed. The receiver performance is tested and simulated in Coresonic’s DSP simulator. The receiver does not fully meet the requirements set by NorDig when it comes to handling long delay spread echoes with a magnitude of 0db when tested in the DSP processor simulator. The receiver is however able to handle the Ricean channel at a SNR of 19 Db and Rayleigh channel at an SNR of 24 Db.This report is the result of the final thesis of a Master of Science in Computer Engineering at Linköpings Tekniska Högskola. The thesis was performed at Coresonic AB in Mjärdevi Linköping.

Abstract:
Radio wave propagation measurements provide a way to accurately and reliably characterize environments to assist in the development and optimization of wireless communication systems. As digital radio systems occupy wider bandwidths and use multipath signal combining to enhance quality of service, knowledge of time dispersion and the multipath structure of radio channels become increasingly important. The wideband measurement system presented herein provides a practical means to precisely measure the delays and strengths of individual multipath components which arrive at a radio receiver.

Presented in this Thesis are fundamental theory, practical implementation, and simulation models for a sliding correlator measurement system. The sliding correlator technique is explained in detail and large-scale measurement survey is presented. Techniques for statistically quantifying the characteristics of propagation using the sliding correlator measurements are presented and compared. The development of simulations of the sliding correlator system is described, and simulation results are used to test conventional and newly developed post-processing algorithms.

This Thesis presents a practical view of the sliding correlator measurement system, but its foundations are rooted in the theoretical results which are explained and derived herein. Propagation researchers and students in the wireless communication field may find this work and the cited references useful for continued study of wideband propagation measurements or for application of the sliding correlator system as a wideband measurement solution.

This thesis outlines a statistical characterization of the Brazilian In-Home Low-Voltage Electric Power Grid as a communication medium. The discussions are based on estimated channels obtained in a measurement campaign carried out in four different apartments with sizes ranging from 50 up to 90 square meters. The parameters considered for this analysis are the Root Mean Square Delay Spread, the average channel gain, and the channel capacity. For the sake of comparison with the Electric Power Grid in United States, the frequency band ranging from 1:705 up to 30 MHz was set. The reported analysis shows that the Root Mean Square Delay Spread and the average channel gain cannot be modeled as log-normal variables, this cast doubt the current results found in the literature, in which is stated that both the Root Mean Square Delay Spread and the average channel gain follow a log-normal distribution. This was followed by the Power Line Communication access impedance and noise measurements in the In-Home Low-Voltage Electric Power Grid. Additionally, the suitability of cooperation concepts for improving the performance of Power Line Communication systems was analyzed, more specifically in the Brazilian In-Home Low-Voltage Electric Power Grid. For this purpose, the performance of the Amplify-and-Forward and Decode-and- Forward protocols, together with the Equal-Gain Combining, Selection Combining, and Maximal-Ratio Combining techniques were analyzed. The analysis was carried out on the measured data covering a frequency band from 1:705 up to 100 MHz. The measured data addresses four scenarios for possible relay node locations. The attained results show that the Amplify-and-Forward is of limited applicability in the Power Line Communication context and the opposite is valid to the Decode-and-Forward protocol, mainly if the error probability of detecting symbols at the relay node is zero.

Abstract:
Current propogation models are no longer sufficient for wireless network planning. They are neither accurate (empirical) nor fast enough (deterministic) to be applicable in the applications of Automated Cell Planning. This thesis focuses on the development of a new method, namely Intelligent Ray Launching Algorithm (IRLA), which is based on a fast, accurate and robust algorithm that is especially suitable for wireless network planning. The infrastructure of IRLA is thoroughly analysed in this thesis and the results are presented. Foster's design methodology has been used to parallelise the new model. Various scenarios for outdoor, indoor, indoor-to-outdoor and outdoor-to-indoor settings have been employed to test the effectiveness and efficiency of IRLA. The field strengths (path loss) and multipath information were calculated, which were used to demonstrate the application of IRLA. The accuracy of IRLA is guaranteed via the use of a meta-based heuristics calibration procedure. In order to achieve a simulation within a realistic time scale, acceleration techniques such as avoid double marking, multi-threading and the use of Parallel Object-Oriented Programming C++ have been employed. Since multipath for a large number of receiver locations can be easily obtained via IRLA, the study of delay spread has been presented. The success of the integration with a wireless network planning platform exemplifies that IRLA is suitable for wireless network planning and optimisation, which is beneficial to relevant academics and industries. Testing demonstrated that depending on various scenarios, IRLA obtains industrially-recognised accuracy ranging from 5 to 8 dB Root-Mean-Square-Error. This model is highly-efficient because its required runtime for most simulations is from a few seconds to a few minutes.

Strydom, Trudie. "Acoustic models of cochlear implants." Thesis, University of Pretoria, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/30721.

Full text
Abstract:
Acoustic models are useful tools to increase understanding of cochlear implant perception. Two particular issues in modelling cochlear implant perception were considered in the present study, which aimed at improving acoustic models. The first included an electricallayer in the model, while the second manipulated synthesis signal parameters. Two parts of the study explored the effects of current decay, compression function and simultaneous stimulation, by including the electrical layer. The SPREAD model, which incorporated this layer, yielded the asymptote in speech intelligibility at seven channels observed in CI listeners. It was shown that the intensity of border channels was deemphasized in relation to more central channels. This was caused by the one-sided effects of current spread from neighbouring channels for the border channels, as opposed to the two-sided effects for the more central channels. It was theorised that more compressive mapping functions would affect spectral cues and consequently speech intelligibility, but speech intelligibility experiments did not confirm this theory. A simultaneous analogue stimulation (SAS) model, which modelled simultaneous stimulation, yielded intelligibility results that were lower than those of the SPREAD model at 16 channels. The SAS model also appeared to introduce more temporal distortion than the SPREAD model. A third part of the study endeavoured to improve correspondence of acoustic model results with cochlear implant listener results by using nine different synthesis signals. The best synthesis signal was noise-band based. The widths of these increased linearly from 0.4 mm at the apical to 8 mm at the basal end. Good correspondence between speech recognition outcomes using this synthesis signal with those of CI listeners was found.

Abstract:
In this thesis, we focus on radio resource planning issues for low power wide area networks based on NB-IoT and LoRa technologies. In both cases, the average behavior of the network is considered by assuming the sensors and the collectors are distributed according to independent random Poisson Point Process marked by the channel randomness. For the NB-IoT, we elaborate a statistical dimensioning model that estimates the number of radio resources in the network depending on the tolerated delay access, the density of active nodes, the collectors, and the antenna configuration with single and multi-user transmission. For the LoRa network, we propose a multi-sub band allocation technique to mitigate the high level of interference induced by nodes that transmit with the same spreading factor. To dynamically allocate the spreading factor and the power, we present a Q-learning multi-agent approach to improve the energy efficiency

Abstract:

Abstract:
The mobility that wireless communication offers to users, added to the ease of installation have increased the demand on such communication systems. However, the main drawback of wireless communication is the degradation of the signal as it travels through the channel due to the different propagation mechanisms the signal undergoes. To minimise the effect of the channel and get the best service, the base stations must be appropriately located within the environment. This requires proper knowledge of the channel characteristics. Ray tracing software is used throughout this work to generate the channel characteristics of an indoor environment. After getting the channel characteristics, a novel cost function is defined based on the path loss values and it is then optimised. Once the optimal base stations’ positions are found, the minimal amount of power required to cover a predefined percentage of the possible receivers’ locations is calculated. On the other hand, a receiver’s position acquiring enough field strength does not necessarily enjoy the service. This depends on the time dispersion parameters values relative to the symbol rate. The time dispersion parameters have always been ignored in the literature while finding the optimal base stations’ locations. Three cost functions that take into consideration both the path loss and rms delay spread, for the first time in the literature, are therefore defined. The cost functions are optimised and their corresponding results are compared. Furthermore, indoor environments have always been considered static which is never realistic. They are subject to continuous changes such as opening doors and windows as well as the presence of people. The first detailed analysis and quantified results of the effect of a dynamic environment on the optimal base stations’ positions and minimal emitted power are presented. It is shown that the optimal base stations’ locations and minimal emitted power are sensitive to such environment changes. The environment changes can also disturb the service for active receivers. Three techniques to overcome the effect of environment changes and bring the disturbed service back to receivers are proposed. The first two techniques rely on increasing the emitted power or changing the antenna polarisation. The third technique is a novel technique that gives the base station the ability to automatically move in various directions within a limited distance. The techniques are tested and their efficiency and limitations are discussed.

Abstract:
The aim of this Bachelor’s thesis is to obtain understanding and knowledge about how literary scholars collaborate regarding information. Seven scholars have been studied in the aim to find out social and cultural elements which create particular prerequisites for their practice, with focus on information sharing. The method used has consisted of semi-structured interviews. The informants have been studied from a socio cultural and domain analysis starting point, which means that they are studied in the light of being members in their practice. The result of the study has shown that information sharing is not limited to any specific type of information. Different types of information are for example reviews and book tips. Collaboration regarding information considerable occurs in informal situations, for example at the time of lunch and in spontaneous conversations. Formal situations consist of conferences and seminars. Another situation of collaboration is supervision. The most useful communication resource is e-mail. To obtain this information my key questions are formulated about collaboration regarding information, such as types of information, situations and communication resources. The earlier studies which are used in this thesis were chosen by the author in an initial phase, and then the work went on with the interviews. The analysis and discussion led then to my conclusions I show in the summary and also in brevity in this section.

This thesis is part of the field of the characterization of wireless communication systems using antennas diversity. Indeed, such systems allow fighting against the signals fading, when the terminal is inside a strong multipath environment. The issue of such research is: to study the association of multiple antennas at transmitting and/or receiving sides to improve the link budget, and the capacity of wireless systems, (decrease of BER (Bit Error Rate), increase of throughput …). This thesis takes an interest to the electromagnetic aspect, and signal processing. In order to understand the involved phenomena, and to characterize the terminal performance, it should be placed in a controlled multipath propagation environment in time, and in space. This brings us to find measurement methodologies able to reproduce models of realistic propagation channels. As part of this thesis the method used is the reverberation chamber. In this thesis we are interested in the time aspect. Reverberation chamber (RC) is considered as a useful tool to emulate rich multipath environments. In this contribution, this device is employed to emulate multi clusters channel models (cluster is defined as a group of multipath), and evaluate performance of wireless communication systems. This evaluation is performed with real time and not-real time measurements. It remains to note that among the objectives set out in this PhD thesis is to obtain electromagnetic simulation model of the reverberation chamber based on circuit approach, in order to determine the channel transfer function versus losses quantities

Abstract:
This thesis aims to contribute to the developments of wireless communication systems. The work generally consists of three parts: the first part is a discussion on general digital communication systems, the second part focuses on wireless channel modelling and fading mitigation techniques, and in the third part we discuss the possible application of advanced digital signal processing, especially time-frequency representation and blind source separation, to wireless communication systems. The first part considers general digital communication systems which will be incorporated in later parts. Today's wireless communication system is a subbranch of a general digital communication system that employs various techniques of A/D (Analog to Digital) conversion, source coding, error correction, coding, modulation, and synchronization, signal detection in noise, channel estimation, and equalization. We study and develop the digital communication algorithms to enhance the performance of wireless communication systems. In the Second Part we focus on wireless channel modelling and fading mitigation techniques. A modified Jakes' method is developed for Rayleigh fading channels. We investigate the level-crossing rate (LCR), the average duration of fades (ADF), the probability density function (PDF), the cumulative distribution function (CDF) and the autocorrelation functions (ACF) of this model. The simulated results are verified against the analytical Clarke's channel model. We also construct frequency-selective geometrical-based hyperbolically distributed scatterers (GBHDS) for a macro-cell mobile environment with the proper statistical characteristics. The modified Clarke's model and the GBHDS model may be readily expanded to a MIMO channel model thus we study the MIMO fading channel, specifically we model the MIMO channel in the angular domain. A detailed analysis of Gauss-Markov approximation of the fading channel is also given. Two fading mitigation techniques are investigated: Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) and spatial diversity. In the Third Part, we devote ourselves to the exciting fields of Time-Frequency Analysis and Blind Source Separation and investigate the application of these powerful Digital Signal Processing (DSP) tools to improve the performance of wireless communication systems.

Abstract:
This thesis studies the influence of internal nozzle flow characteristics over a large spectrum of experimental conditions and diagnostics. Experiments were carried out for two nozzle geometries---cylindrical and conical single hole nozzles---and three different fuels. Two of the fuels are pure components---n-heptane and n-dodecane---while the third fuel consists of a three-component surrogate to better represent the physical and chemical properties of diesel fuel. Measurements include a complete hydraulic characterization consisting of instantaneous injection rate and spray momentum flux measurements; a high-speed visualization of isothermal liquid spray; a high-speed visualization of the evaporative inert spray, imaging liquid and vapor phases simultaneously and finally, a high-speed visualization of the high temperature reactive spray, imaging vapor phase and OH* chemiluminescence for each injection event. All high-temperature diagnostics were performed in a continuous flow test chamber that allows an accurate control on a wide range of thermodynamic conditions (up to 1000 K and 15 MPa). The experimental findings from this work, and the large database obtained (available for download at: http://www.cmt.upv.es/DD01.aspx), could be used to validate CFD models that could help the community understand the fundamental driving mechanisms behind these observations.

Abstract:
[EN] The potential of diesel engines in terms of robustness, efficiency and energy density has made them widely used as power generators and propulsion systems. Specifically, fuel atomization, vaporization and air-fuel mixing, have a fundamental effect on the combustion process, and consequently, a direct impact on pollutant formation, fuel consumption and noise emission. Since the combustion chamber has a limited space respect to the spray penetration, wall impingement is considered to be a common event in direct injection diesel engines, having a relevant influence in the spray evolution and its interaction with both surrounding air and solid walls. This makes of spray-wall interaction an important factor for the combustion process that is still hardly understood. At cold-start conditions, the low in-chamber pressures and temperatures promote the deposition of fuel in the piston wall, which leads to a boost in the formation of unburned hydrocarbons. Additionally, modern design trends such as the increment of rail pressures in injection systems and the progressive reduction of the engine displacement, favor the emergence of spray collision onto the walls. In spite of the evident relevance of the comprehension of this phenomenon and the efforts of engine researchers to reach it, the transient nature of injection process, its small time scales and the complexity of the physical phenomena that take place in the vicinity of the wall, make challenging the direct observation of this spray-wall interaction. Even though computational tools have proven to be priceless in this field of study, the need for reliable experimental data for the development of those predictive models is present. This thesis is aimed to shed light on the fundamental characteristics of spray-wall interaction (SWI) at diesel-like chamber conditions. A flat wall was set at different impingement distances and angles respect to the spray. In this way, two different kinds of experimental investigations on colliding sprays were carried out: A transparent quartz wall was employed into the chamber to, in isolation, analyze the macroscopic characteristics of the spray at both evaporative inert and reactive conditions, which have been observed laterally and through the wall, thanks to the use of a high-pressure and high-temperature vessel with optical accesses. This same test rig was used in the second kind of experiments, where instead of the quartz plate, a stainless steel wall was used to capture the effect of the operating conditions on the heat flux between the wall and the spray during the injection-combustion events and to determine how spray and flame evolution are affected by realistic heat transfer situations. This wall was instrumented to control its initial in-chamber surface temperature and to measure its variation with time by using high-speed thermocouples. Tests at free-jet conditions were also performed in order to provide a solid comparative base for those experiments.

Abstract:
The growing concern in recent decades, linked to the depletion of oil resources and global warming by greenhouse gases has increased the interest of butanol as an alternative fuel in the transport sector. However, the low yield of production and separation processes still prevents its commercialization as a fuel. Therefore, the intermediate fermentation mixture of butanol production, Acetone-Butanol-Ethanol (ABE), is increasingly considered as a potential alternative fuel because of its similar properties to butanol and its advantages in terms of the energy and cost in the separation process. The context of this work aims to study the impact of fuel properties on the spray and combustion processes of ABE mixture and alcohol fuels, blended with the diesel surrogate fuel, n-dodecane, in different volume ratio from 20% to 50%. A new combustion chamber called "New One Shot Engine," was designed and developed to reach the high-pressure and high temperatureconditions of "Spray-A" (60 bar, 800-900 K and 22.8 kg/m³) defined by the Engine Combustion Network (ECN).The macroscopic spray and combustion parameters were characterized by using the several optical techniques (extinction,Schlieren, chemiluminescence of OH*) under non-reactive (pure Nitrogen) and reactive (15% of oxygen) conditions. These experimental results not only made it possible to study the molecular oxygen impact and provide a new accurate database, but also to affirm the possibility of using ABE up to 20% by volume in compression-ignition engines, as its spray and combustion characteristics similar to conventional diesel fuel

This Master’s thesis project is part of the MOSES project and aims to assist the MOSES project with the demonstration of a mobile opportunistic sharing concept based on the NetInf protocol. Demonstrating the MOSES concept in practice requires deep understanding of networking, localization, transport, and dissemination of digital content in an ad hoc network. This implementation requires an analysis of the previous work, development of new functionalities, and finally an analysis of a series of controlled experiments. This Master’s thesis project has designed, implemented, and evaluated an Android application within the MOSES framework by using the previously developed NetInf Android library. This prototype is used to demonstrate how mobile Android users can opportunistically share and disseminate content based on their location using the MOSES/ICN concept. The functionality and efficiency of the prototype Android application built during this thesis project has been analyzed and evaluated by conducting a series of controlled experiments under the supervision of MOSES researchers. The results of these controlled experiments has provided insight for MOSES researchers as well as explored the concept of using ICN (NetInf) for opportunistic content distribution. The experiment results aim at assisting MOSES researchers to extend and further develop the prototype application and the involved algorithms to create a fully functional mobile application for experience sharing services tailored to large-scale events.

Abstract:
The statistics of the amplitude, time and angle of arrival of multipaths in an indoor environment are all necessary components of multipath models used to simulate the performance of spatial diversity in receive antenna configurations. The model presented by Saleh and Valenzuela, was added to by Spencer et. al., and included all three of these parameters for a 7 GHz channel. A system was built to measure these multipath parameters at 2.4 GHz for multiple locations in an indoor environment. Another system was built to measure the angle of transmission for a 6 GHz channel. The addition of this parameter allows spatial diversity at the transmitter along with the receiver to be simulated. The process of going from raw measurement data to discrete arrivals and then to clustered arrivals is analyzed. Many possible errors associated with discrete arrival processing are discussed along with possible solutions. Four clustering methods are compared and their relative strengths and weaknesses are pointed out. The effects that errors in the clustering process have on parameter estimation and model performance are also simulated.

In this thesis the coherent decision-directed delay-lock tracking loop(CDD-DLL) scheme is employed to develop a tracking loop for the binary pulse-position modulated direct sequence( BPPDS) CDMA system. It not only keeps the of BPPDS-CDMA system which has transmitting energy saving, a superior suppression of cross-correlation noise(CCN) and a significant spreading effect on white noise, but also has of components balance and hardware simplicity. In this proposed CDD-DLL of BPPDS system, the influence of CCN is emphasized. The normalized loop error characteristic (NEC),steady state tracking jitter, and mean time to first lock loss are discussed and presented. The numerical results show that there is approximately a $5dB$ gain in both normalized tracking jitter variance and normalized mean time to lose lock as compared to the conventional CDD-DLL of BPSK-DS system.

In this thesis, we investigate the effect of multi-path wireless channels for the Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) communication systems. In the European specification standard, the different modes by the number of sub-carriers, for example, 2K, 4K and 8K, etc., are used to combat the multi-path delay spread due the different transmission channels. We propose an estimation scheme to accurately estimate the multi-path delay spread and then the proper cyclic prefix can be added to reduce the inter-symbol interference (ISI).

Abstract:
We propose a closed-loop system for acquisition of the pseudo-noise (PN) signal in direct-sequence spread-spectrum (DS/SS) systems. We introduce a novel idea of using an auxiliary signal, as opposed to the PN signal itself, for correlation with the incoming signal. The correlation function of the auxiliary signal and the PN signal has a triangle shape that covers essentially the entire period of the PN signal. Consequently, their correlation provides the direction for the phase update of the local signal generator in the acquisition scheme. With coherent demodulation, mean and variance of the acquisition time are derived. Results show that the proposed system acquires the PN phase at least twice faster, with significantly smaller acquisition time variance, than the conventional serial-search acquisition system. We propose a closed-loop system with a pre-loop code phase estimator for acquisition of the PN signal in DS/SS systems. The incoming signal is correlated with the auxiliary signal. The pre-loop code phase estimator uses the correlation result to estimate the incoming code phase. The closed-loop acquisition system starts with this initial estimate. With coherent demodulation, mean and variance of the acquisition time are derived. Results show that, with proper choices of parameters, the proposed system acquires the PN phase significantly faster than both the conventional serial-search system and the closed-loop system without the pre-loop estimator. We propose a closed-loop system for joint acquisition of the carrier phase and the PN signal phase in DS/SS systems. The system has a voltage-controlled-clock loop for PN phase acquisition and a voltage-controlled-oscillator loop for carrier phase acquisition. These loops work together and both loops use the auxiliary signal for correlation with the incoming signal. The correlator outputs provide the directions for the local code phase and the carrier phase updates. Mean and variance of the code phase acquisition time are derived. Results show that, the proposed system performs better than both the noncoherent and the coherent serial-search systems, and almost as good as the coherent closed-loop system.

OFDM-based WLAN systems are originally used for nearly static environment. But in the trend of user-convenience, if we want to support mobility, the most important issue is the Doppler effect caused by the object velocity. We investigate how the Doppler effect, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and imperfect estimation of channel impulse response (CIR) and the maximum Doppler shift fd influence the final bit error rate (BER) under the simulation environment, modified WLAN 802.11a specification. For these effects, we give some simulation results and conclusions. If CIR and df are known with the same number of multipath, we can see some phenomenon. First, the BER is dominated by AWGN noise. Second, under the same channel delay spread, the higher the object velocity is, the more serious the BER is. Third, under the same the object velocity, the more serious the BER is. If CIR is known instead of fd, under the same error percentage of fd and the same number of multipath, the lesser the velocity is the lesser the BER curve changes. If fd is known instead of CIR with the same number of multipath, the longer the channel delay spread is, the more serious the BER is.

Sinha, Saurabh. "A multi-dimensional spread spectrum transceiver." Thesis, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/28885.

Abstract:
The research conducted for this thesis seeks to understand issues associated with integrating a direct spread spectrum system (DSSS) transceiver on to a single chip. Various types of sequences, such as Kasami sequences and Gold sequences, are available for use in typical spread spectrum systems. For this thesis, complex spreading sequences (CSS) are used for improved cross-correlation and autocorrelation properties that can be achieved by using such a sequence. While CSS and DSSS are well represented in the existing body of knowledge, and discrete bulky hardware solutions exist – an effort to jointly integrate CSS and DSSS on-chip was identified to be lacking. For this thesis, spread spectrum architecture was implemented focussing on sub-systems that are specific to CSS. This will be the main contribution for this thesis, but the contribution is further appended by various RF design challenges: highspeed requirements make RF circuits sensitive to the effects of parasitics, including parasitic inductance, passive component modelling, as well as signal integrity issues. The integration is first considered more ideally, using mathematical sub-systems, and then later implemented practically using complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) technology. The integration involves mixed-signal and radio frequency (RF) design techniques – and final integration involves several specialized analogue sub-systems, such as a class F power amplifier (PA), a low-noise amplifier (LNA), and LC voltage-controlled oscillators (VCOs). The research also considers various issues related to on-chip inductors, and also considers an active inductor implementation as an option for the VCO. With such an inductor a better quality factor is achievable. While some conventional sub-system design techniques are deployed, several modifications are made to adapt a given sub-system to the design requirements for this thesis. The contribution of the research lies in the circuit level modifications done at sub-system level aimed towards eventual integration. For multiple-access communication systems, where a number of independent users are required to share a common channel, the transceiver proposed in this thesis, can contribute towards improved data rate or bit error rate. The design is completed for fabrication in a standard 0.35-μm CMOS process with minimal external components. With an active chip area of about 5 mm2, the simulated transmitter consumes about 250 mW&the receiver consumes about 200 mW.

Conventional watermarking techniques based on single echo hiding provide many benefits, but also have several disadvantages, for example, a lenient decoding process, weakness against multiple encoding attacks, etc. In this work, we propose an exponential decay time-spread echo as an alternative to the time-spread echo method in conventional echo hiding. Spreading an echo in the time domain is achieved by using pseudo-noise (PN) sequences with exponential decay. By exponential-decay spreading the echo, the amplitude of each echo can be reduced, i.e., the energy of each echo becomes smaller with the increase of its offset in the time domain, so that the distortion induced by watermarking is imperceptible to humans while the decoding performance of the embedded watermarks is better maintained as compared with the case of conventional time-spread echo hiding, as shown by computer simulations, in which several parameters, such as the maximum amplitude and decay constant, were varied. Robustness against typical signal processing was also evaluated in these simulations and showed fair performance. Results of a transparency SNR using some pieces of music showed good imperceptibility.
