Abstract:
The article investigates and theoretically summarizes the peculiarities of training doctors at the master's level at the universities of ROC. Higher education in China is characterized by numerous changes due to the accumulation and adaptation of advanced successful experience in training specialists in different countries of the world. In this context, the property of scientists and educators of ROC concerning the organization of professional training of masters in medicine is of particular interest for Ukraine. Scientists are constantly searching for solutions and improving higher medical education in ROC. In the universities of the Republic of China, according to the field of study, the degree of master in medicine can be obtained as a professional degree and scientific degree. As a result, after completing the master's program in professional field, the master may work in positions such as senior physician, senior physician in health care, senior dentist, senior pharmaceutical, and the master in research field may work as the doctor-scientist, who carries out medical research as the main professional activity. The name of medical degrees is also different, for the professional field – clinical medicine, for the research field – preclinical medicine. Clinical medicine includes such areas of master's programs in medicine as health care, dentistry, pharmacological science; preclinical medicine includes clinical medicine, preventive medicine, dentistry, the science of human progress, the history of science and technology, biomedical engineering, social medicine and health management. The article examines the experience of implementing master's programs in medicine at higher educational institutions in China. The competence-based approach, forms and specialization of training in the organization of training and practicing students due to master's programs in medicine in ROC were determined.

SummaryHealth information exchange (HIE) facilitates the exchange of patient information across different healthcare organizations. To match patient records across sites, HIEs usually rely on a master patient index (MPI), a database responsible for determining which medical records at different healthcare facilities belong to the same patient. A single patient’s records may be improperly split across multiple profiles in the MPI.We investigated the how often two individuals shared the same first name, last name, and date of birth in the Social Security Death Master File (SSDMF), a US government database containing over 85 million individuals, to determine the feasibility of using exact matching as a split record detection tool. We demonstrated how a method based on exact record matching could be used to partially measure the degree of probable split patient records in the MPI of an HIE.We calculated the percentage of individuals who were uniquely identified in the SSDMF using first name, last name, and date of birth. We defined a measure consisting of the average number of unique identifiers associated with a given first name, last name, and date of birth. We calculated a reference value for this measure on a subsample of SSDMF data. We compared this measure value to data from a functioning HIE.We found that it was unlikely for two individuals to share the same first name, last name, and date of birth in a large US database including over 85 million individuals. 98.81% of individuals were uniquely identified in this dataset using only these three items. We compared the value of our measure on a subsample of Social Security data (1.00089) to that of HIE data (1.1238) and found a significant difference (t-test p-value < 0.001).This method may assist HIEs in detecting split patient records.

Abstract:
Abstract Objective This study evaluated the degree to which recommendations for demographic data standardization improve patient matching accuracy using real-world datasets. Materials and Methods We used 4 manually reviewed datasets, containing a random selection of matches and nonmatches. Matching datasets included health information exchange (HIE) records, public health registry records, Social Security Death Master File records, and newborn screening records. Standardized fields including last name, telephone number, social security number, date of birth, and address. Matching performance was evaluated using 4 metrics: sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and accuracy. Results Standardizing address was independently associated with improved matching sensitivities for both the public health and HIE datasets of approximately 0.6% and 4.5%. Overall accuracy was unchanged for both datasets due to reduced match specificity. We observed no similar impact for address standardization in the death master file dataset. Standardizing last name yielded improved matching sensitivity of 0.6% for the HIE dataset, while overall accuracy remained the same due to a decrease in match specificity. We noted no similar impact for other datasets. Standardizing other individual fields (telephone, date of birth, or social security number) showed no matching improvements. As standardizing address and last name improved matching sensitivity, we examined the combined effect of address and last name standardization, which showed that standardization improved sensitivity from 81.3% to 91.6% for the HIE dataset. Conclusions Data standardization can improve match rates, thus ensuring that patients and clinicians have better data on which to make decisions to enhance care quality and safety.

Abstract INTRODUCTION The Department of General Practice and Primary Health Care at the University of Auckland is considering developing a Master of Primary Health Care (MPHC) programme. Masters level study entails considerable investment of both university and student time and money. AIM To explore the views of potential students and possible employers of future graduates to discover whether there is a market for such a programme and to inform the development of the programme. METHODS Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 30 primary health care stakeholders. Interviews were digitally recorded, transcribed and analysed using a general inductive approach to identify themes. FINDINGS Primary care practitioners might embark on MPHC studies to develop health management and leadership skills, to develop and/or enhance clinical skills, to enhance teaching and research skills, or for reasons of personal interest. Barriers to MPHC study were identified as cost and a lack of funding, time constraints and clinical workload. Study participants favoured inter-professional learning and a flexible delivery format. Pre-existing courses may already satisfy the post-graduate educational needs of primary care practitioners. Masters level study may be superfluous to the needs of the primary care workforce. CONCLUSIONS Any successful MPHC programme would need to provide value for PHC practitioner students and be unique. The postgraduate educational needs of New Zealand primary care practitioners may be already catered for. The international market for a MPHC programme is yet to be explored.

Despite growing interest in Master of Social Work/Master of Public Health (MSW/MPH) programs, limited research literature is available on MSW/MPH graduates and none has examined field instructors’ perceptions of MSW/MPH students. This study describes the perceptions and experiences of MSW/MPH alumni and field instructors from a recently implemented MSW/MPH program at the University of Georgia. Electronic surveys were administered to 32 alumni and 34 field instructors; response rates were 71.9% (n=23) and 70.6% (n=24), respectively. Alumni reported satisfaction with the dual degree and utilization of both social work and public health skills in the workplace. Field instructors underscored the complementary skill sets of dually-trained students and noted the added value of MSW/MPH professionals in their agencies. Dually-trained MSW/MPH practitioners are uniquely prepared to address the need for transdisciplinary and interprofessional collaborations to address long-standing social and health issues.

Graduate global health education has grown in popularity over the past decade. The Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health has defined global public health competencies for Master of Public Health (MPH) degrees, but there are no similarly established lists of learning outcomes for other types of master’s degrees in global health. The objective of this study was to examine the program goals, curricula, and applied learning requirements for non-MPH master’s degrees in order to understand how global health is being defined and operationalized by these programs. We identified the 14 universities in the United States and Canada offering Master of Science (MS) or Master of Arts (MA) degrees in global health in 2019. Their program descriptions typically emphasize applied research skills, interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approaches, health disparities, and globalization. Both MS and MA degree pathways use a similar research-oriented core curriculum in which (1) foundational courses introduce the social and environmental determinants of health and global burden of disease trends in the context of globalization, global health ethics, and health systems and policy; (2) a research core develops competencies in biostatistics, epidemiology, and quantitative and qualitative research methods; and (3) a thesis or other written capstone project synthesizes and applies knowledge. Only 4 of the 14 programs require an international field experience, but most encourage applied experiential learning activities. Global health appears to be maturing as an academic discipline, with non-MPH graduate degrees in global health emphasizing similar knowledge areas, research skills, and competencies.

In Malaysia, prolonged unemployment following graduation has resulted in a growing interest among medical graduates in pursuing postgraduate research. This article offers educational resources in the form of 12 tips for medical graduates who plan to pursue a postgraduate science degree and their supervisors. It emphasises the reciprocal mentor–mentee relationship in the academic pursuit of a research project. This article is based on the author's personal experience of enrolment in a Master of Science (MSc) degree immediately upon completing the Doctor of Medicine programme combined with relevant educational theories. The 12 tips are arranged according to study progression from enrolment decision to the implementation of the research project. The author addresses the frequently asked questions of medical graduates. A learner-centred approach to research supervision is advocated. The educational challenges faced by research supervisors are discussed and approaches presented that may inform teaching efficacy to promote the agency of research supervisors. Pursuing a postgraduate research degree is a growing trend among new medical graduates in Malaysia. This article collates available literature and the author’s critical reflection to provide a practical framework that caters to the lack of formal educational resources specific to medical graduates in the MSc programme.

This editorial is devoted to celebrate the anniversary of the Aurora de Afonso Costa School of Nursing (AACSN), at Fluminense Federal University (FFU). Rich in history, the AACSN celebrates its sixtieth year in 2004 meeting the health challenges of our developing country. An undergraduate program was first offered by the School of Nursing in 1944. The AACSN alumni impact the State of Rio de Janeiro, the nation and the world in health care delivery because they are prepared to be highly educated nurse leaders in research, teaching, training and care. So, practicing nurses play an essential role in linking the findings of research with the communities in which they work.The AACSN completed 60 years and will continue with the primary goals of excellence in nursing education, research and practice, as well as a commitment to service. In 1979, the AACSN initiated its first graduate experience: a nursing service administration certificate course, lato sensu graduate program, leading to a specialist degree. It is increasingly understood that work-integrated learning (WIL) opportunities are critical in providing graduating students with employability skills which allow them to gain employment and effectively operate in work environments. This is particularly relevant within degrees such as public health that cut across very diverse fields of practice. Little research has previously investigated student perceptions post-graduation of skill development within public health degrees. This investigation aimed to identify the range of skills gained within a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree which graduates felt assisted them to obtain employment, and to determine the teaching and learning approaches that contributed to the development of these skills. Graduates responding to a questionnaire self-reported that they had good levels of both technical and employability skills especially in the domains: Informed Decision Making, Professional Practice and Standards, Lifelong Learning and Collaboration. Students agreed that there were frequent opportunities for applied learning and enablers to employment within their degree. However, graduates indicated that the employability domain: Commencement Readiness and confidence at point of graduation, could be strengthened. The implications of this research for the development of non-placement WIL experiences, capstone subjects, the overall curriculum and broader university student experience are discussed.

In this paper, we have explored the experience of studying part-time nursing master degree students and provided a basis for improving the training of domestic part-time nursing master degree students. Using phenomenological research methods, we have conducted face-to-face and semistructured interviews with 14 part-time nursing graduate students, including postgraduate motivation, obstacles, gains, and expectations after postgraduate study. Part-time nursing master’s graduate students are mostly motivated by promotion, self-improvement, solving clinical problems, and role models; barriers to entry include role conflicts, time pressure, economic pressure, curriculum settings that cannot meet needs, unclear responsibilities for training process management, and personal value (cannot reflect, etc.). Study gains include enhancing scientific research confidence, stimulating learning interest, and increasing professional identity. In the training of part-time nursing master’s students, we should correctly guide students’ learning motivation, mobilize social support, and solve students’ learning obstacles. The curriculum of part-time nursing master’s students should be targeted, along with establishing a training management system jointly directed by the training unit and the employer, improving the career planning of nursing master’s students, and making a good connection with the training of senior practical nurses.

Although research on evaluation instruction has increased in the past decade, little is known about evaluation education in Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH)–accredited schools of public health and master of public health (MPH) programs. In this study, instruction of competencies for program evaluators as enumerated by Stevahn, King, Ghere, and Minnema and pedagogies used by instructors to cover the competencies in the MPH degree within CEPH-accredited schools and programs are investigated. To understand these questions, a two-phase sequential mixed method design was used where the first was a review of 156 schools and programs and their 652 evaluation course offerings and the second consisted of administration of a survey to the 580 instructors who taught evaluation courses coded as either partially or fully focused on evaluation, of which 128 responded (22.07%). Results suggest evaluation courses in CEPH-accredited schools and programs cover many evaluator competencies, albeit to various degrees, predominately through lectures and reading materials.

Abstract:
This research aimed to examine the level of knowledge of master and doctorate students regarding scientific research ethics and the frequency of scientific deception identification in scientific publications. The research was conducted using descriptive methods. The group under examination consisted of 112 randomly chosen students who pursued their postgraduate degree in physical education and sports fields. The validity and reliability were determined in the framework of this study. Item total correlation and factor analyses were conducted for the construct validity of the assessment tool. The Alpha Coefficient, which was calculated for the scale reliability as .96, indicated the scale is valid and reliable. The Shapiro-Wilks test was also conducted to determine whether the data were normally distributed. Because the data did not exhibit a normal distribution, a non-parametric Mann-Whitney U test was utilised. “Writing more than one article using the same data”, “citing without providing a reference”, “reporting findings that are only consistent with expectations”, “publishing someone else’s ideas without providing references as if they are one’s own”, “presenting the same research in more than one conference or symposium”, and “publishing the same research in more than one journal” are the most non-ethical behaviours perceived in scientific research. All of the participants indicated that “presenting falsified findings of research and publishing someone else’s research with own name” represent non-ethical behaviours. According to the research results, “citing without providing a reference” and “writing more than one article using the same data” were the most unethical behaviours identified in scientific studies.

Abstract:
Every Master and PhD student at the Open University of Tanzania (OUT) has to make a research project as one of the requirements for completing their degree programmes. However, most students at the OUT face challenges in their research writing process due to lack of the research writing skills. This paper discusses the research writing skills and other challenges which the Master and PhD students face at the OUT. The challenges were learned from the researcher’s personal experiences of five years in supervising and training students on research methodology course for Master and PhD students at the OUT. Foremost, this paper presents the sections of the research proposal and research report which are mostly problematic to students and the author provides the suggestions on improvements. These sections include background information, the problem statement, research objectives, theoretical and empirical literature review, the research gap, research design, approach, strategy and philosophy, variables and measurements, data analysis, results and interpretation and conclusion and recommendations. Secondly, the paper also discusses other challenges which hinder students’ theses and dissertations timely completion at the OUT which include insufficient research orientation, lack of reading culture lack of facilitation methods’ integration for research course trainers, lack of awareness on students-supervisors responsibilities, lack of research completion strategy, low level of English language proficiency and lack of funds and health problems. Finally, the paper presents conclusions and recommendations for improvements.

Background:Recent research demonstrates the importance of targeting the built environment to support individual physical activity, particularly for people experiencing health disparities. Master plans to promote biking and/or pedestrians (BPMPs) are a potential method for environmental change. This descriptive study aims to provide a snapshot of plan attributes and better understand demographic, social and transportation characteristics of communities with BPMPs.Methods:We collected a census sample of BPMPs from 4 states. Population and commuting data were obtained from national statistics.Results:294 master plans were included, with most plans representing municipalities. 62% of plans targeted biking only, one-fifth targeted biking and walking, and 15% targeted walking only. The sampled locations have a similar demographic profile as the overall U.S. for median age and household income, people of color, high school education, and income inequality. The degree of racial diversity of sampled communities is slightly less than the U.S. average and the percentage of people who walk to work were slightly higher.Conclusions:Given that communities with master plans have a similar profile as the overall U.S., BPMPs could feasibly be spread to communities throughout the country. Further research is planned to describe BPMPs in detail toward informing future plan development.

In recent years, progress has been made to integrate the gender perspective into university curricula. Despite this, the lack in university degrees for initial teacher training is especially remarkable. This is because, together with families, teachers have the co-responsibility of educating new generations for the future. Issues such as the low presence of concepts related to gender in teaching guides or the lack of interest of teachers regarding their inclusion in classes lead to defining research to know and understand the conceptions of a sample of 162 teachers in the initial teacher training of a Bachelor’s degree on Early Childhood and Primary Education and a Master degree of Secondary Education on the incorporation of feminist thought in education. This research is a part of a broader doctoral dissertation and a research and development project. In general terms, from a quantitative, non-experimental approach, a questionnaire is designed and sent. The analysis includes a descriptive phase and a factorial phase that allows researchers to discover latent relationships between variables. Among the main conclusions, despite showing a relatively high knowledge of feminist theory, they confuse equity and equality. Students recognize the importance of having female references with whom to identify and they consider that feminist thought is a transversal content in education.

Purpose Limited attention has been given to the study of social marketing at the graduate level. Such a study not only reveals research interests and trends, but also provides insights into the level of academic evolution or maturity of the social marketing field. This paper aims to examine social marketing as the subject of master’s theses. Design/methodology/approach A search strategy found 266 social marketing-focused master’s theses completed from 1971 to 2015. These theses were analysed by host countries, institutions, disciplinary contexts and degree programmes for which they were submitted. Findings Only four theses were submitted from 1971-1980 and eight completed in 1981-1990. The number of theses increased to 35 in 1991-2000, 118 between 2001 and 2010 and 101 in the past five years (2011-2015). The USA was the leading producer of social marketing master’s theses, followed by Canada, Sweden, China, South Africa, the UK and Kenya. A majority of theses were housed in the disciplines of business, health and communication, and none of them was submitted for a Master of Social Marketing degree. Originality/value This is the first study that investigates master’s theses with an exclusive focus on social marketing. Implications for the evolution, learning and teaching of social marketing are provided.

However, not much is known of the job profiles and job careers of their graduates.Objectives: To analyse the job profiles and job careers of 175 graduates of the biomedical informatics bachelor and master program of the Tyrolean university UMIT.Methods: Survey of all biomedical informatics students who graduated from UMIT between 2001 and 2013.Results: Information is available for 170 graduates. Eight percent of graduates are male. Of all bachelor graduates, 86% started a master program. Of all master graduates, 36% started a PhD. The job profiles are quite diverse: at the time of the survey, 35% of all master graduates worked in the health IT industry, 24% at research institutions, 9% in hospitals, 9% as medical doctors, 17% as informaticians outside the health care sector, and 6% in other areas. Overall, 68% of the graduates are working as biomedical informaticians. The results of the survey indicate a good job situation for the graduates.Conclusions: The job opportunities for biomedical informaticians who graduated with a bachelor or master degree from UMIT seem to be quite good. The majority of graduates are working as biomedical informaticians. A larger number of comparable surveys of graduates from other biomedical informatics programs would help to enhance our knowledge about careers in biomedical informatics.

In order to explore the effectiveness of the 5Why-based nursing intervention method in blood purification nursing, this paper takes 108 patients from Changzhou Second Hospital in the past three years as an example for experimental analysis. Moreover, this paper uses mathematical statistics to group patients into groups, and the two groups of patients are comparable. After grouping, this paper conducts preexperiment processing and then conducts patient grooming through various basic tasks so that the test results have a certain degree of reliability. On this basis, this paper verifies the nursing intervention methods through controlled trials. Among them, the control group is treated with the hospital’s conventional nursing methods and allowed patients to master self-nursing methods, while the test group is treated with 5Why-based nursing intervention on the basis of traditional nursing methods. Finally, this paper combines mathematical statistics to evaluate the effect of blood purification nursing. From the research results, it can be known that the 5Why-based nursing intervention method has certain effectiveness in blood purification nursing.

Abstract Objective: To explore experiences of Chinese nurses who study for Master of Science in Professional Practice (health care) in the United Kingdom. Methods: A qualitative approach was applied, consisting of semi-structured telephone interviews (n = 8). The Colaizzi seven-step framework analysis method was used to extract themes. Results: The themes that emerged are as follows: (1) gains from studying overseas, (2) difficulties during studying, and (3) impacts of learning experience on work. The gains for nurses studying overseas include the improvement of scientific research capabilities, reconstruction of critical thinking, and development of reflection ability. Difficulties while studying mainly include language barrier, strict assessment, and boring life. Conclusions: The education of nursing postgraduate attaches importance to the cultivation of thinking. Nurses are very interested in nursing research including qualitative and quantitative methods. Nurses encountered language barriers in their study and life even though they knew a certain level of English.

ABSTRACT Background Although physician-scientists generally contribute to the scientific enterprise by providing a breadth of knowledge complementary to that of other scientists, it is a challenge to recruit, train, and retain physicians in a research career pathway. Objective To assess the outcomes of a novel program that combines graduate coursework and research training with subspecialty fellowship. Methods A retrospective analysis was conducted of career outcomes for 123 physicians who graduated from the program during its first 20 years (1993–2013). Using curricula vitae, direct contact, and online confirmation, data were compiled on physicians' subsequent activities and careers as of 2013. Study outcomes included employment in academic and nonacademic research, academic clinical or private practice positions, and research grant funding. Results More than 80% of graduates were actively conducting research in academic, institutional, or industrial careers. The majority of graduates (71%) had academic appointments; a few (20%) were in private practice. Fifty percent had received career development awards, and 19% had received investigator-initiated National Institutes of Health (NIH) R01 or equivalent grants. Individuals who obtained a PhD during subspecialty training were significantly more likely to have major grant funding (NIH R series or equivalent) than those who obtained a Master of Science in Clinical Research. Trainees who obtained a PhD in a health services or health policy field were significantly more likely to have research appointments than those in basic science. Conclusions Incorporation of graduate degree research, at the level of specialty or subspecialty clinical training, is a promising approach to training and retaining physician-scientists.

We describe an innovative, semester-long course in biology and communication skills for master’s degree students in biostatistics. The primary goal of the course is to make the connection between biological science and statistics more explicit. The secondary goals are to teach oral and written communication skills in an appropriate context for applied biostatisticians, and to teach a structured approach to thinking that enables students to become lifelong learners in biology, study design, and the application of statistics to biomedical research. Critical evaluation of medical literature is the method used to teach biology and communication. Exercises are constructivist in nature, designed to be hands-on and encourage reflection through writing and oral communication. A single disease area (cancer) provides a motivating example to: 1) introduce students to the most commonly used study designs in medical and public health research, 2) illustrate how study design is used to address questions about human biology and disease, 3) teach basic biological concepts necessary for a successful career in biostatistics, and 4) train students to read and critically evaluate publications in peer-reviewed journals. We describe the design and features of the course, the intended audience, and provide detailed examples for instructors interested in designing similar courses.

ABSTRACT Background: In the review of curriculum matrices, the elaboration of learning strategies that combine theory and practice is extremely important, allowing the building of new concepts and learning methods by the students. Team-based learning (TBL) is growing in academic centers and refers to the pedagogic strategy grounded in constructivism. The aim of this research was to describe the application of TBL in a Public Health graduate program. Methods: TBL was applied in a class with 22 students in the discipline “Quantitative Research in Health” of the Public Health graduate program (Master degree) at the University of Fortaleza, Brazil, in 2016. The discipline was structured in 8 lessons, approaching the thematic of quantitative research. Before each class the students were required to study the contents at home, a test was done for each subject in the beginning of each class (individually and then in teams of 5 or 6 students) and then a brief review was performed by the professor, where the students could ask questions and solve any doubt. At the end of the semester an evaluation questionnaire was applied with objective questions and a qualitative survey. Results: The application of TBL was done in a class with 22 students of the Public health Master Program, aged 22 to 36 years, and 83.3% were female. The method was well received by the students. All the evaluations and discussions went on without any problem. There were some complaints about the requirement to study at home prior to the classes. Students’ evaluation of the discipline and the TBL method was satisfactory with answers’ average score of 4.7 (scale 0-5). The lowestscore was achieved by the question number 11 (4.3) about the students motivation for their study at home. The comparison with the evaluation of the previous semester (where a traditional method was applied) evidenced higher scores for the TBL method. Conclusions: The application of TBL was satisfactory and the main difficulty presented by students was the requirement for previous study at home. TBL was better evaluated than the traditional method.

In the article we have analyzed the significance and importance of the “Infection Control” discipline in pursuing a master’s degree in nursing. The article states that the master nurse is the lead organizer and executor of activities related to the creation of a safe hospital environment, while the correctness and completeness of the actions at the workplace depends on the depth of theoretical knowledge and sophistication of practical skills. The paper specifies the general and occupational competencies, forms and methods of conducting lectures and practical sessions, describes the expected results of training, indicates interdisciplinary integration, draws attention to the problems of honesty in the performance of autonomous and individually research work by the seekers of higher education. It is noted that the practical health care needs such a master nurse, who not only possesses thorough professional knowledge, but also is capable to act clearly and quickly in an emergency, perfectly master up-to-date techniques of preventing, in particular, the healthcare-associated infections through the developed clinical judgment. It is the competency based potential capacity of the “Infection Control” academic discipline that makes it possible to realize these tasks. The priority area of improving the educational process is its practical orientation and significance.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to describe progress in an across sectorial approach to primary health care at the district health service (DHS) level in Thailand in response to recent innovative national public policy directions which have been enshrined in constitutional doctrine and publicly endorsed by the Prime Minister. This paper describes one response to the Prime Minister’s challenge for Thailand to become the centre of learning in the sub-region in health management. Design/methodology/approach The authors utilised a descriptive case study approach utilising an analysis of the Naresuan University initiative of establishing the College of Health Systems Management (NUCHSM). Within that case study, there is a focus on challenges relevant to the socio-economic determinants of health (SOED) and an emphasis on utilising Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) within the DHS structure. Findings The findings describe the establishment of the NUCHSM. A Master of Science (Health Systems Management) by research and a PhD degree have been created and supported by an international faculty. The Thailand International Cooperation Agency recognised NUCHSM by providing scholarships. International students are from Bangladesh, Bhutan, Kenya, Malawi and Timor Leste. Research consultancy projects include two in Lao People’s Democratic Republic; plus, a prototype DHS management system responsive to SDG attainment; and a project to establish a sustainable Ageing Society philosophy for a Thai municipality. Originality/value The case study on NUCHSM and its antecedents in its development have demonstrated originality in a long-standing international collaboration, and it has been recognised by the national government to provide scholarships to citizens of the countries in the sub-region to undertake postgraduate studies in health management. The concept of learning from each other and together, simultaneously as a group, through action research projects funded to enhance the evolution of DHSs is innovative.

Abstract A two-category taxonomic classification and a methodology for field description are proposed to aid in consistent identification and interpretation of humus forms for ecosystem research, surveys, and management. The classification uses the nomenclature principles of the U.S. soil taxonomy and the master organic horizon designations of the Canadian system of soil classification. It includes humus form taxa that have been recognized in Europe and North America. Recognized taxa are defined on the basis of observable and easily measurable morphological properties. Three taxa, Mor, Moder, and Mull, are recognized at the order level and are differentiated according to the type of F horizon and the relative prominence of organic-enriched A horizons. These reflect principal differences in the nature and rate of decomposition processes. Names of the 16 taxa at the lower, group level are created by adding formative elements to the name of the order. For example, groups of the Mor order are differentiated according to the relative thickness of F and H horizons (Hemimors and Humimors); degree of humification in the H horizon (Resimors); content of decaying wood (Lignomors); and moisture regime (Hydromors, Fibrimors, and Mesimors). Phases can be formed for any taxon to recognize important morphological properties that deviate from the taxonomic differentiae. Keys to the recognized taxa and descriptions of representative humus form profiles for each group are provided to assist in identification. Methods for describing, sampling, and surveying humus forms are presented to facilitate field examinations and subsequent studies.

Abstract Objectives To analyse the association between maternal physical activity status and birth size outcomes and whether other determinants of confounding variable such as pre-pregnancy BMI (PP BMI) and gestational weight gain (GWG) during pregnancy affect birth size outcomes. Methods A prospective birth cohort study. Subject's PAL was measured at the first trimester (T1) and third trimester (T3) during pregnancy. Birth size outcomes were measured immediately after birth. Results The analyses included 183 mother and infant pairs with a mean newborn birth weight of 3211.75 ± 434.70 g. Pregnant women at T3 had two times lower physical activity than T1 of pregnancy (OR, 2.18; CI, 1.044–4.57; P = 0.045). Maternal PAL at T1 and T3 were in sedentary level (74.30% and 77%, respectively). There was no association between PP BMI and physical activity level during pregnancy. We found no significant association between PAL during pregnancy and birth size outcomes (P &gt; 0.05 for all comparisons). However, we had a significant association with birth weight after our confounder adjustment (P = 0.032). There was a significant interaction between maternal PAL and PP BMI on birth weight and head circumference (Pinteraction &lt; 0.05). Conclusions Our study provides evidence that neither maternal physical activity status nor pre-pregnancy BMI in the prenatal period are associated with birth size outcomes (birthweight, birth length, and head circumference). Background: The Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine is negotiating with the College of Business Administration at Kent State University to establish a dual Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM)/Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree. Of the nine colleges of podiatric medicine in the nation, there are two schools that have a joint DPM/MBA program listed in their catalogue, but no joint program was operational at the time this survey was conducted. A telephone survey of the other eight podiatric medical colleges was conducted to obtain that information. This survey was used to assess further data for the exploration of a dual DPM/MBA program at Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine. Methods: A survey was sent out to 38 individuals who possessed both a DPM and an MBA degree. They responded to questions about why they obtained the business degree, how they are using their business degree, what courses in the MBA program are most relevant, and whether they would recommend that DPM students pursue a dual degree. Results: The majority of respondents indicated that they obtained an MBA degrees to gain a better understanding of the marketplace, to increase their income, and to better manage a podiatric medical practice. The respondents were generally very happy to have obtained their MBA degree and would encourage a dual-degree option. They admitted that a minor or series of courses with a business focus may be helpful to a DPM student who did not opt for an MBA degree. Conclusions: The positive survey results from respondents encourage continued research into a dual-degree DPM/MBA program. During research for a DPM/MBA degree, we feel a DPM with an MBA degree will allow our students to be better prepared for leadership roles within their community and administrative positions and to have a deeper understanding of the business of health care.

SummaryWe have created a Web-based repository or data library of information about measurement instruments used in studies of multi-factorial geriatric health conditions (the Geriatrics Research Instrument Library – GRIL) based upon existing features of two separate clinical study data management systems. GRIL allows browsing, searching, and selecting measurement instruments based upon criteria such as keywords and areas of applicability. Measurement instruments selected can be printed and/or included in an automatically generated standalone microcomputer database application, which can be downloaded by investigators for use in data collection and data management. Methods: Integration of database applications requires the creation of a common semantic model, and mapping from each system to this model. Various database schema conflicts at the table and attribute level must be identified and resolved prior to integration. Using a conflict taxonomy and a mapping schema facilitates this process. Results: Critical conflicts at the table level that required resolution included name and relationship differences. Conclusions: A major benefit of integration efforts is the sharing of features and cross-fertilization of applications created for similar purposes in different operating environments. Integration of applications mandates some degree of metadata model unification.

Good clinical skills should be preceded by good skills-lab as well. Therefore, before being used for practice in the treatment room, teaching aids should be used repeatedly so that health workers can master the desired competencies. The purpose of this research was to determine the effectiveness and efficiency of perineal repair model to the clinical skill learning of second degree perineum repair at Camar Room I and II of Arifin Achmad Hospital of Pekanbaru in 2017. This qualitative used a phenomenological design. The research was conducted from February to July 2017. The informants in this research were all midwives who worked in the study site amounted to 20 people. Data were collected by FGD method. The result of the research was that this model was quite realistic when grafted with pelvic model. As a second-grade perineal wound repair material, this model can also be categorized as realistic because it could be sewn on 1 cm of wound peaks, bleary, and subcuticular. The durability of this model was reviewed as low-cost with its good durability and safety.

Research about spirituality has grown widely in the past decades and the interest in health care is also evident in Portugal. This literature review aims to identify and to characterize Portuguese theses, dissertations, and papers about spirituality in health, and to provide a systematic overview of the knowledge concerning this subject. The search was conducted in February 2017 and updated in January 2018. Four independent reviewers screened and analyzed all citations, and a total of 76 results were included. Publications started in 2002 and include master degree dissertations (n = 37), scientific papers (n = 31), and PhD theses (n = 8). Papers were published in 24 national and international journals. Most papers were psychology- and nursing-related and had a quantitative design (n = 55). Samples were mostly composed of patients living with a chronic disease (n = 20) or elderly (n = 11). The Spiritual Well-Being Questionnaire (SWBQ) was the most used tool. A multidisciplinary approach is regarded as foundational in implementing spirituality in the provision of health care and the results underline the interest on this topic from other disciplines rather than nursing. Further studies must provide a deeper understanding of spirituality in children, adolescents or families’ perspective bringing new insights to advanced health practice.

Purpose We challenged a common clinical assumption that female cancer patients designate the same individual who provides them with primary support in advanced care planning roles. Patients and Methods During 6 months, we conducted a survey of female cancer patients seen in a women's oncology program. Women were asked to name their health care proxy (HCP), emergency contact (EC), and primary support, and to define their own meaning of primary support. The person identified by chart review (C-ID) as that patient's primary contact was also abstracted. The frequency that the same person served all three roles was determined. Concordance between the C-ID and surveyed responses was calculated. Results Two hundred fifteen (98%) of 219 women agreed to participate. The median age was 58 years (range, 29 to 85 years). Women were surveyed a median of 14.3 months since diagnosis (range, 0.3 to 214 months). Although 80.4% of women surveyed named a first-degree relative to fill all three roles, only 56.7% of respondents identified the same individual for each of these roles. For those in relationships, 54% named their partner in all three roles. The majority of women characterized support as emotional (46.7%) or as emotional and structural (22.6%). Concordance was strongest between the C-ID and both EC and HCP. Conclusion More than 40% of women with cancer in our sample did not name the same person for support and for advanced care planning roles. We also discovered a lack of uniformity in definitions of primary support. The implications of these findings on decision making and outcomes in women with cancer require additional study.

The purpose of the article is to present the significance of the introduction of the discipline “School Medicine” in the educational process in a pedagogical university. Review of the scientific literature on the problem. The problem of deterioration of the state of student’s health is highlighted. The role of teachers in health-saving issues is revealed. Research methodology and methods. Theoretical research strategies included the analysis of normative legal documents, pedagogical, methodological and medical literature on the problem of preserving and developing the health of the younger generation in the learning process. Empirical strategies included the development of the course “School medicine” and its testing in the educational process of the university. Research results, discussion. The content of the course “School Medicine” for the master’s degree program “Safety and Health” of the pedagogical direction is presented, the meaning of each section is revealed. The main reasons for the deterioration of the health status of students in Russia are analyzed. The article substantiates the need to organize a new level of interaction between medical-biological and psychological-pedagogical structures in educational organizations based on the ideology of a healthy lifestyle, prevention of violations and recovery. The normative documents defining the place of teachers in the organization of health-saving activities and monitoring the health of students, which are important components of the system of school medicine in educational organizations, are considered. The main issues of hygiene of children and adolescents, necessary for the development of this discipline by master’s students, are highlighted. The structure of diseases of school-age children is presented, which allows undergraduates to learn about the main deviations in the state of health of school-age children, learn to identify signs (symptoms) of the main diseases and master the techniques of their primary prevention. Conclusion. To improve the health of students, it is necessary in the future to interact with teachers who know the basics of school medicine, with doctors and social workers.

Background. The present study attempted to extend previous research on source monitoring deficits in schizophrenia. We hypothesized that patients would show a bias to attribute self-generated words to an external source. Furthermore, it was expected that schizophrenic patients would be over-confident regarding false memory attributions.Method. Thirty schizophrenic and 21 healthy participants were instructed to provide a semantic association for 20 words. Subsequently, a list was read containing experimenter- and self-generated words as well as new words. The subject was required to identify each item as old/new, name the source, and state the degree of confidence for the source attribution.Results. Schizophrenic patients displayed a significantly increased number of source attribution errors and were significantly more confident than controls that a false source attribution response was true. The latter bias was ameliorated by higher doses of neuroleptics.Conclusions. It is inferred that a core cognitive deficit underlying schizophrenia is a failure to distinguish false from true mnestic contents.

Background: The collaboration of health professionals across the interface of human, animal and environmental health, as embodied by the One Health concept (OH), is increasingly recognised as crucial for tackling diseases such as Ebola and COVID-19. This study was conducted prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, but in light of the current pandemic, the outcomes of this study highlight the need for educating Medical (MD) and Veterinary (DVM) students on the principles of OH. The purpose of this study was to determine the need for Interprofessional Education (IPE) initiatives that would familiarise MD and DVM students with the principles of OH, crucial to dissolving the siloes that have historically deterred collaboration. Method: We used a sequential explanatory Methods Research (MMR) approach design to evaluate the readiness of 428 students consisting of MD, DVM and dual degree Master of Public Health (MPH) students (MD/MPH, DVM/MPH) for IPE, as well as to obtain faculty perspectives across these disciplines, on the need for curricula inclusion of IPE and OH. Two methods of data collection were employed: A survey and 2 focus groups interviews. Results: The use of an MMR approach allowed us to comprehensively evaluate the need for OH education through the lenses of the students and faculty using a joint display that facilitated data integration and evaluation. Overall, the dual degree students had the greatest readiness for IPE, and MD students the lowest level of readiness for shared learning. The dual degree students had the most accurate understanding of OH competencies that consider the impacts of climate change, food security, antimicrobial resistance, health policy formation and zoonoses occurrence on human health. Themes derived from the focus group interviews revealed that faculty perceived OH education as crucial for preparing MD and DVM students for practice. Conclusion: The comprehensive assessment of the student and faculty perspectives, obtained using an MMR approach, illustrated that the incorporation of OH competencies within the MD and DVM curricula are crucial for preparing students for practice in the global environment. The dual degree pathway provides insight into how OH can be successfully incorporated within the curricula of these programmes.

Statistics from Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) Malaysia indicated that the construction sector suffers the highest level of occupational accident and fatalities almost every year. To overcome this problem, the government has come out with a legislative framework and action plans to deal with this situation. The study aims to identify the weaknesses of Malaysian employers and employees in implementing Occupational Safety and Health (OSHA 1994) in the construction industry and to highlight the responsibilities of both parties to comply as far as practicable of safety and health in construction site. Data were obtained via literature reviews and conducting workplace inspection. There is a high degree of consensus on the two important parties in assuming safety and health responsibilities who are employer and employee. The results indicate the weaker areas done by employers were: General duties of employers and self-employed persons to their employees; Duty to formulate safety and health policy; General duties of employers and self-employed persons to persons other than their employees; and Duties of occupier of a place of work to persons other than his employees. While the weaker areas done by employees were: General duties of employees at work; and Duty not to interfere with or misuse things provided pursuant to certain provisions. Thus, the suggestion for improvement towards safety and health practices was proposed according to the Master Plan (2005 – 2010) which introduced by CIDB. Therefore government bodies, contractors and consultants mostly agree on several stipulations under the Master Plan (2005 – 2010) subdivisions which are: Enforcement and Legislation; Education and Training; and Research, Development and Technology are the suggested areas of concern in which safety and health practices can be improved within the construction industry.

There is continued growth in the number of master’s degrees awarded in the life sciences to address the evolving needs of the biomedical workforce. Academic medical centers leverage the expertise of their faculty and industry partners to develop one to two year intensive and multidisciplinary master’s programs that equip students with advanced scientific skills and practical training experiences. However, there is little data published on the outcomes of these graduates to evaluate the effectiveness of these programs and to inform the return on investment of students. Here, the authors show the first five-year career outlook for master of science graduates from programs housed at an academic medical center. Georgetown University Biomedical Graduate Education researchers analyzed the placement outcomes of 1,204 graduates from 2014–2018, and the two-year outcomes of 412 graduates from 2016 and 2017. From the 15 M.S. programs analyzed, they found that 69% of graduates entered the workforce, while 28% entered an advanced degree program such as a Ph.D., allopathic or osteopathic medicine (M.D. or D.O.), or health professions degree. International students who pursue advanced degrees largely pursued Ph.D. degrees, while domestic students represent the majority of students entering into medical programs. Researchers found that a majority of the alumni that entered the workforce pursue research-based work, with 59% of graduates conducting research-based job functions across industries. Forty-nine percent of employed graduates analyzed from 2016 and 2017 changed employment positions, while 15% entered advanced degree programs. Alumni that changed positions changed companies in the same job function, changed to a position of increasing responsibility in the same or different organization, or changed to a different job function in the same or different company. Overall, standalone master’s programs equip graduates with research skills, analytical prowess, and content expertise, strengthening the talent pipeline of the biomedical workforce.

Medical Informatics has various research fields related to the use of technology in the field of health care with the aim of reducing costs, improving the quality of health care and reducing possible medical errors. Iran is a country where medical informatics is a fledgling field and few universities in This field is accepted by students. Due to the specializations and clinical facilities concentrated in each university, research is being done differently and with variety. At the same time, some important fields related to the field may be missed. Therefore, in this study, in order to identify the most researched fields in this field and the neglected fields of research, the dissertations done in the field of medical informatics in Iranian universities were reviewed based on the health informatics framework.Materials and methods: Defended dissertations available to master and doctoral students in medical informatics in the years 2001 to 2018 in the universities of Tehran, Iran, Tarbiat Modares, Shahid Beheshti, Shiraz, Tabriz and Mashhad were collected in this study. Three medical informatics graduates from different universities assigned dissertation titles to a competency and an area of skill based on the Health Informatics Competencies Framework. The second stage of the study was performed by two other experts (different from the previous three experts). At this stage, the opinions of three experts on thesis were compared. Each dissertation title was assigned to a specific competency and a specific area of skill by the majority opinion method. Results: The results showed that most of the master's and doctoral dissertations in medical informatics were in the field of information science and methods, in which area of skill (data analysis and visualization) and decision support systems and informatics for participatory health were more than others. PhD students and the area of skill (decision support system) and (Architecture of health IS) are more popular with postgraduate students, while PhD students at the University of Mashhad, Tehran and Shahid Beheshti in the field of methods and basic principles of activities More than other areas, information and communication technology, biomedical science and health were not considered. Shahid Beheshti University had the most activity in the skill (Realization of benefits from IS) in the master's degree and in the degree PhD in skill (Application Mathematical concepts) has the most activity, in total, the most Competencies in which dissertations have been done in the country Competency (information science and core principles and method s) have been. In the universities of Iran, Tehran and Mashhad, the frequency of dissertations in competency (core principles and methods) and in other universities in competency (information science) has been higher. Most research in the doctoral program in 2017 was related to the University of Mashhad. Most of the research in master's degree in 2014 was related to Iran University. Most of the research in the doctoral program in 2017 was related to Mashhad University.Conclusion: The results of this research can help field researchers in conducting new research in the field and can help in useful, scientific and effective design of research projects of researchers, university professors, educational planners and health care service providers. Also, due to the interdisciplinary nature of medical informatics, the use of professors in various fields and specialties in Iranian universities can be effective in defining topics for research for theses.

Abstract Background This study empirically estimates the magnitude and associated determinants of profit margins that medical providers earn from prescription drugs based on Taiwan’s pharmaceutical market. Methods Our main data set is from the population-based claims data compiled by the National Health Insurance Research Database covering three waves of price adjustment: July–December 2004, October 2007–September 2008 and October 2009–September 2010. Only drugs whose reimbursement prices were adjusted using the R-zone formula were used as samples for this study. By calculating the difference between retail and wholesale prices for 796 pharmaceutical products, we can estimate the profit margin determinants using the regression model. Results We found evidence that suppliers of generic drugs tend to offer larger discounts to medical providers than suppliers of brand-name drugs. In addition, the countervailing power of wholesale pharmaceuticals, as measured by the discount rate offered by pharmaceutical manufacturers, is positively associated with the degree of competition within the pharmaceutical market and the size of the market itself. Conclusions Our findings imply that the profit-seeking behaviour exhibited by medical providers is the engine of competitive forces in Taiwan’s prescription drug market. This creates financial incentives for them, which in turn influences their choices of prescription drugs.

Abstract Introduction Narcolepsy is a neurological condition that has been associated with considerable detriment to daily life including impaired quality of life, occupational and academic difficulties and adversely affected social and personal relationships. To date, there has been no systematic analysis of the literature regarding health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in Narcolepsy. This systematic review aimed to examine the impact of narcolepsy on HRQoL, measured through standardised HRQoL questionnaires such as the Short Form 36 (SF36). Methods Medline, Embase, Cinahl and Web of Science were searched for studies which investigated HRQoL in adults with narcolepsy. Studies were reviewed independently by two reviewers, and a random-effects meta-analysis was performed. The methodological quality of the included studies was assessed using a modified version of the Joanna Briggs Institute Checklist for Analytical Cross Sectional Studies tool. The impact of study variables and characteristics on HRQoL was assessed using Spearman’s Correlation analyses with adjusted r2 values. Results A total of 30 studies were eligible for inclusion in the review. Additionally, meta-analyses were conducted for the SF36 and the EQ5D. The SF36 meta-analysis identified that the pooled mean scores for the Physical Component Summary (45.91) were less affected than the Mental Component Summary (42.98). The HRQoL of people with narcolepsy was compared to general population norms (US, UK, France and Norway) and to people with chronic diseases including multiple sclerosis, diabetes, and epilepsy. Conclusion People with narcolepsy report significant impairments in HRQoL when compared to the general population and other chronic health conditions including epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, diabetes and hypertension, especially concerning their mental wellbeing. Further research is warranted to identify the longitudinal effects of narcolepsy on HRQoL and to develop a narcolepsy-specific HRQoL tool. Nursing, as a community service, is a profession that has existed since ancient times, with the desire to make people healthy, to ensure the comfort of people, to take care of the patient and to provide the patient with a sense of safety. Due to the impact of technology on healthcare, and with the increase in knowledge, many nurses today are seeking to work in an expanding, specialized or advanced practitioner role. Women's health nursing undertakes the roles of education, counseling, evidence-based work, research and scientific knowledge production, reducing the cost of care and increasing community satisfaction, with a woman-centered holistic approach at each life stage of women, in order to prevent diseases, and to protect and improve health. In developed countries in the field of Women's Health Nursing, such as the USA, England and Thailand, women's health nursing is a very special field of advanced nursing practices, which provides a woman-centered holistic approach, in the delivery of primary healthcare services, requiring master or PhD level expertise, and has dynamic&highly autonomous roles. Considering the developing countries, it is seen that women's health nursing is not really developed and it is carried out under the name of community-based nursing or "midwifery" in these countries. In 2011, women's health nursing roles and responsibilities were announced in our country, but its special fields were not included. In this context, it is necessary to develop special fields such as urogynecology, infertility, perinatology, gynecology and gynecological oncology, sexual health, menopause, as well as reorganize the roles and responsibilities of specialist nurses and all these should be supported within the scope of legal regulation.

Abstract:
The publications on elbow pain (EP) in overhead sports are increasing. The results of previous studies mostly focus on the influence of EP in the ball game and throwing sports. Thus, a bibliometric analysis of these publications may show the direction of hot topics and future research trends. The purpose of this study is to identify the research trends on EP in overhead sports. For the methods, the first step is to use the main keywords of ‘Elbow pain’ and ‘Overhead sport’ merging auxiliary vocabulary to reach the relevant global publications between 1970 and 2022 in the Web of Science (WoS) database. The literature data set is imported into EndNote literature manager software to remove duplication. Secondly, the duplication-reduced articles are imported to an Excel sheet according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria of this study. In the third step, VOSviewer software is applied as the main analysis tool in extracting data for analysis from the articles. Then, the main research results for three aspects are obtained by VOSviewer software which extracted and analyzed the parameters of author name, article title, publication journal, keywords, organization, publication country/region, and the sum of times cited from 455 qualified papers. The study found that the United States of America made the most outstanding contribution to this theme study. The research on EP in overhead sports in China requires more attention from scholars. EP in swimming is a new research direction worthy of attention. In conclusion, the research results prove the growth trend of EP in overhead sports. The EP problem not only exists in the ball game and throwing sports but also swimming. Sport commercialization and the involvement of related professional sports organizations determine the degree of EP’s attention in a specific sport and the development of solutions. The development of a region or country also affects the depth and scope of EP study. Clinical research development and in-depth exploration are one of the bases to solve EP problems. Non-clinical action is beneficial to EP patients, but it still needs to be explored and studied.

427 Background: Lynch defines patients with familial colorectal cancer (CRC) risk as those with two or more first- or second-degree relatives (or both) with CRC. They make up about 20 percent of all CRC patients. Also, first degree relatives of CRC patients have an increased CRC risk. It is our goal to create population based data on familial CRC risk in a German population. Methods: Incident CRC cases in Upper Bavaria are collected and their family trees constructed. The patient’s relatives are documented by name, address and date of birth, but without health related information. Cancer history is added to a family by a record linkage procedure combining members of the family trees with cancer histories in the Munich CancerRegistry (MCR). A specific data protection concept guarantees anonymity for families and their cancer histories. Prevalence of familial CRC risk in upper Bavaria and the posterior probability of a family to carry CRC risk can be inferred from the anonymous data. Strength of simple familial CRC risk detection tools can also be assessed. Results: Per year, 141 clinical departments and 24 oncological practices report about 1300 incident CRC cases (below 70 years) to the MTR. Recruitment of patients started in September 2012. During the first year, we recruited 456 patients in 27 clinical departments and 6 oncological practices and contacted 1,600 relatives. Participation of relatives is reluctant in spite different information sources (leaflet, call center, internet) on the study purpose are provided. Record linkage creates an anonymous collection of CRC family histories. 37 families with a CRC patient below the age of 50 are recorded. They are recruited into a psycho-oncological substudy. First risk estimates will be available end of 2013. Conclusions: For the first time, the study offers population based data on familial CRC risk in a German population of 4.6 mio. people. The results strengthen the concept of familial CRC risk for the development of appropriate preventive screening strategies.

Abstract:
Introduction: Global Emergency Medicine (Global EM) is growing rapidly as an academic niche in Canada. An increasing number of Canadian emergency physicians work internationally as part of their practice, and trainees consistently seek out international projects and electives. For the most part however, residents have had to create their own training opportunities as formal Global EM fellowship training has been lacking in Canada. To address this identified need, Queens University established a Global EM fellowship, the first of its kind in the country. Methods: The fellowship is designed to provide the skills necessary for an academic career in Global Emergency Medicine. Curriculum and objectives are modeled on similar well-established fellowships in the United States. Areas of expertise include emergency medicine systems development, humanitarian medicine, disaster response, public health, tropical medicine, research, administration and education. Fellows have the opportunity to tailor their training according to their specific interests within these domains. Importantly, the fellowship provides direct mentorship from academic global EM and public health physicians, and networking opportunities within the global health sphere. Results: The two-year fellowship curriculum is divided between: 1) coursework to complete a Master of Public Health (MPH) Degree 2) fieldwork 3) relevant international emergency medicine training courses and 4) clinical work in the emergency departments at the Kingston Health Sciences Center. The Queens Global EM fellowship admitted its first fellow in August 2017. To date, the inaugural fellow has completed the MissionCraft Leadership in Disaster Relief course as well as a Humanitarian U Disaster and Response course, in addition to submitting a research grant as a co-principal investigator, starting coursework for an MPH degree and giving several invited lectures on humanitarian medicine. The fellow also travelled to Lebanon to support research in collaboration with aid organizations responding to the Syrian crisis. Upcoming fieldwork involves teaching at a newly established emergency medicine residency program in Haiti as well as a humanitarian crisis deployment. Conclusion: In response to a lack of formal international emergency medicine training opportunities in Canada, Queens University has established a Global Emergency Medicine fellowship. The fellowship aims to provide protected time, access to field opportunities and dedicated mentorship to develop the skills necessary to succeed as an academic Global EM physician. We believe it provides a unique opportunity to significantly expand fellows experiences in global health fieldwork, education and research while continuing to practice in a Canadian tertiary emergency department.
