Abstract:
Finding an alternative or supplementary test method to evaluating the low temperature performance of asphalt is an area of considerable interest. This paper tries to explore the possibility of using the dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) method for assessing the low temperature properties of styrenebutadienestyrene (SBS) modified asphalt. In the study, 60/80 and 80/100 pen grade asphalt binders, named binder A-70, binder B-70 and binder C-90, are used to produce the SBS modified asphalt samples. After that, the low temperature performance of the asphalt binders is characterized by using bending beam rheometer (BBR) test. The results indicate that the low temperature performance of the different binders is related to the source of the binder. The low temperature performance of asphalt could be improved with the addition of the SBS. The DSR test is used to develop the complex modulus master curves for binders. Based on the principle of time–temperature conversion, the glass transition temperature of asphalt is calculated by the Williams–Landel–Ferry (WLF) equation. The glass transition temperatures (Tg) of base asphalt and the SBS modified asphalt are determined by the viscoelastic parameters of the master curve and the WLF equation coefficients based on the time–temperature superposition principle. By establishing the relationship between the critical temperature and the Tg of the asphalt binder, the effectiveness of the method established in this paper is verified. The advantage of this method is the ability to use the DSR test for the rapid evaluation of the low temperature performance of asphalt, which is able to reduce testing materials and save testing time as well. The glass transition temperature of the SBS modified asphalt is closely associated with aging degree, asphalt source and the SBS content.

Abstract:
SummaryHealth information exchange (HIE) facilitates the exchange of patient information across different healthcare organizations. To match patient records across sites, HIEs usually rely on a master patient index (MPI), a database responsible for determining which medical records at different healthcare facilities belong to the same patient. A single patient’s records may be improperly split across multiple profiles in the MPI.We investigated the how often two individuals shared the same first name, last name, and date of birth in the Social Security Death Master File (SSDMF), a US government database containing over 85 million individuals, to determine the feasibility of using exact matching as a split record detection tool. We demonstrated how a method based on exact record matching could be used to partially measure the degree of probable split patient records in the MPI of an HIE.We calculated the percentage of individuals who were uniquely identified in the SSDMF using first name, last name, and date of birth. We defined a measure consisting of the average number of unique identifiers associated with a given first name, last name, and date of birth. We calculated a reference value for this measure on a subsample of SSDMF data. We compared this measure value to data from a functioning HIE.We found that it was unlikely for two individuals to share the same first name, last name, and date of birth in a large US database including over 85 million individuals. 98.81% of individuals were uniquely identified in this dataset using only these three items. We compared the value of our measure on a subsample of Social Security data (1.00089) to that of HIE data (1.1238) and found a significant difference (t-test p-value < 0.001).This method may assist HIEs in detecting split patient records.

Abstract:
There is a great need for Master-Craftsmen who are highly valued in industry locally but are not afforded the same recognition as in Germany, so in order to encourage more applicants a bridging progression to a Bachelor’s degree should be devised. There are several paths to the education of engineers. Traditionally students of engineering attend secondary school from which they matriculate to a tertiary institution. In many countries candidates may opt to do an Associate degree articulating to a Bachelor’s degree. However, in some countries, it is possible to become an engineer without a traditional degree, usually in a more practically-oriented apprenticeship programme. In Britain for example, such candidates complete National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) in engineering while working at a company. NVQs typically range from Level 1 to Level 8, Levels 6 and 7 being equivalent to Bachelor’s and taught Master’s degrees respectively. In Germany, there is also an alternative qualification to the Bachelor’s degree, the more practically-oriented Meister (Master-Craftsman in English), both of which are equally recognized and respected professionally and are both pegged at Level 6 in the 8-Level German National Qualifications Framework (NQF). The MIC Institute of Technology has adopted a Master-Craftsman programme which is accredited by the German Chamber of Crafts and Trades. Candidates have to first complete the (trimester) Journeyman programme comprising three years, about 50% of which comprise industrial attachments/internships. Successful Journeyman graduates can progress to the Master-Craftsman qualification by completing an extra (trimester) year of study. This paper deals with the progression of Master-Craftsman graduates, through advanced placement, in a Bachelor of Technology programme. The Master-Craftsman curricula have to be mapped against a typical Bachelor of Technology programme to determine the gaps in mathematical, theoretical and other areas and mechanisms to fill any gaps.

Abstract:
Abstract Objective This study evaluated the degree to which recommendations for demographic data standardization improve patient matching accuracy using real-world datasets. Materials and Methods We used 4 manually reviewed datasets, containing a random selection of matches and nonmatches. Matching datasets included health information exchange (HIE) records, public health registry records, Social Security Death Master File records, and newborn screening records. Standardized fields including last name, telephone number, social security number, date of birth, and address. Matching performance was evaluated using 4 metrics: sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and accuracy. Results Standardizing address was independently associated with improved matching sensitivities for both the public health and HIE datasets of approximately 0.6% and 4.5%. Overall accuracy was unchanged for both datasets due to reduced match specificity. We observed no similar impact for address standardization in the death master file dataset. Standardizing last name yielded improved matching sensitivity of 0.6% for the HIE dataset, while overall accuracy remained the same due to a decrease in match specificity. We noted no similar impact for other datasets. Standardizing other individual fields (telephone, date of birth, or social security number) showed no matching improvements. As standardizing address and last name improved matching sensitivity, we examined the combined effect of address and last name standardization, which showed that standardization improved sensitivity from 81.3% to 91.6% for the HIE dataset. Conclusions Data standardization can improve match rates, thus ensuring that patients and clinicians have better data on which to make decisions to enhance care quality and safety.

Abstract:
The Bologna Declaration aims at harmonizing the European higher education structure. In accordance with the Declaration, biomedical engineering will be offered as a master (MSc) course also in Hungary, from year 2009. Since 1995 biomedical engineering course has been held in cooperation of three universities: Semmelweis University, Budapest Veterinary University, and Budapest University of Technology and Economics. One of the latter’s faculties, Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Informatics, has been responsible for the course. Students could start their biomedical engineering studies – usually in parallel with their first degree course – after they collected at least 180 ECTS credits. Consequently, the biomedical engineering course could have been considered as a master course even before the Bologna Declaration. Students had to collect 130 ECTS credits during the six-semester course. This is equivalent to four-semester full-time studies, because during the first three semesters the curriculum required to gain only one third of the usual ECTS credits. The paper gives a survey on the new biomedical engineering master course, briefly summing up also the subjects in the curriculum.

Abstract. Cells and tissues sense and respond to hypercapnia by global activation or down-regulation of hundreds of genes and switching on/off a number of signaling and metabolic pathways. We hypothesize for the first time that such complex rearrangements are hardly possible without subtle guidance by a specific master regulator which we suggest to name hypercapnia-inducible factor (HcIF). Whether there are structural and functional similarities between HcIF and HIF remain to be elucidated. However, there are reasons to believe that, as master genes, HcIF and HIF can cooperate or compete depending on the situation. Only further research will warrant existence of HcIF as a molecular master regulator of the response to hypercapnia. Key words: hypercapnia, hypoxia, gene expression, aging

Abstract:
In this paper the stability of a control scheme for bilateral master-slave teleoperation is investigated. Given the nominal models of the master and slave dynamics, and using an approximate feedback linearization control, based on the earlier work of Spong and Vidyasagar, 1987, a robust closed-loop system (position and force) can be obtained with a multiloop version of the small gain theorem. It is shown that stable bilateral teleoperating systems can be achieved under the assumption that the deviation of the models from the actual systems satisfies certain norm inequalities. We also show that, using the proposed scheme, the tracking error (position/velocity and force/torque) is bounded and it can be made arbitrarily small. The control scheme is illustrated using the simulation of a three-degree-of-freedom master-slave teleoperator (three-degree-of-freedom master and three-degree-of-freedom slave).

Abstract:
This paper presents the reformulation of the Integrated Master in Mechanical Engineering (MIEM) at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP) in two independent degrees (bachelor and master). The design of the new cycles of studies, triggered by decision of the Portuguese Government, followed the FEUP’s guidelines and led to a solution close to the one adopted by the existing integrated master. Therefore, the well-known “FEUP Mechanical Engineering product” is maintained, in general, since it is widely accepted in the job market, and improved by correcting some MIEM’s shortcomings. The bachelor is a non-professional degree of preparation to the master. It is clearly distinct from the cycles of studies thought at the polytechnic institutions, providing a broader scientific background, and not including design skills and dissertation. The master is a demanding degree, with innovative content and incorporating the value added by the excellence of the scientific research carried out at the Department of Mechanical Engineering. It is aligned with the needs of the industry, being different from other master degrees in the same area offered in Portugal, and designed to attract students from abroad. A SWOT analysis performed both for the bachelor and the master shows the potential of the two new cycles of studies.

Abstract:
Dissertação de mest., Engenharia Biológica, Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia, Univ. do Algarve, 2013
After completing my degree in Biotechnological Engineering, I did a professional training of 6 months in the enterprise Progenus S.A. (Gembloux – Belgium) financed under the Leonardo da Vinci Program and during two years and two and half months I was research fellow in the research project FCT: PTDC/AGR-AAM/102664/2008 with the title "Is Plantago almogravensis an aluminium hyperaccumulator? Elucidation of the tolerance mechanism using micropropagated plants" under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Anabela Romano. Currently, I am working in environmental remediation for metal removal and/or recovery using chemical and biological approaches, under the coordination of Prof. Dr. Maria Clara Costa – Centro de Ciências do Mar do Algarve. In Progenus S.A. my work consisted at genotyping and in the identification of SNPs (Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms) of interest and of major genes affecting the regulation, composition and percentage of fatty acids (FA) and of mono-unsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) in the milk cows. The results presented are part of my traineeship report. As research fellow, in the project FCT: PTDC/AGR-AAM/102664/2008, my work was based in the use of micropropagation techniques as well as subsequent assays to assess aluminium (Al) tolerance of Plantago almogravensis and P. algarbiensis that are two critically endangered plantain species. From this professional activity resulted three publications of papers in international journals with referees index (ISI) and the exposure of a poster at an international conference. Actually, I am working in the Environmental Technologies laboratory in bioremediation studies. This work includes enrichment of anaerobic bacteria communities from environmental samples and screening of their resistance and ability to recover palladium(II) from aqueous media. Simultaneously, other study is in course, which consists on the synthesis of metal sulphide nanoparticles using sulphide generated by sulphate-reducing bacteria (SRB). The obtained nanoparticles are being applied in the degradation of emerging pollutants.

In 1996, a new Software Engineering curriculum was launched at Universität Stuttgart. It was based on many years of practical experience teaching computer science and also on experience in industry where most of our graduates will find jobs. While the topics of this curriculum are not very different from those of computer science, there is much more emphasis on problem solving, software construction, and project work. In 2009, our traditional curriculum leading to the so-called diploma (equivalent to a master’s degree) will be replaced by a new curriculum according to the bachelor and master concept. This chapter describes both the old and the new curriculum, and discusses problems and achievements.

Abstract:
Service Science, Management and Engineering (SSME) is an emerging discipline which studies service industry under an integrated framework. SSME education trains scientists and skilled service workers to promote innovation and productivity in service industry. Although quite a number of universities started SSME programs years ago, most of them are still in the stage of experiment, and only address a small portion of the total subject. This paper first discusses the objectives of SSME education program—the abilities that service workers and scientists should have. Then, three types of foundation courses of the current programs are discussed in depth; the bachelor, master and PhD degree programs offered currently are analyzed, which include the course contents and teaching methods. Based on the inspirations from these practical programs, a unified model for SSME education is developed and presented, which proposes to unify bachelor, master and PhD programs, and establishes a new service science department comprising areas of service management, service engineering and design, service arts and humanities.

Abstract:
Abstract The name Incorporation refers to the major purpose of project, which it to early integrate university students into the business processes of a vertically integrated oil company. Developed jointly with partner universities, the project was created as a response to several challenges of the company related to providing cross-functional cooperation and training of highly qualified personnel for the company as well as soft early adaptation into company. Incorporation involves the integration of Industrial and Civil Engineering students into the phase of field concept design, and the further development of a strategy of a construction project based on the oil company's real case. So far, the Incorporation project has been applied in the perimeter of the Capital Construction and Conceptual Engineering functions of a major oil company, but as an educational tool it can be extended to other functions. As a result of two full annual streams of the project, the students of Master's degree programmes Conceptual Engineering for the Oil and Gas Industry at University of Tyumen (UTMN) and Industrial and Civil Engineering of Oil Production Facilities at Industrial University of Tyumen (IUT) developed key skills and got a system view for the value chain. This promotes the career guidance of students and their subsequent employment in accordance with their expectations and skills. This article highlights Incorporation background, its goal and objectives, principles and actors, includes a full description of one project stream as well as results over two years of Incorporation implementation in a large oil company. The purpose of the article is to demonstrate existing best practices in the training of hard skills and team as well as personal soft skills among students of specific Master's degree programmes who makes a talent pool of oil company.

In Britain for example, such candidates complete National Vocational Qualifications(NVQs) in engineering while working at a company.
