Abstract:
In order to promote the prosperity and development of the research on “regional tourism performance” and better guide the practice of regional tourism development, this paper gives a basic and comprehensive review of the research activities on “regional tourism performance.” Data were collected from 418 English papers (2004–2020) collected from the Web of Science database. This study uses CiteSpace and Gephi to analyze the development of the thematic research from four dimensions: research overview, knowledge base, discipline structure, and research frontier. The study found that “regional tourism performance” is still a hot spot of the future. The existing literature on “regional tourism performance” mainly focuses on constructing models, exploring influencing factors, and innovating management models to improve tourist satisfaction, enhance regional tourism competitiveness, and promote regional economic growth. Panel data, entropy index, data envelopment analysis, bootstrap truncated regression models, coupling coordination degree, and spatial variation are the main research methods. Since 2016, cultural tourism, heritage tourism, rural tourism, tourism destinations competitiveness, and regional tourism governance have become hot topics in the thematic research. This paper is helpful to improve the research efficiency of the thematic research, promote the theoretical results to better guide the practice, and improve the level of regional tourism performance. However, this paper has limitations in terms of concept differentiation and data accuracy.

Abstract:
The process of making career choices is complex since there are diverse factors affecting students’selection of programs when they enrol in higher and tertiary institutions. Just like in any other discipline,tourism and hospitality management graduates are affected by various factors when deciding theircareers post-graduation. Preliminary studies have shown that a significant percentage of tourism andhospitality graduates divert from tourism to some other, sometimes totally unrelated, industries foremployment. This study seeks to discover tourism and hospitality degree graduates’ perceptions andcareer attainment in Zimbabwe. The following critical questions were asked in order to achieve theobjective of the study; Why do they enrol for the tourism/hospitality program in the first place, that iswhat factors affect the students’ selection process of tertiary education programs? and why do someend up in totally different fields after graduating? Qualitative research approach was adopted in orderto understand the graduates’ perceptions, data was collected by the way of interviews. Data wasanalysed using the thematic approach. Findings revealed that while most of the graduates are employedin the tourism and hospitality industry in Zimbabwe, they are not satisfied with their jobs. Some feel thatthey studied tourism/hospitality as a last resort hence they do not have satisfaction while others areonly in the industry because they do not have an option. Poor working conditions and poor remuneration were also cited as causes of dissatisfaction. There are however a significant number who do not regrettheir career choice.

Purpose – The purpose of the paper is to present a review of the human resources (HR) research that has been published over the past ten years in discipline-based and hospitality-specific journals and identify key trends and opportunities for advancing future research. Design/methodology/approach – The paper takes the form of a critical review of the extant literature in the general HR management and hospitality HR management fields. Findings – A comparison of the findings shows a substantial degree of overlap in the themes and results that have been generated to date. However, several hospitality studies have identified a number of variables that appear to be particularly relevant for labor-intensive, service-focused settings. As such, context-specific factors should be considered in efforts to advance our understanding about the ways in which hospitality HR systems may impact a wide array of individual and organizational outcomes. Originality/value – The results offer a foundation for advancing future hospitality HR research.

Tourism and hospitality management education is relatively new in Nepal, with only four major public universities offering a bachelor’s degree programme. The curriculum is generally focused on managerial training and has a business orientation. In addition, the curriculum development process in Nepal follows a standard content-based method whereby individual faculty members are assigned to develop courses based on their expertise. This process does not permit input and/or engagement from industry stakeholders, which, given the applied nature of the tourism and hospitality discipline, is a major limitation. Recently, there have been growing interactions, especially by private institutions, to develop linkages with industry with respect to internships and job placement; however, an active role in curriculum input and development is non-existent in the country. This article presents a case study of industry involvement in tourism and hospitality management curriculum development in Nepal. The author outlines the background of the partnership, the process and the final curriculum product. This project is the first case of industry involvement in curriculum development in Nepal and has significance for other such partnerships in the country.

Paul Omerod's recent book, The Death of Economics, provides the background to this paper. As Omerod's book laments the state of mainstream economics it seems an appropriate time to subject economics for tourism degrees to similar critical scrutiny. There has been a rapid growth in institutions offering degrees in tourism, from none in 1985 to 40 and rising by 1995, and economics has generally been part of the package on offer to students. This paper starts by outlining three serious challenges to economics both as a discipline and as educational knowledge for tourism students. It then examines how the educational package of economics is framed, and from this concludes that economics courses may arise more from accident (or inertia) than design, or that the design may not be appropriate for current needs. It therefore suggests that there is considerable scope for the re-framing of introductory economics for tourism students. In the light of the criticisms of economics expressed in the first section, a model curriculum for tourism economics is proposed, and ways in which such a model might be promoted and developed are explored.

Globalization, which is one of the major lines of development in the sphere of education, requires that a common education space be created and different systems of education be made compatible. Russian HE institutions improve academic mobility through developing double degree programmes in partnership with non-Russian HE institutions, which brings to the fore such issues as a joint curriculum development, and alignment of core curricula of partner-HE-institutions though content cross-pollination. The article deals with the approaches to double degree undergraduate programme as developed by the Russian State University of Tourism and Service (Moscow) for the Bachelor in Management programme and the International Business School (Budapest) for the BA in Business Studies. In the article, the authors identify the key components of the double degree programme as jointly developed by the Russian State University of Tourism and Service and the International Business School: the specifics of the curricula and syllabi of the two institutions, the procedure of credit transfer, the content of the teaching materials of the disciplines involved, formative, summative, and final academic assessments. The authors emphasize the difference in the workload of the disciplines on the curricula, and conclude that the curriculum currently employed by the International Business School is more application-driven, while that employed by the Russian State University of Tourism and Service is more theory-driven. The authors also identify discrepancies in the number of elective courses, with the Russian State University of Tourism and Service offering 14 elective courses in 2011, which is 9 courses more than in 2010 and 4 courses more than offered by the International Business School.

The service sector provides employment for more than 70% of the active population in developed countries, in areas as varied as tourism, commerce, logistics, finances, services, and personnel, amongst others. Despite the fact that society increasingly needs more professionals who are oriented towards this sector, there are hardly any specific plans that will provide them with appropriate training. The appearance of service science, management, and engineering (SSME) has led to a significant advance as regards understanding the skills required by a service professional. It is a transdisciplinary field that integrates aspects of business management, along with information and communication technologies and engineering, and social sciences, in addition to providing the foundations for the growth of sustainable business. This paper presents a curriculum for the training of professionals in service engineering, which has been designed and taught at a Spanish public university. This curriculum, which the university created in collaboration with SSME experts and service sector companies, stands out for two reasons: the transdisciplinary approach employed, which is one of the features of this emerging and integrative knowledge discipline, and the fact that it is providing a response to the need for higher education curricula for sustainable business development. The paper describes the method followed to create the curriculum for the Bachelor’s Degree in Service Engineering, a comparative study with other related degrees, and the results of the deployment of the degree in terms of employability.

Increasing student persistence rates is imperative in higher education, as less than 60% of those who initially enroll in college full-time finish with a certificate or degree. Educators must ensure students are engaged with many facets of their educational experiences. Two strategies through which educators can engage students in the classroom, approaches to learning and learning styles, were examined. Researchers then assessed the relationships between these strategies and student success in the course (quiz scores and overall course grade). Findings suggest that the self-reported learning styles of students enrolled in sport management courses have little impact on student success. Thus, support was not found for the learning styles hypothesis. However, approaches to learning warrant attention, as students who employ strategic study skills are likely to achieve significantly higher course outcomes compared with those who utilize deep or surface study skills in the sport management discipline.

Abstract:
This study investigates the different challenges and opportunities encountered by Filipino flight attendants, who used to work with local airlines, to create empowerment sessions for tourism students who intend to be flight attendants but will later find themselves transferred to another field. The notion behind the empowerment sessions was guided by empowerment theories, in general. The researchers interviewed via an emailed list of questions guided by the research questions Filipino flight attendants who worked in a local airline until saturation was reached at five participants. The narratives from the participants were textually and thematically analyzed to surface themes relevant to successful career shifting among flight attendants. Focal areas of development were identified from the narratives and themes and mapped in a matrix aligning them with existing courses in the Tourism Management curriculum of St. Paul University Manila, and the relevance of those courses to flight attendants before, during, and after their career in the airline industry. The study found that there are different challenges awaiting flight attendants after they leave said careers. Some encountered the challenge of looking for other kinds of jobs in a different company, how to adjust to their new, and how to deal with new responsibilities in a different field as a supervisor or entrepreneur. The study identified ten focal areas of development that could be cultivated in empowerment sessions within existing General Education and major courses of the said degree program. The study recommends that the same mapping should be done in all programs to empower students from any discipline at any point during their formation in the university and to optimize the value of academic courses in the lives of students.

The problem of managing discipline in the hotel industry ranges from senior managers failing to manage discipline correctly, to junior/middle managers having insufficient practical experience and confidence to discipline effectively and justify the decisions they have made. Senior managers therefore lack confidence in junior/middle management's ability to manage discipline. The objective of this study is to provide senior management with simple, workable solutions to manage discipline correctly. This will enable senior management to delegate the management of discipline to junior/middle management correctly; to improve the confidence of junior/middle management in the management of practical discipline; to improve the confidence level of senior management in the ability of junior/middle management to manage discipline; and to .improve the ability of junior/middle management to correctly and confidently justify disciplinary decisions they have made. The study recommends that: senior management should take the lead and initiative to allocate time with junior/middle management to plan how to manage discipline effectively; the success of senior management's performance should be measured by how well junior/middle management achieve the performance competence to formally and practically manage discipline; senior management should provide structured feedback, coaching and counselling to junior/middle management on their performance; and senior management should coach junior/middle management on how to justify disciplinary decisions. The cost of this change, namely, coaching and influencing people, is not monetary, but one of commitment. It is the choice senior management should make. The choice is to want control or to coach, namely, to use power to change or influence change, to compel or develop people to take responsibility and ownership for what they were employed to do.

Event Management is a new medium, which has generated much enthusiasm from the events industry, as well as from the South African tourism industry, and is globally accepted as a developmental and marketing strategy from which destinations can benefit (Tassiopoulos, 2005: xiv). Event tourism has demonstrated significant growth and continues to expand as South Africa closes on hosting the 2010 Soccer World Cup. Events are different from permanent tourism attractions as they attract people to a shortlived, organised activity where visitors may participate, watch, view, learn and enjoy (Tassiopoulos, 2005: xiv). Event organisers have a number of goals and objectives that they need to achieve within stressful environments. Events offer unique opportunities to spread the tourism season for a particular destination and to promote destinations or attractions. They can also be used to stimulate demand by attracting extra, new or repeat visitors, while events can also be intended to generate additional revenue for a destination (Light, 1996:183). In order to ensure that events are successful, and to generate income for destinations, event practitioners are constantly under extreme pressure to perform. A combination of knowledge and skills is required to empower event practitioners to contribute to the industry and the community, at large. Therefore, tertiary institutions, such as the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT), should encourage active learning, facilitation, research, practical experience and engagement with its surrounding communities. This thesis focuses on a theoretical analysis of the events environment, as well as key factors that make this industry unique and justified as a separate discipline. The industry is hugely diverse and there are challenges, but prospective and current event practitioners who have established qualifications from registered institutions, can contribute to sustainable development and employment creation in South Africa. Carlos (2005: xi) states that for those who seek an exciting career, where their organisation skills and attention to detail along, with their creativity can be fully utilised, this would be their kind of industry; this is an industry that attracts several of the country's most vibrant students. Events Management is an industry, which is justified as a separate industry in South Africa.

There is a lack of relevant research of fixed assets revaluation practices in New Zealand. This study provides some insights as (1) why some New Zealand firms choose to revalue their fixed assets; (2) when will a firm revalue its fixed assets; and (3) whether fixed asset revaluation provides information to investors. This research attempts to explain the motivations of the management’s fixed asset revaluation decision in New Zealand. The empirical analysis includes five common explanatory variables, such as gearing (debt-equity ratio), liquidity, market-to-book ratio, firm size, and fixed asset intensity. In addition, the relationship between asset revaluation and share price movements of the firms are examined to determine the perceived usefulness of fixed asset revaluation information for the capital market in New Zealand. The study results show that fixed asset intensity and firm size significantly contribute to the revaluation decision. In contrast to the findings of previous studies (Whittred and Chan, 1992; Brown, Izan, and Loh, 1992; and Missionier-Piera, 2007), the level of corporate gearing is negatively related to the probability of revaluing assets for the sample of New Zealand firms in this study. However, the effect of the level of gearing on the revaluation decision is insignificant. The empirical results did not show any significant outcomes and relationships for investigated year 1998. This is because 1998 signified the end of recession and the beginning of economic growth in New Zealand. At the end of a recession, the changes in the country’s economic environment might have superseded individual firms’ considerations in management decision making process. The empirical results show that the practice of revaluation increased sharply with the adoption of the IFRS in 2005 in New Zealand. About 28.1% of the revaluation announcements under study were made in 2005 compared to just over 15.8% in 2001. Furthermore, the empirical results show negative returns accrue to firms prior to the publication of financial statements that carry revaluation announcements. These negative returns are reverted as soon as the revaluation information is made public. These gains are again maintained for at least a month after the announcements are made. Comparing frequent revaluers to first time revaluers, the results show that asset revaluation information is relevant to investors. Frequent revaluers gained only 0.8% announcement abnormal returns while First time revaluers gained over 4% in the 2005.

Abstract:
This research explores competitive bodybuilders in New Zealand and their identities. Bodybuilders have often been construed as being broadly similar – excessively muscular people, who build their physiques for sometimes questionable reasons, such as for a cover for internal insecurities. Bodybuilding is often considered acceptable for men because muscles are symbolic of masculinity – on women they are seen as unnatural and unfeminine. While external critiques have tended to portray bodybuilders in a negative light, phenomenological accounts have often emphasised participants’ positive experiences. Existing research concerning the identity of bodybuilders has only scratched the surface. Identities reflect an understanding of ‘who one is’ – the continuing meanings people associate with themselves and as members of social groups. Furthermore, bodybuilders are not just ‘bodybuilders’, they are also people. Bodybuilding is not their only identity, it is one of their numerous identities. This research explored not only the meanings participants attribute to bodybuilding, but also how it is lived and experienced within the broader self. A phenomenological-inspired, mixed methodological approach was adopted using quantitative and qualitative methods. Participants were male and female competitive bodybuilders of varying ages residing in New Zealand. They were at different stages in their bodybuilding career and represented a range of competitive experience. A postal questionnaire was completed by 382 competitive bodybuilders, and in-depth interviews were conducted with 32 participants. Photo elicitation was also used. A key outcome of this research has been to highlight the changeable, complex, contradictory nature of bodybuilder identities. Fluidity, ambiguity and pluralism existed amongst the everyday practices and identities of participants. Although bodybuilders shared commonalities, their identities were not identical or stable: bodybuilding could be about transforming the body,looking good, being competitive, creative and/or healthy. It could be a lifestyle, involve personal challenge, self-development, social belonging and friendship. Identity experiences could be influenced by personality, background, gender, sexuality, age, ethnicity, work, family and church. The bodybuilder identities were also found to be closely connected to participant perceptions concerning their natural body, genetic advantages and limitations. Furthermore, their identities were not depthless but entailed commitment, passion, mental, social and emotional dimensions. Competitive bodybuilding was a meaningful activity, that often left an indelible mark and continued to shape participant lives even after they had ceased competitive bodybuilding.

Abstract:
Empirical studies have established that tourism is a major determinant of economic growth and that international air services have a beneficial effect on the growth and development of an economy. It has also been argued that trade and public enterprise reforms in the service sectors, undertaken to a greater extent in high income countries, have had a positive impact on the sectors performances. This study analyses several hypotheses relating to Fiji’s tourism and air transport service industries. First the study examines the contribution of tourism exports to economic growth in the case of Fiji. Second, the study analyses whether the tourism reform adopted by Fiji in 1999 under the World Trade Organization’s General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS) has impacted on total tourism export performance. Third, the aviation-service growth nexus is investigated. Lastly, the effect of the aviation public enterprise reform activities on the export performance of air services is evaluated. Using time series annual data from 1968 to 2006, the Auto Regressive Distributed Lag. methodology has been utilized to estimate the contribution of each service sector to Fiji’s total service output. The results show that the tourism is a major determinant of growth in Fiji and that the aviation service-growth hypothesis is also valid for Fiji. The empirical results show that both the trade reforms in tourism and the pro-competitive measures undertaken in the airline industry, amongst other determinants, have not significantly created an impact on the respective export performance of tourism and air services. These findings provide key policy implications in the light of capitalizing on services exports as a major source of growth, particularly in developing island countries such as Fiji and the need to facilitate the strengthening of the market to boost the export performance of tourism and air services.

Abstract:
There has been growing interest in the field of business management in developing methods to improve management competency. One popular management development method has been executive coaching, but because of the unique needs of business executives, executive coaches are constantly looking for new and more effective methods to work with business executives’ life, career, physical, and psychological problems. There has not been an agreed upon solution discovered to solve this problem. On the one hand, it was proposed that there is a need for executive coaches to employ psychotherapeutic methods in coaching to meet the psychological demands of business executives. But on the other hand, there are numerous issues related to standardizing executive coaching methods, qualifying executive coaches, and resolving ethical dilemmas. The author of this thesis views this issue as an over expectation of society of individuals in positions of power and responsibility. This thesis uses social theories to explore the expectations behind the high demands on the performance of business executives, and to illuminate the degree to which executive coaching engages psychotherapy. The findings of this study show that certain themes such as business skills, leadership, self-development, success, interpersonal skills, and achieve work-life balance dominates the advertisements of executive coaching professionals. These advertisements also use rhetorical devices to make these skills seem attractive and important to possess, which inevitably impacts on the view of self of executives and stimulates their desire to self- improve. It was also found that 21.26% of the advertised executive coaching services could be promoted by psychotherapists instead.

This first comprehensive study of New Zealand news media plagiarism proceeds from the observation that plagiarism, if not demonstrably increasing, is more common than many practitioners would care to believe. It affirms that, contrary to conventional opinion, plagiarism cannot be understood or dismissed simply or entirely as the product of dishonest or lazy journalists. The study findings support indications of an underlying culture of copying within news media organisations—a professional ideology encouraging, if not overtly justifying, copying, and discouraging clear authorship attribution. The findings emanate from responses to a survey distributed to all New Zealand’s journalists, followed by in-depth interviews with five journalists identified as having personal experience with aspects of the practice identified in the survey, and a sixth with a journalist against whom a complaint of plagiarism was upheld by watchdog body, the NZ Press Council. The research analysed the just four complaints related to plagiarism brought before the Press Council since its 1972 inception, as well as another five much-publicised examples of the practice written about in the news media, to the present day. Of the nine cases examined, three reflected the most serious type of dishonesty associated with Jayson Blair of the New York Times—calculated theft of words as well as outright interview fabrication. The others can be categorised in a perceived less blameworthy variety of plagiarism, bedevilled by confusion of terms and newsroom pressures. But because much run-of-the-mill plagiarism is likely to have gone unrecorded and unnoticed beyond the newsroom involved, the true extent of any sort of plagiarism here could not be judged. What was possible in this research, was to gauge a sense of prevalence by asking working journalists not of their own sins, but of their experience of being plagiarised by others. Suddenly the numbers of plagiarism cases rocketed, not in a usefully quantifiable way, but clearly demonstrative of an extent sufficient to warrant analysis of nature and origin. These experiences were set against an American model that identified four antecedents of plagiarism behaviour, two individual—journalistic rationalising of dishonesty and problematic techniques—and two situational—definitional ambiguity and reporter aversion to attribution. What became clear in these analyses was that, though all news media organisations view plagiarism very seriously, few if any acknowledge their own role in perpetrating the practice, that journalism is an industry that proceeds from an ideology of matching and copying.

This thesis looks at the potential for using tourism as a poverty alleviation strategy in the context of Vietnam and the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS). The theoretical basis for this research stems for the growing recognition within development rhetoric of the place of tourism as a key industry in many developing nations, and the formation of a Pro-Poor Tourism (PPT) approach. The fieldwork section of this thesis looks at the barriers and opportunities for those in the poorer communities of Lang Co, a small town on the cental east coast of Vietnam, to supply the burgeoning tourism industry with locally produced products that are compatible with their current livelihood strategies. Results show that there are many opportunities for the poor to benefit from the rapidly growing tourism industry in Vietnam and the region. There is a strong recognition of tourism in national and regional development strategies, there is a rich cultural, environmental and social context driving the tourism industry and there are several initiatives taking place, such as the Vietnamese National Tourism Law, which include many elements of pro-poor tourism principles. However, this thesis has found many barriers also prevent poorer people from benefiting from tourism. In the case of Lang Co, the poor were often limited in their ability to participate in the industry by debt and lack of access to credit, lack of education and training opportunities, a declining natural resource base and by a lack of awareness and participation in the planning of the tourism industry. More widely, the tourism industry is centrally driven and focused on high growth and large infrastructure type developments which in some cases conflict with the principles of PPT and the ability of people at the ground level to participate. This research highlights the complexity of attempting to use tourism as a poverty reduction strategy given the wide range of stakeholders involved and various levels involved the planning and implementation of the tourism industry. The potential applicability of a concept of pro-poor tourism in a rapidly changing context such as Vietnam is contingent of the ability of the poor to have influence on an industry which is having an increasing effect on their lives and livelihoods.

Latin America and the Caribbean, unlike other regions, is still quite young demographically: people over age 60 make up around 11% of the total population. However, the region is expected to experience the fastest rate of population aging in the world over the coming decades. This projected growth of the elderly population raises challenges related to pensions, health, and long-term care. At the same time, it opens up numerous business opportunities in different sectorshousing, tourism, care, and transportation, for examplethat could generate millions of new jobs. These opportunities are termed the “silver economy,” which has the potential to be one of the drivers of post-pandemic economic recovery. Importantly, women play key roles in many areas of this market, as noted in the first report published by the IDB on this subject (Okumura et al., 2020). This report maps the actors whose products or services are intended for older people and examines silver economy trends in the region by sector: health, long-term care, finance, housing, transportation, job market, education, entertainment, and digitization. The mapping identified 245 actors whose products or services are intended for older people, and it yielded three main findings. The first is that the majority of the actors (40%) operate in the health and care sectors. The prevalence of these sectors could be due to the fact that they are made up of many small players, and it could also suggest a still limited role of older people in active consumption, investment, and the job market in the region. The second finding is that 90% of the silver economy actors identified by the study operate exclusively in their countries of origin, and that Mexico has the most actors (47), followed by the Southern Cone countriesBrazil, Chile, and Argentinawhich have the regions highest rates of population aging. The third finding is that private investment dominates the silver economy ecosystem, as nearly 3 out of every 4 actors offering services to the elderly population are for-profit enterprises. The sectors and markets of the silver economy differ in size and degree of maturity. For example, the long-term care sector, which includes residential care settings, is the oldest and has the largest number of actors, while sectors like digital, home automation, and cohousing are still emerging. Across all sectors, however, there are innovative initiatives that hold great potential for growth. This report examines the main development trends of the silver economy in the region and presents examples of initiatives that are already underway. The health sector has a wealth of initiatives designed to make managing chronic diseases easier and to prevent and reduce the impact of functional limitations through practices that encourage active aging. In the area of long term careone of the most powerful drivers of job creationinitiatives to train human resources and offer home care services are flourishing. The financial sector is beginning to meet a wide range of demands from older people by offering unique services such as remittances or property management, in addition to more traditional pensions, savings, and investment services. The housing sector is adapting rapidly to the changes resulting from population aging. This shift can be seen, for example, in developments in the area of cohousing or collaborative housing, and in the rise of smart homes, which are emerging as potential solutions. In the area of transportation, specific solutions are being developed to meet the unique mobility needs of older people, whose economic and social participation is on the rise. The job market offers older people opportunities to continue contributing to society, either by sharing their experience or by earning income. The education sector is developing solutions that promote active aging and the ongoing participation of older people in the regions economic and social life. Entertainment services for older people are expanding, with the emergence of multiple online services. Lastly, digitization is a cross-cutting and fundamental challenge for the silver economy, and various initiatives in the region that directly address this issue were identified. Additionally, in several sectors we identified actors with a clear focus on gender, and these primarily provide support to women. Of a total of 245 actors identified by the mapping exercise, we take a closer look at 11 different stories of the development of the silver economy in the region. The featured organizations are RAFAM Internacional (Argentina), TeleDx (Chile), Bonanza Asistencia (Costa Rica), NudaProp (Uruguay), Contraticos (Costa Rica), Maturi (Brazil), Someone Somewhere (Mexico), CONAPE (Dominican Republic), Fundación Saldarriaga Concha (Colombia), Plan Ibirapitá (Uruguay), and Canitas (Mexico). These organizations were chosen based on criteria such as how innovative their business models are, the current size and growth potential of their initiatives, and their impact on society. This study is a first step towards mapping the silver economy in Latin America and the Caribbean, and the hope is to broaden the scope of this mapping exercise through future research and through the creation of a community of actors to promote the regional integration of initiatives in this field.

Abstract Environmental non-governmental organizations (ENGOs) are groups of concerned citizens, working to improve the quality of life within communities, while preventing environmental degradation from economic activities. These groups assume an important role for populations inhabiting small islands, given their small territory, dependence on the import of goods and a focus on tourism to balance their fragile economies. In order to access the public commitment in developing sustainable tourism practices, key informant interviews were conducted with representatives of the ENGOs based on three archipelagos (Cabo Verde, Fernando de Noronha and Azores) aimed to characterize the ENGOs' mission and collect information on their projects and degree of involvement of local communities. An analysis of capital is applied to each research site in an effort to situate the role of ENGOs in their respective communities. The degree of commitment and official involvement in local tourism planning and management is different among the islands studied.

This chapter examines and compares closely two virtual travel enterprises, Couchsurfing.org (CS, USA) and Gilbut.net (Gilbut, Korea). These platforms allow people to offer free travel resources including information, accommodation and transportation. Both organizations have become a mission driven enterprises similar to a not for profit model, and are run without receiving any advertising funds from the private sector. Their different cultural orientation provides interesting insights that emphasize same core strategies to create a critical mass of highly motivated contributors. At the same time, cultural differences suggest that technical features and core designs should be customized according to the cultural preferences such as the degree of individual visibilities and strong/weak group identity. Comparison of both networks provides an invaluable insight to understand how critical it is to set up strategic online features in order to promote reciprocity and a certain degree of anonymity.

This book explored a range of theories, concepts, models and ideas that shape how we think about tourism, the way we do. In doing so, it revealed that tourism is a true multi-discipline. It is informed by such core disciplines as geography, anthropology, sociology, psychology, economics, leisure and demography, as well as by a multitude of other disciplines and fields of study as identified in Chapter 2. Historically, though, tourism studies has been beset by a high degree of silofication – a varied field of study examined strictly within the confines of individual disciplinary silos. Even when attempts have been made to be multi- disciplinary, the results have often been less than satisfactory, for usually one school of thought dominates, while others are placed in subservient roles. Add to this the force field of tourism, and it is not surprising that tourism studies have been labelled as fragmented and disjointed, typified by multiple communities of discourse with historically little cross-fertilization between communities.

The present case study brings reflection on the power of pleasure (joy) to better the classic education system. Whilst pleasure was overlooked as an instrument to make positive feedback in students for classic education, PANCOE (and the laboratory of pleasure) goes in the opposite direction. The laboratory of pleasure stimulates students´ skills and performance through the articulation of pleasurable experiences. The results notably show that those students who participated in PANCOE have better degrees than those who did not take part in the experiment. At the same time, the endorphins liberated by positive interactive communication paves the ways for the rise of pleasurable experiences which dispose from better academic performances. Originally PANCOE was designed to standardize the learning process of foreign students. Abstract:
There are presented the essence, basic terminology, methodology and scientific perimeter of the discipline "Ethno-cultural landscape studies". By use of a brief historic overview, there is traced the development of the cultural landscape as a scientific notion from its onset to present times. Regulatory postulates of UNESCO are taken into consideration, which explain the meaning of the terms "tradition", "intangible cultural heritage" and "cultural landscape". There are also summed up the practical and applied benefits from studying the discipline: a model for making an ethno-cultural landscape profile of the tourist site as a ground for creating unique tourist products based on traditional culture and turning folklore rituality into a generator of touristic plots.
