Abstract:
This paper investigates semantic categories of reporting verbs across four disciplines: Accounting, Applied Linguistics, Engineering and Medicine in research article genre. A general corpus of one million words and sub-corpus (for each discipline) were compiled from a total of 120 articles representing 30 articles from each discipline. In this study, two levels of analysis were conducted. Firstly, I randomly selected five articles from each discipline and read and reread each article identifying what reporting verbs are used, in what context are used and why such reporting verbs are used. This process enabled me to identify semantic categories of reporting verbs. Secondly, on the basis of the identified list of semantic categories of reporting verbs, I used the list in generating concordance output for quantitative textual analysis of each sub-corpus of the four disciplines, as well as the general corpus. The results of the study show that writers from both Accounting and Applied Linguistics are having a high frequency of reporting verbs than writers from Engineering and Medicine disciplines. It also shows that there are certain commonalities and differences between the disciplines. For example, all the disciplines are having frequency of the three semantic categories of reporting verbs but with certain degree of variations. The study recommends raising awareness of students on semantic categories of reporting verbs. The results could also help EAP/ESP teachers in designing course materials for discipline specific reporting verbs. It could also be helpful for textbook course designers in developing textbooks for teaching reporting verbs.

Australia’s current attempt to develop a process to evaluate the quality of research (Excellence in Research for Australia – ERA) places a central emphasis on the disciplinary organisation of academic work. This disciplinary focus poses particular problems for Applied Linguistics in Australia. This paper will examine Applied Linguistics in relation to this issue of discipline in two ways. First, it will examine ways in which Applied Linguistics has articulated for itself its disciplinary nature. In most formulations of the focus of Applied Linguistics, the emphasis has not been on identifying a discipline, but rather on identifying an area of focus. Such formulations necessarily cover a very diverse range of research methods, theories, etc. This approach can be seen as one of emphasising diversity and breadth within the field. Other attempts have been made to characterise Applied Linguistics in more discipline-like terms. Such broad characterisations however conceal a high degree of internal diversity. Applied Linguistics does not appear to be a ‘discipline’ but rather an interdisciplinary field of enquiry. Second, the paper will examine some possible implications of the diversity of Applied Linguistics for how it is positioned through the ERA process.

Textness: The degree of creativity of a text as marker of the boundaries between language disciplines In this article it is proposed that the traditional distinction between linguistics and literature poses more questions than it gives answers. In view of the modern academic context of focus areas and research programmes the focus should rather be on the similarities between the subdisciplines of language than on the differences. The growth of creative writing as science and the development of the discipline of language usage as applied in South Africa force us to look afresh at language-related subjects. Text is postulated as the binding factor between the study of linguistics, literature, creative writing and language usage. But text has to be defined in terms of the degree of creativity, thus indicating text as the binding factor of a given text, and creativity as the differentiating factor.

Abstract Work in contrastive rhetoric has often sought to examine the impact of culturally-based writing conventions on text production and has outlined cultural differences in texts in different languages. At the same time, the study of specialised languages has often claimed a degree of uniformity in text construction both at the level of culture and at the level of the discipline. It appears however that approaches which consider just culture or just discipline miss part of the picture. This paper argues that considerations of discipline and culture are complex and interrelated and that this complexity and interrelationship can be seen at several different levels in specialised academic texts.

ABSTRACTSocial class is a curious construct. In the discipline where it has traditionally been most at home, sociology, there has been a constant flow of commentary on its demise and, indeed, its death over the years. In applied linguistics, the situation is somewhat different in that there has been a degree of social classdenial, but more importantly, there has been social classerasurein that the construct has tended to receive little or no attention in publications that deal with language and identity and social life. Where social class is introduced into research, it is almost always done in a very cursory, partial, and superficial way. Still, there has been some research examining the interrelationship between social class and language over the years, and in this article, I provide a review of that research, focusing primarily on the period 2000–2014. First, however, I include a discussion of what social class means in 21st-century societies and a short review of class-based research carried out from the 1960s to the 1990s, the inclusion of the latter being necessary to an understanding of research after 2000. I conclude the article with some thoughts about future directions.

This paper investigates the use of reformulation markers as a common metadiscourse device in L1 English and Spanish and in L2 English research articles of a particular discipline, namely Business Management. These markers are considered procedural items, i.e. they encode information on how to process lexical meaning. The general frequency of use of the markers, the types of markers used, the functions most commonly performed and their (non-)parenthetical uses are compared in order to explore the degree of transference in their use by the L1 Spanish academics writing L2 English articles. The results are compared to similar studies on reformulation markers in general English and Spanish and also to studies in other disciplines. The results lead us to conclude that some general rhetorical L1 features are more likely to be adapted in the L2 English texts written by L1 Spanish academics than other more specific grammatical features.

A well-written abstract will surely promote the text attached to it more effectively. By examining the rhetorical moves in the abstracts of Chinese Master’s English theses and published research articles in applied linguistics, this study compares the practices of student writers and expert writers in fulfilling the rhetorical goal of abstracts to shed light on the degree to which students appropriate to the practices of their own discipline and to provide relevant ESP materials for both teachers and student writers of applied linguistics, especially those who write in English as a foreign language.

Over the past ten to fifteen years, the discipline of lexicography has changed almost beyond recognition. This change is due to the technological revolution which has computerized the lexicographers' working environment to a very high degree and which has permitted a veritable quantum leap in the amount and variety of resources that can be brought to bear on the lexicographical process. The most important of these resources are computerized corpora of real, mostly written, but now increasingly also spoken, running text. When the first entirely corpus-based dictionary—COBUILD1—came out in 1987, it was on the basis of a corpus of around 20 million words of connected text. Now all major British dictionary publishers use corpora of at least one hundred million words of text. Harrap/Chambers, Longman, and Oxford University Press have built the 100 million word British National Corpus (BNC), HarperCollins has the 200 million-plus word Cobuild Bank of English (BoE), and Cambridge University Press has compiled the 100 million word Cambridge Language Survey corpus (CLS).

The article deals with metadiscourse variation in academic texts across disciplinary boundaries. Its main focus is on the distribution of metadiscourse markers in Russian-authored academic prose in the field of applied linguistics and engineering. The study assumes that the distribution of metadiscourse devices is determined by disciplinary norms. The theoretical basis of the study is Hyland’s taxonomy of metadiscourse markers. With the aim of investigating metadiscourse in English-medium research article (RA) abstracts by Russian authors, the present study adopted a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods. The results revealed that RA abstracts feature four types of metadiscourse markers whose distribution varies across two disciplines representing the humanities and hard sciences. The study also investigated the degree of familiarity of linguistics and engineering scholars from leading Russian universities with metadiscourse devices and their awareness of the need to use them in research articles. To achieve this goal, a survey was conducted to obtain data on knowledge of metadiscourse as a discursive strategy. The findings carry therefore pedagogical implications for academic writing course designers and instructors and can enhance non-native English writers’ knowledge of academic writing conventions in the discipline.

The British Academic Written English (BAWE) corpus is a collection of texts produced by undergraduate and Master's students in a wide range of disciplines, for assessment as part of taught degree programmes undertaken in the UK. The majority of the contributors to the corpus are mother tongue speakers of English, but, in order to be included in the corpus, each assignment had to be judged proficient by assessors in the contributor's discipline, regardless of the writer's mother tongue. The corpus contains, therefore, only texts that have met departmental requirements for the given level of study. University writing programmes are typically aimed at undergraduate and Master's students, and it would be useful for writing tutors to know more about student assignment genres and the linguistic features of successful writing at undergraduate and Master's level. However, most large-scale descriptive studies of academic writing focus on published or publicly accessible texts, or learner essays on general academic topics, probably because there are practical difficulties associated with collecting large amounts of well-documented student output. This paper charts the experience of collecting data for the BAWE corpus, highlighting the problems we encountered and the solutions we chose, with a view to facilitating the task of future developers of academic student writing corpora.

In this paper we show the many faces of lying. We present a number of philosophical definitions of this speech phenomenon (from, inter alios, Aristotle, the pragmatists, and contemporary Polish ethicians), along with certain religious perspectives. Guidelines concerning the proper use of words recommended by the Polish Academy of Sciences are also presented. The aim of this paper is to show that irrespective of the discipline (philosophy, World Religions, linguistics), telling lies is viewed as something morally wrong. This is accompanied by a degree of logical reflection on lying, in particular with the proposal that lying be analysed neither in terms of syntax nor semantics, but on an ethical level.

AbstractThe discipline of translation studies has been recently challenged with powerful incentives from other sciences. This tendency has become visible especially in the context of more and more interdisciplinary or multidisciplinary methodologies, which have changed the profile of translation research to a considerable degree. It has also shifted the perspective with which scholars perceive key concepts of the discipline, many of which have become rather unpopular if not completely outdated. However, it seems true that instead of rejecting old terms translation scholars should try to reconcile the old and new by adopting more general frameworks that would allow them to re-interpret or re-write the existing knowledge. Moving intellectual investigations beyond the level of natural languages, semiotics may offer this framework. The article is an attempt to show the potential of a semiotics-based model of interlingual translation and to support the hypothesis that every act of translation is semiotic by nature. To this end it outlines the most significant ideas of semiotic approaches to translation studies and semiotics, with special attention to translation semiotics and semiotics of culture. This in turn helps to draft a working model of interlingual translation and its constraints.

The present article investigates foreign language teacher training quality enhancement by surveying pedagogical university students’ opinions on important aspects of the course of Introduction to Germanic Linguistics within the Educational Programme for Bachelor’s Degree in Education. The prime purpose is to study the perception of the above-mentioned optional course by Drohobych Ivan Franko State Pedagogical University (DIFSPU) students, with a focus on its content, organization and relevance to foreign language teacher training as well as on its professional competence formation efficiency. The complexity of the problems involved requires a combination of different methods, i.e. empirical, theoretical and statistical ones. 42 undergraduate DIFSPU students majoring in 014 “Secondary Education (English Language and Literature)” and 014 “Secondary Education (German Language and Literature)” took part in the experiment. The main survey tool was a questionnaire reflecting the parameters of assessing the course of Introduction to Germanic Linguistics. The data collected provides a solid basis for the revision of the course content, structure, organization, educational significance and efficiency, based on the direct participants’ assessments and comments. The students’ feedback reveals: 1) unanimous approval of the content and organizational principles of the discipline; 2) mixed opinions on its importance in the structure of the Educational Programme for Bachelor's Degree in Education; 3) variability of the course efficiency assessments. The data obtained allow for determining the conditions of an efficient implementation of Introduction to Germanic Linguistics into educational practice, such as prior familiarization of students with its aim and essence, emphasis on its applicability and optionality as well as its adaptation to the level and needs of future teachers. The data interpretation equally contributes to establishing the prospects of enhancing the course: 1) proportionalizing diverse types of educational activities; 2) increasing flexibility and variability in the educative process organization; 3) more efficiently interiorizing its content in terms of professional education priorities for future teachers of the English and German languages.

This article reviews the empirical research literature on foreign language (FL) learning and teaching published between 2005 and 2010 in Germany. It focuses on the empirical studies that have attracted the greatest interest among researchers during this period of time. These include research on educational standards, teacher education, early FL learning, content and language integrated learning, motivation and interest, intercultural learning, literacy, learning strategies and cooperative and computer-assisted language learning. The review reveals rich and diverse research studies in the field of FL teaching and learning. As a relatively young discipline without a longstanding research tradition, this field overlaps in its research interests and methods with other research fields such as educational psychology, linguistics and the educational sciences. The review also shows that the research into FL teaching and learning is to a large degree dominated by small rather than large-scale projects and is characterized by its largely practical relevance. The review ends with recommendations for future research as a conditio sine qua non for further development in the field.

Terminology is part of the program of university degree in Slovenia. The purpose of the paper is to study some parameters in terminology teaching within the framework of French legal terminology offered by the Department of Translation at the Faculty of Arts in Ljubljana. The program takes into account multiple aspects, which represent an important issue in translation. Mastering legal terminology is often a source of difficulties, since law, as any specialized discipline, uses its own vocabulary. The present article suggests an analysis of some specificities of legal terminology in particular for the teaching of the French legal system in Slovenian legal education.

Abstract This study applies the methods of variational pragmatics, a discipline situated at the intersection of pragmatics and variationist sociolinguistics, to historical data to explore the effect of the macro-social factors gender and region on request choices in Scottish and English private letters written between 1570 and 1700. It specifically examines gender variation regarding the choice of request strategies and of internal downgrading modification, e.g. the use of modal auxiliaries or hedges. Overall, the analysis only finds limited evidence for gender differences in the private correspondence data. The requestive behaviour of Scottish and English female and male letter-writers displays similar directness levels and both genders also employ mitigating modifiers to a similar degree. It is shown that the requestive style of women and men is determined by the situational circumstances of a letter rather than by gender. Moreover, when zooming in on the level of direct realisation strategies, the analysis provides evidence that the macro-social factor region has a greater impact on the choice of realisation strategies than gender.

The article analyzes the prerequisites and substantiates of the need for the development of an electronic (multimedia) course "Scientific and technical translation of the first foreign language" on the Moodle educational platform for training students of higher education (first / bachelor's degree) Specialty 035 – Philology, specializations 035.043 Germanic languages and Literature (translation included, first – German at the Yuriy Fedkovich Chernivtsi National University. In order to identify the level of development students' professional competence to perform various types of scientific and technical translation, an anonymous survey of applicants of the educational and professional program "German-Ukrainian translation and translation of the second foreign language" at the Department of Germanic, General and Comparative Linguistics was conducted in the online format using a questionnaire created in Google Forms. The results of the sociological survey of higher education students helped to identify the main problems in the study of scientific and technical translation, to reveal the level of formation students' professional competence for performing its various types: full written, annotative and abstractive translation. The confirmatory pedagogical experiment was conducted in the form of control work in order to check the level of formation students' professional competence of higher education in scientific and technical translation, who studied certain types of it within the related academic disciplines "Basics of field translation", "Translation and editing of professional texts". The results of the conducted control work, the analysis of the results of the applicants' survey, as well as the comparison of the educational and professional programs of the leading higher education institutions of Ukraine in the specialty 035 – Philology helped to confirm the relevance and feasibility of developing a separate electronic course "Scientific and technical translation of the first foreign language" within the framework of our scientific research for students of the first (bachelor) degree of higher education, which can be offered to students as an optional discipline.

AbstractBiosemiotics to date has focused on the exchange of signals between organisms, in line with bioacoustics; consideration of the wider acoustic environment as a semiotic medium is under-developed. The nascent discipline of ecoacoustics, that investigates the role of environmental sound in ecological processes and dynamics, fills this gap. In this paper we introduce key ecoacoustic terminology and concepts in order to highlight the value of ecoacoustics as a discipline in which to conceptualise and study intra- and interspecies semiosis. We stress the inherently subjective nature of all sensory scapes (vivo-, land-, vibro- and soundscapes) and propose that they should always bear an organismic attribution. Key terms to describe the sources (geophony, biophony, anthropophony, technophony) and scales (sonotopes, soundtopes, sonotones) of soundscapes are described. We introduce epithets for soundscapes to point to the degree to which the global environment is implicated in semiosis (latent, sensed and interpreted soundscapes); terms for describing key ecological structures and processes (acoustic community, acoustic habitat, ecoacoustic events) and examples of ecoacoustic events (choruses and noise) are described. The acoustic eco-field is recognized as the semiotic model that enables soniferous species to intercept core resources like food, safety and roosting places. We note that whilst ecoacoustics to date has focused on the critical task of the development of metrics for application in conservation and biodiversity assessment, these can be enriched by advancing conceptual and theoretical foundations. Finally, the mutual value of integrating ecoacoustic and biosemiotics perspectives is considered.

ABSTRACTSociolinguistics has never been a closed or autonomous discipline, but rather has considered relations between linguistic variables and so-called real-world variables, such as age, sex, and social class. Developments in discourse analysis now permit the analysis of the effectiveness of utterances in their real-world context. This study of communicative success uses as its data transcripts of eight aviation accidents, as well as transcripts of fourteen flight simulator sessions. The linguistic variable considered is mitigation; the real-world variables are success or failure of the individual communication, and peer judgments of the overall effectiveness of the simulator crews. To quantify the use of mitigation, a four-degree scale was established by using the judgments of several linguistic analysts and was validated against the judgments of members of the aviation community. Using this scale, a number of hypotheses were confirmed: (1) Utterances going up the chain of command are more mitigated than those going down, showing that mitigation is sensitive to social rank. (2) Utterances introducing a new topic are more likely to fail if they are mitigated than if they are direct. (3) Suggestions by a crew member to the captain are more likely to fail if they are mitigated than if they are direct. These results show a strong effect of mitigation on several measures of communicative success. This study shows that a quantitative study of communicative success is possible and suggests the necessity for further studies of this type as a necessary direction for discourse analysis. Некоторые лингвисты считают словообразование частью морфологии, другие – частью лексикологии, третьи считают ее самостоятельной дисциплиной. Однако в современном языкознании появляется все больше исследований, подтверждающих автономность словообразования. В данной статье освещается история изучения словообразования в осетинском языкознании с периода создания первой «Осетинской грамматики», которую написал А.М. Шёгрен (1794-1855) до ее формирования как особого раздела. Актуальность исследования обусловлена тем, что без знания истории формирования тех или иных словообразовательных категорий и процессов их дальнейшее исследование невозможно. К тому же вопросы, связанные, как с языковой динамикой в целом, так, в частности, и проблема словообразовательной динамики относятся к числу наиболее актуальных в современной лингвистике. В ходе исследования описаны наиболее значимые труды по грамматике осетинского языка на период с первой половины XIX в. по сегодняшний день. Выявлена степень разработанности представленного в них материала по словообразованию. Проведен структурно-семантический анализ использованной в них лингвистической терминологии. Определены основные этапы формирования словообразовательной системы осетинского языка. Особый интерес вызывает словообразовательная терминология, представленная в «Осетинской грамматике» А.М. Шёгрена, так как в ней все термины переведены на осетинский язык (тагаурский (иронский) и дигорский). В современных исследованиях данные термины не укрепились, однако они представляют большой интерес, так как проливают свет на семантику соответствующих слов в прошлом. Discussions about the place of word formation in the linguistic paradigm are still taking place today. Some linguists consider word formation to be part of morphology, others – part of lexicology, and others consider it an independent discipline. However, in modern linguistics, there are more and more studies confirming the autonomy of word formation. This article highlights the history of the study of word formation in Ossetian linguistics from the period of the creation of the first "Ossetian Grammar" written by A.M. Sjögren (1794-1855) to its establishment as a special section. The relevance of the research is due to the fact that without knowledge of the history of the forming of certain word-formation categories and processes, their further research is impossible. In addition, issues related to both language dynamics in general and, in particular, the problems of word-formation dynamics stay among the most relevant in modern linguistics. The study describes the most significant works on the grammar of the Ossetian language for the period from the first half of the XIX century to the present day. The degree of elaboration of the material presented in them on word formation is revealed. The structural and semantic analysis of the linguistic terminology used in them is carried out. The main stages of the formation of the word-formation system of the Ossetian language are determined. Of particular interest is the word-formation terminology presented in Sjögren's "Ossetian Grammar", since in it all the terms are translated into the Ossetian language (Tagaur (Iron) and Digor). In modern research, these terms have not strengthened, but they are of great interest, as they shed light on the semantics of the corresponding words in the past.

Abstract This article presents an analysis of the most recent statue of Bruce Lee displayed in the entrance to the Bruce Lee exhibition at the Hong Kong Heritage Museum. The analysis primarily utilizes O’Toole’s social semiotic framework as outlined in The language of displayed art (1994, 2011) in the tradition of systemic functional linguistics for analyzing the multimodality of sculpture, and provides insights into how the statue represents the kung fu legend Bruce Lee, who created the martial arts discipline of Jeet June Do. The article begins by first analyzing its sculptural features and then interprets these features against the sociocultural context of the city. The paper argues that the cultural background for the representation of Lee in the statue with its unique representational, modal, and compositional features testifies that meanings attributed to visual information in sculpture are to a large degree socially structured and culturally bound. It shows that the location of the statue and its features such as its gaze and torso can be better understood with reference to the political and cultural significance of Lee’s legacies, thereby enhancing our understanding of the social semiotic nature of statues as a means of commemoration- and a significant part of our cultural heritage.

AbstractThe present paper describes a reader-response experiment focusing on the perception of the genre of the fantastic. It also proposes an update of the genre’s structuralist definition to better conform to contemporary cognitive research. Participants answered questions relating to the interpretation of events and important symbols in a Neil Gaiman short story and were also asked if they considered the story “fantasy” or “realistic fiction.” Tzvetan Todorov characterized the fantastic as a hesitation between the uncanny (realistic interpretation) and the marvelous (supernatural interpretation). Neil Gaiman, a popular contemporary author of genre fiction, has utilized this hesitation between psychological and supernatural explanations of his stories to great effect. The results show a consistently higher degree of enjoyment in readers who were aware of the dual interpretation and partook in the hesitation. This paper also introduces the concept of quantum cognition into literary theory and explains the benefit of using terminology from this discipline in a reader-response context. The findings of this study could be the first step towards a better understanding of the different ways in which readers cognitively approach the fantastic or genre in general.

Abstract This study addresses the different types and implications of linguistic indeterminacy in Chinese law. It firstly draws on the studies of scholars of different disciplines, such as linguistics and philosophy of language, to provide a taxonomy of indeterminacy in language. It then provides examples of each type, highlighting the implications in law and legal interpretation. It uses linguistic data from various texts, such as statutory laws and judgements, and analyses them with various methods, including discourse analysis and corpus linguistics. This study argues that when the language of the law is indeterminate, the legal outcomes may be particularly uncertain. It suggests that although it is difficult to ascertain whether the degree of indeterminacy is higher in some languages more than in others, some linguistic mechanisms at the word-formation level in Chinese, such as portmanteaus and the modifier-modified structure, are remarkably ambiguous. When uncertain terms are in key parts of the law, the consequences may be more serious. The study of linguistic indeterminacy in Chinese has implications for the study of forensic linguistics, and Chinese studies in general.

This article provides the results of the synoptic-theoretical analysis aimed at identification and examination of the fundamentals of linguoaxiological potential of the English-language dramaturgical discourse, which is the subject of this research. The object of is the discursive-communicative vectors of axiological linguistics as a relevant scientific trend that is in the process of development of its own theoretical platform. At this stage, within the designated subject area, the question of viable factual basis for discursive-communicative linguoaxiological interpretation remains unresolved, i.e., which language material is appropriate to use in elaboration of the leading theoretical provisions of the new scientific discipline. The novelty of this research consists in formulation and substantiation of the scientific solution aimed at filling the methodological lacunarity. The goal lies in mapping and systematization of the discursive-communicative characteristics of the English-language dramaturgy from the linguoaxiological perspective. Based on the acquired results, the author specifies the conceptual-terminological framework for studying dramaturgical discourse, as well as provides arguments that justify reference to the used language material. The author specifies the discursive-communicative characteristics that determine the linguoaxiological load of the English-language dramaturgical discourse. The conclusion is made that dramaturgical discourse has a complex linguopragmatic, linguocognitive, and linguoculturological nature, which contributes to the formation of its polyaspect linguoaxiological specifics. Dramaturgical discourse is also a unique structural-compositional formation, being a system of interacting subdiscourses, each of which is characterized by a variable degree of engagement in the systemic implementation of linguoaxiological potential. The dramaturgical dialogue, as the central dramaturgical subdiscourse, has a relatively independent set of properties, which nominate it as a space of heightened axiogeneity. The conducted research contributes to the formation of theoretical provisions of axiological linguistics at the modern stage of its development, as well as further clarification of this subject field.

The present article aims to revise the different conceptions of one of the central terms of this linguistic discipline, the focus, to contribute to its terminological elucidation. After presenting the existing definitions of focus as a pragmatic function, the author proceeds to analyse the information structure of its syntactic manifestations in concrete communicative situations in an attempt to determine how the assignment of this pragmatic function is conditioned by the degree of newness of the information, and what its relationship with the notion of contrast is. The article deals with the phenomenon of communicative influence, where the main attention is paid to its theoretical consideration in linguistics and philosophy. The subject of the study was the theoretical basis of communicative influence. The purpose of the proposed article is to consider communicative influence in linguophilosophical aspect. A number of research methods have been used to achieve this goal: descriptive to shed light on the nature of communicative influence; specifics of the review of influence in philosophy and linguistics; a method of analysis and synthesis for the identification of the components of communicative influence and the combination of their single complex; modeling method for constructing the degree of suggestiveness expression; the induction method served to conclude the general conclusions. It is found that philosophers have focused their attention on the "magic" of the word when studying influence; close connection of spirit, soul with language, psychophysiological phenomena; inaccuracies and variability of interpretation of reality; language as activity, motives for action. In the linguistic aspect, in the light of new and emerging disciplines, attention is focused on the variability, imagery, associative potential of lexemes and linguistic complexes, which is a suggestogenic potential, which is analyzed at all linguistic levels. It is emphasized that language is generally a suggestive phenomenon. The authors propose to consider the impact actualizers (suggestems / suggestogens) according to the degree of suggestiveness manifestation, where implementation at two language levels is poor actualization, at three - moderate, more than three - strong.

Variants of tasks and exercises are proposed to visualize and record the presence / absence / degree of use of language indicators in students’ speech. The study of the ways of linguistic implementation of students’ legal competence will allow developing an effective method of defining the level of its formation.

This study examines the use of epistemic modality (expressions that signal varying degrees of certainty and subjectivity) by writers of English education research. Epistemic modality is a crucial, yet intricate, rhetorical device through which writers qualify their claims and construct a stance towards their texts and readers. Disciplinary and cultural norms influence the rhetorical use of modality in academic texts. To understand the impact of these contextual factors, linguistic descriptions need to examine discourse produced in individual disciplines and even subdisciplines. Using an exploratory comparative approach, the present study analyzes education research that is produced by native-English-speaking and EFL Arab writers: (1) to describe the discipline-specific practices that are adopted by native writers to manipulate the degrees of certainty and subjectivity in their discourse; and (2) to explore how these practices vary cross-culturally. Sixty research papers are analyzed using the finely grained model of Systemic Functional Linguistics. The findings show a disciplinary preference whereby native writers avoided expressing hesitancy and doubt and preferred a moderately confident epistemic stance to create convincing arguments. These writers’ epistemic style was also objective and detached. The EFL texts, in contrast, were less dialogic and had higher levels of confidence, explicitness, and subjectivity. Although advanced in their linguistic and disciplinary proficiency, the non-native writers displayed some patterns that are generally characteristic of other Arab and non-Arab L2 writers/learners, indicating the vital role that culture and nativeness play in rhetorical strategy use. The paper ends by highlighting the need for explicit instruction of epistemic modality in Arab higher education institutions in order for non-native writers to produce academic texts that are persuasively effective from the perspective of the international academic community.

The authors of the article consider integrative semantic mapping as an illustrative and schematic basis for the law students’ development of a professionally oriented English-language thesaurus of the topical field “Law”. The aim of the research is to study further development of professional and communicative English-language competence which allows ensuring the implementation of pragmatic and professional communicative tasks in simulated situations of entering into legal relationship by the students. Methodology. The methodological framework for the research is the cognitive and generalizing methods, such as the theoretical analysis of research works in linguodidactics, pedagogy, cognitive linguistics, and the prognostic methods. The research material was an educational and methodological complex on the discipline “Legal English”, used as part of the Bachelor’s degree program 40.03.01 “Jurisprudence”. Results. The paper analyzes an algorithm for the development of abilities and skills of linguo-cognitive processing of professionally significative highly legal English texts of a static nature (for intermediate and upper-intermediate students), and English-language videos of a dynamic nature of the genre “courtroom drama” (for advanced and proficient students) using integrative semantic maps. Analyzing their application features allows us to emphasize their main function, which consists in optimizing the development of information about the law enforcement and legal proceedings in English-speaking countries, necessary for the effective intercultural communication of future practitioners in various branches of law. Conclusion. Forming and developing the English-language thesaurus of a professional lawyer is one of important areas of modern linguodidactics. It has been proved that the optimization of this process has become possible thanks to the use of new learning technologies, in particular, integrative semantic mapping as a tool for verbalization of acquired knowledge, which allows consciously applying cognitively mastered information, competently verbalizing it in intercultural professional communication, preventing and eliminating possible communication failures.

AbstractFor a research article (RA) to be accepted, not only for publication, but also by its readers, it must display proficiency in the content, methodologies and discourse conventions of its specific discipline. While numerous studies have investigated the linguistic characteristics of different research disciplines, none have utilised Social Network Analysis techniques to identify communities prior to analysing their language use. This study aims to investigate the language use of three highly specific research communities in the fields of Psychology, Physics and Sports Medicine. We were interested in how these language features are related to the total number of citations, the eigencentrality within the community and the intra-network citations of the individual RAs. Applying Biber’s Multidimensional Analysis approach, a total of 771 RA abstracts published between 2010 and 2019 were analysed. We evaluated correlations between one of three network characteristics (citations, eigencentrality and in-degree), the corpora’s dimensions and 72 individual language features. The pattern of correlations suggest that features cited by other RAs within the discourse community network are in almost all cases different from those that are cited by RAs from outside the network. This finding highlights the challenges of writing for both a discipline-specific and a wider audience.

Методы петрографии давно и успешно применяются в геологии для описания и классификации горных пород. Во второй половине XIX в. они были заимствованы исследователями для изучения глиняных изделий, с целью определения компонентного состава сырья и минералов, использованных в качестве отощителя, а также для установления степени их изменений в процессе декарбонизации. Кроме того, петрография позволяет изучать органические остатки в составе формовочной массы с целью определения температуры обжига изделия. Со временем данное направление переросло в отдельную дисциплину, получившую название керамической петрографии и ставшей, по сути, археологическим методом изучения артефактов из глины, сочетающим традиционные археологические (визуальный, морфологический, типологический и т.д.) и естественнонаучные приемы характеристики керамики. В статье рассматривается отечественная и зарубежная историография, посвященная петрографическому анализу, преимущественно, обожженных сосудов. Главный акцент делается на исследованиях, затрагивающих основные вехи развития самого метода, а также характеризующих опыт его применения при изучении керамики античной эпохи. В статье также затрагиваются проблемы современного состояния керамической петрографии в отечественной науке. Petrography methods have long been successfully used in geology to describe and classify rocks. In the late half of the 19th century, they were borrowed by researchers to study clay products in order to establish the component composition of raw materials and minerals used as a non-plastic additives, as well as to determine the degree of their changes in the process of decarbonitization. In addition, petrography makes it possible to study organic residues in the composition of the molding mass in order to determine the firing temperature of the product. Over time, the approach has grown into a separate discipline called ceramic petrography and has become, in fact, an archaeological method of studying clay artifacts, combining traditional archaeological procedures (visual, morphological, typological analyses, etc.) and scientific methods. The article deals with Russian and foreign historiography devoted to the petrographic analysis, mainly of fired vessels. The main emphasis is placed on research that touches on the main milestones of the development of the method itself, as well as characterizing the experience of its application in the study of pottery making in classical antiquity. The article also touches upon the problems of the current state of ceramic petrography in Russian science.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper investigates the use of clause-initial constituents prefaced by topic-identifying expressions such as in terms of, in the case of and their Norwegian counterparts. The focus is on the nature, frequency and discourse functions of these in a corpus of published academic writing in English and Norwegian and across three disciplines. Such expressions are rather infrequent overall, but medicine uses them the least and linguistics the most in both languages. The functions of the construction can be compared either to those of left dislocation or to other types of clause-initial adverbials depending on the degree of coreference between the theme and some element in the rheme. The pattern with coreference is more common in Norwegian than in English. Generally, topic identifiers are used for announcing explicitly a theme that represents a topic shift or a contrast with the preceding discourse. The study contributes to contrastive pragmatics through its focus on the discourse-pragmatic functions of the expressions under study and the cross-linguistic comparison of this type of information structuring device across different disciplines of academic writing.

Language is a part of the spiritual culture of nation. Dichotomy language - thinking as a component of the basic triad of ethnolinguistics language - thinking - culture among the problems that are within this discipline, brings to the fore the problem of nomination, which requires interdisciplinary efforts (psychology and linguistics) and interlevel exploration (vocabulary, word formation, phonetics). The relevance of scientific work is due to the need for philosophical and linguistic understanding of the problem of nomination. The purpose of the article is to consider the problem of nomination and related issues in terms of psychology, linguistics, such as: significant, denotative and connotative meaning of the word; to compare the terms feature, sema, internal form of the word. Research methods. In the article as the main general scientific methods of analysis and synthesis are used, as well as linguistic – descriptive, structural and comparative and historical methods. Conclusions. Thus, the problem of the name, realizing the dichotomy of language – thinking, becomes one of the main problems of the culturological scientific paradigm. Scientific synonymy as one of the features of the modern metalanguage of science in the problem of the name distinguishes a number of related terms – feature, sema, internal form of the word. The concepts of semiotics are related to the problem of the name – significant, denotative and connotative meaning of the word, which reproduces the different degrees of connection of the word with reality. Connotative meaning makes it possible to highlight specific features of the Ukrainian language.

Abstract:
This article analyses the main legislation in Spain regarding Bilingual Education in the stage of Primary Education. Firstly, it divides Spanish regions into monolingual and bilingual. Later, it deals with the main legislation enforced in Primary Education, and carefully analyses three main aspects: teachers’ L2 level, teachers’ methodological requirements, and the non-linguistic discipline or disciplines included in bilingual programs together with the subjects’ language or languages of delivery and assessment. The first aspect, L2, is labelled following the different levels of the European Framework of Languages. As for teaching methodology, information has been classified as “not mentioned”, “recommended” or “required”. With regards to subjects, there are four different labels: “compulsory”, “optional”, “not mentioned”, and “not specified”. A high degree of heterogeneity is observed in two of the three areas analyzed. These differences among regions do not seem to be connected with their monolingual or bilingual nature. Finally yet importantly, it should be assumed that India and Spain are not close realities in some aspects. However, the study described above might help researchers, teachers or educational authorities to reflect upon some issues which are derived from CLIL(Content and Language Integrated Learning) methodology implementation in schools.

Statement of the problem. The most important place in the school curriculum should belong to the teaching of the Russian language. This is explained by its constitutionally fixed status, cultural and historical role, and the function of a means of interethnic communication, and the fact that Russian is a native language for the majority of the population of the Russian Federation. Account of objective realities focuses on the training of qualified subject teachers (and not the graduates who are almost helpless in linguo-didactic terms, excessively loaded with information of the psychological and pedagogical cycle). There is no doubt that when teaching future Russian linguists at the university, officially approved textbooks and textbooks are used first of all, sometimes supplemented also by the results of teachers’ own research. However, with the growth of the pedagogical baggage, it becomes clear that it is not enough to limit oneself to a circle of well-tested specialized literature, since changes are constantly taking place in the life of society and in the living speech and new phenomena are emerging. Having been unchecked earlier, they are often overlooked by some teachers, but may be well known to students. Such an imbalance is unacceptable. The purpose of the article is to analyze the texts of popular science sources regarding the possibilities of using publications of this genre in the practice of teaching linguistic disciplines. Research results. Popular scientific publications, especially those written by truly outstanding researchers, can become a significant help in teaching practice. This article discusses a number of popular science books devoted to the Russian language. When assessing their advantages or disadvantages (that is, the degree of usefulness of their application in the educational process), the author refers to his own scientific and pedagogical experience.

The problems of speech and language disorders on children with central nervous system disorders are dealt with in the literature of the subject from the perspective of various disciplines – medicine, linguistics, pedagogy, psychology and speech therapy. However, there are no clear definitions in the literature of semantic terms, the clinical picture, the substance of the disorder and their etiopathogenesis. Diagnosis of raised disorders in neurologically impaired children is a structured and multi‑specialist procedure using neurological, linguistic and psychological data, further impeded by ambiguity in the criteria for their description. In practice, a variety of approaches to naming and defining these disorders often stumbles on the discrepancies in the diagnosis, which leads to errors in communication between specialists. This article discusses the case of a four‑year‑old child with intrauterine hypothyroidism and second‑degree intraventricular haemorrhage with speech and language disorders, the example of which is terminological discrepancies.

In this chapter, we address, selectively, how applied linguists and those concerned with discourse analysis in particular, have recently approached the study of health care communication, especially in intercultural contexts, and relate these approaches to studies undertaken by researchers in other academic disciplines such as the sociology of medicine and by health care practitioners in the course of their own work. At issue will be questions concerning selected sites and themes, the degree of distinctiveness of research methodologies and different understandings of what counts as data, and questions concerning reflexivity and practical relevance in terms of the use to which findings can be put. Appreciating areas of difference and similarity is a necessary basis for establishing the desirable, but potentially problematic, partnerships among academic disciplines and between such disciplines and the work of professional practitioners, both in research and in professional development. As a sample site in the delivery of health care in the framework of cultural and linguistic diversity, we identify nursing, and use this site and its practices to advocate the collaboration of applied linguists, professional practitioners, and researchers from other areas of social science in the exploration of health care communication in multilingual/multicultural contexts and elsewhere.

Abstract:
The intensive development of the Ukrainian language at the turn of the 21st century due to its new status as the official language of independent Ukraine, the essential changes in Ukrainian society and Ukraine?s openness to globalisation have led to the forming of new disciplines in Ukrainian linguistics - neology and neography. They present two interconnected approaches to the analysis and lexicographic description of new language units (innovations) - the differential and the integral approach. The first approach involves the study of innovations in comparison with the existing units of the language, the search of criteria for determining their types by the features of their novelty in the language system and in text. The second approach focuses on the degree of stability of innovations in modern Ukrainian, i.e. the importance of concepts they verbalise in the conceptual and the linguistic worldview of the modern Ukrainians. The functional potential of a certain innovation in the linguistic activity of a society is an indicator of the degree of its stability in the language. It is a set of units consisting of innovation by paradigmatic, syntagmatic and epidigmatic (derivational) relations. The analysis of the word as the basic unit of Ukrainian nomination, prediction and evaluation enable the identification of other types of language innovations. The modern Ukrainian lexicon presents the following types of neologisms: new derivatives, new borrowings, neosemanticisms, neographisms, actualised and returned words. The application of the differential approach is advisable when gathering new language material, whereas the integrated approach is necessary when identifying the stabilised linguistic innovations, as it can be a resource for replenishing the general lexicon of a language. The results of the analysis of this new lexicon are presented in the differential and integral neological dictionaries.

The aim of the research is to determine the degree of influence of semantic diffuseness on the strength of the Art History terminology system. This paper examines topical issues of Art History. At the moment, the development of diffuseness of Art History terms can lead to the erosion of the Art History terminology system’s borders and even to the loss of the scholarly style of the language of the entire discipline. In this study, the following linguistic methods are used: semantic analysis, definitional analysis, contextual analysis, as well as elements of semasiological and cognitive analysis. The article reveals the specificity of semantic diffuseness, the reasons for diffuseness; violation of the consequences of the development of diffuseness in the terminology and terminological system of Art History. Scientific novelty of the paper lies in identifying ways to strengthen and structure the terminology system of Art History, taking into account the development of diffuseness in the Art History terminology. As a result, the difference between diffuse Art History terms and diffuse terms related to the terminological systems of other scientific disciplines was revealed, the difference between diffuse Art History terms and lexical units of general literary language was established, and linguistic criteria that allow diffuse terms to function in the Art History terminology system without the threat of blurring the boundaries of the Art History terminology system were highlighted.

It is a great pleasure and an honour to be writing for the fortieth anniversary volume ofByzantine and Modern Greek Studies. As editor of the journal for some twenty years, from 1984 until 2004, I have watched the journal grow in stature and in esteem over that period, and I am delighted to see it continuing to do so in the hands of its current editors. In the first issue I edited, I also contributed an article that attempted to reconcile some very different approaches to the history of Byzantine society and culture, or at least, to show that such different approaches were not necessarily mutually exclusive. If now rather out-of-date in its content, that article remains a useful baseline for discussing the relationship between empirical research and writing and theoretical reflection.‘“Jargon” vs. “the facts”‘?was a comment about the confrontation that at the time appeared to exist between, very broadly speaking, those who were interested in questioning the theoretical assumptions underlying and informing their research, and those who were not interested in such debates, preferring to see them either as irrelevant or as inaccessible. In my concluding remarks, I suggested that Byzantine Studies in the mid-1980s was in the process of what T. S. Kuhn would have called a ‘paradigm shift‘, that is to say, a process through which a traditional set (or sets) of assumptions and priorities, as well as theories and approaches, is replaced by different sets of ideas. While the changes in the nature of the subject that have occurred since then have not been particularly marked, there have nevertheless been some interesting and important developments that have altered the framework within which some ways of looking at the medieval eastern Roman world are carried on. The so-called ‘linguistic turn‘, for example, pushed Byzantinists, in particular, scholars of Byzantine literature and visual culture, to grapple with various aspects of what might very broadly be termed post-modernist and post-structuralist theory. This is evident in some of the writing and publishing of the later 1980s and 1990s in particular, and in some respects has now been incorporated into our ‘ways of seeing’ the Byzantine world.2In particular issues of intertextuality, of authorial intention, of reception, and of the relativizing of cultural interpretive possibilities (in respect of our own perspective) have become part and parcel of scholarly discourse, thus greatly enriching our discipline.3Represented by more recent work in literary studies and art history especially, I believe this shift also facilitated a much greater degree of cross-disciplinary reading, comparative thinking, and in respect of historical context and setting, a generally more open approach to the medieval west and the Islamic world in terms of both material and method.4

Linguistic politeness is considered a vexed question amid scholars and researchers alike which still, up to the date, a disputed phenomenon in the discipline of linguistics. This paper reports on a study that examined the gender differences in the stereotypical assumption that women are more polite than men in the use of request by the application of the Linguistic politeness marker (please) by Egyptians (Egypt, Mansours city). In the literature of linguistic politeness, the are many pioneers in the area as Culpeper et al. (2019) says that Maria Sifianou has enriched politeness research and pragmatics, viz. the inspection of the relationship amid universality and politeness. Furthermore, Leech (2014, p. 162) ,in The Pragmatics of Politeness, points out three different degrees of politeness from semantic sight in the account of the linguistic politeness marker "please" (a) Politeness marker (b) Illocutionary marker and (c) Information question marker. However, the linguistic politeness marker "please" is used to be uttered in requests as a general term to mitigate or soften the directive force of the speech event to addressee. Researchers and scholars who address the speech event request have spent considerable effort in classifying the variety of strategies for requesting in Anglophone. Moreover, Brown and Levinson’s model (1987, p. 68–9) proposed five “superstrategies” for doing FTAs, of which requests were a paradigm case. In this study, the data were collected from the Egyptians riders who were going to their destinations in Mansoura city, Egypt. There are two groups (a) women (100) and (b) men (100). The participants are speaking in the local vernacular Arabic (Egyptian dialect). They came from random social background. Further, there are a table and a chart to illustrate the gender differences amid the two groups of women and men.

This article presents a part of a comprehensive research on lexicographic portraying of Russian personal pronouns in the context of the communicative-pragmatic, linguoculturological, and cognitive linguistic approaches. The paper aimed to describe semantic, stylistic, and functional properties of Russian phraseological units containing the pronoun ya (‘I’) and its case forms in terms of representation of key culturally significant ideas of the Russian linguistic worldview. The author applied the pronoun referential analysis methodology developed on the basis of E.V. Paducheva’s ideas. The material included data of Russian explanatory dictionaries as well as a semantic and a phraseological dictionary. The usage examples were extracted from the Russian National Corpus. The scientific value of this paper consists in introducing a new aspect of Russian personal pronouns analysis, namely, the cultural significance of phraseological units with the pronominal component ya in the Russian linguistic worldview. It is shown that phraseological units containing the pronoun ya and its case forms have considerable conceptual and evaluative potential for representing culturally significant ideas and attitudes of the Russian linguistic worldview. These phraseological units embody empathic attitude (estimation of the degree of a speaker’s personal involvement in the situation) and the idea of primary importance of the speaker’s world to him/herself. The human ‘I’ in phraseology is a natural measure of norms and values, a criterion of one’s attitude to outward things. The paper makes a certain contribution to the theory and practice of integral description of language as well as to the linguoculturological study on Russian phraseological units. In terms of practice, the results can be used in teaching linguoculturological disciplines at universities and compiling a new type of dictionaries, as well as in forensic linguistics.

Evolutionary approaches to cultural change are increasingly influential, and many scientists believe that a ‘grand synthesis’ is now in sight. The papers in this Theme Issue, which derives from a symposium held by the AHRC Centre for the Evolution of Cultural Diversity (University College London) in December 2008, focus on how the phylogenetic tree-building and network-based techniques used to estimate descent relationships in biology can be adapted to reconstruct cultural histories, where some degree of inter-societal diffusion will almost inevitably be superimposed on any deeper signal of a historical branching process. The disciplines represented include the three most purely ‘cultural’ fields from the four-field model of anthropology (cultural anthropology, archaeology and linguistic anthropology). In this short introduction, some context is provided from the history of anthropology, and key issues raised by the papers are highlighted.

We pay attention to the two competing trends within each functional style; note the ter-minological diversity when naming publicistic style. We analyze pragmatic and semantic peculiar-ities of the mass information language. We substantiate the expediency of using informational and analytical Mass Media texts as the linguistic material in classes with Master’s Degree Students in “International Relations” programme of Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation. We pay attention to the professional and communicative competencies which should be acquired by students while mastering the “Foreign language of professional activity” discipline. We focus on the need to comply with meaningful and linguistic criteria in the selection of authentic texts for Master’s Degree Students. On the example of articles from the magazine “The Economist”, we consider the system of exercises and tasks for the professional-oriented reading skills development among students for more effective reading skills teaching. We differentiate the terms “exercise” and “task”, as well as “skim reading” and “reading for detail”. We substantiate the expediency of methodical processing of Mass Media texts in accordance with the linguistic level of Master’s Degree Students. We prove the necessity of system compliance of pre-text, text and after-text tasks and exercises based on the texts on the topic: “Migration: causes, problems and ways of solving it”. We give a generic list of tasks and exercises taking into account the three-stage system.
