Abstract:
Disciplinary isolation has facilitated health education, public health, and physical education professionals to sometimes pursue common goals without the benefit of interdisciplinary collaboration and perspectives. Recognizing the potential benefits of interdisciplinary collaboration efforts to solve complex problems, faculty members at the University of West Florida developed an innovative doctoral program combining the disciplines of physical education, health education, and health promotion. Beginning with the salient common ground of issues related to engagement in physical activity, the program is designed to explore, compare, and contrast best practices in research and practice from each discipline. Benefits include synergistic solutions to common problems, graduates who transcend traditional professional silos to be more impactful, and the creation of innovative research endeavors. Graduates also find that they meet contemporary workforce needs outside of academia and are more marketable as faculty in kinesiology and health-related departments because of their rich, multidisciplinary knowledge base. Challenges to program implementation include prior student socialization from traditional studies in their disciplines and faculty working to move beyond their professional comfort zones to collaboratively mentor students in the program.

Abstract:
Physical activity, campus recreation (CR) use, body mass index (BMI), and varied health indices were compared between academic discipline groups and sex. Participants ( n = 219) were classified as AD I (kinesiology and physical education majors), AD II (health science majors and nursing majors), and AD III (representative sample of non-health-related majors) to make between-group comparisons based on the amount of emphasis placed on physical activity and health-related content within different disciplines. Significant differences ( p < .05) were found between the academic discipline groups for International Physical Activity Questionnaire scores, CR minutes, CR days, CR time per day, vigorous physical activity (VPA), and perceived-health score; and between sex for BMI, VPA, sitting, fiber intake, and fruit and vegetable intake. The results indicate a positive relationship between the emphasis placed physical activity and health within an academic discipline and the degree to which students participate in physical activity, positive health behaviors, and perceived health.

Background. To accurately evaluate sports social discipline’s academic influence in China, a model of academic influence evaluation of sports social discipline in China based on bibliometrics is proposed. Objective. A statistical model of the academic influence of sports social discipline is constructed, the word frequency statistics method is used to measure the literature, and the semantic characteristic quantity of the sports social discipline academic influence is extracted, using the literature method and logical analysis method to analyze sports’ social value in the Internet era from healthy sports. The combination of sports and medical treatment can comprehensively promote physical and mental health. Methods. The dual semantic feature decomposition method is used to analyze sports social discipline’s academic influence. The statistical analysis model of sports social discipline academic influence is established. The principles of fuzzy pattern recognition include the principle of maximum membership degree and proximity degree. Results. The comprehensive relative closeness of the distribution of literature statistics on sports and social disciplines’ academic influence is constructed. The linear programming analysis of literature statistics is carried out using the standardized grid computing method. Conclusions. The combination of association rule feature extraction and semantic feature extraction is used to realize the quantitative calculation of literature statistics and academic influence. The simulation results show that the statistical analysis of the academic influence of sports and social discipline by this method is accurate, and the level of confidence is high.

The article describes the content of the discipline "Kinesiology", developed for the training direction 49.03.02 "Physical culture for persons with disabilities in health (adaptive physical culture)", training profile "Adaptive sports". The urgency of the discipline is substantiated, its features are noted, and kinesiological methods of diagnostics and rehabilitation of persons with health disorders are given. The discipline ensures the formation of professional competencies among bachelors of the specified direction, knowledge, abilities, skills that meet the requirements of the Federal State Educational Standard 3 ++. It instills labor functions that meet the professional standards "Trainer for adaptive physical culture and adaptive sports", "Instructor-methodologist for adaptive physical culture and adaptive sports" and "Specialist for rehabilitation work in the social sphere". The peculiarities of the issues studied, the depth of the study of the material are reflected in the indicators of achievement, indicating the labor ac-tions that students must demonstrate when completing the study of the discipline.

Within New Zealand there is a definite confusion between the role identity of social workers and support workers within community mental health services. Currently there appears to be a degree of confusion as to the distinguishing features of these two roles. The objective of this preliminary investigation was to identify the similarities and differences within the two discipline areas. The themes identified through the thematic analysis indicated marked similarities between the two roles examined. The fundamental differences identified were the level of qualification, competencies, clinical work and experience of the workers. Scopes of practice are considered as a means of offering individual identities for both disciplines.

Acknowledgement of gender disparity in academia has been made in recent years, as have efforts to reduce this inequality. These efforts will be undermined if insufficient numbers of women qualify and are competitive for academic careers. The gender ratio at each graduate degree level has been examined in some studies, with findings suggesting that women’s representation has increased, and in some recent cases, achieved equality. These findings are promising as they could indicate that more women will soon qualify for early-career academic positions. Most of these studies, however, examine a specific—or narrow subset—of academic disciplines. Therefore, it remains unclear if these findings generalize across disciplines. Gambling researchers, and the graduate students they supervise, are a uniquely heterogeneous group representing multiple academic disciplines including health sciences, math, law, psychology, and sociology, among many more. Thus, gambling student researchers are a group who can be examined for gender equality at postgraduate levels, while reducing the impact of discipline specificity evident in previous investigations. The current study examined graduate-level scholarships from one Canadian funding agency (Alberta Gambling Research Institute), awarded from 2009 through 2019, for gender parity independent of academic discipline.

Over the past decade, several Australian universities have offered a double degree in nursing and paramedicine. Mainstream employment models that facilitate integrated graduate practice in both nursing and paramedicine are currently lacking. The aim of the present study was to detail the development of the Interprofessional Graduate Program (IPG), the industrial and professional issues that required solutions, outcomes from the first pilot IPG group and future directions. The IPG was an 18-month program during which participants rotated between graduate nursing experience in emergency nursing at Northern Health, Melbourne, Australia and graduate paramedic experience with Ambulance Victoria. The first IPG with 10 participants ran from January 2011 to August 2012. A survey completed by nine of the 10 participants in March 2014 showed that all nine participants nominated Ambulance Victoria as their main employer and five participants were working casual shifts in nursing. Alternative graduate programs that span two health disciplines are feasible but hampered by rigid industrial relations structures and professional ideologies. Despite a ‘purpose built’ graduate program that spanned two disciplines, traditional organisational structures still hamper double-degree graduates using all of skills to full capacity, and force the selection of one dominant profession. What is known about the topic? There are no employment models that facilitate integrated graduate practice in both nursing and paramedicine. The lack of innovative employment models for double-degree graduates means that current graduate program structures force double-degree graduates to practice in one discipline, negating the intent of a double degree. What does this paper add? This is the first time that a graduate program specifically designed for double-degree graduates with qualifications as Registered Nurses and Paramedics has been developed, delivered and evaluated. This paper confirms that graduate programs spanning two health disciplines are feasible. What are the implications for practitioners? Even with a graduate program specifically designed to span nursing and paramedicine, traditional organisational structures still hamper double-degree graduates using all their skills to full capacity, and force the selection of one dominant profession.

Abstract:
The article discusses the features of the medical ethos of residents of the Federal State Budgetary Educational Institution of Higher Education of the Tver State Medical University of the Ministry of Health of Russia. Some of the basic components that form the ethos of a doctor are indicators of the degree of freedom, responsibility, discipline, self-discipline and self-responsibility. In this regard, a psycho-diagnostic study was carried out aimed at determining the external and internal modes of responsibility of residents in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. The processing, analysis and interpretation of empirical data was carried out on the basis of the Center for Psychological Support of the Federal State Budgetary Educational Institution of Higher Education of the Tver State Medical University of the Ministry of Health of Russia. The study made it possible to conduct a qualitative analysis, determine the degree and forms of discipline. Egoism, individualism, mercantilism are secondary qualities that regulate, discipline the activities of a specialist. The experience of the current challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic requires strengthening the humanitarian, bioethical and general cultural components in the training of medical workers at all levels, both through the assimilation of abstract principles and through interactive forms such as social and psychological trainings, master classes, etc.

Aim/Purpose: This paper investigates the association between publishing during doctoral candidature and completion time. The effects of discipline and of gaining additional support through a doctoral cohort program are also explored. Background: Candidates recognize the value of building a publication track record to improve their career prospects yet are cognizant of the time it takes to publish peer-reviewed articles. In some institutions or disciplines, there is a policy or the expectation that doctoral students will publish during their candidature. However, doctoral candidates are also under increasing pressure to complete their studies within a designated timeframe. Thus, some candidates and faculty perceive the two requirements – to publish and to complete on time – as mutually exclusive. Furthermore, where candidates have a choice in the format that the PhD submission will take, be it by monograph, PhD-by-publication, or a hybrid thesis, there is little empirical evidence available to guide the decision. This paper provides a quantitative analysis of the association between publishing during candidature and time-to-degree and investigates other variables associated with doctoral candidate research productivity and efficiency. Methodology: Multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to examine the predictors (discipline [field of research], gender, age group, domestic or international student status, and belonging to a cohort program) of doctoral candidate research productivity and efficacy. Research productivity was quantified by the number of peer-reviewed journal articles that a candidate published as a primary author during and up to 24 months after thesis submission. Efficacy (time-to-degree) was quantified by the number of Full-Time Equivalent (FTE) years of candidature. Data on 1,143 doctoral graduates were obtained from a single Australian university for the period extending from 2000 to 2020. Complete publication data were available on 707 graduates, and time-to-degree data on 664 graduates. Data were drawn from eight fields of research, which were grouped into the disciplines of health, biological sciences, agricultural and environmental sciences, and chemical, earth, and physical sciences. Contribution: This paper addresses a gap in empirical literature by providing evidence of the association between publishing during doctoral candidature and time-to-degree in the disciplines of health, biological sciences, agricultural and environmental sciences, and chemical, earth, and physical sciences. The paper also adds to the body of evidence that demonstrates the value of belonging to a cohort program for doctoral student outcomes. Findings: There is a significant association between the number of articles published and median time-to-degree. Graduates with the highest research productivity (four or more articles) exhibited the shortest time-to-degree. There was also a significant association between discipline and the number of publications published during candidature. Gaining additional peer and research-focused support and training through a cohort program was also associated with higher research productivity and efficiency compared to candidates in the same discipline but not in receipt of the additional support. Recommendations for Practitioners: While the encouragement of candidates to both publish and complete within the recommended doctorate timeframe is recommended, even within disciplines characterized by high levels of research productivity, i.e., where publishing during candidature is the “norm,” the desired levels of student research productivity and efficiency are only likely to be achieved where candidates are provided with consistent writing and publication-focused training, together with peer or mentor support. Recommendation for Researchers: Publishing peer-reviewed articles during doctoral candidature is shown not to adversely affect candidates’ completion time. Researchers should seek writing and publication-focused support to enhance their research productivity and efficiency. Impact on Society: Researchers have an obligation to disseminate their findings for the benefit of society, industry, or practice. Thus, doctoral candidates need to be encouraged and supported to publish as they progress through their candidature. Future Research: The quantitative findings need to be followed up with a mixed-methods study aimed at identifying which elements of publication and research-focused support are most effective in raising doctoral candidate productivity and efficacy.

The chapter discusses the demarcation of health and disease by considering ‘disease entity’ as the most fundamental notion in the theory of medicine. First, it provides an analysis of the conceptual structure of the medical theory of disease and nosology. It demonstrates that the most central theoretical tool of fully developed medical disciplines is the concept of disease entity. Second, the chapter demonstrates that individual cases of disease entities differ typically according to their stages and degrees of severity. Third, the chapter argues that psychiatry is not yet a fully developed medical discipline and is lacking a mature nosological structure. The conclusion is that, for diagnostic and practical purposes, psychiatry is not in need of gradations between health and disease in general, but rather of empirically sound and validated gradations that address the kind, stage, and severity of its nosological entities, including its provisional surrogates for proper disease entities.

This book tells the story of Disaster Action, a small charity founded in 1991 by survivors and bereaved people from the disasters of the late 1980s, including Zeebrugge, King's Cross, Clapham, Lockerbie, Hillsborough and the Marchioness. The aims were to create a health and safety culture in which disasters were less likely to occur and to support others affected by similar events. The founders could not have anticipated the degree to which they would influence emergency planning and management and the way people are treated after disasters. AbstractBased on evidence and theory, we state that facilitating and supporting people’s meaning-making processes are health promoting. Hence, meaning-in-life is a salutogenic concept.Authors from various disciplines such as nursing, medicine, psychology, philosophy, religion, and arts argue that the human search for meaning is a primary force in life and one of the most fundamental challenges an individual faces. Research demonstrates that meaning is of great importance for mental as well as physical well-being and crucial for health and quality of life. Studies have shown significant correlations between meaning-in-life and physical health measured by lower mortality for all causes of death; meaning is correlated with less cardiovascular disease, less hypertension, better immune function, less depression, and better coping and recovery from illness. Studies have shown that cancer patients who experience a high degree of meaning have a greater ability to tolerate bodily ailments than those who do not find meaning-in-life. Those who, despite pain and fatigue, experience meaning report better quality-of-life than those with low meaning. Hence, if the individual finds meaning despite illness, ailments, and imminent death, well-being, health, and quality-of-life will increase in the current situation. However, when affected by illness and reduced functionality, finding meaning-in-life might prove more difficult. A will to search for meaning is required, as well as health professionals who help patients and their families not only to cope with illness and suffering but also to find meaning amid these experiences. Accordingly, meaning-in-life is considered a vital salutogenic resource and concept.The psychiatrist Viktor Emil Frankl’s theory of “Will to Meaning” forms the basis for modern health science research on meaning; Frankl’s premise was that man has enough to live by, but too little to live for. According to Frankl, logotherapy ventures into the spiritual dimension of human life. The Greek word “logos” means not only meaning but also spirit. However, Frankl highlighted that in a logotherapeutic context, spirituality is not primarily about religiosity—although religiosity can be a part of it—but refers to a specific human dimension that makes us human. Frankl based his theory on three concepts: meaning, freedom to choose and suffering, stating that the latter has no point. People should not look for an inherent meaning in the negative events happening to them, or in their suffering, because the meaning is not there. The meaning is in the attitude people choose while suffering from illness, crises, etc.

Health data science is an emerging discipline that bridges computer science, statistics and health domain knowledge. This consists of taking advantage of the large volume of data, often complex, to extract information to improve decision-making. We have created a Master’s degree in Health Data Science to meet the growing need for data scientists in companies and institutions. The training offers, over two years, courses covering computer science, mathematics and statistics, health and biology. With more than 60 professors and lecturers, a total of 835 hours of classes (not including the mandatory 5 months of internship per year), this curriculum has enrolled a total of 53 students today. The feedback from the students and alumni allowed us identifying new needs in terms of training, which may help us to adapt the program for the coming academic years. In particular, we will offer an additional module covering data management, from the edition of the clinical report form to the implementation of a data warehouse with an ETL process. Git and application lifecycle management will be included in programming courses or multidisciplinary projects.

In this chapter, the extent to which clinician confidence corresponds to objective uncertainty and clinician error is demonstrated. The lack of accuracy in mental health assessments is contrasted with the inflated confidence that clinicians have in their assessments. Two key issues are addressed. One is that clinician overconfidence is discordant with the level of objective uncertainty inherent to diagnostic and risk assessments. The second is that the degree of confidence clinicians have in their diagnostic impressions is a remarkably poor indicator of accuracy. The chapter illustrates that clinician confidence and accuracy are predictable and consistently misaligned regardless of discipline and experience levels.

Occupational health is the ‘promotion and maintenance of the highest degree of physical, mental, and social well-being of workers in all occupations’. Work-related ill-health and injuries cause considerable mortality and morbidity to workers worldwide, and are a major cause of disability, lost productivity, and sickness absence. In the occupational setting, workers may suffer from occupational diseases (those directly caused by workplace hazards); ‘work-related diseases’ (those that are multifactorial in origin with occupational exposures contributing to part of the aetiology); and non-occupational diseases that affect the general population. Primary, secondary, and tertiary preventive measures can be used to reduce the burden of disease at the workplace. Prevention of occupational ill-health requires an understanding of the work processes, the range and extent of exposures to hazards, and the steps that may be available to reduce exposure. It also requires recognition of vulnerable occupational groups such as workers in developing nations, migrant workers, child labour, women workers, and impaired workers. The standard hierarchy of control strategies for reducing exposure to workplace hazards includes elimination, substitution, isolation, engineering measures, administrative procedures, and personal protective equipment. The workplace can be a suitable venue for health promotion activities although this should not be at the expense of elimination and control of exposure to occupational hazards. As occupational health practice has evolved to consideration of health issues beyond the ‘factory gate’, the discipline now has much in common with environmental health and encompasses the philosophy and principles of good public health practice.

For Medical Informatics graduates, there is no compatibility between the training knowledge and skills at universities and the job requirements. This study aimed to determine the skills and competencies requirements for medical informatics graduates and possible job positions in an emerging discipline. This qualitative study was conducted using a questionnaire developed by the researchers. Nine independent medical informatics professionals assessed the initial draft of this tool to determine its face and content validity, and reliability. The questionnaire was distributed among 80 medical informaticians with a doctorate or a master’s degree. In this study, items with an average of 4 and higher were confirmed; out of the 78 items, 66 were approved. The highest number of unapproved items was related to managerial knowledge and skills. Research knowledge, training skills, individual skills, technical capacities, specific skills in the health industry, and managerial skills are the main areas that graduates must learn. This survey can help develop a curriculum and job descriptions for medical informatics.

Health psychology is concerned with understanding human behaviour in the context of health, illness, and health care. It is the study of the psychological factors, which determine how people stay healthy, why they become ill, and how they respond to illness and health care. Health psychology has emerged as a separate discipline in the past 30 years and there are many reasons for its rapid development. An important background factor is the major change in the nature of health problems in industrialized societies during the twentieth century. Chronic illnesses such as heart disease and cancer have become the leading causes of death, and behavioural factors such as smoking, diet, and stress are now recognized as playing a major role in the aetiology and progression of these diseases. The provision of health care has grown enormously and there is an increased awareness of good communication as a central ingredient of medical care and of the importance of such factors as patient satisfaction and quality of life as key outcomes in evaluating the efficacy of medical interventions. Although health psychology has developed over a similar time period to general hospital/liaison psychiatry and shares some common areas of interest, there are some clear differences between these two fields. Liaison psychiatry has a primary focus on hospital patients, particularly those experiencing psychological difficulties in the face of a physical health problem. In contrast, health psychology has a much broader focus on both healthy and ill populations and on the psychological processes that influence their level of health or their degree of adaptation to disease. Whereas health psychology has been mainly concerned with developing explanations based on theory, for health-related and illness-related behaviour, liaison psychiatry has concentrated on the diagnosis and treatment of either unexplained symptoms or psychiatric disorders occurring in people with medical conditions (see the other chapters in Part 5 of this volume). In this chapter we provide an overview of the main themes and areas in health psychology. Four broad areas of behaviour will be reviewed, namely behavioural factors influencing health, symptom and illness behaviour, health care behaviour, and treatment behaviour. Inevitably such an overview is selective and the interested reader should seek out a more comprehensive introductory text or more in-depth accounts of specific areas.

This chapter presents the experiences of Chinese in Malaysia (CIM), in the context of mental health services. As the second largest ethnic group in Malaysia, CIM is diverse in its dialectic subculture, education, generation, geography, and degree of assimilation to the mainstream culture. The chapter introduces the ecological characteristics of CIM and how they shape the unique psychological challenges. Though CIM are known for their multilingual ability, strong work ethics, emphasis on education, and family piety, the clashes between tradition and modern values, the marginalized position in the Malaysian political arena, the stereotype of overachiever in education, and the “brain drain” movement of young elite CIM, have all caused a strain in CIM families as well as individuals. Moreover, they face both external and internal barriers in getting quality mental health care. It is therefore imperative to promote a mental health discipline that is open to serve CIM, as well as being sensitive to its cultural and historical backdrop.

Aim/Purpose This paper investigates the association between publishing during doctoral candidature and completion time. The effects of discipline and of gaining additional support through a doctoral cohort program are also explored. Background Candidates recognize the value of building a publication track record to improve their career prospects yet are cognizant of the time it takes to publish peer-reviewed articles. In some institutions or disciplines, there is a policy or the expectation that doctoral students will publish during their candidature. How-ever, doctoral candidates are also under increasing pressure to complete their studies within a designated timeframe. Thus, some candidates and faculty perceive the two requirements – to publish and to complete on time – as mutually exclusive. Furthermore, where candidates have a choice in the format that the PhD submission will take, be it by monograph, PhD-by-publication, or a hybrid thesis, there is little empirical evidence available to guide the decision. This pa-per provides a quantitative analysis of the association between publishing during candidature and time-to-degree and investigates other variables associated with doctoral candidate research productivity and efficiency. Methodology Multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to examine the predictors (discipline [field of research], gender, age group, domestic or international student status, and belonging to a cohort program) of doctoral candidate research productivity and efficacy. Research productivity was quantified by the number of peer-reviewed journal articles that a candidate published as a primary author during and up to 24 months after thesis submission. Efficacy (time-to-degree) was quantified by the number of Full-Time Equivalent (FTE) years of candidature. Data on 1,143 doctoral graduates were obtained from a single Australian university for the period extending from 2000 to 2020. Complete publication data were available on 707 graduates, and time-to-degree data on 664 graduates. Data were drawn from eight fields of research, which were grouped into the disciplines of health, biological sciences, agricultural and environmental sciences, and chemical, earth, and physical sciences. Contribution This paper addresses a gap in empirical literature by providing evidence of the association between publishing during doctoral candidature and time-to-degree in the disciplines of health, biological sciences, agricultural and environmental sciences, and chemical, earth, and physical sciences. The paper also adds to the body of evidence that demonstrates the value of belonging to a cohort pro-gram for doctoral student outcomes. Findings There is a significant association between the number of articles published and median time-to-degree. Graduates with the highest research productivity (four or more articles) exhibited the shortest time-to-degree. There was also a significant association between discipline and the number of publications published during candidature. Gaining additional peer and research-focused support and training through a cohort program was also associated with higher research productivity and efficiency compared to candidates in the same discipline but not in receipt of the additional support. Recommendations for Practitioners While the encouragement of candidates to both publish and complete within the recommended doctorate timeframe is recommended, even within disciplines characterized by high levels of research productivity, i.e., where publishing during candidature is the “norm,” the desired levels of student research productivity and efficiency are only likely to be achieved where candidates are provided with consistent writing and publication-focused training, together with peer or mentor support. Recommendations for Researchers Publishing peer-reviewed articles during doctoral candidature is shown not to adversely affect candidates’ completion time. Researchers should seek writing and publication-focused support to enhance their research productivity and efficiency. Impact on Society Researchers have an obligation to disseminate their findings for the benefit of society, industry, or practice. Thus, doctoral candidates need to be encouraged and supported to publish as they progress through their candidature. Future Research The quantitative findings need to be followed up with a mixed-methods study aimed at identifying which elements of publication and research-focused sup-port are most effective in raising doctoral candidate productivity and efficacy.

The adaptation pressure of youths to a labor market with a low predictability degree determines the necessity of developing certain competences which can be easily transferrable and which can ensure the personal and professional success. We have considered non cognitive abilities (attitudes, emotions, behaviours) which proved to be significant predictors of success and mental health (Heckman, 2008) and which contribute significantly to a rise in emotional strength and to a wide range of adaptative strategies imposed by contemporary society (Opre et al., 2018). The speciality literature confirms the importance of non-cognitive abilities in the students’ / pupils’ academic success (Heckman et al., 2006; Heckman, 2008; Deming, 2015; Balica et al., 2016). The predictability degree of diverse non cognitive abilities over academic success is different as most studies do not supply relevant data about abilities such as self-efficacy, growth mindset or social awareness (Claro & Loeb, 2019), while abilities like self-management defined as the ability to regulate one’s emotions, thoughts, and behaviors in different situations (Duckworth & Carlson, 2013) represents a good predictor of academic achievement (Blair & Raver, 2015; Riggs et al., 2016). We consider self-management as being that umbrella construct which refers to abilities such as self-control, self-regulation, self-discipline, will power and self-power (Duckworth & Kern, 2011). Under the circumstances in which students with major risk abandonment participate in specific activities to develop personal, socio-emotional and learning management abilities, our study proposes to examine the variation of self-management abilities of students who participated in these activities and of students who did not participate in the activities and who are not prone to risk abandonment. Also, we wish to investigate if there is a relation between students’ self-management abilities and student achievement.

Fruits are a relevant source of phenols and ascorbate, biomolecules which scavenge reactive oxygen species. For this reason, they are considered as healthy for the human being. Fruits quality depends on their levels of antioxidants and enzyme activities that ensure their conservation. The aim of this work was to plan and execute a laboratory class of Enzymology, a discipline of Biochemistry degree of University of Évora, Portugal, for determining the functional and conservation value of three different fruits types, sold in the market of Évora, Portugal. The development of this activity allowed that students of a pilot class participate in a laboratory activity which intended to compare the content of phenols, ascorbate, and polyphenol oxidase enzyme activity present in apple, peach and blueberries pulp. At Lab activity, the students successfully determined markers of functional and conservation value of selected fruits. The skills acquired by the students, in terms of obtaining fruit pulp and their composition in antioxidants, stimulated their commitment degree on the application of biochemistry in the everyday, acquiring thereby significant learning, with a high degree of satisfaction.

The welding of superalloys has been regarded, generally, as an art requiring the highest degree of welder skill and discipline. These highly alloyed materials are prone to micro-cracking and, in some cases, even the best welders cannot achieve satisfactory results. Now, however, advances in automation technology have made it possible to program precisely the complex airfoil shapes and the welding parameters. Consequently, turbine blades can be welded in a repeatable manner, with a minimum of heat input resulting in better metallurgical quality both in the base metal and the weld deposit. The application of this technology to the automated welding of high-pressure compressor turbine blade tips, and the refurbishment of low-pressure turbine blade shrouds are presented in this paper.

"We present an old process developed more than a hundred years ago at American universities. It means professional, journalistic and academic forms of writing. It also includes poetry and narrative forms. Creative writing has always been at the heart of university education. Today, there are more than 500 bachelor's degree programs and 250 master's degree programs in this subject in the United States. In other fields of study, it is mandatory to enrol in this subject. After World War II, it came to Europe, first to England and later to Germany. Here, ""... since the 'Sturm und Drang' (1770-1789) of the early Goethe period, the autodidactic poetics of the cult of genius prevailed. The teachability of creative writing has been disputed ever since and its dissemination has therefore always had a hard time in Germany"" [von Werder 2000:99]. It is rarely found in the curricula of German universities. At the Dresden University of Applied Sciences, we have been practicing it for five years with great response from social work students. They learn different methods: professional writing for partners and administration, poetic writing for children's or adult groups, scientific language for their final thesis and later publications. Although we offer it as an elective, more than 80% of students choose it. Final papers are also written on these creative topics or using the methods learned. ""Writing forces economy and precision. What swirls chaotically around in our heads at the same time has to be ordered into succession when writing"" [Bütow in Tieger 2000:9]. The winners of this training are not only our former students! Children in after-school programs and youth clubs improve their writing skills through play. Patients in hospitals work on their biographies. People who only write on the computer discover slow and meaningful writing, activating their emotional system. Therefore, this paper will show how clients benefit from creative writing skills of their social workers and what gain other disciplines can expect as well."
