Abstract:
In the big data era, it is a great challenge to identify high-level abstract features out of a flood of sci-tech literature to achieve in-depth analysis of data. The deep learning technology has developed rapidly and achieved applications in many fields, but has rarely been utilized in the research of sci-tech literature data. This article introduced the presentation method of vector space of terminologies in sci-tech literature based on the deep learning model. It explored and adopted a deep AE model to reduce the dimensionality of input word vector feature. Also put forward is the methodology of correlation analysis of sci-tech literature based on deep learning technology. The experimental results showed that the processing of sci-tech literature data could be simplified into the computation of vectors in the multi-dimensional vector space, and the similarity in vector space could be used to represent similarity in text semantics. The correlation analysis of subject contents between sci-tech literatures of the same or different types can be made using this method.

Abstract:
The term "Deep Tech" is prevalent in industry but ill-defined. In this extended letter, we define Deep Tech (technology that is difficult to develop today, with the potential to become a pervasive and easy-to-implement basic need in the future) and consider its role in evolving businesses. We suggest how organizations can position themselves to take advantage of a coming wave of innovation, with emphasis placed on Creative Destruction's role (cannibalizing product lines) in creating sustaining enterprises. Understanding the diffusion of technical innovation from hard-to-implement exciter to commodity basic need will encourage leaders to rethink their current offerings to play in a future-thinking space setting these companies apart from the competition. We provide examples drawn from successful organizations.

Abstract:
AbstractThe introduction of film-based Kodak Technical Pan emulsion at the UKST has led to a new lease of life for deep, wide-field astrophotography. This is because the excellent imaging, resolution and low noise characteristics of Tech Pan typically yield a one magnitude depth gain over equivalent IIIa-F plates. Many new projects are underway to take advantage of the significant information gains. The cheap cost of film and ease of transportation gives direct economic benefits too. Tech Pan could also offer a medium term, competitive alternative to CCD mosaics for providing new, deep, wide-field surveys via stacking of several digitised exposures of the same field. A one magnitude gain could result from the stacking of just 6 Tech Pan films to yield an R ∼ 23.5–24. Even without digital co-addition the largest current CCDs cannot hope to match Tech Pan’s inherent ∼ 3 µm resolution and the 40 square degree area coverage of the UKST.

Abstract:
Considering that technology is developing at a rapid pace, the venture capital landscape changes due to R&D and product maturity life cycles shortening dramatically compared to 50 years ago, thus impacting the portfolio of a VC and its future investment opportunities. However, this relationship between digitalization and venture capital remains underexamined in literature. The research problem is thus to explore how venture capital and the industries it backs have been shaped by digitalization and thus deep tech within the context of Europe. The literature review as a method is examining mechanisms propelled by the digitalization behind the top five VC-backed industries between 2015- 2019 in Europe. In this research, deep tech is a major factor as to why industries have been the most heavily invested in due to their predicted potential exploiting the use of digital technologies. Further research should explore this relationship deeper through obtaining primary data with a quantitative approach to strengthen the implications of the findings.

Abstract:
Venture capital is associated with some of the most rapidly growing and influential technological companies. The strengths of the venture capital model have been effectively articulated by academics and policymakers. At the same time, venture capital financing became increasingly influential in the deep technology startup ecosystem, and there was a need to investigate the industry's growth impact of financing. Hence, this thesis focuses on the research area that is initiated by Industrifonden, an early-stage venture capital fund in Sweden. This study has chosen to investigate and answer the growth impact analysis in two key areas: timing (is timing of financing an independent factor for the growth of deep tech startups?) and sector based financing (Is Venture capital financing sector based?). The data comes from a cohort of startups (143 startups from 2010 to 2019) that are representative of deep-tech and non-deep-tech firms in Sweden, according to the Retriever Business Database in association with KTH Library. As the performance can be explained through the growth of the firms, the result shows that timing of funding has a statistically significant impact on the growth of the firm. The findings indicate a higher positive correlation between timing and startups’ growth, but sector based financing is statistically insignificant for deep tech startup growth.

Gnatenko, Viktoria, Chenyu Huang, and Simon Olsson. "The Role of Foreign Market Knowledge in Internationalization of B2B Born Global SMEs : A Case Study of Deep Tech Companies." Thesis, Linnéuniversitetet, Institutionen för marknadsföring (MF), 2019. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:lnu:diva-86279.

Full text
Abstract:
The subject of internationalization of Born Global small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that start cross-border business operations shortly after the company’s foundation has received growing scholarly attention in the last decades. Although the research of the influence of the market knowledge - information a firm has about a specific foreign market, on internationalization decisions was developing rapidly to account for the challenges of the established internationalization theories, multi-factor comprehensive analysis of the influence of all the interlinked factors of the market knowledge remains overlooked by research. Therefore, the main purpose of this thesis is to contribute to the understanding of the impact of foreign market knowledge on the decisions of business-to-business (B2B) Born Global SMEs regarding when, where to, and how to internationalize, and concerning the ways of operating in the foreign market(s). To fulfill the purpose of the paper, the authors carried out a qualitative multiple case study with six Born Global SMEs working in the deep tech industry which has started international operations up to one year after the establishment. Fieldwork consisted of 14 virtual interviews with the Marketing Managers and Founders of the firms. The results of this study show that the process through which the studied B2B Born Global SMEs internationalize is very similar among all companies: it starts between a few weeks up to one year after the inception of the company, and it follows a typical progressive process (first, the firms have one of their employees or external representatives physically going to the foreign market of interest; then establish the partnerships with local companies; later appoint a local representative to the market, and lastly establish a subsidiary company). Next, the research illustrates that the studied Born Global SMEs acquire foreign market knowledge from external parties by the method of grafting. Furthermore, the study also concluded that there are three groups of factors of the foreign market, which are categorized based on the firms’ perception of the factors’ influence on decisions of B2B Born Global SMEs about when, where to, and how to internationalize. These groups are: important (economic opportunities, networks, political context), disregarded (language, culture, and legal regulations) and overlooked (political context, legal regulations, and language) factors. Lastly, such foreign market knowledge factors were found to influence the decisions of B2B Born Global SMEs’ about ways of operations in the foreign market(s): political situation, economic opportunities, and legal regulation impact the companies’ decisions about operations in the foreign market(s).

Granath, Jonas. "The Search For a Swedish Valley of Death & Possible Ways Out : Investigating Financing Strategies for the Development of Deep Tech Innovation." Thesis, Uppsala universitet, Industriell teknik, 2021. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-447262.

Full text
Abstract:
This study seeks to review the topic of how deep tech innovation is raised in Sweden and more particularly, the finance-related constraints of this ecosystem. The study proceeds from the idea of mapping out the available, and subsequently more suitable financing alternatives for novel deep tech ventures. A more specific focus lies within understanding what factors are influencing investment decisions amongst such actors.  Thereon, there is an attempt to ground a theory revolving around what kind of features in the deep tech start-up, are critical in order to overcome the identified financial challenges. Theoretically, it is explained how the inherent uncertainty of new innovative ventures in general, and those of deep tech character in particular, entails additional financing constraints that deter investors. This results in an s.c "Valley of Death", normally transpiring as a firm aspires to transition from a research-driven development business to a market-driven commercial business. The findings in this study can be considered to confirm this phenomenon as transpiring in Sweden, whereupon it is also seen as a reasonable opinion that the respective problem can be maneuvered. The main arguments in terms of success factors in this respect is; (i) the ability to match with investors with a solid understanding of the particular industry of operations, as wells as for deep tech in general, (ii) the ability to acquire a diverse team with solid industry experience and contacts, (iii) the ability to demonstrate market proximity, (iv) the ability to demonstrate a potential that can justify the intensified uncertainty, as well as a credible plan to reach it, (v) and abilities to argue positively for impacts in sustainable aspects. Furthermore, a few suggestions for further research in relation to the topic and problematization have been identified; alternative choices for fiscal policies, deep tech opportunities in the shadow of s.c impact investing, eventual opportunities in addressing public markets, and eventual constraints in the external dichotomy between public and private sector financing.

Abstract:
This study critically investigates the material and structural behaviour of Aer-Tech material. Aer- Tech material is composed of 10% by volume of foam mechanically entrapped in a plastic mortar. The research study showed that the density of the material mix controls all other properties such as fresh state properties, mechanical properties, functional properties and acoustic properties. Appreciably, the research had confirmed that Aer-Tech material despite being classified as a light weight material had given high compressive strength of about 33.91N/mm2. The compressive strength characteristics of Aer-Tech material make the material a potential cost effective construction material, comparable to conventional concrete. The material also showed through this study that it is a structural effective material with its singly reinforced beam giving ultimate moment of about 38.7KN. In addition, the Aer-Tech material is seen as a very good ductile material since, the singly reinforced beam in tension showed visible signs of diagonal vertical cracks long before impending rapture. Consequently, the SEM test and the neural network model predictions, carried out had showed how billions of closely tight air cells are evenly distributed within the Aer-Tech void system as well as the close prediction of NN model for compressive strength and density are same with the experimental results of compressive strength and density. The result shows that the Aer-Tech NN-model can simulate inputs data and predicts their corresponding output data.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the history of Commonwealth Government higher education policy in Australia between 1958 and 1997 and its impact on the development of two groups of academic librarians: the Association of Librarians in Colleges in Advanced Education (ALCAE) and the Committee of Australian University Librarians (CAUL). Although university librarians had met occasionally since the late 1920s, it was only in 1965 that a more formal organisation, known as CAUL, was established to facilitate the exchange of ideas and information. ALCAE was set up in 1969 and played an important role helping develop a special concept of library service peculiar to the newly formed College of Advanced Education (CAE) sector. As well as examining the impact of Commonwealth Government higher education policy on ALCAE and CAUL, the thesis also explores the influence of other factors on these two groups, including the range of personalities that comprised them, and their relationship with their parent institutions and with other professional groups and organisations. The study focuses on how higher education policy and these other external and internal factors shaped the functions, aspirations, and internal dynamics of these two groups and how this resulted in each group evolving differently. The author argues that, because of the greater attention given to the special educational role of libraries in the CAE curriculum, the group of college librarians had the opportunity to participate in, and have some influence on, Commonwealth Government statutory bodies responsible for the coordination of policy and the distribution of funding for the CAE sector. The link between ALCAE and formal policy-making processes resulted in a more dynamic group than CAUL, with the university librarians being discouraged by their Vice-Chancellors from having contact with university funding bodies because of the desire of the universities to maintain a greater level of control over their affairs and resist interference from government. The circumstances of each group underwent a reversal over time as ALCAE's effectiveness began to diminish as a result of changes to the CAE sector and as member interest was transferred to other groups and organisations. Conversely, CAUL gradually became a more active group during the 1980s and early 1990s as a result of changes to higher education, the efforts of some university librarians, and changes in membership. This study is based principally on primary source material, with the story of ALCAE and CAUL being told through the use of a combination of original documentation (including minutes of meetings and correspondence) and interviews with members of each group and other key figures.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This chapter explores both Governor Michael Dukakis's career from the early 1970s to his presidential bid and the state's economic turnaround, dubbed the “Massachusetts Miracle,” which made the high-tech industry and skilled professionals ever more central to the state's economy and politics, and the Democratic Party. Despite Dukakis's loss, his platform of abortion rights, affirmative action, the environment, and other quality-of-life concerns coupled with an emphasis on using market incentives to stimulate high-tech growth had a deep impact. Dukakis's platform influenced the set of policies and approach adopted by the Democratic Leadership Council (DLC) and its leader, Bill Clinton, in their efforts to appeal to suburban voters and move the party closer toward the center. This agenda continued to disproportionately benefit postindustrial professionals, while also perpetuating forms of racial and economic inequality within metropolitan Boston and in the Democratic Party's priorities.

Wood, David. Deep Time, Dark Times. Fordham University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.5422/fordham/9780823281367.001.0001.

Abstract:
Deep Time, Dark Times takes its bearing from Nietzsche’s concern that a surfeit of history can extinguish the passion for life, especially when we are reminded of our capacity for cruelty and folly. The prospect of devastating climate change extends our sense of the past onto a geological scale, arousing debilitating passion, especially anger, ressentiment and resignation. What can Nietzsche teach us here? Hume’s sense that reason is but a slave to the passions cautions us against new utopian blueprints that fail to address the mood of today. Although climate change can rightly be laid at the feet of industrialization, corporate greed, fossil fuel companies … Deep Time challenges us to re-imagine ourselves as a species, through a geological consciousness. This expands Nietzsche’s sense of “life” to include our fellow terrestrials, and accentuates his sense of critical history, navigating between conflicting passions. Such a consciousness would be ecological (embracing yet another wound to our sovereignty), and it would acknowledge the advent of the Anthropocene. Deep Time draws on Heidegger’s call for a new attunement, one that connects contemporary anger and frustration with the agency vacuum created by the failure of global democracy. The question of who “we” are, when we imagine emergent forms of agency, or when we consider the constituencies impacted by climate change, is explicitly thematized. Information technology, for all its liabilities, offers new possibilities of group identity-formation, communication, and economic transaction that just might make a difference. We have to will the impossible to avoid the unthinkable.

Abstract:
This paper summarizes our experience in reliability based facility design from the first deep-water mini Tension Leg Platform (TLP) to the largest High-Tech cleanroom in the world. It discusses two different reliability based design approaches: 1) a traditional approach based on the cause-effect theory, which is developed by small specimens, controlled conditions, and sample data; and 2) an alternative approach based on not only the cause-effect theory, but also the correlation theory developed by real structures, real conditions, and large if not all field measurement data.

Abstract:
University education is facing new strategical changes that will lead to deep structural changes. Course organization is evolving and the organizational decisions have an economical impact. We propose a method to measure the present value of a pedagogical asset under a return rate. We apply the method to three courses in the Computer Science curricula taught at the Facultat d’Informatica de Barcelona of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, Barcelona Tech. A large, compulsory, first year course (PRO1), a medium size undergraduate course (ALG) and a small specialized master course (AGT). Our results highlight that the present value gets higher values as a function of the size of the course and it goes in a negative relationship with respect to the level of computer support involved in their teaching.

Abstract:
Coarse-grained tasks are primarily based on Text classification, one of the earliest problems in NLP, and these tasks are done on document and sentence levels. Here, our goal is to identify the technical domain of a given Bangla text. In Coarse-grained technical domain classification, such a piece of the Bangla text provides information about specific Coarse-grained technical domains like Biochemistry (bioche), Communication Technology (com-tech), Computer Science (cse), Management (mgmt), Physics (phy) Etc. This paper uses a recent deep learning model called the Bangla Bidirectional Encoder Representations Transformers (Bangla BERT) mechanism to identify the domain of a given text. Bangla BERT (Bangla-Bert-Base) is a pretrained language model of the Bangla language. Later, we discuss the Bangla BERT accuracy and compare it with other models that solve the same problem.

Abstract:
The relevance of the topic lies in the fact that the transition to innovative personal management is currently a global trend to improve enterprise management processes in the context of deep integration of the world market, high-tech industries, increased competition and improved uncertainty of the external environment in relation to the enterprise, considering the motivational system. The purpose of the research is to study the role of motivation and corporate culture as the basis for innovative development and improving the productivity of an organization. The database was used by a banking organization; for instance, during the study the approaches of scientists were studied and diagnostic methods for studying the components of corporate culture were selected. Based on the results, a model of practical implementation was formulated, and a sociological experiment was conducted. On this ground using results of the experiment, statistical data on labour productivity were obtained and methodological recommendations were made for using the model proposed in the article. The results obtained are presented as a diagnostic tool and used to include the contact centre management in the work process.

Abstract:
Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) floaters have the advantages of providing the required storage in the hull and direct offloading to tankers of opportunity in deep and ultra-deep water in areas lacking infra-structure. Steel Catenary Risers (SCRs) are the preferred solution in wet-tree applications due to their simplicity, robustness and low Capital costs (CAPEX) and Operational costs (OPEX) compared to other riser options. However, due to its relatively high dynamic motions, FPSO is not a feasible host for SCRs in most environments and especially so in the North Sea very harsh environment. Also, for efficient production from rich reservoirs, large diameter and number of risers are typically required. This makes it more challenging to find a robust and commercially attractive riser solution. In this paper a novel design for an FPSO with the ability to host SCRs in the North Sea very harsh environment is presented and evaluated. The novel design, namely, Low Motion FPSO (LM-FPSO), has a hull form with a generally rectangular cross-section. The platform is moored in-place using a conventional mooring system. The LM-FPSO performance is enhanced with the robust low-tech feature, namely, free-hanging solid ballast tank (SBT). The SBT is located certain distance below hull keel and connected to the hull through four groups of short tendons. All tendon components are the same as those used in conventional TLPs. Through the mass and added mass of the SBT, the LM-FPSO provides significantly improved heave, roll and pitch responses. The paper presents detailed description of the novel North Sea LM-FPSO design and its in-service performance. The SCR’s feasibility is discussed. The identified risks and associated mitigations for the new design compared to the conventional FPSO are investigated and reported. The paper concludes with discussions on the project execution plan and cost benefit when developing fields using this novel design.
