Abstract:

Three-dimensional “deep-etch” electron microscopy (DEEM) resolves a longstanding controversy concerning poxvirus morphogenesis. By avoiding fixative-induced membrane distortions that confounded earlier studies, DEEM shows that the primary poxvirus envelope is a single membrane bilayer coated on its external surface by a continuous honeycomb lattice. Freeze fracture of quick-frozen poxvirus-infected cells further shows that there is only one fracture plane through this primary envelope, confirming that it consists of a single lipid bilayer. DEEM also illustrates that the honeycomb coating on this envelope is completely replaced by a different paracrystalline coat as the poxvirus matures. Correlative thin section images of infected cells freeze substituted after quick-freezing, plus DEEM imaging of Tokuyasu-type cryo-thin sections of infected cells (a new application introduced here) all indicate that the honeycomb network on immature poxvirus virions is sufficiently continuous and organized, and tightly associated with the envelope throughout development, to explain how its single lipid bilayer could remain stable in the cytoplasm even before it closes into a complete sphere.

Abstract:

Abstract Josh Greene famously argued that his cognitive-scientific results undermine deontological moral theorizing. Greene is wrong about this: at best, his research has revealed that at least some characteristically deontological moral judgments are sensitive to factors that we deem morally irrelevant. This alone is not enough to undermine those judgments. However, cognitive science could someday tell us more: it could tell us that in forming those judgments, we treat certain factors as reasons to believe as we do. If we independently deem such factors to be morally irrelevant, such a result would undermine those judgments and any moral theorizing built upon them. This paper attempts to bring charity, clarity, and epistemological sophistication to Greene's argument and those like it.

Abstract:

Deep learning has demonstrated remarkable accuracy analyzing images for cancer detection tasks in recent years. The accuracy that has been achieved rivals radiologists and is suitable for implementation as a clinical tool. However, a significant problem is that these models are black-box algorithms therefore they are intrinsically unexplainable. This creates a barrier for clinical implementation due to lack of trust and transparency that is a characteristic of black box algorithms. Additionally, recent regulations prevent the implementation of unexplainable models in clinical settings which further demonstrates a need for explainability. To mitigate these concerns, there have been recent studies that attempt to overcome these issues by modifying deep learning architectures or providing after-the-fact explanations. A review of the deep learning explanation literature focused on cancer detection using MR images is presented here. The gap between what clinicians deem explainable and what current methods provide is discussed and future suggestions to close this gap are provided.

Abstract:

Selecting good sources of information is a critical skill to navigate our highly social world. To evaluate the epistemic reputation of potential sources, the main criterion should be the relevance of the information they provide us. In two online experiments ( N = 801), we found that receivers are more thankful toward, deem more competent, and are more likely to request information in the future from sources of more relevant messages—if they know the message to be accurate or deem it plausible. To prevent sources from presenting information as more relevant than it is in order to improve their reputation, receivers lower the reputation of sources sending messages that are more relevant-if-true, if they know the message to be inaccurate. Our research sheds light on the reputational trade-offs involved in choosing what information to communicate and helps explain transmission patterns such as rumors diffusion.

Objetivo: Descrever como os enfermeiros que atuam no SAMU-Mossoró-RN, Brasil, percebem os reflexos desse tipo de trabalho em sua qualidade de vida. Métodos: Estudo qualitativo de abordagem descritiva, em que foi utilizada a entrevista semiestruturada a fim de descrever os reflexos do trabalho na qualidade de vida desses profissionais. Participaram do estudo seis enfermeiros do SAMU Mossoró-RN. Resultados: Os participantes do estudo relacionaram que o confronto com situações de natureza estressante interfere na qualidade de vida sendo expresso em cansaço e desmotivação, além de não possuir tempo para o desenvolvimento de atividades que lhe deem prazer fora do ambiente de trabalho. Conclusão: O profissional de enfermagem deve buscar atividades que lhe deem prazer e satisfação tanto no ambiente de trabalho como fora dele para que o seu corpo e mente não se tornem vítimas das consequências negativas que o viver para o trabalho proporciona.

Abstract:

This essay examines widowhood rites and traditions in Northern Muslim Sudan, including those sanctioned by religion (that is, property inheritance and widows’ internment) and those endorsed by local communities. The microhistorical ethnographic accounts in this essay illustrate the deep psychological and physical suffering that narrators experienced as they navigated the labyrinth of socially sanctioned practices in their communities. They also communicate lessons about deep structures of power and the blurred boundaries of religion and ritual. The narratives reveal that despite the tenacity of male governance, female in-laws wield tremendous power in the rites that widows deem discriminatory. While interlocutors in this essay stress the near impossibility of a widow escaping the tentacles of authority and the empathy deficit stemming from it, others who have resisted these widowhood rituals show us how women can conjure the agency to negotiate both the bottlenecks and the thresholds in their paths.

Nostra Aetate initiated a revolutionary shift in Catholic theology, opposing supersessionism and affirming that Jews remain in a salvific covenantal relationship with God. However, this shift raises for Catholics a deep tension regarding the value of this “Old Covenant” vis-à-vis the “New Covenant,” as this article illustrates using the statements of Walter Kasper and The Gifts and the Calling of God Are Irrevocable. While speaking positively about the Old Covenant, both deem it essential to maintain the superiority of the New Covenant as universalistic, fulfilling the promises in the Old Covenant and transcending its limitations. The author demonstrates how they seek to reduce this tension by characterizing the two covenants as good and better covenants, rather than as bad and good covenants, thereby avoiding a lapse into supersessionism.

Abstract:

When writing about politically and culturally sensitive topics, term use is of great relevance. Sámi religion is a case in point. Words organise and create the world around us, and labels have direct consequences on how religious phenomena are perceived. Even labelling a phenomenon or an action “religious” carries certain baggage. Term use is, of course, easier when writing about historical materials and describing rituals whose practitioners have been dead for centuries. Nonetheless, contemporary practitioners of age-old rituals or people who use ancient symbols in their everyday lives often see themselves as carriers of old tradition and wish to identify with previous generations regardless of opinions that might deem their actions as “re-enacting”, “neoshamanism”, or “neopaganism”. If, for example, outsider academics wish to deem modern-day Indigenous persons as “neo”-something, issues of power and essentialism blend in with the discourse. This paper critically explores terms used around the Sámi religion in different time periods and attempts to come to suggestions that could solve some of the terminological problems a student of modern practitioners of indigenous religions inevitably faces.

Abstract:

The identification of the quarrel between Cupid and Apollo at Met. 1. 452–73 as a Callimachean recusatio has become a noted feature of scholarly discussion on this passage. Cupid and Apollo's encounter stands as a favoured starting point for the ongoing analysis of generic interplay within Ovid's sprawling work; this is hardly surprising, given its consideration as a programmatic, exemplary triumph of elegy over epic. Although genre studies on the Metamorphoses have represented an enduring presence in Ovidian discourse since Heinze's pioneering work, genre's evolution into what some deem a pet scholarly obsession within studies of the poet has garnered both admiration and revilement. Given the multiplicity of discussions prominently featuring this very episode, it would not seem unfair to deem any addition superfluous. However, adding to the surfeit of analyses is exactly my intention here, with the view that there are yet a few elements that have gone unremarked or underexplored, and that such elements can illuminate further the complex interplay between epic and elegy here on display. Namely, I will suggest that the dynamic created by the difference in accounts of the Python's slaying (Ov. Met. 1.441–4 versus 1.456–60) has not been appreciated fully for its role in the debasement of epic poetry that leads into and consequently informs the programmatic myth sequence of Apollo and Daphne, and that this dynamic finds an overarching explanation by supplying reference to a passage from Nicander's Theriaca. Using Nicander as a literary source, coupled with recognition of both the fictive touches and the weighted literary critical language that Apollo retrospectively applies to his deed, allows us to reinterpret this passage and provides a further example of Ovid's careful strategies of narrative and tone.

Abstract:

This article explores how Eberhard Jüngel and Hans Frei employ the category of “narrative” in Christian theology. Although Jüngel and Frei receive inspiration from different quarters, they end up drawing some similar conclusions. At the same time, their approaches to narrative theology reveal deep and striking differences between their programs for theology. My comments focus on the problem of language’s referential character, that is, the capacity of words and discourses to signify external objects and states of affairs. As I demonstrate, both Jüngel and Frei seize upon the “problem” (as they both deem it) of the structure of referential language. And yet, how Jüngel and Frei frame this issue and what they do in order to resolve it are conspicuously different in the arguments they unfurl. This difference, I show, folds back upon their distinct agendas for recovering narrative in theological discourse.

The research had as objective to comprehend the sense of pregnancy to the teenager pregnant trying to get the way of being and having be pregnant. It was done four in-deep interviews, using the core question: How do you feel being pregnant? The speeches and their meanings were analysed by the light of Heidegger's Phenomenology. In getting closer to the phenomena we get the way impersonal and not authentic of teenagers, the co-presence in relation to the boyfriend and family. They shown, still the dread by the child and by his health, worrying with the future that around the care, due they deem themselves not to have the ability to this, which causes the anguish and anxiety of daily life, in the new way of being. The comprehension of this phenomena is fundamental in the care to the teenager pregnant to a full and humanized action.

Abstract Relationality has become a popular term for addressing diversity, complexity, interconnectedness, and planetary crisis in many academic fields, including international relations (IR). This article shows that fully embracing relationality calls for a distinct set of tools that are discernable in cosmopraxis, an ontological stance derived from Andean thinking that upholds interdependence and co-becoming, being-feeling-knowing-doing, and both-and logics as key principles of existence. Following a discussion of the “relational turn” in academic debates within and beyond IR, we develop our understanding of deep relationality and explain how cosmopraxis works to awaken the relational sensibilities we deem key to broadening and invigorating the study of worldly affairs. Throughout the article, we make use of stories about weaving, a key metaphor of entanglement and interconnection, but also a concrete practice that embodies the principles of cosmopraxis to illustrate our main arguments.

Parental controls are tools that enable guardians to protect their children from exposure to material they deem inappropriate. This paper details our study of parents and their children on their ability to configure parental controls on entertainment and communication devices. We discovered considerable difficulty on behalf of both parents and children in setting up parental controls on most devices. Additionally, we observed a discrepancy between participants' confidence in successfully setting the parental controls and their actual performance.

Universities present themselves as gender-neutral meritocracies, concerned with the creation and transmission of scientific, objective knowledge. Yet such structures are overwhelmingly male-dominated (Husu 2001a). This article outlines the gender profile of those in senior management in Irish universities; secondly it explores the extent to which those in senior management see a gendered organisational culture or women themselves as ‘the problem’; and thirdly, locates these patterns within a wider organisational and societal context. The qualitative data is derived from a purposive sample of forty people in senior management (85 per cent response rate) from presidential to dean level, including academics and non-academics, men and women, and across a range of disciplines. It suggests that organisational culture is seen as homosocial, unemotional and conformist mainly but not exclusively by women; whereas men were more likely to focus on women as ‘the problem’. These trends reflect those in other studies (for example Currie and Thiele 2001; Deem 1999; Deem, Hillyard and Reed 2008). Drawing on Grummell, Lynch and Devine's (2009) work, it suggests that homosociability is an important process in creating and maintaining these patterns. Furthermore, although university presidents are seen as having the power to affect the gender profile of senior management, there is ambivalence about them actually doing this. The extent to which other stakeholders seem likely to encourage this is also explored.

Gravity and magnetic data are powerful tools utilized to detect the faults (lineaments). In Jordan, still the detailed analyses and reprocessing based on images, would effectively generate shaded relief of second derivative of potential filed, as the contour gravity and magnetic maps itself yield additional faults location. Accordingly new basements faults map focuses on faults crisscrossing Jordan that scrutinize the structural condition of Jordan indicating that the faults belong to distinct groups with different directions. However, these groups are representing a system of an "Orthogonal and Diagonal" network deem to be part of the pragmatic fracture system of the earth. It has been observed that the striking characteristics of these faults expressed by their (1) faults extension relatively extended for long distances and (2) intersection of these systems with each other possibly will help in defining their relative ages. Comparing the results of the current study with those of previous investigations provide an evidence to deem that these known faults in Jordan as supported by the geological or geophysical studies coincide in their positions with faults of linear characteristics as the new interpretation of the potential field maps indicates. However, a single system of this network shows a group of identical characteristics, as each system was formed at the same period of time, yet these different fault systems are concordant with the different phases of the tectonic activities of the region.

Abstract:

We predict anomalous gravitational bending of gamma rays using the gravitational framework of Yarman’s approach, abbreviated hereinafter as “YARK” from the initials of the co-authors to designate their teamwork. In contrast to the metric layout of the general theory of relativity (GTR), YARK theory is founded directly on the energy conservation law pertaining to interaction between masses. Despite the fact that predictions made respectively by GTR and YARK regarding cornerstone astrophysical observations appear remarkably identical to each other, the philosophies behind them are irreconcilably different. To test which theory comes closer to the reality, one should propose ways to distinguish their success at the experimental level. Note that bending of light in GTR represents a purely metric effect, which cannot depend on the energy of photons, whereas YARK conceptually allows the deflection of photons across a gravitational environment contingent upon either their wave-like or corpuscular-like behavior. In the case of “wave-like propagation”, which we deem particular to low-energy photons (including the visible range), YARK arrives at the same results as GTR; whereas for high-energy gamma-quanta, which we deem to signify “corpuscular-like propagation”, the deflection in a gravitational field practically vanishes in YARK. Given this opportunity to test YARK theory against GTR, we discuss possible experimental setups relevant to the subject.

“Moving the body is like religion and moving my body is the portal to that place.” This is one woman’s description of her practice of hoop dancing, a form of hula hooping that combines adult sized hoops and dance music. Her experience is not unique; in fact, the number of descriptions of hooping as a practice that is “like religion” serves as the basis of our research. In this essay, we examine the connection between embodied experiences in the hoop, the identification of those experiences as religious or spiritual, and the communities that are created as hoopers attempt to continually recapture the experiences (of flow) that they deem extraordinary. New religions studies is a field interested in the emergence of new religious paths, and our contribution to this academic discourse is in the form of an ethnography of value of the hoop community as an emerging religious path. Our work attempts to reconceptualize newness in the field through innovations in the hoop community. We examine the ways hoopers deem transformational experiences within the hoop as spiritual or religious and how they construct paths to truth and authenticity through embodied practice. These new religious movements are not institutional nor are they tied to formal creeds; rather, they reflect the ways in which religion has become a category of experience that can create meaningful communities of practice for individuals.

The task of obstacle avoidance using maritime vessels, such as Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USV), has traditionally been solved using specialized modules that are designed and optimized separately. However, this approach requires a deep insight into the environment, the vessel, and their complex dynamics. We propose an alternative method using Imitation Learning (IL) through Deep Reinforcement Learning (RL) and Deep Inverse Reinforcement Learning (IRL) and present a system that learns an end-to-end steering model capable of mapping radar-like images directly to steering actions in an obstacle avoidance scenario. The USV used in the work is equipped with a Radar sensor and we studied the problem of generating a single action parameter, heading. We apply an IL algorithm known as generative adversarial imitation learning (GAIL) to develop an end-to-end steering model for a scenario where avoidance of an obstacle is the goal. The performance of the system was studied for different design choices and compared to that of a system that is based on pure RL. The IL system produces results that indicate it is able to grasp the concept of the task and that in many ways are on par with the RL system. We deem this to be promising for future use in tasks that are not as easily described by a reward function.

AbstractThe present paper aims at examining one passage in the Old Latin and Vulgate translations of the Book of Jonah, where Jerome inserted a controversial change by translating the Hebrew qyqywn with the Latin haedera instead of the usual cucurbita. The reasons for this variation are neither immediately evident nor directly stated by the translator, but an analysis of iconographical documents will show that Jerome wanted to exclude the possibility of a millenarian interpretation, which, after the conversion of Constantine, he had to deem heretic.
