Crabs in the family Majoidae camouflage by decorating their exoskeletons with organisms and debris from their environment. This form of camouflage, involving both the act of decorating and carrying of these decorations, is thought to be energetically costly, and may present a trade-off under stressful environmental conditions. The energetic cost of decoration behavior has been evinced by reduced organic content due to elevated metabolism. In the context of previous research demonstrating that many marine calcifiers experience metabolic costs under experimental ocean acidification conditions, we hypothesized that decorator crabs exposed to reduced pH will have insufficient energy to support regulatory processes along with decoration behavior. Thus, we predicted that energy will be allocated towards growth and calcification at the expense of decoration behavior. Dwarf teardrop crabs, Pelia tumida, were exposed to ambient (pH = 8.0, pCO2 = 613 µatm) and reduced (pH = 7.75, pCO2 = 894 µatm) pH conditions for five weeks. Half of the animals in each treatment were given two sponge species, Halichondria panacea and Haliclona permollis, to decorate with, whereas the remaining animals were not allowed to decorate. At the end of the experiment, all animals were analyzed for exoskeleton mineral content (Ca and Mg) using EDX and ICP-MS, organic content (a proxy for metabolism) using TGA, and decoration behavior by quantifying sponge mass and percent cover. Overall, decorator crabs showed no signs of energy limitation under reduced pH conditions. Neither growth, exoskeleton mineral content, nor organic content of crabs differed among pH or decoration treatments. In addition, both sponge mass and percent cover remained the same across pH treatments, indicating no effect of reduced pH on decoration behavior, and thus the ability to camouflage. The maintenance of physiological processes without metabolic costs in P. tumida exposed to reduced pH radiates from the emerging trends on the susceptibility of crustaceans to changes in ocean chemistry associated with ocean acidification.

Abstract: The amphi-American genus, Macrocoeloma Miers, 1879, is composed of decorator crabs from tropical and subtropical regions. These crabs are found on distinct substrates, including mainly coral reefs and rock. Macrocoeloma has undergone several systematic changes in its family status, since the original description until its recent exclusion of Mithracidae. Prior to this study, Macrocoeloma was considered incertae sedis, due to little knowledge of the relationships between species of the genus and related genera, and its taxonomic revision has been suggested several times in the literature. Thus, in order to address these taxonomic and phylogenetics gaps, this study employed morphological and molecular approaches to reconstruct the phylogenetic relationships of Macrocoeloma. We used a combined molecular dataset of a nuclear (18S) and three mitochondrial genes (12S, 16S, COI) using Maximum Likelihood and Bayesian Inference. In addition, the inference of species delimitation was performed with the Poisson tree processes model (PTP), using Maximum Likelihood phylogeny of the mitochondrial COI gene. The taxonomic revision of Macrocoeloma was provided with elaborated diagnosis, detailed descriptions and maps of geographic distribution based on examined material. The monophyly of Macrocoeloma was demonstrated after exclusion of Pericera heptacantha and P. septemspinosa. The monotypic genus Thersandrus Rathbun, 1897 is a sister group of Macrocoeloma, followed by the new genus proposed ... (Complete abstract click electronic access below)

Guidoboni, Francesco. "Giovanni Niccolo' Servandoni (1695-1766) : architetto." Thesis, Paris 1, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014PA010621.
This research work - a phd thesis in co-supervision between the "Sapienza" University of Rome and the University of Paris 1 "Panthéon-Sorbonne" - was born with the aim of shedding light on the life and work of the architect Giovanni Niccolo Servandoni, one of the most emblematic figures and less-known artist of the eighteenth century. At the same time he was painter, architect and decorator and his name was famous thanks to a large number of sets made for the Opéra and to the design of the façade of the church of Saint-Sulpice in Paris. During his life, Servandoni had the opportunity to travel throughout Europe, where he worked for the major courts of that time, from Paris to London, from Lisbon to Brussels, Vienna, Dresden and Stuttgart. The research work has the objective to investigating especially the lesser-known aspects of the architect's life, like as the period of his training in Florence and Rome, the years where he lived in England before his arrival in Paris in 1724, his travels in Europe and his architectural work as well as the site of Saint-Sulpice, both in France and abroad. Thanks to this research, Servandoni's complete work- so vaguely interpreted as an anticipation of the "goût à la grecque" and the revival of the classicism of the late of eighteenth century - is reinterpreted as the result of his training in Italy and England. It is indebted, in fact, that as well the classicism that characterized the Florentine architecture of that period as his close contact with the English Palladian circle and with the Wren, Vanbrugh and Hawksmoor's works, exercised a great influence on him
This doctoral research focuses on the cultural history of the Société des artistes décorateurs (SAD), a non-profit association recognized as a public utility from 1901 to 2007. The aim is to understand the extent to which the desire for recognition orchestrated by decorative artists was justified and successful. Drawing on a previously unpublished archive held at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, we propose to chronologically capture the various stages in the legitimization process, based on a variety of actions, both vertical (the project to create a state-recognized order of decorators) and horizontal (exhibiting at the Grand Palais on the same footing as other artists' societies). At the heart of the process was the Salon, conceived as a unique space for production (prototypes were created after the Second World War), distribution and reception. Through the organization of its Salons, from 1904 to 2007, the history of SAD is nourished by an aesthetic understanding of the object, articulated to the processes from which it emerged (formation, production, promotion and distribution systems). In the second half of the twentieth century, the field of design expanded. It still includes furniture, ceramics and tapestries, but also walkmans, motorcycles and industrial design. We propose to understand the legitimizing processes of these artistic and utilitarian expressions. However, a figure is emerging and asserting itself, that of the interior architect, whose various aspects we will identify, notably on the basis of a historical semantic analysis. The title of this study, "Putting the institutionalization of the decorative arts in France to the test", clarifies the problem. Institutionalization refers to the process by which the decorative arts are recognized by public authorities and integrated into cultural and social institutions. We will show the processes of institutionalization between entrepreneurial, governmental and corporatist bodies (associations, unions), dialectically articulated with the figure of the individual creator. The aim of our research is also to understand the role of SAD in the historiography of twentieth-century French decorative arts
Tang, Ruey-Er. "Computer utilization in interior design: designer attitudes, function application, and equipment usage." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1985. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/45658.
This research investigated the extent of computer usage in the interior design profession including attitudes toward computers, computer applications, and computer equipment usage. A questionnaire was sent to five hundred professional members of the American Society of Interior Designers across the nation.
The frequency distribution was used on 169 usable data to describe the sample background characteristics and to determine the computer equipment utilization. Means and TV test were employed to examine if a significant difference of opinion toward computers existed between designers based on experience on computers, size of organizations, and type of projects.
Findings which were statistically significant indicated that computer-experienced and non-residential interior designers had more positive attitudes toward computers. More computers had been incorporated into non-residential interior designersâ offices. Overall, interior designers from various backgrounds had the same opinion in believing that computers were not cost-effective for drafting application for most interior designers or for their own establishments at present. The most popular computer applications in this study were billing, accounting, financial management, specification, and business correspondence. Furthermore, the IBM personal computer was found to be the most used microcomputer in this study.

During the second half of the 19th century, the upholsterer-decorator was a key figure in interior decoration. This thesis takes a cross-disciplinary approach, examining both the socio-economic environment of the profession and the creative history of its members. As a furniture dealer and decorator, the upholsterer designs, manufactures and installs the entire interior decor. This includes drapes, curtains, carpets and upholstery for seats, beds and fireplaces. As well as studying the economic, technical and social aspects of the profession and its organisation, our thesis analyses the work and production of upholsterers, from the introduction of fantasy and comfort to the attempts at revival at the turn of the 20th century. We look at their role in prescribing taste through the Universal Exhibitions and, in particular, the changes in their industry as a result of competition from cabinetmakers and department stores. Upholsterers were specialists in the use of textiles, and their work was quickly associated with the abundance of draperies and fringes. Yet behind the criticism levelled at the end of the 19th century at the supposed excesses of their work lies a rich and varied output. This study sheds new light on the decorative ensembles of these upholsterers and their artistic practice at the heart of a rapidly changing furniture industry

ABSTRACT: Portugal and Azerbaijan had a strong Islamic influence in the past. Even nowadays, we can experience signs of this cultural heritage, and the tangible and intangible impact in both countries. It is noticeable in many areas likewise in architecture. In Portugal, despite many examples of Islamic heritage influence have been lost or destroyed, there still are in some particular cities a remarkable architecture and ornamentation legacy. On the other hand, the situation in Azerbaijan is slightly different due to the fact that the majority of Azerbaijan’s population is Muslim. Therefore, there are still many living examples of Islamic geometric motifs in architecture and eventually, a living tradition. The present dissertation is part of an ongoing research project entitled “Biomimetics and Digital Morphogenesis” enrolled at the CIAUD Research Centre of the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Lisbon. The main focus of this work will be given to girih - a particular geometric pattern used in Islamic decoration, which can be found in a wide area from Portugal to Azerbaijan. The geometric patterns in Portugal were used mainly in “azulejos”, "alfarge" and some stucco works, while in Azerbaijan, they are employed in different manners of designing mainly stone decorations and glass decorations on "shebeke" (an art of creating windows consisting of colorful glass and small wooden details attached without glue or nail using). Nevertheless, all of the decorative elements deployed use a range of symmetries that have now been classified as belonging to distinct mathematical groups. But the subtlety and beauty of the designs are unparalleled in modern mathematical thinking and design. Thus, our goal is to try to establish a relationship between the survey examples of Islamic geometric patterns in Portugal and Azerbaijan; to assemble a parallel between those decorative elements in both countries; and try to establish if there are some connections, similarities and the levels of correspondence.

Carbon nanotubes since they are observed for the first time have been attracted attention due to their structure and unique electronic properties. Many applications, as support materials for catalysts, are proposed because of their aspect ration and good electrical conductivity. These properties favor a better dispersion and stabilization of the metallic nanoparticles, increasing the number of catalytic active atoms. In this work, we produced multi- walled carbon nanotubes (MWNT) with good structural properties using the Spray Pyrolysis method. We found the optimum parameters for the growth of high quality MWNT, namely, the gas flux and the concentration of the precursor solution, 1800 sccm and 2,0-2,9 wt %, respectively. The nanotubes were decorated via a chemical route, being the most efficient process the one where the cobalt nitrate was diluted in acetone with the formation of a homogeneous cobalt oxide particles-MWNT powder, with a subsequent reduction in H2 atmosphere at 573K. The structural characterization was performed by a multitechnique approach, including Raman spectroscopy, transmission and scanning electron microscopes (TEM and SEM) and x-ray diffraction (XRD).

Today sundials are elements of the facade solution of buildings or independent street/ park constructions. They have individual constructive solutions and architectural design that reminding about the old way of measuring time. In the urban environment, the most common are the clock with the vertical dial. Recently, the popularity of watches with horizontal dial, which are located in the territories of parks, squares, quays, etc., is increasing. Formulation of the problem. Each type of sundial has it own advantages and disadvantages. The mode of operation is common to them - only by clear skies. Users of vertical watch can keep track of time from a distance. Horizontal clock watches require the presence of users at short distances or allow them to become a direct participants in the definition of time. The object of study is the urban environment of Kyiv.

Nanotechnology is a rising field and nanomaterials (NMs) can now be found in a vast variety of products that can go from medical equipment to cosmetics. NMs attract much attention due to their high reactivity, a result of high surface area to volume ratio. They can present different chemical compositions, sizes and shapes which can alter their behaviour. Due to their increase of production and presence in consumer products, NMs can end up in the environment due to unintentional or intentional release. Although many studies have focused on the toxicity of NMs, different results can be found for NMs with the same chemical composition. This is due to the fact that abiotic and biotic factors can alter the NMs bioavailability and therefore their toxicity, along with the diversity of their inherent characteristics. The presence of other NMs or chemicals in the environment can also affect NMs toxicity, increasing or decreasing their toxicity. Also, new nanomaterials combining NM-NM are being development due to their enhancing characteristics when compared to NMs or nanoparticles (NPs) alone. Therefore, it is important to understand how they will behave in the environment. Taking this into account, the main objective of this work was to evaluate the toxicity of a NM composed by ZnO-NM with Ag-NP on its surface (ZnO/Ag-NM) and try to understand if its toxicity can be predicted by the toxicity of the single components. With this purpose, the toxicity in Daphnia magna was evaluated to ZnO-NM and Ag-NP as single components, as a laboratory mixture and then compared to the toxicity of the ZnO/Ag-NM. To assess toxicity, immobilization and reproduction tests were performed. Also, the mixture toxicity and the toxicity of the ZnO/Ag-NM were analysed using the MixTox tool, based on the concentration addition model and possible deviations for synergism/antagonism (S/A), dose-level (DL) and dose-ratio (DR) were explored. ZnO-NM and Ag-NPs showed an increase toxicity to Daphnia magna with increasing concentrations. Decrease of survival after 48h and decrease in the number of neonates produce during 21 days were observed for both NMs with Ag-NPs demonstrating the highest toxicity. The mixture exposures showed a deviation dependency on the doses used (DL) for immobilisation and for reproduction a synergism deviation was observed. ZnO/Ag-NM showed higher toxicity when comparing to the ZnO-NM alone. When analysing the results with the MixTox tool a deviation dependent on the chemical present (DR) was observed for immobilization and a dose level deviation (DL) for reproduction. This study demonstrates that both, the mixture and the ZnO/Ag-NM, will not behave as their components and the toxicity cannot be predicted by them, highlighting the importance of taking into account the interaction NM-NM when assessing NMs toxicity.

This dissertation investigates aesthetics of African design and decoration in the work of major contemporary artists of African descent who address heritage, history, and life experience. My project focuses on the work of three representative contemporary artists, African American artists Kehinde Wiley and Nick Cave, and Ghanaian artist El Anatsui. Their work represents practices and tendencies among a much broader group of painters and sculptors who employ elaborate textures and designs to express drama and emotion throughout the Black Atlantic world. I argue that extensive patterning, embellishment, and ornamentation are employed by many contemporary artists of African descent as a strategy for reinterpreting the art historical canon and addressing critical social issues, such as war, devastation of the earth's environment, and lack of essential resources for survival in many parts of the world. Many artworks also present historical revisions that reflect the experience of Black peoples who were brought to the Americas through the transatlantic slave trade, lived under colonial rule, or witnessed aspects of post-colonial struggle. The disorderliness of intersecting designs could also symbolize gaps in memory and traumas that will not heal. They reflect the manner in which Black Atlantic peoples have pieced together ancestral histories from a patchwork of sources. Polyrhythmic decoration enables their work to act as vessels of experience, allowing viewers to bring together multiple histories and social references.

Due to the interior decoration industry must change the work environment with the construction of the case, the operating characteristics of different industries and general construction site environmental constraints, the height of construction, or for a long time to maintain the same movements and other factors, which affect the body's musculoskeletal, thus interior decoration practitioners musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) increased risk. This study aimed to explore the risk of the musculoskeletal disorders on interior decorator. For example, wood workers, whitewashed workers and mud workers were the main research work. This study was record the working posture in field construction site and use Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA) to observe labor working posture to assess the risk of musculoskeletal disorders. In addition, use of the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire (NMQ), to understand the frequency and manner of practitioners’ symptoms, thus clearer understanding of the injury and to prevent it. The results showed that interior decoration employed has been aging phenomenon in recent years, often using their operations pose for standing, bending and kneeling squatting, wood workers and mud workers for the most in need of improvement in the job, thus this study recommends greater use of assistive devices and protective gear before and after the operation to do simple calisthenics, to reduce the risk of musculoskeletal disorder.

Since 2005, the green building materials used from 5% to 45%. The research explores the knowledge and usage of green building materials that people who work in interior design and decoration & management. The practitioners did questionnaire surveys that I chose from three areas. The thesis summarized in three propositions through the reorganized and discussed. Firstly, people know that green build materials can reduce volatile hazardous substances efficiently. But there are nearly half people ignorance the amount of use that accorded to the current law. Second. When people choose the green materials, except of the regulations, the motive is the owner asked instead of reason of health. And the most important part is the cost. Finally, we divide the green building materials into paint, ceiling, partition, floor and cabinet. The majorities do not use the green materials since the price. It will prove the desire if the government provides the rewards. And it’s helpful for promoting the materials.
