Abstract:
Art Deco emerged from the change of thinking ways of a group of people who one of them backed from the establishment of the economy. In Surakarta, there are areas that get influence Art Deco style, among others: Baluwarti, Laweyan, and Kauman. The problem is the absorption and adaptation of elements of Javanese culture and other culture that produce different art deco typology in each object of study. This study aims to compare the absorption and adaptation of elements of Javanese culture and other culture that produces different art deco typologies in three different areas in Surakarta. With different backgrounds, the absorption and adaptation of Art Deco style in residential houses in each region is different. But the common thread is the absorption of several styles, namely: Java, Art Deco, Art Nouveau, Middle East, and China which finally created the eclectic Art Deco style.

Abstract:
This paper analyzes the founding bases of comparisons between the Aleksandr Deineka’s artistic works and the art deco, the connection between Deineka’s works and European and American art of the 1930s Deineka’s early works refer to the avant-garde and the late ones are usually related to socialist realism. The novel artistic language is the most important link between the Soviet art and the art deco style, making the artist its most prominent USSR proponent. In this respect, the key event is the artist’s trip to the USA, France and Italy in 1935. What made Deineka engage in the intercultural discussion on artistic styles were industrial, urban, mundane and sport themes the Soviet art and art deco (mostly American) shared. A dialogue with the US Skyscraper style influenced a series of paintings and sketches, including New York. Central Park, The Road to Mount Vernon, Baseball, The Boredom. The Soviet experience contributed to Deineka’s few American works. In the most clear and general manner the art deco ideas and practical solutions were incorporated in the 1938 project of Deineka – in the decoration of the Mayakovskaya metro station, Moscow. The idea was to create a series of allegoric and technically new mosaic plafonds. Both spirit and techniques of late Deineka were partly inspired by the American art deco.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract Motivation Patient and sample diversity is one of the main challenges when dealing with clinical cohorts in biomedical genomics studies. During last decade, several methods have been developed to identify biomarkers assigned to specific individuals or subtypes of samples. However, current methods still fail to discover markers in complex scenarios where heterogeneity or hidden phenotypical factors are present. Here, we propose a method to analyze and understand heterogeneous data avoiding classical normalization approaches of reducing or removing variation. Results DEcomposing heterogeneous Cohorts using Omic data profiling (DECO) is a method to find significant association among biological features (biomarkers) and samples (individuals) analyzing large-scale omic data. The method identifies and categorizes biomarkers of specific phenotypic conditions based on a recurrent differential analysis integrated with a non-symmetrical correspondence analysis. DECO integrates both omic data dispersion and predictor–response relationship from non-symmetrical correspondence analysis in a unique statistic (called h-statistic), allowing the identification of closely related sample categories within complex cohorts. The performance is demonstrated using simulated data and five experimental transcriptomic datasets, and comparing to seven other methods. We show DECO greatly enhances the discovery and subtle identification of biomarkers, making it especially suited for deep and accurate patient stratification. Availability and implementation DECO is freely available as an R package (including a practical vignette) at Bioconductor repository (http://bioconductor.org/packages/deco/). Supplementary information Supplementary data are available at Bioinformatics online.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Many of the existing electrocardiogram (ECG) toolboxes focus on the derivation of heart rate variability features from RR-intervals. By doing so, they assume correct detection of the QRS-complexes. However, it is highly likely that not all detections are correct. Therefore, it is recommended to visualize the actual R-peak positions in the ECG signal and allow manual adaptations. In this paper we present R-DECO, an easy-to-use graphical user interface (GUI) for the detection and correction of R-peaks. Within R-DECO, the R-peaks are detected by using a detection algorithm which uses an envelope-based procedure. This procedure flattens the ECG and enhances the QRS-complexes. The algorithm obtained an overall sensitivity of 99.60% and positive predictive value of 99.69% on the MIT/BIH arrhythmia database. Additionally, R-DECO includes support for several input data formats for ECG signals, three basic filters, the possibility to load other R-peak locations and intuitive methods to correct ectopic, wrong, or missed heartbeats. All functionalities can be accessed via the GUI and the analysis results can be exported as Matlab or Excel files. The software is publicly available. Through its easy-to-use GUI, R-DECO allows both clinicians and researchers to use all functionalities, without previous knowledge.

Abstract:
Based on a case study on Miami Beach’s acclaimed iconic art deco architectural district, this article critically dovetails intersecting hegemonic spaces of preservation, memorial practices and social and sexual identities. It argues how commemorative narratives are selectively encrypted in the local urban environment and its artefacts deemed of historical significance. It especially reveals the tensions arising between art deco (i.e. architectural) preservation and gay (i.e. social) urban preservation, as well as its under-studied largely entrepreneurial nature and attraction for a mainstream, cosmopolitan class under neoliberalism. Drawing from extensive archival, policy, observational, participatory and interview data over 2013–2015, the article revisits in historical perspective how the art deco area, incarnated in the 1920s, developed across class-, ethnicity-, religion- and age-inflected social fragmentations and how this legacy, from the late-1970s onward, segued into the local gay-led preservation movement and select commemorations of the art deco scene. To this background, the study employs the tenet of ‘queerying’ to address the under-researched coalescing frictions in preservation between perceived authentic and engineered trajectories of (gay) place (re)makings alongside reminiscences selected over others. The findings uncover and challenge (un)intentional ‘(un)rememberings’ of the local early history and the recent past, where socially fragmented fault lines and the more recent gay-led preservation track remain overly homogeneously imprinted in dominant preservation communications and performance.

Abstract:
This paper aims to present a research study concerning the graphics and symbols in logo design exhibited in an art program dubbed ‘Golden Ages of Art Nouveau and Art Deco’. It was important for us to understand these trends, their characteristics and graphics, to create many times beautiful masterpieces of art. We have noticed a lot of differences between these two art movements related to symbols, signs and colours which were used. It was ‘a special art travel’ to study, theoretically and practically, the field of logo design connected to these ages. Starting from our research study, we have tried to make ‘a basket’ of features which characterises each trend. We have tried to explain the diversity of elements used as an art graphic design focused on logos. And, of course, we have tried to create logos using the features of Art Nouveau and Art Deco. Keywords: Art Nouveau, Art Deco, logo design, feature, symbols, colours.

Abstract:
The subject of this research is the distinctions between two fundamental trends in art of the XX century – art deco and avant-garde, as well as determination of the nature of their interaction. The object of this research is the original texts of artisans and art monuments belonging to both fields. Special attention is given to characteristics of the specific features of art deco and avant-garde, identification of similarities and differences of the two simultaneously developing stylistic concepts. The author examines the key event for the history of interaction of these two trends, namely the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts held in Paris in 1925, and criticism that formed views on art of the era of modernism. The scientific novelty consists in examination of the two paramount trends for grasping history of culture of the XX century in the context of their interaction. Since 1966, art deco was not recognized as an in dependent style, but rather closely connected with modernism and patterned on avant-garde. The main conclusion of the conducted research consists in revelation of adaptive cultural mechanism that allowed art deco to overcome a number of problems, among which in underlines the relation to technological progress and mass society. The author highlights that both trends should be viewed in the context of cultural dialogue. First and foremost, they were united by orientation towards modernity and development of innovative language of art.

Abstract:
An atomic commit protocol can cause long-term locking of databases if the coordinator crashes or becomes disconnected from the network. In this paper we describe how to eliminate the coordinator. This decentralized, cooperative atomic commit protocol piggybacks transaction statuses of all transaction participants onto tokens which are passed among the participants. Each participant uses the information in the tokens to make a decision of when to go to the next state of a three-phase commit protocol. Transactions can progress to ensure a uniform agreement on success or failure, even if the network is partitioned or nodes temporarily crash.
