Anderson, Michael, and Corinne Roughley. Scottish National Mortality and its Wider Context. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198805830.003.0016.

Full text
Abstract:
In historical studies of Scottish mortality compared with other countries, expectation of life at birth is highly misleading because, until the early twentieth century, Scotland’s relatively low infant mortality conceals the fact that age-specific death rates at almost all other ages were higher than the closest comparators in western Europe. Scotland has continued to have worse mortality at all ages because Scottish infant mortality, along with death rates at most other ages, failed to decline at the same rate as these other countries in Europe. Nevertheless, expectation of life at all ages did eventually improve at all ages (except most recently for young adult males), though at very varying speeds over time. This allowed survival rates to increase quite markedly, with very few children dying in childhood, most still-married couples living long enough to celebrate many more wedding anniversaries, and most children to know their grand- or even their great-grandparents.

Abstract:
There were big changes in numbers of births and birth rates in Scotland over the period coved by this book. Compared with elsewhere and England in particular, fertility in Scotland has always been restrained by low levels of nuptiality, but for most of our period fertility within marriage has been higher. This was especially true from the start of the fertility decline in the 1860s/1870s. At all periods there have been major differences between parts of the country in rates of marital fertility and non-marital fertility, but which areas were the highest, and the reasons for the variations, changed over time. All areas, however, have shared a major rise in non-marital fertility since the 1980s, mostly due to the rise in births to non-married couples. There have also been major changes over time in the age profile of motherhood and in the distribution between families of different sizes.

Nikolaou, Dimitrios S., and David B. Seifer, eds. Optimizing the Management of Fertility in Women over 40. Cambridge University Press, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.1017/9781009025270.

Full text
Abstract:
Reproductive aging is a natural and universal process. Women frequently overestimate the age at which a significant decline in fertility occurs as well as overestimate the success of assisted reproductive technologies to circumvent age-related infertility. Yet there is much that modern medicine can do to improve conception rates in women who delay childbearing and to manage subsequent pregnancies. This book offers guidance on winning strategies for maximizing the live-birth rate and limiting the risk for women trying to conceive later in life. It is intended to assist in navigating this challenging journey and lead to peace of mind that women have been seen, heard, and treated as individuals in the process. Written by leading experts addressing medical options of applying advanced reproductive technologies, psychological, nutritional, lifestyle, systematic approaches to optimizing fertility care for the most challenging demographic of women in a practical, clinically orientated, and most importantly, positive way.

Abstract:
India experienced substantial mortality decline in the decades after 1971. By 2016 life expectation probably averaged about 68 years. However, much of the mortality decline resulted from narrow technical developments (e.g. immunizations) and was not always matched by commensurate advances in the state of the population’s health. The Emergency of 1975–77 led to sterilization excesses, and there was a backlash against the family planning programme. Subsequently, political leaders generally avoided talking about family planning and population growth. Partly as a result, the pace of fertility decline during 1971–2016 was slow. By 2016 the average level of fertility was about 2.4 births per woman. It was not until the 2001–11 intercensal decade that there was an appreciable fall in the rate of population growth. Consequently, between 1971 and 2016 the population grew from 548 million to more than 1.3 billion.
