Abstract:
PurposeThe study investigates how the congruence of online deal popularity and star rating influences service quality expectation in online group buying (OGB) websites. It also investigates the role of authenticity perceptions of online cues.Design/methodology/approachTwo experiments are used to assess the effects of congruence between deal popularity and star rating on service quality expectation for service deals in an OGB website.FindingsThe findings suggest that a combination of congruently high deal popularity and high star rating has a stronger effect on expected service quality than a combination of congruently low cues. The findings further suggest that expected service quality is greater under the combination of high deal popularity and low star rating than the combination of low deal popularity and high star rating, showing the differences between incongruent cue combinations. The findings also show the moderating effect of consumer authenticity perceptions of cues on the expected service quality.Originality/valueThe novel contribution of the study is to extend cue congruence theory to explain how congruent online information cues and the consumers' authenticity perceptions of the cues influence consumers' judgment of online deals. The contribution is validated empirically in the context of OGB. The findings advance current knowledge concerning how consumers use online information cues.

Abstract:
Law firms provide extensive intermediation in corporate acquisitions, including negotiation, certification, and drafting of contracts and agreements. Using a broad sample of U.S. acquisition offers, we find that large-market-share law firms are regularly called upon to facilitate completion of large, legally-complex offers. Complex offers are often withdrawn but, controlling for complexity; large-share law firms are associated with enhanced deal completion. Further, we document that some law firms are consistently associated with deal completion over time, and that acquirers with good deal completion experience use fewer different law firms. Acquirers‟ risk-adjusted returns, though, are smaller around announcements of offers advised by large-share law firms. Post-offer long-run returns of the acquirers are also lower and often negative following offers advised by large-share law firms. We find no evidence that particular law firms are consistently associated over time with strong returns. Our conclusion is that large law firms enhance deal completion in difficult situations, consistent with the aims of acquirer management. However, we find no systematic evidence that these popular law firms act as “gatekeepers” in the sense of not wanting to be associated with value-destroying deals.

Abstract:
Owing to rapid development of the Internet and the rise of the big data era, microblog has become the main means for people to spread and obtain information. If people can accurately predict the development trend of a microblog event, it will be of great significance for the government to carry out public relations activities on network event supervision and guide the development of microblog event reasonably for network crisis. This paper presents effective solutions to deal with trend prediction of microblog events’ popularity. Firstly, by selecting the influence factors and quantifying the weight of each factor with an information entropy algorithm, the microblog event popularity is modeled. Secondly, the singular spectrum analysis is carried out to decompose and reconstruct the time series of the popularity of microblog event. Then, the box chart method is used to divide the popularity of microblog event into various trend spaces. In addition, this paper exploits the Bi-LSTM model to deal with trend prediction with a sequence to label model. Finally, the comparative experimental analysis is carried out on two real data sets crawled from Sina Weibo platform. Compared to three comparative methods, the experimental results show that our proposal improves F1-score by up to 39%.

Abstract:
This study examines the choice of boutique financial advisors in mergers and acquisitions, and the consequences of this choice on deal outcomes and post-acquisition performance. Boutique advisors often specialize in a particular industry and focus exclusively on providing advice in mergers and acquisitions. The results suggest that boutique financial advisors are preferred when the deal is considered complex and when information asymmetry is high. The study finds that the benefits of hiring a boutique advisor flow to both the acquirers and the target firms. Acquiring firms benefit in terms of improved post-merger performance, while target firms benefit in terms of higher completion of value-enhancing deals and positive cumulative abnormal returns. Overall, these results provide support for the growing popularity of boutique financial advisors in the Australian market. JEL classification: G24, G34

Abstract:
The optimized learner evaluation matrix and similarity model are essential methods to deal with the challenges of “data sparsity” and “cold start” in the process of learning resource recommendation on the online learning platform. Accordingly, an improved collaborative filtering algorithm (TRCP) is proposed to improve the accuracy of learning resource recommendation. The TRCP algorithm generates the learner evaluation matrix for recommended projects by classifying learning resources. It comprehensively considers the influence of learners’ online learning behavior, learning time, and popularity of learning resources on learners’ interest and optimizes the sample data in the evaluation matrix. The experimental results on the school online teaching platform verified that this method has achieved obvious and effective results in both the accuracy and satisfaction rate of learning resource recommendation.

Full text
Abstract:
The "Commentariolum Petitionis" has long served to demonstrate the validity of the theory that Republican electoral politics were founded on relationships of patronage that permeated the entire society, and that appeals to the voting citizenry were relatively unimportant for election. Yet the attention the author pays to the necessity of cultivating the popularis voluntas strongly implies that a successful canvasser cannot rely on the direct or indirect ties of patronage and amicitia but must win the electoral support of the anonymous mass of voters. A consular campaign emerges as to a great extent a public performance before the populus in which the candidate seeks to demonstrate to those who do not know him personally that he is dignus consulatu. While the exploitation of personal connections is undeniably important, certain features of the treatment of the studia amicorum in the Commentariolum suggest that the traditional, Gelzerian emphasis on noble patronage is misplaced. Noble allies are particularly prized not for networks of clients but for the luster they shed on a candidate; on the other hand, the homines gratiosi whose electioneering activities are most suggestive of patronage tend to be of middle and lower rank. Nor can all the personal political relationships discussed in the Commentariolum be plausibly subsumed under the concept of patronage, which entails asymmetry between the parties and a connection of some duration; rather, the picture presented here is one of a relatively "free market" of political deal-making between candidates and vote-brokers. The "Commentariolum Petitionis" offers no obstacle to a new model of Republican politics that assigns a much greater role to symbolic appeals to a voting citizenry, and a less dominant role to personal patronage, than have until recently been accepted.

Abstract:
Personalized trip recommendation tries to recommend a sequence of point of interests (POIs) for a user. Most of existing studies search POIs only according to the popularity of POIs themselves. In fact, the routes among the POIs also have attractions to visitors, and some of these routes have high popularity. We term this kind of route as Attractive Route (AR), which brings extra user experience. In this paper, we study the attractive routes to improve personalized trip recommendation. To deal with the challenges of discovery and evaluation of ARs, we propose a personalized Trip Recommender with POIs and Attractive Route (TRAR). It discovers the attractive routes based on the popularity and the Gini coefficient of POIs, then it utilizes a gravity model in a category space to estimate the rating scores and preferences of the attractive routes. Based on that, TRAR recommends a trip with ARs to maximize user experience and leverage the tradeoff between the time cost and the user experience. The experimental results show the superiority of TRAR compared with other state-of-the-art methods.

Abstract:
Large information cascades over online social networks have attracted a great deal of attention. The life times of most cascades are quite short, whereas recent advertising campaigns sometimes generate long-lived ones by employing effective dissemination strategies (instant-win, reminders, etc.). This paper reports one such campaign, YOGUR STAND, on the Twitter network in Japan. The data analysis shows that the campaign popularity has two interesting features. (1) It shows elastic behavior in that the impact of the destructive earthquake on the popularity was quite temporary. (2) It exhibits stationary behavior in that the campaign account gained approximately 2,000 new followers every day.The analysis also demonstrates that there were communities in the campaign participants. The campaign was successful because about 2.4 million Twitter users received the campaign retweets every day and 10-15% of them received the retweets for the first time.

Abstract:
The increasing popularity of crowdsourcing platforms, i.e., Amazon Mechanical Turk, changes how datasets for supervised learning are built. In these cases, instead of having datasets labeled by one source (which is supposed to be an expert who provided the absolute gold standard), databases holding multiple annotators are provided. However, most state-of-the-art methods devoted to learning from multiple experts assume that the labeler’s behavior is homogeneous across the input feature space. Besides, independence constraints are imposed on annotators’ outputs. This paper presents a regularized chained deep neural network to deal with classification tasks from multiple annotators. The introduced method, termed RCDNN, jointly predicts the ground truth label and the annotators’ performance from input space samples. In turn, RCDNN codes interdependencies among the experts by analyzing the layers’ weights and includes l1, l2, and Monte-Carlo Dropout-based regularizers to deal with the over-fitting issue in deep learning models. Obtained results (using both simulated and real-world annotators) demonstrate that RCDNN can deal with multi-labelers scenarios for classification tasks, defeating state-of-the-art techniques.

Abstract:
<p>The Great Depression and the New Deal forged a mutually beneficial alliance between President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Mayor Frank Hague of Jersey City. Each needed the other. Hague benefited from the federal funds he was allocated by the New Deal relief agencies. Channeling this government assistance through his political machine in Jersey City enabled him to consolidate his control over Hudson County and ultimately become the dominant figure of the Democratic Party in New Jersey. In return, Hague pledged to secure New Jersey for Roosevelt in his reelection campaign. Ironically, Hague got the better of this arrangement. Roosevelt’s personal popularity would have ensured his reelection in 1936 regardless of Hague’s level of commitment. But by entrenching Hague’s authority, as the New Deal tide ebbed over the ensuing years, and elections in New Jersey became more competitive, the President became ever more dependent on the capacity of the Mayor to deliver the votes he needed. This necessitated a policy of willful indifference towards Hague’s increasingly autocratic and corrupt maladministration.</p>

Abstract:
This study looks at references made to Sweden in U.S. newspaper and magazine articles discussing Swedish crime fiction. Books by authors such as Stieg Larsson and Henning Mankell have enjoyed a great deal of popularity in the United States in recent years, and institutions such as the Swedsh Institute in Stockholm have expressed the hope that this popularity will result in greater interest in and knowledge about Sweden. The findings of the study, however, suggest that such is not necessarily the case. U.S. media references to the home country of Larsson and Mankell tend to follow stereotypes and focus on the country’s cold climate, or to see Sweden solely as the origin of products and pop-culture phenomena already familiar to Americans, such as IKEA, Volvo and ABBA. The study considers this view of Sweden part of a larger trend in U.S. mass media away from politics and social issues and toward consumer-oriented news.

Abstract:
Social media is in a dynamic environment of real-time interaction, and users generate overwhelming and high-dimensional information at all times. A new case-based reasoning (CBR) method combined with attribute features mining for posting-popularity prediction in online communities is explored from the perspective of imitating human knowledge reasoning in artificial intelligence. To improve the quality of algorithms for CBR approach retrieval and extraction and describe high-dimensional network information in the form of the CBR case, the idea of intrinsically interpretable attribute features is proposed. Based on the theory and research of the social network combined with computer technology of data analysis and text mining, useful information could be successfully collected from massive network information, from which the simple information features and covered information features are summarized and extracted to explain the popularity of the online automobile community. We convert complex network information into a set of interpretable attribute features of different data types and construct the CBR approach presentation system of network postings. Moreover, this paper constructs the network posting cases database suitable for the social media network environment. To deal with extreme situations caused by network application scenarios, trimming suggestions and methods for similar posting cases of the network community have been provided. The case study shows that the developed posting popularity prediction method is suitable for the complex social network environment and can effectively support decision makers to fully use the experience and knowledge of historical cases and find an excellent solution to forecasting popularity in the network community.

AbstractVehicular networks that deal with sharing of information among vehicles are gaining popularity among the automobile industry as well as the researchers. These networks are prevalent under the umbrella of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and deal with data that belongs to either the emergency category or the entertaining category. In case of emergency services, it is clear that - earlier the reception of information, lesser the commotion. The objective of this work thus has been the reduction of the end to end delay when video files are exchanged among vehicles during intersessions. The set objective is accomplished through the design and development of the technique “Instantly Decodable RaptorQ Inter-Sessions” (IDRQIS) for Vehicular Adhoc Networks and the results obtained show that this outperforms the existing popular techniques – the Network Coding and RaptorQ when applied independently to the same environment. This technique can also be applied to the upcoming unmanned vehicles.

Local politics in Latin America have been attracting a great deal of scholarly interest as of late (Fox 1994; Nickson 1995; Reilly 1995). This interest can be attributed in part to the simple fact that over the past two decades, the institutional weight of Latin American local governments has continued to grow, spurred as much by the popularity of decentralization policies as by the seminal crisis of the central states in the region. Faced with shrinking resources and painful structural adjustment programs, local governments were often left with no other choice but to divest themselves of responsibilities they could no longer meet.

Abstract:
This study analyses the impact of social media popularity on the global mergers and acquisitions (M&A) market using a sample of 66,905 M&A transactions across 50 countries for the sample period from 2011 to 2017. Social media influence on M&A transactions is tested using competing bids and proportion of cash paid in the transaction deal characteristics. We find that social media popularity has increased the probability of competing bids by 7.7% across countries and the proportion of cash paid in transactions decreased by 2.5% across countries. The results of additional analyses using the introduction of the internet are consistent with the conclusion that technologies that enhance the transmission of public information have an effect on the M&A variables tested. We test the robustness of our results using subsample analysis and placebo tests. This study is distinct from existing literature due to its globally diverse M&A dataset, unique social media and internet data, and cross-country approach to social media’s influence on financial markets.

Abstract:
The world wide web (WWW) plays a significant role in information sharing and distribution. In web-based information access, the speed of information retrieval plays a critical role in shaping the web usability and determining the user satisfaction in accessing webpages. To deal with this problem, web caching is used. The problem with the present web caching system is that it is very hard to recognize webpages that are to be accessed and then to be cached. This is forced by the fact that there are broad categories of users and each one having their own preferences. Hence, it is decided to propose a novel approach for web access pattern generation by analyzing the web log file present in the proxy server. Further, it tries to propose a novel hybrid policy called popularity-aware modified least frequently used (PMLFU) that best suits for the current proxy-based web caching environment. It combines features such as frequency, recency, popularity, and user page count in decision-making policy. The performance of the proposed system is observed using real-time datasets, empirically using IRCACHE datasets.

With millions of adolescents participating in sports each year and with the popularity of sporting events ranging from the Super Bowl and the NBA playoffs to the Olympics, athletics is an important part of many teenagers’ lives. However, young adult sports literature is not just about the big game or the vicarious feeling of elation that comes with winning or the catharsis that comes with reading about defeat. Instead, as young adult author and scholar Chris Crowe (2004) notes, many young adult sports books are about more than sports. Instead, they “deal with realistic social issues that real people, not just athletes, often confront” (p. 36).

Abstract The principle that a ship is subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the flag State on the high seas is firmly established. But given the prevalence of open registries and the multiple challenges in the maritime sphere, such as maritime safety, the popularity of cruise holidays, the promotion of human rights for those working at sea, and the need to combat iuu fishing, is it any longer tenable to slavishly follow the principle? International instruments and judicial decisions have emphasised the responsibilities of flag States. But States have also increasingly turned to other mechanisms, especially port State control, to deal with the various problems.

AbstractDespite huge popularity and lasting cultural impact, reality television shows such as The X Factor, a British music competition that started screening in 2004, are seen by many as a cultural nadir. However, in this article I argue that, while reading reality TV as an index of an increasingly superficial, market-based culture makes a great deal of sense, it doesn't tell the whole story. Using the particular music-based dramas of The X Factor as a case study, I explore ways in which this show and populist reality television in general might be seen to embody both the predicaments and potential pressure points of contemporary neoliberal culture.

Language is basic to our sense of self, as is gender; how these are connected is intriguing. Language, gender, context, and power are interconnected and continue to be examined by sociolinguists and feminists. Deborah Cameron, a materialist radical feminist, has explored gender and language, looking at the dynamic of conflict in gender relations. Recently she has been examining evolutionary science and neuroscience in order to deal with the recurring popularity of biological essentialism (the notion that our genetic makeup determines who we are). This interview discusses some of Cameron’s groundbreaking research and is a prelude to the IGALA conference to be held September 18-20, 2010 in Tokyo.

Abstract:
This review examines how family businesses manage family-related conflicts that occur at three interfaces: family-business, family-ownership, and family-business-ownership. We find that work-family conflicts, conflicts of interest, and relationship conflicts are prevalent family-related conflicts. Four conflict management strategies are frequently used to deal with these conflicts: vacillation, domination, separation, and third-party intervention. The popularity of these strategies is influenced by some unique characteristics of family businesses, such as high emotional attachment among family members. By integrating insights from the broader conflict research, paradox and dialectic studies, we develop a research agenda targeted at better connecting family-related conflicts to conflict management strategies.

Abstract:
There is a great deal of research documenting the relationship of peers to academic achievement in late childhood and adolescence, but little work documenting the extent to which this holds for younger children. The current research examined the classroom social structure and academic achievement of inner-city African-American early elementary schoolchildren. Ninety-two (53 boys, 39 girls) first-graders from two inner-city schools were followed for 2 years. Teacher ratings of popularity and academic ability were positively related, and distinct peer groups marked by similar levels of achievement of constituent members were identified. Longitudinal analyses found support for selective affiliation based on academic achievement.

Abstract:
The high-altitude coffee growing, Arabica, is likely subject to the global warming effect as they are prone to leaf-rust attacks at a higher temperature. It supplied 70% of world coffee production for its popularity concerning its delicacy and aromatic flavor. Utilization of, genetically, superior planting materials, i.e. leaf-rust-tolerant Arabica, has become an essential point, as may provide the potential solution to prevent the lost production due to leaf-rust attack. Andungsari 2K (AS 2K), S795, AS1, and Sigararutang are some of the potential leaf-rust-tolerant Arabica clones in Indonesia. Vegetative propagation by somatic embryogenesis may support the availability of superior plant materials quickly. The major aim of this experiment was to study the effect of different clones on germination step after the preliminary stage of direct-embryogenesis from leaf explants with combinations of medium between auxin (2,4-D) and cytokinin (2-ip). Embryo germination stage where embryoid was transferred to the germination medium consisting of MS medium without hormones. The results revealed that the growth location and texture of callus, as well as growth patterns and colour of embryogenic callus, were significantly influenced through the different combinations of medium and clones. The clone of S795 exhibits the highest embryo germination percentage of up to 100% within 8 weeks experiment period.

Abstract:
In the years following World War II, the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) regained the political effectiveness it had lost during the New Deal. This article analyzes NAM's resurgence within the context of the rising popularity and political strength of organized business in the postwar period. It argues that NAM's success is only partly explained by external factors, such as the policies of Truman administration and divisions among labor organizations. NAM's renewed ability to shape national affairs resulted from an internal transformation that vastly improved its administrative capacity, and from a change in its public relations and labor policies. These efforts came to fruition when NAM proved able to dominate the proceedings of the 1945 Labor-Management Conference.

Abstract:
First, this paper sketches the development of labour history as a historical subdiscipline up to the 1970s and 1980s when it became a booming field, an area of great excitement and high productivity. Why this should have been the case is an interesting question to ask in hindsight. Secondly, I discuss certain trends in the last 10–15 years that are related to a decline in this field, not in terms of sophistication, but certainly with regard to the field's popularity among historians, students and the public. Dealing with this rather dramatic change might tell us something about the way my discipline – modern history with a stress on social history – works, where it gets its vitality from, its conjunctures and fashions. Thirdly, I present some personal ideas about how one could, and perhaps should, deal with the present situation, its problems and its opportunities. I am presently working on the third volume of a history of labour in 19th century Germany – a project to which I have returned after many years. Some of the general problems I have encountered in this project will also be dealt with, indirectly, in this paper.

Abstract:
(1) Background: Propensity score methods gained popularity in non-interventional clinical studies. As it may often occur in observational datasets, some values in baseline covariates are missing for some patients. The present study aims to compare the performances of popular statistical methods to deal with missing data in propensity score analysis. (2) Methods: Methods that account for missing data during the estimation process and methods based on the imputation of missing values, such as multiple imputations, were considered. The methods were applied on the dataset of an ongoing prospective registry for the treatment of unprotected left main coronary artery disease. The performances were assessed in terms of the overall balance of baseline covariates. (3) Results: Methods that explicitly deal with missing data were superior to classical complete case analysis. The best balance was observed when propensity scores were estimated with a method that accounts for missing data using a stochastic approximation of the expectation-maximization algorithm. (4) Conclusions: If missing at random mechanism is plausible, methods that use missing data to estimate propensity score or impute them should be preferred. Sensitivity analyses are encouraged to evaluate the implications methods used to handle missing data and estimate propensity score.

On its basis, two aspects of the creation of screenshots are highlighted: bodily-material and social framework. Analysis of both results in the description of screenshotitng as a dispersed practice and a key component of integrative practices, especially those that deal with proving the truth. Finally, those reflections lead to the postulate that screenshots should be given greater recognition in the social sciences as an important source of knowledge about everyday life on the internet.

<p>Postsurgical spine syndrome is becoming an increasingly common challenge for clinicians who deal with spinal disorders owing to the expanding indications for spinal surgery and the aging world population. A multidisciplinary approach is most appropriate for patients who are unlikely to benefit from further formal surgical intervention. Anticonvulsant medications are effective in managing neuropathic pain after surgery, whereas opioids are rarely beneficial. Neuromodulation via a surgically implanted dorsal column neurostimulator is gaining popularity owing to its substantial superiority over conventional medical management and/or further surgical intervention. However, considering that prevention is always better than cure, spinal surgeons need to be well aware of the many poor prognostic indicators for spinal surgery, particularly psychosocial overlay.</p>
