Abstract:
This article focuses mainly on three texts by the polish poetry Eugeniusz Tkaczyszyn‑Dycki that refer to baroque poet Józef Baka: Baka uwodzi Stefanię Dycką (Baka Seduces Stefania Dycka) Baka winny istnieniu Stefanii Dyckiej (Baka Guilty of Stefania Dycka’s Existence) Stefania Dycka poruszona widokiem Baki (Stefania Dycka Moved by Seeing Baka). We should remember that Dycki’s speech is centered around loss, so it is an attempt to invent a language that could bear the heterogeneity of death. To avoid slipping into silence, the author updates the old Polish tradition of funeral poetry, particularly the “black carnival” of late‑Baroque writer Józef Baka, which provides a specific ma‑ trix of meaning, of the way to communicate with oneself and with the reader. The subject of the analysis are therefore references to the threads of Baka’s poetry, which have been transformed in Dycki’s poetic discourse.

Abstract:
Among the roughly 150 Italian songbooks published between 1610 and 1665 with the guitar tablature known as alfabeto, about thirteen are anthologies. These anthologies often advertise the role of a compiler who has gathered together music by diverse authors. The extent to which compilers also functioned as authors and editors is not well understood. This essay considers the case of Giovanni Stefani, a compiler who, in the preface to his Scherzi amorosi of 1622, describes the anthology as a collection of his choosing that contains “varie compositioni de Virtuosi della prima classe” (various compositions of first-class virtuosos). Intriguingly, none of the settings Stefani prints (in both this alfabeto anthology and two others) include attributions. Since the 1880s, scholars have been preoccupied with matters of transmission and attribution, unearthing a network of textual and musical concordances. This article expands the nexus of Stefani’s songs and their concordant sources, revealing an array of examples that range from identical copies to “partial” concordances that take over motives, phrases, refrains, or harmonic schemes. These examples indicate that in preparing his anthologies, Stefani mined a corpus of existing prints and manuscripts while also relying heavily on oral transmission. The complex nature of Stefani’s approach, taken together with his complete avoidance of composer attributions, points toward an editorial process shaped by a fluid exchange between oral and written musical practices.

Abstract:
19th century ethnological research on the territory of Latvia in view of correspondence of Stefania Ulanowska to Jan KarłowiczLetters, which are the basis of the article, are a part of Jan Karlowicz’s (a 19th century ethnographer, lexicographer) heritage kept in the historical archive in Vilnius. They are evidence of correspondence between Jan Karłowicz and Stefania Ulanowska, the author of Łotysze Inflant Polskich, a w szczególności z gminy wielońskiej powiatu rzeżyckiego since October 1889 until January 1890 during Ulanowska’s stay in the village of Wielony, now Viļāni (Latvia). The correspondence is a source of rich material including information about Ulanowska that has not been published so far as well as data of Latgale’s and its inhabitants’ past. Moreover, it is a unique evidence of scientific peregrinations. These letters have their contribution in ethnographic research on the former territory of Poland as they show circumstances and methods of exploration used in the 19th century. At the same time they can be an interesting gloss for research over Latgalian dialects as far as names of material culture are concerned.

Abstract:
This paper contains a review of plays featuring Milan Rastislav Stefanik as the main character. It involves accessible examples of Slovak and Czech plays, which portray Stefanik as having features of a dramatic character. The paper concentrates on both contemporary plays and those emerging soon after his death. The staging of contemporary plays is analyzed with a focus on dramatic texts and plays that are mainly ceremonial and educational. These were performed, predominantly, in school environments or during celebrations commemorating Stefanik’s tragic death. The paper begins with a short biography of Štefánik.

Abstract:
I first met Stefanie Preissner when she signed up as a volunteer leader with Lightbulb Youth Theatre in Mallow, Cork. Having recently begun a BA in Drama and Theatre Studies in University College Cork, Stefanie had the interest in the work that allowed her to quickly become integral to Lightbulb, facilitating workshops and directing performances. We established a good working relationship, devising, writing and directing within the youth theatre before forming our own theatre company, ‘With an F Productions’, allowing us to take on different projects. Stefanie’s move to Dublin, after graduating from Drama and Theatre Studies, allowed her to develop her playwriting skills leading to the writing of ‘Solpadine is My Boyfriend’. This play was subsequently produced by the company enjoying a sell-out run in Dublin before touring internationally to Bucharest, Edinburgh and Australia, and – as a radio play – becoming RTE’s most downloaded podcast. Stefanie has gone on to write for RTE, with the successful series ‘Can’t Cope, Won’t Cope’ now in its second season and is also writing for Channel 4 in the UK and First Look Media in the US. Last year, I hosted Stefanie in the renamed ‘Department of Theatre’ to talk with students ...

Abstract:
Introduction Schizotypy is associated with increased vulnerability to schizophrenia spectrum disorders. Therefore, investigation of its brain correlates seems prominent for better understanding of schizophrenia-spectrum continuum as well as for development of biological treatments for schizotypal personality disorder. Functional alterations of prefrontal cortex (PFC) and their associations with clinical symptoms are well-known to exist in schizophrenia. However, their relevance to schizotypy remains unclear. Objectives The aim of the study was to check for associations between schizotypal traits in a non-clinical sample and whole-brain functional connectivity (FC) of lateral as well as medial PFC (lPFC and mPFC, respectively). Methods Eighty-two healthy individuals (52 females, mean age 24.8±5.48) filled out the Schizotypal Personality Questionnaire (SPQ-74) and underwent resting-state fMRI (3T). Seeds in lPFC and mPFC were taken from frontoparietal and default mode networks (atlas by Yeo et al., 2011). We analyzed correlations between four schizotypal factors (cognitive/perceptual, paranoid, negative, and disorganization; Stefanis et al., 2004) and whole-brain FC of the seeds (statistical threshold: p<.001 voxelwise; p[FDR]<.05 clusterwise). Results Cognitive/perceptual factor (‘Odd beliefs/magical thinking’ and ‘Unusual perceptual experiences’ SPQ-74 subscales) is negatively correlated to FC of bilateral mPFC with a cluster in the right cerebellum (Crus 1, 2). Conclusions Prefrontal-cerebellar dysconnectivity may be one of the neurobiological factors underlying positive-symptoms-like schizotypal traits in non-clinical subjects. To some extent, it coincides with the data on associations between functional features of these brain structures and positive symptoms in schizophrenia (Pinheiro et al., 2021; Goghari et al., 2010). Abstract:
Abstract Channeling Gertrude Stein’s assertion from her lecture “Portraits and Repetition” that there is no such thing as repetition because both language and other entities that compose the world are continuously undergoing change, this essay explores the question of iteration or recursion in two recent critical books, Brian Kim Stefans’s Word Toys: Poetry and Technics (2017) and Jacob Edmond’s Make it the Same: Poetry in the Age of Global Media (2019). Stefans develops a critical practice that considers poems to be autonomous, dynamic entities, akin to machines or living organisms, thus connecting to longstanding traditions in twentieth-century poetry, which have imagined words as objects that populate the open field of the poem. However, much as Stein suggests, such linguistic objects are not self-same or stable. This opens the question of the role of iteration with a difference in the constitution of such entities, and in the context of Edmond’s book Make It the Same this question is extended to poetic techniques, such as copying, in their variously mediated forms, ranging from the use of a tape recorder to digital media.[L]iving entities, which for Stein as for Stefans, can be defined as forms of subjectivity—as poems, roses or frogs—are not self-same and are, instead, iteratively created in each recursion or repetition.

Abstract:
W obszernym i różnorodnym dorobku Stefanii Zahorskiej (1889–1961) obejmującym m.in. publikacje z zakresu historii i teorii sztuki, filozofii, psychologii, historii kultury, istotne miejsce zajmuje refleksja teoretyczno- i krytycznofilmowa. W Polsce to ważny i prekursorski głos w sposobie widzenia głębszych relacji pomiędzy filmem a literaturą.

Abstract:
Stefania (in the US: Stephanie Louise) Kwolek is an American chemist of Polish descent. Globally, she is primarily known as a co-inventor of kevlar, material used to manufacture, among other things, bulletproof vests. Numerous works dedicated to the life and achievements of the famous researcher point to doubts with regard to the spelling of her maiden name. According to certain publications, the name Kwolek is either an Americanised or a distorted Polish name Chwałek. The author of this article shows that both surnames have the same origin – Chwałek is a standard, literary form, and Kwolek is a dialectical form, compliant with the pronunciation in the dialects of south-eastern Poland. The form Kwolek started being used by the society in distant past, still before the official codification of surnames on the Polish territory. That was the name used by Stefania’s father at the time he emigrated to America, therefore, there is no reason to refer to him by the name Chwałek, even if the name Kwolek may seem less prestigious.

Abstract:
All of the most well-known numerical methods for solving the Stefan’s problem, as well as a new method developed by the author are considered for the purpose of choosing the most efficient of them from a perspective of accuracy and computational speed. A comparison is carried out on the results of solving the problem for the boundary motion of “ice-water” phase transition around the vertical well passing through the thickness of permafrost. The conclusions, which are distributed to other multidimensional and multi-front statements of the Stefan’s problem, are made. The mathematical model, the brief description of the considered numerical methods and the boundaries of their applicability are presented. The comparison shows the advantages and disadvantages of different methods. It is demonstrated that the use of the explicit scheme leads to a marked increase in computation time, the six-point symmetric scheme may have oscillating solution; therefore, the implicit scheme is the most preferred. It is concluded that the most efficient method for one-dimensional and one front Stefan’s problems is the method of catching the front in the grid node using the implicit scheme, and the most efficient method for multi-dimensional and multi-front Stefan’s problems is the enthalpy method using the implicit scheme, which has been developed by the author.

Abstract:
In this article, Asgedet Stefanos examines women and education in the east African nation of Eritrea. She tackles as her central questions whether, and to what extent, Eritrean women have been achieving emancipation; and, if so, what role education has played in that process. Stefanos begins by providing a historical overview that delineates Eritrean women's general social condition and access to education in pre-colonial traditional society and during the eras of Italian and British colonialism. She then evaluates developments during Eritrea's protracted national liberation struggle against Ethiopia and the four years since independence. Stefanos documents significant advances in the emancipation of women and highlights education as a vital arena for change. She observes shortcomings in the Eritrean political leadership's strategy to establish effective educational equity for women, as well as disparities between the goals and assessments of policymakers and the aspirations and experiences of women. Her discussion of contemporary Eritrea is informed by policies and commentary of political leaders and interviews with a diverse sample of Eritrean women. Stefanos concludes by asserting that the current situation confronting an independent Eritrea promotes new obstacles and challenges to a vigorous pursuit of female rights and gender equality, and that the prospects for expanding women's gains in education are very much in the balance.
