Abstract:
Throughout the years, there has been a rise in the number of travel vlogs. Travel Vlogs have become an essential route for travelers to get tourism information, which influences the viewers' travel intentions. The quantitative study generally examines the significant relationship of local YouTube travel vlogs and revisiting intention preferences of tourism students of De La Salle University-Dasmariñas. The study was emerged because of the previous studies which addressed the relationship between travel vlogs and tourists’ travel intention. With the adapted attributes and characteristics, the results of this study could serve as a basis for the essence of watching travel vlogs in connection with the revisit intention of the students. The data was gathered using an online questionnaire constructed in Microsoft Forms. Two (2) tourism professors and a statistician from De La Salle University-Dasmariñas validated the questionnaire. The results were analyzed using weighted mean and Spearman’s Rho. Furthermore, the overall findings of the study revealed a strong correlation of the variables. Finally, the research concluded that there is a significant relationship between local YouTube travel vlogs and revisiting intention preferences of tourism students of De La Salle University-Dasmariñas.

Abstract:
Article analyzed the needs of communicative competence and gather information on the features of communicative competence that are believed to be important by selected foreign graduate students studying at DLSU. The features consist of linguistic, sociolinguistic, discourse, strategic, and intercultural competences. Data were obtained by giving questionnaire to 33 foreign students, consisting of 11 male and 22 females and were analyzed qualitatively. The findings suggest that all features of communicative competence are crucial. In addition, the linguistic competence and strategic competence are considered to be the most essential features of the communicative competence. It can be concluded that the foreign graduate students learn English to achieve their communicative competence and it is used to communicate among students.

Abstract:
Purpose – In introducing e-reserves as an added service of the De La Salle University (DLSU) libraries, the purpose of this paper is to identify the best practices of handling e-reserves and its legal implications as one of the factors that might affect the introduction, development and implementation of such service. Design/methodology/approach – Four universities were considered based from the 2013 Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) university rankings in Asia. Only one academic library was maintaining an e-reserve system. It was consulted to know more about their e-reserve practices. Findings – The paper recommends to prepare the relevant e-reserve guidelines before it fully operates. Moreover, the Libraries should also collaborate with the office handling learning management systems so as to decide on how to manage the e-reserves. A needs assessment survey for faculty members is also being prepared so as to solicit responses from the teaching faculty if e-reserves is possible for DLSU to be established. Originality/value – The paper attempts to document the existing e-reserve system in Philippine academic libraries.

Abstract:
This thesis undertakes a reformulation of ELT curricula by means of a critique of established theoretical models and a case study of the ELT curriculum at De La Salle University (DLSU), Manila. The thesis proceeds in accordance with the precise that a sound theoretical and philosophical perspective is crucial to any task of curriculum development and criticism and thus derives a theoretical/ philosophical perspective from a consideration of ELT in the context of the philosophy of education and linguistic, applied linguistic, sociolinguistic, learning and curriculum theories. The argument is presented that any model of language as communication derived from linguistics and applied linguistics is not amenable to translation into descriptive rules of 'use' and hence a pedagogic grammar. Such theoretical perspectives, in only deriving partial models of 'use', are largely inadequate in the context of a concern with language teaching. Input from cognitive learning theory however suggests that teaching language as communication requires a curriculum approach focusing on 'open' communicative procedures rather than systematic techniques premised on language description and exemplified by a syllabus-based structure. It is thus argued that communicative language teaching requires 'open', methodology-based procedures that provide a markedly subordinated role for syllabus. The advocated form of communicative language curriculum is thus described as employing an 'open' rather than a 'closed-system') approach. It is also maintained that the ELT debate on communicative curricula has largely ignored crucial issues in curriculum theory and the philosophy of education - especially the distinction between 'education' and 'training'. This theoretical debate enables the derivation of a revised taxonomy of language curricula to replace the orthodox dichotomy into General English and ESP. The argument is presented that there are essentially two approaches to the curriculum - closed-system and open approaches - and that within each approach there are two curriculum types. Through revised definitions, the intents of 6E and ESP curricula are distinguished and a new taxonomy of four possible curriculum types, including that of a Focused English Learning (FED curriculum, presented. The principles derived from the theoretical discussion and reformulated taxonomy enable an 'illuminative' case study investigation of an example curriculum: the ostensibly English for Specific Purposes (ESP) curriculum for Engineers employed at DLSU. This case study, by examining curriculum justification and intent and illuminating the nature of the problem at the university, illustrates, by example, aspects of the reformulated taxonomy. The case study findings detail crucial aspects of the interface between theory and local practice and expose the curriculum at DLSU as inherently contradictory, based on an inaccurate notion of ESP, and principally concerned with the pursuit of broadly educational aims through a mainly training-based, closed-system and non-communicative curriculum. The thesis concludes by proposing that the orthodox dichotomy between GE and ESP curricula is inappropriate and fails to reflect the various and possible forms of curricular intent. This has been a consequence of a theoretical emphasis on linguistics and sociolinguistics and an inadequate consideration of the philosophy of education and learning and curriculum theories. The inadequacy of the established dichotomy has led to confusion in application (as demonstrated through the case study) that could be avoided through the adoption of the reformulated taxonomy.

"An exploratory study of student and instructor characteristics to determine the extent to which self-directed learning can be introduced in the undergraduate curriculum in the Philippines." University of Canberra. Professional and Community Education, 1998. http://erl.canberra.edu.au./public/adt-AUC20050418.100706.

Abstract:
This research was in the area of self-directed learning, largely resulting from the researcher's experience with it whilst in Australia. However, the intent of this study was to consider factors which would affect the implementation of self-directed learning principles into the Philippine context. Education in the Philippines can be described as primarily engaged in the transmission of knowledge. The structure and culture of education in the Philippines is one that largely supports a teacher-directed learning environment. Students are conditioned to be dependent on teachers and are used to studying with the security of a clear structural plan with very limited opportunities to apply self-directed learning principles. This approach to education produces static knowledge and denies the expression and cultivation of the learner. Hence, there is a need to promote self-directed learning as part of the curriculum. In attempting to introduce self-directed learning (SDL) in the Philippines, it is important to analyse student and instructor characteristics which could influence the extent to which it is applied in the undergraduate university curriculum. This research project gathers in-depth information on the conduciveness of integrating self-directed learning in the undergraduate curriculum of De La Salle University (DLSU) in the Philippines. This exploratory study aimed to respond to the statement "What is the level of readiness for self-directed learning of undergraduate students from De La Salle University? What are the student's perceptions of education, their role in the educational process, the role of peers and the role of their instructors? What is the instructor's education orientation? What are the perception of instructors on the purpose of education, the nature of learners, characteristics of learning experiences, management of learning experiences, evaluation and the relationship between the educators and learners and between learners themselves? Are these perceptions similar and would it be possible to introduce self-directed learning principles to an undergraduate curriculum for traditional students in De La Salle University?" The response to these questions could be used in determining whether self-directed learning principles could in fact be applied in the Philippines, as well as determine the appropriate balance of pedagogical and andragogical instruction techniques. Twenty-three instructors and one hundred students from De La Salle University in the Philippines participated in the study. Instructors completed the Educational Orientation Questionnaire and students completed the Self-Directed Learning Readiness Survey. Follow up intewiews were also conducted to confirm findings resulting from the survey. Findings indicate that instructors have an orientation that is a combination of both pedagogical and andragogical techniques and that students perceive themselves as having self-directed learning readiness. As a number of learning situations already utilise andragogical and self-directed learning principles, the challenge is to promote and encourage SDL and implement it on a wider scope. Some recommendations have been included in this research on how to implement it in De La Salle University.

Abstract:
The history of the seventh art has steadfastly developed throughout the last century. The multiplication of means of broadcasting pictures can be called a landmark in so far as it involves increasing demand and a more individual viewing of films. The movie theatre however remains a major mode of exploitation in spite of the three following phenomena : weaker attendance, more specific attendance and increasing american influence. Such parameters demand adaptation of the legal system to the economic data of the film market. This arrangement is twofold : the first aspect is inherent in the acknowledgement of the part played by the different partners while they purchase and hand over the right of exploitation. The second one to be taken into account lies in who the film is aimed at with a view to winning over new spectators within the nation and increasing the market

Portela, Sotelo Miguel Alfredo. Thesis, Lyon 1, 2011. http://www.theses.fr/2011LYO10260.

Full text
Abstract:
The various professionals (oncologists, medical physicists, radiation therapist, etc.) involved in the treatment of cancer by radiation therapy express more and more acutely a real need to have a global view of the treatment system in order to monitor the patient and all the equipment in the room — be it mobile (or even robotized) or not — to improve patient safety. This global view would help reduce the number of human interventions, errors in physical interaction (involuntary movements, collisions, etc.), and errors in the global configuration for the patient. To answer this need, this PhD manuscript presents a videosurveillance module using a numerical model of the elements in the scene (patient, couch, irradiation arm, etc.) to monitor the movement of these elements in order to avoid any event that could put the patient, staff or equipment in danger. Monitoring the treatment room means checking, at any moment, that its current configuration is consistent with what was planned upstream (in the Treatment Planning System [TPS]) and with the standards of radiotherapy, and if need be to, to inform the medical staff, so that correcting actions may be undertaken. We have developed a generic model which allows the creation of numerical models from the data contained in the patient record (in the TPS), enriched with other visual, geometric and “semantic” information. All the numerical models used to create a virtual environment correspond to the scene as seen by video cameras. Location and orientation of the elements are calculated by 3D registration, a choice justified by the characteristics of radiation treatment rooms (controlled environment, low dynamics, highly constrained construction specifications, very similar treatment rooms, etc.). The (geometric, physical and mechanical) information items in the model allow to reduce the overall complexity of the algorithms. The method for motion tracking we have implemented exploits the characteristics and constraints of the elements included in the numerical model, specifically the “descriptors” which correspond to the 3D modeling of primitives used to track the element in the video stream. We also present a dissimilarity function that we have defined, resulting from the merging of two well-known dissimilarity functions, respectively based on the chamfer distance and the notion of non-overlap. A fuzzy formalism improves the robustness of the method against the noise generated by acquisition and processing. When the treatment session takes place, the module evaluates the current configuration (positions acquired for elements, using the tracking module and global parameters of the scene), to interact with medical staff in relation to what has been defined in pretreatment. We present results of tests performed in a radiotherapy room but in the absence of irradiation and patient (the patient was either replaced by a phantom positioned on the couch or by one researcher playing his/her role). These results demonstrate the feasibility and efficiency of the surveillance module

Abstract:
Space constraints often present the greatest challenge in determining the lay-out of specific radiotherapy installations. To fulfill these constraints high density concrete is often employed in construction. We have undertaken a study to establish the transmission of primary, leakage and scatter radiation through a particular type of high density concrete. In the course of this study various characteristics of leakage and scatter radiation from a 10 MV linac have also been investigated. The results of these studies are reported in this thesis.
To establish the correct chamber configuration required for the characterization of the transmission factors for primary, leakage and scatter radiation and to determine the scatter-to-incidence dose ratio a, we have measured the build-up curves and verified the validity of the inverse square law for these different radiations. The build-up data for the radiation scattered from a humanoid phantom at different angles from the primary axis have shown that even at low scatter angles little to no build-up is required for scatter radiation measurements.

Abstract:
We are studying wireless OFDM communications using a 60 GHz carrier, for multimedia application in relatively large rooms. This environment may require that relays are used to repeat signals in order to realise the communications. The line of sight communication may be not possible because of walking people. The walls of the room are considered as reflecting incoming waves, without diffraction. To resolve the possibility of line of sight message being lost, messages are repeated, either by the relays or by the source. In the first part of the document, the advantage that these repetitions may bring to the error correction will be studied. It will be demonstrated that when the receiver collects several repetitions, the capacity is raising. In a second part, we will study if the repetitions can be simply the multiple trajectories of waves due to the rebound on walls. A technique to control the multiple trajectories can be devised, but today there is a limit since it may affect the analogue to digital conversion. Finally, we will discuss antennas capable of driving these controlled multiple trajectories and relays simultaneously. Surprisingly, we will see that beam forming antennas are not necessarily better candidates than sector antennas. A sector antenna capable of working in our environment will be defined

Abou-Sido, Marah, Marwa Hamed, Suad Hussen, Monica Zolezzi, and Sowndramalingam Sankaralingam. "Are Blood Pressure Devices Available in Qatar Community Pharmacies Validated For Accuracy?" In Qatar University Annual Research Forum & Exhibition. Qatar University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.29117/quarfe.2021.0119.

Full text
Abstract:
Research purpose: Hypertension is a leading cause of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in Qatar. Community pharmacist-managed home blood pressure monitoring (HBPM) services have been shown to provide better control of hypertension. Digital BP devices available and sold in community pharmacies are commonly used for HBPM services. Devices validated for accuracy are important for clinical decision-making. Non-validated devices are more likely to be inaccurate and could potentially lead to poor BP control and health risks. The objectives of our study are 1) to identify the proportion of validated BP devices available in community pharmacies in Qatar and 2) to determine the relationship between the validation status of devices and cuff location and price. Methodology: We visited 28 community pharmacies including the 2 major pharmacy chains in Qatar. The following data were collected about BP devices: brand/model, validation status, cuff location, and price. Findings: A total of 87 distinct models of BP devices from 19 different brands are available in Qatar community pharmacies. The three most commonly available brands are Beurer®, Omron®, and Rossmax®. Most models available are upper arm devices (75%) while the rest are wrist devices (25%). Among all models, only 57.5% are validated. Sixty percent of upper-arm devices and 50% of wrist devices are validated. Importantly, 60% of lower-priced (≤ QAR 250) devices are not validated while 83% of higher-priced (QAR 500-750) devices are validated. Research originality/value: This is a novel study that has investigated the validation status of BP devices available in community pharmacies for the first time. This information will serve both pharmacists and the public alike. In Qatar and elsewhere, there are no regulations on the accuracy of devices sold in community pharmacies. Therefore, regulations on the sale of BP devices should be implemented in the best interest of patient safety.

Abstract:
In 2019, MIT Press and University of Michigan Press launched their own ebook collections for direct sale to libraries. Nearly a year has gone by. In that year, three basic truths have emerged and continue to guide them on this journey: 1. Establish Principles - Our principles must be our central reference point. We must innovate by taking a “values-based” approach not just a solely “value-based” selection process. 2. Embrace Exploration, Agility and Humility - We are perpetual searchers and seekers, always novices and beginners. Transformation comes from discovering the right questions more than having the right answers. 2. Take Action - We cannot think ourselves into new ways of acting, rather we act ourselves into a new way of thinking. Impactful change will only happen when we take risks, focus on people, and shift from monologue to dialogue when engaging with the communities we serve. How did they come to these truths? What are the prospects for each of their individual endeavors? Why should libraries care? In this paper, representatives of the two presses will tell their respective stories about this last year’s adventures. We they share why they chose to work directly with libraries, what they expected after launching their new collections, as well as divulge what reality actually dealt them.

Garnsey, Elizabeth, Paul P. Hwang, and Erik Stam. "The growth and exit of university and corporate spinouts in the medical instrumentation industry." In 16th Annual High Technology Small Firms Conference, HTSF 2008. University of Twente, 2008. http://dx.doi.org/10.3990/2.268578021.

Full text
Abstract:
Incubator organizations are said to exert a long term influence on their spin-outs. However, there is a great diversity in the types of spin-outs (Druilhe and Garnsey, 2004) and in types of incubators (Clarysse, Wright et al., 2005). This diversity is likely to affect the influence of the incubator on the performance of the spin-out. To contrast the impact on (similar) spin out firms of their very different originating organizations we compare two instrumentation spin-outs, one from Cambridge University and one from a technology consultancy firm in the same region. We go on to examine the evolution of the business models of these spinouts, their growth experience and exit routes of founders and investors. The central question is how the incubator organization affects the development path taken in the early life course of their spin-outs. We find that although university or corporate origin exerts path dependent influence on the early development of these firms, the problems they face in scaling up are similar and largely unrelated to their origins. Critical problems arose from the shift in target market from technophile and early adopters to more mainstream customers as they moved from customized to standardized products, characterised by very different purchasing decisions of customers. Likewise the contrasting exit routes of founders and investors (trade sale and IPO) related to factors independent of the originating organization. We conclude that the business development of spin-outs can only be partly understood through a focus on their incubator organizations; their products and markets are of much greater impact on their development. However we found a shared set of influences on business model evolution, relationship with customers and exit pressures on the spin out companies, in that these were all shaped by knowledge networks and brokers of various kinds as the spinouts moved out of the orbit of their originators to create a network of new relationships on which their performance depended. The incubator organization undoubtedly exerts an influence. However, this influence is indirect, in shaping the networks that the founders have built up or have access to via the incubator organization. Over time the spin-out co-evolves with an expanding network of relationships. Especially in a knowledge-rich environment such as that surrounding Cambridge, the initial disadvantage of university spin-outs (due to less industry experience and networks) in comparison to corporate spinouts is less of a constraint. This shows that the direct influence of the incubator organization is relatively small, but that the networks that are developed from, and extended beyond those formed in the incubator organization are key enabling factors in the growth of these spin-outs.

Abstract:
In a dynamic and globalized business world such as the current one in which our professional and personal life is developed, it is crucial to focus on the development of the cross-cutting competence "Innovation, Creativity and Entrepreneurship" of future professionals, already from their formative stage in University. Taking advantage of the intrinsic creativity of the early age of students with concerns about entrepreneurship, we consider it appropriate to help develop and enhance this competence in the first university course of the Degree in Business Administration and Management, specifically in the subject of Introduction to the Business Management. We think it is the best way to motivate students in their training as future entrepreneurs. We propose to do a practical session in which a recognized professional in the field of commercial management, representing business lines of leading brands in their sector (home fashion), conduct a practical workshop in which students are placed in situation of knowing how to face a new business model to diversify and expand its distribution field. The object of study and work would be limited in this case to the creation of an own line of articles, complementary to the lines of which the professional is a representative, and to arrange with the online sales logistics platform the sale and distribution of the new product line. With this we hope that the students can, in an active way, experiment and develop their innovative and entrepreneurial capacity, using and reinforcing their creativity.

Abstract:
In the paper, we establish an investigation on the development of university 3D-model and its possible applications for educational and research fields. We assume that 3D-model of university can help in various scenarios and should be used to adopt modern immersing technologies into to university processes. Different means are employed for the development of the model. Bottom-up approach for using these means and their connection with each other are shown in the work. Then, details of the 3D-model design process are provided with peculiarities related to the university building location and corpuses positions. Finally, assembled models of university are shown in 3ds Max and Unity environments. In the final part of the paper, we suggest scenarios of model usage for educational and research fields. Universities can gain various benefits from integrating their research efforts to employ new technology and identify new development opportunities for both science and education in university. In case of the developed 3D-model, it is planned to use it in the projects connected with client-server applications, Internet-of-Things, Smart Grid, etc. In the educational process it will be a part of case-studies for learning 3D-modeling, development in Unity environment, training for emergency situations.
