Abstract:

Abstract:
This article reconstructs Raffaele Viviani’s ties with some of the greatest representatives of 19th and 20th century Italian theater, dwelling in particular on his relationships with Scarpetta, Pirandello, and Eduardo and Peppino De Filippo. The tools for such an investigation are letters and theatrical reviews. In order to highlight Viviani’s relationship with the theatrical scene of his time and with the preceding dramaturgical tradition, the article illustrates Viviani’s close relationship with Luigi Pirandello. In the space of a 20-year period, Viviani performed and transposed into the Neapolitan dialect three of Pirandello’s plays: La patente (1924), Pensaci, Giacomino! (1933), and Bellavita (1943). The analysis of this relationship dwells not only on the novel and effective linguistic operation carried out by Viviani compared with the original texts (in the case of transpositions/rewritings), but also draws attention to the system of characters in Viviani’s theater that have a Pirandellian origin, such as Don Mario Augurio (from the play by the same name) and Giovanni Scardino ( Fuori l’autore). Moreover, the article examines Viviani’s interest in Eduardo Scarpetta; in 1940, Viviani staged Scarpetta’s indisputable masterpiece, Miseria e nobiltà. Finally, the article considers Viviani’s relationship with Eduardo and Peppino De Filippo. The unusual relationship Viviani had with Eduardo De Filippo, a kind of ‘relationship/non-relationship’ that had its basis in the different poetic choices of the two men, is analysed.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
This essay suggests that the ultraminor can function as a paradigm to examine literature that emphasizes the minority status of the language in which it is composed. Engaging with Deleuze and Guattari’s definition of minor literature and with Pascale Casanova and Lawrence Venuti’s reflections on the role of translation in the shaping of world literature, it develops a comparison between two rewritings of Shakespeare into Italian dialects: Eduardo De Filippo’s translation of The Tempest into Neapolitan and Luigi Meneghello’s translation of Hamlet into vicentino. The essay underlines how these endeavors represent translations into languages that, at the time of writing, are considered by their authors in decline and doomed to extinction, and argues that both authors use translation to emphasize the historical memory of their native idioms. Both De Filippo and Meneghello, in fact, set out to challenge the subordinate status of Neapolitan and vicentino by proving that dialects are apt to express great thought as well as philosophical, abstract, and theoretical concepts.

Since the 1990s, the Museo Regionale di Scienze Naturali di Torino houses the ornithological collection formerly belonging to the Zoological Museum of the University of Turin (MZUT). This collection includes about 20,500 specimens, mostly dating from the second half of the nineteenth century or early twentieth. The high number of type-specimens gives it great historical and scientific significance. The types have been described mainly by Tommaso Salvadori (171 taxa, 282 specimens) and, to a lesser extent, by other Italian authors such as Enrico Festa, Filippo de Filippi, Orazio Antinori, Enrico H. Giglioli or by foreign authors as John Gould, Eduard Rüppell, Coenraad Jacob Temminck, Philip L. Sclater, Robert Swinhoe.

Abstract:

Abstract:
With productions of nine of his plays behind him (including his translation of Eduardo de Filippo's Filumena for the Stratford Festival in 1997), playwright and actor Vittorio Rossi has become one of Canada's best-known dramatists of Italian origin. He began his writing career by winning the Best New Play Award at the Quebec Drama Festival twice: for "Little Blood Brother" in 1986 and for "Backstreets" in 1987. His first full-length play, The Chain, broke attendance records at Centaur Theatre, English Quebec's main stage. His most acclaimed drama, The Last Adam, won the Canadian Authors Association Literary Award for Drama in 1996. Rossi's career as an actor, in addition to his work in his own plays, has included roles in such films as Snake Eater II: The Drug Buster (1991), Canvas: The Fine Art of Crime (1992), Le Sphinx (1995), Strip Search (1997), Suspicious Minds (1997), and the award-winning Post Mortem (1999); and televison series such as Malarek (1989), Urban Angel (1991), Bonanno: A Godfather's Story (1999) and the number-one-rated television show in Quebec for its three-year run, Omerta (1996, 1997, 1998). I met with Rossi at the Café Via Crescent on Crescent Street in Montreal, December 8, 1999. We discussed the situation of actors in Canada, the process of translation and adaptation, the background of the plays and his reaction to their critical reception, and his work in progress: the film adaptation of a crime novel for Denys Arcand, the scripting of a television series with Luc Dionne (creator of Omerta) and the film adaptation and production of Rossi's own shoe-store drama Scarpone.

Abstract:
Background:Ixekizumab (IXE), an IL-17A antagonist, is effective in patients with radiographic axial spondyloarthritis (rad-axSpA). Assessment in SpondyloArthritis International Society (ASAS) 40 response – the primary study endpoint – was achieved at week (wk) 16 by 48% of those treated with 80mg subcutaneous IXE every 4 wks (Q4W) in the phase 3 COAST V trial (NCT 02696785) 1. Until now, no information has been available on the efficacy of IXE on the components of ASAS40 composite endpoint. Objectives:To describe which individual components of ASAS40 drive achievement of efficacy response. Methods:This exploratory post-hoc analysis was based on COAST V data. Patients enrolled in COAST V met ASAS criteria for rad-axSpA and were biological disease-modifying antirheumatic drug (bDMARD)-naïve. Patients were assigned 1:1:1:1 to subcutaneous placebo (PBO), IXE Q4W, IXE Q2W or 40 mg adalimumab (ADA). Only data for approved doses are shown. To reach ASAS40 response, patients must have an improvement of at least 40% and at least 2 units for at least 3 of 4 individual components which define response (patient global assessment of disease activity, spinal pain, inflammation (defined as the mean of Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Index (BASDAI) questions 5 and 6), and function (Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Functional Index - BASFI)), without worsening in the remaining component. We describe the percentage of patients who achieved this change, had an insufficient response, or deteriorated in each component out to wk 16 for IXE Q4W, ADA and PBO. The time course of the change from baseline in individual components of the ASAS response is depicted descriptively per treatment arm by use of the mean and standard deviation. Observed data have been utilised. Results:IXE Q4W response at 16 wks was driven by all 4 individual components of the ASAS40 with the largest improvements for patients treated with IXE Q4W seen in inflammation and spinal pain (Figure 1).At wk 16, at least 50% of all patients treated with IXE Q4W achieved response on spinal pain (60.3%), inflammation (60.3%) and patient global assessment (50%), with 43.6% of patients meeting the response criteria for function (Table 1). The corresponding results for ADA were 43.2%, 47.7% 39.8%, and 35.2%.Conclusion:Our findings show that meeting ASAS40 response criterion for an individual component at 16 wks by patients treated with IXE Q4W was broadly similar between individual components. However, a clinically relevant improvement was more frequently observed for the spinal pain and inflammation components.References:[1]Dougados, M., et al. (2020). This article aims to highlight the real potential of the Neapolitan language in literature and, in particular, in theatre, its expressive power, its communicative capacity, especially in the transmission of feelings and emotions. I have tried to examine the modern Neapolitan language by examining the various passages through the centuries and the contaminations due to the various foreign dominations, which have obviously left their mark, including merits and defects.

Abstract:
From 1925-1929, the popular social movement of "Emperor" Flor Intrencherado in Western Visayas gained notoriety within the press local. The Iloilo-based local newspaper, the Makinaugalingon, extensively covered the movement in their press release articles. The newspaper, unsurprisingly, recreated a picture of Intrencherado and his followers in a language of ridicule, dismissing the movement and identifying its leader as a lunatic and insane despite the locality of the press. This, in turn, marginalized the movement, its goals, and objectives, as well as the leader, "Emperor" Flor Intrencherado. The goal of this study is to present, review, and analyze the different representations the local press created with the “infamous” peasant movement and give the context in which similar social movements could be understood. Abstract:
Epistemological frames and theoretical underpinnings are developed precisely to give coherence and cognitive rendering to a rather chaotic appearance of the world and reality to man’s consciousness. These frames offer associations of nuances and concepts that in turn provide cogent systems of understanding, which contribute to man’s unending search for meanings combining as it were his experience of the world and his ability to mentally grasp such experience hence, the Ancient Greek word episteme. In the social sciences, theoretical frameworks are formulated to provide grounding venues for construing the complexities and specificities of social phenomena toward a better understanding of the social world. Concomitantly, these frameworks are assessed and evaluated based on their capacity to utter notions and tell stories of the slice of reality they wish to depict. It is in this respect that this paper offers a critical examination of the most prevalent theoretical frames and epistemic perspectives, herein referred to as classics, deployed in understanding Philippine political local dynamics. In light of Philippine contemporary economic, social, cultural, and political developments, the article identifies some gaps and bumps in these ‘classics’ to offer a research trajectory that scholars in the field can rightly consider. Through a synthesis of existing political paradigms applied in local politics, the paper highlighted nuances that are ignored, realities that are not yet explored, and concepts rendered with over-simplistic meanings, suggesting imperatives for modifications, deconstructions, and even reconstructions.
