Abstract:
The relationship between physical activity, sports and headache is a topic of growing interest as testified by a variety of recently published papers. This correlation dates back to the Classical Age. The aim of this study is to understand how the concept of headache of vascular origin has evolved after the publication of the book De motu cordis by William Harvey (1578–1657). We analyzed and compared the books De arte gymnastica written by Girolamo Mercuriale (1601 edition) and De Morbis Artificum Diatriba written by Bernardino Ramazzini (1713 edition) focusing our attention on headache in the sportsman. By studying the De morbis artificum diatriba, it is clear that its description of the etiopathogenesis of exercise headache of cardiovascular origin is much more complete and precise than the one provided in De arte gymnastica. The limits of scientific knowledge of his time put Mercuriale at disadvantage, since cardiovascular physiology was not elucidated until 1628 with the publication of De motu cordis.

Abstract:
There is nothing inherently new, of course, about the study of men in archaeology. For example, in his important history of the creation of modern European masculinity George Mosse (The Image of Man, Oxford, 1996) describes one objective of eighteenth-century archaeologists as entailing the rediscovery of ancient Greek sculpture. Among other things Mosse demonstrates how an ‘ideal of masculine beauty took its inspiration from Greece’ and from the Greek statues in which the male body is deified, to such an extent that ‘the noble soul of each youth manifests itself through the harmonious position of his naked body during gymnastic exercises, foreshadowing the important role that gymnastics will play in shaping modern manhood’.

ABSTRACTThe following work is entitled: Lighting and spatiality in Adolphe Appia. It aims to make a historical and bibliographical approach about the contributions of his work to the transformation of theatrical scenic scene. For that reason, the analyses here were done from a scenic makeover that has as forming elements the lighting and spatiality scenic. These contributions were inspired by Wagnerian`s drama staging and Rhythmic Gymnastics. However, this research is a brief historical exhibition on the life and theoretical practices of Richard Wagner and JaquesDalcroze, once these two characters are crucial to the theoretical work of Appia. Therefore, after discussing the relevant correlations between the authors approaches I discuss the theoretical suggestions of Adolphe Appia about reshaping theatrical scenic space, exposing the elements of its proposal by analyzing his work: The Work of Living Art; brought to the theater scene in the early twentieth century. Keywords: Appia, Lighting, Spaciality, Rhythmic Gymnastics, Total Art Work.

Abstract:
At the beginning of the nineteenth century, when Napoleon's French empire conquered much of Europe, the German patriot Friedrich Ludwig Jahn invented the first German national gymnastics program known asTurnen. The idea was to create a new German body and a new form of national discipline. Walking for bodily fitness, to instill national awareness, training on special equipment and rediscovering ancient German dance forms all became part of the new body culture. It is out of this movement with its nationalist and later racist culture that much of the modern gymnastics and dance movements in Germany gained their ideologies. This article sketches some stages of this social and physical continuity, from the resistance to the French to the establishment of the racial state in 1933 and to the provision of a Nazi aesthetic by German modern dancers.

Abstract:

Past training as an athlete has driven me to reach for the unattainable goal of flawlessness. This mentality, which I apply to jewelry making, has led me to recreate the intricate angles of the athletic body and the beauty of its movements. I use gymnastics imagery within my work as a tool to communicate how we learn and understand through practice and repetition. With shifted lines, skewed shapes and geometric wirework, the jewelry tumbles over the architecture of the wearer’s body. The repetitive metal forms come together to simulate movement and enhance the physical language that a body in motion can suggests.

Abstract: This work presents the concepts and practices of Eurhythmics (Rythmique) as conceived by the Swiss composer Émile Jaques-Dalcroze (1865-1950). It discusses the relation of Eurhythmics with modern dance and gymnastics in Europe and in the U.S. It also stablishes a comparison between the poetic experience of Eurhythmics and the German employ of rhythm and expression gymnastics in the european totalitarism. This thesis is composed by 9 PICTURES which describe Dalcroze's exploration of the universe of dramatic arts (music, dance and theather) and gymnastics. These pictures are unfinished, and for this reason they may offer their potency to inspire future researches on the theme body-rhythmmovement- expression. The 9 pictures are preceded by a PROLOGUE and present the following approaches: 1. A biographical essay about Émile Jaques-Dalcroze; 2. A synthesis about Dalcroze's system of musical education named Eurhythmics; 3. The influences of the theories of expression by François Delsarte (1811-1871) on the creation of Eurhythmics; 4. The friendship with the cenographer Adolphe Appia (1862-1928) and the relation between Eurhythmics and the Appia's concept of "living work of art"; 5. The experience of the 1st Dalcroze's Eurhythmics Institute created at the garden-city of Hellerau (Germany); 6. The interruption of Hellerau's school activities caused by the begining of the World War I; 7. The relation between Dalcroze's Eurhythmics and the conception of Modern Dance in Eupore and in the U.S.; 8. The relation between Eurhythmics and the germany gymnastics - a special approach with the Expression-gymnastics created by Dalcroze's pupil Rudolf Bode (1881-1971); 9. The permanence of Eurhythmics at french contemporary dance with Françoise Dupuy. Annexed there is a video named "Émile Jaques-Dalcroze: Memory into Music", where it's possible to hear Dalcroze's own compositions and see some images about his personal life and work.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to, based on interviews and document studies, critically discuss how the introduction of kickboxing in Physical Education (PE) could affect gender equality in society. Based on a queer feminist and norm critical perspective on the prevailing teaching of PE, which, despite official efforts to challenge and modernize PE, persists in reproducing gender norms by e.g. spending 75% of class time on ball games. The hypothesis is that girls accessing violence (empowerment) through a bodily awareness in the form of kickboxing, positively would challenge the power imbalance that gender norms create. Girls are brought up, even today, in accordance with gender norms arguing against girls/women wanting to use their bodies as powerful tools to set limits. In accordance with the traditional Ling gymnastics, in which body and mind develops into a harmonious whole, the introduction of kickboxing in PE would have a major impact on how girls and boys could relate to each other in the community as well as develop the mind and body in harmony. It can be hypothesized that by including kickboxing in PE girls' bodies would be given the opportunity to be powerful, thus enable girls as well as boys to identify themselves as transcendent individuals rather than to experience the powerlessness and mental illness which often develops already during puberty.

Western medical tradition, resting on Hippocrates and Galen, has been divided into two parts: hygiene (or dietetics) – the conservative/preventive part, and therapeutics – the curative part. Historians and sociologists of medicine have shown an unparalleled interest in the curative side of medicine, an interest that possibly reflects the focus of modern western medicine on curing disease. Conversely, the conservative side of medicine and prevention as a medical method and process has attracted far less scholarly attention in the studies in the history of medicine. Nonetheless, in both the Hippocratic and Galenic works that dominated medical thought and practice until well into the seventeenth century, medicine was not only conceptualized as the art of curing disease but also as the art of preserving health – the art of wellbeing. The Renaissance in Italy saw the recovery and revival of the classical dietetic literature by the medical humanists, which had a profound impact on the organisation of academic medicine and brought developments in the preventive paradigm. During the sixteenth century the genre of preventive literature flourished, with numerous medical writings being published in both Latin and the vernacular. These medical writings (academic treatises, health manuals, books of secrets, etc.), which were shaped by historical events and socio-cultural parameters, reflect contemporary perceptions of and attitudes to health and disease. In this historical background the present study examines the De arte gymnastica (Venice, 1569), a medical treatise by the humanist physician Girolamo Mercuriale of Forlì (1530-1606). In his De arte gymnastica Mercuriale promotes the medical gymnastics as an ideal method for the conservation and/or obtainment of health based on the benefits of exercise in the maintenance of health and the treatment of disease. Providing a reading of Mercuriale's work in terms of a medical discourse, the present study aims to throw additional light on the historical understanding of Mercuriale's De arte gymnastica as a sixteenth-century medical treatise and his medical gymnastics as a method of preventive medical treatment, addressing Mercuriale's claims regarding aspects of medical theory and practice. In this endeavour the present study identifies Mercuriale's De arte gymnastica as a product of the sixteenth-century Roman context, taking into consideration Mercuriale's professional post as the personal physician of Cardinal Alessandro Farnese (1520- 4 1589), a leading Churchman and one of the richest and most powerful patrons of his day. In this context the present study demonstrates how Mercuriales' medical discourse as a court physician addressing the elite audience of Rome corresponded to contemporary medical needs, issues, debates but as well as to social-cultural demands and aspirations as these emerged in a time of religious and spiritual crisis that was marked by the Council of Trent.

Abstract:
In the early modern elite court culture, dance held a prominent sociopolitical position. Nevertheless, in the Counter-Reformation era, the Catholic Church put dance culture under scrutiny. The moresca, one of the most popular dance spectacles that expressed the elite’s taste in exceptional and wondrous bodies, was criticized as deviant by Catholic reformers. In this criticism, the religious discourse often overlapped with contemporary medical discourse, which considered aspects of dance culture as unhealthy for both body and soul. In Counter-Reformation Rome, Girolamo Mercuriale, the court physician of Cardinal Alessandro Farnese, following the aspirations of the Counter-Reformation papacy for spiritual reform, moderates in his medical treatise De arte gymnastica the controversial moresca: by modifying it into a medical exercise, he regulates the moresca in both medical and religious terms, making it an appropriate body practice for the elite.

Abstract:
Chapter 6 argues that coaches, officials, and the cultures they create, are pivotal to ensuring women’s artistic gymnastics is a feminist experience. This chapter offers a nuanced account of abuse in the sport and the Federation internationale de gymnastique’s response. Analyzing the gendered division of coaching in gymnastics, it demonstrates pervasive hegemonic masculinity that has been fundamental to how the sport is practised. It shows how Eastern bloc coaches who migrated to the West, like the Károlyis, were tolerated rather than part of any true collaboration. Foreigners were often blamed for abuse, yet it is clear that issues existed before their arrival. The sport is characterized by a problematic culture, based on fear, that stems from the imbalance of power between the child gymnasts and the adults employed to achieve victories. Above all, this chapter confirms that it is true collaboration that gets results, as seen in the positive coach-athlete relationships responsible for some of the most illustrious gymnastic careers.

Abstract:
In the 19th century in many European countries people started to see the importance of hygiene and health care, as those factors had a significant impact on the health and life expectancy of citizens. However, Poland, which was at that time under the rule of Russia, Prussia, and Austria-Hungary, was extremely backward in this respect. As a result Poles were physically weak and sickly, and their life expectancy was among the lowest in Europe. The same applied to children and young people. Great social activists, including writers and publicists, encouraged the organisation of health-care, hygiene, healthy eating, gymnastics, tourism, and various sports for children and adolescents. They advocated simple ideas, which nowadays are obvious for everybody, but at that time were innovative, and their activity must be regarded as Promethean. The “Falcon” Polish Gymnastic Society and scouting also played a great role in this respect. The activities undertaken by Polish writers and social activists to improve the physical condition, health, and hygiene of young Poles brought positive effects.

Abstract:
This concluding chapter brings together the diverse themes covered throughout the book, showing how the impact of the Cold War on gymnastics is still being felt today. It also demonstrates the links between the issues traversed in earlier chapters of this book, from economic policy, to the structure of the international sports system, cheating, coaching, abuse, and incarnations of femininity. This chapter concludes that all of these influences on gymnastics are the result of international conflict, as one would expect from the Cold War, but also a result of collaboration. However, collaboration has seldom characterized the relationship between coaches and gymnasts. Despite the balance of power internationally, the sport has been hampered by a fundamental imbalance between athletes and officials. Traversing existing mechanisms that could be used to combat abuse, including an increased minimum age rule, it argues that gymnastics’ needs to look back to its feminist roots to restore the sport as safe and empowering for women.

Abstract:
Activities such as ballet and other dance and rhythmic and artistic gymnastics are often recommended in childhood and adolescence. Among the many required motor capabilities to perform the activities above is flexibility. However, there is a gap between flexibility in scientific production and the proper use of this knowledge in dance classrooms. One of the reasons might be due to dance culture, which regards its knowledge to empirical learning. Many dancers believe that to improve their flexibility, the longer and the more intense they stretch, the better. The excess in the flexibility training might cause acute or even chronic injuries that may preclude dancers' performance without proper treatment. Although the range of motion represents flexibility, understanding how flexibility improves requires understanding how the muscle-tendon unit behaves to the stretches. This chapter aims to assess the flexibility; improve this capability; and explore differences in training, stretch technique, and some other variables that may affect flexibility performance in dance.

This chapter provides a guide for producing a well-practiced skier in a short time of service. It is a good idea to get familiar with the theory of ski-running as much as possible beforehand, in order to make it more comprehensible and easier to grasp in practice. Along with theory, there are plenty of preparatory exercises that can accelerate as well as facilitate the study of running and produce good results. Until the start of winter, the chapter recommends strengthening and developing muscles so that as soon as the snow falls practice can begin. But there is also the need to train one's internal organs in order to open up one's breathing; to broaden the chest; and to learn how to turn and hold onto the poles. One can develop the techniques of movement effectively by learning them as gymnastic exercises in formation.

Physicians are increasingly confronted with medical problems related to sport. Female athlete triad—consists of disordered eating, amenorrhoea, and osteoporosis, which are most commonly seen in those pursuing endurance sports or gymnastics. Clinical assessment includes a nutritional screen to assess calorie and calcium intake, measurement of serum tri-iodothyronine level (typically low) and of bone density, along with exclusion of other causes of amenorrhoea. The most effective treatment is to re-establish natural menstruation with a combination of reducing training intensity and increasing calorie intake, both of which the athlete may find hard to accept....

It also provides ways to counteract cheating and strategic manipulation of the judges or the voters. The desirable properties of classical social choice theory are satisfied by the majority judgment method. The chapter also explains several key ideas, including majority-grade, majority-ranking, majority-value, majority-gauge, abbreviated majority-value, and kth-order function. It demonstrates the superiority of the majority judgment to any other method of voting and judging competitions by comparing the basic principles of the traditional theory of social choice.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT In recent years, artistic gymnastics has been characterized by a constantly increasing complexity of the exercises performed. In this regard, the control and assessment of coordination abilities strongly activate the system for sports selection in adolescents. The research aims to establish the connection of coordination abilities with the technical training of young gymnasts. We selected coordination tests to identify the most significant component of its structure in the initial selection in gymnastics. We determined the technical level of the studied gymnasts through expert assessment in natural conditions of competition – State Championship 2022. The object of the research are the coordination abilities in the selection of 6-7-year-old girls, and the subject of the study are the components of coordination and their connection with technical training. In this research, we used the following methods: testing method, expert evaluation method, and mathematical-statistical methods – variation and correlation analysis. The processed results show that the overall score from the coordination tests has a moderate correlation with the technical level of the results taken from the competition. The static equilibrium stability test shows the highest degree of correlation on the technical level of all gymnastic apparatus. The results of the other tests, which showed a lower correlation, remain debatable. In conclusion, we can summarize that establishing the level of coordination skills will help the process of selecting talented gymnasts.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT The technique of gymnastics elements is an important factor for the development in gymnastics. Parallel bars is one of the six apparatuses in men’s artistic gymnastics all-around. Each gymnastic combination should include elements from four structural groups, which are: Elements in support or through support on 2 bars, elements starting in upper arm position, long swings in hang on 1 or 2 bars, and underwings and dismounts. Gymnasts strive to increase the difficulty of the per-formed combination over time by including elements with higher difficulty in the 10 (8 for juniors) elements included in the difficulty score. Due to its complexity and the specificity of the starting position, the elements from second structural group on parallel bars appear to be a crucial factor in the formation of difficulty score in the competitive exercises. A new element in group two is backward uprise and 5/4 salto fwd straddled to hang on parallel bars. The purpose of this study was to explain the mechanics of the Backward uprise and 5/4 salto fwd straddled to hang on Parallel Bars, and to identify how the release conditions were created. 2D video-based data was used to analyze the new element recorded at NSA Sofia. APAS was used for digitizing and DLT techniques were used (APAS-Edition 2020, version 14.3.7). The space was calibrated with 8 points with previously known coordinates, and the movement digitized with 7 points of the main joints and the head. Hip action was characterized by a double large input which peaked close to the horizontal on the downswing and after the down vertical due to the active swing action, followed by a smaller positive arms power contribution as the release was approached. Because of swing action, the ankles velocity peaked close after the down vertical. The dominant role of positive hip extension, swing and arms pushing action was highlighted as a major factor contributing to the creation of the final body orientation and desirable release conditions.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Rhythmic gymnastics, like other sports disciplines called “artistic”, is continuously developing in a sports-technical sense. Gymnastics varieties, such as “dance gymnastics”, “rhythmical gymnastics”, “expressive gymnastics”, and “plastic and stage expression gymnastics” have lost their individuality but different elements of their means of expression find their place in the requirements for composition. The efforts of the specialists in this sport are aimed at preserving the identity of this sports discipline, namely, using various musical accompaniments and a wide range of dance movements combined with complex exercises. The aim of the research was to trace the development of the difficulty in routines and a retrospect of the main indicators for making competitive routines for the period 1963-2021 was made with the use of a theoretical and synthesis method. The evaluation of dance elements and complex exercises in competitive programs of gymnasts was in the very first Code of Rules known. There are three different components – difficulty of the exercises, general impression, and accuracy of execution. The general changes in the difficulty of the exercises can be clearly seen if we divide the Codes of Rules into the following periods: 1) 1963-1971, 2) 1976-1984, 3) 1997-2005, and 4) 2009-2021. The changes are due to two major factors: - objective – perfection of the training process, emergence of new exercises, gymnasts’ exclusive motor abilities; choreographs, musicians, dancer’ participation in gymnasts’ preparation; - subjective – creation and modification of the rules by members of rhythmic gymnastics technical committee who are representatives of different schools and cultures, with different concepts about the development of the future image of this sport. The retrospect of the requirements in the competitive rules shows that the greatest transformation of rhythmic gymnastics is in its turning into a complex sport.

Abstract:
The complexity of the training process, the increase of the demands in dealing with the training objectives, as well as the tendency to decrease the age of reaching the great performances in rhythmic gymnastics, are aspects that require the continuous improvement of the sports selection strategies. The current tendencies of the rhythmic gymnastics contest programs highlight exceptional performances, materialized in practice by higher difficulty technical executions with increased rates of reaction speed, the gymnast being forced to react quickly to stimuli, respectively to the movement of the object, for the success of the element or of the combination of elements. The reaction time has major implications in the efficiency of dealing with the specific technical elements, being especially important in the incipient stage of the formation of the skill for using the apparatus, respectively the I st stage of the sports training in the rhythmic gymnastics. The overall objective was to contribute to the improvement of the initial selection criteria in rhythmic gymnastics by objectively evaluating the complex reaction time to visual stimuli. The purpose of the study was to identify the importance and relevance of the TReaction Co software in the selection of gymnasts with real valences for practicing this sports field. The study was carried out on a sample of 30 gymnasts aged between 6 and 8 years old, in the sports hall of the UNEFS Bucharest. The testing was performed using the TReaction Co software, through which the complex reaction time was evaluated for the upper limbs -the dominant hand and the non-dominant hand. The results obtained by using the TReaction Co software were a useful step in completing the existing sources in the specialty literature of rhythmic gymnastics.

Abstract:
The trends and development of artistic gymnastics have required the complication of the competitive combinations in individual apparatus. This has led to the need to improve the technique of basic exercises with the help of auxiliary apparatus in artistic gymnastics. The aim present study is to establish the role of auxiliary apparatuses in the study a kip of uneven bars. The ten best performances were selected through expert evaluation. Using frame-by-frame motion analysis, we measured the angles in the different phases of the impact of the exercise. The object of the study is the technique of the basic exercises of the uneven bars, and the subject is the need for auxiliary apparatuses in practice. To achieve this aim, we used the methods of expert evaluation, biomechanical analysis, and mathematical-statistical methods – variation analysis. The analysis shows that the average value of the angle in the hip joints in the preparatory phase and in the main information closes to or decreases with the angle when performing the exercise of the auxiliary apparatuses – a ball in the preparatory phase; per cylinder – in the main phase; on a simulator – also in the main phase. At the angle in the shoulder joints, both the coincidences and the differences in the individual parts when performing a kip. The results for angles that do not coincide with the angles of the auxiliary apparatuses are considered. We don’t know whether the auxiliary apparatus will give the necessary effect in learning the correct technique when performing a kip. In conclusion, we can summarize that the obtained data will help specialists in gymnastics to study the technique of basic exercises of individual apparatuses in artistic gymnastics in adolescent gymnasts.
