Abstract:
Abstract. In oligotrophic tropical and subtropical oceans, where strong stratification can limit the replenishment of surface nitrate, dinitrogen (N2) fixation by diazotrophs can represent a significant source of nitrogen (N) for primary production. The VAHINE (VAriability of vertical and tropHIc transfer of fixed N2 in the south-wEst Pacific) experiment was designed to examine the fate of diazotroph-derived nitrogen (DDN) in such ecosystems. In austral summer 2013, three large ( ∼ 50 m3) in situ mesocosms were deployed for 23 days in the New Caledonia lagoon, an ecosystem that typifies the low-nutrient, low-chlorophyll environment, to stimulate diazotroph production. The zooplankton component of the study aimed to measure the incorporation of DDN into zooplankton biomass, and assess the role of direct diazotroph grazing by zooplankton as a DDN uptake pathway. Inside the mesocosms, the diatom–diazotroph association (DDA) het-1 predominated during days 5–15 while the unicellular diazotrophic cyanobacteria UCYN-C predominated during days 15–23. A Trichodesmium bloom was observed in the lagoon (outside the mesocosms) towards the end of the experiment. The zooplankton community was dominated by copepods (63 % of total abundance) for the duration of the experiment. Using two-source N isotope mixing models we estimated a mean ∼ 28 % contribution of DDN to zooplankton nitrogen biomass at the start of the experiment, indicating that the natural summer peak of N2 fixation in the lagoon was already contributing significantly to the zooplankton. Stimulation of N2 fixation in the mesocosms corresponded with a generally low-level enhancement of DDN contribution to zooplankton nitrogen biomass, but with a peak of ∼ 73 % in mesocosm 1 following the UCYN-C bloom. qPCR analysis targeting four of the common diazotroph groups present in the mesocosms (Trichodesmium, het-1, het-2, UCYN-C) demonstrated that all four were ingested by copepod grazers, and that their abundance in copepod stomachs generally corresponded with their in situ abundance. 15N2 labelled grazing experiments therefore provided evidence for direct ingestion and assimilation of UCYN-C-derived N by the zooplankton, but not for het-1 and Trichodesmium, supporting an important role of secondary pathways of DDN to the zooplankton for the latter groups, i.e. DDN contributions to the dissolved N pool and uptake by nondiazotrophs. This study appears to provide the first evidence of direct UCYN-C grazing by zooplankton, and indicates that UCYN-C-derived N contributes significantly to the zooplankton food web in the New Caledonia lagoon through a combination of direct grazing and secondary pathways.

Abstract:
In this paper, we propose Deep Data Assimilation (DDA), an integration of Data Assimilation (DA) with Machine Learning (ML). DA is the Bayesian approximation of the true state of some physical system at a given time by combining time-distributed observations with a dynamic model in an optimal way. We use a ML model in order to learn the assimilation process. In particular, a recurrent neural network, trained with the state of the dynamical system and the results of the DA process, is applied for this purpose. At each iteration, we learn a function that accumulates the misfit between the results of the forecasting model and the results of the DA. Subsequently, we compose this function with the dynamic model. This resulting composition is a dynamic model that includes the features of the DA process and that can be used for future prediction without the necessity of the DA. In fact, we prove that the DDA approach implies a reduction of the model error, which decreases at each iteration; this is achieved thanks to the use of DA in the training process. DDA is very useful in that cases when observations are not available for some time steps and DA cannot be applied to reduce the model error. The effectiveness of this method is validated by examples and a sensitivity study. In this paper, the DDA technology is applied to two different applications: the Double integral mass dot system and the Lorenz system. However, the algorithm and numerical methods that are proposed in this work can be applied to other physics problems that involve other equations and/or state variables.

Abstract:
There is often excess capacity in detention centers. One of them is in the Class IIA Pekalongan Prison. In dealing with the spread of Covid-19 in prisons, the government makes policies in the form of assimilation and integration for prisoners to reduce the rate of Covid-19 transmissions. The formulation of the research problem (1) how is the implementation process of providing assimilation and integration during the Covid-19 pandemic at the Class IIA Pekalongan Prison? and (2) what is the perspective of fiqh siyasah regarding the provision of assimilation and integration during the Covid-19 pandemic at the Class IIA Pekalongan Prison?. This research is a field research using a qualitative approach. The result of this research is that the process of implementing assimilation and integration in the Class IIA Pekalongan detention center has been running in accordance with the Regulation of the Minister of Law and Human Rights. The application of assimilation and integration in the perspective of siyasa fiqh can be said to be not the same. Thus, the process of assimilation and integration in the Class IIA Pekalongan prison has not been fully in accordance with the instructions of Islamic law. Meanwhile, in the Permenkumham perspective, the provision of assimilation and integration in prisons is in accordance with the Minister of Law and Human Rights Regulation No. 10 and 32 of 2020.

Abstract:
Assimilation is a process of dynamic communication and mutual influence between two cultures, which grow together and adapt to each other. In the Madurese context, social interaction and cultural assimilation between the Chinese community and Madurese society develops in a complex and diverse social space, depending on the historical and sociological context. One example of cultural assimilation in Madura is the attachment of cultural adaptation by Chinese Muslims on the one hand and the attachment of Chinese art and architecture to Madurese cultural works on the other. This study intends to explain the existence of Chinese Muslims in Madura, both from historical and sociological perspective, as well as their struggles amid the flow of Madurese culture which is perceived as Islamic culture. It is hoped that this research topic can contribute to the discourse on social identity, religion and ethnicity. In addition, this qualitative research, that is based on observation and in-depth interviews, is expected to elucidate a piece of social interaction and cultural assimilation among Chinese Muslims in Madura.

Abstract:
<p><em>Islam, as religion which has a universal concept, views that assimilation is inhern (traits) which stands in every individu, thus, in the next stage also dwells in every human group as the group of individuals themselves. The relationship between Islam and assimilation is absolute; it can be seen in al Hujurat: 13 which mean that the necessity for human to socialize or assimilate. In addition, the meaning of the verse is the design of God about pluralism in the present context and review by using the term of multiculturalism. Assimilation requires the interrelatedness of understanding and mutual respect of differences as a thing that must be upheld, because only with mutual respect the assimilation will be carried out responsibly and dignityly.

Abstract:
Reef building corals are both autotroph (they live in symbiosis with intracellular dinoflagellate of the Symbiodiniaceae family, which provide them with photosynthates) and heterotroph, they are able to feed on a wide range of prey from organic matter to plankton. Coral reefs are threatened by global warming, which disrupts the symbiosis between corals and their symbionts, leading to mass coral bleaching. Planktonic diazotrophs, which have the particularity of fixing the atmospheric dinitrogen (N2) and transferring this diazotroph-derived nitrogen (N) (called DDN) along the food web, could be an alternative nutrient source for corals. Only a preliminary study has shown that one coral species could feed on planktonic diazotrophs (Benavides et al., 2016). Symbiotic diazotrophs also live in association with corals and transfer them some DDN. In the context of climate change, where corals are threatened by both acidification (OA) and ocean warming, this work proposes to study the role of planktonic and symbiotic diazotrophs in N acquisition by corals and in their resistance/resilience to these changes. (i) First, we quantified DDN assimilation rates through heterotrophic nutrition of diazotrophs and symbiotic diazotrophs. Our results reveal the importance of N intake through heterotrophy on planktonic diazotrophs as N assimilation rates through this way were a thousand times higher than those obtained via endosymbiotic diazotrophs. (ii) We also showed for the first time that thermally stressed corals are able to increase not only their consumption of planktonic diazotrophs and plankton that likely benefited from N2 fixation, but also more specifically their ingestion of a very specific taxonomic group of picoplankton : the ubiquitous marine cyanobacterium Synechococcus. (iii) An experiment conducted in situ, on corals growing in natural CO2 vents in Ambitle (Papua New Guinea), where the pCO2 is close to that expected by the end of the century, allowed us to demonstrate that DDN assimilation rates in the Symbiodiniaceae were significantly higher in comparison to an ambient CO2 site, concomitant with a restructured diazotroph community and the particular prevalence of Alphaproteobacteria. (iv) Finally, in laboratory conditions, we have quantified the effects of temperature stress on corals fed exclusively with planktonic diazotrophs. Corals benefiting from DDN supplied by diazotrophic plankton, would be more resistant to bleaching, they retain more of their Symbiodiniaceae and maintain their growth and electron transfer rates (in Photosystem II, ETR) compared to unfed corals. Given the high abundance of picoplankton in oligotrophic waters at large, our results suggest that corals capable of adjusting their diazotrophic communities and exploiting N-rich picoplankton sources to offset their increased N requirements, may be able to cope better with OA and global warming

Abstract:
This study explores the viability of parameter estimation in the comprehensive general circulation model ECHAM6 using ensemble Kalman filter data assimilation techniques. Four closure parameters of the cumulus-convection scheme are estimated using increasingly less idealized scenarios ranging from perfect-model experiments to the assimilation of conventional observations. Updated parameter values from experiments with real observations are used to assess the error of the model state on short 6 h forecasts and on climatological timescales. All parameters converge to their default values in single parameter perfect-model experiments. Estimating parameters simultaneously has a neutral effect on the success of the parameter estimation, but applying an imperfect model deteriorates the assimilation performance. With real observations, single parameter estimation generates the default parameter value in one case, converges to different parameter values in two cases, and diverges in the fourth case. The implementation of the two converging parameters influences the model state: Although the estimated parameter values lead to an overall error reduction on short timescales, the error of the model state increases on climatological timescales.

Abstract:
The thesis is aimed at understanding of molecular mechanisms of autophagic degradation of peroxisomes (pexophagy) in the yeast Yarrowia lipolytica. This microorganism has been extensively used to explore peroxisome biogenesis (Titorenko and Rachubinski, 2000). Gunkel et al. (1999) intoduced Y. lypolitica into pexophagy studies. However, the field of pexophagic research on this yeast remains quite unexplored. This work involved following tasks: (1) the development and optimization of Y. lipolytica as a model system to study peroxisome degradation; (2) Y. lipolytica genes and proteins implicated in pexophagy should be found and characterized; (3) a proper easy-to-handle selection procedure to isolate novel peroxisome degradation-deficient(pdd) mutants of Y. lipolytica should be devised.

Abstract:
GPS integrated Total Electron Content measurements received at the ground or in space are used for tomographic reconstruction of the ionospheric electron density distribution. The IRI/GCPM model is used as initialisation of the tomographic MART algorithm. During the procedure GPS TEC data are iteratively assimilated to the model. To test the potential of the reconstruction, electron density profiles from IRI/GCPM and the assimilation are compared with ionosonde measurements and CHAMP radio occultation profiles for dates during the HIRAC campaign in April 2001. All profiling methods show electron density values of similar magnitude. It is shown that including TEC GPS data corrects the model towards the ionosonde measurements.

The present dissertation analyzes the integration behavior of Chinese immigrants in Germany through a case study in a new perspective: The Chinese in Germany reconstruct the Chinese identity for their children and themselves by learning the Chinese so that they can be better recognized and integrated in Germany. In short: Parents let their children learn to become Chinese so they can live better in Germany. Their carefully organized and reconstructed ethnic identity, as the product of the integration strategy, acts as the lever be-tween their two living worlds so that they can improve their chances, especially in Germany.

Abstract:
This paper highlights archival evidence and dramaturgic mythemes in order to reconsider the historiographical issues related to the XVIIth-century theatrical reception of El burlador de Sevilla y convidado de piedra outside of Spain. Among the crossroads of theatrical practices alive in XVIIth-century Naples, Don Juan underwent a rapid process of assimilation and transformation. The chronology of its Neapolitan debut at the Teatro di San Bartolomeo is re-examined in this paper, while unfolding some new and possible scenarios interweaving history and dramaturgy, the stage and the historical political events of the Kingdom of Naples during the first decades of the XVIIth century. This study examines the Mediterranean basis consolidating the myth of Don Juan – the character with «feet made of wind» (Garboli) – and defining its dramaturgic status all around Europe.

Abstract:
In his investigation of the expansion of the cult of the “deity of the night” in Anatolia and her relationship with Ištar (Studien zu den Boğazköy-Texten 46, 259-439), J. Miller exposed the complexity of a diachronical analysis of the religious phenomenon represented by the diffusion of local “forms” or “aspects” of Ištar during the late Hittite period. However, many relevant issues concerning the role of the goddess in the Hittite dynastic pantheon, heavily influenced by Ḫurrian beliefs, and her presence in local pantheons, are still to be dealt with. As a case study, the present contribution will focus in particular on the goddess Ištar of Ḫattarina, attested together with the “Kanešite gods” Pirwa and Aškašepa in Muwatalli II’s prayer CTH 381. This unusual association may be derived from the interpretation of a local female deity traditionally defined as MUNUS.LUGAL, “queen” in Hittite local pantheons, as a form of Ištar.

Abstract:
AbstractIn recent years, stochastic parametrizations have been ubiquitous in modelling uncertainty in fluid dynamics models. One source of model uncertainty comes from the coarse graining of the fine-scale data and is in common usage in computational simulations at coarser scales. In this paper, we look at two such stochastic parametrizations: the Stochastic Advection by Lie Transport (SALT) parametrization introduced by Holm (Proc A 471(2176):20140963, 19, 2015) and the Location Uncertainty (LU) parametrization introduced by Mémin (Geophys Astrophys Fluid Dyn 108(2):119–146, 2014). Whilst both parametrizations are available for full-scale models, we study their reduced order versions obtained by projecting them on a complex vector Fourier mode triad of eigenfunctions of the curl. Remarkably, these two parametrizations lead to the same reduced order model, which we term the helicity-preserving stochastic triad (HST). This reduced order model is then compared with an alternative model which preserves the energy of the system, and which is termed the energy preserving stochastic triad (EST). These low-dimensional models are ideal benchmark models for testing new Data Assimilation algorithms: they are easy to implement, exhibit diverse behaviours depending on the choice of the coefficients and come with natural physical properties such as the conservation of energy and helicity.

Abstract:
Abstract In 1891, the same year that May French-Sheldon sailed to Africa, Frances Willard addressed the National Council of Women, a gathering that included the heads of most of the major women ‘s organizations from around the country. Willard tried to clarify what she thought was at the heart of the woman question. “Women as a class have been the world ‘s chief toilers; it is a world-old proverb that ‘their work is never done.” ‘Although she could have been thinking about women working in factories, or as teachers, nurses, and domestic servants, or even aJl women ‘s unpaid domestic labor in their own homes, Willard did not make reference to any of these instances. Instead, she drew upon the observations of one of her temperance workers on an Indian reservation in Florida. As Willard reported, this temperance worker saw oxen grazing and a horse roaming the pasture, while two women were grinding at the mill, pushing its wheels laboriously by hand. Turning to the old Indian chief who sat by, the temperance woman said, with pent-up indignation, “Why don ‘t you yoke the oxen or harness the horses and let them turn the milll” The “calm view” set forth in his answer contains a whole body of evidence touching the woman question. Hear him: “Horse cost 1uoney; ox cost money; squaw cost nothing.

Abstract:
From the perspective of governing elites on both sides of the Atlantic, the expanding world of goods was seen as a civilizing and assimilative process, but using an analysis of litigation this chapter shows that while enticing French Canadians into the marketplace did integrate them into global networks of trade and credit, they nevertheless sought to don British dress and purchase British manufactured goods to articulate and enhance their own identities. Not only does this chapter shift the historical gaze from production to consumption, but it greatly expands the term merchants beyond those large overseas merchants who have been well studied, to incorporate the vital world of licit and illicit trade by shopkeepers, artisans, women, and peasants, to draw attention to the importance to the internal circulation of goods. My exploration of the regulatory apparatus of government as well as the everyday understanding of goods, credit, and debt shows, however, that the eighteenth century was not a pivot to modernity; rather, conceptions of the marketplace remained tied to an older moral economy outlook.

Abstract:
Tropospheric wind field is a primary atmospheric variable, the knowledge of which is required at a global scale for operational meteorology and climatology studies. With the present state-of-the-art technology a spaceborne Doppler coherent lidar is foreseen to fullfil the requirements on sampling and wind speed accuracy. An initial feasability study has been conducted at NOAA in the late 70's proposing a viable concept for a laser remote sensor instrument WINDSAT. In the late 80's NASA and ESA started two studies on wind Doppler lidar so-called LAWS and ALADIN respectively to be launched either on a polar or a low inclinaison orbit depending on the scientific objectives and instrument performances dictated by the overall technology : lidar and platform. In these two studies a conical scanning mode provides the horizontal coverage at the earth surface. In a separate way restricting at first the scientific objectives to the climatology of the tropics CNES in France started a feasability study for a low inclinaison mission so-called BEST which includes among others a wind Doppler lidar. A new instrumental concept is proposed for BEST which is a multi-fixed line-of-sight configuration relaxing the constraints on lag-angle compensation and laser technology. So, a comparison of the two scanning modes has to be made keeping in mind the applications in order to show what can be acomplished with an increasing instrumental complexity. The various subjects to be covered by a comparison analysis are : horizontal coverage, cloud obstruction, sampling at various time scales, representativeness and wind speed accuracy, but also the data assimilation methods. Such a study is conducted for BEST and ALADIN by LMD and DMN following a step by step approach with an increasing complexity and completeness.
