Abstract:

David Harvey gehört seit fast zwei Jahrzehnten zu den einflußreichsten Theoretikern der »Neuen Stadtforschung«*. Bekannt geworden als Autor eines Lehrbuchs der positivistischen Geographie (Harvey, 1969), wurde er zum enfant terrible dieser traditionalistischen Disziplin, als er in Social Justice and the City (1973 erstmals einen marxistischen Ansatz wählte (cf.Badcock; 1984). Dieses Buch ist dann auch in der Folge wegen seiner explosiven Wirkung innerhalb der Geographie oft als sein wichtigstes angesehen worden. Verglichen mit späteren Schriften Harveys war Social Justice and the City eine zögerliche Annäherung an eine materialistische Position in der Geographie. Seine Entwicklung von einer liberal-humanistischen zu einer marxistischen Perspektive, die er noch als mögliche Varianten einer Lösung der sozialen Frage im räumlichen System der Stadt nebeneinander stehen läßt, organisiert die Struktur des Buches. Harveys Positionen ähnelten denen des französischen Marxisten Lefebvre, hoben sich jedoch von der strukturalistisch-althusserianischen Vorgehensweise Manuel Castells' ab, der in den 70er Jahren die Standards in der marxistischen Stadttheorie setzte.

Abstract:

This text discusses and explains the relation between the urban crisis today and the antivalue in respect to the conceptual framework by David Harvey, a well-known British geographer. He approaches this theme in many of his books, including ‘Marx, capital and the madness of economic reason’, published in Brazil, in 2018. This text uses this book as a starting point for the discussion of how the contemporary world, which is increasingly urban, is dominated by the Empire of antivalue, especially in the form of a growing debt. The antivalue, in the form of capital holder of interest, plays a crucial role in the accumulation of capital, articulating production, circulation and realization of commodities, promoting and facilitating the geographical movement of capital and the transfer of capital between economic circuits and cycles of production. However, debt is the favorite form of antivalue under capitalism today. In addition to being supported and granted by the State in a variety of ways, including through public debt, debt imprisons all economic agents in perpetual servitude. Debt follows the tendency of continuous production of value and surplus value under capitalism, a movement that Harvey calls bad infinity. Antivalue in its form of debt is also called fetishism of capital, which defines the contradictory situation in which money alone seems to have the magic powers to create more money. The consequences of growing debt to the urban crisis go beyond the necessity of solving fiscal problems of the State. The need to produce value and surplus value, in addition to the service of the debt generates urban spaces marked by gentrification and segregation. In sum, the text discusses the urban crisis today in the context of the domination by the financial-real estate complex, basing the discussion on Marx’s theory of value and the concept of antivalue, as presented by David Harvey.

This paper confronts the distinction between an immanent eternity and a transcendent one with David Harvey’s concept of time-space compression, trying to show that this author, from a Nietzschean analysis of his considerations about the post-modem condition, makes use of a traditional conceptual apparatus to evaluate that condition. So we place the Harveyan concept of time-space compression in a transcendent eternity, which is still conformed to the tradition, according to our interpretation of Nietzsche.

O trabalho em questão corresponde a uma resenha de um dos livros mais importantes do geógrafo estadunidense, David Harvey: "O novo imperialismo", de 2005.David Harvey, geógrafo estadunidense que se reivindica como um “materialista histórico-geográfico” é um dos maiores nomes da atualidade no que se refere ao estudo do imperialismo, sobretudo o imperialismo dos EUA. Em O novo imperialismo, o autor busca analisar o capitalismo de hoje buscando compreender qual o papel (e os objetivos) de um “novo” imperialismo nas atuais condições econômicas, políticas e sociais. A partir de Hannah Arendt, critica a definição leniniana de imperialismo como última etapa do capitalismo, compreendendo-o como “o primeiro estágio do domínio político da burguesia” (Harvey, 2005, p. 107).O objetivo principal de Harvey é investigar as forças motrizes das ações dos EUA exercidas nos últimos anos, tendo como referencial de análise dois vetores: a lógica territorial e a lógica capitalista de poder (que não existem sem contradição, ou seja, é extremamente difícil combinar estas duas lógicas). Analisando dialeticamente as duas lógicas, o autor vai defender que embora diferentes e contraditórias, elas se “entrelaçam de formas complexas e por vezes contraditórias” (p. 34) e seus efeitos são distintos em cada lugar.

Abstract:

David Harvey is a neo-Marxist theorist influential in many disciplines. This paper analyses his specific use of Marx?s theory as a contribution to urban sociology. Observing cities in the context of a constant need of capitalism to overcome the problem of over-accumulation of capital, urbanization is seen as an important factor of capitalist development. Methods of temporary relocation and resolutions of capitalist contradictions, with the help of so-called accumulation by dispossession, are intensified in neo-liberalism, which is seen as a project for the restoration of class power. Therefore, Harvey demands more equitable cities in which the interest of private capital will not be the main factor of their shaping. Harvey?s Marxism is alluring, but it is also the subject of numerous criticisms.

Este breve texto tenta explicitar a crítica feita por David Harvey, em Condição pós-moderna, a Jean-François-Lyotard. O trabalho leva em consideração as leituras que ambos fazem da chamada “pós-modernidade”, tendo em mente, dentre outras coisas, a surpresa de Harvey diante do conceito de “justiça” apresentado por Lyotard e a problematização, por parte de Harvey, do fato da intensa fragmentação que se dá, sobretudo, a partir de 1970, além da questão da cumplicidade crescente entre o pós-modernismo e a estetização da política. O método de análise confronta os procedimentos de Harvey e Lyotard diante da pós-modernidade.

Abstract:

O objetivo deste artigo é fundamentar a escolha pela perspectiva teórica do materialismo histórico-geográfico, desenvolvida pelo geógrafo David Harvey para compreender uma região. Para tanto, apresentamos e discutimos também os referenciais predominantes nas análises sobre regiões, com o intuito de demonstrar os limites desses referenciais e as possibilidades abertas pela perspectiva de Harvey. Assim, apresentamos alguns dos principais conceitos que têm orientado as ações de governos dos mais diversos matizes; a abordagem de David Harvey bem como seus pressupostos teóricos e históricos; e uma análise comparativa em que demonstramos as limitações dos referenciais predominantes e as possibilidades da perspectiva do último autor. Ao final, conclui-se que o materialismo histórico-geográfico permite compreender que as dinâmicas sociais e econômicas de uma região se caracterizam em processos conflituosos e contraditórios e resultam em uma configuração regional específica e transitória.

Abstract:

This contribution presents reflections on the contributions of and the debate between David Harvey and Michael Hardt/Toni Negri that we feature as the opening part of the tripleC-special issue “Marx@200: Debating Capitalism & Perspectives for the Future of Radical Theory”. My reflection contextualises the debate by a) discussing the origin and genesis of Marx’s concepts of alienation, formal/real subsumption, and primitive accumulation and b) situating the arguments in earlier works by Harvey, Hardt and Negri. This paper points out differences as well as the strong commonalities between the works of Michael Hardt/Toni Negri and David Harvey. It discusses how the categories of universal alienation, formal/real subsumption of society under capital, original/ongoing primitive accumulation of capital are related. Harvey and Hardt/Negri show that Marx’s theory and politics are alive 200 years after his birth and will haunt capitalism as long as it exists. The paper concludes by arguing that Harvey’s concept of anti-value and the autonomous notion of self-valorisation point towards democratic, commons-based alternatives to capitalism.

Abstract:

O livro Cidades Rebeldes de David Harvey, originalmente publicado em 2012, oferece uma atualização da proposta de Henri Lefebvre, em O Direito à Cidade, de 1968. A presente resenha pretende fazer uma releitura da proposta de Harvey a partir da perspectiva brasileira contemporânea, dissertando sobre os processos de reprodução do capital por meio da produção do urbano, em seus meandros tanto subjetivos, quanto materiais e financeiros. A posta de Harvey verte esperança e responsabilidade nos movimentos sociais como linha de fuga para demanda e produção de um mundo mais igualitário.

Abstract:

Resumo: O presente trabalho tem como objetivo trazer uma reflexão sobre aspectos sócio-espaciais da globalização contemporânea à luz dos “Espaços de esperança” de David Harvey (2004) e “Por uma outra globalização”, de Milton Santos (2000), dialogando com quatro filmes que foram debatidos em aula no ensino da disciplina “Aspectos Sociológicos da Análise Geográfica” do Curso de Licenciatura em Geografia. Os filmes são: “Um Filme falado”, “Babel”, “Ensaio sobre a cegueira” e “Era o Hotel Cambridge”; entendendo o cinema como uma importante ferramenta audiovisual para a compreensão do espaço geográfico como uma construção histórico-social; e a globalização como reestruturação geográfica do capitalismo (HARVEY, 2004) que apresenta como fábula o que é vivido como perverso, mas poderia ser outra globalização (SANTOS, 2000). O trabalho termina reflexivamente trazendo um breve balanço das perspectivas da globalização na pandemia do COVID-19. Palavras-chave: Civilização Ocidental. Globalização. Unicidade da técnica. OUR GLOBALIZED WORLD TROUGH THE CINEMA TALKING WITH DAVID HARVEY AND MILTON SANTOS Abstract: This paper aims to bring a reflection about social-spacial aspects of contemporanean globalization through Spaces of hope, by David Harvey, and Toward another globalitation, by Milton Santos, in dialogue with four films debated in class during the teaching of “Sociologist Aspects on the Geographic Analysis”. The films are: “A talking picture”, “Babel”, Blindness and “The Cambridge squatter”; understanding cinema as an important audiovisual tool for the comprehension of geographic space as a social-historic construction, and the globalitation as geographic reestruturation of capitalism (Harvey) that shows as fable what is lived as perversion, but it could be “another globalitation” (Santos). The paper ends up bringing a brief balance and perperstives about globalitation in the pandemia of COVID-19. Keywords: Ocidental civilitation. Globalitation. Technique Unicity.
