This passage has aroused much debate about the possibility that Paul is here using Greek rather than Hebrew concepts. Some, like W. L. Knox, have contended that in order to appeal to Hellenistic hearers, the apostle, after his alleged failure at Athens, realised that he must move away from Hebrew categories. (Cf the chapter ‘The Failure of Eschatology’ in St Paul and the Church of the Gentiles.) Others maintain that Paul's language and concepts in this passage can all be explained from his Hebrew background; e.g. W. D. Davies in Paul and Rabbinic Judaism, ch. 10).

ZusammenfassungMit einer nördlichen Lage von Horonajim und einer Verbindung dieses Ortes mit der Daviddynastie (KAI 181:31) kann man einen historischen Kern der biblischen Texte bestimmen, die eine Beziehung Davids zu Moab behaupten. Die Dynastie Davids wäre somit von den Omriden im Ostjordanland eingesetzt worden, um einen Teil Moabs zu kontrollieren. Die biblische Erzählung hat die kriegerischen Erfolge des 9. Jh. v. Chr. mit David verbunden. Im Rutbuch könnte sich zudem die Tradition erhalten haben, dass die Daviddynastie irgendwann in Moab residierte und von dort wieder nach Jerusalem zurückgekehrt ist.

In Stamatis and Davies v. Competition and Markets Authority, Re Fourfront Group Ltd, the English High Court has for the first time considered aspects of the CMA's directors disqualification regime. The CMA regards the power to disqualify directors for competition law infringements as an important tool in its enforcement of competition law. The judgment in Stamatis and Davies v. CMA provides useful guidance on the approach of the English courts to applications by an individual subject to a competition disqualification undertaking for permission to act as a director, under section 17 of the Company Directors Disqualification Act 1986. This article looks at the way the court approached the principles that apply to applications in the non-competition context and highlighted some important considerations that are specific to the competition regime. This article also considers how the judgment may influence the manner in which the CMA approaches its use of its director disqualification powers in the future.

The outlines of the story are well known, and recently Dr Davies has filled in the political details, particularly concerning bishoprics: Martin V, having tried from the outset of his pontificate to persuade the Crown to repeal die Statutes, finally lost patience and, in 1427, suspended the Archbishop of Canterbury as legatus natus until Chichele pleaded the papal case before Council and Parliament.

AbstractThe doctrine of benefit and burden – an indirect method for enforcing the burden of positive freehold covenants – developed as an exception the strict Austerberry rule that the burden of positive covenants cannot bind successors directly at law. Three recent Court of Appeal cases (Davies v Jones; Wilkinson v Kerdene and Elwood v Goodman) confirm the continued existence and application of the doctrine but also reveal its deficiencies and limitations. This article explores the contemporary application of the doctrine, identifies its theoretical, historical and elemental frailty and, drawing on recent reform proposals of the Law Commission, highlights the case for reform. In so doing, this article argues that a vital theoretical issue has been overlooked in the reform debate: the numerus clausus principle.

Il presente articolo è stato dedicato all’analisi del brano di Ap 3, 3a, per raccogliere il messaggio della conversione espresso in questo versetto.I tre imperativi abbozzano il movimento completo di una vera conversione: “ricordati”, “osservala”, “pentiti” (v. 3a). La storia della conversione viene accennata dai tempi degli altri verbi: il perfetto (hai ricevuto) che esprime la permanenza attuale di un avvenimento passato, poi l’aoristo (ascoltasti) che invia a un momento unico del passato. Dall’indagine del contesto della lettera risulta che suscritti verbi alludano al battesimo della comunità. La chiesa deve avere la stessa premura, la stessa sollecitudine, come Gesù, di predicare il suo nome per essere riconosciuta davanti al Padre (v. 5b).

The paper addresses the issue of children’s play within a contemporary digital environment. Building on data collected through participant observation at an afterschool club for primary-school children, the article analyzes digitally-informed pretend play in which the plot and the rule-structure of the “Five Nights at Freddy’s” game have been employed as a resource. Andrew Burn’s scheme for the analysis of computer games’ adaptation to the playground and the sociolinguistic classifications of children’s speech patterns used in a pretend play serve as a conceptual framework for this study. An examination of the way children deploy media-references in their play provides evidence for children’s creative meaning-making and their ability to collectively rethink and adjust media-texts to the actual playground context, as well as to their own play goals and needs—while also relying on cultural resources of different kinds. More importantly, the structural borrowing from a digital game and its adaptation to a pretend play gives participants more opportunities to perform agentive acts than they have otherwise; both compared to the original digital game and “wholly original” pretend play. Agency is realized by using specific verbal structures (“you utterances”). These results contradict the adults’ common concerns about children being passive and not imaginative in the process of consuming digital games.

En aquest estudi de corpus hem volgut fer una primera aproximació a diversos aspectes de la transitivitat, entesa com a fenomen amb diversos vessants, en els textos corresponents a l’inici del català modern (segle XVII, amb un èmfasi especial en la primera meitat de segle). Hem tractat, concretament, el cas de diversos verbs que presenten un comportament vacil·lant entre l’ús transitiu i l’ús intransitiu, i ens hem acostat a aquest fenomen des del vessant del marcatge diferencial d’objecte, atès que aquest règim vacil·lant és un factor que pot crear confusió a l’hora d’analitzar l’extensió dels objectes directes introduïts per a (v. § 2). A continuació, i encara mantenint el marcatge diferencial d’objecte com a punt de referència, ens hem fixat en les diverses construccions que afavoreixen notablement l’ús d’aquest marcatge davant dels objectes directes (v. § 3). Per acabar, hem tractat de manera succinta altres aspectes interessants de la transitivitat en els textos dels inicis del català modern, com ara l’ús de verbs inergatius en patrons transitius que inclouen un objecte directe cognat o la causativització de verbs intransitius que expressen moviment (v. § 4).

Našemu strokovnemu izrazju ne namenjamo dovolj pozornosti. Mnoge, tudi zelo splošne in za naša stroka, tj. izobraževanje odraslih, temeljne izraze uporabljamo površna in nekritična, zato pogosta ista vsebina, pojme in njihov pomen izražamo z različnimi izrazi. Zahteve, da jih pravilno uporabljajo, je smiselno nasloviti taka na strokovnjake in delavce v izobraževanju odraslih, pedagogiki in andragogiki kakor tudi na druge strokovnjake in vse tiste (npr. novinarji), ki jih uporabljajo v javnosti. Neustrezna in neenotna raba strokovnih izrazov lahka povzroča zmeda in nesporazume, je pa tudi zrcala šibkosti stroke. Razvijanje terminologije je zahteven proces, a ključnih strokovnih izrazih pa se je treba dogovoriti in a predlaganih trditvah doseči, kolikor je mogoče, zadovoljivo soglasje.Nasemu strakavnemu izrazju ne namenjama davalj pazarnasti. Mnage, tudi zela splasne in zanasa straka, tj. izabrazevanje adraslih, temeljne izraze uparabljama pavrsna in nekriticna, zatapagasta ista vsebina, pajme in njihav pamen izrazama z razlicnimi izrazi. Zahteve, da jihpravilna uparabljaja, je smiselna naslaviti taka na strakavnjake in delavce v izabrazevanjuadraslih, pedagagiki in andragagiki kakar tudi na druge strakavnjake in vse tiste (npr.navinarji), ki jih uparabljaja v javnasti. Neustrezna in neenatna raba strakavnih izrazav lahkapavzraca zmeda in nesparazume, je pa tudi zrcala sibkasti stroke. Razvijanje terminalagije jezahteven praces, a kljucnih strokavnih izrazih pa se je treba dagavariti in a predlaganih rditvahdaseCi, kalikar je magace, zadavaljiva saglasje.

Introduction A good example of emergentism - interpreted by M. Siderits [1] as - Buddhist reductionism) is an excerpt from the dialogue between King Milinda[4] and the monk Nāgasena[5] about the self, which is part of the text close to the Abhidhamma tradition entitled "Milindapaha" (or "Questions of King Milinda"). The text was published by V. Trenckner in 1880 in [2] and translated into English by T.W. Rhys Davids [3] in the series "Sacred Books of the East". Furthermore, there is an English translation by I. B. Horner [4] and Bhikkhu Pesala [5] and into Russian by A.V. Paribok [6]. There are also German [7] and French translations [8; 9]. Yet the classical translation by Rhys Davids is currently largely obsolete. Paribok's translation into Russian is not convenient for practical use as it would need to be further translated into English, and this double translation, which is not very good from the point of view of the philological approach to the text. We have therefore decided to make our own, new translation of the passage from "Milindapaha", in which the dialogue about the self is being held.

Characterizations of [Formula: see text], including the atomic and molecular characterizations and the Lusin area function characterization associated to the Poisson semigroup, are also presented. As applications, the authors show that the Riesz transform ∇L-1/2 is bounded from Hω, L(ℝn) to L(ω). Moreover, if there exist q1, q2∈(0, ∞) such that q1<1<q2 and [ω(tq2)]q1 is a convex function on (0, ∞), then several characterizations of the Orlicz–Hardy space Hω, L(ℝn), in terms of the Lusin-area functions, the non-tangential maximal functions, the radial maximal functions, the atoms and the molecules, are obtained. All these results are new even when ω(t) = tp for all t ∈ (0, ∞) and p ∈ (0, 1).

Based on the observations that there exists an analogy between the Reissner–Nordström–Anti-de Sitter (RN–AdS) black holes and the van der Waals–Maxwell liquid-gas system, in which a correspondence of variables is (ϕ,q) ↔ (V,P), we study the Ruppeiner geometry, defined as Hessian matrix of black hole entropy with respect to the internal energy (not the mass) of black hole and electric potential (angular velocity), for the RN, Kerr and RN–AdS black holes. It is found that the geometry is curved and the scalar curvature goes to negative infinity at the Davies' phase transition point for the RN and Kerr black holes. Our result for the RN–AdS black holes is also in good agreement with the one about phase transition and its critical behavior in the literature.

This paper examines the refereeing procedures at the scientific weekly Nature during and after World War II. In 1939 former editorial assistants L. J. F. Brimble and A. J. V. Gale assumed a joint editorship of Nature . The Brimble–Gale era is now most famous for the editors' unsystematic approach to external refereeing. Although Brimble and Gale did sometimes consult external referees, papers submitted or recommended by scientists whom the pair trusted were often not sent out for further review. Their successor, John Maddox, would also print papers he admired without external refereeing. It was not until 1973 that editor David Davies made external peer review a requirement for publication in Nature. Nature 's example shows that as late as the 1960s a journal could be considered scientifically respectable even if its editors were known to eschew systematic external peer review.

BackgroundHemodialysis (HD) prescription significantly differs between pediatric and adult patients on maintenance HD, resulting in greater difference between prescribed and delivered HD dose.1,2 HD dose targets have formally not been evaluated for children, hence targets are mainly derived from adults (spKt/V >1.4; sp: single-pool model of urea distribution, K: urea clearance, t: duration of HD session, V: urea distribution volume). This analysis aimed to evaluate the relationship between delivered dialysis dose and survival in a large cohort of patients having started HD therapy in childhood.MethodsThis retrospective analysis included a cohort of patients < 30 years (y) on chronic HD treatment since childhood, having received thrice-weekly HD between 2004 and 2016 in outpatient DaVita dialysis centers. Survival while on HD (death from any cause) was investigated using Kaplan-Meier analysis stratified by age at start of HD (0–2, >2–6, >6–12, and >12–18 y), and three mean delivered dialysis dose levels (spKt/V < 1.4, 1.4–1.6, >1.6). Survival curves between subgroups were compared using the Log-rank test.Results1773 patients were included in the analysis, among n=34 having started HD at age of 0–2y, n=57 at >2–6y, n=244 at >6–12y, and n=1438 at >12–18y. Median follow-up on HD ranged between 1.5 (>2–6y) to 4.7 years (>6–12y) with maximal follow-up of 23 years. Death while on HD occurred in 1/34, 6/57, 26/244, and 101/1438 patients during recorded follow-up (p=0.075, n.s.). Patients with mean spKt/V < 1.4 had lower survival on HD than those with spKt/V >1.4–1.6 (p=0.019) and those with spKt/V >1.6 (p=0.035), with 10-year survival estimated to 75% (65.2–86.2%) versus 84.5% (78.5–90.9%) and 85.0% (80.8–89.5%), respectively.ConclusionsThis is the first study to report long term survival and its relationship with delivered HD dose in patients starting HD in childhood. Both interpretation and rectification continue to pose problems. Difficulties are compounded by blurring the boundary between the two. In Simic v New South Wales Land and Housing Corporation [2016] HCA 47, the High Court of Australia overturned the decisions of the lower courts which had held that performance bonds could be interpreted in a “loose” manner in order to correct a mistake. However, the documents could be rectified in order to reflect the actual intentions of the parties. This decision should be welcomed: the mistake was more appropriately corrected through the equitable jurisdiction than at common law. Significantly, the concurring judgments of French C.J. and Kiefel J. highlight that the law of rectification now seems to be different in Australia from the law in England. It is to be hoped that the English approach will soon be revisited (see further P. Davies, “Rectification versus Interpretation” [2016] C.L.J. 62).

Abstract The groundwater planning problems are often multiobjective. Due to conflicting objectives and non-linearity of the variables involved, several feasible solutions may have to be evolved rather than single optimal solution. In this study, the simulation model built on an Analytic Element Method (AEM) and the optimization model built on a Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm (NSGA-II) were coupled and applied to study a part of the Dore river catchment, France. The maximization of discharge, the minimization of pumping cost and the minimization of piping cost are the three objectives considered. 2105 non-dominated groundwater planning strategies were generated. K-Means cluster analysis was employed to classify the strategies, and clustering was performed for 3 to 25 clusters. A cluster validation technique, namely Davies–Bouldin (DB) index, was employed to find the optimal number of clusters of groundwater strategies which were found to be 20. Multicriterion Decision-Making (MCDM) techniques, namely VIKOR and TOPSIS, were developed to rank the 20 representative strategies. Both these decision-making techniques preferred representative strategy A5 (piping cost, pumping cost and discharge respectively of 880,000 Euro, 679,000 Euro and 1,263.1 m3/s). The sensitivity analysis of parameter v in VIKOR suggested that there were changes in ranking pattern for various values of v. However, the first position remained unchanged.

A study of the methods of speech transformation for common language units shows that any language creativity, even the most inventive and unusual, relies in its methods on the cumulative experience available in the arsenal of native speakers. The paremiological space of the language, which is a set of all proverbial units that reveal the most diverse types of relationships among themselves, also includes a number of units of other levels — typical syntactic and logical structures, stable binomials that serve as the basis of proverbs, proverbial fragments with semantics assigned to them, and generalized ideas implemented by several units of the language of different lexical content and grammatical model. The language game, which embraced the sphere of paremias in the post-Soviet era of “carnivalizing” the language, manifested itself in the formation of new units according to existing models (Luchshe dlinnaia zhivaja ochered’, chem korotkaia avtomatnaia), in contaminations (Baba s vozu — volki syty), in the replication of countless versions of occasional endings for ordinary paremias (Ne pliui v kolodets — prigoditsia pliunut’; … vylezet — ne prokormish’), semantic deciphers (Deti tsvety zhizni, no ne nado davat’ im raspuskat’sia), etc. The focus of article is the sphere of language transformations of an expression with structure that allows for varied deviations from the usual form, for example the paremia Chem dal’she v les, tem bol’she drov according to the dictionary “Anti-proverbs of the Russian people” (2005) and Internet materials. Examples of the intentional deconstruction of habitual paremias show that destruction does not occur, since the proverbial form and logical-syntactic model of a common proverb appears in new units and even part of the neologism continues to be the bearer of its meaning, enriched with occasional semantic additions.

Abstract Background Women of all ages and elderly patients of both genders comprise an increasing proportion of the haemodialysis population. Worldwide, significant differences in practice patterns and treatment results exist between genders and among younger versus older patients. Although efforts to mitigate sex-based differences have been attempted, significant disparities still exist. Methods This retrospective cohort study included all 1247 prevalent haemodialysis patients in DaVita units in Portugal (five dialysis centres, n = 730) and Poland (seven centres, n = 517). Demographic data, dialysis practice patterns, vascular access prevalence and the achievement of a variety of Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) treatment targets were evaluated in relation to gender and age groups. Results Body weight and the prescribed dialysis blood flow rate were lower in women (P &lt; 0.001), whereas treated blood volume per kilogram per session was higher (P &lt; 0.01), resulting in higher single-pool Kt/V in women than in men (P &lt; 0.001). Haemoglobin was significantly higher in men (P = 0.01), but the proportion of patients within target range (10–12 g/dL) was similar. Men more often had an arteriovenous fistula than women (80% versus 73%; P &lt; 0.01) with a similar percentage of central venous catheters. There were no gender-specific differences in terms of dialysis adequacy, anaemia parameters or mineral and bone disorder parameters, or in the attainment of KDIGO targets between women and men &gt;80 years of age. Conclusions This large, multicentre real-world analysis indicates that haemodialysis practices and treatment targets are similar for women and men, including the most elderly, in DaVita haemodialysis clinics in Europe.

ABSTRACT Mechanisms of resistance were studied in 22 macrolide-resistant mutants selected in vitro from 5 parental strains of macrolide-susceptible Streptococcus pneumoniae by serial passage in various macrolides (T. A. Davies, B. E. Dewasse, M. R. Jacobs, and P. C. Appelbaum, Antimicrob. Agents Chemother., 44:414–417, 2000). Portions of genes encoding ribosomal proteins L22 and L4 and 23S rRNA (domains II and V) were amplified by PCR and analyzed by single-strand conformational polymorphism analysis to screen for mutations. The DNA sequences of amplicons from mutants that differed from those of parental strains by their electrophoretic migration profiles were determined. In six mutants, point mutations were detected in the L22 gene (G95D, P99Q, A93E, P91S, and G83E). The only mutant selected by telithromycin (for which the MIC increased from 0.008 to 0.25 μg/ml) contained a combination of three mutations in the L22 gene (A93E, P91S, and G83E). L22 mutations were combined with an L4 mutation (G71R) in one strain and with a 23S rRNA mutation (C2611A) in another strain. Nine other strains selected by various macrolides had A2058G (n = 1), A2058U (n = 2), A2059G (n = 1), C2610U (n = 1), and C2611U (n = 4) mutations (Escherichia coli numbering) in domain V of 23S rRNA. One mutant selected by clarithromycin and resistant to all macrolides tested (MIC, >32 μg/ml) and telithromycin (MIC, 4 μg/ml) had a single base deletion (A752) in domain II. In six remaining mutants, no mutations in L22, L4, or 23S rRNA could be detected.

Abstract Introduction: Acalabrutinib (A) and ibrutinib (I) are both highly effective Bruton tyrosine kinase inhibitors (BTKi) approved for the treatment of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and given as continuous treatments until disease progression or unacceptable toxicity. Venetoclax is a BH3 mimetic compound and B-cell lymphoma-2 inhibitor prescribed in combination with obinutuzumab (V+O) for a fixed (12-cycle) duration in treatment-naïve CLL patients. Although the ELEVATE-RR study demonstrated an improved safety profile of A compared with I in a head-to-head clinical trial, this study did not include treatment-naïve CLL patients (Byrd et al. J Clin Oncol. 2021). This MAIC builds upon the published analysis by Davids et al (Leuk Lymphoma. 2021) in treatment-naïve patients with CLL (which demonstrated a favorable safety profile for A-based therapy compared with other targeted therapies without compromising efficacy) by including longer follow-up data for A and the comparators. Methods: Individual patient data for A ± obinutuzumab (A+O) from ELEVATE-TN (47 months median follow-up) (Sharman et al. ASCO 2021) were weighted to match the aggregate baseline characteristics of the I monotherapy arm from the ALLIANCE trial (Woyach et al. NEJM. 2018) (I + rituximab was not included as this treatment is not approved for CLL) and the V+O arm from the CLL-14 trial (Al-Sawaf et al. Lancet Oncol 2020). These baseline characteristics, TP53 mutation, serum β 2 microglobulin, ECOG, IGHV status, del(11q), CrCl, Rai stage or CLL-IPI, are potential prognostic variables (PV). Pseudo-individual patient data were generated from the digitized Kaplan-Meier curves published in the aforementioned comparator trials. An unanchored MAIC was conducted to adjust for these PVs between trials. The PVs selected were based on literature, clinical judgement, and demonstrated statistically significant association with progression-free survival (PFS) in univariate and multivariate regression analysis (Ahn et al. J Clin Oncol. 2020; Eichorst and Hallek. Hematol Am Soc Hematol Educ Prog. 2016). After matching, a weighted Cox proportional hazard model was used to analyze PFS and overall survival (OS) while a weighted logistic regression model was used for comparative safety analysis (grade ≥3 adverse events [AEs]). Two-sided p&lt;0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: This MAIC included 47-month data from ELEVATE-TN, 38-month data from ALLIANCE, and 40-month data from CLL-14 as opposed to 28-month data from ELEVATE-TN, 29-month data from RESONATE-2, and 29-month data from CLL-14 included in the previously published analysis. In the A vs I comparison, the PFS (hazard ratio [HR] 0.83 [95% CI 0.50, 1.37]) and OS (HR 0.69 [95% CI 0.37, 1.29]) numerically favored A but the difference was not significant. The A vs V+O comparison did not show significant differences in PFS (HR 0.96 [95% CI 0.56, 1.65] and OS (HR 0.99 [95% CI 0.51, 1.91]). For A+O vs I, significant differences in PFS (HR 0.48 [95% CI 0.27, 0.88]) and OS (HR 0.41 [95% CI 0.18, 0.91]) were observed. Similarly, for A+O vs V+O, significant differences were observed for PFS (HR 0.38 [95% CI 0.20, 0.73]) and OS (HR 0.43 [95% CI 0.19, 0.99]). Significant differences in rate of grade ≥3 AEs in favor of A and A+O were observed vs I for atrial fibrillation, hypertension, decreased neutrophil count, and decreased platelet count. Compared with V+O, patients treated with A had significantly lower rates of febrile neutropenia, leukopenia, neutropenia, thrombocytopenia, non-melanoma skin cancer, and secondary primary malignancies, excluding non-melanoma skin cancer. For A+O vs V+O, significantly lower rates of infusion-related reaction, neutropenia, and non-melanoma skin cancer were observed among patients treated with A+O. Conclusions: Based on these MAIC results, A and A+O are associated with a favorable safety profile vs both I and V+O while, with longer follow-up, these MAIC results demonstrate that A+O is associated with a significant efficacy benefit vs both I and V+O. A limitation of this MAIC is not including all potential PVs as a trade-off to conserve the effective sample size. Our findings are consistent with the results of ELEVATE-RR comparing A with I in the relapsed population and also provide insight into comparisons of A-based therapy with V+O as we await more definitive prospective data on this question from a phase 3 trial. - In its Order of 15 October 2008, rendered in the case concerning Application of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (Georgia v. Russian Federation), the International Court of Justice indicated provisional measures directing both Parties, inter alia, to ensure that no action of racial discrimination be taken against the persons living in the Georgian territory of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. The Court's Order deals with interesting issues concerning the extraterritorial application of the Convention on Racial Discrimination, the interpretation of the compromissory clause embodied in Article 22 of the Convention and the relationship between human rights law and humanitarian law. The most debated issue, however, revolved around the question as to whether there existed a dispute between the Parties as to the interpretation and application of the Convention. While Georgia may have used its unilateral application for political purposes which are connected to the broader conflict following Russian military intervention of August 2008, it is argued that the Court's decision on the existence prima facie of a dispute and of its jurisdiction appears to be a sound one.

Let φ : X × [0;∞) → [0;∞) be a function such that φ (x;·) is an Orlicz function, φ(·;t) ∊ A∞(X) (the class of uniformly Muckenhoupt weights), its uniformly critical upper type index l(φ) ∊ (0;1] and φ(·; t) satisfies the uniformly reverse Hölder inequality of order (qL/l(φ))′, where (qL/l(φ))′ denotes the conjugate exponent of qL/l(φ). In this paper, the authors introduce a Musielak-Orlicz-Hardy space Hφ;L(X), via the Lusin-area function associated with L, and establish its molecular characterization. In particular, when L is nonnegative self-adjoint and satisfies the Davies-Gaffney estimates, the atomic characterization of Hφ,L(X) is also obtained. Furthermore, a sufficient condition for the equivalence between Hφ,L(ℝn) and the classical Musielak-Orlicz-Hardy space Hv(ℝn) is given. ABSTRACT The 72 Escherichia coli strains of the ECOR collection were examined for resistance to 10 different antimicrobial agents including ampicillin, tetracycline, mercury, trimethoprim, and sulfonamides. Eighteen strains were resistant to at least one of the antibiotics tested, and nearly 20% (14 of 72) were resistant to two or more. Several of the resistance determinants were shown to be carried on conjugative elements. The collection was screened for the presence of the three classes of integrons and for the sul1 gene, which is generally associated with class 1 integrons. The four strains found to carry a class 1 integron also had Tn21-encoded mercury resistance. One of the integrons encoded a novel streptomycin resistance gene, aadA7, with an attC site (or 59-base element) nearly identical to the attC site associated with the qacF gene cassette found in In40 (M.-C. Ploy, P. Courvalin, and T. Lambert, Antimicrob. Agents Chemother. 42:2557–2563, 1998). The conservation of associated attCsites among unrelated resistance cassettes is similar to arrangements found in the Vibrio cholerae superintegrons (D. Mazel, B. Dychinco, V. A. Webb, and J. Davies, Science 280:605–608, 1998) and supports the hypothesis that resistance cassettes are picked up from superintegron pools and independently assembled from unrelated genes and related attC sites.
