Abstract:
This passage has aroused much debate about the possibility that Paul is here using Greek rather than Hebrew concepts. Some, like W. L. Knox, have contended that in order to appeal to Hellenistic hearers, the apostle, after his alleged failure at Athens, realised that he must move away from Hebrew categories. (Cf the chapter ‘The Failure of Eschatology’ in St Paul and the Church of the Gentiles.) Others maintain that Paul's language and concepts in this passage can all be explained from his Hebrew background; e.g. W. D. Davies in Paul and Rabbinic Judaism, ch. 10).

Abstract:
In Stamatis and Davies v. Competition and Markets Authority, Re Fourfront Group Ltd, the English High Court has for the first time considered aspects of the CMA's directors disqualification regime. The CMA regards the power to disqualify directors for competition law infringements as an important tool in its enforcement of competition law. The judgment in Stamatis and Davies v. CMA provides useful guidance on the approach of the English courts to applications by an individual subject to a competition disqualification undertaking for permission to act as a director, under section 17 of the Company Directors Disqualification Act 1986. This article looks at the way the court approached the principles that apply to applications in the non-competition context and highlighted some important considerations that are specific to the competition regime. This article also considers how the judgment may influence the manner in which the CMA approaches its use of its director disqualification powers in the future.

In the reign of Pope Martin V relations between the papacy and the English Crown were dominated by the struggle of the papacy to obtain the repeal of the Statutes against Provisors. The outlines of the story are well known, and recently Dr Davies has filled in the political details, particularly concerning bishoprics: Martin V, having tried from the outset of his pontificate to persuade the Crown to repeal die Statutes, finally lost patience and, in 1427, suspended the Archbishop of Canterbury as legatus natus until Chichele pleaded the papal case before Council and Parliament.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the involvement of the Supreme Court of the United States in litigation relating to partisan gerrymandering, paying particular attention to a case that attempted to apply the previously established Davis v. Bandemer precedent to congressional elections: Vieth v. Jubelirer. It begins with an overview of Badham v. Eu, which arose from the redrawing of California's congressional districts in the aftermath of the 1980 census and its most significant holding: that the Bandemer precedent, which had initially been applied to the drawing of state legislative districts only, also extends to the drawing of congressional districts. The chapter then considers the circumstances surrounding the Vieth case, in which the alleged political gerrymander concerned the reapportionment plan for the congressional districts in the state of Pennsylvania rather than those for the state assembly. It also analyzes the Supreme Court's 2004 decision in Vieth, focusing on Justice Antonin Scalia's plurality opinion and Justice Anthony Kennedy's concurring opinion.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract In this paper we examine the necessary versus self-consistent consequences of a slender aspect ratio on viscoelastic free surface jet flows. As in Schultz & Davis (1982), the equations of the 3-D free surface jet problem are nondimensionalized with presumed disparate length scales in the transverse and axial directions, and a perturbation theory for the slender jet is obtained by positing an expansion in the slenderness parameter (i.e. the ratio ε of these scales). A different perturbation problem ensues for each regime of free jet behavior. We exhibit three regimes, one in which the slenderness scaling of the 3-D free surface jet problem forces a separation-of-variables (s-o-v) structure of the solution (that is, the radial coordinate explicitly factors out at each order in ε), another in which the s-o-v structure is not forced but is a solution, and a third in which the s-o-v structure is not a solution. These three regimes are prototypes for general filament behavior: of the many possible regimes, many are of the first type (the separation of variables structure is unique), many more are of the second type (the separation of variables solution exists but cannot be shown to be unique), and the rest are of the third type (if a slender solution exists it does not have a s-o-v structure).

Abstract:
Cross-sectional thin film micro-particle image velocimetry (cTFMPIV) analysis has been performed for air-water two-phase flow in a 19.05 mm horizontal duct. Images were captured by introducing a light sheet from a Nd:YAG laser into the flow, with the fluorescent emissions from three micron particles captured by a CCD camera behind a microscope objective and red filter. These images were grouped into pairs and digitally enhanced to isolate particle traces using commercial image processing software. Image pairs were collected for five air flow rates at each of four water flow rates and separated into base film and wave zones for PIV analysis. Using DaVis 7.1 (LaVision GmbH), vector maps were obtained for each pair. Less than 2% of the image pairs were removed due to clearly spurious vectors, while the appropriate zone for less than 8% of the image pairs could not be determined These pairs were grouped into a third batch. The vector maps were analyzed to calculate velocity profiles and turbulence (fluctuation) statistics in terms of wall coordinates. These statistics included intensities and Reynolds stresses. The base film shows laminar behavior beyond what would be expected from the universal velocity profile. The wave zone displays significantly different behavior and appears to reach an asymptote rapidly. Calculation of fluctuation intensities indicates a maximum within the wave zone along the gas-liquid interface, while the distribution of radial fluctuations in the base film and axial turbulence in all zones is approximately uniform. Calculation of the u′v′ shear Reynolds stress suggests that it has a negative value.

Abstract:
Abstract A weather data collection study is currently conducted using a renewable energy training system. The system is composed of a LabVolt trainer, two sun tracking photovoltaic solar panels and a small wind turbine. The LabVolt training system is located in one of the McCoy School of Engineering laboratories, the solar panels and the wind turbine are located in the neighborhood of the Engineering building at Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas. A set of meteorological data collecting outdoor sensors to monitor the impact of weather conditions on the power generation of the sun-tracking photovoltaic solar panels and the wind turbine have been installed on the building roof. Weather parameters such as atmospheric temperature, pressure, humidity, and rainfall are monitored using a Davis Vantage Pro 2 data collecting system. A number of LabVIEW data acquisition cards and signal processing modules are used to monitor the sun-tracking photovoltaic solar panels’ output voltage, the wind turbine output voltage, the atmospheric temperature, the solar irradiance, and the wind direction, speed, and RPM. A voltage divider has been built to step down the 90V DC voltage produced by the solar panels to 12V DC voltage required for the trainer electrical circuits. A LabVIEW data processing program is used to create instantaneous graphic displays of the collected data on a monitoring screen. The LabVolt trainer is equipped with two charge controller electronic devices, one is used for the sun tracking photovoltaic solar panels, and one is used for the wind turbine. They are used to control the flow of electrical energy through a set of electrical loading devices and a set of storages batteries. Additionally, the LabVolt trainer is equipped with two kilowatt-hour-meters counting the electrical energy consumed by the electrical loads. The trainer is also equipped with two inverters transforming the 12 V DC voltage collected from both energy producing devices to 120 V that can be used by the electrical loading devices. A brief description of all used electronic components and devices is provided in the paper, as well a detailed experiment set-up with a procedure to run them. The project has been divided into three consecutive phases. The first phase dealt with connecting the solar panels, wind turbine, and data collecting sensors to the LabVIEW data acquisition software. The second phase is currently dealing with setting up the trainer solar and wind electricity providing circuits. In the third upcoming phase, it is expected that the data collected by the sensors will be gradually archived using Excel files and analyzed for weather data correlation purposes. It is also expected that the training system will be used to teach upcoming mechanical engineering students about how to set up an independent renewable energy system and the necessary equipment required to run it.

Abstract:
The increasing advance of the new technologies applied in the retail market, make it common to sell products without the personal contact between seller and buyer, being the registration and payment of the products made in electronic equipment of self-checkout. The large-scale use of these devices forces the consumer to participate in the service process, which was previously done through interaction with the company's employees. The user of the self-checkout system thus performs all the steps of the purchase, from weighing the products, registering them and making the payment. This is seen as a partial employee, whose participation or performance in providing services can be used by the company to improve the quality of its operations (KELLEY, et al 1993). However this participation does not always satisfy the user, and may cause negative experiences related to usability failures. This article presents the results of the evaluation by the users of the self-checkout system. The data were collected in Portugal through a questionnaire to 400 users. The study analyzes the degree of satisfaction regarding the quality and usability of the system, the degree of motivation for its adoption, as well as the profile of the users. Analysis of the sample data reveals that users have basic or higher education and use new technologies very often. They also have a high domain of the system and an easy learning of its use. The reason for using self-checkout instead of the traditional checkout is mainly due to "queues at checkout with operator" and "at the small volume of products". In general, the sample reveals a high degree of satisfaction with the service and with quality, however, in comparative terms, self-checkout is not considered better than operator checkout. The evaluation of the interaction with the self-checkout was classified according to twenty-six attributes of the system. The analysis identifies five groups with similar characteristics, of which two have low scores. "Cancellation of registered articles", "search for articles without a bar code", "manual registration", "bagging area", "error messages", "weight sensor" and “invoice request "are seven critical attributes of the system. The results indicate that the usability analysis oriented to the self-checkout service can be determinant for the user-system interaction. The implications of empirical findings are discussed together with guidelines for future research. Keywords: Interaction Design, Self service, Self-checkout, User evaluation, UsabilityReferencias ABRAHÃO, J., et al (2013).
