Abstract:
Using cross-cultural ethnographic and archaeological analogy, this paper offers a new interpretation for a specific societal attribute represented on the Iron Age stelae of Daunia, arguing that the designs on the forearms of the female stelae do not represent gloves but are instead tattoos. By questioning a single, long-held, belief about the stelae, it is hoped to highlight a very important principle of method: the need to identify and investigate the socio-cultural context of an image or artefact. For too long the Daunian stelae have been looked at through Hellenized eyes. Unlike other Italic societies of this period, the Daunians appear to have remained reasonably unaffected by Greek and wider Mediterranean influence, suggesting the Iron Age inhabitants of the region retained a strong ethnic identity. With limited evidence of their social and religious life deriving from other sources, any hope of understanding these people properly relies on a correct reading of their stelae, which can only be achieved by firmly placing these monuments within an Adriatic milieu.

Abstract:
Abstract. Detailed and accurate geomorphological historical landslide inventory maps are an invaluable source of information for many research topics and applications. Their systematic preparation worldwide has been advised by many researchers as it may foster our knowledge on landslides, their spatial and temporal distribution, their potential interaction with the built environment, their contribution to landscape dynamics, and their response to climate change in the past. Due to the extreme variability of the morphological and radiometric elements that can reveal historical landslides, geomorphological historical landslide inventory maps are produced by expert interpretation, which makes it a time-consuming and expensive process, which often discourages wide-area mapping activities. In this paper we present a new geomorphological historical landslide inventory map for a 1460 km2 area in the Daunia Apennines, the north-western sector of the Apulia (Puglia) region, in southern Italy. The inventory contains 17 437 landslides classified according to relative age, type of movement, and estimated depth. Landslides were mapped according to rigorous and reproducible criteria applied by two teams of expert photo interpreters to two sets of stereoscopic aerial photographs taken in 1954/55 and 2003. The dataset consists of a digital archive publicly available at https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.942427 (Cardinali et al., 2022).

Abstract:
Abstract. This study focuses on landslide susceptibility mapping in the Daunia area (Apulian Apennines, Italy) and achieves this by using a multivariate statistical method and data processing in a Geographical Information System (GIS). The Logistic Regression (hereafter LR) method was chosen to produce a susceptibility map over an area of 130 000 ha where small settlements are historically threatened by landslide phenomena. By means of LR analysis, the tendency to landslide occurrences was, therefore, assessed by relating a landslide inventory (dependent variable) to a series of causal factors (independent variables) which were managed in the GIS, while the statistical analyses were performed by means of the SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) software. The LR analysis produced a reliable susceptibility map of the investigated area and the probability level of landslide occurrence was ranked in four classes. The overall performance achieved by the LR analysis was assessed by local comparison between the expected susceptibility and an independent dataset extrapolated from the landslide inventory. Of the samples classified as susceptible to landslide occurrences, 85% correspond to areas where landslide phenomena have actually occurred. In addition, the consideration of the regression coefficients provided by the analysis demonstrated that a major role is played by the "land cover" and "lithology" causal factors in determining the occurrence and distribution of landslide phenomena in the Apulian Apennines.

Abstract:
Similar to many inner areas of Southern Europe, the Daunia Apennines are affected by widespread landsliding, often consisting of slow, deep-seated movements. Recurrent acceleration of these landslides causes damage to buildings and infrastructures, severely biasing the socio-economic development of the region. Most landslides in the area of study occur within clayey units of turbiditic flysch formations, often severely disturbed by tectonic thrust and previous landsliding. The Faeto Flysch (FAE) is one of the most widespread turbiditic formations in the Daunia Apennines and is representative of the tectonised geological formations involved in slope failure. This work, by examining the landslide processes occurring at four pilot sites, aims at connecting the observed mechanisms to the geo-hydro-mechanical setup of FAE in the slopes. It is found that the soil portion of FAE consists of highly plastic clays, resulting in low intrinsic shear strength, and hence controls the initiation and progression of failure in the slopes, as such representing an internal predisposing factor to landsliding. In addition, the presence of fractured rock strata confers a high permeability at the slope scale, with respect to that of the soil matrix. This results in severe piezometric levels in the slope, which represent another internal predisposing factor to failure, and in the ability to induce significant seasonal pore water pressure oscillations down to great depths, connected to rainfall infiltration, thus triggering the recurrent acceleration of the landslides.

Abstract:
This article approaches the agency of displaced people through material evidence from the distant past. It seeks to construct a narrative of displacement where the key players include human as well as non-human agents—namely, the environment into which people move, and the socio-political and environmental context of displacement. Our case-study from ancient Italy involves potentially marginalized people who moved into agriculturally challenging lands in Daunia (one of the most drought-prone areas of the Mediterranean) during the Roman conquest (late fourth-early second centuries BCE). We discuss how the interplay between socio-political and environmental forces may have shaped the agency of subaltern social groups on the move, and the outcomes of this process. Ultimately, this analysis can contribute towards a framework for the archaeological study of marginality and mobility/displacement—while addressing potential limitations in evidence and methods.

Norman, Camilla. "The Iron Age Stelae of Daunia (Italy)." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/9809.

Abstract:
The anthropomorphic stelae of Iron Age Daunia are a phenomenon not only in the archaeological record of Italy, but for pre- and proto-historic populations of the Mediterranean in general. Their complexity, rich imagery, large number, and very small spread across time and place render them unique. Yet they remain at the fringe of archaeological awareness and are not well known outside their place of manufacture. This thesis aims to redress that situation, both by reviewing past scholarship on the stelae and offering a fresh, in-depth, objective analysis of the monuments. By looking at the corpus in its entirety and systematically, attribute by attribute, it is possible to elucidate a great deal more than we currently know not only about the stelae but about their makers. The Iron Age Daunians stood (metaphorically and literally) between the Etruscans, Samnites, Illyrians, and Greek colonists and indigenous populations of Magna Grecia, but are not as well regarded or understood as those populations. The extant Daunian material culture is otherwise relatively unsophisticated, and does not suggest substantial social stratification. The stelae not only give pause to rethink this position, but provide the only self-narrative we have for this fascinating society. Because many of the stelae are female, they also offer a valuable insight into proto-historic gender constructs of the region.

Farley, Esme Kila. "Immunological tolerance in the amphibian Xenopus laevis (Daudin)." Thesis, University of Plymouth, 1987. http://hdl.handle.net/10026.1/2344.

Abstract:
Observation of some of the phenomena of tolerance to soluble protein antigens and allogeneic tissue transplants in Xenopus laevis has formed the framework of the present study. The method of larval induction of high-zone tolerance used in this laboratory has been confirmed and further analysed. Larvae treated with high doses of Human-γ-globulin (HGG) were unable to produce anti-HGG antibody after challenge. The proliferative response demonstrated in the spleens of tolerant toadlets 21 days after challenge was, however, of similar magnitude to that in normally responding animals. Adoptive transfer of high-zone tolerance specific to HGG was demonstrated by intravenous inoculation of tolerant histocompatible splenocytes simultaneously with an antigenic challenge via the dorsal lymph sac. This is indicative of the active involvement of a suppressor T-cell population. The induction of high-zone tolerance in X. laevis results in changes in spleen cell populations as demonstrated by buoyant density gradient separation. Spleen cell sub-populations taken from the separated layers were not, however, effective in the adoptive transfer of tolerance. A normal lymphocyte transfer reaction was observed in X. laevis to show a number of characteristics seen in the mammalian reaction. The use of mitomycin-C treated donor cells and early thymectomized hosts has demonstrated that the phenomenon is composed of donor and host components which are largely distinct from each other. Implantation of allogeneic larval spleens resulted in the induction of transplantation tolerance or impaired rejection in a significant proportion of skin grafted toadlets in which both the donor and host larvae were up to and including stage 51 at the time of transplantation. The implication of these results is that immunomaturity of the donor and host is important in the induction of transplantation tolerance but that other factors must also be involved.

Hentges, Thomas William. "Are gopher tortosies (Gopherus polyphemus Daudin) comapatible with cows?" Scholar Commons, 2014. https://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/5238.

Abstract:
Many Gopher Tortoise populations are in steep decline throughout Florida, and various measures have been attempted to curb the trend. One such measure is to relocate tortoises to protected recipient sites on private lands. The majority of private lands in Florida are used for cattle, however, production and the effect of cattle production on tortoises is not known. Here, I tested six parameters of tortoise behavior by monitoring 1403 gopher tortoises released at the Barthle Brothers Ranch, Pasco County Florida, between August 2009 and December 2012. The parameters tested were (1) burrow density, (2) burrow spacing, (3) burrow relocation, (4) body condition, (5) individual growth rate, and (6) recruitment (addition of young to the population). I used telemetry techniques to observe movement and burrow placement as it related to cattle activity and burrow impacts, and collected morphological data to determine changes in body condition and growth. I used burrow surveys and analyzed movement patterns to interpret the propensity for tortoises to place burrows where cattle may or may not congregate. Lastly, I investigated recruitment of juveniles into the population and followed the mortality of resident and relocated tortoises in all treatment plots. I found that burrow density, distance moved when relocating to new burrows, and avoidance of cattle were not distinguishably different within or between the plots. Burrow relocation, however, was more frequent outside the exclosures. The change in body condition did not differ between males and female or resident and relocated individuals. Females within the exclosure did not grow at a rate different than those outside the exclosure although translocated females grew faster than resident females. Densities of non-adult burrows inside the exclosures were not different then densities outside the exclosure. Eleven percent of tortoises relocated to the ranch died during the project. Although we have no evidence that cattle and tortoise cannot successfully coexist, a number of circumstances prevented rigorous testing of our hypotheses, predominately the failure of the silt fence used to enclose the treatment plots. Using a trespass-proof perimeter fence would allow a better assessment of the actual interaction between the cattle and tortoises and may shed new light on the lack of recruitment and the decline of juvenile tortoises relocated to the ranch. Without recruitment of individuals back into a population, or the persistent of reproducing adults within the population, any efforts to curb the downward trend in gopher tortoise numbers by relocating tortoises to actively grazed pasture is futile.

The genus Lachesis Daudin, 1803 was split-up in six populations in order to evaluate the taxonomic status and the phylogenetic relationships among such taxa. Characters of external morphology and hemipenis were used. The Central American species L. melanocephala and L. stenophrys are recognized as distinct species and had your taxonomic status maintained. The South American species L. muta is recognized as monotypic, without further differentiation in subspecies, based on the results obtained through the phylogenetic and statistical analysis. Such results confirm the independence of the Central American lineages in relation to the South American and are congruent with other studies based on molecular data to infer phylogenetic relationships in Lachesis.

Abstract:
Xenopus laevis injected with sheep erythrocytes (SRBC) at Stage 48 of Nieuwkoop and Faber (1967) showed no evidence of tolerance induction as a result of early exposure to antigen. These experiments showed that priming during the larval stages of development (at Stages 48 and 54 or at Stage 56) led to a positive anamnestic response when the animals were challenged after metamorphosis as toadlets. It was not, however, possible to demonstrate enhanced secondary responses within the larval period itself. The effect of the alkylating agent, cyclophosphamide on the generation of immunological memory varies at different stages of development. In the larva, positive memory cells generated at the time of priming may be the population most affected by the drug, whereas in adults the evidence suggests that suppressor cells may have been eliminated by the cyclophosphamide treatment. Cyclophosphamide had no tolerogenic effect when administered with a primary injection of SRBC even at larval Stage 48. It is concluded that, although transplantation tolerance to allografts has been demonstrated in Xenopus laevis, these free-living larvae are not vulnerable to tolerance induction by xenogeneic antigens. On the contrary, both HGG (human gamma globulin) and SRBC induce positive anamnesis in the larva which can be expressed post-metamorphosis. Tolerance was only observed in the present experiments to soluble antigen (HGG) injected in high doses, such as could induce tolerance in the adult as well as in tadpoles. In contrast to their ability to react to xenogeneic antigens with the induction of positive memory, larvae injected with live allogeneic cells (adult blood leucocytes) failed to produce any anamnestic response when challenged as toadlets. These cells, injected by various routes into larvae from Stage 47 to Stage 57 induced neither tolerance nor positive memory. The recipients responded in a primary manner both in mixed leucocyte reactions and to skin grafts.

The objective of the present work was to evaluate the physiologic quality of carrot seeds, cilantro and parsley, associated with Alternaria alternata and A. dauci under two inoculation methods, conidial suspension and restriction hidric. The isolated of A. dauci and A. alternata were obtained, respectively, of carrot plants with symptom of the disease and of seeds of each one of the species, submitted to an initial test of sanity (Blotter Test). The inoculation treatments for suspension consisted in: testifies (distilled water and sterilized), conidial suspension of A. alternata, conidial suspension of A. dauci and conidial suspension of both species (A. alternata + A. dauci). Para restriction hidric: PDA + manitol (testifies); PDA + manitol + A. alternata; PDA + manitol + A. dauci; PDA + manitol + A.alternata + A.dauci. The physiologic quality of the seeds was evaluated by a group of tests accomplished in controlled conditions of laboratory and green house. The quality of carrot seeds, cilantro and parsley is influence by the association with it would Alternaria alternata and A. dauci. The use of the inoculation of seeds through the conidial suspension is efficient in the contamination of carrot seeds for A. alternata and A. dauci. The use of the manitol, as a restritor hidric, is effective for the obtaining of seeds infected by A. dauci in the culture of the parsley. Already for cilantro seeds, both methods demonstrated satisfactory levels of infection.
Para restrição hídrica: BDA + manitol (tratamento testemunha); BDA + manitol + A. alternata; BDA + manitol + A. dauci; BDA + manitol + A.alternata + A.dauci.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Heritability the tolerance to Alternaria dauci and Fusarium oxysporum in prospective F1-hybrids of car-rot has been discussed in the paper. As QTLs isn’t reliable enough for the determination of tolerance heritability in F1-hybrid progenies, authors used traditional methods of inoculation applying step-by-step at every stage of plant’s development. Carrot lines have been evaluated carefully at different types of infection backgrounds, tol-erant lines and lines with weak sensitivity have been selected for crossings. F1-hybrids have been obtained and evaluated at the provocative infection background. Using dispersion analysis, the authors show, that tolerance to Alternaria dauci and Fusarium oxysporum has been inherited by the paternal type.
