CAMESASCA, GLORIA. "Lettere di ser Lapo Mazzei a Francesco Datini (1390 - 1399)." Doctoral thesis, Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10280/1862.
Full textThe notary Lapo Mazzei (1350-1412) was a friend and a correspondent of the merchant of Prato Francesco Datini (1335 about-1410). Mazzei's letters written to Datini, published by Cesare Guasti in 1880, are an important source because they return a significant cross-section of life and personal relations of a merchant and a notary lived in Tuscany at the end of the fourteenth century. This work is the critical edition of Mazzei's letters (1390-1399) equipped with a commentary. The introductory chapters face these subjects: Mazzei and Datini's biographies, letters' topics and structure and their graphic, linguistic and stylistic analysis. At the end of the work there are the indexes of personal names, place names, remarkable things and archival sources.

Full textAs pronouns that go beyond the codification of participants in an event denoted by a verb, interactional datives encode the interlocutors of an interaction in the speech event. The main goal of this thesis is to describe the semantic-pragmatic processes involved in the use of Galician interactional datives. To do so, I have employed the works of Jakobson (1936), Janda (1988, 1993), Langacker (1987, 2008), Wierzbicka (1988), among others, in order to describe the process of conceptualizing an event marked by the dative case, to define the prototype associated with the dative case and to describe some of its semantic extensions, based on the Cognitive Grammar framework (Langacker, 1987, 1991, 2008), Prototype Theory (Rosch, 1973, 1978, 1999), and discussions on semantic extensions through metaphor and metonymy (Lakoff, 1897, Lakoff and Johnson 1980, Evans and Green, 2006). The data under analysis are from TMILG Medieval Treasury Computerized of Galician Language and TILG Treasury Computerized of Galician Language, and from recordings and notes collected in interactions with Galician native speakers. An online reading test was developed as to verify the possibilities of uses and interpretations of interactional datives. In this thesis, I claim the functions of Galician interactional datives are twofold: the interactional dative of interest and the interactional dative of solidarity. Both functions map the semantic relationship of the dative case onto the sphere of the speech act and refer to the interlocutors of the interaction, but in rather different ways. While the dative of interest indicates indirect affectation or an evaluation of the narrated event, the dative of solidarity acts as an invitation for the addressee to get involved with the content of the utterance (Janda, 1988, 1993, Maldonado, 1994; Álvarez, 1997; Fried, 2011). In using interactional datives, the speaker establishes a relationship between one of the interlocutors and the narrated event. In this way, dative pronouns can also be considered (inter)subjectivity markers, which select a speech participant as a collaborator or opinion sharer (Traugott, 2009; Haddad, 2013).

This study examines Chinese gay men’s self-presentation on dating app Blued by utilizing a mixed-methods approach. Two studies were conducted. In study 1, 930 profiles were collected and analyzed to gain a quantitative understanding about how Chinese gay men utilize both photographic and textual elements to present themselves on Blued. To further investigate how and why Chinese gay men present themselves visually and textually in certain ways, 30 Blued users were interviewed in study 2. According to the findings of study 1, only about a third of Chinese gay men’s profiles contained at least a recognizable face photo in their Blued profiles. Correlations between demographics and face disclosure were test. Older gay men are less likely to disclose a face photo on Blued than younger gay men. Frequencies and percentage of masculinity, body and sport language were counted, and correlations between demographics and different types of language use were test. The percentage of masculinity, body and sport language used in Blued profiles are 37.6%, 20.9% and 6.2% respectively. Age, height and weight was found to be correlated with different types of language use. People who like using masculinity language are more likely to use body and sport language. The results of Study 2 shows that Chinese gay men have five major motives of constructing a Blued profile: looking for casual sex, looking for romantic/long term relationships, looking for friends, entertainment and seeking phycological comfort. Chinese gay men use a series of strategies to construct their profiles: paying attention to small cues, balancing authenticity and deception, establishing credibility, and bypassing technological constraints. Chinese gay men have different reasons for not disclosing a face photo in their Blued profiles. Worrying about exposing gay identity is the most frequently reported reason. Other reasons include: the design feature of the platform, location of the user, relational goals, lack of confidence in personal appearance, and concerns of photos being misused. Impression evaluation of other’s profiles have also impacted Chinese gay men’s Blued profile construction. When evaluating the profiles constructed by other gay men, Chinese gay men use three strategies: paying attention to small cues, filtering, and believing in rampant deception. This study fills the gap in the research regarding Chinese gay men’s self-presentation on mobile dating apps and indicates that self-presentation is sensitive to cultural and institutional factors.

Full textThis thesis concerns different aspects of dating divergence times in phylogenetic trees, using molecular data and multiple fossil age constraints.
Datings of phylogenetically basal eudicots, monocots and modern birds (Neoaves) are presented. Large phylograms and multiple fossil constraints were used in all these studies. Eudicots and monocots are suggested to be part of a rapid divergence of angiosperms in the Early Cretaceous, with most families present at the Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary. Stem lineages of Neoaves were present in the Late Cretaceous, but the main divergence of extant families took place around the Cre-taceous/Tertiary boundary.
A novel method and computer software for dating large phylogenetic trees, PATHd8, is presented. PATHd8 is a nonparametric smoothing method that smoothes one pair of sister groups at a time, by taking the mean of the added branch lengths from a terminal taxon to a node. Because of the local smoothing, the algorithm is simple, hence providing stable and very fast analyses, allowing for thousands of taxa and an arbitrary number of age constraints.
The importance of fossil constraints and their placement are discussed, and concluded to be the most important factor for obtaining reasonable age estimates.
Different dating methods are compared, and it is concluded that differences in age estimates are obtained from penalized likelihood, PATHd8, and the Bayesian autocorrelation method implemented in the multidivtime program. In the Bayesian method, prior assumptions about evolutionary rate at the root, rate variance and the level of rate smoothing between internal edges, are suggested to influence the results.

Full textStudies on the syntax of indirect objects (IO) in Brazilian Portuguese (BP), with data collected from a varied source of historical documents, reveal the variable use of the prepositions a and para introducing the recipient/goal argument, with predicates of transference, such as dar (to give), etc. Another relevant fact is that the preposition a is lost in contexts in which the IO is interpreted as the benefactive, with verbs of creation, such as construir (to build), etc., being replaced by para. Also, a related property is that the IO is no longer expressed by the 3rd person dative pronoun lhe, suggesting that its morphological expression is affected. Our main goal is to contribute to this aspect of variation and change in the history of BP from the perspective of a new data extracted from 19th and 20th centuries plays. Our results corroborate previous studies: there is a strong decrease in the frequency of 3a person dative clitics as a main strategy on the expression of the pronominal IO. Based on Torres Morais & Salles (2010) and subsequent studies we assume a parametric change in the BP grammar, described as the loss of the low applicative head that introduces the dative IO in ditransitive contexts. Thus configuration with the lexical/true preposition is the only option found in (Standard) BP. As an internalist model, the Principles and Parameters Theory assumes that syntactic change is driven by the first-language acquisition process. Consequently the parametric change is catastrophic in each individual in process of learning the mother tongue (cf. Lightfoot, 1979, 1997, 1999). This kind of approach is not insightful for a number of questions concerning the dynamics of syntactic change. Then, following Roberts (2007) we assume that it is perfectly possible and desirable to reconcile the P&P approach with the Theory of Variation and Change, as proposed by Weinreich, Labov &Hersog (1968) e Labov (1972, 1994). We assume also the ideia of competing grammar as proposed by Kroch (1989, 2000, 2001).

Nutritious food is an important part of individual health and wellness. One way to ensure food is nutritious is to check the date on packages. The date is a guideline to help consumers use food when it is at its peak quality or before spoilage begins. Proper storage conditions and times are also essential in keeping healthy food safe to consume.

Full textThis dissertation makes a study analyzing the use of the third person dative in the formal Portuguese spoken in Belém. In order to arrive at this study, two steps were followed: a thorough survey of the descriptions of the indirect object found in the main grammars of Portuguese and in many other sorts of studies (such as: articles, dissertations and theses) based on linguistic analyses. The literature on the use of dative in the Brazilian Portuguese shows that significant changes in this usage are happening. These changes modify the prototypical dative structure (V + SN + aSP), and besides they occur in different contexts: the speaker uses the preposition \"para\" instead of using \"a\"; the usage of tonic prepositional forms \"a/para ele(s)\" / \"a/para ela(s)\" in anaphoric reference instead of the third person clitic \"lhe\"; the usage of null indirect object; the usage of full SNs. The analysis of the corpus collected in television interviews revealed variations in the usage of dative constructions in Belém, however these variations do not corroborate categorically to changes found by other studies in other regions of Brazil. Not only the dative pronoun \"lhe\", but also the preposition \"a\" are resources very used in dative constructions in the formal belenense.

Full textSeveral studies have pointed at the increasing disappearance of the pronoun dative clitic third person and for the replacement of the preposition a for para for the introduction of indirect object (OI) lexical in Brazilian Portuguese (PB). This phenomenon is identified from data of the nineteenth century and these studies, mostly originated from data of adult language, and few deal with this phenomenon in the school environment. This essay discusses strategies for fulfilling the dative complement in Brazilian Portuguese (BP), characterized by traditional grammar as indirect object, with the usage of the prepositions a and para and its usage as a null form and a pronoun (lhe/lhes) in 6th to 9th grade students\' compositions within a public and a private school, in Santos. Our aim is to verify the school\'s role in the rescuing of the forms of prestige and comparing the data found in the works of Torres Morais and Berlinck (2006), Freire (2011), and Dutra (2003), which point at three innovative strategies: the replacement of the preposition a for para, the progressive loss of 3rd person clitics (lhe/lhes), which are replaced for the prepositional form (a ele/eles, a ela/elas), and the increasing of null forms. Moreover, it is attempted to question if there is a difference, in the grammar internalized by students from public and private school who received different linguistic stimuli.
