Formatting data and executing time-oriented queries on a massive, multi-parameter clinical information database poses significant computational challenges. The challenges encountered in converting high-resolution waveform and trend signals in the MIMIC II (Multi-parameter Intelligent Monitoring for Intensive Care II) database from an error-prone proprietary format to a stable open-source WFDB (Waveform Database) format is presented in the first half of this thesis. The design and implementation of a search engine that is capable of executing time-series queries on clinical information in the MIMIC II database such as lab results, medications, and nurse-verified values from bedside monitors is presented in the second half of this thesis. The search engine employs simple algorithms with little storage overhead to identify time periods in patient records that satisfy time series criteria based on thresholds and gradients of unevenly-sampled measurements. Results from queries executed on the search engine to detect physiological events of clinical interest were presented. Case studies on patient records returned as hits for queries were performed to review the strengths and limitations of the search engine.

I present Nero, a new system that automatically infers and regenerates programs that access databases. The developer first implements a Python program that uses lists and dictionaries to implement the database functionality. Nero then instruments the Python list and dictionary implementations and uses active learning to generate inputs that enable it to infer the behavior of the program. The program can be implemented in any arbitrary style as long as it implements behavior expressible in the domain specific language that characterizes the behaviors that Nero is designed to infer. The regenerated program replaces the Python lists and dictionaries with database tables and contains all code required to successfully access the databases. Results from several inferred and regenerated applications highlight the ability of Nero to enable developers with no knowledge of database programming to obtain programs that successfully access databases.

Full textAs in many other applications, the rapid proliferation and unrestricted Web-based publishing of health-related content have made finding pertinent and useful healthcare information increasingly difficult. Although the development of healthcare information retrieval systems such as medical search engines and peer-reviewed medical Web directories has helped alleviate this information and cognitive overload problem, the effectiveness of these systems has been limited by low search precision, poor presentation of search results, and the required user search effort. To address these challenges, we have developed a domain-specific meta-search tool called Cancer Spider. By leveraging post-retrieval document clustering techniques, this system aids users in querying multiple medical data sources to gain an overview of the retrieved documents and locating answers of high quality to a wide spectrum of health questions. The system presents the retrieved documents to users in two different views: (1) Web pages organized by a list of key phrases, and (2) Web pages clustered into regions discussing different topics on a two-dimensional map (self-organizing map). In this paper, we present the major components of the Cancer Spider system and a user evaluation study designed to evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of our approach. Initial results comparing Cancer Spider with NLM Gateway, a premium medical search site, have shown that they achieved comparable performances measured by precision, recall, and F-measure. Cancer Spider required less user searching time, fewer documents that need to be browsed, and less user effort.

Full textA computerized flow process charting application program of dBase III+ has been developed to aid in resource requirements planning and operations analysis. Traditional flow process charting has used as the following data elements: assembly number, assembly sequence number, distance travelled, time required for the activity and an activity symbol. The computerized system adds several variables to these in order to customize the application at Martin Marietta Electronic Systems. These additional variables include work center identification, machine number identification, lot sizes, set up and run times and manufacturing specifications. Additionally, the circle or operations symbol has been expanded to differentiate between manual, process and test activities. Resources requirements planning and analysis is accomplished by a series of reports where a user defines search requirements and enters three independent equation variables for the calculations. The three variables are realization factor or safety factor, resource availability in hours per month and monthly production demand. The resource requirements can be used in methods engineering, make-buy decisions and resource planning. Sensitivity analyses can be easily accomplished by changing the input variables and/or data.
