Swales, Dylan. "A comparison of web-based technologies to serve images from an Oracle9i database." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1004380.

Full text
Abstract:
The nature of Internet and Intranet Web applications has changed from a static content-distribution medium into an interactive, dynamic medium, often used to serve multimedia from back-end object-relational databases to Web-enabled clients. Consequently, developers need to make an informed technological choice for developing software that supports a Web-based application for distributing multimedia over networks. This decision is based on several factors. Among the factors are ease of programming, richness of features, scalability, and performance. The research focuses on these key factors when distributing images from an Oracle9i database using Java Servlets, JSP, ASP, and ASP.NET as the server-side development technologies. Prototype applications are developed and tested within each technology: one for single image serving and the other for multiple image serving. A matrix of recommendations is provided to distinguish which technology, or combination of technologies, provides the best performance and development platform for image serving within the studied envirorunent.

Formatting data and executing time-oriented queries on a massive, multi-parameter clinical information database poses significant computational challenges. The challenges encountered in converting high-resolution waveform and trend signals in the MIMIC II (Multi-parameter Intelligent Monitoring for Intensive Care II) database from an error-prone proprietary format to a stable open-source WFDB (Waveform Database) format is presented in the first half of this thesis. The design and implementation of a search engine that is capable of executing time-series queries on clinical information in the MIMIC II database such as lab results, medications, and nurse-verified values from bedside monitors is presented in the second half of this thesis. The search engine employs simple algorithms with little storage overhead to identify time periods in patient records that satisfy time series criteria based on thresholds and gradients of unevenly-sampled measurements. Results from queries executed on the search engine to detect physiological events of clinical interest were presented. Case studies on patient records returned as hits for queries were performed to review the strengths and limitations of the search engine.

Trotman, Andrew, and n/a. "Searching and ranking structured documents." University of Otago. Department of Computer Science, 2007. http://adt.otago.ac.nz./public/adt-NZDU20070403.110440.

Full text
Abstract:
It is common to see documents with explicit structure marked up in languages such as XML. Queries, on the other hand, typically have no structure. There is a clear mismatch, although documents contain structure it is typically not used in information retrieval. An efficient index structure for document-centric searching is proposed and its efficiency is discussed. It is shown to be at worst linear with respect to the number of occurrences of a given search term. The algorithm is then extended to accommodate element-centric information retrieval. Ranking algorithms for structured documents are examined. Genetic Algorithms are used to learn different weights for each structure present in a document. Applying these weights as part of a function is shown to yield significant precision improvements in some functions. Genetic Programming is then used to learn an entire ranking function. This function is shown to be portable between document collections. A query language for structured information retrieval is proposed. Use of this language in the 2004 INEX workshop resulted in a large decrease in query errors. Structured information retrieval is now a viable alternative to its unstructured counterpart. A successful query language, efficient indexing structures, and improved ranking functions are all presented.

I present Nero, a new system that automatically infers and regenerates programs that access databases. The developer first implements a Python program that uses lists and dictionaries to implement the database functionality. Nero then instruments the Python list and dictionary implementations and uses active learning to generate inputs that enable it to infer the behavior of the program. The program can be implemented in any arbitrary style as long as it implements behavior expressible in the domain specific language that characterizes the behaviors that Nero is designed to infer. The regenerated program replaces the Python lists and dictionaries with database tables and contains all code required to successfully access the databases. Results from several inferred and regenerated applications highlight the ability of Nero to enable developers with no knowledge of database programming to obtain programs that successfully access databases.

Abstract:
Database and database technology are having a major impact on the growing use of computers. The rising popularity of database systems for the management of data has resulted in an increasing number of systems. As the number grows, the difficulty in choosing the system which will best meet the requirements of a particular application also increases. Knowing how to choose the correct one for a given application is important. The purpose of this thesis is to compare two very commonly used Database Management Systems (ORACLE and RDB) at Ball State University by describing and listing the advantages of each of them as well as their weaknesses, giving a comprehensive study of their performances, user friendliness, limits, and to aid users and managers in obtaining a deeper knowledge of these two systems.

Abstract:
Databases and database technology are having a major impact on the growing use of computers. It is fair to say that databases are playing a critical role in almost all areas where computers are used, including business, engineering, medicine, law, education, and library science, to name a few.At Ball State University, databases are very widely used among faculty, staff, and students. The common commercial database management system (DBMS) used in the university is ORACLE. Due to the extensive use of the system and the availability and easy access to alternative systems such as RDB/VMS, a comparative research is in order. This thesis is a comprehensive comparison between the two systems. It covers the differences in design, SQL codings, and the use of host programming language such as FORTRAN. It concentrates on the differences in memory usage, execution time, as well as the CPU time needed to precompile, link, and run.

Porter, Brandi. "Information Retrieval Strategies of Millennial Undergraduate Students in Web and Library Database Searches." NSUWorks, 2009. http://nsuworks.nova.edu/gscis_etd/357.

Full text
Abstract:
Millennial students make up a large portion of undergraduate students attending colleges and universities, and they have a variety of online resources available to them to complete academically related information searches, primarily Web based and library-based online information retrieval systems. The content, ease of use, and required search techniques are different between the two information retrieval systems. Students often prefer searching the Web, but in doing so often miss higher quality materials that may be available only through their library. Furthermore, each system uses different information retrieval algorithms for producing results, so proficiency in one search system may not transfer to another. Web based information retrieval systems are unable to search and retrieve many resources available in libraries and other proprietary information retrieval systems, often referred to as the Invisible Web. These are resources that are not available to the general public and are password protected (from anyone not considered to be an affiliated user of that particular organization). These resources are often licensed to libraries by third party vendors or publishers and include fee-based access to content. Therefore, many millennial students may not be accessing many scholarly resources available to them if they were to use Web based information retrieval systems. Investigation of how millennial students approach searches for the same topic in both systems was conducted. The goal was to build upon theory of why students search using various techniques, why they often choose the Web for their searches, and what can be done to improve library online information retrieval systems. Mixed qualitative methods of data gathering were used to elicit this information. The investigation showed that millennial undergraduate students lacked detailed search strategies, and often used the same search techniques regardless of system or subject. Students displayed greater familiarity and ease of use with Web based IR systems than online library IR systems. Results illustrated suggestions for search design enhancements to library online information retrieval systems such as better natural language searching and easier linking to full text articles. Design enhancements based on millennial search strategies should encourage students to use library-based information retrieval systems more often.

Abstract:
Artificial Intelligence Lab, Department of MIS, University of Arizona
As in many other applications, the rapid proliferation and unrestricted Web-based publishing of health-related content have made finding pertinent and useful healthcare information increasingly difficult. Although the development of healthcare information retrieval systems such as medical search engines and peer-reviewed medical Web directories has helped alleviate this information and cognitive overload problem, the effectiveness of these systems has been limited by low search precision, poor presentation of search results, and the required user search effort. To address these challenges, we have developed a domain-specific meta-search tool called Cancer Spider. By leveraging post-retrieval document clustering techniques, this system aids users in querying multiple medical data sources to gain an overview of the retrieved documents and locating answers of high quality to a wide spectrum of health questions. The system presents the retrieved documents to users in two different views: (1) Web pages organized by a list of key phrases, and (2) Web pages clustered into regions discussing different topics on a two-dimensional map (self-organizing map). In this paper, we present the major components of the Cancer Spider system and a user evaluation study designed to evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of our approach. Initial results comparing Cancer Spider with NLM Gateway, a premium medical search site, have shown that they achieved comparable performances measured by precision, recall, and F-measure. Cancer Spider required less user searching time, fewer documents that need to be browsed, and less user effort.

Full text
Abstract:
The quest to build anthropomorphic machines has led researchers to focus on knowledge and the manipulation thereof. Recently, the expert system was proposed as a solution, working well in small, well understood domains. However these initial attempts highlighted the tedious process associated with building systems to display intelligence, the most notable being the Knowledge Acquisition Bottleneck. Attempts to circumvent this problem have led researchers to propose the use of machine learning databases as a source of knowledge. Attempts to utilise databases as sources of knowledge has led to the development Database-Driven Expert Systems. Furthermore, it has been ascertained that a requisite for intelligent systems is powerful computation. In response to these problems and proposals, a new type of database-driven expert system, Cogitator is proposed. It is shown to circumvent the Knowledge Acquisition Bottleneck and posess many other advantages over both traditional expert systems and connectionist systems, whilst having non-serious disadvantages.

This paper seeks to describe the process by which a database-centric web application was redesigned and rewritten to take advantage of Apache’s Lucene - an open-source information retrieval software library written in the Java programming language. After the implementation of a Lucene-based text index of “semi-structured data”, a college radio station's card catalog application was able to deliver higher-quality search results in significantly less time than it was able to do using just a relational database alone. Additionally, the dramatic improvements in speed and performance even allowed the search results interface to be redesigned and enhanced with an improved pagination system and new features such as faceted search/filtering.

Abstract:
It is not revolutionary to say that repetition and practical experience is a very important aspect in learning about and understanding a topic. This is especially true for languages, particularly from the point of view of vocabulary.Like in many other processes that deal with gaining knowledge, studying foreign words involves a lot of side work: For instance the selection of words, or their presentation for the actual training. The purpose of this thesis is to automate the study of vocabulary. To do so, an intelligent software package was developed. Divided into three parts the project takes into account the aspects from the language point of view, from the studying point of view, and from the computer science point of view. The fundamental idea to accomplish the goal is a relational database system. It is utilized by software programs that solve their tasks in respect to data management, data manipulation, storage and retrieval, in an efficient way.The system is developed for English speaking persons studying German as a foreign language. And with every language having its own nature, it naturally influences all levels and aspects of design and utilization of the database.l:

Abstract:
The growing widespread use of data communication networks has led to increased reliance on the availability of network resources. The network itself is a critical resource which must be managed in a timely and effective manner. In order to manage the network effectively, the network manager must have powerful tools that present network information in a fast and logical way. The work presented here is the design and development of a network management tool for Sytek broadband networks. The Sytek Network Management Package (SNMP) incorporates a commercial database management system, Rbase System V, and menu oriented management functions for the University of Arizona Sytek broadband networks. The SNMP is written in C and executes on a PC connected to the Sytek network. The SNMP allows a network manager to manage both the Sytek LocalNet 20 and System 2000 networks.

Abstract:
University of Central Florida College of Engineering Thesis
A computerized flow process charting application program of dBase III+ has been developed to aid in resource requirements planning and operations analysis. Traditional flow process charting has used as the following data elements: assembly number, assembly sequence number, distance travelled, time required for the activity and an activity symbol. The computerized system adds several variables to these in order to customize the application at Martin Marietta Electronic Systems. These additional variables include work center identification, machine number identification, lot sizes, set up and run times and manufacturing specifications. Additionally, the circle or operations symbol has been expanded to differentiate between manual, process and test activities. Resources requirements planning and analysis is accomplished by a series of reports where a user defines search requirements and enters three independent equation variables for the calculations. The three variables are realization factor or safety factor, resource availability in hours per month and monthly production demand. The resource requirements can be used in methods engineering, make-buy decisions and resource planning. Sensitivity analyses can be easily accomplished by changing the input variables and/or data.

Chen, Junjie. "Learning hash codes for multimedia retrieval." HKBU Institutional Repository, 2019. https://repository.hkbu.edu.hk/etd_oa/684.

Full text
Abstract:
The explosive growth of multimedia data in online media repositories and social networks has led to the high demand of fast and accurate services for large-scale multimedia retrieval. Hashing, due to its effectiveness in coding high-dimensional data into a low-dimensional binary space, has been considered to be effective for the retrieval application. Despite the progress that has been made recently, how to learn the optimal hashing models which can make the best trade-off between the retrieval efficiency and accuracy remains to be open research issues. This thesis research aims to develop hashing models which are effective for image and video retrieval. An unsupervised hashing model called APHash is first proposed to learn hash codes for images by exploiting the distribution of data. To reduce the underlying computational complexity, a methodology that makes use of an asymmetric similarity matrix is explored and found effective. In addition, the deep learning approach to learn hash codes for images is also studied. In particular, a novel deep model called DeepQuan which tries to incorporate product quantization methods into an unsupervised deep model for the learning. Other than adopting only the quadratic loss as the optimization objective like most of the related deep models, DeepQuan optimizes the data representations and their quantization codebooks to explores the clustering structure of the underlying data manifold where the introduction of a weighted triplet loss into the learning objective is found to be effective. Furthermore, the case with some labeled data available for the learning is also considered. To alleviate the high training cost (which is especially crucial given a large-scale database), another hashing model named Similarity Preserving Deep Asymmetric Quantization (SPDAQ) is proposed for both image and video retrieval where the compact binary codes and quantization codebooks for all the items in the database can be explicitly learned in an efficient manner. All the aforementioned hashing methods proposed have been rigorously evaluated using benchmark datasets and found to outperform the related state-of-the-art methods.

Pielech, Bradford Charles. "Adaptive Scheduling Algorithm Selection in a Streaming Query System." Digital WPI, 2004. https://digitalcommons.wpi.edu/etd-theses/79.

Full text
Abstract:
Many modern applications process queries over unbounded streams of data. These applications include tracking financial data from international markets, intrusion detection in networks, monitoring remote sensors, and monitoring patients vital signs. These data streams arrive in real time, are unbounded in length and have unpredictable arrival patterns due to external uncontrollable factors such as network congestion or weather in the case of remote sensors. This thesis presents a novel technique for adapting the execution of stream queries that, to my knowledge, is not present in any other continuous query system to date. This thesis hypothesizes that utilizing a single scheduling algorithm to execute a continuous query, as is employed in other state-of-the-art continuous query systems, is not sufficient because existing scheduling algorithms all have inherent flaws or tradeoffs. Thus, one scheduling algorithm cannot optimally meet an arbitrary set of Quality of Service (QoS) requirements. Therefore, to meet unique features of specific monitoring applications, an adaptive strategy selector guidable by QoS requirements was developed. The adaptive strategy selector monitors the effects of its behavior on its environment through a feedback mechanism, with the aim of exploiting previously beneficial behavior and exploring alternative behavior. The feedback mechanism is guided by qualitatively comparing how well each algorithm has met the QoS requirements. Then the next scheduling algorithm is chosen by spinning a roulette wheel where each candidate is chosen with a probability equal to its performance score. The adaptive algorithm is general, being able to employ any candidate scheduling algorithm and to react to any combination of quality of service preferences. As part of this thesis, the Raindrop system was developed as exploratory test bed in which to conduct an experimental study. In that experimental study, the adaptive algorithm was shown to be effective in outperforming single scheduling algorithms for many QoS combinations and data arrival patterns.

The National Geodetic Survey (NGS) publishes only the results of those surveys that their agency performs, as well as other surveys that meet certain criteria. The advantages of a state office which would disseminate NGS control data as well as all other survey data within the state are discussed. Since NGS now distributes its data on floppy diskettes, the design of a microcomputer database to access this information is investigated. This thesis focuses on such a database system operated mainly by the end-user of control data. An integrated software system, in which. related computational programs are linked to the database, is also considered. The dBase III package, as one software alternative, is examined. Applicability to geographic information systems is also explored. Data formats, file sizes, and administrative concerns are dealt with, and future research and development in these and related areas are proposed.

Abstract:
This research explores the complexities of database security, encompassing both the computer hardware and software. Also important is its nature as a people oriented issue. A risk analysis of a database system's security can be examined by creating a simulation model. Though, in order for it to be truly meaningful and accurate, all aspects of design, performance and procedure must be thoroughly and carefully scrutinized.Computer or data security is a major problem in today's world of data processing. This thesis outlines the security problem' and presents trends and issues. It also addresses current trends in computer security environments, database risk analysis, and simulations.Risk analysis is a technique used to quantitatively assess the relative value of protective measures. It is useful when appropriately applied and is in some cases required by regulatory agencies. The goal of security environments is to outline the framework which is valuable in assessing security issues and in establishing partitions in the overall environment within which this and other approaches to security can be examined.A simulation prototype is given which demonstrates the concepts of risk analysis for a database system.

Chandra, Yohan. "Natural Language Interfaces to Databases." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2006. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc5474/.

Full text
Abstract:
Natural language interfaces to databases (NLIDB) are systems that aim to bridge the gap between the languages used by humans and computers, and automatically translate natural language sentences to database queries. This thesis proposes a novel approach to NLIDB, using graph-based models. The system starts by collecting as much information as possible from existing databases and sentences, and transforms this information into a knowledge base for the system. Given a new question, the system will use this knowledge to analyze and translate the sentence into its corresponding database query statement. The graph-based NLIDB system uses English as the natural language, a relational database model, and SQL as the formal query language. In experiments performed with natural language questions ran against a large database containing information about U.S. geography, the system showed good performance compared to the state-of-the-art in the field.

Abstract:
The relational model has dominated the database field because of its reduced application development time and non-procedural data manipulation features. It has significant problems, however, including weak integrity constraints. This paper discusses the need for object oriented techniques to improve on these flaws. Three existing DBMS will be discussed: IRIS, ORION, and OZ.
