Al-Shahrani, Abdullah M. R. "Towards the development of a strategy for a national spatial data infrastructure." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2002. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/11010/.

Abstract:
In today's world of ever advancing technology the time is precisely right for investment in the development and implementation of a national spatial data infrastructure. This implies that all spatial data presently scattered in different departments and organisations are coordinated and shared. In the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia there are a number of different mapping and Geographic Information System (GIS) activities being implemented within various government organisations, each with its own merits. Certain research and pilot projects have also been carried out aiming to provide help and recommendations with regard to spatial data sharing and to promote awareness of the importance of spatial data to the Kingdom's development. However, there is an urgent need for a consolidation of effort to avoid the costly mistake of duplication of work; hence the need for a unified national spatial data infrastructure. This research aims to develop a conceptual framework for a strategy for a national spatial data infrastructure (SNSDI) including its main components. A proposal is presented for a Saudi national spatial data infrastructure (which happens to have the same abbreviation - SNSDI) to consolidate isolated mapping and spatial data efforts in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in place of the current practice of each agency acting independently. This research project will hopefully provide a leadership role in developing a Kingdom-wide spatial data infrastructure.

The relevance of the study of the impact of journalistic investigations based on information from open data portals is due to e-government reforms in Ukraine, which oblige the authorities at the national and local levels to publish data on their activities in the open. The aim of the work is to outline the importance of the media, which collect and analyze published data and thus become a tool for interaction between society and local authorities.

Rifaie, Mohammad. "Strategy and methodology for enterprise data warehouse development : integrating data mining and social networking techniques for identifying different communities within the data warehouse." Thesis, University of Bradford, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10454/4416.

Abstract:
Data warehouse technology has been successfully integrated into the information infrastructure of major organizations as potential solution for eliminating redundancy and providing for comprehensive data integration. Realizing the importance of a data warehouse as the main data repository within an organization, this dissertation addresses different aspects related to the data warehouse architecture and performance issues. Many data warehouse architectures have been presented by industry analysts and research organizations. These architectures vary from the independent and physical business unit centric data marts to the centralised two-tier hub-and-spoke data warehouse. The operational data store is a third tier which was offered later to address the business requirements for inter-day data loading. While the industry-available architectures are all valid, I found them to be suboptimal in efficiency (cost) and effectiveness (productivity). In this dissertation, I am advocating a new architecture (The Hybrid Architecture) which encompasses the industry advocated architecture. The hybrid architecture demands the acquisition, loading and consolidation of enterprise atomic and detailed data into a single integrated enterprise data store (The Enterprise Data Warehouse) where businessunit centric Data Marts and Operational Data Stores (ODS) are built in the same instance of the Enterprise Data Warehouse. For the purpose of highlighting the role of data warehouses for different applications, we describe an effort to develop a data warehouse for a geographical information system (GIS). We further study the importance of data practices, quality and governance for financial institutions by commenting on the RBC Financial Group case. v The development and deployment of the Enterprise Data Warehouse based on the Hybrid Architecture spawned its own issues and challenges. Organic data growth and business requirements to load additional new data significantly will increase the amount of stored data. Consequently, the number of users will increase significantly. Enterprise data warehouse obesity, performance degradation and navigation difficulties are chief amongst the issues and challenges. Association rules mining and social networks have been adopted in this thesis to address the above mentioned issues and challenges. We describe an approach that uses frequent pattern mining and social network techniques to discover different communities within the data warehouse. These communities include sets of tables frequently accessed together, sets of tables retrieved together most of the time and sets of attributes that mostly appear together in the queries. We concentrate on tables in the discussion; however, the model is general enough to discover other communities. We first build a frequent pattern mining model by considering each query as a transaction and the tables as items. Then, we mine closed frequent itemsets of tables; these itemsets include tables that are mostly accessed together and hence should be treated as one unit in storage and retrieval for better overall performance. We utilize social network construction and analysis to find maximum-sized sets of related tables; this is a more robust approach as opposed to a union of overlapping itemsets. We derive the Jaccard distance between the closed itemsets and construct the social network of tables by adding links that represent distance above a given threshold. The constructed network is analyzed to discover communities of tables that are mostly accessed together. The reported test results are promising and demonstrate the applicability and effectiveness of the developed approach.

Abstract:
This thesis examines and evaluates whether it is possible to measure the quality of a software project and introduces a metric that will evaluate if the quality of every test performed when developing software can be measured. This subject is examined because it can be hard to conclude how well a project and all its parts performed, both during implementation and after it is done. To facilitate this need, this thesis provides a possible solution.   To try and answer these questions and meet the needs of this tool a prototype has been developed. The prototype is automated and runs through all the software development tests selected for this project. It sums up the test results and later translates them with the help of a metric to tell its quality grade. The metric is calculated with the help of an arbitrary formula developed for this thesis. Once the metric is concluded the development team working with the project will have an overview of how well each test area is performing and how well the project's end result was. With the help of this metric it is also easier to see if the quality achieved meets the company’s standards and the customer’s wishes. The prototype aims to be sustainable because the solution should last for a long term and also because sustainability means a smoother and more efficient way for developers and other people involved to work with the prototype since not much extra work will be required when updates need to be implemented or other necessary implementations.   The prototype is applied on a second project, which is larger and more advanced than the project created for this thesis, to get a better and accurate understanding if the implementation is correct and if the metric can be used as a value to describe a project. The metric results are compared and evaluated. The results of this thesis conclude a proof-of-concept and can be seen as a first step in a longer evaluation and process in determining the quality of tests. The results conclusion is that more parameters and more weighing of each tests importance are needed in order to achieve a reliable metric result.   This tool is meant to ease and help developers to quickly come to a conclusion about how good the work is. It could also be beneficial for a company with focus on web development and IT-solutions though it will be easier to follow and set a standard for the services they provide.

Abstract:
Real Time GNSS networks established across countries over the last fifteen years, provide centimetre level accuracy for a wide range of applications differing from precise ship docking to land surveying. Public sector organizations deploy GNSS Networks to support infrastructure projects. Private companies establish their own networks for commercial or private use. The number of users of these networks has steadily increased over the years, and a potential new market has been created. This thesis focuses on the exploitation of the advantages of using multiple users operating within a GNSS network as part of the system, as a virtual network of stations that can operate autonomously and combined with the reference station network. A new network-RTK methodology that encompasses the multiple users of network RTK services for instantaneous positioning, is presented. Users are equipped with a means of two-way communication that enables the data to be transmitted to a central processing facility on an epoch by epoch basis. A centralised approach reduces the need for complex algorithms at the user side. The methodology is tested through the use of data from the South California Integrated GNSS Network (SCIGN) for two different network formations with different numbers of users operating simultaneously. It is shown that regional estimation of relative ionospheric corrections from the proposed methodology has a positive effect on the overall ambiguity resolution success rates when compared to the use of a standard ionospheric model. It is demonstrated that the use of the multiple rovers operating in the network increase the ambiguity success rates for the ones outside the network area by almost 20%. A smaller improvement for rovers near the boundaries of the network is also achieved. Finally, new prospects for regional atmospheric modeling become available, since the algorithm estimates all the double difference ambiguities for the reference station-rover system.

Abstract:
Innovations are coming together and are changing business landscapes, markets, and societies. Data-driven technologies form new or increase expectations on products, services, and business processes. Industrial companies must reconstruct both their physical environment and mindset to adapt accordingly successfully. One of the technologies paving the way for data-driven acceleration is machine learning. Machine learning-technologies require a high degree of structured digitalization and data to be functional. The technology has the potential to extract immense value for manufacturers because of its ability to analyse large quantities of data. The author of this thesis identified a research gap regarding how industrial manufacturers need to approach and prepare for machine learning technologies. Research indicated that data quality is one of the significant issues when organisations try to approach the technology. Earlier frameworks on data quality have not yet captured the aspects of manufacturing and machine learning as one. By reviewing data quality frameworks, including machine learning or manufacturing perspectives, the thesis aims to contribute with an area-specific data quality framework in the interface of machine learning and manufacturing. To gain further insights and to complement the current research in the areas, qualitative interviews were conducted with experts on machine learning, data and industrial manufacturing. The study finds that ten different data quality dimensions are essential for industrial manufacturers interested in machine learning. The insights from the framework contribute with knowledge to the data quality research, as well as providing industrial manufacturing companies with an understanding of machine learning data requirements.

Abstract:
Introduction: Technology has changed the way retailers do business in a fundamental way. One of those changes is the emergence of multi- and omnichannel retailing. In strategic changes both information and management accounting are affecting the decisions. In a world where the production of new information is increasing rapidly it’s hard to know which information that are relevant. Purpose: The purpose of the study is to survey and analyse the information used as decision support and which forces that have driven the strategic change towards multichannel retailing in the retail industry. Furthermore the purpose is to examine how and why management accounting has affected retailers during the strategic change. Methodology: Based on the study’s research question and purpose a case study was chosen as research method. After completing the case study a complementary survey based on the results from the case study was conducted. Semi structured interviews were used as data collection method. Conclusion: Many different forces and information types have driven the change to multichannel retailing. Company culture, an changing environment and the vast access to information are affecting retailers to make fast decisions. The need for fast decisions and an changing environment affects the design of retailers management accounting, which has a focus towards customer information.

Burgess, Robin. "The development of a single strategy for the integration of quantitative and qualitative data types for the production of decision support systems." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2008. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/14185/.

Full text
Abstract:
The research described in this thesis expresses the importance of quantitative and qualitative data types and how these can be incorporated and combined to produce an agricultural management decision support system (DSS). Researchers cannot solely depend on numerical data and relationships when designing, modelling and producing decision management tools. The relevance of the social sciences and peoples interpretations of these tools is equally important. The DSS described here focuses on the management of rainwater harvesting (RWH) in Tanzania. Numerical data related to natural resources (water and nutrients) and yields of rice and maize have been collected for the production of the DSS. With regard to the social science factors, the DSS tackles the concept of common pool resources (CPR) of water and nutrients. The importance of CPR is well understood, however their inclusion in the production of models is a relatively new concept. Criteria related to social status is linked with the by laws that govern the allocation of natural resources in Tanzania to help derive a numerical method for including CPR within the DSS. The production of the DSS is a novel way of combining this research into a tool that aims to benefit all socio-economic community groups. During the production of the DSS, a single generic approach for the inclusion of quantitative and qualitative information has developed. Particular focus was on the development of a model base (programming and mathematical relationship building), database (storage of the data used for the relationships) and a dialog system (the user-interface and communication strategy). This method is termed the ‘dialog, data, and models (DDM)’ paradigm (Sprague and Carlson, 1982). From this research, a DSS has been produced that aims to optimise RWH management in Tanzania with the aim of alleviating poverty and enhancing sustainable agriculture for all community members. Also an overall strategy for the production of DSSs has been produced. It illustrates how both quantitative (numerical and physical data) and qualitative (socio-economic considerations) can be utilised individually and in combination for the production of DSSs and can be extrapolated for further research and to new areas.

Abstract:
An important requirement of a rational policy for provision of outdoor recreation opportunities is some understanding of natural processes and public concern and /or preferences. Computerized land use suitability mapping is a technique which can help find the best location for a variety of developmental actions given a set of goals and other criteria. Over the past two decades, the methods and techniques of land use planning have been engaged in a revolution on at least two fronts as to shift the basic theories and attitudes of which land use decisions are based. The first of these fronts is the inclusion of environmental concerns, and the second is the application of more systematic methods or models. While these automated capabilities have shed new light on environmental issues, they, unfortunately, have failed to develop sufficient intelligence and adaptation to accurately model the dynamics of ecosystems. The work reported proceeds on the belief that neural network models can be used to assess and develop resource management strategies for Mounds State Park, Anderson, Indiana. The study combines a photographic survey technique with a geographic information system (GIS) and artificial neural networks (NN) to investigate the perceived impact of park management activities on recreation opportunities and experiences. It is unique in that it incorporates both survey data with spatial data and an optimizing technique to develop a model for predicting perceived management values for short and long term recreation management.According to Jeannette Stanley and Evan Bak (1988) a neural network is a massively parallel, dynamic systems of highly interconnected interacting parts based on neurobiological models. The behavior of the network depends heavily on the connection details. The state of the network evolves continually with time. Networks are considered clever and intuitive because they learn by example rather than following simple programming rules. They are defined by a set of rules or patterns based on expertise or perception for better decision making. With experience networks become sensitive to subtle relationships in the environment which are not obvious to humans. The model was developed as a counter-propagation network with a four layer learning network consisting of an input layer, a normalized layer, a kohonen layer, and an output layer. The counter-propagation network is a feed-forward network which combines Kohonen and Widrow-Hoff learning rules for a new type of mapping neural network. The network was trained with patterns derived by mapping five variables (slope, aspect, vegetation, soil, site features) and survey responses from three groups. The responses included, for each viewshed, the preference and management values, and three recreational activities each group associated with a given landscape. Overall the model behaves properly in learning the different rules and generalizing in cases where inputs had not been shown to the network apriori. Maps are provided to illustrate the different responses obtained from each group and simulated by the model. The study is not conclusive as to the capabilities of the combination of GIS techniques and neural networks, but it gives a good flavor of what can be achieved when accurate mapping information is used by an intelligent system for decision making.

Abstract:
The Wider Caribbean Region does not have a regional waste management strategy. An integrated approach to waste management throughout the region would benefit many economic sectors, safeguard people’s health and improve environmental quality. Numerous studies, above all a project conducted in 1994 by the World Bank, pointed out that one of the main reasons why such strategy has not been developed yet lies in the scarce availability of data in the waste management sector. Through on field researches and the analysis of institutional reports, the objective of the present study is defining the reasons that led and still underpin such scarcity. Furthermore, the study proposes a new methodology of data collection and improvements to one of the mathematical model that is used to estimate waste quantities in ports. The purpose of the paper is to find an integrated solution to a double challenge: waste abundance and energy scarcity, with focus on ship generated waste management.

Abstract:
In the recent decades, individual industries and whole sectors have been transformed due to the digital revolution. A combination of disruptive technologies and innovative business models, leading to new market opportunities and bringing unique values to customers. Companies that are primarily focused on the digitalization are able to scale their businesses faster and gain leading market positions. This thesis explored the impact of digitalization on the rail industry based on a business case by Bombardier Transportation (BT). Deregulation of the rail market and a focus on passengers’ experience was identified by BT as a business opportunity. Bombardier’s strategy was to extend products and services beyond those of a train operator, toward passengers. Bombardier initiated a project with code name “ON: BOARD” that was aimed at increasing journey experience by providing digital entertainment. However, the problem was the lack of knowledge regarding the passengers’ interest towards services provided under the scope of the project ON: BOARD, in particular in the Urban Area. The goal of this thesis was to observe passengers’ interest towards services of the project ON: BOARD traveling with Commuter trains in the area of Stockholm city. In order to meet the research goal and answer research questions, a qualitative method was selected. To be more precise, a survey with a structured questionnaire was conducted within a heterogeneous population. Non-probability quota-based sampling technique was selected. The collected data was analyzed based on descriptive statistical method, in particular, using one-way and cross-tabulation methods. Based on the research result the conclusion was following: passengers in the Urban area, in particular, commuter trains, were highly interested in the connectivity functionalities provided under the scope of project ON: BOARD. Thus, Bombardier was recommended to enter Urban Transport as the part of the market expansion strategy.

Abstract:
This study reports one of the first controlled studies to examine the impact of a school based positive youth development program (Lerner, Fisher, & Weinberg, 2000) on promoting qualitative change in life course experiences as a positive intervention outcome. The study built on a recently proposed relational developmental methodological metanarrative (Overton, 1998) and advances in use of qualitative research methods (Denzin & Lincoln, 2000). The study investigated the use the Life Course Interview (Clausen, 1998) and an integrated qualitative and quantitative data analytic strategy (IQDAS) to provide empirical documentation of the impact the Changing Lives Program on qualitative change in positive identity in a multicultural population of troubled youth in an alternative public high school. The psychosocial life course intervention approach used in this study draws its developmental framework from both psychosocial developmental theory (Erikson, 1968) and life course theory (Elder, 1998) and its intervention strategies from the transformative pedagogy of Freire's (1983/1970). Using the 22 participants in the Intervention Condition and the 10 participants in the Control Condition, RMANOVAs found significantly more positive qualitative change in personal identity for program participants relative to the non-intervention control condition. In addition, the 2X2X2X3 mixed design RMANOVA in which Time (pre, post) was the repeated factor and Condition (Intervention versus Control), Gender, and Ethnicity the between group factors, also found significant interactions for the Time by Gender and Time by Ethnicity. Moreover, the directionality of the basic pattern of change was positive for participants of both genders and all three ethnic groups. The pattern of the moderation effects also indicated a marked tendency for participants in the intervention group to characterize their sense of self as more secure and less negative at the end of the their first semester in the intervention, that was stable across both genders and all three ethnicities. The basic differential pattern of an increase in the intervention condition of a positive characterization of sense of self relative to both pre test and relative to the directionality of the movement of the non-intervention controls, was stable across both genders and all three ethnic groups.

Abstract:
Nytt AB is a startup focusing on simplifying the concept of smart manufacturing to small and medium-sized companies providing an add-on machine monitoring solution for data analyzing. The product is currently under development with the final product soon to be launched. In the next phase of Nytt AB, a marketing plan has to be strategized. This thesis, which is built on previous Nytt AB’s work, focuses on addressing issues that will be important when creating a marketing and sales strategy. The customer is put as the focal point and the customer values analyzed including discussions on productivity improvements within the machines and how to standardize the changes to satisfy every customer. Using research questions as a base for the study, the customer values were analyzed by first understanding the main threats, weaknesses, strengths, and opportunities for the product and then analyzing data from an installed prototype and the improvements that can be achieved based on the data. Abstract:
In recent years there has been an increasing interest in understanding how organizations can utilize big data in their process management to create value and improve their processes. This is due to new challenges for process management which have arisen from increasing competition and the complexity of large data sets due to technological advancements. These large data sets have been described by scholars as big data which involves data that are so complex traditional data analysis software are not sufficient in managing or analyzing them. Because of the complexity of handling such great volumes of data there is a big gap in practical examples where organizations have incorporated big data in their process management. Therefore, in order to fill relevant gaps and contribute to advancements in this field, this thesis will explore how big data can contribute to improved process management. Hence, the aim of this thesis entailed investigating how, why and to what extent big data is used in process management. As well as to outline the purpose and challenges of using big data in process management. This was accomplished through a literature review and a survey, respectively, in order to understand how big data had previously been used to create value and improve processes in organizations. From the extensive literature review, an analysis matrix of how big data is used in process management is provided through the intersections between big data and process management dimensions. The analysis matrix showed that most of the instances in which big data was used in process management were in process analysis & improvement and process control & agility. Simply put, organizations used big data in specific activities involved in process management but not in a holistic manner. Furthermore, the limited findings from the survey indicate that the main challenges and purposes of big data use in Swedish organizations are the complexity of handling data and making statistically better decisions, respectively.

Full text
Abstract:
The research topic is: Tools for the revision of a maintenance strategy for an explosives manufacturing plant, using asset management principles. This research has specific reference to the SASOL Prillan plant based in SASOL, Sasolburg. The purpose of this research is to identify tools for the revision of a maintenance strategy for an explosives manufacturing plant, using asset management principles. These tools must be aimed to increase the proactive work capacity index, Figure 3, and to identify and/or develop tools that can be used by the engineering team of this explosives manufacturing plant to increase equipment reliability and performance. In this research assets include people. The meaning and application of asset management principles were researched and the tools needed to combine existing efforts and future needs are discussed. The human element to ensure the successful implementation of an asset management culture was researched and attributes of leaders and a change model is presented. This research was done into the wider engineering management discipline and not only maintenance. The method used to gather data was by means of interviews of a sample group within this organization. As this manufacturing unit makes use of subject matter experts, these support functions and plant personnel that were not interviewed, were issued with questionnaires to ensure that the sample group is a fair representation of the total manufacturing facility. To obtain a holistic view of potential shortcomings within the current maintenance strategy, all disciplines and levels within this operation were interviewed and commonalities of various asset management models were determined and used to define existing problem areas. This data was used to determine statistical correlations. The case study presented in Chapter 1 indicates that there is a case for change that can improve the proactive work capacity index of the engineering team. The results of this research confirm that there is in fact a real requirement to increase spares accuracy, improve on technical training as well as a need to establish visual performance indicators (dashboard) to measure overall equipment efficiency with the goal toTools for the revision of a maintenance strategy for an explosives manufacturing plant, using asset management principles increase equipment reliability and performance. The technical training referred to in this research reflects on training of people on equipment after investment in new technology. The current spares holding strategy is lacking equipment description accuracy. Furthermore, it is recommended that the implementation of career paths and development plans for individuals must be developed to create an environment of learning. The use of user status information captured on the computerized maintenance management system (SAP R/3) can add to the management of works orders and indicate where the focus must be to complete overdue work orders. Open work orders should be used to manage expenditure, to measure planning efficiency and to manage the cash flow of the business. The use of overall equipment efficiency and engineering efficiency measures is recommended and must be visually displayed on a “dashboard”. It was recommended that the engineering and operations personnel of this manufacturing plant be trained in asset management principles and that balanced scorecards are developed to ensure that the strategies of the various departments are aligned with the business strategy. Diagram 1 best illustrates the thinking and process flow of this research. The flow diagram shows five distinct stages and the appropriate objectives and/ or elements that were considered. The dissertation is also structured in this manner. All abbreviations, acronyms and definitions used in this document were listed in APPENDIX B

Abstract:
Digitalization has given rise to new opportunities for small and medium-sized video game development studios. No longer bound by physical products and creative restrains, the de-veloper has been empowered with independency. This qualitative study is aimed to under-stand how a development studio develops their business model and how underlying strate-gy is formulated. Additionally we evaluate the degree of innovativeness of the business model in terms of radical and incremental innovation according to Damanpour (1991). To achieve this we present a comprehensive literature review as to gain a more theoretical un-derstanding of industry mechanics and to be able to comprehend reasoning behind existing business models. We structure the dynamics of the business model by analyzing nine busi-ness model aspects as suggested by Osterwalder, Pigneur and Clark (2010). Following our theoretical framework we gain practical input from four separate case studies. An interpret-ative research method is used to gain better understanding of reasoning and choices made. We interpret our findings following a narrative approach which shows that the digitaliza-tion has preluded a paradigm shift in the sense that development studios have started to adopt activities otherwise performed by key partners. As barriers dissipate small and me-dium-sized development studios try to make sense of the current industry, but struggle in doing so. Having to reinvent themselves we conclude that a focus towards creating thicker customer relationships is considered and the idea of seeing games as a service is acknowl-edged to depict the future of the industry. The conclusions of this study contribute to both academic science and industry practice.

Abstract:
This work provides a solid theoretical base on philanthropy, religious giving (Islamic zakat, ‘ushour, Waqf -plural: awqaf-, Sadaqa and Christian tithes or ‘ushour), and their implications on giving trends, development work, social justice philanthropy. The field study (quantitative and qualitative) that supports the theoretical framework reflects at a national level the Egyptian public’s perceptions on philanthropy, social justice, human rights, giving and volunteering and other concepts that determine the peoples’ civic engagement. The statistics cover 2000 households, 200 Civil Society Organizations distributed all over Egypt and interviews donors, recipients, religious people and other stakeholders. The numbers reflect philanthropic trends and for the first time provide a monetary estimate of local philanthropy of over USD 1 Billion annually. The survey proves that the per capita share of philanthropy outweighs the per capita share of foreign economic assistance to Egypt, which implies the significance of local giving if properly channeled, and not as it is actually consumed in the vicious circle of ad-hoc, person to person charity. In addition, the study relates local giving mechanisms derived from religion and culture to modern actual structures, like community foundations or community waqf that could bring about sustainable change in the communities. In sum, the work provides a comprehensive scientific base to help understand- and build on local philanthropy in Egypt. It explores the role that local individual giving could play in achieving sustainable development and building a new wave of community foundations not only in Egypt but in the Arab region at large. As a tangible result of this thesis, an innovative model that revives the concept of waqf and builds on the study’s results was created by the researcher and a dedicated board of trustees who succeeded in establishing Waqfeyat al Maadi Community Foundation (WMCF) that not only introduces the community foundation model to Egypt, but revives and modernizes the waqf as a practical authentic philanthropic structure.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis seeks to analyse, on the one hand, the integration and development of the new technologies in the Administration of Justice; and, on the other, the parameters which constitute the validity and efficiency of the electronic document.
The first question centres on the configuration of the Information Systems of the Judicial Office and the Public Prosecutor, as well as the computerisation of the Civil Registers, where the art. 230 LOPJ it's the part key. Their programmes, applications, the Video Conferencing, the judicial registers and the telecommunication networks which are covered by the recognised electronic signatures, are studied, where the agreements on technological collaboration gain great relevance. The digitalisation of evidence might perhaps be one of the questions with most consequence, bearing in mind that the judgment is the act by which the process is culminated. Although not all the projects adopted within the compass of e.justice have developed completely nor have reached all the judicial organs. The final objective is to achieve an agile, quality Justice, to which the recently approved Strategic Plan for the Modernisation of Justice aspires.
With reference to the second perspective, there is no doubt that the juridical Ordinance and the tribunals within the compass of material justice grant full validity and efficacy to the electronic document. Our line of investigation is justified because there are more and more processes which are sustained by electronic supports of all kinds, whether it be at the establishment of the action or later, as a proof of it (art. 299.2 LEC). Amongst other things, we examine the computerised document, the problems which surround the fax, the systems for video recording and the electronic contract.

Generally, traders use the technical analysis indicator to constitute their strategies as the criteria of buy or sell in the financial market. On the contrary, whether investors can construct the trading strategies via reversal direction by utilizing the transaction data of price trend or find the strategies behind according to the transaction points. For this reason, this study tries to find out the optimum technical analysis indicator strategies including stop-profit and stop-loss by using the data-driven method. In order to avoid skipping the particular parameters combination while searching and equilibrate the trade-off between the search speed and the search exactness, this paper employs the membership function of fuzzy theory as fuzzy processing on the transaction point. This research constructs a system on the basis of the developed algorithms in the cause of finding the best strategy via systematized reverse direction. This system is designed by using UML(Unified Modeling Language) tools and developed by VBA(Visual Basic for Application). Through the known strategy module, peaks and bottoms of index module, and public strategy module, we verify the usability and feasibility of the developed system.

To construct a classification model to classify the future observations is an important issue in many fields. For the real-world data, the number of observations in each class is usually not the same, that is, the number of data in a particular class may significantly greater or smaller than that of other classes. Such a data is called imbalanced data. When a classification model is established for the imbalanced data, the classifier tends to classify most of the data into the majority class, results in high prediction accuracy, low prediction accuracy of the minority class. However, the prediction accuracy of the minority class is concerned in many cases. Hence to enhance the prediction accuracy of the minority class is very important. Many studies used try-and-error or synthetic minority algorithm to under-sampling or over- sampling the observations of majority and minority class, however, these method are not effective. In the first stage, the Dual Response Surface Methodology (DRSM) is utilized to find an optimal resampling strategy for the majority class and the minority class. In the second stage, using the optimal resampling strategy to adjust the number of observations in the majority and minority classes. The synthetic minority algorithm, Majority Weighted Minority Oversampling Technique (MWMOTE) is employed increasing the observations of minority class and the one-side selection to reduce the number of observation of majority class. Therefore, the objective of this study is to develop a two-stage resampling strategy for classifying the imbalanced data. Using the adjusted data of the minority and the majority classes to construct an effective classification model. The accuracy rate of classifying the observation in the minority class can significantly be improved. At last, two datasets from the website are used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

According to the statistics of Wide Intellectual Patent Office, WIPO, the data resources that predict effectively the change of technology are three: published documents, the seminars relative technology discussing, and patent data. Among which, the patent data could be used to look into about 90 to 95% invention outcome all over the world. Other documents and date only 5 to 10%. Patent data could supply plentiful R&D and technological information, using patent data well could shorten time and cost of the research and development. The flash memory card industry has a rapid growth in recent year. Our research find flash card standards in the market aren’t uniform. The reason is that the main design technology doesn’t be confirm. It makes other non-leading-standards companies confused and trying to develop self card standards to hold the leading position in flash cards market. To resolve the cards problem, our research will find the main design technology and discuss the R&D strategy of the flash cards firms with patent data analysis. For subjective measuring the technological development, our research extra the memory card main technology in using factor analysis. After that, we develop several patent indicators to measure the firms in flash memory cards industry. We make use of cluster analysis and multi-dimensional scaling method to study the R&D strategies of the firms. The research result shows the main design technology of flash memory cards closely linked to the leading standards companies. Other non-leading-standards companies have much input in non- main design technologies. Most non-leading-standards companies select and adopt the technological strategies of the leading standards companies.

With the growth of Social Media、Video Streaming and On-line game, government and global companies are building more and more datacenters to meet the demand for cloud service. High-speed cables are playing the role of linking up to the severs、switches and routers in these datacenters. As the demand for cloud service, these high-speed cables are expected to expand its bandwidth to provide data transmission with higher speed、stable working、high reliability and low power consumption. However, conventional passive copper cable is limited by its physical signal attenuation and reach of length. Passive copper cables may be replaced by active optical cables(AOCs) because these datacenters need higher speed、higher density and more levels of signal modulation of data transmission. In other words, passive copper cables are going to give way to AOCs in high-speed cable market. To provide a general understanding of AOCs, this study will firstly introduce the origin and status of AOCs by its structure、key components、advance technology and industry chain. Then we will analyze the core technology and operation strategy of the target company with the BCG matrix. Meanwhile, the Porter five forces analysis and patent portfolios of the AOC market will also be proposed. Finally, this study will provide a list of high potential product and three years of technical development plan base on a S.W.O.T analysis of the target company. By taking H company as an example, this study would like to provide a technical development plan to conventional copper cable makers. So these copper cable makers could have a way to get into the AOC market efficiently and satisfy their current customers with more alternatives. As a result, conventional copper cable makers could keep their market and provide more solutions to relative application with their new core of optical communication.

With the advent of cloud computing and the era of big data, the construction of data center computer facilities has continued to grow throughout the world, and running those new computer facilities also results in relatively huge power consumption. Therefore, improving efficiency of power conversion becomes more and more important to newly-built data centers. In terms of power conversion, high-voltage direct current (HVDC) power systems have much higher efficiency than the traditional architecture of converting alternating current (AC) to low-voltage direct current (DC) (AC to 48Vdc) in data center applications. HVDC power systems can effectively reduce power consumption of the data center. This thesis focuses on the development of power supply products with the specifications of HVDC required by power systems for data center. First, basing on the collected global market data and further analysis, it is possible to estimate the trend that power industry for data center is growing steadily and output power is increasing as well. Second, by analyzing the facets of HVDC power supply systems with respect to its commercial specifications, regulations, patents, and so forth to serve as the basis in product planning and product development. According to aforementioned methodology, an approach of industry analysis is presented. This thesis also analyzes the structure and competitiveness of power supply industry through Porter’s five-force analysis, and then uses SWOT analysis to study differences between the business models of the case company and its main competitors in the market. By Integrating both Porter’s five-force and SWOT analysis, this thesis presents another approach of business analysis. In the end, this thesis proposes a set of product development strategies that base on the attributes of product distribution, technical strength in research and development and projected future market trends to create suitable product development blueprint for the case enterprise. The development blueprint includes four-stage product development strategies that enables the case company to adopt the approach with step-by-step progress for short-term (1 year), medium-term (2~3 years), medium-long term (3~4 years) and long-term (4~6 years) periods. It will gradually invest in research and development manpower, purchase more equipment, and completes product development and product certification as per its planning. The estimated results showed that the proposed blueprint of research, design and business strategies could be applied to the case company or other similar corporates in the world to effectively enlarge their market share in the segment of power solutions for data center.

In the past, competitive advantage could be sustained by offering high quality products at a low-cost; now, however, even products with excellent quality need to be empowered by brands so as to enhance their indistinguishability from the brands of competitors. The establishment of a strong brand cannot be accomplished within a short time. Effective brand value requires not only building the brand image, but also having appropriate marketing resources to reinforce the brand image in the consumer’s mind. An optimal strategy of brand development must be based on each developmental stage of marketing. Although many enterprises understand the importance of brand, they find it difficult to understand the development stages. This study is based on the theory of the brand equity pyramid. It uses transactional data provided by information technology (IT) and then adopts a data mining tool, the SPSS Chlementine 12.0 software, to analyze the data. The purpose is to help enterprises recognize the stage of development they are at with regard to brand image. With the help of marketing and brand experts, the study searches out the measurement factors for each item in the brand equity pyramid, and then sets up and suggests strategies of brand development for enterprises by taking into consideration various factors. According to the results of data analysis, the brand equity pyramid and the association rules can be combined to design a consumer questionnaire for investigation. By way of consumer opinion, we can understand the relationships between the association rules and each stage of the brand equity pyramid; furthermore, we can determine the status quo of present brand development. The study takes Chu-Hsin Beauty and Hairdressing Salon as an example. It analyzes the association rules based on daily transactional data provided by the salon and discuss the results. It then tries to understand the status quo of brand development from the results of the consumer questionnaire. Based on the expert questionnaire, the study determines the corresponding measurement factors of brand equity at different stages of brand development, and offers strategic suggestions to build the Chu-Hsin brand. In this way, it helps Chu-Hsin to understand the status quo of their brand development and improve those stages which are weak or underdeveloped. This study has three major objectives: (1) to answer three questions pertaining to brand development for Chu-Hsin Beauty and Hairdressing Salon; (2) to determine the relationships between the questionnaire items and find the measurement factors in the brand equity pyramid; (3) to derive association rules for Chu-Hsin Beauty by way of an expert questionnaire and association rule analysis.

The number of students passing computer programming modules at Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in South Africa at first year level is low. Only with the second attempt do most students pass. This delay results in students completing their three-year undergraduate qualification in four or even five years. One potential contribution towards addressing this problem is the introduction of a collaborative (cooperative) pedagogical approach where students develop software in teams, known in the Information Technology (IT) sector as pair-programming. This study endeavoured to investigate the impact of pair-programming on the academic progress of students registered for the Information Technology qualification at HEIs in South Africa. The study warranted the selection of action research as the most appropriate research strategy. Multi-methods data collection was carried out over two consecutive semesters. The data collection methods included a semi-structured interview, observations and empirical assessment. The participants were students registered for the Information Systems module, which focuses on software development. Pair-programming was introduced to one group of software development students, while a second group continued with the normal solo-programming approach. Semi-structured interviews were held with the students before commencement and after completion of the pair-programming intervention, to establish a change, if any, in the academic performance, attitude and enjoyment level of students introduced to pair-programming compared to those who continued with solo-programming. Observations were conducted throughout the course of the practical sessions over both semesters. Empirical assessments were done by means of tests given to both groups of students during the practical sessions, three tests per semester. Data analysis techniques included t-tests and thematic analysis. The findings concluded that pair-programming had a significant positive impact on the academic progress of IT students, including an increase in the enjoyment level and a more positive attitude towards software development.

Abstract:
The objective of Lisbon Strategy was to make the European Union in the most competitive knowledge-based economy in the entire world, capable of ensuring sustainable economic growth with more and better jobs and greater social cohesion. The strategy highlights the fundamental role of innovation policies so that objectives can be achieved. The reforms include making R&D a top priority, promoting the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) and increase the investments in education. What this work proposes is an analysis of the relationship between innovation and economic growth in the first decade of the XXI century using a panel of 14 European Union countries that signed the treaty. The main objective is to quantify the impact of the measures of the Lisbon Strategy in the field of innovation. Estimations have been carried out using fixed-effects (FE) and Arellano-Bond GMM estimator. The findings suggest that innovation (through R&D, patents, and education) has a small effect in economic growth during the Lisbon Strategy. With FE, the R&D has a small effect in Gross Domestic Product per capita and with GMM the result is negative. The problem may arise from the time lag between the investments in R&D and education and the emerging of innovation. The economic crisis also contributed to the decrease of investments in innovation and education.

Abstract:
A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor in Information Management, specialization in Geographic Information Systems
The Agenda 2030 challenges the countries to use and produce new spatial data to support the path to Sustainable Development (SD). This requires development and adoption of Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI), and the production of new relevant spatial data to support implementation, monitoring and reporting the progress on the targets on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The importance of access to spatial data for development and resource management is widely acknowledged worldwide. Unrestricted, reliable and efficient access to accurate, timely, and upto- date spatial data may be achieved through a Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI). Thus, most developed countries implemented and continue to develop their SDI. The Ecosystem Service (ES) is also crucially for SD and the concept needs to be expressed and communicated effectively to be successfully integrated into decision making. This study assessed the challenges and opportunities on SDI development and analyzed the documents relevant to LUP process and implementation. On the SDI, we identified and characterized through a survey the government institutions producing, sharing, and using spatial data in the country to estimate their potential contribution to the development of the Mozambican SDI. On the integration of ES into LUP, we conducted a review of relevant documents to Mozambique’s spatial planning by performing a content analysis based on ES categories. Based on the possible contribution of the institutions producing and using spatial data, we proposed an SDI for Mozambique based on four pillars: i) organizational framework; ii) legal framework; iii) technical framework; and iv) accessibility. The periodical revision of tools and participatory approaches in LUP opens opportunities for integrating ES into LUP processes. This integration could be achieved by establishing a SEA legal framework based on LUP and Environment legal frameworks assisted by a set of common planning tools that consider ES as an additional indicator applied to spatial planning in Mozambique.

Information and communications technology (ICT) has proved to be a significant tool for both private and public sectors in the enhancement of service delivery. Organisations need to identify the socio-economic, political and technological needs that would help them to strengthen their business positions in order to remain competitive in the globalised economy. To achieve this goal, organisations need to accelerate the ICT skills (e-skills) development within their settings. However, there is a general lack of e-skills within South Africa. Further still, there is also lack of standards that could be followed in the development of these skills. This calls for a contextualised framework to guide e-skills development within the South African private and public sectors. The goal of this study was to use a balanced scorecard to develop a framework that could be used to align e-skills development with the strategic business objectives of the Limpopo Provincial Government of South Africa.
