Abstract:
Disinformation and so-called fake news are contemporary phenomena with rich histories. Disinformation, or the willful introduction of false information for the purposes of causing harm, recalls infamous foreign interference operations in national media systems. Outcries over fake news, or dubious stories with the trappings of news, have coincided with the introduction of new media technologies that disrupt the publication, distribution and consumption of news -- from the so-called rumour-mongering broadsheets centuries ago to the blogosphere recently. Designating a news organization as fake, or der Lügenpresse, has a darker history, associated with authoritarian regimes or populist bombast diminishing the reputation of 'elite media' and the value of inconvenient truths. In a series of empirical studies, using digital methods and data journalism, the authors inquire into the extent to which social media have enabled the penetration of foreign disinformation operations, the widespread publication and spread of dubious content as well as extreme commentators with considerable followings attacking mainstream media as fake.

Houle, Christian. Does Inequality Harm Economic Development and Democracy? Edited by Carol Lancaster and Nicolas van de Walle. Oxford University Press, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199845156.013.4.

Full text
Abstract:
This article examines whether economic inequality undermines economic development and democracy in the long run. After reviewing the literature on the effect of inequality on economic development and democracy, it considers three approaches that have been put forward to explain why inequality harms the economy and democracy: (1) the political economy approach, (2) the social unrest approach, and (3) the credit market imperfections approach. A complete data set on inequality is generated using three measures of inequality: the capital share data set of Ortega and Rodriguez (2006), the Gini coefficients data set of Solt (2009), and the income Gini coefficients of the “Estimated Household Income Inequality” (EHII) data set, developed by the University of Texas Inequality Project (UTIP). The article then tests the relationship between inequality and democracy using dynamic probit models.

Abstract:
This chapter explores how property emerges as a moral convention. Several laboratory experiments on property in its nascence are used to understand this process. A key feature of these economics experiments is that the participants can chat in real time with one another regarding their activities. These candid conversations in the heat of the moment make up the data by which I explain how anonymous strangers in a group become just by mutually respecting what is mine and what is thine. The dialogue also illustrates what it means for someone to be unjust, namely, inflicting real and positive harm on others. As a window into the minds of the participants, the language further supports Adam Smith’s claim that the resentment of harm undergirds our moral sense of property. We become just in terms of respecting the boundaries of property through the fellow feeling of the ill desert of harm.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on the basic principles of research design. It first considers different types of research design, including experimental designs, cross-sectional and longitudinal designs, comparative designs, and historical research designs. It also discusses two types of research validity: internal validity and external validity. The chapter proceeds by describing various methods of data collection and the sort of data or evidence each provides, including questionnaires and surveys, interviewing and focus groups, ethnographic research, and discourse/content analysis. Finally, it examines six issues that must be taken into account to ensure ethical research: voluntary participation, informed consent, privacy, harm, exploitation, and consequences for future research.

Abstract:
The chapter describes ways of understanding, predicting, and managing suicidality and self-harm in people with severe and enduring mental illness in contact with community outreach teams. Data on incidence are presented with evidence on associations with factors such as demographics, diagnosis, co-morbidity, and life events as a way of identifying risk factors. Validated tools and frameworks for assessment are presented and critiqued with research evidence for the effectiveness of interventions. The chapter concludes with a case study, care plan, and risk management plan of a man whose life has been devastated by psychotic illness.

Abstract:
Each Concentrate revision guide is packed with essential information, key cases, revision tips, exam Q&As, and more. Concentrates show you what to expect in a law exam, what examiners are looking for, and how to achieve extra marks. This chapter examines confidentiality as a fundamental aspect of doctor–patient relationships: its ethical basis and equitable, contractual, and tortious obligations. It then considers the law governing access to medical records and statute that necessitates fair and lawful processing of sensitive personal data, and the new EU General Data Protection Regulation aimed at harmonising data protection legislation. It discusses exceptions to the duty of confidentiality, including explicit and implied consent, prevention of harm to others, police investigation, public interests, and press freedom. The chapter considers confidentiality with respect to children; adults who lack capacity and deceased patients; remedies available for breach of confidence; access to electronic patient records; and issues raised by genetics-related information.

Full text
Abstract:
The use of herbal and traditional Chinese medicine during pregnancy has become very common worldwide. It is important to be aware of their effects and precautions, and that the evidence base to support claims for efficacy is very weak. Standards of quality and potency for many of the available products do not exist. Commonly used remedies include ginger root, cranberry, St John’s wort, raspberry leaf, castor oil, and blue cohosh. With the exception of ginger, there is currently not enough data to support the use of any other herbal supplements during pregnancy. For some, such as blue cohosh, there is clear evidence of harm and they should be avoided.

Merry, Alan F. Errors and Violations. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780199366149.003.0003.

Full text
Abstract:
Errors and violations are major contributors to iatrogenic harm in patients. Anesthesia is a complex process within the complex system that is healthcare. In complex systems, decisions need to be reviewed frequently and iteratively with reset baseline data. Errors are unintentional and cannot be avoided simply by trying harder or deterred by the threat of punishment; violations, on the other hand, are deliberate deviations from safe practice. Types of error are statistically predictable, and can be understood in relation to the cognitive processes involved in their generation: either System I thinking, or System II thinking. Safety depends on doing the right things correctly the first time, using a systems-based approach (drawing lessons from aviation and other high-reliability industries) within a just culture.

Abstract:
Biosensors and biosensing practices collect and share living data, data concerning changes in body states. Health biosensing emerges where devices, health experience, scientific and medical knowledges and online platforms meet around bodies. This book contrasts forms of health biosensing in significant life events ranging from conception to ageing. It explores practicalities, histories and promises of fertility and hormonal biosensing, stress biosensing, DNA genotyping platforms, and old-age biosensing. While the biosensing industries promote promise-horizons of the ‘soon’, ethnographic stories of failure and disappointment abound. ‘Living data’ may be about health for many people, but still happens mostly outside biomedicine or clinical practice. Yet biosensing has the potential to change human bodies and lives in barely imagined ways. This book argues for thinking about biosensing platforms and bodies together to understand that potential and to recognise harms and limitations.

Abstract:
Advice for pregnant women on food avoidance, dangerous exposures, and inappropriate behaviours abounds on the internet and through various information sources. This chapter reviews the evidence base for such advice and clarifies issues where common advice is not supported by credible data. Foods containing potential teratogens, mutagens, or toxicants that need consideration include liver (high vitamin A), some herbal teas, contaminated grains, predatory fish, caffeine-containing foods, and various sources of foodborne infections. Exposure to environmental toxicants such as lead, pesticides, herbicides, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, bisphenol-A, and other endocrine-disrupting chemicals should be avoided, as should alcohol consumption and cigarette smoking. Restrictive diets and unusual dietary cravings (pica) need to be properly managed. Evidence for harm from personal care products is generally weak, but pregnant women may choose to avoid some unnecessary exposures.
