Huffaker, Ray, Marco Bittelli, and Rodolfo Rosa. Nonlinear Time Series Analysis with R. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198782933.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
In the process of data analysis, the investigator is often facing highly-volatile and random-appearing observed data. A vast body of literature shows that the assumption of underlying stochastic processes was not necessarily representing the nature of the processes under investigation and, when other tools were used, deterministic features emerged. Non Linear Time Series Analysis (NLTS) allows researchers to test whether observed volatility conceals systematic non linear behavior, and to rigorously characterize governing dynamics. Behavioral patterns detected by non linear time series analysis, along with scientific principles and other expert information, guide the specification of mechanistic models that serve to explain real-world behavior rather than merely reproducing it. Often there is a misconception regarding the complexity of the level of mathematics needed to understand and utilize the tools of NLTS (for instance Chaos theory). However, mathematics used in NLTS is much simpler than many other subjects of science, such as mathematical topology, relativity or particle physics. For this reason, the tools of NLTS have been confined and utilized mostly in the fields of mathematics and physics. However, many natural phenomena investigated I many fields have been revealing deterministic non linear structures. In this book we aim at presenting the theory and the empirical of NLTS to a broader audience, to make this very powerful area of science available to many scientific areas. This book targets students and professionals in physics, engineering, biology, agriculture, economy and social sciences as a textbook in Nonlinear Time Series Analysis (NLTS) using the R computer language.

Mason, James, Raymond M. Brach, and Matthew Brach. Vehicle Accident Analysis and Reconstruction Methods. 3rd ed. SAE International, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.4271/9781468603453.

Full text
Abstract:
In this third edition of Vehicle Accident Analysis & Reconstruction Methods, Raymond M. Brach and R. Matthew Brach have expanded and updated their essential work for professionals in the field of accident reconstruction. Most accidents can be reconstructed effectively using of calculations and investigative and experimental data: the authors present the latest scientific, engineering, and mathematical reconstruction methods, providing a firm scientific foundation for practitioners. Accidents that cannot be reconstructed using the methods in this book are rare. In recent decades, the field of crash reconstruction has been transformed through the use of technology. The advent of event data records (EDRs) on vehicles signaled the era of modern crash reconstruction, which utilizes the same physical evidence that was previously available as well as electronic data that are measured/captured before, during, and after the collision. There is increased demand for more professional and accurate reconstruction as more crash data is available from vehicle sensors. The third edition of this essential work includes a new chapter on the use of EDRs as well as examples using EDR data in accident reconstruction. Early chapters feature foundational material that is necessary for the understanding of vehicle collisions and vehicle motion; later chapters present applications of the methods and include example reconstructions. As a result, Vehicle Accident Analysis & Reconstruction Methods remains the definitive resource in accident reconstruction.

Lederer, Gregor. Rocket Engine on a Student Budget. Technische Universität Dresden, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.25368/2022.406.

Full text
Abstract:
A technical project alongside the University courses can deepen the understanding and increase the motivation for the subject of choice. As a student, there is often a hurdle to start such a project because of a lack of inspiration. And even after overcoming this, the costs associated with such a project may put students off. With my project I show how a 3rd semester Mechanical Engineering student can design and manufacture a rocket engine with all testing components on a student budget. Cost structure and resource planning are explained in detail. I launched the project in December 2020 and in September 2021 it was presented at the StuFoExpo21. A general curiosity for the topic and a basic understanding of mechanical engineering was sufficient for starting the project. Importantly, I gained the most valuable knowledge during the implementation of the project, through active failure-iteration and reading specialised literature. The project is focussed on the design and manufacturing of a rocket engine and its testing components. A special feature is the cooling jacket of the combustion chamber. It has been 3D printed in the SLUB Makerspace, a facility at TU Dresden. Further work packages of the project were the programming of sensors and control systems, first open-air combustion tests of the injector head, safety checks and a Risk & Safety analysis. The first testing and other preliminary work were performed in collaboration with fellow students. During the entire design and manufacturing process I was in continuous exchange with the research group “Space Transportation” of the Institute of Aerospace Engineering at TU Dresden. Special thanks go to Dipl.-Ing. Jan Sieder-Katzmann and Dipl.-Ing. Maximilian Buchholz for their help during this process. For 2022 I plan a test campaign of the rocket engine to collect sensor data and to perform engine thrust measurements.

Abstract:
The monograph will be useful for scientists, designers, engineers whose activities are related to the improvement of technical, economic and operational indicators of non-traction rolling stock at various stages of its life cycle. In particular, the issue of the possibility and expediency of introducing various types of constructive hierarchy of components in the design of wagons. What can happen when creating new models of them or modernizing existing ones. To date, the traditional approach to creating a structure of freight wagons from steel has almost completely exhausted the potential for improving their technical, economic and operational indicators. At the same time, the experience of the development of composite materials and technologies for their creation in other branches of light and heavy engineering and instrument building indicates the prospect of deploying relevant research and development works on the use of such materials in railcar construction. The purpose of the monograph is to highlight the results obtained from the creation of conceptual solutions for the manufacture of component load-carrying systems of freight wagons from composites. The book also presents the results of previous works of a theoretical and practical nature. In particular, given. Analysis of the constructive perfection of truck wagons of the modern domestic vehicle by type. Features of calculations of conceptual solutions for manufacturing non-sowing systems cargo wagons made of composites. Concepts for freight wagons made of composites. The book can be used as a study guide for the preparation of bachelors, masters, doctors of philosophy and doctors of sciences in various specialties of transport mechanics. Including from specialties: railway transport, transport technologies, mechanical engineering, materials science and others.
