Abstract:
The original location of the Danish rune stones The rune stones have always constituted an important source concerning the Viking Age. However, from the establishment of the humanities and the empirical specialisation in the 19th century until c. 1980, the inscriptions have been the main focus. Recently, a more overall, interdisciplinary approach has been adapted in the study of the rune stones. And whereas the inscriptions are the main source for the philologists, landscape archaeology is most suited for the study of the original location of the rune stones. This article presents aspects concerning the original location of the Danish rune stones. The material is presented using two key words, which the author finds central to the attempt to pin down what was important to that age, namely monumentality, and visibility. After that she discusses the possible relation between Danish rune stones and special sites, primarily thing sites, burial sites, and large farms. The choice of these particular categories are based on a comparison with Swedish conditions. The treatment of the question about the association with special sites may be seen as a movement from the actual source material to the mental landscape of the time.Rather more than 200 rune and picture stones are known from Viking Age Denmark, i.e. the present Denmark and Southern Schleswig, Scania, and Halland, but exclusive Bornholm (Fig. 1). Only twelve of these are still in their assumed original location: The Ø. Løgum-stone in South Jutland (DR 15), and the Färlöv-stone in Scania, both erected during the Early Viking Age; the Glavendrup-stone (DR 209) erected on Northwest Funen during the first part of the 10th century; and the following from the time between c.950 and 1050 – the time span in which most rune stones were erected in Denmark. In Jutland, these are Bække 2 (DR 30), Randbøl (DR 40), Jelling 2 (DR 42), and Sjellebro; and in Scania: Fuglie 1 (DR 259), V. Karaby (DR 321), V. Strö 1 and 2 (DR 334 and 335), and Ö. Vemmenhög (DR 268). Add to these the Malt-stone, originally located by the Kongeå River; and the Snoldelevstone (DR 248) on East Sealand, the original locations of which are known, albeit they are now in the Sønderskov Museum and the National Museum, respectively. In the case of another 64 rune stones, the original location may be pointed out with more or less certainty and precision. These 78 rune stones, about which we have some – more or less precise - information (as opposed to a guessed location), thus make up our her source material. To summarize, the material unambiguously points towards monumentality, visibility, and exposure having been the decisive factors to the rune stone erectors when choosing a location for their monument. The connection with large mounds, stone settings, bridges, and – as is the case with a couple of later stones – stone churches (Lund 2, DR 315 and Nr. Åsum, DR 347) is marked, as is the proximity to what is supposed to be long road stretches and communication points. Also, older monuments such as burial mounds and rock carvings seem to have constituted important links to the past, to the ancestors, and to the tradition. Both the Glavendrup- monument, Klebæk Høje with the Bække-stone 2, and the ship setting in Jelling involved older mounds within the newly established monument, just as the new Christian monument of Harald Bluetooth combined tradition and renewal in a sophisticated manner. At the same time, it is characteristic that the rune stones – and monuments altogether – carried a message meant for the posterity, which was the whole idea behind making them. The material used for the rune stones – granite – symbolises constancy, if anything; the use of inscriptions is another way of securing against oblivion, and as a third and further emphasis of the historical character, the memory inscriptions were often followed by a memory formula (for instance Randbøl DR 40: May these runes for Thorgun live long) or a curse protecting the monument. This very preserving quality of the rune stones – and the motion towards a society with a written language – may have been the seed of the rune stones being increasingly used as a form of legal documents in connection with inheritance, boundaries, etc. Both aspects are known to a limited extent from Danish rune stones (such as the mentioned Gunderup 1), and to a larger degree within the late Norwegian and Swedish rune stone material. This function may also have been attached to the thing sites, where public and binding declarations were made. Not surprisingly, when encircling the message of the rune stones, the preservation of the memorial for the posterity is central. That is its explicit message. Apart from this, the very act of erecting a stone and the person or persons behind this, were essential to the custom. The social act of erecting a stone in memory of a deceased reflects pride, honour, and duty. The location of the stone stresses the fact that visibility and publicity and the coupling of the past and the future were decisive factors to the or Viking Age humans who were looking for a suitable location for their rune stone.Gunhild Øeby NielsenInstitut for Antropologi, Arkæologi ogLingvistik, Aarhus UniversitetTranslated by Annette Lerche Trolle

Abstract:
Pomijały jednocześnie szerszy kontekst historyczny i ideowy, usuwając z pola refleksji takie spokrewnione zjawiska równoległe, jak chociażby estetyka twórczości Camille’a Saint-Saënsa. W dalszej części moich rozważań omawiam kwestię dostrzegalnej u Żeleńskiego świadomej afirmacji postawy konserwatywnej i eklektyzmu stylistycznego. Do podręczników swojego autorstwa włączył przykłady muzyczne z twórczości Wagnera.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
English Abstract: This brief article reviews two main contributions by the French sociologist Louis Dumont, his essay “World Renunciation in Indian Religions” and his major work on the Indian caste system, Homo Hierarchicus. Some of the critique of Dumont’s ideas about renunciation, hierarchy and purity is discussed with special focus on three points: (1) The creative role of renunciation in the history of Hinduism; (2) the Indian caste system as a hierarchy regulated according to ritual purity and the alternative model by A. M. Hocart of the Indian society as a ritual organization; and (3) theoretical discussions regarding the need to go beyond the purity-impurity dichotomy and integrate another opposition, that between the auspicious and the inauspicious, in order to develop a more precise analytical tool in the research of Hindu culture.

Abstract:
x, 91 p. : ill., music
In this study I examine representations of antisemitism, fantasy, and cultural imperialism in the 1864 ballet The Little Humpbacked Horse, composed by Cesare Pugni and choreographed by Arthur Saint-Leon. As the creative team adapted the story from verse to ballet, they literally morphed the titular character into new fantastical forms. They also added Jewish, Muslim, and other oriental characters and ended the ballet with a parade of the Russian nations. Drawing on the works of Richard S. Wortman, Julie Kalman, and Roger Bartra, I place these transformations in the context of a larger Russian ambivalence around the shift from a rural and woodland economy to an urban one, the inclusion of Eastern provinces in the rapidly expanding nation, and the emancipation – and inclusion of – internal minorities. I then explain how the music, choreography, and focus of the ballet change as the relevance of these mid-nineteenth century concerns fades.

Abstract:
William Serrano-Franklin presents an interview with Assane Konte, the co-founder of a Washington, D.C. dance institution, Kankouran West African Dance Company (KWADC). Accompanied by a series of historical photographs, Serrano-Franklin documents Konte’s desire to reintroduce black Americans to West African culture through the medium of dance. Konte’s personal direction and the spirit of Kankouran have guided the development of dynamic community engagement practices with benefits beyond dance as an art form.

Abstract:
The chapter examines the characteristics of the Indonesian migrant community in Hong Kong apart from serving as an outlet for socializing and relaxing. It documents the visibility of same-sex relationships among the pop dance groups in the migrant community. The author then discusses the sexual ideologies that circulate in these dance groups, including the fashion shows for tomboys (tomboi) and girls (cewek) respectively, the kin world established by the dance groups, and the satisfaction and meanings obtained from their same-sex relationships. The discussion includes how the women evaluate men, particularly Indonesian men, South Asian men, and Hong Kong men. It is noteworthy that their new experiences of same-sex intimacy in Hong Kong reshape their past experiences and relationship with their husband or boyfriend in Indonesia.

Abstract:
Having won his fame with psycho-actioners, Dante Lam also tried forging new ground with the sports-based dramas, but it was main melody crime thriller Operation Mekong that brought him to the fore in the mainland market. His subsequent project, Operation Red Sea, one of the highest-grossing films in China, was a new kind of military-patriotic action film. Thanks to its astronomical budget and the support of the Chinese Navy, Lam managed to devise the most propulsive battle scenes ever allowed on mainland screens. Together with Operation Mekong and Rescue, the Operation trilogy paid contemporary tribute to China’s military power. Based on the trajectory of Lam’s career in Hong Kong, this chapter explores how the Hong Kong director effectively developed this new main melody genre.

Abstract:
Abstract This chapter suggests that kung fu films should be examined as a “body genre.” Positioning kung fu films as a body genre promoting visceral responses starts to explain how these films had such a dramatic impact on audiences, and subsequently led to the genre’s memorable fandom in b-boy culture. The chapter shows that kung fu films should be added to the cinematic aesthetics of breaking battles and choreographed routines in New York City. By foregrounding how the films were distributed and exhibited, the chapter demonstrates how a film’s context shapes its reception. It also offers insights into how these films informed the lives and dance practices of some New York City b-boys, and situates a meeting between a legend of Hip Hop culture and a kung fu film star in Hong Kong.

Abstract:
Abstract This chapter documents the cultural origins, dissemination, musical characteristics, and development of mic-shouting (hanmai), a local style of electronic dance music (EDM) that was developed in Hong Kong and China. It also assesses mic-shouting’s local distinctiveness vis-à-vis core Western EDM, cultural hybridity, and positive sociopolitical meanings. The chapter has two theoretical objectives. The first is to help bridge the research gap on non-Western local EDM. Scholars have discovered and discussed local EDM styles in South America, Central and Eastern Europe, and Africa, but rarely those in China. The second objective is to explore the cultural legitimization of non-Western EDM. It finds that this cultural legitimization can proceed through the investigation of the historical development, local distinctiveness, hybridity, and sociopolitical progressiveness of the non-Western EDM style in question. This chapter illustrates that a research program on the histories of local EDM from various cultures, regions, nations, and localities will be fruitful.

Abstract:

Abstract:
When collective protest develops in the streets and occupied squares, it becomes not simply a demand for democracy addressed to the disputed power but an affirmation of democracy effectively implemented. —Jacques Rancière As another cycle of collective protest reverberated around the globe in recent years, crowds again took to the streets and public squares of cities from Santiago to Beirut, from Hong Kong to Baghdad, claiming their elected representatives do not, in fact, represent them. In the United States, the largest protest movement in its history—the Movement for Black Lives—drew between fifteen to twenty-six million people into the streets of hundreds of different cities and towns, and did so in the middle of a global pandemic’s demand for social distancing. The local grievances which triggered these uprisings vary widely—an increase in the price of public transportation, a tax on a popular messaging service, a revised extradition law, searing examples of racist police violence—but all express dismay and disgust at the economic and political inequalities of the existing system of representative government and a common demand to return political power to the people themselves. “Our government is a government of thugs!” “Chile woke up!” “There are no rioters, only a tyrannical regime!” The figurative space opened up by a widespread crisis of democratic legitimacy once again filled the streets with multitudes banging pots and pans, occupying public buildings and squares, building barricades, and throwing improvised dance parties celebrating the coming fall of the regime. Amid the proliferation of ever-new technologies enabling virtual forms of assembly, political participation, and “preference ...

Abstract:
