The Lost Academic Legacy of Ignacy DaniłowiczSummaryIgnacy Daniłowicz occupies a special place among Polish law historians of the first half of the nineteenth century. This profesor of Vilnius, and then Kharkov, Kiev, and Moscow Universities, an expert on Lithuanian and Russian law, the discoverer and publisher of invaluable sources, codifier of municipal law, and translator and bibliographer of the Statutes of Lithuania, fully deserves the admiration of his contemporaries and the memory of posterity. The fate of Daniłowicz’s manuscript legacy is not known. In particular, it is unknown whether the scholar really left an extensive manuscript on the history of Lithuania, as certain sources would seem to suggest. There is no doubt that Daniłowicz lost some of his manuscripts when moving from Moscow to Kiev. After Daniłowicz’s death, the Russian historian Mikhail P. Pogodin was interested in the acquisition of his surviving papers, but his efforts proved unsuccessful. Some of Daniłowicz’s manuscripts had come into the hands of the Polish researchers and collectors Eustachy Tyszkiewicz and Konstanty Świdziński. One example is a document from 1846 preserved among Mikołaj Malinowski’s papers in the Kórnicka Library. Malinowski apparently mediated in the transfer of the Daniłowicz legacy between Świdziński and Tyszkiewicz. The materials submitted to Tyszkiewicz are kept in eight files and cover a total of several hundred pages, and are probably the basis for the publication a few years after Daniłowicz’s death of the famous “Diplomats’ Treasury”.

Pochodzący z Podlasia XIX-wieczny uczony, profesor Uniwersytetu Wileńskiego, a następnie kolejno Charkowskiego, Kijowskiego oraz Moskiewskiego, Ignacy Daniłowicz pozostawił po sobie bogatą i wartościową spuściznę naukową. Prawnik i historyk z wykształcenia, przejawiał też niemałe zdolności językoznawcy i paleografa zafascynowanego językiem ruskich dokumentów do dziejów Litwy. Pracę z nimi niewątpliwie ułatwiała mu znajomość podlaskiej mowy. Główna uwaga w tekście skupiona została na sposobach transponowania na alfabet łaciński Latopisu supraskiego, który powstał na początku XVI wieku jako tekst cyrylicki. Analiza zastosowanych przez Daniłowicza rozwiązań w zakresie transliterowania samogłosek i spółgłosek pokazała dobre opanowanie warsztatu paleografa mimo braku przygotowania językoznawczego.

Reliability of transport equipment in the shaft depends, among other things, on the accuracy of the vertical foundation of the headframe together with elements of the hoisting equipment over the shaft. Any deviations beyond the installation and movement tolerances may cause incorrect or even dangerous operation of the hoisting equipment in the shaft. Therefore the headframe is subjected to periodic inventory measurements, which prevent the movement in the shaft and the smooth operation of the whole underground mine. The Wieliczka Salt Mine developed a project for the installation of precision Nivel 220 two-axis inclinometers on Kinga and Daniłowicz headframes. The paper summarizes the initial conclusions resulting from the first year of the system operation and indicates the directions of its development.

W niniejszym artykule staram się dowieść, że zamiar objęcia władzy w Krakowie przypisany Lwu Daniłowiczowi zarówno w polskich (łacińskich) źródłach, jak i w Kronice halicko-wołyńskiej jest elementem kreowania negatywnego wizerunku kniazia i zniesławiania go, a nie świadectwem rzeczywistych zamiarów kniazia. Polskie źródła były wyraźnie przychylne Leszkowi Czarnemu i dlatego prezentowały Lwa jako uzurpa- tora, jednocześnie monumentalizując obraz wojny. Ruska opowieść o najeździe Lwa na Małopolskę powstała na wołyńskim dworze kniazia Włodzimierza, stryjecznego brata i rywala Lwa. Dlatego zamiar objęcia władzy w Krakowie jest przedstawiony jako wyraz szaleńczej pychy Lwa, za którą został ukarany przez Boga. Kronikarz wołyński przypisał Lwu parę innych nikczemnych i zbrodniczych czynów. Brakuje także przekonujących dowodów, że w Małopolsce istniało sprzyjające Lwu stronnictwo możnowładcze, albo że księżna-wdowa, Kinga, dążyła do oddania Krakowa Lwu. W metryce akademii w Dillingen wpisano w 1623 r. dwa listy polecające opiece rektora Mikołaja i Franciszka, synów Mikołaja Daniłowicza. Autorem pierwszego jest ojciec chłopców, drugiego jezuita Mikołaj Łęczycki. Stały się one podstawą do rozważań o zagranicznej edukacji szlacheckiej, konkretnie o nauce Daniłowiczów. Szczyt znaczenia tej rodziny przypadł na 2 połowę XVI i 1 połowę XVII w., kiedy należeli do elity państwa polsko-litewskiego. Daniłowiczowie uzupełniali edukację poza granicami Rzeczypospolitej. Z racji wyznania wybierali ośrodki jezuickie – Ingolstadt, Dillingen, Lowanium, jeździli także do Włoch. Listy zawierają prośby do rektora o opiekę nad młodzieńcami oraz wskazówki, czego powinni się uczyć i jak należy z nimi postępować. Na końcu zamieszczone są tłumaczenia listów.

SOME REMARKS ON THE STUDY OF THE ROMANIZATION OF LITHUANIAN STATUTESSummary The article is dedicated to the issues connected with the reception of Roman Law in the Lithuanian statutes of 1529, 1566, and 1588. After an analysis of the existing scholarly accomplishments in the field, one cannot but conclude that the study of the influence of the Roman Law on Lithuanian codifications has hardly been started yet. Despite the fairly long tradition of research in this field, so far only selected elements of the first and second statutes have been analyzed in order to identify Roman constituents. The research carried out in 1930s by Raphael Taubenschlag, Franciszek Bossowski, and Karol Koranyi demonstrated which Roman Law noticeably influenced the statutory regulations pertaining to family law, law of property, law of succession, criminal and procedural law. Their observations partly confirmed the findings previously made in the nineteenth century by Aleksander Mickiewicz, Franciszek Morze, and Ignacy Daniłowicz. At the same time, nothing is still known about the scope of Romanization in the third Lithuanian statute or about the transformations which Roman elements underwent in each of the statutes. Without further study of the subject, one cannot assess the role of Roman law in the Commonwealth (Rzeczpospolita).It seems that the most fertile ground for identification of Roman elements in the third Lithuanian statute is tutorship and succession law, especially testamentary succession. Some interesting and original observations could be made on the basis of a more thorough comparative analysis of the pertinent Roman and Lithuanian regulations.

W zbiorach lwowskich zachował się bardzo obszerny rękopis zawierający tekst wykładu na temat prawa polsko-litewskiego. Prawdopodobnie powstał on w końcu lat dwudziestych XIX w. i był dziełem Ignacego Daniłowicza. Tekst wykładu dostarcza okazji do poczynienia licznych obserwacji o zmianach jakich pod wpływem aktów rosyjskich doznało prawo polsko-litewskie w początkach XIX w. Zmiany te objęły w różnym stopniu wszystkie dziedziny prawa.

Background:Cystatins are cysteine proteases-inhibitors secreted byFasciola hepaticain order to modulate the host immune response to promote survival of the parasite. These molecules are able to inhibit different mammal cathepsins, to regulate the immune balance via Th2 and T regulatory responses, to downregulate antigen presentation and the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines (1,2) – mechanisms that are important in the development and maintenance of several immunopathology, as rheumatoid arthritis (RA) (3).Objectives:To evaluate the therapeutic effect of recombinants cystatin 1 and cystatin 3 fromFasciola hepaticain a mice model of collagen-induced arthritis (CIA).Methods:Twenty-seven DBA/1J mice were induced with CIA by an injection of collagen type-II and Freund’s adjuvant at days 0 and 18. Animals were randomly divided into three groups: vehicle (n=9, treated with phosphate-buffered saline), cystatin 1 (n=9, treated with 100 µg/dose of recombinant cystatin 1) and cystatin 3 (n=9, treated with 100 µg/dose of recombinant cystatin 3). Treatment started after day 18 by intraperitoneal injection once a day until the end of the experiment, at day 45 after CIA induction. Clinical arthritis score, nociception, paw edema, body and spleen weight were evaluated. Lymphocytes were isolated from lymph nodes and CD4+CD25+Foxp3+ T regulatory subset was assessed by flow cytometry. Data are expressed as mean ± SEM and were evaluated by one-way or two-way ANOVA followed by Bonferroni post-test.Results:Treatment with cystatin 1 did not alter any of the analyzed parameters. On the other hand, cystatin 3 was able to reduce clinical arthritis score from day 38 with 32% of reduction at day 45 (9.22±1.22) compared to vehicle (13.56±0.73) (p<0.05). In addition, treatment with cystatin 3 diminished nociception (cystatin 3: 4.0±0.36g, vehicle: 2.7±0.32g) (p<0.05) and paw edema (cystatin 3: 0.051±0,012ml, vehicle: 0.093±0.007ml) (p<0.05). Moreover, the treatment did not alter body weight (cystatin 3: 21.67±0.31g, vehicle: 21.05±0.38g) and spleen weight (cystatin 3: 7.04±0.31, vehicle: 7.16±0.38), as well as the T regulatory population (cystatin 3: 63.38±3.66%; vehicle: 58.31±6.77%).Conclusion:Treatment with cystatin 3 improved collagen-induced arthritis by attenuating the disease score, nociception and paw edema. Moreover, the treatment did not induce body weight loss or spleen weight alteration. Artykuł poświęcony jest dziejom przecławskiej gałęzi rodziny Koniecpolskich h. Pobóg w XVI i XVII w. Jej protoplastą był kasztelan rozpierski Mikołaj Przedbór Koniecpolski (zm. 1586). Jednym z jego synów był Andrzej, kasztelan połaniecki. Dzięki małżeństwu z Anną, córką Stefana Ligęzy wszedł on w posiadanie miasta Przecławia. Jego synem był pułkownik Stefan Koniecpolski (zm. 1629), kolejny dziedzic na Przecławiu. W artykule przedstawiono jego działalność na scenie politycznej, dokonania w służbie wojskowej, jak również nieudane zabiegi o rękę Teofili Tarłówny. Skorygowano również kilka informacji dotyczących jego małżeństwa z Marcjanną Daniłowiczówną. Przedstawiono najbliższych krewnych obojga małżonków. Omówiono także stan posiadania Stefana i Marcjanny Koniecpolskich. Sporo uwagi poświęcono również trzem synom Stefana i Marcjanny, Andrzejowi, Aleksandrowi i Stanisławowi, którzy w 1647 r. podzielili duże, ale mocno zadłużone, dobra ziemskie po rodzicach. Dwaj starsi bracia zmarli w młodym wieku bezpotomnie. Najmłodszy syn Stefana i Marcjanny Koniecpolskich – Stanisław, który skupił w swoich rękach prawa do całego rodowego majątku, okazał się człowiekiem nieodpowiedzialnym i lekkomyślnym. Wyzbył się większości swoich dóbr, w tym rodowego Przecławia, a za bigamię został skazany na infamię. Dopiero w 1670 r. udało mu się zakończyć spór sądowy z rodziną jednej z byłych żon i odzyskać dobre imię. Stanisław Koniecpolski zmarł po 1670 r. Jego jedyny syn Leonard Józefat nie odegrał już żadnej roli w dziejach Rzeczypospolitej. Nie są znane nawet daty jego urodzin i śmierci. Zmarł on bezpotomnie jako ostatni męski reprezentant przecławskiej gałęzi rodziny Koniecpolskich.
