Abstract:
Aims To investigate potentially crucial aspects of Swedes' perceptions of nine different addictions. Data and Methods Population survey, sent out to 2,000 adult Swedes (18–74 years), focusing on the perceived severity of, responsibility for, options to recover from, and character of addiction to cigarettes, snuff, alcohol, cannabis, amphetamine, cocaine, heroin, medical drugs, and gambling. Results There are large differences in the ways in which various addiction problems are perceived. Whereas tobacco use, and to some extent gambling, are seen as relatively harmless “habits”, not particularly easy to get hooked on but easy to quit, the use of drugs such as heroin, amphetamine, and cocaine is seen as a major societal problem, and users are seen both as “sinners” who need to mend their ways and as powerless “victims”. In between comes the use and misuse of alcohol, cannabis and medical drugs, about which perceptions are more divided. Conclusions Respondents tend to downplay the risks and dangers with addictive habits that are common and familiar in mainstream culture, and to dramatise the risks and dangers with such habits that are uncommon or “strange”. This may have unfortunate consequences for addicts' options to find a path out of their predicaments.

Abstract:
Different educational programs aim to reduce or control Internet addiction. These are based on a traditional methodology that can be recognized as an exposition or master class (participatory or not). In this type of educational programs the student acquires a passive role since they are focused on informing the students of the dangers associated with the development of Internet addiction, but not on the treatment or changes in behavior. If we review these educational programs it can see how they have little effect on students. For this reason, a new educational program approach has been created that fights or limits Internet addiction through a methodological proposal that also focuses on increasing digital competence while limiting or controlling the evolution of Internet addiction. In this article, the design is presented.

Abstract:
Methadone is a long-acting synthetic opioid with high affinity for various opioid receptors, especially for μ-opioid receptors. Methadone has been used as a successful pharmacologic intervention for the treatment of heroin dependence and acute and chronic pain. This treatment is effective for opiate addiction, reducing morbidity and mortality associated with heroin use. However, overdosing with methadone has become a growing phenomenon because of the increased availability of this drug. Patients enrolled in a methadone maintenance treatment program may become physically dependent and may experience methadone withdrawal symptoms. In this review article, there are discussed about pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties of methadone, clinical symptoms of its overdose, dosage problems, detection of methadone in biological samples, treatment, and causes of methadone overdose-related deaths.

Abstract:
The rapid development of software applications and the increasing use of the Internet have raised many questions about the impact of this technology on the lives of adolescents, especially on “digital natives.” The advent of social networks (SNs) restructures their relationships in various ways, affecting both adolescents’ development and mental health. The present study aims to investigate uses and dangers of SNs according to a sample of 296 (166 female and 130 male) Italian middle and high schools adolescents (age range 13–18) and build a model of how SNs can turn out to be dangerous. To achieve this, twenty-four audio-recorded focus groups of Italian male and female adolescents were investigated by a Grounded Theory approach, abstracting from the transcripts the main uses and dangers of SNs and proposing a final model for the interpretation of the whole set of categories. The results highlighted two main dangers of SNs: (a) the desperate search for popularity, and (b) the exhibition of violent or offensive behavior facilitated by the sense of protection and anonymity derived from being hidden behind a virtual account. Finally, a psychological model of how SNs can turn out to be dangerous is presented. This study could be useful in developing prevention procedures against the risks of SNs (e.g., cyberbullying, internet addiction) without demonizing the use of social media as such.

Abstract:
This study aims to identify the use of social networking sites by Jordanian university students to spread health awareness about the dangers of drugs. This study followed the descriptive analytical approach, and a questionnaire was developed to match the study dimensions. The study population consisted of students from the University of Jordan, who were randomly selected (600 males and females). The study showed a significant effect of the University of Jordan students' use of social networking sites in spreading awareness about the danger of drugs. Also, there was a statistically significant difference at α = 0.05 for the Jordanian university students' use of social networking sites in spreading awareness about drug dangers. In addition, there were differences in the respondents' answers to the questionnaire due to the gender variable in favor of males. Furthermore, the results showed no differences according to the school year variable. In light of the current results, the study confirms the need to use social media to spread health awareness about the dangers of drugs, especially among students, because of the great damage to their health and society. Especially, university students are the educated group in society, and they have the role of educating others, not drug addiction

Abstract:
Internet addiction disorder (IAD) is a global topic that increasingly attracts the attention of the wider public. The purpose of this paper is to research the current situation in the prevalence of both Internet addiction and problematic Internet use, which is the most common precursor to developing psychological disorders related to the relationship to the Internet and its elements. The initial hypotheses of this paper are that the Internet addiction disorder is more widespread and harmful than can be deduced from the attitude of society and health authorities towards it and that it calls for renewed theoretical and empirical research, which is the attitude shared by the scientific community. The results that we stated in the paper clearly show numerous mental and physical deficiencies and problems that are experimentally proven and presented in the paper. As a recommendation, we would point to increasing awareness of the dangers of excessive and problematic use of the Internet, offering healthy alternatives, promoting the culture of safe use of the Internet, as well as educating individuals on other self-control mechanisms. Attention should be constantly paid to dangers that realistically exist, and it should be permanently worked on this aspect of mental health of individuals, nations, and the global society.

NAPZA stands for Narcotics, Psychotropics, and other Addictive Substances. The use of drugs is very dangerous for both mental and physical health of users. Drug users are at risk for impaired brain development, suicide and depression, memory loss, high risk for sexual behavior, addiction, impaired decision making, poor academic performance, violence, and motor vehicle accidents. Adolescent development is very vulnerable to the influence of the environment in everyday life. The transition period of adolescent development from children to adults is not only about age but also involves biological, cognitive, and socio-emotional changes. Changes in children's behavior, some in a positive direction and some in a negative direction. One of the negative behaviors is teenagers with habitual behavior of consuming alcohol. The many impacts experienced by drug abusers so that a treatment program is needed for those who have experienced drug abuse and anticipation for those who have not been entangled in using drugs, especially from the age of teenagers/students. This service is carried out on 12th grade high school students who are students of transition age to adolescence because in the next 3 years they will move into the teenage level. Through this service activity, it is expected to be able to provide understanding to SMAN 13 Takalar students about the dangers suffered by drug abuse, types and types of narcotics and how to overcome them. The method used provides a presentation of the correct understanding of drugs, discussions, questions and answers, the dangers and effective steps so that students can suppress negative behavior and abuse of drugs and harmful additives. In the activities carried out for approximately 4 hours, the children were very enthusiastic and became aware of the definition, forms, uses and dangers of drugs and committed not to use them in the future. Abstract Contemporary world brings people more and more dangers. Creation of the Internet made it even easier to harm other users without consequences. However we still can do something about it. We can learn how to protect ourselves in the network. That is why it is so important to disseminate the main goals of safety management while using Internet. The paper presents main dangers awaiting for network users – both the youngest and the older ones, such as cyberbullying or phishing. The authors also point to the more frequent Internet addiction. The main goal of this paper is to indicate on how the on-line safety management should look like and how people can protect themselves from the dangers, of which they are sometimes even not aware. Children and adults shall be educated about the dangers in the Internet, and how to avoid them. Only then will they know, how to properly manage their on-line safety.

Abstract:
We highlight and study in this paper the phenomenon of the spread of addiction to electronic games, where the addict goes through stages before reaching the degree of addiction. In order to model this phenomenon, we have divided people into four groups, which are potential gamers, engaged gamers, addicted gamers, and gamers who have recovered from addiction. We propose a discrete mathematical model with control strategies using three controls that represent, respectively, u k , which represents awareness of the dangers of electronic games through written and visual media; v k , which represents the effort to direct children and adolescents to educational and entertaining alternative means; and w k , which represents creating rehabilitation centers for addicts to quit electronic game addiction. To characterize optimal controls, we use Pontryagin’s maximum principle and the system of optimality solved by an iterative method. Finally, numerical simulations are presented with and without controls. Using a cost-effectiveness analysis, we will show that the control that represents the creation of rehabilitation centers for gaming addicts is the most cost-effective strategy to control the spread of gaming addiction.

Abstract:
Purpose In the limited existing research on smartphone addiction, reinforcement reward and automatic habit have been identified as two distinct underlying mechanisms. The purpose of this paper is to better understand the interaction between these two mechanisms, as well as role of smartphone features in activating different formation mechanisms. Design/methodology/approach An online survey with 379 samples was conducted to empirically validate the model. The data were analyzed by structural equation modeling approach. Findings The automatic habit strengthens the driving effects of reinforcement rewards (i.e. perceived enjoyment and mood regulation) on smartphone addiction. Smartphone features activate distinct underlying mechanisms. Value-added function facilitates the perception of reinforcement rewards, while convenience promotes the habit formation. Originality/value This study is one of the first ones that assess the interplay between the two formation mechanisms in the extant literature on smartphone addiction. This study also reveals the dangers of smartphone features which have always been regarded as advantages. The findings contribute to the current understandings of smartphone addiction.

Abstract:
Background Facebook addiction (FA) has been suggested as a potential behavioral addiction. There is a severe lack of research evidence regarding the Facebook addiction behavior among university students during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The aim of this study was to determine factors associated with Facebook addiction among Bangladeshi university students. Methods A cross-sectional online survey was conducted among 2,161 Bangladeshi university students during the COVID-19 pandemic from June 2021 to September 2021. A well fitted regression model in R programming language was used for this study. Results Female respondents and those whose family monthly income was <25,000 BDT were more addicted to Facebook than other respondents. Respondents who lost a family member or a relative to COVID-19, engaged in physical activities (exercise) during the pandemic, used Facebook for work purposes or used Facebook to relieve daily stress were more addicted to Facebook. Conclusion Overuse of social media is problematic as it can trigger several mental health symptoms, especially among students. Adequate and effective interventions are required to educate students about the dangers of Facebook addiction and to provide an alternative, healthy options.

Abstract:
Social media has become a virtual social and entertainment environment for many individuals. In today's society, although social media provide a useful way to connect with peers, it can expose users to addiction to these means, affecting their mental health. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the relationship between social media addiction and symptoms of depression and generalized anxiety in deaf and hard-of-hearing students (DHH). Data was collected from 165 students in integration schools in southern Saudi Arabia. The mean age of the sample ranged from M = 18.6 years, SD = 1.81 years. The Centre for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (Andresen et al., 1994) was used. Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (Spitzer et al., 2006). The results revealed that more than 50% of DHH students have a moderate level of addiction to social media. More than 25% have a severe level of addiction. In addition, as expected, the results showed a statistically significant positive relationship between social media addiction and both symptoms of depression and generalized anxiety. Linear regression analysis showed that generalized depression and anxiety significantly predicted social media addiction. The study recommended the importance of spreading psychological awareness of the dangers of social media addiction, and the damage it carries to the mental health of individuals. Holding awareness courses and lectures for DHH students and people with disabilities in general on the negative effects of social media addiction on mental health.

Abstract:
Social media addiction (SMA) is one of the most widespread non-medical addictions. Previous research has found positive associations between SMA and depression, anxiety, stress, and other symptoms and signs of mental ill-being. The purpose of this study is to identify and compare the associations with specific manifestations of psychological distress (e.g., impulsivity, narcissism, vulnerability to manipulation, low assertiveness, smartphone addiction and its factors) in groups of Belarusian and Ukrainian university students. The study was conducted using the following diagnostic tools: SMA-15 Questionnaire by V.P. Sheinov A.S. Dziavitsyn; a short version of the SAS-16 questionnaire Smartphone Addiction Scale by V.P. Sheinov; Assessment of the Degree of Vulnerability of an Individual from Manipulative Influences by V.P. Sheinov; Questionnaire for Diagnosing the Potential of Communicative Impulsivity by V.A. Losenkov; and Narcissistic Questionnaire by E. Kot. The sample consisted of 604 university students, including 403 residents of Belarus (77% females) and 201 residents of Ukraine (53% females). The mean age of the participants was 21.5 years (SD = 5.17). The results of the study revealed: (1) positive associations of SMA with impulsivity, smartphone addiction and its factors (‘loss of control,’ ‘fear of rejection’ and user’s ‘euphoria’), common for the Belarusian and Ukrainian students; (2) positive associations of SMA with narcissism for the Belarusian male and female students as well as for the Ukrainian male students; and (3) a negative association of SMA with assertiveness for the Ukrainian male and female students and for the Belarusian female students (for the latter, a negative association with vulnerability to manipulation was also found). In practical terms, the revealed associations between SMA and a number of symptoms and signs of psychological distress provide material for explanatory work with students about the dangers of excessive involvement in social media.

Abstract:
Social media has often started to be used as the first source for accessing information. Country agenda, general issues, research, new ideas, entertainment, shopping, instant communication and cooperation are the positive contributions of social media. Excessive use of social media in every aspect of life certainly causes harm. It causes serious psychological deformation, especially on adolescents, whom we call the young group. While social media can increase technical skills in adolescents, it can reduce social skills and communication and even some of the negative effects they encounter in this area can create psychological trauma. While the feeling of inadequacy, comparison and competition lead to psychological problems such as self-confidence and social anxiety; the virtualized perception of beauty poses dangers such as eating disorders in young people. Social media use, which has reached the point of addiction, adds a number of negativities to young people’s lives, such as sleep deprivation, decreased time spent with family and loss of interest in real life. In light of all this, the aim of this research is to examining the social media addiction levels of young adults. The sample of the study consists of 201 university students studying in different departments of a state university in Turkey and whose age range is between 18-30 and more age. “Social media addiction scale - adult form” scale developed by Sahin and Yagcı (2017) was used as a data collection tool in the study, with permission from the developer authors. In the study, the relational screening method, one of the quantitative research methods, was used. As a result, a significant relationship was detected between the variables of young people’s gender, age, daily internet and social media usage and their social media addictions. In addition the average social media addiction scores of university students were found to be high.

Abstract:
According to several recent studies, many children are included in the category of addiction to using cellphones, especially the use of social media. Increasingly with the degree of addiction the lightest or the most severe. Community service activities carried out by the service team reported in this study will specifically focus on socializing the dangers of using social media. Social media was chosen because the risks and dangers are greater for children because of the nature of online communities that do not interact directly and anonymously. The method used in this community service activity is active participation, which in this activity uses 4 methods, namely implementation, problem solving and games. The results of community service activities show that students of SD Negeri 09 Wanarejan Utara play social media between six to eight hours every day, far exceeding what is recommended by WHO and the lack of parental assistance in supervising children in using social media. This activity suggests several things for students, namely encouraging students' openness to what social media they use, being careful of personal data when on social media and encouraging students to become creators by creating creative content rather than being passive media consumers.

Abstract:
The expansion of the use of electronic games has led to a surge in the rates of gaming addiction among adolescents. Electronic games addiction (EGA) presents, of course, psychological, hygienic, social, educational, and moral dangers. Therefore, it is very important to educate adolescents and enhance their awareness of the dangers of electronic games addiction (DEGA). Given the unique characteristics of augmented reality technology, the present study aims to develop a sustainable environment based on augmented reality (SEBAR) within educational institutions to educate adolescents about the DEGA. The SEBAR in the present study is based on the possibility of using the applications of augmented reality (AR) technology to generate digital objects of some images and barcodes projected on the school walls, classroom doors, school yards, and computer labs, in addition to specially developed missions to educate adolescents on the DEGA. In the present study, the embedded design as one of the mixed research methods was used to examine the effect of AR on adolescents’ awareness of the DEGA. Research treatments were applied to seventy-five high school students in two different schools in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The experimental processing was carried out in a school where it was possible to develop a sustainable environment while the other schools were assigned to the control group. For comparing the experimental group that used the SEBAR and the control group that used the normal environment based on a set of articles and tasks without any link to AR, the quasi-experimental approach was used. In addition, to gain a deep understanding of the effects of AR on the awareness of the DEGA, the phenomenological approach was used. Furthermore, an electronic gaming addiction scale (EGAS) and an awareness test for the DEGA were developed as study instruments. The findings showed an increase in the adolescents’ knowledge and awareness regarding the DEGA in the experimental group that used the SEBAR in comparison with the awareness of their peers in the control group.

Abstract:
Introduction. Nowadays, digital transformation of society is inevitably accompanied by a set of problems and challenges. Under universal transition to an online format, it is important to analyse how parents assess internet risks for their children and themselves. The aim of the present research is to reveal parents’ perceptions of main trends and structural features of children internet addiction.Methodology and research methods. The research is based on the results of a mass survey. The survey was conducted in 2019 according to a multi-stage sample (by gender, age, type of settlement) consisted of the adult population of the Tyumen region. The authors carried out a detailed socio-statistical analysis of internet risks for children based on the self-assessments of all respondents (with the identification of socio-demographic groups), risk assessments for children, according to parents. The structure of “Parents” sub-sample on gender and settlement type is proportional to the structure of the main sample. Under the heading “Children”, the authors mean minor children of respondents. The risk of internet addiction is included in the structure of 12 internet risks and examined on the basis of 4 components (behavioural, cognitive, social and affective). In the course of analysis, Alpha Cronbach consistency ratings, index method, Spearman’s rank correlation coefficients, Pearson’s Goodness-of-Fit Test, F-Test for equality of several means, case classification and triangulation method were applied.Results. The internet transformation of society can be considered an accomplished fact, since the vast majority of people of all ages spend hours online daily. Every fourth respondent notes that their children use the internet from three to four hours a day. The ambivalence of parental attitudes toward internet addiction is manifested in high estimates of its risk for children and young people “in general”, and in significantly lower estimates for own children, regardless of the amount of time children spend on the internet, whether they have friends outside the network. Parents clearly articulate negative connotations “in general”, but at the same time give very low estimates of dangers in behavioural variables.Scientific novelty. New empirical data, classified on the basis of internet behaviour of children and their parents, as well as parental attitude to this behaviour, have been introduced into the research discourse. An important social issue is identified: in spite of parents’ declarations about the risks of dysfunctional (to the detriment of personal interaction, outdoor games and other kinds of activities) internet use by children, the consensus on the features and dangers of internet addiction in society has not been reached yet.Practical significance. The weak articulation and ambivalence of internet addiction problem perception in Russian society is being proved. Insufficient parental awareness of potential internet addiction dangers for children is demonstrated.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the study of factors contributing to the formation of adherence to smoking in young people. The study involved 300 young people, of which 154 people are students of the Saratov College of Water Transport, Construction and Service, 146 people are students of a medical university. The study of smoking prevalence was carried out using adapted questionnaires that include questions about adherence to tobacco smoking, as well as modern alternative means of smoking (electronic cigarettes), awareness of the dangers of smoking tobacco products and electronic cigarettes. Were studied the socio-economic and psychological factors that contribute to the formation of addiction. The results of the study indicate a high prevalence of smoking among young people surveyed, while more than half of all respondents who smoke prefer alternative means of smoking. It should be noted that there is a higher prevalence of alternative means of smoking among girls compared to boys. It was found that smoking electronic cigarettes prevails among people with a higher level of material well-being. The results of studying the awareness of respondents about the dangers of tobacco smoking showed a high level of awareness of the respondents. At the same time, awareness of the dangers of alternative means of smoking is at a lower level. An analysis of the study of the reasons for starting smoking among study participants showed that persons living separately from their parents are more susceptible to smoking. According to the respondents themselves, an important role in the formation of adherence to an addiction is played by a negative example of the social environment (smoking of parents, friends, acquaintances). The correlation analysis revealed the relationship between smoking and the level of psychoemotional stress. Thus, the result of this study indicates that the high prevalence of smoking among young people is due to the impact of socioeconomic and psychological factors that must be taken into account in the fight against the formation of addiction among the younger generation. Abstract:
Background: Waterpipe tobacco smoking is becoming increasingly popular in the West among young people. Given the associated health risks of this behaviour, we aimed to investigate why young adults take up waterpipe tobacco smoking and their attitudes to the associated risks. Methods: This was a qualitative study, with a phenomenological perspective. Focus groups and face-to-face semi-structured interviews were conducted among waterpipe smokers aged 20–30 years living in London, UK. Transcripts were analysed using constant comparison and cycling between the data and analysis. Data collection continued until thematic saturation was achieved. Results: Sixteen smokers attended focus groups and face-to-face interviews. Seven main themes emerged encompassing four main dimensions relating to: lack of knowledge, perceived risk, affordability, and social addiction. Waterpipe was perceived to be safer than cigarette smoking due to the pleasant odour, fruity flavours, and belief that water filtered the toxins. The waterpipe had become a “social addiction” enhancing group atmosphere, was cheap and did not have the dangers of violence or hallucinations associated with other addictions like alcohol and drugs. Because of their intermittent smoking patterns and the lack of statutory warnings, none felt they were not at risk of any adverse side effects. Conclusions: Waterpipe smoking is a growing public health problem; the social environment associated with its use is perceived to be a positive outlet by smokers who do not consider it harmful to their health. These perceptions need to be addressed urgently by anti-smoking policies.

Abstract:
Background: An estimated 19.5 million people aged 12 or older in the United States have had a substance use disorder related to illicit drugs or alcohol in 2020 (Hoenig, 2020). Drug addiction is a chronic and relapsing brain disorder characterized by compulsive drug-seeking and drug-taking behaviors. The primary causes of which include interrelated brain networks that comprise the reward and anti-reward system, as well as the central immune system. While its validity as a disease is controversial, many attribute its existence to moral failing and personal choice. As such, it remains a complex phenomenon that alters the brain function and leads to a plethora of psychological and neurological changes, temporary and permanent. Interestingly, there are several factors that contribute to an individual’s vulnerability to drug addiction, the most surprising of which is genetic predispositions, environmental factors, early drug introductions and everything in between. Drug abuse remains a critical global issue that has severe implications for public health and societal well-being. Aims: By shedding light on their addictive properties and the resulting physiological and psychological consequences this article aims to raise awareness about the dangers associated with these substances. Furthermore, this article investigates the significant risks that come hand in hand with drug abuse. In addition to examining the causes and risks of drug abuse, it delves into preventive measures as well as treatment approaches. Evidence based strategies such as education programs, early intervention initiatives, harm reduction practices and policy measures are essential in reducing both the prevalence and harmful effects of drug abuse. Moreover, exploring various treatment modalities ranging from pharmacological interventions to behavioral therapies - It emphasizes the importance of personalized, comprehensive and multidisciplinary approaches when it comes to tackling drug addiction. .....

Abstract:
Virtual reality (VR) refers to the computer-generated simulation of a three-dimensional image environment that can be interacted within a seemingly physical way by a person using special electronic equipment and making people interactive and immersive. VR technology is applied to communication activities, producing VR communication. VR technology is applied to news reports, giving birth to the emergence of VR news. The great significance of VR technology for news communication lies in the comprehensive intake and recording and transmission of news site materials so that news events can “reproduce” and “restore.” The most prominent feature of VR transmission is immersion. Immersivity is mainly reflected in the perceptual system and the behavioral system of the human body. The immersion of perception system includes visual immersion, auditory immersion, touch immersion, and other sensory immersion; behavioral system immersion includes the immersion of language system, direction system immersion, and expression system immersion. Immersive communication has experienced three development stages: interactive communication, invasive communication, infiltration, and audience experience. There are three hidden dangers in VR technology in the communication. One is the hidden danger of the technical operation level: the lack of security and stability of the production process may lead to the disappearance of the traditional reporter, the second is the ethical hidden danger: the degradation of “audience” to “mass,” and third is “body” weakening the authority of “addiction”: the emergence of “brain in the cylinder,” the emergence of snooping feast, and the formation of exposed carnival. There are three aspects to prevent VR hidden dangers, layout and top-level design, improve security, and communication efficiency, promote industrial application, enhance user stickiness, strengthen brand building, and create ace IP and quality content.

Abstract:
Smartphone addiction is associated with depression, anxiety, stress, dissatisfaction with life, health problems and a number of other negative properties. The article found that the dependence of girls and boys on a smartphone is positively associated with exposure to cyberbullying, victimization and dependence on social networks and negatively – with exposure to manipulation. The positive relationship between smartphone addiction and victimization is realized through positive correlations between most of the factors that form these complex constructs. The feedback between smartphone addiction and exposure to manipulation is carried out through negative correlations between the factors that form them, and its difference from the positive relationship with exposure to cyberbullying shows that these two exposures to adverse influences are fundamentally different. The difference is explained by the fact that cyberbullying is an open manifestation of an unfriendly attitude towards the addressee of the impact, and manipulation is a covert control of him, often masked by ostentatious friendliness. The results obtained can be used in practical work with pupils and students in the process of explaining to them the dangers of excessive smartphone use.

Abstract:
Abstract Introduction Despite widespread knowledge of the dangers of cigarette consumption, smoking continues to be a public health concern. One compound that has shown potential for treatment in preclinical models is the neuropeptide oxytocin (OT). The purpose of the present study was to examine the effects of intranasal oxytocin on cigarette craving, behavioral economic demand for cigarettes, and cigarette consumption, in regular smokers after 18 hours of abstinence. Method Otherwise healthy daily smokers (n = 35) completed two sessions where they received OT (40 IU intranasal) or placebo (PBO) and completed measures of craving and cigarette demand, and they were given six opportunities to smoke partial cigarettes in exchange for money. Results On average participants smoked few cigarettes after receiving OT than after receiving PBO, and they reported less desire for additional cigarettes during the smoking period. OT did not affect cigarette demand or standardized measures of cigarette craving. Conclusions This study suggests that OT decreases some indices of smoking desire and consumption, providing modest support for the idea that OT might be effective for reducing cigarette smoking. Implications This study provides new evidence that oxytocin might have clinical value in the treatment of addictive disorders, in this case tobacco addiction. The study adds to a growing literature suggesting that this neuropeptide, which is mainly known for its role in social bonding and attachment, may also affect mood and motivational states relevant to addiction.
