Wexler, Sharon A. "Dangerous connections : maternal ambivalence in psychotherapy between women." Thesis, McGill University, 2005. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=102233.

Full text
Abstract:
This two-year qualitative clinical study investigates the intea-psychic (within a person) and inter-relational (between people) effect of maternal ambivalence in female psychotherapy relationships. The participants are five, low-income single mothers, and I am the therapist researcher. Ambivalence describes the co-existence of loving and hating feelings. In traditional psychoanalytic theory, ambivalence originates in the developing infant's relationship to the mother and forms the basis of all adult relationships. A mother's experience of ambivalence is viewed as a regressive return to an earlier emotional experience with her mother. Maternal ambivalence is a feminist psychoanalytic concept developed by Parker (1995, 1997). Parker expands the Freudian and post-Freudian object relations concept of ambivalence using the perspective of the adult mother. In Parker's conceptualization of maternal ambivalence, a mother experiences feelings of ambivalence towards her infant and child that are not simply regressive, but are part of her normal adult development as a mother. Each mother's experiences and expressions of maternal ambivalence are affected by her social and cultural context of mothering. Each woman is consciously and unconsciously affected by her psychosocial constructions of maternal ambivalence and brings her beliefs and experiences into the clinical relationship. Through highlighting the narratives and interpreting the transference and counter-transference material, this study shows the impact of maternal ambivalence on the therapeutic alliance of women working with women in clinical social work. The therapeutic alliance refers to the quality of the relational bond between the therapist and client. This population of mothers was selected because they represent a significant group of clients seen in various clinical social work Dangerous Connections settings, such as youth protection, non-profit counseling agencies, and community centers. In this manuscript-based thesis, I present two of my participants' cases as an indepth exploration of my research process, its analysis, and the applicable theories I used. This research process indicates that in seeking to develop a more culturally and gender sensitive clinical practice and therapeutic connections, social workers may benefit from reflectively challenging their internalized psychosocial idealizations and denigrations of motherhood.

Greybar, Milliken Shannon J. "The dangerous reality| Sexual risk taking among college women." Thesis, DePaul University, 2014. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3586284.

Full text
Abstract:

Research has shown a link between sexual risk taking among college women and a decrease in self-esteem. The primary purpose of this study is to explore the sexual risktaking practices occurring within the academic achieving, more affluent, Caucasian and female college student population. The secondary purpose of this study is to explore what sexual risk-taking patterns exist within behavioral and sociocultural constructed variables and demographic information among college women. The variables examined are religion, self-esteem and reported depressive symptoms. Additional variables used during analysis are body weight and race and/or ethnicity of college women. There are three primary research questions being examined in this study: (a) Do college women with higher academic achievement report more sexual risk-taking practices than those with lower academic achievement? (b) Do women of a higher socioeconomic status choose birth control over disease prevention in their sexual encounters? (c) Do behavioral and sociocultural variables make a difference in risky sexual behavior of college women? The American College Health Association (ACHA) National College Health Assessment II (NCHA-II) has been used to measure the college student health habits and practices at over 540 college and universities in the United States and Canada. The instrument was administered online in spring 2010 and received 872 responses, of which 542 were from female students. The data is analyzed through multiple logistic regressions. Findings of statistical significance were found between academic achievement and sexual risk taking, the number of partners a college woman has and sexual risk taking, and increase in human papillomavirus (HPV). This study also affirmed prior research that there was a significant difference in the sexual risk taking between college women who had been diagnosed with depression in the last year. The study demonstrates the connection between depressive symptoms and sexual risk taking. The research does not present a judgment about sex—but rather, evidence regarding the lack of disease prevention, the long-term implications, and possible causes of increases in casual sex on college campuses.

Farrell, Rita. "Dangerous women: Constructions of female criminality in Western Australia 1915-1945." Thesis, Farrell, Rita (1997) Dangerous women: Constructions of female criminality in Western Australia 1915-1945. PhD thesis, Murdoch University, 1997. https://researchrepository.murdoch.edu.au/id/eprint/51361/.

Full text
Abstract:
In the last three decades the subject of female criminality has received a great deal of attention. Many studies have criticised existing models of male-oriented criminology and have attempted to formulate femaleoriented models. Others have analysed patterns of female offending in an attempt to explain the motivations for particular types of offences. This thesis does not offer explanations for offences; nor does it address patterns of offending. Rather, it examines the rates of prosecution and conviction on a broad range of offences to assess the treatment that women received once they entered the criminal justice system as offenders. Despite the attention devoted to female criminality in the last thirty years recent studies indicate that the differential treatment of female offenders remains unexplained. Three distinct arguments have been put forward to account for the way in which female offenders are dealt with by the courts: the chivalry or paternalist thesis argues that women are treated more leniently than men; the 'evil woman' hypothesis contends that women are dealt with more harshly; and the 'equal treatment' theory is based on the contention that the criminal justice system does not discriminate between the sexes. This thesis argues that these hypotheses are merely variations of an argument which assumes that gender is the only explanatory framework within which the treatment of female offenders can be understood. It argues that the treatment women received in the criminal justice system throughout the period under review was dependent on a number of factors: the degree to which these women conformed to prevailing gender expectations; the nature of the offences with which they were charged; the differing philosophies of the Police Act and Criminal Code which defined those offences; and, significantly, the culture of the courts within which the offences were heard. In analysing a broad range of offences over a thirty year period, the treatment of women as offenders is placed firmly within a social context. Far from assuming that the law operates as a neutral discourse, this thesis argues that the criminal justice system was one of the mechanisms by which the social order was managed and that the criminal laws were interpreted within the broader frameworks of the need to maintain social stability and the prevailing understandings about the nature of femininity.

Barton, Alana Roberta. "Fragile moralities and dangerous sexualities : a case study of 'deviant' women and semi-penal institutionalisation on Merseyside, 1823-1994." Thesis, Liverpool John Moores University, 2001. http://researchonline.ljmu.ac.uk/5524/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is primarily concerned with the social control and disciplining of women within a semi-penal institution. As a case study it critically analyses the history of one particular institution from 1823 to 1994, chronicling its development from a nineteenth century female reformatory to a twentieth century bail and probation hostel for women. Through an analysis of this history, the thesis fulfils three aims. First, it explicitly identifies the themes of continuity and discontinuity in the history of semi-penal institutionalisation, and thus contributes significantly to the feminist theoretical literature by establishing this oft forgotten arena as a significant site of social control for 'deviant' women, placed somewhere between the formal control of the prison and the informal regulation of the domestic sphere. Second, it deconstructs the dominant, hegemonic discourses around domesticity, respectability, motherhood, sexuality and pathology that have been mobilised to both define 'deviance' in women and to construct semi-penal institutional regimes aimed at reforming deviant behaviour. This analysis also makes an important contribution to this field of study in that it confirms that the discourses utilised to characterise and discipline women in reformatories during the nineteenth century, continue to be mobilised for the same purpose in a probation hostel nearly two hundred years later. In recognising this fact, the thesis dismantles the popular notion that such institutions are unproblematic simply because they are 'not custodial'. Finally, the thesis analyses the way in which women cope with or resist the disciplinary regimes and discourses imposed upon them. It concludes that women utilise a range of strategies through which they can re-gain and re-assert a sense of agency and authority within a regime that, whilst claiming to 'empower', actually serves to induce submission in women and to `infantilise' them, reducing them to a less-than-adult status. Through an examination of these strategies of resistance and coping it becomes apparent that the distribution of power in the semi-penal institution is not fixed, but can be subtly negotiated and redistributed. This thesis therefore complements and adds to the existing body of literature around women's resistance to custodial regimes by highlighting that these methods of survival are not only to be found in prisons but in semi-penal institutions also.

Kim, Subin. "How Dangerous Can A Lady Be?: Challenges of Female Recidivism and a Case for Gender-Responsive Policies." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2013. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/cmc_theses/633.

Full text
Abstract:
It is no secret that over the last several decades, prison populations have grown exponentially due to an increasingly “tough on crime” policy stance and war on drugs. Although male offending populations continue to make up the majority of prison inmates nationwide, the fastest growing prison population has actually been female offenders, many who are locked up for nonviolent offenses like drug possession and larceny. Until recently, female offenders have been treated as an afterthought to male-dominated prison statistics. However, further research shows that female offending patterns are starkly different from their male counterparts, and women are contributing to higher recidivism rates because of their unmet needs prior to, during, and after incarceration. Therefore, this paper argues that state and federal governments must institute gender-responsive policies in order to combat stubbornly high recidivism rates through reentry alternatives, especially halfway houses.

McLaren, Mary Gugu Tizita. "Dancing with dangerous desires : the performance of femininity and experiences of pleasure and danger by young black women within club spaces." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/14628.

Full text
Abstract:
Includes bibliographical references (150-157).
This research was carried out in Langa Township, Cape Town and worked with 7 young black women, between the ages of 19 and 26 years old. The aim was to explore the fluidity of identity, in particular gender identity, by exploring the performance of 'normative' femininity and 'hidden/subversive' femininity performed in different spaces. The focus was on 'hidden/subversive' femininity and the experiences of pleasure and danger in clubs spaces in Cape Town. It was found that these experiences centre on appearance, use of alcohol and dancing and expose the way in which young women negotiate between the pleasurable and dangerous that, consciously or unconsciously, push the boundaries of entrenched gender norms. In addition, owing 10 the nature of the research, constructions of masculinity were also explored and discovered to have a profound impact on young women's experiences within club spaces and in their everyday lives, relating to sexual relationships. This study aims to reveal the power and agency of young women, as well as the struggles and restrictions.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Background: Toxoplasmosis is a condition in which a person is infected with Toxoplasma gondii. Humanitarian transmission is closely linked to the environment in which they live and the conduct that allows the entry into the body of Oocyst Toxoplasma gondii. Toxoplasmosis in married women is very dangerous because it can cause conditions of infertility, repeated spontaneous abortion, stillbirth, and congenital abnormalities. This study aimed to analyze the association between environmental and behavior on toxoplasmosis incidences among married women. Subjects and Method: This was a case-control study carried out at the Alternative Medical Clinic, Aquatreat Therapy Indonesia Foundation in Bogor City during 2019. Total of 160 women were enrolled in this study and divided into 2 groups: 80 in case group and 80 in control group. The dependent variable was toxoplasmosis behavior. The independent variables were environmental and behavior factors. Data were collected from clinical laboratory results and questionnaire and analyzed using a multiple logistic regression. Results: In environmental factors, presence of pets at home (OR= 3.73; 95%CI= 1.83 to 7.61; p<0.001), presence of wild cats or neighboring cats that are often seen around the house (OR= 2.63; 95%CI= 1.24 to 5.58; p= 0.012), and risky environment (OR= 9.60; 95%CI= 3.74 to 24.61; p<0.001) were significantly associated with toxoplasmosis among married women. In behavior factors, consumption of raw vegetables/vegetables (OR= 4.53; 95%CI= 1.23 to 16.73; p= 0.023), consumption of smoked meat/ steak/ undercooked (OR= 3.32; 95%CI= 0.12 to 0.77; p<0.001), food buying habits at roadside stalls (OR= 8.64; 95%CI= 0.03 to 0.50; p<0.001), and washing hands before eating (OR= 0.29; 95%CI= 1.80 to 25.50; p= 0.006) were significantly associated with toxoplasmosis among married women. Conclusion: Environmental and behavior factors are positively associate with toxoplasmosis among married women. Abstract:
Psychological well-being is seen as a protective factor when facing adverse life events. The COVID-19 pandemic is one of the most dangerous challenges that has put humanity to the test. In this context, present study aimed to investigate in a comparative plan the effect of COVID-19 pandemic on the Greek and Bulgarian older adults' perceptions of psychological well-being and distress. A total of 180 older adults, 90 Greeks (45 men) and 90 Bulgarians (45 men), aged 60-89 years, were studied by means of the Heubeck and Neill’s inventory questionnaire (Heubeck & Neill, 2000). The results revealed insignificantly higher levels of psychological well-being and distress among the Bulgarian sample in comparison to the Greek sample, with the differences between Greek and Bulgarian women regarding psychological well-being being more pronounced and statistically significant.

Abstract:
With the development of mobile technology and the progress of an Untact society, the number of people who listen to lectures or music in various urban environments is increasing. In response to such an increase in demand, Active Noise Canceling(ANC) earphones that remove ambient background noise or static and also enable stable listening have been developed, and the earphones are enjoying great popularity. However, these ANC earphones can put the user in a dangerous situation at any time because they block even major alarm sounds such as a car horn or fire alarm. In this study, 10 men and women in their 20s, who frequently use ANC earphones, were asked to listen to music by wearing ANC earphones without prior notification of the fact that a fire alarm sound was transmitted. After that, the fire alarm bell or emergency broadcast sound was randomly generated for them to recognise the fire situation, and the time it took to start evacuation was measured. And in all these processes, EEG was simultaneously measured to analyse changes in emotions such as arousal responses felt by the experimental participants As a result of the experiment, it was found that the case of transmitting an emergency broadcast made the participants start evacuation approximately 23 seconds faster than the case of sounding the fire alarm bell. However, as a result of correlation analysis with EEG values indicating arousal responses such as tension, irritability, and nervousness, the significance probability(p-value) was 0.825, indicating that there is no statistically significant correlation. Therefore, it was found that the participants’ awareness of the fire alarm sound decreased when wearing ANC earphones regardless of the types of the fire alarm whether it was an alarm bell or an emergency broadcast.

Abstract:
"Divorce is considered a form of family disintegration that leads to the demolition of the family and family pillars after its construction through the marriage contract and then the termination of all social ties between husband and wife and often between their relatives. Divorce rates have risen to frightening levels that threaten our Islamic societies. Among the most important causes of divorce in our society are the following: The failure of one or both spouses in the process of adapting to the other through the different nature of the spouses and their personalities, the interference of the parents, the lack of harmony and compatibility between the spouses, the bad relationship and the large number of marital problems, the cultural openness, the absence of dialogue within the family. Several parties have sought to develop possible solutions to this dangerous phenomenon in our society, including: Establishment of advisory offices to reduce divorce by social and psychological specialists, and include the issue of divorce within the educational and educational curricula in a more concerned manner that shows the extent of the seriousness of divorce and its negative effects on the individual, family and society, and the development of an integrated policy that ensures the treatment of the causes and motives leading to divorce in the community, as well as holding conferences. Scientific and enlightening seminars and awareness workshops and the need for religious institutions and their media platforms to play a guiding and awareness role of the danger and effects of divorce on family construction and society, and to educate community members about the dangers of divorce and the importance of maintaining the husband’s bond and stability. As well as reviewing some marriage legislation and regulations, such as raising the age of marriage and reconsidering the issue of underage marriage, which is witnessing a rise in divorce rates. Among the proposed solutions is the demand to withdraw the power of divorce from the man's hands and place it in the hands of the judge, to prevent certain harm to women, or as a means to prevent the frequent occurrence of divorce. The last proposition created a problem that contradicts the stereotypical image of divorce in Islamic law, for which conditions and elements have been set, especially since Islamic Sharia is the main source of personal status laws in most Islamic countries. Therefore, the importance of this research is reflected in the study of this solution and its effectiveness as a means to prevent the spread of divorce, and not deviate from the pattern specified for it according to Sharia."

Abstract:
Terrorism today is one of the main threats to human civilization. In recent years, international terror has proved its extreme cruelty, its readiness to stop at nothing in order to achieve its goals. As a result of committing terrorist acts, innocent people, children, women and old people suffer. For a terrorist, human life has no value. With the modern variety of potentially dangerous objects and their functional orientation, it is impossible to ensure safety with standard solutions, using uniform strategies, tactical schemes and techniques, and the same type of equipment. If we simply follow the path of ensuring the maximum level of safety, it may turn out that at most facilities the cost of the applied technological means will be many times greater than the cost of the technological equipment of the facility and even the facility itself. Hence, it follows that in order to create effective physical protection systems or to effectively modernize existing physical protection systems, it is necessary to analyze these systems, to identify the weakest and most protected places that need strengthening. At the same time, an important difference must be taken into account between physical protection systems and other safety systems used to protect against natural disasters (such as earthquakes, floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, etc.) and against abnormal operating conditions (such as fire, malfunctions in electrical equipment, etc.). Unlike human violators, security breaches are subject to strict laws and do not happen without reason. For example, the fire of a fire can only burn while there is fuel and oxygen. If one of these elements is removed, the fire will go out. Also, a fire cannot decide where and when it will occur, and how it will progress. Conversely, the human adversary (intruder) has the ability to decide whether to attack, when and how to attack, can adjust to the measures of the physical protection system to counter it, and possibly even outwit and defeat them. All this introduces a significant element of uncertainty into the process of analyzing and evaluating the effectiveness of the physical protection system. Taking into account the above, the task of developing a methodological approach to risk assessment when committing a terrorist attack using physical protection systems, taking into account the optimization of calculations of cost-intensive algorithms in real time, becomes more and more urgent. In this article, the authors attempt to create this approach.

"Stigmatizing Attitudes Toward Depression,Anxiety and Schizophrenia Among Jordanian university students." In International Conference on Public Health and Humanitarian Action. International Federation of Medical Students' Associations - Jordan, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.56950/jzab2514.

Abstract:
Background: One of the most prevalent mental health conditions, depression affects more than 300 million people worldwide and significantly contributes to disability. Anxiety is characterized by disruptive feelings of dread, concern, and uncertainty. Schizophrenia is a serious, lifelong mental illness that impacts 1% of people worldwide. The illness can cause serious impairments and is characterized by positive, negative, and cognitive symptoms. Rejection and intolerance toward psychiatric patients are part of the stigma associated with mental illness, which reduces their prospects of leading more fulfilling lives. We conducted this study to come up with valuable evidence concerning the awareness of depression and anxiety as mental disorders among university students in Jordan. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the stigmatizing views of college and university students toward those who suffer from anxiety, depression and schizophrenia, the desire for social isolation, gender (male and female), and major (medical and non-medical) disparities. Method: This cross-sectional study collected data from all Jordanian universities via Google forms. The survey contains three validated questionnaires concerning anxiety, depression and Schizophrenia associated with Stigmatization separately. Results: 730 people completed the survey, which consisted of three questionnaires, one for anxiety, with 203 responses, of which (66.5 %) were female. While the depression one contained 307 responses, and 72.4% of them were women. And the last one, 223 responds had been collected via the survey in which female consists of 59.4%. Our research showed that people who were medical students or who had already experienced anxiety were more inclined to disagree with the words "Sign of Weakness," "Not a Real Problem," and "People with Anxiety Are Dangerous. “ Additionally, people who had previously experienced depression are more likely to concur with "Could Snap Out of Depression." However, those who received any psychological or medical care were more inclined to disagree with the notion. Furthermore, people who were medical student were significantly three times more likely to disagree with the following statement “Won’t Vote For People With This Condition”. Moreover, people who had Schizophrenia before were significantly twice as likely to disagree with the previous statements. Conclusion: The current study found that many Jordanian college students have a stigma toward people with depression, anxiety and Schizophrenia. In addition, students with no history of depression, anxiety or Schizophrenia showed higher stigma in some subscale items toward people with the mental issues. The present results suggest that more anti-stigma actions should be applied to Jordanian college students to help prevent or reduce stigma attitudes toward people with these mental issues. Abstract:
Breast cancer is one of the most dangerous diseases in the world and almost two million new cases are diagnosed every year. It starts from the breasts tissue and then spreads to other parts of the body. Early detection of breast cancer is important to save the life of a woman as it is related with a risen number of available treatment options. Benign and malignant are the major types of tumors and they are cancerous and non-cancerous, respectively. Benign is not dangerous since it does not destroy the nearby tissues and cannot spread or grow. Malignant tumor invades neighbouring tissues, blood vessels and spreads to other parts of the body by metastasis. Therefore, differentiating malignant from benign will help to detect breast cancer in its early stage. Nowadays, machine learning techniques are used to classify the tumor types hence the quality of lift is increased.
