Abstract:
Abstract Stinger (clopyralid), Manage (MON 12051) and Basagran (bentazon) postemergence applications were evaluated for phytotoxicity on five species of landscape plants grown in containers. Stinger (clopyralid) was less injurious than Manage (MON 12051). Crape Myrtle (Lagerstroemia indica L. ‘Carolina Beauty’) was injured from Stinger (clopyralid) application 3 and 6 weeks after treatment (WAT). Manage (MON 12051) caused foliar damage to Crape Myrtle (Lagerstroemia indica L. ‘Carolina Beauty’) (1992), Cotoneaster (Cotoneaster dammeri C.K. Schneid. ‘Coral Beauty’) (1992 and 1993), and Dwarf Japanese Juniper (Juniperus chinensis procumbens Endl. ‘Nana’) (1993) at 3 and 6 WAT. Foliar applications of Basagran (bentazon) injured Crape Myrtle (Lagerstroemia indica L. ‘Carolina Beauty’) in 1992 and Cotoneaster (Cotoneaster dammeri C.K. Schneid. ‘Coral Beauty’) in both years. Manage (MON 12051) reduced the growth of Cotoneaster (Cotoneaster dammeri C.K. Schneid. ‘Coral Beauty’) in both years. Hetzi Blue (Juniperus chinensis L. ‘Hetzi Glauca’) growth index was reduced by Manage (MON 12051) in 1992. Stinger (clopyralid) reduced the growth of Dwarf Japanese Juniper (Juniperus chinensis procumbens Endl. ‘Nana’) at the highest rate in 1992. Parsons (Juniperus chinensis L. ‘Parsoni’) and Blue Pacific (Juniperus conferta Parl. ‘Blue Pacific’) junipers were not affected by these herbicides in this study.

Abstract:
In July of 2007, fire blight symptoms were observed on Cotoneaster dammeri cv. Skogholm in a nursery near Županja, Vukovarsko-Srijemska County, in eastern Croatia. In this region, the first outbreak of fire blight was noted on apple in 1995 (2). Symptoms on cotoneaster were necrotic shoots and petioles. Immunofluorescence assay (IFA) with polyclonal antibodies (Loewe Biochemica GmbH, Sauerlach, Germany) was performed on extracts from blighted C. dammeri cv. Skogholm shoots and were found to be positive for Erwinia amylovora. Round, mucoid, whitish colonies were isolated from extracts of plant tissues with symptoms of fire blight spread on King's medium B and incubated for 2 days at 28°C. Bacterial ooze and necrosis of the inoculation site were observed on immature pear fruits inoculated with a 106 CFU/ml suspension of the isolate. Bacteria were reisolated and the species identity was confirmed by PCR and primers targeting pEA29 DNA (1). E. amylovora was previously reported only on native Cotoneaster spp. (3). To our knowledge, this is the first report of fire blight on C. dammeri cv. Skogholm from a commercial ornamental nursery in Croatia. References: (1) S. Bereswill et al. Appl. Environ. Abstract:
The comprehensive identification of secondary metabolites represents a fundamental step for the assessment of bioactivities and pharmacological properties of traditional herbal drugs. Rumex usambarensis (Dammer) Dammer has been described as a multipurpose remedy in different African traditional pharmacopoeias, but its phytochemical profile has not been properly investigated. Herein we report a high throughput metabolomic screening, based on ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-travelling wave ion mobility spectrometry quadrupole time-of-flight (UHPLC-TWINS-QTOF), which was performed for the first time on different R. usambarensis plant parts. By applying high-resolution mass spectrometry-based metabolomics and chemometric analysis, a complete discrimination of different aerial parts was obtained, with the annotation of 153 significant metabolites in leaves, stems, and flowers, suggesting an easy authentication and discrimination route. Phytochemical data were correlated to antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. Flavonoids, benzopyranes, chromones, and xanthones derivatives, along with a richer phytocomplex, might be responsible for the stronger bioactivities obtained from flowers.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Kingslake, Jonathan. "Modelling ice-dammed lake drainage." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2013. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/4630/.

Full text
Abstract:
The drainage of ice-dammed lakes produces floods that can pose hazards, waste water resources and modulate ice flow. In this thesis I investigate several aspects of ice-dammed lake drainage through the development and analysis of mathematical models. After an introduction in the first chapter and a description of the mathematical background to the thesis in the second, the third chapter investigates the mechanisms behind observed variability in the size and timing of subglacial floods from ice-dammed lakes. In particular, I examine how environmental controls like the weather and the shape of glaciers affect floods. In the next chapter, I quantify how well simple models can predict the dates of floods from an ice-marginal lake in Kyrgyzstan. I find that incorporating environmental controls into models improves their prediction ability. Next I investigate the coupling between subglacial drainage and glacier motion during ice-dammed lake drainage by developing and analysing a model which couples a marginal lake, glacier sliding, subglacial drainage through a channel and subglacial drainage through a distributed system of cavities. I show how changes in lake level cause the rate at which a glacier slides to increase during the first half of floods and decrease during the second half. The next two chapters are concerned with two lake-drainage scenarios that involve water flowing as an open stream: firstly, the subglacial open-channel flow that occurs after a marginal lake drains completely during a flood, and secondly, the drainage of supraglacial lakes across the surface of ice sheets. I end the thesis with a summary of my findings and some suggestions of theoretical and field-based investigations that are worthwhile pursing in the future.

Abstract:
The Mara River map area consists of extensive glacially and meltwater scoured bedrock, deposits of hummocky till, fluted till blanket, and till veneer throughout the map area, glaciofluvial sediments within major river valleys, and postglacial marine sediments in coastal lowlands. The boundaries of many till deposits were eroded to bedrock by proglacial and subglacial meltwater, and locally northwest-trending corridors are defined by eskers. Glacially dammed lakes, associated with deltas between 450 m and 230 m elevation, occupied some river valleys where retreating or stagnant ice impeded drainage to the east and north. Striations and streamlined landforms indicate a north-northwestward regional ice flow in the eastern and northern regions, diverging to a west-southwestward flow in the western regions. A series of glaciomarine and marine deltas, and fine-grained sediments record the marine incursion up to 200 m elevation. Isostatic rebound caused marine regression, forming deltas between 200 m and 60 m, and raised beaches from 150 m elevation to current sea level.
