Abstract:
Although neural-network architectures are critical for their performance, how the structural characteristics of a neural network affect its performance has still not been fully explored. Here, we map architectures of neural networks to directed acyclic graphs (DAGs), and find that incoherence, a structural characteristic to measure the order of DAGs, is a good indicator for the performance of corresponding neural networks. Therefore, we propose a deep isotropic neural-network architecture by folding a chain of the same blocks and then connecting the blocks with skip connections at different distances. Our model, named FoldNet, has two distinguishing features compared with traditional residual neural networks. First, the distances between block pairs connected by skip connections increase from always equal to one to specially selected different values, which lead to more incoherent graphs and let the neural network explore larger receptive fields and, thus, enhance its multi-scale representation ability. Second, the number of direct paths increases from one to multiple, which leads to a larger proportion of shorter paths and, thus, improves the direct propagation of information throughout the entire network. Image-classification results on CIFAR-10 and Tiny ImageNet benchmarks suggested that our new network architecture performs better than traditional residual neural networks. FoldNet with 25.4M parameters can achieve 72.67% top-1 accuracy on the Tiny ImageNet after 100 epochs, which is competitive compared with the-state-of-art results on the Tiny ImageNet.

Abstract:
Resource is an important constraint when deploying Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) on mobile and edge devices. Existing works commonly adopt the cell-based search approach, which limits the flexibility of network patterns in learned cell structures. Moreover, due to the topology-agnostic nature of existing works, including both cell-based and node-based approaches, the search process is time consuming and the performance of found architecture may be sub-optimal. To address these problems, we propose AutoShrink, a topology-aware Neural Architecture Search (NAS) for searching efficient building blocks of neural architectures. Our method is node-based and thus can learn flexible network patterns in cell structures within a topological search space. Directed Acyclic Graphs (DAGs) are used to abstract DNN architectures and progressively optimize the cell structure through edge shrinking. As the search space intrinsically reduces as the edges are progressively shrunk, AutoShrink explores more flexible search space with even less search time. We evaluate AutoShrink on image classification and language tasks by crafting ShrinkCNN and ShrinkRNN models. ShrinkCNN is able to achieve up to 48% parameter reduction and save 34% Multiply-Accumulates (MACs) on ImageNet-1K with comparable accuracy of state-of-the-art (SOTA) models. Specifically, both ShrinkCNN and ShrinkRNN are crafted within 1.5 GPU hours, which is 7.2× and 6.7× faster than the crafting time of SOTA CNN and RNN models, respectively.

Abstract:
Data handling and provisioning play a dominant role in the structure of modern cloud–fog-based architectures. Without a strict, fast, and deterministic method of exchanging data we cannot be sure about the performance and efficiency of transactions and applications. In the present work we propose an architecture for a Data as a Service (DaaS) Marketplace, hosted exclusively in a cloud environment. The architecture includes a storage management engine that ensures the Quality of Service (QoS) requirements, a monitoring component that enables real time decisions about the resources used, and a resolution engine that provides semantic data discovery and ranking based on user queries. We show that the proposed system outperforms the classic ElasticSearch queries in data discovery use cases, providing more accurate results. Furthermore, the semantic enhancement of the process adds extra results which extend the user query with a more abstract definition to each notion. Finally, we show that the real-time scaling, provided by the data storage manager component, limits QoS requirements by decreasing the latency of the read and write data requests.

It is known that the architectural profession interacts with different professional disciplines at national and international universities that provide architectural education. These professions should be included in architectural education programs, especially because architecture is related to different disciplines such as civil engineering, interior architecture, landscape architecture, urban and regional planning. In this respect, design students studying in the field of architecture need to acquire interdisciplinary vocational education in order to develop their imagination, ability of thinking and to realize what they thinked.

In this context, a survey was conducted with 61 students from the 4th grade students who took the Landscape Design course in the Architecture Department of Avrasya University, which provides architectural education. The students who attended the lessons were asked for their opinions about whether the lessons contributing their professional quality or not. Survey questions were analyzed by SPSS Statistics 24 analysis program. The students who participated in the survey stated that the course was especially helpful when designing the site plan, determining the site elevations and building entry-exit points. In addition, students stated that they would like to take the landscape design course in 2nd grade instead of taking in the 4th grade.

Öz

Mesleki disiplinler arasındaki ortak çalışmalar, eğitim öğretimin başarısı üzerinde önemli bir etkiye sahiptir. Abstract:
This paper concentrates on the rate analysis and optimization for a downlink cell-free massive multi-input multi-output (MIMO) system with mixed digital-to-analog converters (DACs), where some of the access points (APs) use perfect-resolution DACs, while the others exploit low-resolution DACs to reduce hardware cost and power consumption. By using the additive quantization noise model (AQNM) and conjugate beamforming receiver, a tight closed-form rate expression is derived based on the standard minimum mean square error (MMSE) channel estimate technique. With the derived result, the effects of the number of APs, the downlink transmitted power, the number of DAC bits, and the proportion of the perfect DACs in the mixed-DAC architecture are conducted. We find that the achievable sum rate can be improved by increasing the proportion of the perfect DACs and deploying more APs. Besides, when the DAC resolution arrives at 5-bit, the system performance will invariably approach the case of perfect DACs, which indicates that we can use 5-bit DACs to substitute the perfect DACs. Thus, it can greatly reduce system hardware cost and power consumption. Finally, the weighted max–min power allocation scheme is proposed to guarantee that the users with high priority have a higher rate, while the others are served with the same rate. The simulation results prove the proposed scheme can be effectively solved by the bisection algorithm.

Abstract:
If the medieval canopy of state remains until the end of the European monarchies, the enthusiasm for it faded rapidly after their collapse, leading to the loss of the object and its name. It is thus stunning to realize how the canopy of state and its twins, the liturgical canopy and the gothic canopy, are nowadays totally unknown and unexploited structures. If we vaguely know the canopy for having encountered it during a touristic visit of a castle or on the facade of Gothic cathedrals, we do not know any more what the word canopy [dais in French] refers to. Has the canopy disappeared from our contemporary world? If we adopt an anthropological viewpoint and think, after Aby Warburg, of a time which is always reborn, then we can imagine that the structure of the medieval canopy may have survived in contemporary art. Why and how do the notion and the shape of the canopy persist in Western contemporary art while today they seem confused and outdated? The words persistence and survival have to do with the collective unconscious, which implies that the artists reuse some forms that already appeared in the past without looking for reproducing them consciously, deliberately. The strategy of this study is to select French, Flemish and Italian artworks of the 15th century and from 1960 to nowadays in order to investigate the possible similarity between the new and the ancient forms of the canopy. The goal is to define rigorously what the reminiscences of the shape of the old canopy are, which we call “manners of canopy” [“manières de dais”]. It is thus needed to know exactly what a canopy is and what concerns are related to it in terms of lexicons, symbols and representations

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Adaptability for software applications can be separated into two categories. First relates to the behavioral adaptation also called algorithmic adaptation. This adaptation addresses the redefinition of the behavior of the application and its components and implies, for example, adding a new method into the interface of a component or updating the orchestration protocol that coordinates a set of services. Second category, in which we can classify our work, relates to the structural adaptation and implies a reconfiguration at the architectural level. This kind of reconfiguration deals with the organization of the architecture and involve, for instance, the substitution of a failing component by another with same functionalities or the redirection for a customer of a service which does not respect the QoS contract towards a service likely to offer better guarantees. In this thesis, we specify a meta-model relating to the description and the automatic management of dynamic architectures. Architecture instances are described by extended graphs where components (or services) are represented by vertices, and interdependencies (e. G. Connections, relations of control. . . Etc) are described by edges. The architectural styles are specified by extended graph grammars. The meta-model considers descriptions by admitting various abstraction levels and offers mechanisms to either abstract or refine descriptions according to specific points of view. It, also, makes it possible to describe architecture management protocols and to characterize the architectural properties to be preserved for each considered architectural level. We developed an algorithm for graph homomorphisms building and an algorithm for graph transformation in the context of extended graph grammars defined for our meta-model. .

Abstract:
As early as 1934, the official National-Socialist architecture takes a stand which sets it apart from ail things past, bringing out the very peculiar monumentality of the period. Analyzing the characteristics and the sources of this state architecture during the early years of the Third Reich, constitutes the main theme of the present thesis. P.L. Troost, who designed the first buildings of the Party in Munich, Ernst Sagebiel, author of the Tempelhof Airport and Göring's Ministry in Berlin, Hans Reissinger who designed a building with a composite envelop meant for the Reich teachers' Association in Bayreuth, and finally Ludwig and F. Ruff who designed a gigantic hall to accommodate the Party's conventions in Nuremberg, are the architects who se works are being reviewed. Their buildings present monumental forms which are quite remote from simplistic neo-classical references. These works are marked by great representational demands and yet, in some cases, they also respond to functionality in a highly efficient way. This study of the chosen buildings attempts to observe, from the moment of conception through the evolution of sketches and models, an ever-increasing monumentality: the establishment of a mode of composition favoring organizing symmetries of plans and elevations and the final embellishment of the facades with added-on elements, the reached-for effect being always more important than any other consideration. A sculptured iconography glorifying the regime and the Reich, with its signs, symbols and freezes, completes this setting. The concept of a German tectonic, so privileged by historians of the regime, expressing the essence of this official architecture in its search for original forms, is therefore examined in detail, revealing the roots it refers to: at its center is a newly-recreated mythical Germany as cradle of the universe. Abstract:
Architecture is changing because the world is changing. The impact of environmental issues on the way of thinking architecture, and also on architectural ideas and architectural forms, is the subject of this research. The building sector is now considered as an important tool in order to solve the environmental crisis. However, discrepancies are increasing between, on the one hand, urgent and regulatory requirements to achieve specific quantitative targets and, on the other, the need for architecture to be thought of in connection with a new environmental culture.Energy transition. Environmental transition. Architectural transition? How to define this neomorphisation process. This research concerns the transition period that started in the late 1990s and where the scenarios are projected up to the 2050s. The objective is to define concepts and tools, to characterize the architectural transition towards an environmental architecture, in an open and multidisciplinary manner, and to provide food for thought. The concepts of “architectural neomorphism” and “Neomorphic Potential” (PN) are created, in response to the context of a transition in progress. By analogy with the neologism which designates a new word that renews and enriches language, architectural neomorphism indicates a new form. In the same way, it results from a morphological process, creative, experimental, rich and complex, specific to transition periods. The resulting “Neomorphic Potentials” of environmental architecture describe the ideas which are behind the new architectural forms. The specific quality of this research work is based on an original approach to architectural thought, from ideas to forms and from forms to ideas, and on the creation of “analogical spaces”. They are composed as a result of the confrontation of three corpora : a corpus of ideas (PN), a corpus of manifest architectural forms and a corpus of subversive artistic forms. They are designed to active debate, to question the concept of accuracy and to stimulate our thinking about architecture, to escape standard ways of thinking and to promote outside-the-box thinking. These theoretical elements are reinvested in making a model of a thesaurus. The "Thesaurus of environmental architecture, from ideas to forms and from forms to ideas" is both a monitoring tool and a resource centre. It gives the opportunity to discover, to take on board and to think environmental architecture through a new descriptive framework using analogical spaces. Offered on the principle of an online collaborative tool, it calls for a multicultural approach to architecture so that knowledge can be shared in a lively, interactive way.The model of the Thesaurus of environmental architecture opens up the way for new teaching methods directed towards the identification of new references. Its ambition is to contribute to a contemporary history of ideas and forms of environmental architecture

Abstract:
This dissertation investigates the relationships between architecture and literature. Its aim is to understand in which way literature describes and represents architecture. After an examination of the similitude between these two disciplines, an analysis is made on the rhetoric of the architectural description. The manners of the “ut architectura poesis” are represented by the concepts ekphrasis, descriptio, enargeia, evidentia, amplificatio and digressio. Architectural description was formalised in poetry through the Progymnasmata, ancient Greek rhetoric exercises for the orator. Here, the representation of imaginary places is called Topothesia. Once the link between the two arts is explained, the dissertation focalises on the analysis of the architectural description in the Orlando furioso (the “Orlando enraged”) by Ludovico Ariosto. We consider especially the last redaction of the manuscript which took place in Ferrara in 1532. In the poem appear many architectural buildings. Few of them emulate the architectural mania of the Renaissance nor the typical buildings of the period. Others represent the original fantasy of the poet. Through architecture, the Orlando furioso reveals a deep relation with the court of Ferrara and the Este’s family. Many architectural descriptions are dedicated to the court and work in praise of their power. Moreover, and on a deeper level, architecture operates as a mise en abyme of the story, a metaphor which plays like a mirror with the plot of the Orlando furioso

Abstract:
Video games simulate the informational complexity of reality. In this task, it is subject to the calculation limits of the digital machine. Unconsciously, and as the machine evolves, the video game rewrites a history of architectural representation by seeking its optimum: the most effective architectural design figure to display the information that makes it playable. The figures generated by the two disciplines allow us to demonstrate that video games restore a form of habitability in the architect's project. It is defined above all as an architectured two-dimensional representation. The BIM model that integrates the physical data of the material is the only figure in the architectural project that has not yet been exploited by video games. In the experimental part of this study, we will undertake the realization of a game that tests our hypotheses: RUCKBALL. We will try to understand the modalities of the architectural project in this bodyless environment. We will observe the current limitations of reality simulation in this field. Finally, we will conclude by formulating a prospective study on the future of these two disciplines

Abstract:
Abstract Brazilian Pre-salts fields lie in approximately 2200 m w.d. in a challenging environment and are often characterized by highly corrosive produced fluids that pushed to the extreme the application of the most advanced material technology and engineering. Nevertheless, Lula, Sapinhoá, Mero and Búzios are definitively world-class prospects with production rates that may exceed 30.000 barrels per day per well. The development scheme of the Pre-salt fields followed the experience and the track record of the large number of deepwater fields that were previously developed in Brazil, in the post-salt regions, and is based on satellite wells tied to the floating production platform by means of dedicated production and service risers (i.e. each well has dedicated production and service lines). This satellite configuration offers the advantage to be simple, straightforward and resilient to field layout changes even during the project execution phase. However, the continuous pressure to which the Oil & Gas industry is exposed in order to increase profitability, reduce cost and, more recently, green house gas emission is encouraging Operators to evaluate different field architectures that are more traditionally implemented in other deepwater provinces outside Brazil and that the recent technology and construction asset developments made suitable also for a potential application in the Pre-salt fields. Moreover, those field architectures that are normally based on commingling of wells production are also prone to provide a faster production ramp-up and a reduced time to break even. This paper presents a description of possible Daisy Chain and Manifold-Based subsea architectures that are suitable to be applied to Brazilian pre-salt fields. The pros and cons of these alternative subsea layouts are explored. Additionally, cost and schedule analyses are presented to show the benefits of such architecture regarding CAPEX and ramp-up compared to satellite architecture, considering the "Brazilian pre-salt" scenario. Finally, a generic proposal for subsea architecture is presented for pre-salt developments jointly with practical solutions for typical operation demands related to flow assurance issues like, for instance, wax and hydrate management.

Abstract:
Abstract: The concept of “ineffable space” unquestionably occupies a central place in Le Corbusier's architectural theory after 1945. Far from being a portmanteau or a signifier devoid of meaning, the concept of ineffable space is aimed at conceiving the height of aesthetic and spiritual experience rendered possible by architecture. This is as much to realise plastic emotion felt in front of masterpiece from the past as to describe the experiential quality that the architect seeks to produce in his/her own work. Thus, in Le Corbusier’s oeuvre, the expression “ineffable space” not only denotes a concept but also a textual whole in which the concept is thematised and through which it is progressively constituted. The aim of this article is two-fold. On the one hand, I propose a description of the principle determinants of the content that Le Corbusier assigns to the concept of “ineffable space”, and on the other hand, analysing the archives, I wish to take stock of the texts in which this concept is formulated. Abstract:
Abstract: The research focuses on Le Corbusier educational process and on his ability to abstract, through his memories, the images related to the knowledge of the Ancient World; a study that addresses the clear connection between the works of Le Corbusier and his knowledge of Roman architecture, outlining two interpretations: the first one linked to the archetype of classic models, and the second one to ruins and archaeological landscape. The first interpretation clearly illustrates the rational perspective, the will to pursue an universal architecture distinguished by use of reason, that only archetypes can teach, whereas the second interpretation attempts to outline the relationship between the evocative influence of the ruin and the personal suggestions of the architect. Retracing the steps of his educational process, the research investigates the knowledge acquired by the young Jeanneret during his German stay (1910-1911). This is the first phase of the study of Roman architecture, that inspires him an interest that will be pursued later through the experience of the Voyage d 'Orient and the study of some sources, such as Piranesi's views. This learning is reflected in numerous drawings and reflections contained in Carnet 4 and in Carnet 5, elaborated during his stay in Rome. These experiences will be a source of inspiration for his architectural production and theoretical assumptions, and they seem to be reflected in some works of the architect, as the Chandigarh Haute Cour of 1952. Abstract:
This paper presents some recurring issues in Architectural Design and, from them, discusses general aspects of the relationship between architecture, city and the formation process of the professional architect as a whole. The approach focuses on the significant role of architecture in the definition of urban space, considered here as one of the key variables of the design process. The listed issues arise from the teaching practice in higher education, as well as wider theoretical and methodological aspects. From there, the work deepens the understanding that, for an effective experience of the different dimensions of architectural design, is essential to conciliate urban and architectural contents in the design studio, as well as to consider different scales of intervention and analysis. Contextualizing the discussion, the work details the experience we have had with teaching in the Course of Architecture and Urban Planning of the Federal University of Santa Catarina, background of developed reflection.

Background:Sweetpotato is a high value vegetable crop in Israel and the U.S. and acreage is expanding in both countries and the research herein represents an important backstop to improving quality, consistency, and yield. This research has two broad objectives, both relating to sweetpotato storage root formation. The first objective is to understand storage root inductive conditions and describe the anatomical and physiological stages of storage root development. Sweetpotato is propagated through vine cuttings. These vine cuttings form adventitious roots, from pre-formed primordiae, at each node underground and it is these small adventitious roots which serve as initials for storage and fibrous (non-storage) “feeder” roots. What perplexes producers is the tremendous variability in storage roots produced from plant to plant. The marketable root number may vary from none to five per plant. What has intrigued us is the dearth of research on sweetpotato during the early growth period which we hypothesize has a tremendous impact on ultimate consistency and yield. The second objective is to identify genes that change the root physiology towards either a fleshy storage root or a fibrous “feeder” root. Understanding which genes affect the ultimate outcome is central to our research. Major conclusions: For objective one, we have determined that the majority of adventitious roots that are initiated within 5-7 days after transplanting possess the anatomical features associated with storage root initiation and account for 86 % of storage root count at 65 days after transplanting. These data underscore the importance of optimizing the growing environment during the critical storage root initiation period. Water deprivation during this phenological stage led to substantial reduction in storage root number and yield as determined through growth chamber, greenhouse, and field experiments. Morphological characterization of adventitious roots showed adjustments in root system architecture, expressed as lateral root count and density, in response to water deprivation. For objective two, we generated a transcriptome of storage and lignified (non-storage) adventitious roots. This transcriptome database consists of 55,296 contigs and contains data as regards to differential expression between initiating and lignified adventitious roots. The molecular data provide evidence that a key regulatory mechanism in storage root initiation involves the switch between lignin biosynthesis and cell division and starch accumulation. We extended this research to identify genes upregulated in adventitious roots under drought stress. A subset of these genes was expressed in salt stressed plants.
