Abstract:
One way of ex-Commercial Sex Workers to be accepted in society is by studying religion and looking for preachers who can help them understand religious communication. Meanwhile, the Da'i provide religious communication through da'wah to try to save ex-Commercial Sex Workers to get the right path. This research focuses on social phenomena about how Da'i's communication experience provides lessons through religious communication of spiritual coaching in former prostitution at Padang City. The experience can be seen from three aspects, namely religious communication of former prostitution in spiritual formation based on subjective experiences, symbolic interaction forms constructed by Da'i in conveying religious communication to ex-prostitutes and how Da'i constructs religious communication behavior in former prostitution after resign as sex worker. This research uses a qualitative method with a constructive paradigm. The data collection method is interview, observation and documentation. The informants of this research are da'I and former prostitution. This research was analyzed and dissected with phenomenological, symbolic interactional theory and reality construction. The results of this study are the communication of the Dai Religion in Spiritual Development in Former Prostitution in Padang conducted the first stage of the Moral Development method, the Second Stage of self-transformation and the third Stage of intellectual capacity building. Symbolic interaction is shown by Dai in communicating communication messages through verbal symbols that is more to language. Construction of the Meaning of Former prostitution by Dai to former prostituses after quitting employment in disguised prostitution is that ex-prostitution must be appreciated.

Abstract:
The impact of neutrosophy has increased rapidly in many areas of science and technology in recent years. Furthermore, numerous applications of the neutrosophic theory have become more usual. We aim to use neutrosophy to enhance Dai–Liao conjugate gradient (CG) iterative method. In particular, we suggest and explore a new neutrosophic logic system intended to compute the essential parameter t required in Dai–Liao CG iterations. Theoretical examination and numerical experiments signify the effectiveness of the introduced method for controlling t. By incorporation of the neutrosophy in the Dai–Liao conjugate gradient principle, we established novel Dai–Liao CG iterations for solving large-scale unconstrained optimization problems. Global convergence is proved under standard assumptions and with the use of the inexact line search. Finally, computational evidence shows the computational effectiveness of the proposed fuzzy neutrosophic Dai–Liao CG method.

Abstract:
This paper seeks to emphasize that Dai has serious religious responsibility for environmental damage that has occurred in Indonesia, especially in seven provinces that have peat areas. For those environmental damages, whether intentional or unintentional by anyone, even any group, even the State, was the target of the Da'i's preaching, of course. Dai in the peat land who can preach is one who has participated in training and workshops and is in accordance with his ability to broadcast MUI fatwas on the environment, ecosystems, forests and land fires. The theory used in this paper is da'wah and local train theory whose material content strongly refers to the fatwa of the MUI. The purpose of this paper is to find out the dais religious response to the environment of peat land in an Islamic perspective and dai's serious efforts in preaching is a form of religious and social responsibility carried out by Dai and this is necessary to get serious support also from all walks of course.

Abstract:
Since most health care professionals are trained in acute care settings where all efforts are employed to prolong life, they may not be comfortable caring for dying patients. Hospice professionals have a lot of experience dealing with dying patients. The purpose of this study was to compare and contrast the death attitudes of hospice and hospital-based health care professionals. The construct theory for the study was that comfort in dealing with dying patients is based on 1) personal beliefs about death and 2) experience dealing with dying patients. Seventy-six hospital and 106 hospice workers participated in the study and completed the thirty-four-item Death Attitude Index (DAI) and the fifteen-item Death Anxiety Scale [1]. The results showed that hospice employees had higher DAI scores (greater comfort caring for the terminally ill), as predicted. Social workers had the highest mean DAI scores and the lowest scores on the DAS (low death anxiety). Nurses aides exhibited high death anxiety and low comfort in dealing with terminal clients. For all disciplines, DAI and DAS scores were highly correlated (coefficient = −0.91). Independent variables that correlated with high DAI scores were educational level and a sacred (versus secular) value system.

Abstract:
Bishweshwar Prasad Koirala‟s novel Narendra Dai is replete with gender issues of the then society that has marked its relevance even at the present time. This article examines how this novel has explored the concept of gender as a per formative entity; and shows that the characters perform the traditional gender roles because of the strict socio-cultural obligations. It also examines while performing the traditional gender roles, how the lives of these characters get affected. For that Judith Butler’s idea of gender theory has been used. Butler proposes theory of gender as a constant performance: a series of cues observed, internalized, and repeated over time. The significance of this study is to contribute a different perspective for the reader to see Narendra Dai because in this novel, Koirala has shown that since the characters cannot go against the social norms, they perform traditional gender roles via social policing and polishing. The study concludes that these characters define the socially prescribed gender roles because gender is socio-political construction that achieves legitimacy and naturality via perpetual observation and repetition.

Abstract:
In both field theories of high energy physics and field theories of condensed matter theories anomalies have been imposing constraints and bringing up new theories. While the perturbational and local anomalies from triangle diagrams are well-developed, we follow and review two works leading to non-perturbational global anomalies both related with Atiyah-Patogi-Sieger (APS) index theorem. In the context of topological fieldtheories the APS index theorem imposes an η-invariant which adds a global anomalous e−iπη/2 to the path integral from each fermions on the boundary. In the case of Pin+ (4) this will require a multiple of 16 Majorana fermions for the global anomaly to cancel. On the other hand with Dai-Freed theorem, global ’t Hooft anomalies concerned to G symmetry group on 4-dimensional spin manifold which is also classifying space BG are studied. The existence of anomalies are related to the triviality of spin bordismgroup Ω Spin5(BG), where examples with SU(2), GSM and Zn are studied with Atiyah-Hirzebruch spectral sequence method and representation of Z n rings. Further there are extensions of spin groups from Pin, SpinZ4 and Spinc , where the anomaly cancellationconstraint of 16 fermions per generation from Spin Z 4 (4) is related to that of Pin + (4) in topological superconductor. A possible candidate of Z4 charge named B − L charge or X charge from several commutative breaking patterns of Spin(10) GUT is briefly discussed with Pati-Salam model and R ⊗ C ⊗ H ⊗ O.

Piccolomini, d'Aragona Antonio. "Dag Prawitz's theory of grounds." Thesis, Aix-Marseille, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019AIXM0590.

Full text
Abstract:
In his recent theory of grounds, Prawitz develops his semantic investigations towards an analysis of the epistemic power which valid inferences are endowed with to compel one to accept the conclusion, provided one is justified in holding the premises true. A ground is what one is in possession of when one is justified in asserting a sentence. Grounds are built by performing operations that allow to pass from an evidence state to another evidence state. An inferential act consists of an application of an operation on grounds. The theory of grounds allows for undoubted advancements with respect to Prawitz's previous proof-theoretic semantics. In particular, it provides a definition of the notion of valid inference which makes the epistemic power of proofs depend on the epistemic power of the valid inferences of which proofs are built up. But the two semantics also share a problem; in both of them, valid inferences and proofs might be such that it is impossible, for agents who perform them, to recognize that they justify their conclusions. We develop the formal framework of Prawitz's proposal, by introducing a "universe" of grounds and operations on grounds, as well as some formal languages and systems of grounds. Then, we focus on two issues: the completeness of intuitionistic logic, and the aforementioned recognizability problem

Isaacson, Summer. "“We the various races” : Developing Role theory: The Bakun dam case." Thesis, Uppsala universitet, Statsvetenskapliga institutionen, 2019. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-402321.

Full text
Abstract:
This descriptive essay aims to develop constructivist Role theory. Specifically, it examines the potential of applying role analysis to a case of two types of actors; marginalized citizens and their state decision makers. There has previously been little role analysis applied to domestic political settings, as opposed to internationally between states. Therefore, research has been encouraged in this area. The selected empirical case is the controversial Bakun hydroelectric dam project in Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo. It involves the resettlement of the marginalized indigenous Orang Ulu people and is driven by the Sarawak state government. By analyzing the role conceptions and norms of these actors, together with the concept of power, a new perspective on their relationship is developed. The successful application of Role theory in this new setting and case is a contributing point of the study. The role analysis is conducted using a qualitative critical text analysis method; an analytical framework is established with which the actors’ roles are retrieved from the text material. The results are then analyzed, and the conclusion of the case study is that the actors have incoherent conceptions of their roles and norms, leading to a conflict between the two in which the government has the upper hand due to (illegitimate) power structures.

Hales, Robert. "People, power and the state : Performativity and the Traveston Crossing Dam." Thesis, Griffith University, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10072/365617.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation uses a case study of the recently proposed dam on the Mary River at Traveston Crossing in South-East Queensland to consider how individuals can become empowered to effect change in the environmental decision-making processes of the state through citizen action in the public sphere. The theoretical framework chosen to guide the analysis is an adaptation of Judith Butler’s theory of performativity (1997) that I refer to as political performativity. I also draw on social movement theory and media theory to examine how the processes of performativity help explain the practices involved in the public sphere actions taken to stop the Queensland Government’s proposed dam. The case study demonstrates that the initial speech acts of the state government’s announcement, and the way in which these were carried out, impacted on the life worlds of people involved. The protesters’ actions were not only symbolic of their struggle but also part of the creation of an alternative life world vastly different to that imposed upon them through the various speech acts of the Queensland Government. Lessons for the future include the development of more conscious strategies for activists in public sphere actions. Potential research resulting from this study includes a closer examination of the relationship between speech acts, emotions and public sphere action. The usefulness of political performativity in understanding emotions, public sphere action and power may better be served through participatory research methodologies. Further research directions are outlined.

Abstract:
In this dissertation project, I examine the ways in which a grassroots environmental organization, the Upper French Broad Defense Association (UFBDA), was able to contribute knowledge and voice concerns regarding a Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) proposal between 1961 and 1972. The TVA proposal included a plan for comprehensive water resource development in western North Carolina which would have required in the implementation of 14 dams, flooding of more than 18,000 fertile agricultural acres and displacing 600 families from their ancestral homes. Employing archival research methods, in this dissertation I analyze the UFBDA's everyday rhetorical tactics which contributed to their overall success in preventing the implementation of the TVA project. I situate archival sources alongside contemporary scholarship in democratic practice, environmental rhetoric, rhetorical citizenship, and ethos, as discussed in rhetoric and writing studies. Overall, this dissertation demonstrates the ways in which the UFBDA case study offers a generative model for future environmental controversies, providing specific techniques which can contribute to the success of grassroots organizations mired in environmental controversies and contentious decisions.

In this dissertation project, I examine the ways in which a grassroots environmental organization, the Upper French Broad Defense Association (UFBDA), was able to contribute knowledge and voice concerns regarding a Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) proposal between 1961 and 1972. In order to complete this dissertation project, I explored two archival collections pertaining to the UFBDA. Based on my findings in the archives, I provide new understandings of how grassroots environmentalism works, particularly in terms of how environmentalists use language in order to participate in decisions about the environment. More specifically, this dissertation documents how members of the UFBDA were able to describe the western North Carolina landscape as a commons and not a wilderness, work together across counties to create new opportunities to share their concerns over the TVA project, and establish their own credibility as knowledgeable citizens about their local environment. By highlighting specific components of the UFBDA's work, this dissertation provides examples that can be used by future grassroots environmental organization facing similar challenges regarding environmental controversies.

Abstract:

Harper, Sally Anne. "Urban open space : user perceptions of the Avis dam environment." Diss., University of Pretoria, 1998. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/23461.

Abstract:
From its infancy, environmental psychology [which concerns itself with the coinfluencing interface between people and places] has required attention to actual context, and attention to social relevance. There has always been an emphasis on research into real problems within a context of meaningful theory, and on results which have potential not only for individuals, but also for policy-makers and those who execute that policy. This environmental psychology study is about the potential role of green open space in contributing towards quality of life in the city generally. It is also about a specific, wellloved urban open space in Namibia's capital city, Windhoek, the Avis dam environment, which is often the contentious target of proposed commercial development. At the moment, the Windhoek Municipality has no well-structured urban open space policy, and possibly also no full understanding of the meanings of the Avis dam for its users. This study hopes to make contributions to both these areas of policy-making. As the applicability of research findings to the development of public policies and community interventions depends very much on the suitability of the methodology and theories chosen (Stokols, 19911), this study begins with a discussion of systemic and ecosystemic thinking [Chapter Two]. They were chosen as the guiding metatheory for this study, not only because of their recognition of the inescapable connectedness between person and environment, but because of their personal appeal too. Chapter Three examines theories and models which are compatible with systems thinking, and which help understand the potentially positive psycho-social and socio-economic roles of urban open space generally, and how the extent of that potential in a specific open space may be appreciated and described. The implications of systemic/ecosystemic metatheory for the study's methodology and research design are discussed in Chapter Four, and the data collection methods, which comprised observation and interviewing, in Chapter Five. Ecosystemic thinkers do not believe that facts can be "found" [they are not there objectively, but co-emerge subjectively from people's individual and collective experience in a place], so Chapter Six deals with a co-emergent interpretation of the data gathered. Based on that interpretation, recommendations for urban open space policy generally, and the Avis dam environment specifically, are made in Chapter Seven. Conceptual strategies of environmental psychology. In D. Stokols& I. ZusammenfassungAufstellungen erzeugen unendlich viele Informationen.

Abstract:
In this study, changes in the viscoelastic material properties of brain tissue due to traumatic diffuse axonal injury (DAI) were investigated. The impact acceleration model was used to generate DAI in rat brain stem. The viscoelastic material properties of brain tissue along the corticospinal (CSpT) tract in the brain stem were characterized using an indentation technique and a quasilinear theory. The results show significant reduction in the elastic response of brain tissue due to injury. In regions with significantly more DAI, larger changes in the elastic shear modulus and relaxation function were observed. These findings can improve the injury predictability of computational models of brain injury.

Abstract:
Abstract Based on an analysis of the product development process and the study of relevant product development models, the paper presents a new approach aiming at modeling and supporting the design activity as the substantial activity within the product development process. The Autogenetic Design Theory is an approach advancing general design theories. It facilitates the integration of intuition, creativity and artificial intelligence into the conventional design process. To this end, a phase-like allocation of the design process is assumed as the essential structure and an evolutionary algorithm is integrated as the core facilitating purposeful searching and combining. Hence, the flow of the design process can be influenced as all requirements can be included and, on the other hand, intuition and creativity are ensured through the evolutionary algorithm.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper describes the development and testing of a novel approach to evaluating development interventions – the POInT approach. The authors used Bayesian causal modelling to integrate process and outcome data to generate insights about all aspects of the theory of change, including outcomes, mechanisms, mediators and moderators. They partnered with two teams who had evaluated or were evaluating complex development interventions: The UPAVAN team had evaluated a nutrition-sensitive agriculture intervention in Odisha, India, and the DIG team was in the process of evaluating a disability-inclusive poverty graduation intervention in Uganda. The partner teams’ theory of change were adapted into a formal causal model, depicted as a directed acyclic graph (DAG). The DAG was specified in the statistical software R, using the CausalQueries package, having extended the package to handle large models. Using a novel prior elicitation strategy to elicit beliefs over many more parameters than has previously been possible, the partner teams’ beliefs about the nature and strength of causal links in the causal model (priors) were elicited and combined into a single set of shared prior beliefs. The model was updated on data alone as well as on data plus priors to generate posterior models under different assumptions. Finally, the prior and posterior models were queried to learn about estimates of interest, and the relative role of prior beliefs and data in the combined analysis.

Full text
Abstract:
We present a heuristic control theory model that describes smoking under restricted and unrestricted access to cigarettes. The model is based on the allostasis theory and uses a formal representation of a multiscale opponent process. The model simulates smoking behavior of an individual and produces both short-term (“loading up” after not smoking for a while) and long-term smoking patterns (e.g., gradual transition from a few cigarettes to one pack a day). By introducing a formal representation of withdrawal- and craving-like processes, the model produces gradual increases over time in withdrawal- and craving-like signals associated with abstinence and shows that after 3 months of abstinence, craving disappears. The model was programmed as a computer application allowing users to select simulation scenarios. The application links images of brain regions that are activated during the binge/intoxication, withdrawal, or craving with corresponding simulated states. The model was calibrated to represent smoking patterns described in peer-reviewed literature; however, it is generic enough to be adapted to other drugs, including cocaine and opioids. Although the model does not mechanistically describe specific neurobiological processes, it can be useful in prevention and treatment practices as an illustration of drug-using behaviors and expected dynamics of withdrawal and craving during abstinence.

Kleman, Isabella. Onion storage diseases and their headspace volatiles. Faculty of Landscape Architecture, Horticulture and Crop Production Science, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.54612/a.602791tdo5.

Full text
Abstract:
Onion, Allium cepa, is one of the world’s most commonly produced and consumed vegetables. In order to be available year round in temperate climates onions must be stored for several months. During this time parts of the harvested weight of bulbs are lost to storage diseases, sprouting and respiration leading to loss of carbohydrates and water. Diseases developing in storage may be difficult to spot at early stages as bulbs are typically stored in large bins. However, storage diseases can change the volatile metabolite profile of the infected onions. Electronic sensors that detect the concentration of specific volatile compounds in the air could be deployed in storage facilities to detect these changes. This would provide an early warning system that could detect diseases developing in storage bins before it becomes obvious to a human observer. In this way, some of the losses that occur during storage of onions could be prevented. This introductory paper discusses some of the available literature on the facets of onion production that are connected to storage disease development and the detection of said storage diseases using headspace sampling and analysis. The focus of the paper is mainly on onion production and storage of long day cultivars in relatively cold, temperate climates, as the use of short day cultivars and warm storage in warmer climates comes with different challenges and diseases.

Full text
Abstract:
Because many patients reduce exercise following outpatient cardiac rehabilitation (CR), we developed an intervention to assist with the transition and evaluated its feasibility and preliminary efficacy using a one-group pretest–posttest design. Five CR patients were enrolled ~1 month prior to CR discharge and provided an activity tracker. Each week during CR they received a summary of their physical activity and steps. Following CR discharge, participants received an individualized report that included their physical activity and step history, information on specific features of the activity tracker, and encouraging messages from former CR patients for each of the next 6 weeks. Mixed model trajectory analyses were used to test the intervention effect separately for active minutes and steps modeling three study phases: pre-intervention (day activity tracking began to CR discharge), intervention (day following CR discharge to day when final report sent), and maintenance (day following the final report to ~1 month later). Activity tracking was successfully deployed and, with weekly reports following CR, may offset the usual decline in physical activity. When weekly reports ceased, a decline in steps/day occurred. A scaled-up intervention with a more rigorous study design with sufficient sample size can evaluate this approach further.

Durik, Amanda, Steven McGee, Edward Hansen, and Jennifer Duck. Comparing Middle School Students’ Responses to Narrative Versus Expository Texts on Situational and Individual Interest. The Learning Partnership, April 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.51420/conf.2014.1.

Full text
Abstract:
This project examined the effects of text genre on both situational and individual interest. Middle school students completed a three-session web-based learning module in the domain of ecology wherein they were randomly assigned to either narrative or expository readings that were matched on key idea units and other variables. Students reported individual interest in ecology on the day before and after their exposure to the module. Affective and cognitive situational interest was measured after the readings on each day of the module. The results showed that expository readings were perceived as more helpful for learning than were narrative readings, but this varied somewhat by initial individual interest. Although the narrative versions did not facilitate situational interest, there was a small effect on individual interest suggesting that learners exposed to narrative readings came to perceive the domain of ecology as a more meaningful discipline than did those exposed to expository readings.

Abstract:
Over the last two years, the Esade Center for Social Impact, which is part of Esade Business School in Spain, and its partner BBK, a banking foundation in Bilbao, have been at the center of a web of committed European foundation professionals sharing their thoughts, learnings, practices, frustrations, and eureka moments related to impact measurement and management (IMM). This paper is not a practical guide to Impact Measurement and Management (IMM) – we believe that there are other publications which may help with implementation. Rather, it recounts how foundations at different stages of development and with a range of profiles (corporate, family, operating, and grant-making) are going about IMM on a day-to-day basis and grappling with some of the challenges and philosophical issues arising. For the impact geeks, this will no doubt be interesting grist for the mill. For those not so deep into this space, it might provide an overview of where foundations are in Europe and how they are focusing their efforts on IMM. Our aim is that by synthesizing and sharing what we have heard in this safe space we can inform and inspire others.

Full text
