Abstract:
Diarylethenes with thiophene substituents belong to photoswitchable compounds (photoswitches or photochromes). Upon UV irradiation, their colorless open-ring isomers (DAE-o) convert to the colored closed-ring isomers (DAE-c), while the back reaction is induced only by visible light irradiation. A multiple photoswitching of diarylethenes usually results in irreversible photorearrangement of DAE-c to the so-called annulated isomers DAE-a, that are stable thermally and photochemically. In the present communication, structures of a series of diarylethenes as well as their isomers were optimized on the B3LYP/6-31G(d) level of theory. It was disclosed for the first time, that DAE-a destabilized relatively DAE-c by 1.71–14.00 kcal/mol. These results are important for design of photocontrollable molecules and materials, operated in the oneway (permanent manner).

Abstract:
It has previously been established that in a prestressed incompressible elastic plate, a near-critical instability mode can interact resonantly with two non-critical vibration modes and that the evolution equations for the three modes take the form d2 A1/dτ2 = -c0A1 - c1|A1|2A1 - γ1Ā2Ā3, dA2/dτ = γ2Ā1Ā3 and dA3/dτ = γ3Ā1Ā2, where a bar denotes complex conjugation, τ is a slow time variable and c0, c1, γ1, γ2, γ3 are real constants. In this paper, we analyze these amplitude equations using dynamical systems theory. Regions of the parametric space that correspond to bounded solutions are determined and some explicit representations of the bounded solutions are obtained. It is shown that the resonant-triad interaction can lead to chaotic motions.

Abstract:
In dynamic analysis of constrained multibody systems (MBS), the computer simulation problem essentially reduces to finding a numerical solution to higher-index differential-algebraic equations (DAE). This paper presents a hybrid method composed of multi-input multi-output (MIMO), nonlinear, variable-structure control (VSC) theory and post-stabilization from DAE solution theory for the computer solution of constrained MBS equations. The primary contributions of this paper are: (1) explicit transformation of constrained MBS DAE into a general nonlinear MIMO control problem in canonical form; (2) development of a hybrid numerical method that incorporates benefits of both Sliding Mode Control (SMC) and DAE stabilization methods for the solution of index-2 or index-3 MBS DAE; (3) development of an acceleration-level stabilization method that draws from SMC’s boundary layer dynamics and the DAE literature’s post-stabilization; and (4) presentation of the hybrid numerical method as one way to eliminate chattering commonly found in simulation of SMC systems. The hybrid method presented can be used to simulate constrained MBS systems with either holonomic, nonholonomic, or both types of constraints. In addition, the initial conditions (ICs) may either be consistent or inconsistent. In this paper, MIMO SMC is used to find the control law that will provide two guarantees. First, if the constraints are initially not satisfied (i.e., for inconsistent ICs) the constraints will be driven to satisfaction within finite time using SMC’s stabilization method, urobust,i=−ηisgnsi. Second, once the constraints have been satisfied, the control law, ueq and hybrid stabilization techniques guarantee surface attractiveness and satisfaction for all time. For inconsistent ICs, Hermite-Birkhoff interpolants accurately locate when each surface reaches zero, indicating the transition time from SMC’s stabilization method to those in the DAE literature. Abstract:
This study compared and analyzed the records of Dae Cha and Noewon Cha in Korean and Chinese historical records. This analysis showed that these two types of tea should be approached from an East Asian perspective, breaking the notion that had been recognized as unique domestic teas of Goryeo. In addition, Dae Cha and Noewon Cha are good research topics for understanding the negotiations of East Asian tea culture in the 10th century. An analysis of the records of the two countries suggested that Dae Cha was produced and used for 139 years from 909 to 1047 in the Wuyue, Min, and Goryeo dynasties. Noewon Cha may have existed throughout the Silla, Wuyue, and Goryeo Dynasties for 132 years, from 916 to 1047. Through this study, Dae Cha was produced in Muzhou, Zhejiang Province. Hence, the possibility that Noewon Cha could be Shilla's tea could be explored. In this paper, the Shilla theory, the Wuyue theory, and the Goryeo theory were raised in relation to the origin of Noewon Cha. In this study, some issues that need to be identified through future research have emerged. These include the problem with the name of Noewon Cha, which is marked differently in the records of the two countries, the problem of the production area of Noewon Cha, and the tea culture negotiation relationship between the countries that existed in the Korean Peninsula and the Chinese mainland in the 10th century. This study is expected to enrich the discourse of Dae Cha and Noewon Cha and give new vitality to research in this field.

Abstract:
Diarylethene is a prototypical molecular switch that can be reversibly photoisomerized between its open and closed forms. Ligands bpy-DAE-bpy, consisting of a phenyl-diarylethene-phenyl (DAE) central core and bipyridine (bpy) terminal substituents, are able to self-organize. They are investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy at the solid–liquid interface. Upon light irradiation, cooperative photochromic switching of the ligands is recognized down to the submolecular level. The closed isomers show different electron density of states (DOS) contrasts, attributed to the HOMO or LUMO molecular orbitals observed. More importantly, the LUMO images show remarkable differences between the open and closed isomers, attributed to combined topographic and electronic contrasts mainly on the DAE moieties. The electronic contrasts from multiple HOMO or LUMO distributions, combined with topographic distortion of the open or closed DAE, are interpreted by density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

Abstract:
The subject matter of this paper is the discrete atomic compression (DAC) of digital images, which is a lossy compression process based on the discrete atomic transform (DAT). The goal is to investigate the efficiency of the DAC algorithm. We solve the following tasks: to develop a general compression scheme using discrete atomic transform and to compare the results of DAC and JPEG algorithms. In this article, we use the methods of digital image processing, atomic function theory, and approximation theory. To compare the efficiency of DAC with the JPEG compression algorithm we use the sets of the classic test images and the classic aerial images. We analyze compression ratio (CR) and loss of quality, using uniform (U), root mean square (RMS) and peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR) metrics. DAC is an algorithm with flexible parameters. In this paper, we use “Optimal” and “Allowable” modes of this algorithm and compare them with the corresponding modes of JPEG. We obtain the following results: 1) DAC is much better than JPEG by the U-criterion of quality loss; 2) there are no significant differences between DAC and JPEG by RMS and PSNR criterions; 3) the compression ratio of DAC is much higher than the compression ratio of JPEG. In other words, the DAC algorithm saves more memory than the JPEG compression algorithm with not worse quality results. These results are due to the fundamental properties of atomic functions such as good approximation properties, the high order of smoothness and existence of locally supported basis in the spaces of atomic functions. Since generalized Fup-functions have the same convenient properties, it is clear that such compression results can be achieved by application of a generalized discrete atomic transform, which is based on these functions. We also discuss the obtained results in the terms of approximation theory and function theory. Conclusions: 1) it is possible to achieve better results with DAC than with JPEG; 2) application of DAC to image compression is more preferable than JPEG in the case when it is planned to use recognition algorithms; 3) further development and investigation of the DAC algorithm are promising

Abstract:
The dynamic equations of motion of the constrained multibody mechanical system are mixed differential-algebraic equations (DAE). The DAE systems cannot be solved using numerical integration methods that are commonly used for solving ordinary differential equations. To solve this problem, Baumgarte proposed a constraint stabilization method in which a position and velocity terms were added in the second derivative of the constraint equation. The disadvantage of this method is that there is no reliable method for selecting the coefficients of the position and velocity terms. Improper selection of these coefficients can lead to erroneous results. In this study, stability analysis methods in digital control theory are used to solve this problem. Correct choice of the coefficients for the Runge-Kutta method is found.

Abstract:

Abstract This paper puts forward a reliability estimation method by the Degradation Amount Distribution (DAD) of products, using a composite time series modeling procedure and grey theory based on a random failure threshold. Product DAD data are treated as a composite time series and described using a composite time series model to predict a long-term trend of degradation. The degradation test is processed for a certain electronic product and the degradation data is collected for reliability estimation. Comparison among the reliability evaluation by DAD composite time series analysis and grey theory, based on a constant and a random failure threshold, reliability evaluation by DAD regression analysis based on a random failure threshold, reliability evaluation by degradation path time series analysis, and real reliability of the electronic product is done. The results show that the reliability evaluation of the product using the method proposed is the most creditable of all.

Abstract:
Abstract BACKGROUND: Vascular access is fundamental to any endovascular intervention. Concentric Medical has developed the Outreach Distal Access Catheter (DAC), which affords stable access at the target vessel modulating the forces at play within the thrombectomy device complex. The DAC is a device with novel access characteristics useful in a host of other types of clinical scenarios. OBJECTIVE: To review our experience with the DAC family of devices, the theory, and method of use. METHODS: A retrospective review of all cases in which the DAC was used during the period 2008 to 2010 was conducted and the cases classified by indication. Catheter-related complications were recorded. The use of the DAC in a variety of settings including intracranial stenting, aneurysm coil embolization, and arteriovenous malformation embolization is described. RESULTS: The DAC was used in 103 procedures performed in 93 patients between August 2008 and February 2010. Indications included acute stroke, treatment of intracranial atherosclerosis, vasospasm therapy, arteriovenous malformation embolization, and aneurysm embolization. In those procedures, 113 catheters were used. No complications directly attributable to DAC use were identified. CONCLUSION: The DAC is useful for gaining access to the cerebral vasculature, especially in patients with significant tortuosity or when re-access of distal vasculature is required multiple times.

Purpose – Model order reduction (MOR) has been widely used in the electric networks but little has been done to reduce higher index differential algebraic equations (DAEs). The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach – Most methods first do an index reduction before reducing a higher DAE but this can lead to a loss of physical properties of the system. Findings – The paper presents a MOR method for DAEs called the index-aware MOR (IMOR) which can reduce a DAE while preserving its physical properties such as the index. The feasibility of this method is tested on real-life electric networks. Abstract:
Despite the influx of data analytics (DA) practices among firms, their impact on operational performance remains ambiguous. This study examined the pull and push factors affecting the data analytics adoption (DAA) from the theoretical perspectives of the technology–organization–environment (TOE) model, theory of perceived risk (TPR), and resource-based view (RBV). The study analyzed data from 169 firms on the basis of the positivist paradigm and employed the partial least square to run the reflective–formative two-stage analysis. Accordingly, the results indicated that the three TOE model aspects exhibited a positive direct impact on DAA and indirectly impacted operational performance through DAA. However, the perceived risk did not display a similar effect in both situations. This study further revealed that the environment push factor had more explanatory power than the perceived risk pull factor, suggesting that a conducive TOE environment would motivate DAA, subsequently enhancing operational performance. The study provided valuable empirical evidence on the determinants of DAA and its subsequent effect on firms’ operational performance. Uniquely, the study also contributed to the literature from the perspective of higher-order-construct analysis in examining the determinants of DAA and its effect on operational performance. Furthermore, the mediation analysis covered the interaction of indirect-path coefficients, minimizing errors in interpreting the mediation effect.

Abstract:
In this paper, we consider the problem of digital image compression with high requirements to the quality of the result. Obviously, lossless compression algorithms can be applied. Since lossy compression provides a higher compression ratio and, hence, higher memory savings than lossless compression, we propose to use lossy algorithms with settings that provide the smallest loss of quality. The subject matter of this paper is almost lossless compression of full color 24-bit digital images using the discrete atomic compression (DAC) that is an algorithm based on the discrete atomic transform. The goal is to investigate the compression ratio and the quality loss indicators such as uniform (U), root mean square (RMS) and peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR) metrics. We also study the distribution of the difference between pixels of the original image and the corresponding pixels of the reconstructed image. In this research, the classic test images and the classic aerial images are considered. U-metric, which is highly dependent on even minor local changes, is considered as the major metric of quality loss. We solve the following tasks: to evaluate memory savings and loss of quality for each test image. We use the methods of digital image processing, atomic function theory, and approximation theory. The computer program "Discrete Atomic Compression: User Kit" with the mode "Almost Lossless Compression" is used to obtain results of the DAC processing of test images. We obtain the following results: 1) the difference between the smallest and the largest loss of quality is minor; 2) loss of quality is quite stable and predictable; 3) the compression ratio depends on the smoothness of the color change (the smallest and the largest values are obtained when processing the test images with the largest and the smallest number of small details in the image, respectively); 4) DAC provides 59 percent of memory savings; 5) ZIP-compression of DAC-files, which contain images compressed by DAC, is efficient. Conclusions: 1) the almost lossless compression mode of DAC provides sufficiently stable values of the considered quality loss metrics; 2) DAC provides relatively high compression ratio; 3) there is a possibility of further optimization of the DAC algorithm; 4) further research and development of this algorithm are promising.

Abstract:
“Dad bloggers” are an emerging community of fathers in North America. These men use social media to document and discuss their experiences as parents and gather annually at the Dad 2.0 Summit. A central topic of discussion both online and offline is how involved fathers negotiate and rework gender roles and expectations. This study examines how dad bloggers create and engage with discourse about masculinities. Using blog posts, fieldwork observations, and interviews as data, I present qualitative findings illustrating the ways in which dad bloggers challenge traditional notions of masculinity, construct “caring masculinities,” and adopt a pro-feminist perspective. Despite certain tensions and contradictions within the community, I argue that dad bloggers are reconstructing fatherhood and masculinities in ways that promote care and equality overall.

However, the related study of academic dishonesty in mainland China is very limited. This study fills this gap by examining the theory of planned behavior and its three extended versions, validating the effectiveness of predicting DAB among Chinese undergraduates, and testing 11 developed hypotheses. This study uses a quantitative research design, and responses are collected online from 525 undergraduate students from five disciplines in the second to fourth year at a public university in China. The results reveal the proposed models have good fitting indices and support 10 hypothetical relationships. These relationships demonstrate that attitudes, norms and control beliefs significantly impact intentions and justifications. Meanwhile, behavioral control, intentions, and justifications significantly influence DAB. Notably, this study found a direct and significant effect of MO on justifications. Therein, Model four best explains the variance in DAB and provides practical support for the expanded TPB models’ application in China.

Abstract:
A method for simultaneously running a collection of dynamic simulators coupled by algebraic boundary conditions is presented. Dynamic interactions between subsystems are simulated without disclosing proprietary information about the subsystem models, as all the computations are performed based on input-output numerical data of encapsulated subsystem simulators coded by independent groups. First, this paper describes a system of interacting subsystems with a causal conflict as a high-index, Differential-Algebraic Equation (DAE), and develops a systematic solution method using Discrete-Time Sliding Mode control. Stability and convergence conditions as well as error bounds are analyzed by using nonlinear control theory. Second, the algorithm is modified such that the subsystem simulator does not have to disclose its internal model and state variables for solving the overall DAE. The new algorithm is developed based on the generalized Kirchhoff Laws that allow us to represent algebraic boundary constraints as linear equations of the subsystems’ outputs interacting to each other. Third, a multi-rate algorithm is developed for improving efficiency, accuracy, and convergence characteristics. Numerical examples verify the major theoretical results and illustrate features of the proposed method.

Abstract:
Recent attention has focused on deriving localised pulse solutions to various systems of reaction–diffusion equations. In this paper, we consider the evolution of localised pulses in the Brusselator activator–inhibitor model, long considered a paradigm for the study of non-linear equations, in a finite one-dimensional domain with feed of the inhibitor through the boundary and global feed of the activator. We employ the method of matched asymptotic expansions in the limit of small activator diffusivity and small activator and inhibitor feeds. The disparity of diffusion lengths between the activator and inhibitor leads to pulse-type solutions in which the activator is localised while the inhibitor varies on an O(1) length scale. In the asymptotic limit considered, the pulses become spikes described by Dirac delta functions and evolve slowly in time until equilibrium is reached. Such quasi-equilibrium solutions with N activator pulses are constructed and a differential-algebraic system of equations (DAE) is derived, characterising the slow evolution of the locations and the amplitudes of the pulses. We find excellent agreement for the pulse evolution between the asymptotic theory and the results of numerical computations. An algebraic system for the equilibrium pulse amplitudes and locations is derived from the equilibrium points of the DAE system. Both symmetric equilibria, corresponding to a common pulse amplitude, and asymmetric pulse equilibria, for which the pulse amplitudes are different, are constructed. We find that for a positive boundary feed rate, pulse spacing of symmetric equilibria is no longer uniform, and that for sufficiently large boundary flux, pulses at the edges of the pattern may collide with and remain fixed at the boundary. Lastly, stability of the equilibrium solutions is analysed through linearisation of the DAE, which, in contrast to previous approaches, provides a quick way to calculate the small eigenvalues governing weak translation-type instabilities of equilibrium pulse patterns.

Abstract:
This article (Funded by EPSRC and the National Grid Company.) explores some introductory principles of differential-algebraic equations (DAEs) and makes a connection with the theory of dynamical systems. Some results which are new in the field of DAEs are also surveyed. Most treatments on DAE emphasize the differences that exist when compared with the ODE case. Here we seek to underline the similarities so that readers with a very basic knowledge of nonlinear dynamics can understand some of their consequences in this more general context.

Abstract:
SUMMARY It has been an assumption of many practitioners of comparative linguistics that genetic relations are defined between languages as holistic entities. A recent explicit expression of this position is Thomason &Kaufman (1988). An alternative viewpoint, probably a minority position, is that expressed (inter alia) by Allen (1953), which defines genetic relations in terms of linguistic components. Assuming the correctness of the first position, which is the more stringent one, I examine one aspect of linguistic structure in Nigerian Arabic, idiomatic expressions, showing that Nigerian Arabic belongs to what I term a Lake Chad Basin areal type, which is quite distinct from Arabic of the Middle East. On the other hand, the Arabic heritage is unmistakeably dominant in its phonology, morphology, lexicon, and syntax. It follows from this comparative study that either the second, componential conception of linguistic relatedness must be adopted, or language families of the world will need to be radically rethought.
