Abstract:
Diarylethenes with thiophene substituents belong to photoswitchable compounds (photoswitches or photochromes). Upon UV irradiation, their colorless open-ring isomers (DAE-o) convert to the colored closed-ring isomers (DAE-c), while the back reaction is induced only by visible light irradiation. A multiple photoswitching of diarylethenes usually results in irreversible photorearrangement of DAE-c to the so-called annulated isomers DAE-a, that are stable thermally and photochemically. In the present communication, structures of a series of diarylethenes as well as their isomers were optimized on the B3LYP/6-31G(d) level of theory. It was disclosed for the first time, that DAE-a destabilized relatively DAE-c by 1.71–14.00 kcal/mol. These results are important for design of photocontrollable molecules and materials, operated in the oneway (permanent manner).

Abstract:
It has previously been established that in a prestressed incompressible elastic plate, a near-critical instability mode can interact resonantly with two non-critical vibration modes and that the evolution equations for the three modes take the form d2 A1/dτ2 = -c0A1 - c1|A1|2A1 - γ1Ā2Ā3, dA2/dτ = γ2Ā1Ā3 and dA3/dτ = γ3Ā1Ā2, where a bar denotes complex conjugation, τ is a slow time variable and c0, c1, γ1, γ2, γ3 are real constants. In this paper, we analyze these amplitude equations using dynamical systems theory. Regions of the parametric space that correspond to bounded solutions are determined and some explicit representations of the bounded solutions are obtained. It is shown that the resonant-triad interaction can lead to chaotic motions.

Abstract:
In dynamic analysis of constrained multibody systems (MBS), the computer simulation problem essentially reduces to finding a numerical solution to higher-index differential-algebraic equations (DAE). This paper presents a hybrid method composed of multi-input multi-output (MIMO), nonlinear, variable-structure control (VSC) theory and post-stabilization from DAE solution theory for the computer solution of constrained MBS equations. The primary contributions of this paper are: (1) explicit transformation of constrained MBS DAE into a general nonlinear MIMO control problem in canonical form; (2) development of a hybrid numerical method that incorporates benefits of both Sliding Mode Control (SMC) and DAE stabilization methods for the solution of index-2 or index-3 MBS DAE; (3) development of an acceleration-level stabilization method that draws from SMC’s boundary layer dynamics and the DAE literature’s post-stabilization; and (4) presentation of the hybrid numerical method as one way to eliminate chattering commonly found in simulation of SMC systems. The hybrid method presented can be used to simulate constrained MBS systems with either holonomic, nonholonomic, or both types of constraints. In addition, the initial conditions (ICs) may either be consistent or inconsistent. In this paper, MIMO SMC is used to find the control law that will provide two guarantees. First, if the constraints are initially not satisfied (i.e., for inconsistent ICs) the constraints will be driven to satisfaction within finite time using SMC’s stabilization method, urobust,i=−ηisgnsi. Second, once the constraints have been satisfied, the control law, ueq and hybrid stabilization techniques guarantee surface attractiveness and satisfaction for all time. For inconsistent ICs, Hermite-Birkhoff interpolants accurately locate when each surface reaches zero, indicating the transition time from SMC’s stabilization method to those in the DAE literature. Abstract:
This study compared and analyzed the records of Dae Cha and Noewon Cha in Korean and Chinese historical records. This analysis showed that these two types of tea should be approached from an East Asian perspective, breaking the notion that had been recognized as unique domestic teas of Goryeo. In addition, Dae Cha and Noewon Cha are good research topics for understanding the negotiations of East Asian tea culture in the 10th century. An analysis of the records of the two countries suggested that Dae Cha was produced and used for 139 years from 909 to 1047 in the Wuyue, Min, and Goryeo dynasties. Noewon Cha may have existed throughout the Silla, Wuyue, and Goryeo Dynasties for 132 years, from 916 to 1047. Through this study, Dae Cha was produced in Muzhou, Zhejiang Province. Hence, the possibility that Noewon Cha could be Shilla's tea could be explored. In this paper, the Shilla theory, the Wuyue theory, and the Goryeo theory were raised in relation to the origin of Noewon Cha. In this study, some issues that need to be identified through future research have emerged. These include the problem with the name of Noewon Cha, which is marked differently in the records of the two countries, the problem of the production area of Noewon Cha, and the tea culture negotiation relationship between the countries that existed in the Korean Peninsula and the Chinese mainland in the 10th century. This study is expected to enrich the discourse of Dae Cha and Noewon Cha and give new vitality to research in this field.

Abstract:
Diarylethene is a prototypical molecular switch that can be reversibly photoisomerized between its open and closed forms. Ligands bpy-DAE-bpy, consisting of a phenyl-diarylethene-phenyl (DAE) central core and bipyridine (bpy) terminal substituents, are able to self-organize. They are investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy at the solid–liquid interface. Upon light irradiation, cooperative photochromic switching of the ligands is recognized down to the submolecular level. The closed isomers show different electron density of states (DOS) contrasts, attributed to the HOMO or LUMO molecular orbitals observed. More importantly, the LUMO images show remarkable differences between the open and closed isomers, attributed to combined topographic and electronic contrasts mainly on the DAE moieties. The electronic contrasts from multiple HOMO or LUMO distributions, combined with topographic distortion of the open or closed DAE, are interpreted by density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

Abstract:
The subject matter of this paper is the discrete atomic compression (DAC) of digital images, which is a lossy compression process based on the discrete atomic transform (DAT). The goal is to investigate the efficiency of the DAC algorithm. We solve the following tasks: to develop a general compression scheme using discrete atomic transform and to compare the results of DAC and JPEG algorithms. In this article, we use the methods of digital image processing, atomic function theory, and approximation theory. To compare the efficiency of DAC with the JPEG compression algorithm we use the sets of the classic test images and the classic aerial images. We analyze compression ratio (CR) and loss of quality, using uniform (U), root mean square (RMS) and peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR) metrics. DAC is an algorithm with flexible parameters. In this paper, we use “Optimal” and “Allowable” modes of this algorithm and compare them with the corresponding modes of JPEG. We obtain the following results: 1) DAC is much better than JPEG by the U-criterion of quality loss; 2) there are no significant differences between DAC and JPEG by RMS and PSNR criterions; 3) the compression ratio of DAC is much higher than the compression ratio of JPEG. In other words, the DAC algorithm saves more memory than the JPEG compression algorithm with not worse quality results. These results are due to the fundamental properties of atomic functions such as good approximation properties, the high order of smoothness and existence of locally supported basis in the spaces of atomic functions. Since generalized Fup-functions have the same convenient properties, it is clear that such compression results can be achieved by application of a generalized discrete atomic transform, which is based on these functions. We also discuss the obtained results in the terms of approximation theory and function theory. Conclusions: 1) it is possible to achieve better results with DAC than with JPEG; 2) application of DAC to image compression is more preferable than JPEG in the case when it is planned to use recognition algorithms; 3) further development and investigation of the DAC algorithm are promising

Abstract:
In both field theories of high energy physics and field theories of condensed matter theories anomalies have been imposing constraints and bringing up new theories. While the perturbational and local anomalies from triangle diagrams are well-developed, we follow and review two works leading to non-perturbational global anomalies both related with Atiyah-Patogi-Sieger (APS) index theorem. In the context of topological fieldtheories the APS index theorem imposes an η-invariant which adds a global anomalous e−iπη/2 to the path integral from each fermions on the boundary. In the case of Pin+ (4) this will require a multiple of 16 Majorana fermions for the global anomaly to cancel. On the other hand with Dai-Freed theorem, global ’t Hooft anomalies concerned to G symmetry group on 4-dimensional spin manifold which is also classifying space BG are studied. The existence of anomalies are related to the triviality of spin bordismgroup Ω Spin5(BG), where examples with SU(2), GSM and Zn are studied with Atiyah-Hirzebruch spectral sequence method and representation of Z n rings. Further there are extensions of spin groups from Pin, SpinZ4 and Spinc , where the anomaly cancellationconstraint of 16 fermions per generation from Spin Z 4 (4) is related to that of Pin + (4) in topological superconductor. A possible candidate of Z4 charge named B − L charge or X charge from several commutative breaking patterns of Spin(10) GUT is briefly discussed with Pati-Salam model and R ⊗ C ⊗ H ⊗ O.

Piccolomini, d'Aragona Antonio. "Dag Prawitz's theory of grounds." Thesis, Aix-Marseille, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019AIXM0590.

Full text
Abstract:
In his recent theory of grounds, Prawitz develops his semantic investigations towards an analysis of the epistemic power which valid inferences are endowed with to compel one to accept the conclusion, provided one is justified in holding the premises true. A ground is what one is in possession of when one is justified in asserting a sentence. Grounds are built by performing operations that allow to pass from an evidence state to another evidence state. An inferential act consists of an application of an operation on grounds. The theory of grounds allows for undoubted advancements with respect to Prawitz's previous proof-theoretic semantics. In particular, it provides a definition of the notion of valid inference which makes the epistemic power of proofs depend on the epistemic power of the valid inferences of which proofs are built up. But the two semantics also share a problem; in both of them, valid inferences and proofs might be such that it is impossible, for agents who perform them, to recognize that they justify their conclusions. We develop the formal framework of Prawitz's proposal, by introducing a "universe" of grounds and operations on grounds, as well as some formal languages and systems of grounds. Then, we focus on two issues: the completeness of intuitionistic logic, and the aforementioned recognizability problem

Isaacson, Summer. "“We the various races” : Developing Role theory: The Bakun dam case." Thesis, Uppsala universitet, Statsvetenskapliga institutionen, 2019. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-402321.

Abstract:
This descriptive essay aims to develop constructivist Role theory. Specifically, it examines the potential of applying role analysis to a case of two types of actors; marginalized citizens and their state decision makers. There has previously been little role analysis applied to domestic political settings, as opposed to internationally between states. Therefore, research has been encouraged in this area. The selected empirical case is the controversial Bakun hydroelectric dam project in Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo. It involves the resettlement of the marginalized indigenous Orang Ulu people and is driven by the Sarawak state government. By analyzing the role conceptions and norms of these actors, together with the concept of power, a new perspective on their relationship is developed. The successful application of Role theory in this new setting and case is a contributing point of the study. The role analysis is conducted using a qualitative critical text analysis method; an analytical framework is established with which the actors’ roles are retrieved from the text material. The results are then analyzed, and the conclusion of the case study is that the actors have incoherent conceptions of their roles and norms, leading to a conflict between the two in which the government has the upper hand due to (illegitimate) power structures.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation uses a case study of the recently proposed dam on the Mary River at Traveston Crossing in South-East Queensland to consider how individuals can become empowered to effect change in the environmental decision-making processes of the state through citizen action in the public sphere. The theoretical framework chosen to guide the analysis is an adaptation of Judith Butler’s theory of performativity (1997) that I refer to as political performativity. I also draw on social movement theory and media theory to examine how the processes of performativity help explain the practices involved in the public sphere actions taken to stop the Queensland Government’s proposed dam. The case study demonstrates that the initial speech acts of the state government’s announcement, and the way in which these were carried out, impacted on the life worlds of people involved. The protesters’ actions were not only symbolic of their struggle but also part of the creation of an alternative life world vastly different to that imposed upon them through the various speech acts of the Queensland Government. Lessons for the future include the development of more conscious strategies for activists in public sphere actions. Potential research resulting from this study includes a closer examination of the relationship between speech acts, emotions and public sphere action. The usefulness of political performativity in understanding emotions, public sphere action and power may better be served through participatory research methodologies. Further research directions are outlined.

Abstract:
Adult day care centres provide a means whereby frail or disabled older people can remain living at home particularly when their family care-givers engage in waged work. In Taiwan, adult day care services appear to meet the cultural needs of both older people and their families for whom filial care is vital. Little research attention has been paid to the use of day care services in Taiwan, the uptake rate of which is low. This grounded theory study explored the ways in which older people and family care-givers construct meanings around the use of day care services in Taiwan. Forty-four semi-structured interviews were undertaken with older people, care-givers and day care centre managers. The findings from grounded theory data analysis bring focus to the assumptions and structures that underpin the process of transition to day care services. A key feature of this process is the reconstruction of personal identity as both the older people and family care-givers work to make sense of the relationship between the self and a changing social structure. Reconstructing identity in a shifting world is the core category of the study and reflects a process of reframing whereby older people came to new definitions of social responsibility and independence within the context of the day care centre. Similarly, the family care-givers actively reformulated the concept of filial piety as they interacted with and interpreted the changes in economic and social conditions in Taiwan.

Abstract:

Question:

"Does the market possess perfect information as the efficient market hypothesis says?"

"Is there any significant relationship between the abnormal stock return on the ex – day and the dividend?" Purpose: The purpose of this study is to enlighten and find understanding about stock return versus dividend on the ex – day and try to figure out if abnormal returns occur on the portfolio during dividends.

Methodology:

The study was based in a quantitative nature and was derived with an event study and a hypothesis testing. The authors investigated the thirty most traded shares on the Stockholm stock exchange during a period of five years (2005 – 2009). They were analyzed during a total of nine days; the estimation window was set to sixty days. Theory: Leading theories in this field of study have been picked to enlighten and analysis the questions of the study. Theories used: Efficient market hypothesis, agent theory and the events of dividends.

Empiricism / Results:

The authors made an event study and hypothesis tested the information. From the data they could see a small abnormal return on every day except the day after the ex – day. However, they could not prove a significant relationship between the stocks return and the dividend.

Conclusion / Discussion:

The efficient market hypothesis was strengthened in the conclusion where all new information is reflected in the stock price because the null hypothesis was accepted in all nine cases. The authors also concluded that although they have a differentiated result compared to other studies, it could be a result of the recession. Another conclusion was that the relationship between shareholders and the management has been improved because of a better spread of information.

Abstract:
ZusammenfassungAufstellungen erzeugen unendlich viele Informationen.

Abstract:
Abstract Based on an analysis of the product development process and the study of relevant product development models, the paper presents a new approach aiming at modeling and supporting the design activity as the substantial activity within the product development process. The Autogenetic Design Theory is an approach advancing general design theories. It facilitates the integration of intuition, creativity and artificial intelligence into the conventional design process. To this end, a phase-like allocation of the design process is assumed as the essential structure and an evolutionary algorithm is integrated as the core facilitating purposeful searching and combining. Hence, the flow of the design process can be influenced as all requirements can be included and, on the other hand, intuition and creativity are ensured through the evolutionary algorithm.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper describes the development and testing of a novel approach to evaluating development interventions – the POInT approach. The authors used Bayesian causal modelling to integrate process and outcome data to generate insights about all aspects of the theory of change, including outcomes, mechanisms, mediators and moderators. They partnered with two teams who had evaluated or were evaluating complex development interventions: The UPAVAN team had evaluated a nutrition-sensitive agriculture intervention in Odisha, India, and the DIG team was in the process of evaluating a disability-inclusive poverty graduation intervention in Uganda. The partner teams’ theory of change were adapted into a formal causal model, depicted as a directed acyclic graph (DAG). The DAG was specified in the statistical software R, using the CausalQueries package, having extended the package to handle large models. Using a novel prior elicitation strategy to elicit beliefs over many more parameters than has previously been possible, the partner teams’ beliefs about the nature and strength of causal links in the causal model (priors) were elicited and combined into a single set of shared prior beliefs. The model was updated on data alone as well as on data plus priors to generate posterior models under different assumptions. Finally, the prior and posterior models were queried to learn about estimates of interest, and the relative role of prior beliefs and data in the combined analysis.

Abstract:

Bobashev, Georgiy, John Holloway, Eric Solano, and Boris Gutkin. A Control Theory Model of Smoking. RTI Press, June 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.3768/rtipress.2017.op.0040.1706.

Full text
Abstract:
We present a heuristic control theory model that describes smoking under restricted and unrestricted access to cigarettes. The model is based on the allostasis theory and uses a formal representation of a multiscale opponent process. The model simulates smoking behavior of an individual and produces both short-term (“loading up” after not smoking for a while) and long-term smoking patterns (e.g., gradual transition from a few cigarettes to one pack a day). By introducing a formal representation of withdrawal- and craving-like processes, the model produces gradual increases over time in withdrawal- and craving-like signals associated with abstinence and shows that after 3 months of abstinence, craving disappears. The model was programmed as a computer application allowing users to select simulation scenarios. The application links images of brain regions that are activated during the binge/intoxication, withdrawal, or craving with corresponding simulated states. The model was calibrated to represent smoking patterns described in peer-reviewed literature; however, it is generic enough to be adapted to other drugs, including cocaine and opioids. Although the model does not mechanistically describe specific neurobiological processes, it can be useful in prevention and treatment practices as an illustration of drug-using behaviors and expected dynamics of withdrawal and craving during abstinence.

Muhoza, Cassilde, Wikman Anna, and Rocio Diaz-Chavez. Mainstreaming gender in urban public transport: lessons from Nairobi, Kampala and Dar es Salaam. Stockholm Environment Institute, May 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.51414/sei2021.006.

Full text
Abstract:
The urban population of Africa, the fastest urbanizing continent, has increased from 19% to 39% in the past 50 years, and the number of urban dwellers is projected to reach 770 million by 2030. However, while rapid urbanization has increased mobility and created a subsequent growth in demand for public transport in cities, this has not been met by the provision of adequate and sustainable infrastructure and services. The majority of low-income residents and the urban poor still lack access to adequate transport services and rely on non-motorized and public transport, which is often informal and characterized by poor service delivery. Lack of access to transport services limits access to opportunities that aren’t in the proximity of residential areas, such as education, healthcare, and employment. The urban public transport sector not only faces the challenge of poor service provision, but also of gender inequality. Research shows that, in the existing urban transport systems, there are significant differences in the travel patterns of and modes of transport used by women and men, and that these differences are associated with their roles and responsibilities in society. Moreover, the differences in travel patterns are characterized by unequal access to transport facilities and services. Women are generally underrepresented in the sector, in both its operation and decision-making. Women’s mobility needs and patterns are rarely integrated into transport infrastructure design and services and female users are often victims of harassment and assault. As cities rapidly expand, meeting the transport needs of their growing populations while paying attention to gender-differentiated mobility patterns is a prerequisite to achieving sustainability, livability and inclusivity. Gender mainstreaming in urban public transport is therefore a critical issue, but one which is under-researched in East Africa. This research explores gender issues in public transport in East Africa, focusing in particular on women’s inclusion in both public transport systems and transport policy decision-making processes and using case studies from three cities: Nairobi, Kampala and Dar es Salaam.

Brown, Yolanda, Twonia Goyer, and Maragaret Harvey. Heart Failure 30-Day Readmission Frequency, Rates, and HF Classification. University of Tennessee Health Science Center, December 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.21007/con.dnp.2020.0002.

Full text
Abstract:
30 Day Hospital Readmission Rates, Frequencies, and Heart Failure Classification for Patients with Heart Failure Background Congestive heart failure (CHF) is the leading cause of mortality, morbidity, and disability worldwide among patients. Both the incidence and the prevalence of heart failure are age dependent and are relatively common in individuals 40 years of age and older. CHF is one of the leading causes of inpatient hospitalization readmission in the United States, with readmission rates remaining above the 20% goal within 30 days. The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services imposes a 3% reimbursement penalty for excessive readmissions including those who are readmitted within 30 days from prior hospitalization for heart failure. Hospitals risk losing millions of dollars due to poor performance. A reduction in CHF readmission rates not only improves healthcare system expenditures, but also patients’ mortality, morbidity, and quality of life. Purpose The purpose of this DNP project is to determine the 30-day hospital readmission rates, frequencies, and heart failure classification for patients with heart failure. Specific aims include comparing computed annual re-admission rates with national average, determine the number of multiple 30-day re-admissions, provide descriptive data for demographic variables, and correlate age and heart failure classification with the number of multiple re-admissions. Methods A retrospective chart review was used to collect hospital admission and study data. The setting occurred in an urban hospital in Memphis, TN. The study was reviewed by the UTHSC Internal Review Board and deemed exempt. The electronic medical records were queried from July 1, 2019 through December 31, 2019 for heart failure ICD-10 codes beginning with the prefix 150 and a report was generated. Data was cleaned such that each patient admitted had only one heart failure ICD-10 code. The total number of heart failure admissions was computed and compared to national average. Using age ranges 40-80, the number of patients re-admitted withing 30 days was computed and descriptive and inferential statistics were computed using Microsoft Excel and R. Results A total of 3524 patients were admitted for heart failure within the six-month time frame. Of those, 297 were re-admitted within 30 days for heart failure exacerbation (8.39%). An annual estimate was computed (16.86%), well below the national average (21%). Of those re-admitted within 30 days, 50 were re-admitted on multiple occasions sequentially, ranging from 2-8 re-admissions. The median age was 60 and 60% male. Due to the skewed distribution (most re-admitted twice), nonparametric statistics were used for correlation. While graphic display of charts suggested a trend for most multiple re-admissions due to diastolic dysfunction and least number due to systolic heart failure, there was no statistically significant correlation between age and number or multiple re-admissions (Spearman rank, p = 0.6208) or number of multiple re-admissions and heart failure classification (Kruskal Wallis, p =0.2553).
